An early line on the SEC in 2011, and UGA is … well, not No. 1

With the SEC having generated the BCS titlist five years running, the moral of our story — if indeed morals apply in this cutthroat conference — is this: Win the league, win it all. But that mightn’t be the case come Jan. 9, 2102. (Though the championship game will be played in New Orleans, smack in the heart of SEC country.)

Oklahoma figures to start next season ranked No. 1, and that would be a departure. The past three preseason No. 1’s have hailed from guess where: Georgia in 2008, Florida in 2009, Alabama in 2010. (As we know, none finished No. 1.) Eyeballing it from this distance, the SEC would appear slightly lessened in 2011, but is the Tiffany League ever truly down?

Herewith we offer a look-ahead, the 12 programs ranked in ascending order:

12. Vanderbilt: The Commodores have a new coach. So they’ve got that going for them.

11. Kentucky: The Wildcats seemed onto something when they played Auburn close and beat South Carolina, but they lost four of their final six games. They’ll have a new quarterback in 2011, and Morgan Newton — who started the BBVA Compass Bowl because senior Mike Hartline was suspended — appears a cut below his predecessor.

10. Ole Miss: Wasn’t it only yesterday — actually, it was 2009 — that this team was hailed as a national contender? Nothing has gone right since. Gambling on quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, the defrocked Oregon Duck, enabled the Rebels to win only one SEC game, that against Kentucky. Houston Nutt’s nutty program again appears the least of the SEC West.

9. Tennessee: The Vols have found a quarterback in Tyler Bray, and his emergence enabled them to become bowl-eligible. Now the bad news: Tennessee finished 6-7 and didn’t beat anyone of consequence. Heck, it lost big to …

8. Georgia: Going on returning talent, this ranking is too low. Going on the tenuous state of the program, this ranking might be too high. Some Bulldog fans see Isaiah Crowell, the recruit from Columbus who has yet to commit, as The Next Herschel Walker. I ask: Have we learned nothing in 30 years? There was but one Herschel Walker.

7. Florida: Will Muschamp, the new head coach, is also a rookie head coach. Hiring Charlie Weis as his offensive coordinator will help, but Weis hasn’t seemed half as clever since being separated from Tom Brady. John Brantley, the quarterback of whom much was expected in 2010, is considering transferring — and even Gator backers don’t know if that would be good or bad.

Zach Mettenberger: He's a Bayou Bengal now. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Zach Mettenberger, new to LSU. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

6. Auburn: The national champs will surely lose quarterback Cam Newton and defensive destroyer Nick Fairley to the NFL, and they weren’t just the two best players on their team — they were the two best players in the country. And that’s how it works in the better half of this conference: You can go from No. 1 in the land to No. 5 in the SEC West in the wink of an eye.

5. Mississippi State: The temptation is to put the Bulldogs a notch higher, but two factors mitigate: State lost defensive Manny Diaz to Texas, and the sneak-up factor from 2010 will be gone. Still, if the Bulldogs can win at Auburn on Sept. 10, they’ll face LSU in Starkville on a Thursday night in a cowbell-clamorous game that could propel them into the Top 10.

4. Arkansas: The Razorbacks will take a slight step backward — they reached the Sugar Bowl in Year 3 under Bobby Petrino — only because they’re losing quarterback Ryan Mallett to the NFL draft. But Tyler Wilson seems an able replacement, and Petrino can coach quarterbacks. The downside: Hogs must face Alabama and LSU on the road.

3. South Carolina: The Gamecocks achieved their forever-awaited breakthrough by winning the SEC East. They then lost twice in the Georgia Dome by an aggregate 48 points. The key offensive players return, and Carolina hopes Jadeveon Clowney, the in-state product considered the nation’s No. 1 recruit, will take his talents to Columbia and do for the defense as tailback Marcus Lattimore did for the offense.

2. Alabama: Talent-wise, this is the SEC’s deepest program. But losing three key offensive players — quarterback Greg McElroy, tailback Mark Ingram and wideout Julio Jones — has to have some effect. Doesn’t it?

