A double whammy: Two touted Georgians spurn the Bulldogs

Xzavier Dickson dealt a blow to the Bulldogs by choosing Bama. (AJC photo by Jason Getz)

Say what you will about the unseemly process of football recruiting, but the young men at the heart of it are expert trend-spotters. They know which program is Hot and which is Not Hot. On Wednesday two ballyhooed Georgians used the Under Armour All-America Game as the venue to announce they’d be making runs for the border, and there you have it.

The Georgia Bulldogs = Not Hot.

Xzavier Dickson of Griffin is bound for  Alabama. Quan Bray of LaGrange is taking his talents to Auburn. According to ESPN.com, both rank among the nation’s 25 best prospects. We should also mention that ESPN.com has Georgia’s 2011 recruiting class rated No. 8 nationally. We should also mention that Rivals.com has the Bulldogs 23rd, while Scout.com puts them 20th.

Yes, rankings can and will change. (And yes, recruits have been known to reconsider. Ask Da’Rick Rogers, currently enrolled at Georgia … er, Tennessee.) But seeing Georgia ranked outside anyone’s top 10 always constitutes a shock. Rivals rated the Bulldogs’ signing class among the 10 best every year from 2002 to 2009; last year the Bulldogs were 15th according to Rivals, 21st according to Scout, 12th according to ESPN.

Even in lesser seasons on the field, Georgia under Mark Richt has always been able to point to its recruiting. Now, with lesser seasons running together, the program that controlled its state controls it no more. The buzz about this program has been downgraded to a murmur, and the murmur concerns the future of its head coach. Which  grows more tenuous by the moment.

Four SEC schools have qualified for the BCS title game since 2005, Georgia not among them. Seven league members have qualified for the SEC championship game since 2005, Georgia not among them. This program of vast resources has been rendered second-rate.

The Bulldogs lost 19 times in Richt’s first 95 games as coach; they’ve lost 15 times over the past 35. Recruits know this better than anyone. Recruits can sense a program on the descent, even if it’s the flagship school in their state. Thus does the cycle of football spin onward: Win and you’re the place to be; stop winning and you’re the place to flee.

This isn’t to say Georgia can’t and won’t land an uncommitted player or two to bolster this class — Jay Rome of Valdosta and Isaiah Crowell of Columbus are still in play — but Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald offers this nugget: The Bulldogs’ last known public commitment was rendered on Aug. 22.

Put another way,  not one recruit has been moved to pledge himself to the Bulldogs since the football season began. Talk about Not Hot.

Now Mark, really, if you were Dixon would you go to a school where the head coach is going to get fired after another bad season or a school that is a perrineal BCS contender and its heir apparent head coach is already on staff?

And if you’re Bray would you go to the school that’s probably going to win the national championship or the school that gave UCF its first ever bowl victory?

The logic seems clear.

UGA can still get a top 10 class if they get Swann,Rome, Crowell and Drew.

The LB commit to MSU, Johnson just de-committed because Manny Diaz is going to Texas.

Mark,
Starting to look like the 90’s again, with the Jamal Lewis, Cosey Coleman, types all leaving the state. Richt and his staff have gotten fat and lazy. How many times do we continue to hear recruits say “UGA hasn’t offered me” or we read UGA is on a kid too late. I’m tired of seeing Georgia kids “showing out” for out of state teams. Mark Richt’s downward spiral continues. He hires the wrong assistants and takes too long to replace them. He’s let the team become out of shape for the last 3 years. He’s 2-8 vs Georgia’s biggest rival (why this is acceptable to ANY Bulldog fan I will NEVER understand!) Now UGA can’t even attract the best talent in their own state. Remember all this next year those who still want Richt. Start the campaign for DAN MULLEN NOW!!

I thought it said a lot about the situation at Georgia when Xzavier Dickson responded to the reporter that he “couldn’t take a chance on a coin flip”.On Tuesday he said it would come down to a coin flip between Alabama and Georgia but that was apparently just to make news.He could have always gone 2 out of 3 if Georgia had come up first and made a bigger mockery of the situation.

I can’t blame them… Alabama I totally understand. It seems that program had a slight stumble this year but is still poised to contend and win the West for years to come. However, Auburn surprises me. From my standpoint, AU is completely one dimensional. Its all Cam, all the time. If he got hurt or had lost his eligibility this year, there is no way Auburn is in the NCG. No one team they played this year could stop HIM. When he leaves for the draft (this year, I bet), the Tigers will be hurting. So I wonder what Bray sees as the upside of AU? Again, as much as I love my Dawgs, I don’t see much that would make a recruit want to come to UGA with the way we have been trending…

Outside of AJ, our biggest recruits have turned out to be less than stellar…Marlon Brown, Ealey, CALEB KING, etc. Maybe a few kids who feel like they have something to prove and who would be honored to put on that jersey, rather than feel entitled to it…are just what the program needs.

Despite what the dwindling set of blind homers and Buck Belue types think, you can’t put lipstick on a pig and expect everyone to think it’s anything but a pig. Poor coaching and on-field performance over the last 3 seasons coupled with a dreadful and embarrassing showing at the Liberty Bowl has turned the majority of Dawg fans and most potential recruits against the CEO MR regime. Fan reaction to the press conference and the lack of commits from the UA game last night bear this out. Stating that Searels and Bobo did “great jobs” last year shows just how delusional CEO MR has become. Most fans and potential recruits aren’t buying this or any other “lipstick” spin.
CEO MR’s record this coming season is irrelevant. We’ve rapidly gotten to the point where all faith has been lost and a head coaching change is the ONLY real solution that will change player’s and fan’s attitudes . Perception is reality. The SEC is full of recent examples of where change was extremely positive. Shula, Tuberville, Nutt, and Croom were replaced with terrific results in a very short time. Likewise, look at how the Cowboy’s players reacted to the replacement of Wade Phillips. CEO MR’s rearrangement of the Titanic’s deck chairs is just going to keep us in the death spiral of bad performance impacting recruiting which impacts performance which impacts recruiting.

