Fran is in 4 HOFs. When one on of the football team’s most famous alumni throws you under the bus, people pay attention. CMR is on borrowed time and the recruits know it. 18 year old kids are not interested in saving someones job, they want to win.

Mark Richt is the fifth winningest active college football coach in the country…Fran Tarkenton has lost more Super Bowls than anyone save Jim Kelly.

I think we might be going a bit overboard here…it’s 18-21 year old kids. Some years are good some are not. Grab a bit of perspective and be a fan not a critic.

I totally agree with Mr. Tarkenton. I think Mark Richt is a wonderful guy, but our program has totally spun out of control. The arrests that the program is experiencing is totally embarrassing, and it just seems to get worse every year. When not one , but two Georgia alumni say Thanks but no thanks to an opportunity to come back and be a coach has got to bring attention to the fact their is a problem at UGA. If you are not winning and also getting offensively shut down by UCF kids are not gonna want to play here. You can’t blame them for not wanting to be a part of a rebuilding phase. They want to win and win now because they only have four years to do it. I love UGA and will till I die so I hope and pray they pull it together soon.

First of all Fran, it’s the CANDLER School of Theology, not Campbell. Second, I don’t have a dog in this fight (as my posting name might imply), but it’s a sad day for any school, UGA included, when a fine man gets skewered like this for two off seasons. Clearly there are problems in Athens, but they are fixable. All of the uproar seems about one season premature – appropriate if the Dawgs stumble again next year, not now. It would serve Fran well to remember that coaching changes can backfire, too.

I hear what Tarkenton has to say and improvement is a must, but coming from a person with his track record of beating people out of wives, money, business interests, etc., I don’t accept it. Many people don’t know the dirty little things about Tarkenton. Maybe he can’t stand to see a man who stands for something.

People defending CMR are touting his record bolstered primarily by wins in his first 6 years, that was 4 years ago folks. It’s more than that, though, he’s lost control of his players and the program. I think it’s the easy and the right choice. Dooley didn’t have these serious discipline problems, and it’s a bad comparison in support of Richt because recruiting is more competitive now than it was in Dooley’s day. Richt lacks the passion and the direction, he needs to quit and become a missionary full time.

Fran may think he’s a friend of UGA but I would say he’s an enemy! Do I agree with him on his assessment of the situation? Maybe… probably, but wait until after national signing day! We need every recruit thinking this is the best place in the world to play and that the people that recruited them will be here when they get here. This has become big news in GA not helpful to the “DREAM TEAM”. Fran is either an enemy or a moron. What he is doing is not helping UGA. If it needs to be said say it in in late February or March.

I’ve asked numerous naysayers on your blogs to make out a staff and no body can give answers. All the answers I get are: ummm Dan Mullen, ummm Kirby Smart, Chris Petersen. I’ve never liked Fran Tarkenton but on this I have to totally agree. CMR was hired to win football games AND championships. In the past 3 years, he has been terrible at both. CMR is a good Christian but that is not part of his job description. Give him the pink slip now!

Fran is 100% right. I think about all of the other great coaches and how fired up they are during games and how competent they are and how they can make adjustments……….then I think of Richt who has to take Nodoze to stay awake during games because of his lethargy. Letting someone who is “not a good coach” stay another year in hopes that he learns how to be a good coach and magically will turn things around is a bad decision on the part of Adams and McGarity. I don’t understand why they insist on forcing UGA to go through another horrible year before they then make a HC change. What do they think will be gained?? The anwer is nothing.

UGA BugKiller you are right on. Not only that but due to poor planning and recuriting the dogs will not be able to dominate the line of scrimmage because there is nothing in the pipeline.. A freshman will not be able to come in the SEC and be a force. We will be pushed around again next year. CMR will not address problems until they are out of control. i.e. penalties, defense under Willie, arrests, Strenght and conditioning.