1. LSU: The SEC West will hinge the Tigers’ Nov. 5 game against Alabama, which will be staged in Tuscaloosa. But LSU, which has struggled for three seasons to find a quarterback, might have two: Jordan Jefferson has begun to settle, and Zach Mettenberger, dismissed from Georgia’s program after his arrest, might wind up starting. And there’s  precedent for an SEC champion being quarterbacked by a Georgia native who began at one league program but flourished at another: Cam Newton of Atlanta did it in 2010; might it Mettenberger of Watkinsville in 2011?

MB, you are such a UGA hater and are the worst journalist ever. Wait a minute, you are a columnist so you can put opinions out that area meant to stir up the masses. Why don’t you try writing a column asking why other SEC programs like LSU and Auburn see nothing wrong with recruiting JUCO quarterbacks that were kicked off other teams for serious offenses. The reason you will not is because you are a hypocrite. You skewer CMR for the offenses happening in the first place but it is ten times more awlful to recruit a player knowing he was bad enough to get kicked off the prior team. You will not answer my question because you only answer questions from someone giving you praise or agreeing with you. That makes you a hypocrite and a coward.

“Going on returning talent, this ranking is too low.”

Other than Murray, what returning talent do you mean? The other top 6 players on this year’s team will be gone next year.

With 18 returning starters, 2010 was the Bulldogs’ year. Somehow, because we had a redshirt freshman (aka sophomore) QB this year, everybody said our team was “young”.

I think UGA is ranked too high myself. They had returning talent this past season and the past several seasons and look where they ended up. Also, I have heard that line of crap for so long about the next coming of Herschel Walker until I’m sick of hearing it. I guess thats what Auburn will be looking for the next 30 years, the next coming of Cam Newton. UGA has major problems and its not returning talent as far as players but the returning non-talent in other areas but I guess thats beating a dead horse.

I wish you would not have picked LSU as the best Mark, Kind of like the SI curse. That said the Tigers have a tough schedule. They open with Oregon in Dallas and play West Va on the road later in September. Then we have the SEC schedule which includes Alabama, Florida, Auburn, Ms State and Arkansas. Our hands will be full and we can’t afford any slip ups.

As the sharp bloggers on here know, there is a fine line in many instances between winning and losing in the SEC and chips have to fall your way.

There will be some surprises in the SEC in 2011 as there always is.

Need you be reminded that Chizik is a hack coach and Ted Roof has spent his career as a middling defensive coordinator. Malzahn is the brains behind the operation, but without Newton, that was a 7-5 team this year, and they are losing all the starters on offensive line, DL, most of the secondary and linebackers and their best WR could declare early.

I like Tennessee to step it way up, probably second in the East. They have some promising OL and the Bray kid has a rocket. All the skill folks are back, and the felon at safety will be the best defensive player in the SEC next year, Janzen Jackson.

UGA is probably about a 6-6 team again. Should kick both the lazy RB’s off the team, but Richt is scared he will not have anybody left to run the ball. Offensive line is lazy. The entire program is just lazy, no work ethic, no dedication. Doubt that changes.

Mark Bradley, you are such a negative individual against the SEC. Who saw Auburn turning out to be the NC this year? They started off ranked in the 20’s. I am a state of Georgia fan, with an ever increasing lean to UGA.
I am not an Auburn fan, but, they came out of nowhere. It is un-common for the SEC to be down as much as it was this year, yet, the SEC claims its 5th NC in a row. Do I think it will continue? I have no idea. We do not know how FL, AL,or LSU is going to turn out to be next year. Whoever has the best defense in the SEC is going to be the one to watch for. Offenses come from everywhere and in all kinds of forms, but when a good SEC offense gets a hold of someone, the offense knows the SEC has gotten a hold of them. Just ask Oregon.
For some odd reason, I think LSU has the potential to be pretty good next year. All anyone did was gripe all year long about how bad they were, yet they had a pretty good year and then beat an equally ranked team 41-24. This kid from GA, going to LSU is going to be highly motivated to clean up his screw-up, and a good offensive year will do that.
Is UGA going to be in contention for the NC? It would have to be an act of God for that to happen, which is not out of the question, but not likely.
Also, if I am not mistaken, your last article of the year of 2010 was an apology for all of your predictions being so wrong for the entire year. How in the world someone can be so wrong so often and excel at what they do, I have no idea. Yet here we are, having this discussion about your opinions that are so wrong so often.