McGarity must have some spoken or unspoken hurdles for Richt to clear in order to keep his job now, not later. The bowl game and game prep and team attitude was one such goal. Failed that test. Murray and his Batman gloves are the ugly memory of that debacle.

Next, is recruiting ……………..if Richt fails that test and ends up scrambling in Feb. to sign some kids that are just local players as fill ins ………….. that too would be another Mark Richt failure. Remember, in 2009 the frosh class was substandard and ranked about 17th.

Maybe the UGA administrators ( Adams and McGarity ) are waiting to see what kind of class UGA ends up with. Knowing now that it too is becoming a giant failure and what that portends for the future ( two years out ) they go ahead and fire him in Feb.

The reasons for canning Richt and his staff now are obvious. A new coach can come in and evaluate the squad ( Batman gloves must go ) and move the program forward NOW by rebuilding bridges in Georgia H Schools and start recruiting hard for 202 and beyond.

The Boise State game would be the target of a new staff and they could scheme in spring camp and the G Day game and come August, be ready and MOTIVATED. The team should be re energized then, as they now feel the pressure mounting on the coaches.

Fire Richt now. These things continue to unravel before they get better and it is looking bad for CMR and his losing staff. They had their shots and failed.

The only way to stop the bleeding in recruiting is to extend CMR contract. The programs are killing UGA in the parents home due to the programs downturn over 3 years and the upswing of other local schools. Hell, the coaches can pringt out the blogs and read the recruits our comments and tell the recruits that once the masses turn it will not be long before CMR is gone. It is all in the angles these recruiters are taking and it is killing CMR and staff.

McGarity had 3 options

1) Extend Richt

2) Fire Richt, and sacrifice 1 recruiting season

3) Keep Richt almost in a lameduck status and if 2011 goes sideways he will have sacrificed 2 recruiting seasons.

Meh, yeh it sucks to see GA players (that UGA wants) go out of state. But this is a spin job to make it sound worse than it is. UGA will have a fantastic recruiting class. These guys were just small pieces of the larger puzzle.

Mark, I understand the pressure on the entire newspaper industry right now. But, the gross mischaracterizations in this article do a grave disservice to the young men and the universities involved, as well as yourself. You imply a cause and effect here with no support whatsoever. Instead of this being a case of two young people accepting offers from the schools where they felt most comfortable, you decided to assume causality and make UGA “wrong” or “lacking.” I don’t get the impression you lack journalistic ability, so sadly that leads me to suspect you chose to spin the story this way to drive reader interest (and fuel the mindless rhetoric) and harvest web page hits. You were in a position to ask each of these guys their thoughts on the current environment at UGA and whether/how that related to their decisions. That would be the obvious first question (journalism 101). Or, was that a question you really didn’t want to know the answer to? You might have learned the truth was less news worthy. Take a look in the mirror, please.

This program is a train wreck right now. Richt has NO answers, we are and have been getting recruited out of our socks. Bama, Auburn, FL , Tenn and now even SC are coming into GA and hand picking recruits.

Richt’s press conference was a joke. No substance, no meat, just more of the same ol same ol. “We’ve got to do a better job.”

I guess when you’ve got to do a better job at EVERYTHING then it’s just easier to say a better job period.

So in order for UGA to get the ship back on course CMR & co. have to do a better job at:

1. Recruiting
2. Preparing the team to show up for games
3. Coaching our players and developing them
4. Making adjustments mid-game
5. Motivating the team to play a full 4 qtrs
6. Improving their overall strength and conditioning
7. Making the best use of talent and getting players in the best situation to succeed
8. More creative playcalling
9. More accountability among the coaches-quit blaming the players for “lack of execution”
10. Did I mention recruiting?

Did I miss anything?

Now if we’re sitting here after 10yrs and THOSE are the things that need to be addressed, then one has to ask the question what has been going on with the program? CMR is the steward of the football program and for us to have those issues smacks of a lack of accountability, focus and drive. What are the so-called “admistrative duties” that have had him bogged down?

I think the Dawg Nation deserves some answers and when I say answers I mean SPECIFICS on WHAT has been the problem(s) EXACTLY, WHEN can we expect to see changes, HOW are these changes going to implemented, and WHO EXACTLY will be both RESPONSIBLE AND ACCOUNTABLE for SPECIFIC items.

I’m in a sales position and I can assure you if I go into my boss’ office and said, “Yeah, I know I need to close some business, I gotta make more calls, I gotta do a better job of getting people to say yes.”

And if he then asked me “What are you going to do to get there?” and I replied: “I’m just going to do a better job.” I can’t think of too many organizations mine included that wouldn’t bounce my butt out on the street. I can assure you I wouldn’t be blogging if my business wasn’t squared away.

CMR’s business hasn’t been squared away for quite sometime. Not sure why, not sure if he’s having some internal conflict about whether he wants to coach or preach, but he needs to get off the fence and choose one path or the other.

