11:40 am December 29, 2010, by Mark Bradley

Another New Year's resolution, sure to be broken.
I have a problem. (Many problems, but let’s stick to one.) I’m terrible at taking time off. I never use my entire vacation allotment, and the past two years I’ve hit December having taken exactly one week off in the calendar year.
So I wind up trying to play catch-up ball. Or catch-up rest. I took a week off earlier this month, and I’m sitting out until Jan. 3, 2011. (Which means I’ll miss the Chick-fil-A Bowl, which I’m sure is fine with the folks who run the thing. They hate me.) But I wanted to take this final opportunity to say thanks.
This dumb little blog keeps growing: From 1.976 million page views in 2008 to to 6.8 million last year to 8.954 million so far in 2010. Every time I think we’ve topped out, y’all prove me wrong. And for that I’m hugely grateful to one and all, even the 8.953 million of you who’ve called me an idiot.
Because I pretty much am an idiot. But my New Year’s resolution is to be a rested idiot, so I won’t be posting again until Monday. I’m going into hibernation for a few days. But I plan to return, sillier than ever, and I hope you’ll look me up in Twenty Eleven.
The AJC sports columnist is a blogging fool. But you knew that already

Rest up Mark and thanks again for ignoring the egg I laid in Shreveport and in posting a losing season. Oh well, at least you still recognize that no other coach can match wits with yours truly. I am the smartest guy in the room, as you have said before. As you and I know, what is truly important is making good copy and churning out smarmy quotes in the pressers, winning is optional.
Thanks again for all of your support and Happy New Year!

Mark,
I enjoy your blogs as they usually make me think. I am relieved that with you off until the 3rd of January, all of the moronic, immature, and idiot bloggers from both UGA and Tech will have one less blog to spew their hateful messages on. Do these people understand how bad their silly blogs reflect on their Universities? Probably not, though some may and continue to post just to feel important. I will msii your comments until January 3rd, but not theirs. Enjoy your time off.

Mark-
You wrote the best UGA article this year.
It was something to the effect of “If Aaron Murray’s better than expected, why is Georgia 5-6?” or something like that.
It made me realize I had been measuring the wrong stuff with Murray:
Pass efficiency
Td/Int
Then I dug into his numbers, and realized the kid really was playing all year like redshirt freshman, he was accurate against unranked teams, pretty inaccurate against ranked teams, in pressure situations like 3rd down, 4th quarter & red zone, etc.
Made me realize why everybody pre-season had Georgia doing bad because of inperienced Murray.
They were all right, I was wrong.
Your article, the best of the year, made me get to that.
Murray was ranked in accuracy 75th or worse in:
1) red zone
2) 3rd downs
3) 1st quarter
4) 4th quarter
5) 3rd and 10 yards+
6) against ranked teams
You have a way of getting to the heart of the issue.
So thanks.

Mark, the only thing you will miss about the Chick-Fil-A Bowl is the free Chick-Fil-A sandwich they give out to the reporters. The final score is a done deal—FSU wins easily. For some reason unknown, Spurrier can’t get his teams up to play in bowl games—check the results of the last few of them. Jimbo (coach-in-waiting) Fisher won’t have to be looking across the field at a Frank Beamer coached team this time, and get to claim a moral victory in a last-second score (after calling 3 timeouts) to bring his team to within 2 touchdowns.

As usual, MB is the biggest hypcrite in Atlanta sports. All we heard for a year and 1/2 was how smart the genius at GT was. Let assume CMR was 0-3 in bowls, loses 7 games in his third year and was 1-2 against GT. Would he have managed to keep the genius tag given to CPJ? You and JS have conveniently given GT football a pass this week but I guess you will do a vacation blog on the UGA program if they loses Friday.

I love you too man! Seriously, there are blog postscripts to most every journalist from the AJC to Yahoo to ESPN but the reason yours has grown exponentially is you genuinely enjoy the give and take with all of us fanatic yahoos and it comes across. You can tell 99% of the other journalists have accepted it as a requirement of modern technology and comes with the job but they don’t embrace this portion of the job like you do.
I’ve looked forward to reading your column first since I was a kid. You have quite a gift for writing and rational thinking. I still get such a kick and wonder what must go through your mind when you have the audacity to pick against someone’s favorite team and they let you have it for your obvious repeated bias….best wishes for the new year.

Do us a favor and don’t come back.
Until you relaize you are not as smart as Cam Newton, or as quick as Vick…or even as literate as one of the above (pick one – you’re in 3rd place either way).
Being wrong is part of the process as they actually pay you to make predictions – sometimes. Even Jean Dixon got a few wrong. It isn’t that you are wrong so much.
What irks most of us is your holier-than-thou side-taking and demonizing athletes without any facts to back up your repugnant and usually incorrect typo-filled printed opinions. If the hubris label could be applied to one with so little real talent, it might fit. As it is, it’s just pathetic…or on a good day, laughable.
As I’ve advised before, walk down the hall and have a long talk with Furman Bisher before it’s too late. For either of you.
Too late to save you’re integrity. Too late to get to a true MAN OF WORDS before he succombs.

4:56 pm
Mark: I promise to continue to be your Booster in 2011.
At first, I thought about making this promise conditional
with a couple of caveats. Now I have decided taht it is almost unconditional except:
I cannot agree or support your opinions about the
coaching capabilites of CMR or CPJ. The reason is that you
go from praising to severe criticism one game to the next.
I do not believe that a coach can be great in a game he wins or terrible when he loses the next game. He is ultimately responsible for all decisions win or lose and his ability to make good or bad ones does not change from one game to the next one.
Note I said his “ability” does not change. He makes good and bad calls in all games. If your opinion is that they
are great or good coaches this is fine. If you think they should be replaced say so and let it be.
Meanwhile have a good rest and Happy Hew year.

