Fran Tarkenton on 680 The Fan: UGA ‘is in in big trouble’

If you haven’t heard what Fran Tarkenton had to say regarding Mark Richt last Friday on 680 The Fan, you probably should. The most famous former Georgia Bulldog (non-Herschel division) eviscerated the Bulldogs’ coach and strongly suggested the program needs a new leader.

Francis T. began boldly — “What has happened over the last week with Georgia has been the most disturbing time I have seen in a long time; you know, people don’t want to look at reality” — and didn’t pause for breath. (A partial transcript is available at SportsRadioInterviews.com.)

Richt’s all-is-well press briefing of Jan. 4 apparently set Tarkenton’s teeth to gnashing. Concerning the announcement that Richt would re-immerse himself in the finer points of football, Tarkenton said this:

“Holy cow! Yesterday, where Mark Richt says, ‘I have been freed from administrative duties to spend more time on football.’ Then I quote him, he said, ‘The moves give [me] more time to study the game of football and be an expert and be on the cutting edge.’ What has he been doing for nine years? I have never heard any college, high school, professional coach [say] that [he] was not able to spend enough time on football.”

Asked by host Christopher Rude if Rich might have been devoting too much time to academics or somesuch, Tarkenton said:

“No, it sounds like a cop-out!  It sounds like, ‘I am not taking responsibility.  I have other things.’  We hire people to be football coaches.  We pay him and others millions of dollars to be football coaches, not to be administrators.  He didn’t do a very good job there — we had 12 people arrested this year, including a top-ranked quarterback who was a top kid that is now going to play LSU [Zach Mettenberger], and that has been going on forever.

“[Richt]  is a wonderful guy.  He is a good Christian guy.  He wants to be a missionary.  He goes on missions.  That is a wonderful thing. But do you know the religion of Nick Saban?  Or Gus Malzahn?  Or Chip Kelly playing for the national championship?  I don’t think we care what their religion [is].  We hire them to be football coaches.  If we are hiring religious instructors, let’s go to the Candler School of Theology over here in Decatur and get some of their people to come and coach our football team.”

Let the record note that Tarkenton is himself the son of a preacher. Which isn’t the same as being the son of a diplomat, and is evident throughout this diatribe. More Fran: “You’ve been there nine years [10, actually] and you say [you] haven’t had time to spend on football — if you don’t think that’s a problem, Georgia people, and [athletic director] Greg McGarity, if you don’t think the signs are there, my friend … Bad news does not get better with time.”

Regarding last week’s announcements that two top in-state prospects plan to sign with Alabama and Auburn, Tarkenton said:

” We’re going to lose the elite players this year. We haven’t in the past — we’ve gotten the elite player. We either didn’t choose right or we didn’t coach right, because we didn’t have success.

“Right now our program has had three years of regression, and I don’t see any way this thing is going to get out of the ditch. When I read comments like [Richt's] … we’re putting spin on everything. In the meantime Alabama and Auburn and Tennessee are working and kicking our butts and recruiting people and getting coaches that have spread offenses. I mean, can you imagine? We scored two field goals against Central Florida.”

The son of a preacher then offered a benediction: “I think Greg McGarity has got to look at this awfully hard, I think the signs are that we have a program that is in big trouble.”

And now you’re asking: How noteworthy is this? My answer: Very. It’s one thing for some newspaper guy (like this one) to carp about Richt, quite another for a most distinguished alum to sound the alarm. In the space of nine minutes, Sir Francis essentially said what more and more folks are thinking: That Georgia needs a new coach.

Thank you, Fran, for absolutely nothing but piling on. Instead of saying something to help rally the masses, you jump on board with this No Talent A$$ Clown and create more havoc. You had an opportunity to do something positive for Georgia football, and you decided to make yourself a lightning rod. Great job.