They do one thing well, play football. The media has discovered that there is enough idiots out there to buy papers to see if which of these is coming to save their program. So you hype them up. Their high school coaches pimp them. The colleges take them in and don’t give a crap about preparing them for life. Then those who don’t make the NFL it’s good luck, see ya. That is the same for all of us after college but fortunately most of us were better prepared by our families to deal with it. The NFL takes the few, where everybody “GETS PAID” only to have 85% of them to leave bankrupt and broken bodies. No one is looking after the interest of these kids. Not the media, their absent fathers, the high school coaches, the NCAA, the NFL, the old friends and the wheel keeps on rolling. Keep putting up those Glamour Shot photos and keep cashing in.

If you let your vehicle go to pot the wheels will eventually come off. Thus, the story at GA. It use to run good but the owner(s) got complacent and didn’t take care of it and all of a sudden it runs like crap. What to do? Costs a lot to repair it and seems like no one is coming around to buy it even though you’re telling them all the parts are great. Then, the owners give up but one day a young guy that knows a lot about cars takes the car over and low and behold repairs it puts a fresh coat of paint on it and everyone in the neighborhood suddenly wants a ride and offers to buy it come pouring in.

Moral of the story. There’s always someone else out there that can do a better job maintaining their vehicle and retain that wow factor.

And I love reading you, I really enjoy reading all you guys but look here, you go to the games, you cant see the ants on the sidelines? You get 60 players and 17 are ants? Let me ask, now that they are 6-7 does it matter that their dads played earlier? I do not think CMR is the answer, but this legacy thing needs to stop and it is something that I see is wrong, and I just wonder why you cant report it. Greg McGarity needs to fire Mark Richt today. Why waste another year. There is no way that UGA will win 9 games or more next year. But with that said I guess 7-6 is an improvement.

Do any of you recruiting experts know the story on DeVaris Daniels? He played in the Under Armour game last night. He is a 4 star 6′ 3″ WR who signed with Notre Dame. His Dad, Philip Daniels, played for UGA and is a current NFL player. The GREAT offensive coaches at UGA ignored him. Why?

Can’t say I blame the kid for going to Bama. I’m sure Saban got on the phone and said “Richt is a nice man but that program is undisciplined and does not turn it’s recruits into NFL material”. At Bama we do that, now don’t make a foolish mistake by flipping a coin”. And I bet Mark never called the young man. Now, on the notion of all these 5 star recruits, they really haven’t panned out to be much but self entitled misdemeanor cases. Go get a bunch of Terry Hoage type players that are just dying for a shot and coach them up.

I can’t say that I’m surprised about Dickson. He didn’t seem to have UGA 100% during his whole recruitment. I didn’t pay attention to Bray that much.

I’ve got a feeling that Crowley will come to UGA. I don’t have any evidence or proof. Just a gut feeling. I mean, why sit on the bench at Bama when you can start at UGA? But I guess we’ll see.

As for recruiting in general, I don’t get too caught up in stars and such. as people mentioned, Pollack and Greene (David) were no more than three stars, and Knowshon was only a three-star, if I recall correctly. So I think you should go out and get kids that really wanna play for UGA (like Stafford, who really wanted to play for Richt). If you get one or two of these ego-inflated kids, I guess that’s ok, too. But don’t rely on them to carry the team.

Though I do have a question for Mr. Bradley, if these young men “spruned” the Dawgs, then why were the Dawgs even in their final two? Spurning them would mean UGA didn’t make it to their final ten choices. So a more accurate headline would be, “Two Touted Georgians don’t choose UGA, spurn Tech.”

These blogs by Bradley and Shultz are getting really pathetic, though Shultz is actually a little more level-headed about things right now (surprisingly). We get it, Bradley. You want Richt to get fired so recruiting will suffer for several years in order to Tech to actually beat UGA more than once a decade. It’s getting old.

As for Richt, I love what he’s done for the program and think he deserves next year to try and fix things. If he does, fantastic. If not, then I think we can split ways in a reasonable manner. I think he’d retire before he lets UGA suffer three or more sub-par seasons, and no, 2008 was not a sub-par season.

If UGA does release Richt after next year (or he retires), the only person I think that could come in and be immediately effective would be Chris Peterson of Boise State. Other than that, who are you gonna get? And don’t give me Kirby Smart. The man hasn’t proved he can coach anything. That’s Saban’s defense in Tuscaloosa. And don’t give me the “unknown coach” schtick, either. That’s a cop-out non-answer.

I think it’s kind of a moot point since I think the Dawgs are gonna come back hard next year. But we’ll see. Go Dawgs!

Hey Richt, Your get worse by the year subpar seasons, coupled with this recruiting class, which is probably gonna be loaded with non physical, finesse, anemic, underperforming, troblemakers is not looking like you deserve to be around by next year’s end. It’s telling that the kids don’t want to join Georgia and quite understandable. On the good side for Georgia, they have never been known to do anything with all their top ranked recruits anyway. So, I don’t see how this is really a negative for them. Especially when it comes with recruits whose names are spelled phonetically. Maybe Richt will finally have to wake up and be forced to coach up the kids he gets. I am astounded he is even still there in the first place with all the $ Georgia brings in. The problem is larger than Richt. Georgia has had maybe five good years since 1980, and most of those were under Richt.

And this record just doesn’t make sense:

- Top five high school football talent in the US.
- Practically unlimited resources spent on its football program.
- Located in a great college town and fun place to go to school.
- One of the best football stadiums anywhere to play a game in.
- Rabid, loyal fan base.

Georgia has been the most underachieving program in the nation sense 1980.

