Gerald Robinson and Trey Thompkins: Some darn good Dawgs. (AJC photo by Jason Getz)
ATHENS – We might have seen the eventual SEC champion here Saturday, and that team mightn’t be the one you’d think. The Georgia Bulldogs looked snooty Kentucky in the eye and weren’t overly impressed by what they saw. The Bulldogs, see, have reason to believe they’re the class of this league, and this result did nothing to dissuade them.
Said Trey Thompkins, surely the SEC’s best player: “We expect to play with teams like Kentucky and Tennessee and Florida. … We feel like we can play with anybody.”
Georgia beat Kentucky 77-70, and it was no home-court fluke. Georgia was the better side for 35 of the 40 minutes. It built an early lead, saw it disappear not long after halftime and then rebuilt it. It was just as Mark Fox, the canny Georgia coach, said it would be.
Here’s what Fox said he told his Bulldogs, who led by 11 at halftime: “[That] we were mature enough to play 40 minutes, mature enough to withstand the run we knew they were going to make. We’re an older team now, and we should be able to finish this type of game.”
And there’s the key reason — one of two key reasons, actually — that Georgia has a chance to serious damage: The Bulldogs are seasoned in a way most big-time college teams aren’t. They start a senior and four juniors. Most of these guys suffered through the final days of Dennis Felton and have found in Fox the man who could maximize their potential.
It’s also clear, in the cold light of hindsight, that Felton’s final recruiting class was his best: Thompkins was in it, and so were Travis Leslie and Dustin Ware. Thing was, Felton’s grind-it-out style would never have showcased their talents. Georgia needed a tactician for that, and Damon Evans, then Georgia’s athletic director, found a Fox for his Hounds.
This correspondent trashed the Fox hire, and this correspondent was as wrong as he has ever been on anything. (Which is saying something.) Fox can sketch X’s and O’s with anybody, and Saturday he outdrew the head Wildcat. John Calipari’s methodology is to recruit one-and-dones and let them freelance off his dribble-drive offense. Fox runs Tex Winter’s old triangle — most know it as Phil Jackson’s triangle — and in this team he has the requisite three sides.
Georgia got the ball where it wanted more often Saturday and found better shots. (It made 44.9 percent of its shots to Kentucky’s 38 percent.) It fed Thompkins early — he had 14 points in 17 first-half minutes — and allowed its guards to shoot when Calipari switched to a zone to keep Thompkins from setting some sort of record. But come the game’s biggest possession, Georgia up five inside the final three minutes, guess where the ball went?
Thompkins on the right baseline. Thompkins turning for a half-hook. Thompkins making it a seven-point game.
Fox: “It was a called play and a big basket. We were going to him, and he made a player-of-the-year-type play.”
Some coaches outsmart themselves by eschewing their main man for fear of a defense overload. Fox sees it more simply: When you’ve got the best player on the floor, you get him the ball.
Thompkins: “He drew up the play. He’s a mastermind.”
Does the play have a name? Said Thompkins, smiling: “It does, but I can’t tell you.”
Whenever Kentucky comes to town, there’s going to be top-shelf talent on display. What was revelatory Saturday was that Georgia had just as many good players as the big-ticket Big Blue. Asked if this was an upset, Leslie said: “Not really. I knew had the tools to compete.”
Asked what he thought after he had watched tape of Kentucky: “I didn’t think we’d be totally outclassed.”
This team won’t be outclassed by anyone it sees. It has the players, it has the blend, and it darn sure has a coach. Georgia could/should be in the SEC East chase until the last dog dies, and don’t be surprised if the last dog standing is a Bulldog.

Great win for the Dawgs. Now, I hope that the local talent and the talent all over can see how great of a coach Mark Fox is. I know it is early in the season but, the Dawgs look really good right now. We still have to work on holding onto leads but, it looks like we are finally on the right path to success. UGA needs to lock Coach Fox into a long term contract to keep him in place. With a couple of great recruting classes, we can be competing for a SEC title and a NC. GREAT JOB COACH FOX!!!!!!!