Reposting from page 2 by request:

(Notice that nowhere do I mention the FACT that Georgia has actually had MORE arrests the last five years than Urban’s Gang in Gainesville, which I should’ve, because to me, the 30-plus arrests in five years is the BIGGEST reason to fire Mark Richt)

You people dismissing Fran Tarkenton out of hand are piss poor Dawgs.

And you are doing EXACTLY what he says people tend to do: YOU’VE IGNORED ALL THE SIGNS.

ANYONE with half a brain could’ve seen that the Japanese were going to attack America in 1941 or 1942. Military advisors warned FDR constantly that his choking off trade with Japan was going to result in attack (which is maybe what FDR wanted anyway) and yet, the Pacific Fleet was NOT kept at alert for attack.

ANYONE could’ve seen the collapse of the housing market. In fact, many people did, bet against the inflated market, and made MILLIONS off the collapse. Of course, because they used common sense, the architects of the disaster, like our dear old president, Obamanation, label these smart people as “vultures.”

The SIGNS have been there that Mark Richt was NOT the right person to lead this program going as far back to 2005.

Remember 2005? That’s when Mark Richt refused to back Brian Van Gorder’s request for a raise, to be fairly compensated as a Broyle’s Award Winner SHOULD be.

But Richt didn’t back BVG, in fact, he betrayed him, so BVG walked.

And instead of bringing back Muschamp, or Kirby Smart (who Richt actually made a RB’s coach for a year, leading Smart to jump ship the first chance he got, if you can believe that bullcrap), he hires a man who had FAILED as a defensive coordinator TWICE in his career… a man who happened to be one of his best friends and former college roommate.

The SIGNS were there all the way back in 2005.

As Fran Tarkenton said, he’s had NFL SCOUTS tell him that Georgia’s players are in piss-poor condition when they come to the NFL.

Ever wonder how a mediocre-to-average corner at Georgia, like Asher Allen, all of a sudden becomes a STARTER at corner in the NFL?

THE SIGNS WERE THERE!!!

So Richt refuses to fire one of his best friends for YEARS after it becomes stupidly apparent that he’s an appalling defensive coordinator. SoftWillie set RECORDS for how BAD he was a defensive coordinator.

No Georgia defense had EVER given up more 30, 40, and 50 point games in a 5 year period as they did under Martinez. It isn’t even CLOSE.

And the ONLY reason why Martinez was fired at all is because Damon Evans DEMANDED it.

And what about John Eason? How many years did we have great wide receiver talent at Georgia who couldn’t CATCH THE DAMN BALL???

If AJ Green were tainted by this horrible coach, he’d be just another disappointing Fred Gibson!

We’ve seen for YEARS that Mark Richt puts his personal relationships (Martinez, Eason, and DVH in particular).

Mark Richt should’ve been FIRED. This isn’t Vince Dooley’s SEC. You morons need to stop comparing him to Dooley.

This is the SEC where LES MILES and GENE CHIZIK know have BCS TITLES!!! And Mark Richt DOES NOT!!!

In Vince’s day there was Bear. That’s it. In Vince’s day, it wasn’t a multi-million dollar, bottom-line business.

Mark Richt is NOT a guy who can turn this around. And by giving him another year, you just make it that much harder to dig out of the hole he’s burried the program in.

You people are morons.

The SIGNS were all there for you. But you ignorant fools refuse to open your EYES.

Will and How long will it take the Auburn title to be stripped?
Why would Les Miles ever return to LSU and leave “MAMA CALLING”?
Who is going to have the gonads to hire Malzahn first?
What recruits are we going to get?
How did Mark Richt keep his job at Georgia?

Is this the same Fran Tarkenton who had all sorts of trouble with unethical business dealings many years ago.

The 2010 dawgs averaged 32.1 points per game . . exactly the same as the 2002 (13-1) season. We had 68 penalties this year compared to 101 that season (108 last year when everyone was moaning about that). Problem has been strength/conditioning and replacing VanGOrder has proved to be a significant challenge. If Crowell and Drew don’t commit . .. that will raise an eyebrow because it signals we have significant PR issues . . . moreso a coach who doesnt know how to win. Those who want Richt fired view him in a bubble. Situation is fluid.