Well said UGABugKiller! The SIGNS are all there. Anyone defending Mark Richt right now and not holding him accountable must be related to him. Fran Tarkenton is not just a former athlete, he is one of the all-time greats at Georgia and is an NFL Hall of Famer. His comments are right on the money, and he is just calling it like it is. He’s been a winner all of his life, from leading Athens High to a State Championship against mighty Valdosta and Wright Bazemore to an SEC Championship with Georgia to an NFL great whose records as a QB stood for almost two decades. Any fans not wanting to face reality at this point simply need to get out of the way, you don’t know what you’re talking about. The Dawgs will be back, just not with CMR at the helm.

3. Allowing Bryan Evans to start. SELF EXPLANATORY.

4. 2007 Tennessee and 2008 Alabama.

5. Not winning the sec EAST with 1st rounders @ QB, RB, and WR

6. Recruiting. Yeah RECRUITING. Richt is unable to put a fence around GA bc he fails to get on these kids EARLY. Barely recruiting Greg reid, not recruiting Cam

Unfortunately I think Fran’s all too correct. And I was thinking the same thing when I heard Richt’s presser. I think he’s just biding his time and depositing another $3 mil. I don’t think his heart is in it and hasn’t been for at least 3 seasons. Next season will be more of the same, or worse, and we’ll be looking again. I guess it’s just a natural progression, but we are paying these coaches WAY too much. We’ll see how much fire Cheesestick and Sabin have in the next few seasons. And Cheesestick won’t have nearly as big of a payroll now that half of the top *AU Boosters are in prison. Throw a probation on top of that and he’s in a world of hurt. Maybe *AU could hire Kiffin next!

Is this the same Fran Tarkenton who had all sorts of trouble with unethical business dealings many years ago.

The 2010 dawgs averaged 32.1 points per game . . exactly the same as the 2002 (13-1) season. We had 68 penalties this year compared to 101 that season (108 last year when everyone was moaning about that). Problem has been strength/conditioning and replacing VanGOrder has proved to be a significant challenge. If Crowell and Drew don’t commit . .. that will raise an eyebrow because it signals we have significant PR issues . . . moreso a coach who doesnt know how to win. Those who want Richt fired view him in a bubble. Situation is fluid.

Instead of flapping your gums and stomping your feet, take a second to really think about this season and what happened.

UGA lost 7 games this year with a freshman QB in the toughest conference in America.

USC – away game, pretty close game lost to future SEC east champ, and Spurrier prepares for this game in January. Even Lord Saban lost to these boys. Maybe Bama should fire him.

ARK – Could’ve won the game but defense gave up too many big plays. Lost to future Sugar Bowl rep from SEC that only lost two SEC games, AL and AU.

MISS ST. – Vastly underrated at the start of the year. Lost to them on the road in a game that was, again, not a blow out. After this loss everyone thought “what’s wrong with UGA?” Now we know that we lost to a pretty good team. They lost to AU by 3 pts.

COLORADO – No excuse here. I know, on the road, fumble with a chance to win, blah, blah, blah. Shouldn’t have been close.

UF – Annual brain fart. Only way to explain it. Also, CMR got out coached and a freshman QB looked like a freshman QB for a game. Tough OT loss but again should have been a W.

AUB – Future SEC and NC. Pulled off onside kick to start 2nd half and momentum never got back in hands of dawgs. Tough fight but tip of the hat to future Nat. Champs. No debating that loss.

UCF – Again, a pretty good team. Close game. Not pretty, but an L. Just like Miss St. people wonder “how can you lose to them?”. Apparently a few people have. We again lost to a pretty good, and underrated team.

I know we have a lot of work to do to fix some issues with the team on and off the field. Just think fans need to put into perspective that, even though we lost 7 games this year, it was not as bad as sports writers like Mark Bradley and Jeff Schultz would have you believe. Fans need to support the coaches and team instead of buying into the gloom and doom of the AJC. Fran isn’t doing his old school any favors by publicly ripping the current coaching staff.

When Mark Richt was the offensive coordinator at Florida State they had the most talent in the country. I watched them constantly lose to Miami not really because of wide right but because Richt would undercoach after they passed the fifty yard line. Im not a coach yet I can call the plays before they run them by the formation that they line up in. If I know what they are running the coaches that study in the winter surely know. Bowden should have won numerous national championships with the talent he had, recent Spurrier commetns attest to that.