Remarkable, it pains me to say this as a GT alumnus, but you are correct. GT basketball is in BIG trouble, and we’ll have to pay 7+ million to get out of it.
There is no way UGA or GT should ever struggle in basketball. There’s too much talent in this state. Both our programs could be powerhouses on the talent in this state alone….just like in football. I’ve always thought that UGA b-ball is a sleeping giant because it’s academic requirements are not as hard at GT’s, and it has more academic selection than GT. Hopefully, both programs will benefit from all the talent that develops in this state one day.

Let’s not go too overboard just yet. This was a big win, but GA matches up well man to man with KY, probably will match up well with them again in 3 weeks unless Cal teaches the Cats to play zone…Let’s see how well we match up against teams like Vandy and Tennessee who are a little older and who rely on execution a little more and and rely on athleticism a little less. Hopefully UT will play us more like they did in their loss to Oakland than their wins against Nova and Pitt…

Mark, you are a very good writer. That’s why I like reading your columns. However, you’re rarely right about anything. When UGA was searching for a coach, you and everyone else thought they should go for the coach Bama got. I wasn’t that impressed with his offense at VCU. You trashed the Fox hire and I wondered why. He was an unknown, but a had a good resume. I had a gut feeling he was a good hire. When you and others trashed the hire, that automatically put me in Fox’s corner, because I knew none of you knew what you were talking about even if you all turned out to be right. Fox has turned out better than I thought he would. A great hire.

@ Todd grantham your right UGA can’t rely on free throw shooting like that. UGA shot 34 free throws to UK’s 16. UK won’t win a game when Lamb fouls out? Wrong UK won’t win any games when Terrance Jones get in foul trouble. UK will struggle every game if they get in foul trouble without any depth. Jones was in foul trouble all game and still had 24pts only playing 23 mins. Not so sure Fox out coached Calipari even though Fox is really good coach. UK missed 6 free throws, shot 6 of 20 on 3’s. If UK hits a few more free throws and another 3 pointer or two drops it’s a different story. Plus any team that shoots 18 more free throws than the other team when the rebounds and turnover margins were close like they were you should win. Can’t really give Fox credit for out coaching Calipari in this victory.
Mark Bradley yeah yeah we know you are a UK grad but we know you are a louisville fan.

After being at Florida, McGarity has seen that you can have a successful football and basketball program. He saw a lot of money going to keep Billy Donovan, so I’m sure he will pony up the cash to keep Coach Fox if he needs to.

Great game today in Athens…the atmosphere was electric and the team hunkered down to pull away at the end. To me, the keys to the game were free throws and turnovers. At 88%, we definitely came through from the line. The turnovers in the second half allowed UK to get back in the game. The close games played up to this point gave the team confidence to prevail. UGA has one of the best basketball coaches in the SEC. The best in the State. Yet Coiach Fox has a problem at UGA this is his problem. this is why the seeding needs to be based on record. some moron on the ajc wrote that seattle’s win puts an end to reseeding. huh? the opposite is true. what need to happen is seattle should have been the home team for winning their division but the 6th seed based on record. cause record is what it’s all about. then they would be coming here. the bears likely just got an easy out. never thought i’d be rooting for vick and philly.

Kentucky is not as great a team, because it is so young. They also do not have as much depth on their team as we do.
Darius Miller is not a good shooter. He can make free throws; and that is about it.
DeAndre Liggins would not start for Mark Fox. Mark Fox would not even recruit DeAndre Liggins.
That those guys both start for John Calipari instead of Doron Lamb tells you all you need to know about John Calipari.

Now, there is a difference between the 2 men’s basketball teams. A Cow Palace in the School of Agriculture is not what Mark Fox should have to play in. We need a gym with twice that seating. We have held back both our men’s and women’s basketball, unwilling as Damon Evans was to spend money he didn’t have. Pardon me, there is something called a 30-year loan. A mortgage. A loan. This entire nation lives on that dream.
Mark Fox has recruited very well. He has a ton of talent.
Terrence Jones doesn’t shoot free throws well and he doesn’t shoot 3-point shots well. But, his real issues also include that he has fouled way too much and John Calipari has done nothing about it all season long.
Josh Harrellson is gangly and awkward. The only area of his game that is great is rebounding position and free throw shooting.
Brandon Knight is a fine basketball player.
7-Deep, Mark Fox has recruited us better basketball players. He also has kept them here, having them buy into his system. He has taught these players how to play as a team. He has taught them each skills they will use the rest of their lives. He is a proven men’s basketball coach who is a far better coach in his game, than Mark Richt is in his. Mark Fox’s program is better off than Mark Richt’s as well.
He has better players and they are better coached.
Trey Thompkins is a great basketball player out of Lithonia, who in his 3rd year here, has become a better shooter every year.