I will say it over and over CMR punted 4 games gave them up waiting for AJ. He appeared to have no clue what to do or how to change the game plan and did not seem to want to. So why are we expected to not give up on him? I feel for the upcoming team even if you have talent your home may be the sidelines.

1- How many classes did Fairley and Newton take last wemester and hours earned?

2- Are one and dones the future of college football

Appears to me after the recent success of Jr College transfers, the five stars should go JUCO and wait until their third year and go where they are needed most for National Championship run then of to NFL, Newton and Fairley make a mockery of “student athlete”

The first two games will be huge for the newly studied and refreshed HC at Georgia. If they do things different and surprise those folks in the first two games, they could win them and make something happen Things Different. 1. Block, give the RB’s a chance 2. Throw away dated offensive game plan that our wife’s can call before they happen.3. Put in 15 plays from the spread formation and let this kid from Wilcox county be involved in them all. 4. Plug the damn middle of that defense.6. A little luck.

I don’t see UGA winning the SEC in 2102 Mark. What does our schedule look like that year? As we are all aware the world will end on Dec. 21, 2012, so we will have to forfeit those 2102 games.

Personally, I think UGA’s going to be fine-Even if Ealey and King take backseat to Crowell (considering he commits to the Dawgs) and Ken Malcome (a very physical runner between the tackles-redshirt frosh next year too), the running game will be fine. As well, not having AJ Green on the team now will actually help the Dawgs I believe because now Bobo and Richt will have to find ways to utilize ALL their weapons rather than just #8 (look at the facts: UGA last year, 1-4 without AJ, 5-2 with him..that tells me Richt and Bobo relied to heavily on him to produce rater than ALL the great recruits they’ve had over the past couple years). Receivers will be fine without AJ there also. Wooten, King and Brown have all shown flashes of what we thought they were coming out of high school but have been overshadowed and underused because of #8. Orson Charles should be utilized more as not only a 3rd down and medium receiver but also the “hybrid” slot receiver Richt and Bobo have tried to use him as. AND, if we get Jay Rome as another tight end who can play from the start, we’ll be set at that position. The O-line will be fine (most all are returning except two). Murray will also be even better next season now that he knows what he’s up against in the SEC (AND I believe we’ll beat Florida..you know that’s the one game Murray is looking forward to the most and we have an off week before the UF game next year).

The defense will get better in it’s second year in the 3-4. The players know the system now better and know what’s expected of them. Our secondary will consist of Branden Smith (gets better every year at corner), Alec Ogletree (came on strong in his freshman year), Damian Swann (highly recruited CB who wants to help turn the UGA program around)/Brandon Boykin (if he decides to come back)..the only question is the other safety (Commings is gone).

The linebackers will be bolstered by Jones and Samuel playing and if Justin Houston returns (which I think he should/will-his stock can only go up more from here) we will be dominate against the run. The D Line desperately needs a Nose Tackle but we’re still in the running for the big JUCO target Jenkins and if we get him, we will be set..I predict Dawgs will go a surprising 10-2 with losses occurring either against South Carolina (a home game for the Dawgs), Boise State (basically a home game), or Auburn (another home game-and one you KNOW the Dawgs want to win after what happened this past year). The Dawgs schedule is actually very favorable to make a surprising run when you look at all components. They don’t play Bama or LSU either and all their big game are at home or neutral (UF, Boise basically a home game).

And I agree with LSU being first. IF an SEC team goes to the NC next year, it will be Bama or LSU (LSU really loses no one this season except Patrick Peterson). SEC Championship will be Bama/LSU vs. South Carolina/UGA I predict. UF and AU will both be down (UF for a new coach, AU because if they lose Cam and Fairley they will be anemic on both sides of the ball).