Whether you like it or not, Tarkenton has a point with the arrest, and the direction of mentality surrounding the Georgia program. You folks calling him a fool are the fools. You can’t argue statistics, and the legal issues have only increased as the on the field success has decreased. I think Coach should get the benefit of the doubt, seeing as all coaches and teams have down years, but as long as these legal problems occur, there is no room for that, not even for a good Christian man with morals that is getting paid $3 million a year while the rest of the country struggles to find jobs. All of the donations and booster money should not be going to pay for the education of these kids who decide to break the law. They are under a microscope when they sign the dotted line, and accept their $50,000 a year scholarships, plus benefits they receive from Nike, Georgia, and bowl games. They know this, and yet continue to test the boundaries.

I hate losing more than anyone, but I can handle a few losses here and there. But I cannot handle these punk kids and their egos that go out and deface society as they do, and bring negative attention to the program. I’m 26 years old, and was no choir boy, but I also never received compensation like these kids either. The attitudes of these players is ridiculous, and it all starts with the coaches and them getting these kids in line. You never see a Les Miles or Nick Saban team this out of line.

It will be $4 million dollars cheaper for UGA to get rid of Richt next year than this year. I hope Richt turns it around.I disagree with Fran, it has been a lot worse. I loved Ray Goff, but I remember going to games in that era and us not being able to compete against the better SEC teams. We competed against Auburn this year, and had a chance to win. I also heard a rumor in Athens over the weekend that Richt was not able to retain some of the past assistant coaches because Damon Evans was very tight on the budget. I heard that $100,000 cost us Van Gorder for GA Southern, and $50,000 cost us Kirby Smart. If things get worse or they get better I am a DAWG no matter what!!!!

In business, you don’t lose 3 million dollars 3 years in a row and keep slapping backs and welcome back those who caused it. Hello Mark Richt. In Fairness, he finally Fired Wille, but it was year to late. He had to settle on Grantham ( he demanded a 3 year deal, he know Mark was on a short leash). Fran is right. Hell, we all love Mark, but we love UGA winning football also. His offense is stale and predictable and he refuses to change a thing. Recruiting has had to many “misses’ lately and he let the program slip so far most blue of bluest recruits are looking for better run programs. I hope for the best next year, but our first two games are tough, and lose those, gonna be hard holding that team together.

I remember when CMR first got here the change was apparent. he was known as an offensive mind. Problem with CMR is he really is too nice.

I do not agree with him letting Bobo take over play calling duties. It appears as if it must have been a relief for him to let go of that chore, but now we have lost too many close games for him to let the “O” be run by Bobo. Bobo does not “step-on-the-throat” of the other team. I have seen us run the ball well on one play, only to get sacked on the very next play, on a seven yard drop, when we could have just kept on drive blockin’ our way downfield.

I think offensive balance is great, but if we can drive block, then let’s drive block……and win the game, rather than look cute statistically……

Fran Tarkington’ s recent opinion on Mark Richt coaching ability comes as shocker to anyone familiar with his position as a legendary UGA alum. I don’t remember Mr. Tarkington’s comments following the 2001 (8-4), 2002 (13-1), 2003 (11-3), 2004 (10-2), 2005 (10-3), 2006 (9-4), 2007 (11-2), 2008 (10-3), & 2009 (8-5) but we do know what he thought about this past season. What is so remarkable about such outrageous comments is that is comes from someone in which we would expect wisdom first & emotions last. It would seem natural that Mr. Tarkington show his years of experience by reminding us that before the 1960 championship season (10-1) that Wally Butts preceding 4 years looked like this: 1955 (4-6), 1956 (3-6-1), 1957 (3-7), and 1958 (4-6). If your going to blame the coaches for the losses you’ve got to give them credit for the wins. You can’t have it both ways. Even if Mark Richt were to have a second loosing season he would still go down as one of the most remarkable coaches the Un of Ga has ever had.

