So there I was, shoveling snow and ice off the driveway at stately Brad Manor, and a neighbor walks by with his dog. He says, “Why aren’t you in Phoenix?”
And I, suffering the effects of hypothermia, say, “What’s in Phoenix?”
And he says, “The national championship game.”
I felt slightly silly. (Mostly, though, I just felt cold.) But now, having been briefed by my neighbor, I’m ready to go. We’re going live here, and I’m picking Auburn, and I don’t think the game will be as high-scoring as advertised — few games ever are; remember the Saints beating the Falcons 17-14 two Mondays ago? — and my genius daughter (who takes, obviously, after her mother) has supplied the only reason necessary to root against Auburn.
“Their uniforms,” she said, “look like Army ants.”
And they do. And they’re funded by Nike. And Nike owns the world. As many reservations as I have regarding the Auburn Newtons/Louders, they’re small potatoes — obligatory Auburn agricultural joke — when viewed alongside the megalomaniac Phil Knight. (Who once attended the same Easter Mass as I did at a Final Four. But I digress.)
Here’s my score: The Army of Cam 31, the Army Ants 24. And that would make it five BCS titles in succession won by SEC schools, Georgia not among them. (Obligatory Mark Richt dig.)
And with that, we’re ready to roll. Blog’s open. Time for us to think sunny thoughts about Phoenix (actually Glendale) and watch us some football. I’d be obliged if y’all gather close for warmth. (Although Sonny Clusters should keep a safe distance. I hear he uses venison for body wash.)

OK, the reunion of the servicemen with their families was very cool.
If they were really into providing this for soldiers and their families, they could have done it without putting it on national tv.

If anyone still cares from previous posts, they were the Phoenix Cardinals when they moved from St. Louis in 1988. Six years later in 1994 owner Bill Bidwell changed the team name to Arizona Cardinals. Speaking of Bidwell, he came very close to moving the Cardinals from St. Louis to Atlanta in 1965, but the deal fell through and the late Rankin Smith was granted a new NFL franchise, the Falcons. Also, the University of Phoenix is the largest university in the world—- but with 90% of its students earning their degrees totally online. A little trivia during halftime.

“The knee has made up my mind. I’m a SEC fan, but I’ll be rooting for the Duck tonight. Auburn has no class.”
Nice decision there, Sally. I’m sure that as opposed to Auburn, Oregon is just loaded with class.

Two of the biggest names in college football, like it or not. They have the Hardware. I don’t think the country wants to hear what Joker Phillips and Mark Richt have to say.

@Buford T. Pusser: the diploma mill is a “for-profit university”— in other words, it’s a business—and they bought the naming rights to the new stadium when it was built outside Phoenix.

They had a Master commercial showing Phil getting the Jacket but you know they wanted the pic to be TIGER. No, At the hospital Mom was admitted this morning. This is from Schultz blog this morning.
Good Morning Atlanta. Stayed up too late but still got no sleep. At the Hospital and just waiting for some tests to be run and results to come back so we can talk to the Doctors.
Love me or Hate me, but please Pray for my mom. She passed out/ fainted in the bathroom last night. Dad couldn’t push hte door open with her laying against it. She finally came too. He got her in bed and called me and 911. emergency got to the house and I was not far behind. We put mom on a TARP and slid her down the driveway in the snow. She did giggle that she hadn’t been snow sleding in probably 50 yrs, but this is not the way she wanted to do it at her age. Mom ia at Northside. Please Pray for my mom. The new Chemo has been really rough on her.
Thanks for you prayers