Mark,

Look at the SEC Schedule grid and you will see that LSU is going to have road games that will provide some very possible loss opportunites throughout the 2011 season, they have Oregon, Miss. St, Alabama, Tennessee, and Ole Miss on the road and Arkansas and Florida at home
. Alabama has 2 road games that will pose problems at Florida, and Miss. St.
South Carolina has UGA, Miss.St, UT, and Arkansas on the road for possible losses.
Arkansas is at Alabama early on the road, Ole Miss in the middle and at LSU late, by far the easiest road SEC schedule.
Miss. St has Auburn early, UGA in the middle, Kentucky and Arkansas late on the road, and Alabama at home.
Florida has Kentucky, Alabama, LSU, Auburn in 4 weeks with 3 of those on the road.
Auburn has Miss. St at home real early, on the road at Clemson, at South Carolina, at Arkansas, Florida at home, LSU on the road, at Georgia, and Alabama at home, they lose too many players and their playmaker Newton.
Georgia has Boise St, which will set the tone early, win means big year confidence wise, close loss means they still believe, a bad loss and the ship sailed in Memphis, they get USC at home another pivotal game, at Ole Miss and Houston Nutt is desperate to win to save his job too, a fast rising Miss. St team at home, at Tennessee and the home of a DOOLEY, at Vandy never a real easy game for UGA on the road with big games coming up, Florida in Jacksonville( need we say more?) Auburn at home(payback?) and Kentucky at home, then Tech in Atlanta.
Tennesseee has no one early, (Cincy) the on the road to Florida, then UGA, LSU, Alabama, South Carolilna with the only road game in Tuscaloosa, then later at Arkansas and at Kentucky.

These road games are killers in the middle of the season, and with that being said, you can flip flop or keep LSU and Alabama at 1 and 2, Miss. St is the riser, Arkansas can jump up past USC, Florida will fall in line behind USC, Georgia can either be a much improved team and be the surprise of 2011 or fall flat and never get up, Tenneseee has too many tough tough games but a good deal at home and they can come in either behind UGA or in front of the Dawgs, then the rest of the pack is Auburn who will need to find a new identity, Ole Miss, Kentucky, and Vandy…

Depth is everything in this league and replacing a good player with a good player will keep you in the game and race, lose a great player and most of the time the wheels fall off.

Georgia has 6 “baked in” wins next year (Coastal Carolina, Vandy , Kentucky , New Mexico State and Ole Miss),so we really can’t judge next year on those pretty sure wins. The other 6 games will tell the tale on CMR. That said, its critical to remember that the TIMING of those games is important. If the Doggies start off 1-2 ( A distinct possibility), the sharks will begin circling and “sources close to the program” will start speculating about Richt’s future, thus changing the whole dynamic of the season. If it looks like Richt will walk the plank, will the seniors pack it in,thus making the freefall worse ? Will recruits start to publicly ask about Richt’s removal ? If bthe Pups are eliminated from the east race early (after the Tennessee game for instance),would the administration make a move to reassure recruits and players in the program that there will be changes ? Again, the dynamic changes based on the first 3-4 weeks of the season. Boise will be HUGE.

Auburn will win 9 games AT MOST in ‘11.

LSU is overrated.

One of two things will happen with the Will Muschamp/Charlie Weis experiment at Florida: It will be a huge success or a huge embarassing failure. There will be no in between.

Georgia will go 6-6 again and Mark Richt will be fired the day after he beats Tech…again.

Alabama will win the SEC but with 2 losses won’t make the BCS title game.

South Carolina will be exposed as the one hit wonder poser that anyone with a brain knows it is.

I see only 7 at most and that may be generous…their road schedule, player losses, playmakers lost, and now with the target placed squarely on their backs it is just harder to win after an SEC title or National Title.

Listen Gene will purchase another QB and be right back in the mix.

Here’s my long range projection ( I said Tuberville would be fired in 3 after going 13-0, he was fired in 4). Gene Sham Chizik will not start the 2015 season at Auburn. Even Auburn fans know that if not for Scam and the bad call in the NC game this team would not be national champs. Remember OR scored 8 to Auburn’s 6 in the second half and Sham fumbled on the previous drive.

A booth review not overturned in the LSU game, the Arkansas game.

A late drive to beat a USC team that collapsed in Auburn

A meltdown by Alabama.