A few salient comments:

1. Four different SEC teams have won the last five BCS championships.

2. UGA was not one of those teams.

3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.

4. During that period, UGA did not even win its SEC division.

In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.

So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?

Instead of flapping your gums and stomping your feet, take a second to really think about this season and what happened.

UGA lost 7 games this year with a freshman QB in the toughest conference in America.

USC – away game, pretty close game lost to future SEC east champ, and Spurrier prepares for this game in January. Even Lord Saban lost to these boys. Maybe Bama should fire him.

ARK – Could’ve won the game but defense gave up too many big plays. Lost to future Sugar Bowl rep from SEC that only lost two SEC games, AL and AU.

MISS ST. – Vastly underrated at the start of the year. Lost to them on the road in a game that was, again, not a blow out. After this loss everyone thought “what’s wrong with UGA?” Now we know that we lost to a pretty good team. They lost to AU by 3 pts.

COLORADO – No excuse here. I know, on the road, fumble with a chance to win, blah, blah, blah. Shouldn’t have been close.

UF – Annual brain fart. Only way to explain it. Also, CMR got out coached and a freshman QB looked like a freshman QB for a game. Tough OT loss but again should have been a W.

AUB – Future SEC and NC. Pulled off onside kick to start 2nd half and momentum never got back in hands of dawgs. Tough fight but tip of the hat to future Nat. Champs. No debating that loss.

UCF – Again, a pretty good team. Close game. Not pretty, but an L. Just like Miss St. people wonder “how can you lose to them?”. Apparently a few people have. We again lost to a pretty good, and underrated team.

I know we have a lot of work to do to fix some issues with the team on and off the field. Just think fans need to put into perspective that, even though we lost 7 games this year, it was not as bad as sports writers like Mark Bradley and Jeff Schultz would have you believe. Fans need to support the coaches and team instead of buying into the gloom and doom of the AJC. Fran isn’t doing his old school any favors by publicly ripping the current coaching staff.

1969:5-5-1, 1970:5-5, 1974:6-6, 1977:5-6, 1979:6-5….not to mention several 7-4 seasons under Vince Dooley. Richt deserves another season to turn this thing around. The changes to the strength and conditioning program WILL toughen up this team. Richt no longer have administrative duties will aid his coaching. The recruiting class coming is solid and should get better with the likes of Rome and Crowell, and hopefully Jenkins, Drew, and Mitchell, but this bashing of the UGA program prior to NSD certainly doesn’t help. Programs will have down years, granted this year was unreasonably down. Look at Texas this past year….yet Mack Brown is having no trouble keeping is job.

This isn’t the first time Sir Francis has thrown his team under the bus. Prior to one of the Vikings’ Super Bowl appearances he made it clear in a pre-game interview that if the Oakland Raiders established a running game, Minnesota would lose. Can you imagine the reaction in the Vikings’ locker room?

Like many UGA fans I am frustrated with the Dawgs performance the last few years. I keep thinking about the plateau the team reached when it destroyed Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl and the downward slide since. We can analyze and complain all we want, but the negative comments won’t help recruiting and could impact players’ motivation. In fact, it’s time to keep a positive focus so the players, coaches and administrators can maintain their drive to alter the course the team is currently on.

Even if a change is made, it will take time to improve the performance of the team. Quite frankly, the turn around at Auburn is somewhat similar to UGA’s SEC championship the second year of CMR’s tenure … without the national title, of course.

I also go back to Bear Bryant’s career at Alabama. The Tide struggled running a pro style attack for several years and fans were getting restless. Bryant installed the wishbone and Alabama went on a great run. Who’s to say that kind of turnaround can’t happen in Athens?

If the problems aren’t corrected next fall, then McGarity will make the decision to change course. It’s too late in the recruiting cycle to make a change, and CMR’s overall record proves he can win.