As Jeff Schult wrote, Fox has changed the psychology in the UGA basketball program. That’s a big and necessay first step. Felton is a good guy, but by the time his last season was ending, “the psychology” was dismal. Fox and his coaches and players deserve a lot of credit.
According to the TV announcers, there were plenty of potential recruits at the game–I hope so. The state of GA produces plenty of top basketball talent. There’s reason to believe, with this changed atmosphere, that more of them will choose to stay home. And since I’m that rare bird who likes to see GT do well also–I went to UGA; my father went to GT–I’d like to see the 2 schools sweep up the state’s best talent.
Note: Luke Wynn over on Sports Illustrated’s site just put out an article on the game and UGA basketball.

Pretty good win for UGA. Seems they took advantage of the lack of experience at UK. Giving up 24 personal fouls, 34 free throws, and having 3 guys foul out isn’t going to get it done against anyone. Calipari has his work cut out for him. The timing of this game was kind of bad though. UGA beats Kentucky. At the same time the NFL playoffs are on and UConn was in overtime against Texas. I’m not sure anybody even saw the UGA game.

@kral, yeah, it’s a pretty good win. UK isn’t exactly world beaters this year. They lost to a mediocre UNC team and have looked lost a few times. They are a young team without a dominant star like John Wall. They will get better and better as the year goes along but right now they are a little overrated. It’s not really a stunner that UGA beat them. They have the ability to lose to teams they shouldn’t and beat teams they shouldn’t. Its going to be a roller coaster season for them.

You need to study up on how things work. Players from both schools only have to meet NCAA minimum entrance requirements. It’s like that across the entire country. Yes, a great win. And way to go Mark by manning up to your mistaken evaluation of the Fox hire. I’m sure you weren’t the only one doubting it.
Yes, a great win. BUT, it’s only one win and the first SEC game of the season. There’s plenty o’ BB yet to be played. We’ll have a better idea in a couple weeks; several SEC games in that time span. But, yes, it appears Fox has this team ready to compete with anyone. Don’t forget also that he has 5 guys playing 90% of the minutes.
Any mention of a NC is absurd. Making it through the SEC tournament is the first goal. Then making the NCAA tourney is next. A ’sweet sixteen’ would be glorious. Don’t put the chicken before the cart just yet.
Any talk of losing Fox is a little premature also. No doubt he’ll get an extension; he’s pretty much turned the program around.
Yes, a big win. Now, let’s get ready for #22 Vandy on Wednesday night.

Let’s don’t get too carried away just yet. Georgia still has a long way to go but it does look like they have turned a corner and are improving. They are 12 and 2 but could have very easily have lost to some lesser teams this year had things not gone just the right way. Calipari teams seem to always lose to a lesser opponent every year and this was probably that game for them this year. Remember SCarolina beat them last year when they were ranked #1.

There must be some scientific terminology for it. When more energy goes into a operation than the operation produces. Both Georgia football and Tech basketball are eaten up with this. The Georgia basketball program is the opposite. It mainly recruits in Georgia, competes for oxygen with a extravagant football program and in the end is a formula for other schools to follow. I think the fact that Thompkins might walk through the Georgia campus unnoticed since he is not a football player and he is about as humble as I have ever seen a kid may be two places to start looking for the reason of success. Lattimore the football player at South Carolina has some of these same wonderful characteristics. We all could learn from these young men. Great coaches in all sports look for that, I don’t think Fox is lucky, I think he is very good. Bobby Knight use to send em home by the bus loads but the ones that stayed were winners, same with Bear down in Alabama. Gary Patterson at TCU is a modern day version of these coaches.

