So there I was, shoveling snow and ice off the driveway at stately Brad Manor, and a neighbor walks by with his dog. He says, “Why aren’t you in Phoenix?”
And I, suffering the effects of hypothermia, say, “What’s in Phoenix?”
And he says, “The national championship game.”
I felt slightly silly. (Mostly, though, I just felt cold.) But now, having been briefed by my neighbor, I’m ready to go. We’re going live here, and I’m picking Auburn, and I don’t think the game will be as high-scoring as advertised — few games ever are; remember the Saints beating the Falcons 17-14 two Mondays ago? — and my genius daughter (who takes, obviously, after her mother) has supplied the only reason necessary to root against Auburn.
“Their uniforms,” she said, “look like Army ants.”
And they do. And they’re funded by Nike. And Nike owns the world. As many reservations as I have regarding the Auburn Newtons/Louders, they’re small potatoes — obligatory Auburn agricultural joke — when viewed alongside the megalomaniac Phil Knight. (Who once attended the same Easter Mass as I did at a Final Four. But I digress.)
Here’s my score: The Army of Cam 31, the Army Ants 24. And that would make it five BCS titles in succession won by SEC schools, Georgia not among them. (Obligatory Mark Richt dig.)
And with that, we’re ready to roll. Blog’s open. Time for us to think sunny thoughts about Phoenix (actually Glendale) and watch us some football. I’d be obliged if y’all gather close for warmth. (Although Sonny Clusters should keep a safe distance. I hear he uses venison for body wash.)

Why hate on Auburn’s academics, other than Vandy, all the SEC schools accept marginal students if they can play football

Wow! The jealousy coming out of Athens is amazing! Can’t you even be happy that an SEC won again? I guess since Florida (three times), LSU (two times), Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Alabama (twice) and now Auburn have won national titles since you have it makes it understandable.

Well Auburn wins the NC this year AND they are still as classless as they were yesterday, last year, 10 years ago, etc, etc. AND winning that NC will not bring any class to you- the house of Lowder will always be classless

Hey Malcolm – I will stick with my original text.
TCU or Stanford would have dominated auburn tonite. The play calling by Chip Kelly was terrible. And the still should have won the game.

NOBODYYOUKNOW, yeah, it was a boring game. When the two best offenses in the country get together I expect more then what we saw tonight. The third quarter and most of the fourth quarter was some of the most boring football all season. It took a turnover by Auburn to wake anyone up.

NOBODYYOUKNOW, yeah, it was a boring game. When the two best offenses in the country get together it’s a little disappointing when neither can score. The third and fourth quarters, before the late turnover were almost nap inducing. I’m glad it finished good but man it dragged for a while.

But tonight was Auburn’s night and hats off to them.

SEC MAN : Some say you don’t deviate from what got you there but I agree with you. CCK should have been more flexible. Oregon showed they could gas Auburn’s D in the 1st qtr but give Auburn credit for not letting Oregon keep it coming. Kelly’s ego didn’t allow him to call it to win it…

Malcolm – nobody goes to football stadiums to watch students take a test. Because of their abilities, some students get to go to school on a scholarship to bring recognition & $$ to the University. If you don’t like that, book your trip to the 2011 SPELLING BEE!!! Have a great time! Otherwise, get off a SPORTS BLOG you idiot!