Shankit: Auburn’s been playing football for a lot longer than the past five years. 2007 and 2008 were down years, like any program has ( See Georgia Bulldogs 2009 and 2010 ). Auburn has two SEC championships and a National Championship since 2004. What do the “Dawgs” have to show for in that time span? That’s right: Nothing. So let’s get off of this business of Dawgies trying to make themselves feel better by claiming Auburn has always been mediocre. Historically that is simply not the case and quite ironic since the Dawgs are mediocre themselves these days. Btw, when was the last time a Georgia Bulldog team was undefeated? I know the answer. 2011 will be Richt’s last year as Head Coach at UGA. At best he will go 7-5 and could easily go 6-6. The 6 possible defeats could be: 1) Boise S. 2) Carolina 3) Ole Miss—play at Oxford. Ga has lost numerous times there with the better team. The Right Reverend Houston Nutt will be on the hot seat and trying his best to win as many as he can, and UGA will be winnable. 4) MS. State— has better coaching and greater desire to win. 5) Tennessee— Dooley has things on a pretty good foundation and the level of play will be much better for UT then last year. 6) They will lose 1 more from one of the following by simply having a lousy game…fumbles, penalties, interceptions: Vanderbilt, Auburn, KY, GA.Institute of Technology. Richt will be fired at year’s end if he does not choose to resign. My prediction for 2011. Could be wrong. Been wrong before.

my humble take is that UGA and UT will be vastloy improved next season. USCe will not sneak up on anyone next season. In fact, teams will probably try to pound Lattimore (who is an exceptional player) because Garcia has shown that he tends to implode if Lattimore is a tad off. The Gators are an unknown which makes them a potential dark horse. The talent is still in Gainesville, and we now have a coaching staff who will be enegized. It should be interesting.
In the West, I see either BAMA or LSU winning that division – and the West winner being the eventual SEC Champ.
Looks like we are getting ready early this year which makes all of our predictions fun. Heck, I have never been right in my predictions except for 2008.

I want to elaborate on a comment someone made earlier about the SEC programs.

The elite teams in the conference are loaded with talent, loaded with athletes and big strong players who at any moment could play as well as the guy in front of them. There are positions like quarterback where that rule does not apply as often, but for the guys who do not touch the ball like your linemen( both sides of the ball) linebackers, etc that is pretty much the rule.

If you any of you guys attended a College football game this past year and saw an LSU, an Alabama, even a Florida team you saw so many players running on and off the field each play or each series that were just as big and just as fast and just as strong as the guy he replace. That is what good programs that recruit not only for the best players but the need of the program do.

At UGA we see all of the STARS and think oh we have to get him, no you do not, want and need are two different things. How many stars did Mark Ingram have out of high school? He was a 3 star player by one service and the other service gave him a fourth star after his high school playoffs. How many stars did Caleb King have, 4 or 5 and what has he done. My point is that if you are going to run a spread offense recruit players to run it, if you are going to run a pro style offense recruit the players to run it, but you recruit for STARS you are going to find yourself in the same situation over and over as we are now currently in at Georgia.

Big Backs, Blocking Tight Ends, Big DT’s with long arms, True Corners not running backs turned into corners, Linebackers who are linebackers, not some former big runnning back or tight end you moved over to defense because of lack of depth.

You know what lack of DEPTH is? The inefficient levels of recruiting. Coaches know during the season if they have a stud sophomore linebacker or wideout , or any player that the chances of leaving early for the NFL are greater and that is an area for recruiting, but no not at Georgia, we go out and recruit the AJC top 50 hoping to land 10 of them , but what if the ten we land are alll skill folks, where does that leave our offensive line or defensive line? Short on depth.

Wilder’s dad REALLY wants him to play RB, not LB…so dont get your hopes up for him to be stopping up the middle. I personally think at his size, he should play LB. Most BIG running backs (with some exceptions like Eddie George) don’t last all that long when they get to the NFL (IF they get to the NFL). He’s 6′ 2″ and 225 now and they will pack another 20 lbs of muscle onto him in college (although looking at him, God knows where it will go!).

