If you haven’t heard what Fran Tarkenton had to say regarding Mark Richt last Friday on 680 The Fan, you probably should. The most famous former Georgia Bulldog (non-Herschel division) eviscerated the Bulldogs’ coach and strongly suggested the program needs a new leader.
Francis T. began boldly — “What has happened over the last week with Georgia has been the most disturbing time I have seen in a long time; you know, people don’t want to look at reality” — and didn’t pause for breath. (A partial transcript is available at SportsRadioInterviews.com.)
Richt’s all-is-well press briefing of Jan. 4 apparently set Tarkenton’s teeth to gnashing. Concerning the announcement that Richt would re-immerse himself in the finer points of football, Tarkenton said this:
“Holy cow! Yesterday, where Mark Richt says, ‘I have been freed from administrative duties to spend more time on football.’ Then I quote him, he said, ‘The moves give [me] more time to study the game of football and be an expert and be on the cutting edge.’ What has he been doing for nine years? I have never heard any college, high school, professional coach [say] that [he] was not able to spend enough time on football.”
Asked by host Christopher Rude if Rich might have been devoting too much time to academics or somesuch, Tarkenton said:
“No, it sounds like a cop-out! It sounds like, ‘I am not taking responsibility. I have other things.’ We hire people to be football coaches. We pay him and others millions of dollars to be football coaches, not to be administrators. He didn’t do a very good job there — we had 12 people arrested this year, including a top-ranked quarterback who was a top kid that is now going to play LSU [Zach Mettenberger], and that has been going on forever.
“[Richt] is a wonderful guy. He is a good Christian guy. He wants to be a missionary. He goes on missions. That is a wonderful thing. But do you know the religion of Nick Saban? Or Gus Malzahn? Or Chip Kelly playing for the national championship? I don’t think we care what their religion [is]. We hire them to be football coaches. If we are hiring religious instructors, let’s go to the Candler School of Theology over here in Decatur and get some of their people to come and coach our football team.”
Let the record note that Tarkenton is himself the son of a preacher. Which isn’t the same as being the son of a diplomat, and is evident throughout this diatribe. More Fran: “You’ve been there nine years [10, actually] and you say [you] haven’t had time to spend on football — if you don’t think that’s a problem, Georgia people, and [athletic director] Greg McGarity, if you don’t think the signs are there, my friend … Bad news does not get better with time.”
Regarding last week’s announcements that two top in-state prospects plan to sign with Alabama and Auburn, Tarkenton said:
” We’re going to lose the elite players this year. We haven’t in the past — we’ve gotten the elite player. We either didn’t choose right or we didn’t coach right, because we didn’t have success.
“Right now our program has had three years of regression, and I don’t see any way this thing is going to get out of the ditch. When I read comments like [Richt's] … we’re putting spin on everything. In the meantime Alabama and Auburn and Tennessee are working and kicking our butts and recruiting people and getting coaches that have spread offenses. I mean, can you imagine? We scored two field goals against Central Florida.”
The son of a preacher then offered a benediction: “I think Greg McGarity has got to look at this awfully hard, I think the signs are that we have a program that is in big trouble.”
And now you’re asking: How noteworthy is this? My answer: Very. It’s one thing for some newspaper guy (like this one) to carp about Richt, quite another for a most distinguished alum to sound the alarm. In the space of nine minutes, Sir Francis essentially said what more and more folks are thinking: That Georgia needs a new coach.

Tarkenton has a reputation to uphold — party guy who has a loose mouth. Wonder if he regretted these comments the next day???

@houston??
Well, then it would be him and Boykin delaying it..honestly, I don’t believe either should go. not just because I’m a Dawg fan but because Houston only blew up this year with the implementation of the 3-4..think about how much more is stock would rise if he stayed one more year. And like CB’s before, it would be best for Boykin to get as big as he can before leaving so he can keep pace with those NFL receivers and play physical at the next level..Tim Jennings is just now becoming a major part of the Bears defense

It’s the culture at UGA. It will take 10 years to change it! It’s not Richt. It’s you, and you, and you, and you….It’s all of you. Don’t you all see what the rest of us see? Trash everywhere, AD’s with DUI’s, players arrested by the dozens, drunks everywhere. Please get rid of Richt, please, please, please…it will set UGA back another 10 years.