I’m with EW, he nailed it. I do not want a guy on my team just because of a coin toss. He has no inner conviction and will most likely flunk out. You can’t worry about those people. Get the good athletes to come here that have fire in their bellies. There is a very good d-back playing now for the Falcons that went to S.Carolina because he was not thought good enough to be recruited by Ga. Remember the brothers that came in this year, one was not recruited by d-1 schools but is already playing at fullback. David Pollack was not a high recruit, I could go on all day but you get my point. Coach up the ones that want to wear the Ga. jersey with pride. I do believe something is wrong with the offencive line that needs attention and I knew this last year with the line we had then. By the third game of this year I was broken hearted and ready to fire Stacy Searels who should have been demoted last year.I am sure there is a good former pro offence line coach out there who would love some stability at a place that pays good like Georgia.

The only good news here is that Georgia is but a decision to stop accepting mediocrity from being one of the two elite schools in the SEC. It’s a bigger state than Alabama, it’s a better school than Auburn or Alabama, the state of Georgia has over three times the economic power of Alabama and there are far and away more division I talent in Georgia than in Alabama. 95% of those kids will want to go to Georgia if you give them a reason to. You have to be a pretty colossel screw up as a coach to be this bad. Why would they go to Georgia right now? The current managament is terrible and the fanbase is ill and disgusted with the whole process. It’s not suprising that these kids wouldn’t go to UGA. It has little to do with Auburn or Alabama. Get a top flight coach and it doesn’t matter what FL, AL, AU, TN, or LSU does.

The Bowl game left most on this board in shock, coming off our season. There is no doubt the program is in decline, coaching suspect and talent also. My fear, And everyone else, is that there is not the talent, depth or coaching talent to fix this NEXT YEAR. Therefore, The clock has run out and for fear of a pure revolt worse than now, They ( Adams/McGarity) will have no choice put to remove him, and I think so even if he wins 8 games with losses to Boise,SC,AU and probably MSU. What we need is a bunch of kids that want to work hard and get better. Our secondary coach came from Conneticut and coached a couple players into the NFL draft. I think Grantham can do the same. That is what VanGorder brought to the table.

We need a ‘Rudy’ type kid or two. Our whole team is made up of ‘Jamie O’hara’s’ to keep the ‘Rudy’ analogy going. (And Yes Andy…the dumbed down ‘Rudy’ analogy was in deference to you.)

Good day.

So is it safe to say GT may be more appealing to in-state talent now?

News reports say UGA has offered 2 star (and 0 star) WR Sanford Seay. He want bail on us. He doesn’t have another legitimate offer. Hope he is better than the recruiting services think. But, I’m sure our GREAT offensive coaches can recognize talent and what it takes to get back to respectability. If the reports are true, I wish Seay great success.

Last time I checked Georgia and Georgia Tech both finished with 6-7 records. Georgia was coming off a rough 8-5 year, while Georgia Tech went 8-3, won the ACC championship and played in the Orange Bowl. Why is it that Mark Richt now is such a horrible coach and Paul “The Greatest Coach Who Ever Lived” Johnson has no coaching peers? The answer is Mark Bradley, Furman “Mr. Georgia Tech” and other moronic writers continue to praise a guy who has never consistently won above the Division I-AA or service academy levels. Bradley should really stick to college basketball. Being from Kentucky, that’s the only sporting topic he knows even the slightest about.

As a UGA graduate, I am in utter dispair about the state of the football program. The sliding records are bad enough. Throw in the Florida State off the field antics, and it’s not a good time to be a Bulldog.

Georgia would be much better off signing the high character players of the past such as Pollack, Greene, D.J. Shockley. Shockley was highly rated and turned out to be a shining star on and off the field. Pollack and Greene were barely on the radar screen as far as national recruits but proved to be among the 10 greatest Bulldogs ever on the field and never caused problems off it.

Bradley do me a favor. Please just once write about how Paul Johnson has dropped the Georgia Tech program down a notch in only three years. At least Chan Gailey never had a losing season.

Mark Richt is a class act as a person and always friendly and upbeat. Signing the wrong type kid and loyalty to underachieving assistants are two major flaws that he needs to work on.

Paul Johnson is a sour individual who has a problem with anybody who correctly doubts his flawed offense and increasingly obvious lack of coaching ability.

Bottom line is Richt may not be a great coach according to Bradley but he is 9-1 against Georgia Tech and 2-1 (should be 3-0 if not for blowing the 2008 game) against the great Johnson. Tech will never consistently beat Georiga – they haven’t done it since the 50s – as long as Johnson is coach. Hopefully they’ll keep him there for a long time to come. What else would Bradley have to write about if he ever left?

Mark – interesting blog today. It does send a clear signal when top recruits move out of state.

I did see Bray play in person this year against Carrollton. He was not spectacular at all against a team that is not sending a single defensive player to a top tier Division I recruit. I had the same impression of Richard Samuals a couple of years ago and wasn’t surprised that he was not a top running back. He was an excellent, excellent linebacker so I hope he excels there next year.

On a positive note, folks won’t be able to claim that Georgia gets the top recruits and doesn’t coach them up anymore which has been a knock on CMR for years!

We already have a 175 lb running back that can barely get beyond
the line of scrimmage, and there’s a lot of talk about the Griffin player
not having much of a chance to be Rhodes scholar. You can’t really
blame these youngsters for going elsewhere, particularly with the AJC’s
journalistic “support” given regularly. On the assumption that they read
these editorials, it’s hard to blame them.
You will know in 5 years how these recruits worked out. For proof,
go to Scout.com, then work backwards and see how many 4 & 5 star
recruits failed to pan out at all of the schools, not just UGA. Take a
look at several schools such as TCU and Boise State who get few, if
any of these top tier athletes, but are coached up & become a strong
cohesive unit by an excellent coaching staff. The only team effort I
consistently saw in Athens in 2010 was the sideline version of NCAA’s
“Dancing with the Stars”.
Let’s worry about the UGA coaching staff doing their job and improve
the team next year beyond this beyond sub-par performance of 2010.