We have all made our choices on this issue. Many are taking a negative attitude. I’ve taken the positive. For the good of our beloved Dawgs, I honestly believe it’s better to remain positive and let the games on the field make the decision for us.

Do you think recruits are dumb? Every single recruit knows what’s going on @ UGA right now regardless of what Tarkenton says. That’s why you have a recruit like crowell saying he is “worried about the team discipline.” You know you have a problem when an 18 yr old says that. Or you have Dickson when asked if he flipped a coin on UGA vs Bama, “No I didn’t, I couldn’t risk it”

IT DOES NOT matter who the head coach @ uga is. Georgia will always be able to recruit PERIOD When will some of you fans quit being so scared of not getting recruits if we criticize or get a new coach? GOING 6-7 isn’t going to get you that many either

When Mark Richt was the offensive coordinator at Florida State they had the most talent in the country. I watched them constantly lose to Miami not really because of wide right but because Richt would undercoach after they passed the fifty yard line. Im not a coach yet I can call the plays before they run them by the formation that they line up in. If I know what they are running the coaches that study in the winter surely know. Bowden should have won numerous national championships with the talent he had, recent Spurrier commetns attest to that.

Whether you like it or not, Tarkenton has a point with the arrest, and the direction of mentality surrounding the Georgia program. You folks calling him a fool are the fools. You can’t argue statistics, and the legal issues have only increased as the on the field success has decreased. I think Coach should get the benefit of the doubt, seeing as all coaches and teams have down years, but as long as these legal problems occur, there is no room for that, not even for a good Christian man with morals that is getting paid $3 million a year while the rest of the country struggles to find jobs. All of the donations and booster money should not be going to pay for the education of these kids who decide to break the law. They are under a microscope when they sign the dotted line, and accept their $50,000 a year scholarships, plus benefits they receive from Nike, Georgia, and bowl games. They know this, and yet continue to test the boundaries.

I hate losing more than anyone, but I can handle a few losses here and there. But I cannot handle these punk kids and their egos that go out and deface society as they do, and bring negative attention to the program. I’m 26 years old, and was no choir boy, but I also never received compensation like these kids either. The attitudes of these players is ridiculous, and it all starts with the coaches and them getting these kids in line. You never see a Les Miles or Nick Saban team this out of line.

By recover, what do you mean?

I honestly don’t know how all the older DAWG fans feel but the younger ones have friends at these universities that are winning CHAMPIONSHIPS. We want to win championships and contend for SEC championships, NOT RECOVER.

I just don’t understand. You give a coach 10 years. 10!!!!! and in his 10th he goes 6-7. So the reasoning for DAWG fans is hey lets see what he does on 11

Lets see: FL fires ZOOK=championship X2, Bama fires shula=championship, Auburn fires Tubberville=championship

UGA keeps the guy who couldn’t win the championship when the division was filled with those bums and now can’t even contend in its division. You need to understand that with Richt in the NEW SEC we are closer to ole miss and kentucky than to the teams winning the conference

but hey, lets see what he does in year 11.

Hoping that recruits didn’t see us get beat by the mighty powerhouses Colorado and UCF? That we didn’t have 12 arrested? Are you serious? Acting like an ostrich and sticking your head in the sand and hoping all the problems magically go away is not the answer to our problems. CMR talks of change then…….makes none. CMR wants to spend more time studying football? Shouldn’t this be part of the job requirement in the first place? The next three years Oklahoma went 0-3 against Miami, 36-0 against the rest of the world, won 1 NC, payed for a 2nd…and all of a sudden Switzer was a “good” coach again.

It will be $4 million dollars cheaper for UGA to get rid of Richt next year than this year. I hope Richt turns it around.I disagree with Fran, it has been a lot worse. I loved Ray Goff, but I remember going to games in that era and us not being able to compete against the better SEC teams. We competed against Auburn this year, and had a chance to win. I also heard a rumor in Athens over the weekend that Richt was not able to retain some of the past assistant coaches because Damon Evans was very tight on the budget.