Fat Matt STAFFORD is still a HUGE HUGE Question. The Loins played better this year with Matt on the sideline. Calvin didn’t make it to the Pro Bowl because Matt was that good.

Fran is 100% right. I think about all of the other great coaches and how fired up they are during games and how competent they are and how they can make adjustments……….then I think of Richt who has to take Nodoze to stay awake during games because of his lethargy. Letting someone who is “not a good coach” stay another year in hopes that he learns how to be a good coach and magically will turn things around is a bad decision on the part of Adams and McGarity. I don’t understand why they insist on forcing UGA to go through another horrible year before they then make a HC change. What do they think will be gained?? The anwer is nothing.

UGA BugKiller you are right on. Not only that but due to poor planning and recuriting the dogs will not be able to dominate the line of scrimmage because there is nothing in the pipeline.. A freshman will not be able to come in the SEC and be a force. We will be pushed around again next year. CMR will not address problems until they are out of control. i.e. penalties, defense under Willie, arrests, Strenght and conditioning.

Well said UGABugKiller! The SIGNS are all there. Anyone defending Mark Richt right now and not holding him accountable must be related to him. Fran Tarkenton is not just a former athlete, he is one of the all-time greats at Georgia and is an NFL Hall of Famer. His comments are right on the money, and he is just calling it like it is. He’s been a winner all of his life, from leading Athens High to a State Championship against mighty Valdosta and Wright Bazemore to an SEC Championship with Georgia to an NFL great whose records as a QB stood for almost two decades. Any fans not wanting to face reality at this point simply need to get out of the way, you don’t know what you’re talking about. The Dawgs will be back, just not with CMR at the helm.

Instead of calling ADAM-12 UGA needs to declare a State Of Emergency and call in the National Guard and remove the entire coaching staff by force if needed. Or at least call Roto-Rooter and have them come in and pump that septic tank that UGA football coaching has become out. Oh the stink.

THANK YOU. I’m sick and tired of these people making excuse for a guy who has made so many bonehead mistakes. I’ll just add on to what you said
1. Redshirted Knowshon. Do you know we used to have articles in the red and black about a player named knowshon moreno that was jumping over people in practice and no one could contain him but Richt redshirts him
2. Playing Joe T III and Joe Cox. SELF EXPLANATORY.
3. Allowing Bryan Evans to start. SELF EXPLANATORY.
4. 2007 Tennessee and 2008 Alabama.
5. Not winning the sec EAST with 1st rounders @ QB, RB, and WR
6. Recruiting. Yeah RECRUITING. Richt is unable to put a fence around GA bc he fails to get on these kids EARLY. Barely recruiting Greg reid, not recruiting Cam
I’m so SICK of everyone in the neighborhood winning championships while we go 6-7. If that’s not enough to make a change, THEN WHAT IS????

You blame us for losing recruits (nice one, SoCalDawg). You know, instead of blaming our illustrious head coach who can’t beat Florida.
You say we aren’t good Dawgs. Which, you know, is funny, because WE actually want the Dawgs to win SEC and BCS Titles, while YOU want the status quo in Athens.
How’s that worked out for us the last three years?
You people have to be the thickest, dumbest, most ignorant people there are. I’ve had better conversations with devout atheists about religion that I’ve ever had about Georgia football with a blind homer who can’t see the forest for the trees.
You people are AMAZING.
Pollyanna has nothing on you yahoos.
YOU are the kind of people who keep Georgia football down.
Not us. YOU, who embrace mediocrity. YOU who refuse to assign blame where it belongs: with Mark Richt. YOU who refused for YEARS to see the damage SoftWillie did to our defense, both in how poorly he ran it, and then, in how poorly he recruited it.
As Buford T. Justice might say about you sorry sum’b—-es:
YOU people really are the dumbest sum’b—-es around.
There ain’t no way…no WAY…you could’a be Bulldog Fans. When we get home, the first thing I’m gonna do…is punch your Mama in the mouth!