Even if these 17 year olds chose to leave the state, the fans (me included) understand what the numbers say and what the “trends” really are. 1 loss to Auburn does not make a trend. 4 wins out of the last five….thats a trend.

@ronald,

The “trend” that you’re referring to has to include the present otherwise it wouldn’t be a trend, correct? And the “present” is much more pertinent to a recruit than what happened 2 or 3 or more years ago. Why? Because the recruits will not be joining the team from two years ago, they will be joining this year’s team minus the graduations and early NFL draftees.

UGA is not having difficulties in recruiting THIS year because of what happened in 1980 with the Dawgs or what happened 5 years ago. Even a casual football fan can see the obvious trend at UGA in wins/losses and it is a significantly downward trend.

We have one fellow dawgs, we are just not as fiscally reponsible as the the hated tigers. We should sit out 2 seasons, save money, and step up our cheating. That is the only way out of this mess.

Going 6-7 and losing to UCF has less to do with it than the direction the program is and has been heading. Texas didn’t even qualify for a bowl and they still have the number 1 class and the pick of whoever they want in the state. If this could be considered a “rebuilding year” and nothing more then it wouldn’t have affected recruiting.

Give it a rest, Mark. This is not a 2009-2010 development here.

1) UGA has not managed to lock down the absolute top talents in this state since 2004. They usually dominate the top 15, but not the top 5. Tray Blackmon, James Davis, Eric Berry, Cam Newton, Jonathan Dwyer, Morgan Burnett, Omar Hunter, Greg Reid, Jarvis Jones, Da’Rick Rogers, Markeith Ambles…all top impact players from the state that have gone elsewhere since 2005.

2) Recruiting rankings are greatly affected by how many players you recruit. The Dawgs only have 15 commits right now. Most teams ahead of them have 19-25. Last year, UGA signed a smaller class as well (19). Every team ahead of them signed at least 20. Auburn? 32. In fact, UGA was top 10 last year until Rogers switched to UT who was sitting just outside the top 10. That basically switched UT and UGA. UT got Rogers because they also offered his 1 star QB buddy which neither Lane Kiffin or UGA were willing to do.

Did you forget back in August 2010, Bradley wrote another article stating the puppies have a cupcake schedule and should win 10 or 11 games?

All Bradley doing is stating the obvious now and that is 2010 was a pathetic excuse for a losing season, Richt has one foot out the door, UCF embarrassed UGA and quality recruits would rather go out of state than play at UGA.

A pattern at UGA w/ Richt

January 6th, 2011
2:03 pm

Generally, over his era, Richt signs some real good to great offense players. We know who they are now and who they were and what they did or did not accomplish.

My issue with Richt for several years now is that UGA does not go after big, tough, bad attitude linemen for both sides of the ball. Once in a blue moon he will get a so called 4 or 5 star O linemen like Sturdivant. Boling, coming in was unranked but he did develop mainly, because Boling has a competitive heart and he is fairly tough. Note the play on words? Boling has made AA honors as a frosh and later on. He, unlike 80% of the UGA linemen will be missed by the alums. Tyson?? Jones, Lott? Anderson, Gathers? They as a group are simply awful and are too weak to play in this league. Here lies the problem for UGA. THIS area is why we are losing games to go 6-7. Awful.

The D side of the line of scrimmage is awful and this is R Garner’s responsibility. UGA is physically weak and not very deep, on the D line. TG is very concerned about this.

The line of scrimmage in HS or Pee Wee ball or in the SEC is where it matters. UGA could win their share of games, 80-%- 85%-95% of the time going forward, had we developed our lines of scrimmage with beefy, bad a–ed linemen. These two areas are huge failures.

For this reaosn alone, heads at UGA should roll. This is not that tough to discern gang.

Too little and too late for me. Change must take place right now. Problem is that UGA cannot afford to let them go. Too much $$ to do that so we sit for another ugly, dismal year. UGA will be about the same or due to a horrible 2011 team attitude ………………worse.

Past 2 seasons, 14-12.

Mediocre results on the field = mediocre recruiting.

Don’t believe it?

Watch MSU’s recruiting this season vs ours.

According to Scout.com, they 1 spot behind in overall rankings, but have 13 three-star commitments vs our six.

Mullen went to the Swamp and beat UF, now he’s reaping the benefits.

Richt lost to Colorado, UCF, and 10 other teams in ‘09 and ‘10, and now he’s reaping what he’s sown.

How did these guys get out of high school? They can barely put one word in front of the other. Preferential treatment for athletes has got to stop! It now starts in elementary school, then onto middle school and then to high school. What kind of statements are the school systems sending to these “players.” Play sports and pass while others slave with making good enough grades in hopes of maybe, maybe, making it into a college or university? I would like to see the GPA’s or ACT/SAT scores for Dickson, Bray and others. Makes me sad for the futures of these kids.

WDE said “UGA is not having difficulties in recruiting THIS year because of what happened in 1980 with the Dawgs or what happened 5 years ago”

WDE- My post said nothing about 1980. I pointed out that UGA has won 4 out of the last 5 against Auburn, which IS clearly a trend when examining the life of this rivalry. 4 wins for Richt out of the last 5 against Auburn is from 2006 – 2010. I don’t know why you’re bringing up 1980. But for you to act like Auburn winning 1 game since ‘06 is somehow a trend, that is simply ridiculous. Richt has always owned Auburn, whether you like it or not.