UGA and its fans are a strong basketball school. It was excited with the Final Four team. It got behind Tubby, big-time, and rallied around the team. And it even got excited with he-who-shall-not-be-named, before he destroyed our program through the NCAA. This is a football state and UGA is a football school, BUT it is also a basketball state and a basketball school. It really is. UGA can do what may schools can’t – get behind both programs.
Mark Fox is the man. We need to keep him and, if we do, he will grow this program (and this job) in to one of the nation’s best. This team is awesome, and it will go far. I want UGA and the other schools in conference to be good year in and year out. Don’t get me wrong I don’t like the dawgs at all. It is better if the SEC as a whole is better in basketball. I like it when we are the heavy favorites to win the SEC but also like when the SEC has a bunch of good teams like this year.
UK is going to struggle every game we get in foul trouble. We have no depth. UGA should of won the game yesterday when the free throw shooting attempts were so lop sided and the rebounding and turnover margins were similar for both teams. UGA shot 18 more free throw than UK. No I am not blaming the refs stats are stats. The East is going to be tough this year for us all.

I understand Dan Radakovich has to spout all the clichéd vote of confidence crap, I just hope he doesn’t believe any of it. He couldn’t possibly look at his basketball program and think it is any good…could he?

The remodeled coliseum was rocking yesterday. I know Mark Richt was there with some football recruits. I hope some basketball recruits were there to soak in UGA fans do for winning teams. The place was truely electric last night.
Go Dawgs !
UGA needs to up Fox’s pay ! He is a keeper.

What was that stupid video I saw at Stegman about the Texas Western Game ..Isn’t Georgia racist enough without that crap…How about showing your EX AD sniffing those panties in his BMW after the DUI arrest..Now that would be “real” classy! You folks are a piece of work..

Just a word of warning…let Fox recruit his own talent first, then see the product. AND, don’t sign Fox to a contract like Hewitt’s. GT will be stuck with him a long time unless someone comes up with $7 mil. I guess that’s his game plan…do poorly enough to be fired, then he can stay in ATL and keep his wife and family happy and not even have to work.

I think the two keys were drawing fouls on UK and then MAKING 18-22. I don’t know how you can overlook that Mark.

I am just so proud not only for the effort of the Dawgs, but also their appearance on the court. I saw what Auburn and Tenn look like and I be dang if I could pull for that. Nothing but a bunch of playground individuals. Thugs! UGA is a good sign that discipline still matters and is the foundation of a solid program.

Great win in the Fox Den. Do what we need to do to keep him around. Just like football, the state offers great B-ball talent. He could build quite a program.

UGA is a team on the rise until players Fox’s inherited jump ship for the NBA. Fox is still not recruiting at a level necessary to keep this program at the top of the SEC. Lets see where we are at two years down the line before anointing Fox the next Coach K.

Cancel the season! No need to play anymore games this season! Georgia just won the SEC East! Your Big Blue hatred is showing again Mark. How about saving this article for the end of the season. GA wins the East and then I’ll start to believe

I love this. When Fox was hired at UGA he said when anyone was talking about Mark the coach everyone knew there was only one Mark (Richt of course) I see it now, shortly when people talk about Mark the coach at UGA its going to be MARK FOX. I can see it now, Richt is probably in a fetal position on the couch saying, “What is this guy trying to do to me, he is trying to make me look bad”. Richt alibis and makes excuses while Fox walks the talk Hmmmm, I wonder if he could coach football?

Coach Fox deserves to be getting a lot more credit than he is getting. We spend so much time explaining what Coach R is going to do next year, that we forget what Coach Fox is doing this year. Any great highschool player in Georgia should want to go to Athens to play.

You hillbillys are about to be taken over. You will no longer be king of the SEC, the DAWGS will. The last thing you want is for UGA to be strong in basketball with all our instate talent and your having to buy players nationally and internationally. This is where you END and where the DAWGS BEGIN. Deal with it hillbillys! RuuF!

Mark–disagree about Kentucky being “snooty”, but Georgia looked like a well-coached team in their defeat of the Wildcats.
Kudos for correctly crediting Tex Winter as the guru of the triangle offense.

Freethrow shooting has been UGA’s downfall for a number of years. The game against Kentucky we shot freethrows better than I’ve ever seen a UGA team. The confidence gained from that game should pass on to other games. UGA shoots over 70% from the charity stripe in the future games then you will see some banners hanging in Athens! Great job Hoops Dawgs!!!

Curious–Is there any real, verifiable proof that the academic requirements (to get in and stay in and graduate) for athletes at Tech are tougher than those for Georgia athletes?