But it seems I have misjudged Mr. Tarkington all these years. As a contemporary of his at the University I would have expected him to realize now is the time to rally around the UGA flag, promoting what Mark Richt does well, and giving us some insights on how as a fanbase we can help our athletic administration & coaches to accomplish our goal; to put together a team that we can be proud of both on & off the field.

Tarkenton was remarkably on the money with his comments. It was a breath of fresh air, what amazes me is how many people are disassociating themselves with Fran. He just didn’t start this on Friday, he has been very consistent and correct with his predictions of Georgia the whole year. You go to a cocktail party and mention to a Georgia fan the name Fran Tarkenton and you get about the same negative reaction you get bringing up Obama. Friends you have a mess in Athens, not just in a team you all have over hyped, but in character. Anyone from Georgia talking about Cam Newton is truly in denial of his own situation. Tarkenton would have sounded like an idiot saying anything else. About the only radio show that is not gummed up with clueless northeastern transplants that understand nothing besides professional sports, including hockey, is 790 in that window they have Tony and Durham and that 15 minute segment of Tarkenton on 680. It literally gives a old southern boy like me a headache to hear big hat and no cattle Yankees try to talk about college football. I think 680 has one west coast jelly belly that I have no dealt is paid by doughnuts from the University of Georgia bakery to spin it the way he is fed. Why can’t we have more like Fran, but you have to pay grownup talent more money don’t you.

I really respect Richt, but We have sit here and seen LSU, Florida, Alabama, and Auburn win national championships over the past few years. We have recruited as well or better than those schools in the last 7 or 8 years. Where is our national title? I know it seems we never catch any breaks, but good teams make their own breaks sometimes. Im tired! I follow recruiting almost daily and I count the days til fall. Im just tired of having my heart broke!!!!!!!!

Finally! One of the most famous Bulldogs ever tells it like it is. And what it is is bad. I have been saying for the past two years that Mark Richt is no longer SEC Caliber…if he ever was. His program has been in decline since the last of Jim Donnan’s players graduated (or used up their eligibility). Since he has been at UGA two different coaches have won BCS titles at LSU. Nick Saban won another one at Bama. Urban Myer won two at Florida. And now Gene Chisik has won a title at Auburn. And both Myer and Chisik won titles in their second seasons as head coaches. I think the only thing Mark Richt learned from Bobby Bowden was how to over stay his welcome!

I don’t think Mark Richt is a “cancer” on this program-he has had success in the past and he has recruited well. I’ll tell you one thing though, when we get a talent like Stafford, Moreno, or Green, we tend to focus solely on those players and those players only. To win a Championship-you need a TEAM effort. I’m not saying having great players is a bad thing, but when our team goes 1-4 without AJ Green and then 5-2 with him, what does that tell you? It means that Mark Richt and Bobo rely too much on those players who are game changers rather than utilizing ALL their weapons.

This is why when UGA didn’t have any big names on teams of old (from ‘01-06 basically) they were a better TEAM unit. Richt’s gotten to concerned with recruiting highly and not developing players around the stars they have (and this I suspect, is also why Moreno, Stafford and green left early). if they saw a UGA TEAM that actually did well and was winning championships, they would be more apt to stay instead of bolting after 3 years. We’ve become a funnel for the NFL-no more, no less.

Not having AJ Green on our team next year could be the best thing to happen to us. Because, now, we won’t just have #8 to throw to like Bobo and Richt like to do, they’ll have to find other ways to get the ball down the field which I believe they can do with players like T. King, Marlon Brown, and Orson Charles on our offense..

And right now its heading straight past Vandy to the bottom of the SEC. We’re losing instate recruits to other schools because they see the writing on the wall as well. Georgia’s problem is recruiting the wrong players in the state. If a WR is under 6′, Georgia may not recruit him. The shorter receiver may be better than the 6′ 2″ receiver.

The numbers do not lie, this program is and has been heading in the wrong direction for at least the past 3 years for whatever reasons. The question has been when to pull the plug? Now? Or next year barring a miraculous reversal? The powers that be have determined to wait another year. That’s what we’ll have to do.