One point the Auburn fans have yet to realize is:

That under the re-instatement agreement that Auburn had with the NCAA was that Cecil Newton would have no contact at Auburn, any activities, games, or NCAA sponsored events. Jay Jacobs announced prior to the game that Cecil Newton would not be in attendance. But sure enough on more than 4 occassions one Cameron Newton could be seen looking up in a section of the stadium during the game. So that lets you know several things, that Cecil knowingly thumbed his nose at Auburn and the NCAA and that Cameron Newton was aware of it.

Do not give me that crap about it being his son, he agreed along with his attorney to stay away and not to attend anything related to Auburn to regain his son’s eligibility status. Just another case of lies on top of lies from both Cecil and Cameron Newton.

Just to make my point, the Rogers character also signed the same agreement with Mississippi St, and his is to be reviewed for re-instatement in 10 years.

No. 1 The AJC pays these writers, blogger and whomever to write articles that draw readership in either print or online. That is how the advertisers set their rates and buy ad space.

No. 2 A good reporter reports facts, opinions, quotes, and anything that will provide better insight into what the article is being written about.

No. 3 A negative or inquisitive article provides the opportunity for readership responses. I know if I were a paid writer or reporter( which as you can tell I am not close to being) I would write articles that peaked the interest of a full range of fans and the largest fan base in my readership. the Gators have tons of talent and the only thing holding them back was the offense and the play at QB. I have to believe that Charlie Weis is a better OC than Steve Addazio….and he is a hell of a QB coach….so I think both the offense and Brantley (and he is coming back) will be much better next year….and with the Gator defense….they don’t have to be much better for the Gators to contend for the SEC title next year….and I think they will.

…..and….I think Driskel….will play some as a freshman too. If Charlie can work on his mechanics and decision making this spring (early enrollee), then Driskel might even beat Brantley out. But I hope Brantley makes progess and does well next year. He has the talent…but does he have the brains and guts? Story to be determined…..

Auburn
2006 11-2
2007 9-4 DECLINE STARTS
2008 5-7 ROCK BOTTOM – CHANGE COACH
2009 8-5 BIG IMPROVEMENT
2010 14-0 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

UGA
2006 9-4
2007 11-2
2008 10-3
2009 8-5 DECLINE STARTS
2010 6-7 ROCK BOTTOM @ NO COACHING CHANGE

Looks like Auburn made the necessary changes to win the BCS. UGA could not/would not pull the trigger to compete for a NC. So, the UGA AD delays the inevitable foe one more year while the rest of the SEC is improving. YIKES!!!!

Georgia should be co-last with Vanderbilt. That’s where we are as a program whether you like it or not, it’s reality.

Will be lucky to win 4 games next year. Starting out 0-2 after Boise and South Carolina. Things will go south after that.

No AJ to save us. No change in the coaching staff, except that Richt is somehow going to become an “expert” in the off season.

Richt is a clown. Should have went and got Kirby Smart. Kirby has studied and been tutored under Nick Saban. I would say that Kirby would also model his program after what has been done at Alabama. But no, let’s keep Richt and keep suffering.

Mark, you’re naming recruits and non-starters as most of our “returning talent”.

Gone are: Houston, Green, Dent, Dowtin, Durham, Boling

Roster-wise, 2011 is a rebuilding year for UGA. There’s no telling how many freshmen and sophomores we’ll have to play.

Agree, your #8 SEC projection for UGA is about right though.

I think some of you stopped off in Mexico on way home from Liberty Bowl with some of the theories I’m reading. Whatever it is I certainly enjoy your comments.
How is it Boise is ranked so high after losing 23 seniors? Yes I know, they played 60 players, but so did a lot of programs. UGA definately has enough talent to beat Boise at the Dome this year.
Also noticed people here talking about SC, with Garcia at QB next year…..won’t happen, Connor Shaw from Flowery Branch will be starting QB at SC next year.

Grantham was a terrible choice for DC. But all the fans were clammoring for a 3-4 and a big splash hire. You should have gone after Manny Diaz, that guy was rock solid this year. I’m real bummed that Texas swooped in and stole him with a ‘huge’ contract for a guy with just one year in the SEC. (that ought to show you how good he was). Coach Richt is trying to please his fanbase too much and it is costing him.