Well, you can’t blame Georgia for not trying as far as gimmicks go. First they had the blackouts then the black helmets versus UF in 2009. This year they tried the “Dream Team” gimmick. I’m sure nothing fires up recruiting than an early-90’s era slogan.

What’s next, is Georgia going to paint the grass red? Perhaps black?

Mark are you trying to be sensational? This article is overblown, and unduly negative. So two kids picked schools other than UGA. The same can be said about Alabama and Auburn for the 15 or so kids that have picked UGA. I just wonder what your agenda is, as I can’t believe this continued slanted journalism drives readership. Maybe I am wrong. Paper sales are down; so perhaps this is what passes for journalism these days.

I only hope that you be held to the same standard that you have asked Mark Richt be held to this coming season. If you fail to win whatever award is annually handed out for excellence in sports journalism that you be shown the door by the editors of the AJC. After all, that is what you have suggested for Mark Richt.

KGB- over the past 6 years OU, Texas, Fla, Bama (since Saban has been there) UGA, FSU, LSU, Notre Dame, Miami, USC and Ohio St. have averaged a top 11 class. Out of those 11 schools only 3 have failed to finish the year with a top 10 ranking (if you aren’t in the top 10 aren’t relevant in the national picture). That would be FSU, Miami, and Notre Dame. UGA has 1. The rest of the above named schools have multiple top 10 finishes in that time frame.

What that tells me is that we waste a heckuva lot of talent each year. Hell we are top 3 or 4 as far as players in the NFL. WTF? The talent is there.

Not landing some top recruits isn’t necessarily bad. Consider that UGA has had a top ten class for years but that talent sometimes never appears on the field. The problem is that some of these top recruits are already near the top of their game and just don’t get that much better in college. UGA has had many of them in recent years. The dawgs need more underrated players that will continue to develop for 4 more years. Maybe having a less than average class is a good thing in the long run.

Just saw where Luck is staying at Stanford. I think that in a nutshell tells it all. You guys are all hyped about what 5 star guy is going here and what 4 star guy is going there. UGA has been getting as many 4 star and 5 star guys as anyone but look where they are now. Its all about character not how many stars you have attached to your name by some recruiting geeks somewhere. Luck wants to earn his degree before moving on to the NFL. AJ and Houston and some of the others have been counting the days until the draft for some time now. Don’t tell me AJ didn’t know he couldn’t sell his jersey, he didn’t care. Richt and his staff have been listening to the recruiting boys too much instead of hunting for real players. How many 4 or 5 star guys have been letdowns in recent years. Everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon and blame the coaching staff for not coaching them up but the real blame on the coaching staff is for not finding real football players not just real athletes, there is a big and important difference. Just check out TCU or Stanford. Tell me that undersized, slow linebacker that swatted down the 4th down pass would have even been considered for a scholarship at UGA! He is a football player, not an athelete. The best football player in recent years at UGA was Rennie Curran. How did he slip in over there?

Yo Dawgs!
Did you see the news today where the NFL 1st round draft choice QB Andrew Luck from Stanford elected to stay for his senior year? Have you wondered why that doesn’t happen at the UGA? Well, the answer is Mark Richt’s absolute derelection of duty in the leadership and culture department. This buffoon by not actively encouraging these players to stay and get their degrees, just shruggs his shoulders. If the players aren’t asked, they surely won’t stay. The culture doesn’t put any worth on finishing out your college years and getting the degree. As a result, each recruiting class has to replace the best players in addition to normal senior attrition.
This is just another data point on the graph of why RICHT NEEDS TO GET FIRED YESTERDAY, NOT TOMORROW. Our players and our fan base and alumni deserve a coach with passion, brains, and active leadership ability. Richt has none of these traits. His only asset is his alleged righteousness, but evidently this hasn’t rubbed off on his players because Richt gets the NCAA Blue Ribbon among ALL Division 1 universities with his 12 player arrests this year (2:1 ratio of arrests to wins).

You finally found something that you know less about than coaching and that would be recruiting rankings. If you took the time to do any research, you would know that UGA still has a good chance of finishing in the top 5 if they land Rome, Crowell, Swann, Mitchell, Pagan among others. They are in the final two for each of these guys. So what if they haven’t had a commitment in months. The most highly rated players typically wait longer to commit, but don’t let facts get in your way when you’re on your anti-Richt roll. After looking at the photo on the top of this page, it does not look like UGA is at a huge loss by not bagging this kid, unless he is hiding 30 lbs somewhere. As for Bray – if you heard his interview when he picked AU last night, it would be embarrassing to have him – if he could get in. At AU, this will not be a problem.

Now losing Crowell would be a blow – that kid is good. Real Good.

Bray lives in LaGrange and was an Auburn lock for some time now. Dickson prefers to play the traditional 4-3 defense where he lines up in a 3 point stance. He has no desire to play in a 3-4 as a stand up outside linebacker. Not making excuses for CMR, just presenting some facts to Bradley’s hit piece. Has there ever been a year when we got every player in the state of GA that we wanted? Not to my knowledge.

Delbert, Preacha Man deserves everything he is receiving time 100. Actually, times 30 million as that is how much money he has fleeced from the USA while tearing our program down to Pop Warner level.

You seem to be mighty judgmental. Did Mr Obama deputize you as the local PC cop:?