You can tell the UGA Bulldawg Nation is in mourning, confusion, disarray, or just fed up. How?
Because this time 5 months ago this article would have warranted 20 pages of responses.
This speaks very loudly of how the Bulldawg Nation is suffering, asking questions among themselves and many many have thrown in the towel until spring practice is here and some of the questions are answered or maybe NATIONAL Signing Day.

My fellow fans, we need to think back to Frans playing days. He’s a good business man and was an exciting player to watch. However he had his problems with coaches in his career. I know the bulldog program is in need of much improvement. But I hate to see Tarkington jump on the bandwagon and on CMR,s back. Be prepaired if a new coach takes over, its gonna take a few seasons to rebuild under a brand new system. I hope and pray the UGA program gets where it needs to be.

Unfortunately I think Fran’s all too correct. And I was thinking the same thing when I heard Richt’s presser. I think he’s just biding his time and depositing another $3 mil. I don’t think his heart is in it and hasn’t been for at least 3 seasons. Next season will be more of the same, or worse, and we’ll be looking again. I guess it’s just a natural progression, but we are paying these coaches WAY too much. We’ll see how much fire Cheesestick and Sabin have in the next few seasons. And Cheesestick won’t have nearly as big of a payroll now that half of the top *AU Boosters are in prison. Throw a probation on top of that and he’s in a world of hurt. Maybe *AU could hire Kiffin next!

Anytime someone criticizes Richt because he is open about his faith, that person loses all credibility. Fran may be correct with his criticisms of Richt’s coaching, but Richt having his faith a major part of his life has no negative effect on doing his job. So why even bring it up? I guarantee alot of recruits and their families come to UGA because they like Coach Richt’s faith. Kicking a field goal on fourth and one in the bowl game is a coaching mistake. Going to church on Sunday is not. Fran should stop criticising the wrong things. Fran sure nailed that one about it being horrible to start a freshman QB. Oh wait, nevermind he ended up being the rock of the team and one of the best in the SEC.

MJ has never said much about UNC.
What does Hershel have to say? Gomer HERSHEL “I CAN’T HEAR YOU.”
Fran said something when asked. He has never said much about UGA. he has left his High Profile Name and Thoughts out of it.
What does Fat MATT STAFFORD think? H. WARD what do you think about your old school and the Coach?
DJ Shockley what is your input.
Who has the RIGHT to talk BAD about UGA? In the UGA FANS eyes who do you guys think has a RIGHT to Talk Straight about UGA football?
I Know who says the most and never says a WORD in the press. His name is LEEBURN. The married man that is screwing around with Miss. GYM DAWG herself S. Yoculan.
Adams the good christian man(Church of Christ) is so far up LEEBURNS butt it ain’t even funny.

Just one question to those who saw the BCS game last night. What is the difference between what Nick Fairley did last night to James of Oregon and what Brandon Spikes did last year to the UGA running back? Nothing, both backs down in vunerable positions with blows to the head and gouging fingers involved.
Fran is correct

I believed in CMR until this season, but the program is going in the wrong direction on and off the field. He is a good coach, but he needs a fresh start and we do too.

It sounds to me like CMR is the football equivalent of Paul Hewitt and lives on talent. But when certain players leave and you recruit dirtbags or people who need a mentor, this is what you get.

Mark Bradley will seize on anything to advocate for CMR’s dismissal. He even used UGA’s victory over GT to argue that CMR should be fired. It’s as though there isn’t new material to write about.

Never have blamed you for losing a single recruit… I’m sure they could care less what you have to say. I don’t disagree with what Fran said… at all. I do question how smart it is for him to bash the program (and make no mistake he was bashing not just Richt but the whole program during the week or two leading up to national signing day. While I don’t think you nor I have much sway on a recruit Fran on Atl radio just might.

My favorite thing Fran said was that..”We (UGA) out weighed C. Fla by 35 lbs a man on the O line and and we have the best receiver in the nation and we scored 6pts….
somebody please rationalize this fact….(any good litigators) out there..??