I’m very excited though our (MS State) new CoDC/LB coach seems like Manny Diaz 2.0

“Grantham was a terrible choice for DC”

How do you figure he was a terrible hire?

Anyone with any kind of football acumen knows you can’t judge a defense in the first year when you are changing schemes.

He went to a 3-4 with 4-3 personel.
The terminology is different.
He didn’t have a TRUE 3-4 NT.

It’s football not a microwave dinner!

BTW- compare Granthum’s 1st year 3-4 stats to Bama’s when Saban and Smart took over. You will find their stats are very similar. What changed for them year two? Mount Cody. Also, had K.Smart come to UGA, Saban would have hired Granthum. He also tried to hire him when he was at Miami, but Granthum had already committed to the Cleveland job.

That’s why John Jenkins is the biggest recruit need we have even over Rome, Crowell, and Mitchell.

2011 is a total rebuilding year for the UGA Dawgs….Please fans I think it be best for everyone to lower expectations for next year. If not, you are going to get your feelings hurt again. We are paper thin at every position and have done a bad job of recruiting the past 2 seasons. I look for 2012 to be CMR’s make or break season unless he goes 4-8 in 2011. I am thinking another 6-6.

UGA will be the surprise team of the SEC next year. The DL will be 20lbs more stout per position. Adding Jenkins will only further help that. They will start the season with a year of experience in the system and with a QB who will begin next season as a seasoned veteran as opposed to a kid trying to get used to the speed of the game at the college level. Those two things will make a huge difference on those close games we lost this year. If Crowell or some of the FR are able to help out then all the better but I am saying it won’t be necessary for UGA to be better.

Even if we get Crowell, Richt the idiot will redshirt him just like he did Knowshon Moreno. Don’t look for any help from Crowell next year. For all those who say Christian LeMay is the answer, ditto on him, redshirt.

Our recruiting class is not that strong, don’t expect great things from any of them next year. Basically the same team as this year, minus our best player(AJ Green) and several other good ones.

I agree we will be the surprise team of the SEC. We will surprise everyone by only winning 4 games this year, not 6 like this past season.

A team that scored 6 points against UCF will not beat Tennessee in Knoxville. Will not beat Miss State at home. May not even beat Kentucky at home, but I gave them that one just for being the home team. I think 4 wins is about right. Could be 3 though.

First of all, South Carolina didn’t achieve a “breakthrough” – they were the beneficiaries of the weakest SEC East in memory, and they still finished just 9-5, yet another 5-loss or more season under Spurrier.

Auburn might be ranked a little low. Confidence alone should elevate them higher.

Georgia’s ranking appears about right. And when it happens, it will be predictable. Why Georgia needed one more year to convince itself that Richt is done is beyond me, but so be it. “Wait ’till next year!” in this case means literally next year – the 2012 season.

Grantham can turns things around for sure, I was stating that I feel he had a much much less succesful season than Manny Diaz had in his first year at MSU. Of course Manny just got called up to Texas for big money, se we lose anyway. The only reason I’m stating this is because Diaz was not the ‘glamour’ pick being from Middle Tenn State so he didn’t get hired. I humbly feel that UGA fans are always out looking for the big splash or mega star players that can come in and make it happen just for the sake of being there. Talent comes from all different places not just programs or kids with hype. Finding and developing real potential is where greatness is made.

I think one reason a lot of coaches taking over a new program have success early is that they are forced to develop the team they inherit, not just put the pieces together and expect it to work because all the kids are 4 & 5 star players. If Richt is going to turn UGA around he needs to get dirty, teach toughness, fundamentals, effort, the O line looked overweight and slow, the RB’s have fumbleitis, etc… Back to basics, break it down and build it back with a rock solid foundation.

But what do I know, I’m just a message board coach.