Fran Talkenton has not been of the UGA Campus in years. He is not envolved in UGA Atheltics at all. @Rick..to address several of your comments. my point is that whether what Fran said is true or not and whether you agree with his comments doesn’t matter…the fact that he publically called out Coach Richt and the program the way he did it to me is a little classless in my opinion…There are proper channels for UGA x-players to make their concerns known in a respectful manner…what Fran did and has been doing is more like tabloid talk…I’m still waiting for you or anyone to tell me how what he says helps this program right now, in the middle of recruiting…convince me and other dawgs that it was the right thing to do and that it will make our team stronger for next year…We already know who our HC will be next year, everyone from our AD, Coaches, Players, Fans know the score and what the expectations are…There is nothing that Fran said that helps this program in any manner, so in my opinion, his words are irrelevant…

i heard the interview last week and couldn’t agree more.
Most people will focus on the way Tark sounded instead of the dead-on points he was making.
Tark is abrasive and may rub people the wrong way….
But i’m sure he’s earned the right to express his opinions on the state of the union at UGA football.

Richt’s real problem is, he is just not very smart. His solution to a losing season is to hire a fitness coach and “study football.” He is earning three million dollars a year to know football. Is studying football going to reduce the arrest rate? Perhaps Richt should study criminology. If Richt wins seven games next year, he will say he is making progress. It will take a couple of years more of Richt, then two or three more years to straighten things out, provided Georgia gets a good coach, and that is only if Adams should go away.

What does F Tarkenton know about winning championships? He never won a championship in college or the pros.

F Tarkenton was an indecisive QB who couldn’t decide whether he should run or pass, so every team he played on never won a championship.

Sorry, but get advice from champions, not guys who don’t know how to win a championship.

For the last time on this ugly subject ……………UGA ( Adams and McGarity ) know the issues concerning Mark Richt but ……………but the contractual arragements in force at this time 2010-2011 are simply too expensive to fire them all and then go out and HIRE a new regime for millions more. That would cost UGA Ath Board or what have you around $12,000,000.00- $14,000,000.00

This is very easy to fathom ………right now UGA is $$$ stuck. Short of Richt winning around 9+ games with a signature win vs Florida and Arkansas and MSU and SC ………….GT is always a given …………..Richt will be fired. I think he would survive an ugly Boise outting in The Ga. Dome, if UGA does not stumble again vs Ark and SC and MSU and UT. McGarity right now wants to see upward mobility in the SEC FIRST.

Here this …………….lose to Boise and then go 1-5 ………….. he will be fired mid year. HE has allowed the program to drift and if this last sceanrio takes shape ( 1-5 ) he will deserve no further kindness or loyalty.

Maybe this will wake up all you “Blind Homers” out there. I’ve been saying this for 2 years now. Mark is a good Christian guy, but that’s just the problem, he’s a follower not a leader. He says that he wants to retire a UGA man, he may not have a choice, after the coming 2011 season, he may not be able to get a job in coaching. He may however make a good preacher. Just to clarify something, practically, and I will say Practically, not all but most contracts when being bought out are negotiable and the numbers on the contract are the ceiling price of the contract.
So if UGA really wanted to buy out the contract he would negoitiate with them to walk away with a clause as most coaches do in stating that if he accepts another job the original school will pay the difference up to levels 1, 2 or 3 on the contract. I know that sounds confusing but that is what happened with Zook, Donnan, Shula, Fulmer, and many many other.

UGA could buy it out but the gutless leadership are just that gutless.

People forget that only 3 seasons ago, UT had about 5 utter miracles happen for them in late season games, or else it would have been UGA vs. a beaten-up LSU team, most likely followed by UGA in the title game. Or that Auburn had a number of amazing things happen this year (such as Alabama missing several chances to bury them early). Or that Texas’ superstar quarterback was injured in the previous title game with Alabama. So many things can happen to prevent or allow a title.

I believe you will see a much higher level of focus, discipline, and drive next year, and the results will be far better. In fact, as early as three weeks from now, if most of the big-time recruits being discussed elsewhere pick UGA, then suddenly there will be positive momentum, and all eyes will turn with optimism to the spring.