On the Andrew Luck issue, look: There are a lot more important things in life than money, even for inner city disadvantaged kids who got a chance for college through athleticism. The college life, playing for the Red and Black in Athens, getting a college degree…. I agree with Mastercard–these things are priceless. I doubt if being some Pimp in a Black SUV with big earrings hanging out with Ray Lewis in the bars really helps any of these kids toward self actualization in life. The UGA takes insurance out on players in case they are injured. The NFL will be there after they graduate, and when their short NFL lifespan is over and they get their knee and hip replacements and start studdering from Parkinson’s , what they will rely on is that diploma and pride from their college days on the UGA football team. Problem is, Mark Richt is ruining this pride because he is derelect across the range of his responsibilities. The AD, the Prez, and all the Defenders are also derelect and are coenablers to UGA’s woes…

Who cares about recruiting? We’ve had a top 10 class the last 10 years and it never made any difference. Our OL prior to the season was ranked #1 by Collegefootballnews.com who also ranked UGA #3 preseason – talk about a train wreck. You people make it sound like we don’t have talent. We do, just can’t do anything with it. I don’t blame these kids for going somewhere where they will be coached up and have success. I watched last night, Crowell couldn’t carry Lattimore’s jock. Good article MB. Spurrier was right when he asked about UGA “where were all those recruits today” after yet another butt kicking by the gators. You people act as if we don’t have the players. Are you kidding me? We’ve had top 10 recruiting classes the last 10 years! Collegefootballnews.com ranked our OL #1 and team #3 preseason. We have at least 3 NFLer’s on the OL – what happened? If I had a son who was a 4-5 star player, I wouldn’t send him to UGA to get coached down. I’d rather see him go to AL, or AU, or FL where he”ll improve and get ready for the next level. Sorry to say, recruiting has little to do with our problems. And I watched Crowell last night and he couldn’t carry Lattimores Jstrap. If we’re hanging our future on this kid, then Vandy has nothing to worry about.

Most of you on here have never seen these two guys play – you do not know if they are good or not -you base your opinion of a 5 star ranking system – as said earlier most of these over rated kids do not pan out – they think they will be stars as soon as they get to college and they can handle the fact that they are just another person trying to make the team and every one is as good or better than they are – too many of you knock on your team weather it be GA or GA Tech or any other team based on this years performance – I am sure right not these guys choose AU or AL based on the fact they think winning a NC is everything and they think AU or AL will win it all next year – many of them forget that no team stays on top forever – I also like how all the AU fans get on here and run their mouth about how great AU is – I do beleive this is the 1st year out of the last 5 that AU has beat GA and when your one man team is gone it will be back to normal for AU – and too many of you get your panties wet over what schools these kids choose – there are many good team out their that have never had a top so called 20 recruiting class – also if you notice a recruit can be a 1 star and then rivals will rank them higher b/c power house schools start recruiting them – so can anyone tell me how many 5 star o-line men that XD went up against?

Hire Charlie Strong

January 6th, 2011
8:24 pm

Charlie Strong interviewed for a slew of jobs before he ever got to Louisville, and always in the same role as the token minority candidate who trekked to a job, interviewed well, and was then passed over for the job in favor of the guy the school wanted from the jump. It clearly wore on Strong personally, especially as assistants he worked with and entered the profession with got their first and sometimes second shots at head coaching jobs. (Meyer and Dan Mullen were both on the same staff with Strong at Notre Dame under Bob Davie, and Meyer was on his third job and Mullen on his first before Strong got hired as a head coach.)

It is all Staffords fault. Fatt Matt should have stayed for his Sr. year. Fatt Matt probably would still have been #1 because Bradford went #1 and only played like 4 or 5 games his Sr. year. No bluechipper wants to go thru rebuilding at the SEC level. They are searching for teams that will showcase their skills, more primetime tv, more wins and championships. To be a #1 draft pick is to hit the lottery. These kids see blood in the water at UGA and choose to not go there.

This is not NEWS! Dickson was always going to Alabama since his Junior year – anyone that follows recruiting knows this – the coin flip was just a ploy for attention – Bray was commited to AU – UGA gets its share…

Years ago at my office we had a manager who was incompetent and was constantly making mistakes with everything he touched. I finally went to the big boss and laid it out and said the guy needs to be fired. The reaction from this wimp of a boss was “But he is a hard worker. He stays late every day and is always the last one to leave”. My response back was “Yeh, and the later he stays and the more he works on, the more things he screws up”.

Somehow I feel the same way now about McGarity’s avoidance of taking the real steps that are needed to fix the problems at UGA. Richt cannot fix the problems because he is the problem. The longer he is left in the job, the worse things will get.

A great head coach has to be able to see reality and see where their program ranks. Richt can’t seem to do that. A head coach has to be able to objectively evaluate talent of the coaches on his staff. Richt doesn’t seem to be able to do that. A head coach must be able to evaulate talent of high school kids and recruit the right ones. Richt doesn’t seem to be able to do that. A head coach needs to be able to coach up and improve the skills of the players he does recruit. Richt and his coaching staff don’t seem to be able to do that. A head coach needs to have passion for his team and be able to fire up his players. Richt doesn’t seem to know how to do that as he seems totally emotionless. A head coach needs to be able to assure that the scheme of offensive and defensive plays called in the game aren’t stale and predictable. Richt can’t seem to do that. A head coach has to have the ability to assess and see what steps need to be done and not take corrective measures only after all of the fans (who figured it out a long time before him) demanded it so loudly that he felt like he had to so something. On and on and on………..

This is not a big story. It simply means that two high school players chose to not go to Athens and play on a team of undisciplined goons and jerks for coaches who are clueless idiots.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking three years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida or another team will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

Ok, we get it Bradley and Shultz!

