Live via TV: Cam Newton and Auburn take on the … Ants?

So there I was, shoveling snow and ice off the driveway at stately Brad Manor, and a neighbor walks by with his dog. He says, “Why aren’t you in Phoenix?”

And I, suffering the effects of hypothermia, say, “What’s in Phoenix?”

And he says, “The national championship game.”

I felt slightly silly. (Mostly, though, I just felt cold.) But now, having been briefed by my neighbor, I’m ready to go. We’re going live here, and I’m picking Auburn, and I don’t think the game will be as high-scoring as advertised — few games ever are; remember the Saints beating the Falcons 17-14 two Mondays ago? — and my genius daughter (who takes, obviously, after her mother) has supplied the only reason necessary to root against Auburn.

“Their uniforms,” she said, “look like Army ants.”

And they do. And they’re funded by Nike. And Nike owns the world. As many reservations as I have regarding the Auburn Newtons/Louders, they’re small potatoes — obligatory Auburn agricultural joke — when viewed alongside the megalomaniac Phil Knight. (Who once attended the same Easter Mass as I did at a Final Four. But I digress.)

Here’s my score: The Army of Cam 31, the Army Ants 24. And that would make it five BCS titles in succession won by SEC schools, Georgia not among them. (Obligatory Mark Richt dig.)

And with that, we’re ready to roll. Blog’s open. Time for us to think sunny thoughts about Phoenix (actually Glendale) and watch us some football. I’d be obliged if y’all gather close for warmth. (Although Sonny Clusters should keep a safe distance. I hear he uses venison for body wash.)

It will never stand. Newton will be disqualified when a real investigation is done, all of Auburns wins will be forfeited. This was the very worst officiated game I have ever watched and Auburn the dirtiest team

Not a good game but AU deserved to win – the DL stopped Oregon from getting any kind of running game going. 33 rushes for 81 yards says it all.

I wouldn’t call it anticlimactic. I’d call it uneventful — until the final three minutes.

AU Coach Cheesy forgot to include the best lawyers in the nation during his immediate postgame field interview. And Scam, please save the “God” comments. You ought to be thanking the team of lawyers AU assembled to keep you and pappy out of trouble, thus allowing you and AU to perpetrate this fraud upon the college football world. I suppose when the truth comes out a la Reggie Bush, God will have changed his mind, right?

The only downside to this is college football is over until Boise kicks the thuga nation back to reality, putting an end to next season’s delusions of grandeur. Spurrier will then help you start your season 0-2.

aladawg,

why would alabama fans shut up,or florida fans shut up, or uga fans shut up, everyone has more national titles than Auburn and they got theirs without a black cloud hanging over their programs as Auburn does now and for many many more years.

The auburn football team has more folks who have no business in college and have more qualifications to be in prisons across the south.

Auburn and Oregon were both pretty lousy tonight. It’s a shame that neither could bring their A game on the big stage. I think Cam just lowered his draft status a good bit.

easy, closeted UGA fans:

“The only downside to this is college football is over until Boise kicks the thuga nation back to reality, putting an end to next season’s delusions of grandeur. Spurrier will then help you start your season 0-2″

I mean really, you apparently hate UGA so much that you can’t wait until they start playing next season? Really?

Brent Musburger, please shut the hell up. Quit saying “some how he stayed focused.” Stop the charade. You and the rest of the sports media put your collective heads in the sand regarding the Newton case. Not only are you showing your ignorance, you’re illustrating how much you – the sports media – are part of the problem. Stop acting like you don’t know what happened.

Good game, but that field was a piece of crap. This is the BCS championship and the promoters go with what is pretty instead of putting together a decent piece of grass to play on. That would have been a much better game if the players weren’t sliding all over the place.