I will always put UGA first. Unfortunately I’m very frustrated with the current payroll in Athens and their performance over the last 3 years; coaching, and administration. I love our boys though, and only wish for them ultimate success in all their endeavors. Auburn just proved with the correct mix of coaching, administration, and fan euphoria miracles can happen. Auburn hasn’t out recruited anyone in the SEC lately but just won a NAT”L CHAMPIONSHIP with 3 and 4 star talent and a whole lot of luck. Who in their right mind would have ever thought the Auburn team of 3, 2 or even 1 year ago was capable of this. Fran is frustrated! I’m frustrated! But, right now, it is all about recruiting and finishing off this class like we’ve never finished a class off before, and then dedicating ourselves 110% to the task at hand. If CMR turns this around, great! If he doesn’t then I’m confident UGA will hire formidable men to coach our boys and make them champions! For UGA, please get behind Richt and this coaching staff and lets support them in their efforts to turn this thing around. To all the recruits, UGA isn’t unlike any other institution seeking the highest levels of success in its academics and athletic pursuits. Recently, AL, Auburn, UF, FSU, USC, UT have all fallen on tough times. All are great institutions seeking excellence in all aspects of their programs and several are enjoying great success. It’s a sad day when people get down on a coach who has done a lot for this UGA, give CMR some slack, he will turn it around so what we’ve been down 3 yrs, you don’t think coach Bowden, Paterno, Dooley and others had loosing records before. The bottom line is everyone wants a mircowave winning team, it goes beyond X’s and O’s. Bulldog Nation is mad watching 4 other SEC teams win it all, we will get there. Coach Richt and staff need to show more passion and grit, staff and players need to know there job is on the line each week, still can be a family environment. No one complain when we were winning 10, 11, 12 games each year stop the madness and support the home team or give off the wagon, we win it all this up coming season and then what……. still get rid of CMR…….. really?

Loved Fran Tarkenton as a kid, but he and Georgia fans have gotten spoiled by Mark Richt’s early success. Georgia’s winning percentage with Vince Dooley was about 72%, which included periods of 2 or 3 poor seasons in a row a few times. Richt’s winning percentage is over 74%. Tarkenton said Georgia has had 3 straight poor seasons, but 10-3, 8-5, 5-6 is not something unheard of for Georgia and is not something to push the panic button about. Heck, Fran Tarkenton had seasons of 3-7, 4-6, l0-1, and 6-4 at Georgia (57% winning percentage). Overall, Georgia is more successful overall than ever………..we have never been a perennial national powerhouse, like Southern Cal, but our fans seem to expect an SEC Championship every year! Richt needs to make some changes and he knows it, but talk of firing him is definitely too radical.

The Vikings had one of the best head coaches to ever coach in the NFL. They also had one of the all time great defenses in the history of the NFL. They had a pretty good offense and i think went to the Super Bowl i think two or three times and lost them all. They were lacking one thing. A quarterback that wouldn’t choke in the big game. Guess who that quarterback was. I was a big fan of his until today but no more.

It’s entirely possible that CMR, who has not only won more games than Dooley in his first ten, a stat you might could excuse since CMR has had more regular season games than Dooley had, but his percentage of wins is significantly higher, as well. Dooley coaching this day and age would never make ten years, and he has stated so himself.
Richt has earned the right to turn this thing around. As I see it, we’re in year two or maybe three of the turnaround. One more should be all he gets, and I’m a huge Richt supporter.

All I’m asking for is progressive ownership of this program. UGA is being left behind, if you don’t believe it then, I we may settle for mediocrity for a long time. Alsa, we have a new AD and he may see things accordingly. I suspect this is the cause of Richt’s new DEDICATION. Will he make a difference now? I don’t know,…but I do know this, if you knew something was wrong with your dedication,why didn’t you address this before now?