Ok, we get it Bradley and Shultz. You guys don’t like Richt and want to see him get fired even though neither of you have the guts to call for it. Are you going to write an article every time a UGA target signs with someone else? The piling on is beginning to have a very juvenile feel to it. BOTH of you guys wrote articles at the end of the season talking about how Mark Richt should be allowed to have another year and now we have an almost daily barrage of articles from you guys saying he can’t do it. If that was your opinion then you should have written it then. Your petty vendetta against Richt is starting to look real pathetic.

I agree with the above poster @ 9:12 AM. How many times can you write the same article? It’s been clear since the Colorado game in early October that 2011 is going to be a make-or-break year for Mark Richt. Why we need these daily manifestos on Mark Richt’s job security is beyond me. I think everyone’s figured it out by now that his situation is tenuous, so let’s just wait and see what happens next year.

ugahedges, I’d stop with the “state betrayal” nonsense. UGA can only sign so many players, and keep in mind kids choose schools based on THEIR needs and wants, not yours or anybody else in this state. Georgia is a fine school. My daughter goes there and is in the redcoat band! But its not the right fit for everybody.

Mark Bradley – when the Dawgs win the SEC East next year, you owe a big apology to Mark Richt. Don’t know what he did to set you off so badly, but your treatment of him has been unacceptable. If his coaching was 1/2 as bad as your sports writing, then maybe he should go. But clearly, he has a long way to go to be at the depths of your incompetency. Go away.

All you hear from Athens is about recruiting and next year, year after year, after year…..

Actually UGA has won 5 National Championships to Techs 4. That is if we counted them the same way,

FBi is continuing to build massive files on Scam and his pastor daddy. Once they build the CRIMINAL CASE ( not NCAA’s jursidiction) they will announce it. Heads will roll at AU and then, the NCAA comes back in to interpet their Bureau’s criminal findings. Dog race tracks, thugs and college football players do not mix. For clarification see Pete Rose.

AU will be put on double secret triple probation and will not have a football team until 2015.

Thus players that stinkys go others teams and Dawgs get good players that play with SEC speed. Cromwell is real deal and coming to Dawgs unlike Dickenson and Bray that weren’t good enough SEC talents to be part of Dawg nation dominants.

Now our weak a$$ coaching staff is getting blown away in the recruiting battle.
AD is set on keeping Richt for 2011 season. Maybe after we get stomped by BSU Richt will be shown the door. At least we will have the rest of the 2011 season to search for a great coach.

Coach Richt don’t need to see the door. Adams is problem from choking recruits with pointy header rules that Bammer, Awful Burn, Gaytors, excetera don’t have. Coach Richt is Christian and shouldnt be disrespected when he lead us to dominants but Adams stopping him. Once Coach Richt is let recruiting like rest of league then we get the talent stockpile from Hargrabes for winning. With talents we take over SEC and win BCS by unloading whooping can on all coming againts us. We should be table running for couple years if Adams opens recruiting. Then Coach Richt Christain attract SEC talent players that wants expose themselves to NFL with moms that demand teaching kids to walk in Lords path.

It really is sad when you go from the top to being a team that the SEC needs to pad the others football schedule by our inability to score and defend. Heck we can not even manage to keep our players out of jail its becoming more than a shake of the head and hoping for a better season. I must respond to misguided apologists. Losses are part of sports. They happen. I have been sports enthusiast/reporter for half a century. Please bear with me. Mark Richt can no longer motivate players. This has never been more evident than over the last two seasons. The true downward spiral began prior to Oklahoma State disaster. Opponent disrespected Bulldogs by stating victory by outrageous margin. Any decent head coach would have been able to motivate team out of its head. Unmotivated Bulldogs of MR embarrassed themselves in Oklahoma. That embarrassment has stretched over the last two seasons at least. Know when Bulldogs actually played like Bulldogs all of us know and love? Think about it. Against Hawaii. Seems like centuries ago. If MR wants to be another Billy Graham I wish him nothing but the best. I want a Bear Bryant at Bulldog football helm not an evangelist. Bulldogs now win close against untalented teams but get blown out by upper echelon squads. Okay for a technical school or junior college but not for a proud institution like the one in Athens. There is no optimism in Bulldog Nation any more. Fans, whether they admit it or not, do not EXPECT the Bulldogs to win. I certainly do not. Tennessee Tech. Probably. Vandy. Maybe. Any upper tier SEC team. Forget it. This should be unacceptable to those in charge in Athens. It is not. That is what frustrates me more than anything else. Stick with the status quo. For more defeats like ones to Colorado and (insert team here). Truly sad. STENDEK

When we started the season with 4 losses and everyone started calling for CMR’s head I said that the 2 that needed to go were S & C Coach Van and Recruiting Coordinator Garner. We’ll the 1st one has come true, now if CMR will pull the trigger on Garner he can turn this thing around. Garner is the one responsible for identifying and gaining commitments from football players. What he has been bringing in is a strong recruiting class for the Athens Clarke Adult Detention Center. Enough!

CMR hit the recruiting trail and go find men of character who want to be Bulldogs, not just “players” who are looking for the best route to the NFL. We don’t need players who are going to toss a coin to decide who they will play for; chances are they’ll be flipping a coin about whether to stay or go pro, whether to go to class or not, whether to commit the crime or not, or whether or not to give 100% everytime they strap on the headgear!

The other coach that MUST go is OL/ Running Game Coord Stacey Searles. He did less with more talent that any coach in the SEC. Preseason the OL was considered a strength, what they looked like against UCF was a mediocre HS line.

And while you still have the pen in your hand, signing Dowtin’s dismissal add Caleb to that list and free the team of that cancer.