The good news is that football games are decided on the field…not by articles or opinions offered by a douchebag sports columnist Mark Bradley. Just for the record, Mark Bradley is no UGA fan, he is just a stinkstirrer, and someone who is insanely jealous of Coach Mark Richt. The interesting thing is after talking to one of Mark Bradley’s childhood friends, it appears as a kid he was the same pathetic person he is today. He was always the last one picked and once the games finally started, he would start crying because he was fouled, then start crying and take his ball, and go home to play with himself (just like the adult version of Mark Bradley.) UGA fans, those of you who are being suckered in to this hate Coach Richt spill by the never was nor never will be Mark Bradley are just like all these ignorant college kids who voted Obama into office. Since Coach Richt began his tenure at Ga, even including the last two seasons, UGA averages one of the highest end of the year ranking teams in the country. Just to put it in perspective, during the same tenure of Mark Bradley’s job at AJC, the AJC circulation has dropped to an all time low and they have extremely curtailed their delivery areas. Now based on non-disputable numbers, who do you think should be fired?

Bradly NEVER has anything good to say about UGA, yet, constantly sucks up to the teat of CPJ? Why aren’t there articles about how Johnson needs to go, that he can’t even win in the ACC? The season is over and Auburn is… #1. :D We are #1 and UGA ended 7-6… oh wait, scratch that off those senior trophies, 6-7. :D

Also, Georgia fans, speaking really just to the obnoxious ones, how many undefeated teams have you had since the 1980 National Championship? 0.

How many has Auburn had? 3. And with 3 different coaches.

Georgia was up 21-7 against Auburn and lost 49-31… man, no wonder you guys are soooo mad. But don’t get upset, here are 10 reasons why Georgia will go undefeated in 2010. :D

I think honestly UGA will beat UF this coming year. Muschamp (the dork with blood on his face trying to coach) and Weiss are going to be nothing more than a college version of the Redskins. Buying all the wrong people for the wrong price. The wheels came off that wagon last year and I don’t see them improving. UGA could even win the East but it probably won’t take more than a .500 winning percentage to pull that off and thus it won’t mean a thing other than being the doormat in the SEC Championship for the SEC West team.

Of the 5 consecutive national championships by 4 different teams, 3 of those teams were SEC West and 1 was SEC East. The power is not in the SEC but in the SEC West. The problem is for UGA the first game will be a loss to BOI and then if you look at the schedule and given what UGA is right now going into this off season it’s easy to see a 1-3 start and then a 1-6 or 2-6 start.

Then what?

MADDOG

A 1-6 or 2-6 start but then beat Florida and probably win most the remaining games except Auburn… the defending national champs. :D So 1-6 or 2-6 start followed by a 5-6 end.

I would like to believe differently, but I’m not optimistic about next season. That’s the same way I was in Goff’s and Donnan’s final seasons as well. Like most of you, I have fairly high expectations for our program. And contrary to some of the “less-than-learned” individuals like “Rammer Jammer” who post their “why do UGA fans think they’re an elite program”rants, UGA fans should always have high expectations. Anyone with half a brain and who knows anything about football knows that the state of GA produces some of the highest quality HS football players in the country. Thus the Univ. of GA should have the highest quality players. And, according to the experts, UGA has had some of the highest ranked classes over the past 10 years of any program. Anyone who says differently will have to argue with the experts. Our problem over the past several years is LEADERSHIP, or lack thereof. We’ve settled for second best and that’s what we’ve gotten. Every program has done that at some point. Question this and I’ll give you examples. No matter what program you point to. We UGA fans should not settle for mediocracy. We should insist on excellence. But we’ve gotten used to the former and that’s what we’ll get next season. So, if the team reeks next season like it did this season, we need to stay home and let the admin. know that we’re not going to settle for “crap” anymore. If they get that me$$age, they’ll make changes for the better. Otherwise we’ll get what we’ve gotten.

I said this many times this year. be carefule what you wish for. We could go back and get Ray Goff casue we were so could before CMR got here. Idiots he got you 2 sec titles and played for a 3rd. Since 82 you have not been there. And Fran your a disgrace to be a uga alum. Everyone learn to stand behind your coach and maybe big time recruits will show up. No one wants to go where everyone always bad mouthing coach and team. Coach richt I got your back most dummies forget what you have done for UGA before you we had 0 sec titles. GO DAWGS!!

Wasn’t it just last year that the mad hatter Les Miles was on the hot seat at LSU? He turns it around and gets a contract extension for 7 more years! Can Richt follow suit?