Fran should keep his opinion to himself until after the national signing day. He is potentially discouraging high school recruits from signing with UGA because of a potential head coaching change that may never happen as far as the immediate future is concerned. Cry wolf enough on the status of the UGA football program and you get what you were not asking for which a further downtrotten football program when you run off the best recruits with ranting and raving about how bad the UGA football program has become. Stop tearing the program apart and be part of the solution not part of the problem. Suggestions as to how to build a stronger program at UGA are in order not making comments extremely critical of the UGA football program or coaching staff. Recruiting errors were made when we recruited Stafford and UGA did not have other top notch quartebacks willing to sit behind Stafford. Cox was already there but the cupboard was bare for just a short while before bringing in Murray and Mettenberger. A long list of injured offensive linemen over the last 5 years has not helped either. Let’s pull together and get behind our coaches and the recruiting program and go to work.

I think you’re right, “Coach Fran”. I think Frank Tarkenton would be an excellent head coach, but he is right about Richt. It seems McGarrity came back to Athens to retire and doesn’t want any controversy; I guess that was his role at UF, to fly under the radar and stay out of the way and get coffee for everyone. We obviously chose another passive person be involved in running athletics at UGA. Too many in the Bulldog Nation are ok with mediocrity, I’m afraid. The program is in a tailspin that is not recoverable as long as Richt (and McGarrity, too, I’m afraid)is in charge.

Mark — Thanks again for all of your support this year, I couldn’t continue to under perform without the backing of loyal followers such as yourself. I especially appreciate how you and Jeff ignored completely my losing the bowl game and posting a losing record, one season off of winning the ACC with Chan’s players. Admittedly, the ACC is a crap conference, but for one glorious season we were the tallest midget. Whatever the case, that is history now and all can say is thanks again for sweeping 2010 under the rug for me. Not one column about how I laid an egg this year and ended the season so miserably, your the best! Toddles!!!

Tarkenton was a star in a different time. They could have 100 players on the team, Discipline was tougher, and the competition in recruitment was divided at the time between historical black schools and the ncaa schools. The whole culture was different. Can he possibly do what anyone does today in coaching? I have my doubts. He should just not get to bent out of shape about the program. One other thing back when he played freshmen could not play and no one left school after three years for the nfl. I do not believe the SEC was as competitive then either.

I think the comments made by the famous alum is frustration felt by many of Dawg supporters…..me included (but my words were not as calm as Fran’s)…But the truth of the situation is that CMR has in fact has earned the right for one more year. We just need to respect that. Here is how I see it…..Benchmarks for Richt and asst coaches 1 recruiting a great well rounded class with need and quality…2 the Boise State game(Win or nothing)….3 Improvement from Defense (I think we have very good defensive coaches but should show telltale signs of improvement in this 2nd year…4 If Bobo is the offensive mind that CMR says he is then he should be let loose and make or break in the first 4 ball games…5 complete turn around in attitude and effort of the team as a whole. We will know by the second game of the year if 1 and 2 are fulfilled. If either of both come up short then it spells the end of CMR. At this point the AD would have the season to do a proper search and evaluation of coaches and can make the change as smoothly as florida did with Muschamp. (They had more time to work on this than we know.

Fran is on 680 the Fan every week. He is basically a curmudgeon and is apparently very bitter about they way things have turned out in Minnesota and here at UGA. Perhaps he feels he was slighted in his football career. Regardless, he has struck an chord that is resonant in the Dawg Nation has validity. Why is this coach admitting he hasn’t been giving 100%?

Agree Richt is a great man……..but the time is right for change. Hope AD has the guts to go ahead and make the move. Really wish MR would just resign and that would take the pressure off everyone.
The same goes for Paul Hewitt at GT..He also needs to move on..the writings on the wall………Both are hurting their programs.

Fran is a Bulldog for life and he like several others does not like the direction of the program. The downward spiral did not start this year and nothing has happenend to suggest that it will stop. We were preseason number 1 in 2008 with two number 1 draft picks and an early No.2 to Clevelend Browns ( Momass) and AJ who was outstanding in his freshman year, yet we got embarassed by Alabama, and loss several games that year despite been favored. I like Richt and I am in favor of him having another year but I doubt very strongly that he will turn things around. I believe that after this season Georgia should hire a good coach who will be able to bring in a solid staff to lift Georgia Football to elite status.

Now on to the subject of Fran Tarkenton. The man is a total “JURK” . Not half way, but all the way “JACKASS” of the century in my book. The man ( wait ) not man, but something else. I watched football and played football from the time I knew how to pronounce it. There were many great players to play between the hedges. Fran-ncy was not one. Everytime I saw Him I ask for an autogragh. I was 6, then 8, then9, then 10, then10 again, then 11, then 14. Finally when I saw him in Young Harris , I was there in a tennis camp, I was able to get really up close. I thought maybe know I caan get the autograph. Same as it always was, ( Get away kid I don’t have time for that s__t” ). His nose was so high if it rained he’d drown. Now that I’m older, I can reflect back on all this and say I was dead on ” RIGHT “. But he is correct about our coach, He hasn’t won anaything with his players, those were Donnans. fire his ass

Loved the comment about the spin CMR continues to put on his lack of productivity basically equals his refusal to take responsibility. The slope for CMR is getting steeper, I see no way he survives. The love for Georgia must be paramount, not for Richt or anyone else. It is a fact that if things were better in Athens, we would not be losing these recruting battles. We can only hope that some of these Kids consider Georgia this year. I hear Buck Belue blaming Rodney Garner for our dismal recruiting of the Georgia players, and consider that as most dishonest or stupid on his part. Mark Richt as the head coach is the closer and if he is not able to convince these recruits like Saban, Meyer and other SEC head coaches that’s too bad. Belue if we were winning and having a better control of the discipline problem more recruits would favor us. There are some Bulldogs fans and alums who would not mind if Ray Goff was still the HC at Georgia , because he too was a good man, only if he would win 9 games each year and lose to Florida and Tennessee. I see no reason why we have to play second to Florida, Alabama, LSU,and now Auburn and SC with Tennessee a team on the rise. At present we may be the 6th ranked team in the SEC which is not acceptable to most of us.

@Rick…I do think you have made your point more than once regarding Coach Richt….everyone knows your feelings and many agree…i personally do not agree with all you said, you made some good points but they are all mute for at least one more year..I’ll say one more time, wouldn’t it help to be a little more positive especially as we wind up recruiting season which could go a long ways in rebuilding this program and even if Coach Richt is not the man, then whomever takes over if and when that happens, will start with a very good group…don’t let the other schools drag you into the bashing of Coach Richt and our school…thats what Mr. BAMA and others want…i hope you can see that, you seem very passionate about the dawgs, don’t let them cause you to fall into their hatred of any success we might come upon…go dawgs

The fact remains Tarkenton knows a little about football and his opinion isn’t based on getting dissed over a flipping autograph. I’d take a minute and be objective here on what he has to say. Given the past 3 years of UGA football, don’t you think he may be on to something instead of on something..? Anyway, he’s a Dawg and wants to win. Spurrier isn’t a Dawg and he’s said things about UGA ( but with a measure of truth I might add) that would tick me off more than what Tarkenton said if I were a Pup… Anyway, down on the farm…

You know…i get the whole comparison of Bama, Fla, SC, Au…but how do you say Tenn is a team on the rise, and they may well be , but they finished with the same record we did, we beat the tar out of them this year, yet they are on the rise…yes they have young players, but so do we…We started a RS freshman QB and had a new DC this year along with several new assistants..I get the comparison to the other teams, but please don’t compare the dawgs and Tenn and say they are on the rise, but we are not…its not a valid argument right now, maybe next season, but not now….go dawgs

@Gen Neyland..the things Spurrier said about the dawgs was back in the Goff days…we all know his famous line…but to the best of my knowledge he has been very respectful to Coach Richt and the dawgs, the best that Spurrier can be as he is with other schools….not a very good comparison in my opinion, but its just my opinion…go dawgs

I have been covering CFB for the past 43 years. I agree with everything Tarkenton said. I like my preacher and I enjoy seeing him in the pulpit on Sunday. But I don’t want to see him coaching my football team on Saturday. We pay our preachers to save souls. We pay our football coaches to win games!