As a Tech alumnus and die hard fan, I find it very satisfying that the Georgia fans, whom have for SO LONG claimed Tech is insignificant to them, on here bashing Tech and bragging. That makes us relevant again. That was step 1 of the post-David Braine era in GT athletics. Why does Tech need to pass more? That makes no sense. We did not lose to AF because of a bad passing game, we didn’t lose to UGA because of a poor passing game, we didn’t lose to VT because of a bad passing game. One common reason for all those losses: turnovers. Another reason Tech had a horrible year, horrendous special teams. I fully expect CPJ to fix both those problems. The future on the flats is mighty bright. A very, very nice recruit class coming in, another year under Groh, and a great schedule next year.

Overall, a pretty good sports column/blog. I am not surprised that you draw a lot of interest. I certainly enjoy reading your column. The only really big goof this year, in my book, was your opinion that Auburn should sit Cam Newton down during the investigation. I was amazed that you, and many sports writers, could not see the mischief that would ensue if a player had no knowledge and was not in on the “deal” being brokered by Dad, Mom, Brother, Sister, Uncle, etc. with less than credible loose talk to the wrong type of people . . . . despite your plausible (but unjust) interpretation of SEC rules. The rules need to be changed. The kid has to have knowledge – it’s that simple. One guy came up with the “wink-nod” doctrine, which says, in effect, if a kid’s parent, uncle, brother, etc. is doing something, the kid is presumed by the rules to know about it – no credible evidence the the kid knew anything being necessary. Wow. What a great rule that would be. One school could wreak havoc on an opponent by sending out a squad of loose talkerst to contact the right relatives of the best players — and then claim there was talk aboult a deal — and the investigation would begin — and the player would sit, regardless. Luckily, the SEC came out with the right decision after the investigation since there was no evidence that Cam had knowledge. If they do find credible evidence that he was in on it, then he and Auburn will, and should, burn for it. Looking forward to reading your column/blog next year.

“Ticket sales lag………..Georgia has sold slightly less than 5,000 tickets for the Liberty Bowl, about half of the school’s 10,000-seat allotment. Another 1,000 or so will be used for players, staff and guests. The SEC covers the cost of up to 3,000 unsold tickets from a member school’s bowl allotment, leaving Georgia on the hook for about 1,000 unneeded tickets at $50 apiece.
“It just kind of is what it is,” UGA athletic director Greg McGarity said. “Yeah, you wish you could sell more.” He thinks sales were hurt by the late date on which Georgia became bowl-eligible. The Bulldogs weren’t assured of a bowl until a Nov. 27 victory over Georgia Tech evened their record at 6-6. Clinching bowl eligibility so late delayed promoting ticket sales, McGarity noted”.
Talk about 4 tickets, 4 hot dawgs and 4 cokes!

p.s…I really like the new A.D. Pres Adams could not have made a better choice, IMO.
However, the reality is, ticket sales lag because the team had a lousy season, and the staff has us on a run from the Sugar Bowl in the second year to the Liberty Bowl in the tenth. That should be the other way around. I think they can turn it around, but the fans have come to expect more than Memphis (no offense to Memphisto’s) in December. Which is, btw, an improvement over Shreveport. (no offense Yellow Fuzz, and how’d the vaunted CPJ offense look against a service academy? I thought so.)
Happy New Year y’all

Well, I was doing pretty good down here in Savannah, roaming around Seiler’s yard and licking my b__s now and then. And yesterday comes the call that I’m being brought back. Seems this kid they put in as Russ has come down with a case of the runs. So here comes the white paint can again and I’m headed to the Liberty Bowl. Hey, it’s cold over there and I don’t need no ice cushion. After they use me like a 2-buck w___re,
I’ll be back to Savannah and trying to figure out how to get the paint off.
Anyway, most of us will miss Bradley. He ain’t bad. He gets about 90% of the words spelled right and he’s a good deal smarter than most of the bloggers on here. Happy New Year everybody.

There is no place like New Orleans, There is no place like New Orleans, There is no place like New orleans – are we there yet – there is no place like New Orleans and an SEC championship, its all a dream, right UGA fans, all a dream!

I have a question for all Dawg fans. Do you find Scott Howard to be a terrible play by play announcer? I understand it is hard to follow a legend, but this guy has no clue as to how to announce a football game. Before telling the listeners the number of yards gained or lost, he first must tell you who made the blocks for the offense, who filled the hole for the defense, who made or missed the tackle. Finally, after about thirty seconds, he will tell the audience how much yardage was gained or lost. He gets mixed up on the downs. He calls first downs when, in reality, the Dawgs were 2 or 3 yards short. And, after a screw up like that, he does not even correct his mistake. I cannot listen to the guy. He is pathetic.

Mark you may need that rest. 2011 will be a very trying time for reporters. You can’t mail it in like in years passed. Look at the predictions of 2010. See where Mississippi State or Auburn or South Carolina fit into it. Look how very long it took the press to pick up on the cream, not wanting to let go of the old tried and true SEC powers. Throw in emerging South Florida and UCF, a TCU that very well may be one of the top two schools in the country after beating a powerhouse Big 10 that was kind of like Georgia more hat than cattle. FSU is starting to stir a little in the ACC as I think you will see Va.Tech doing the same. The Big Ten and the Big East are weaker conferences than the ACC and will continue to recover as North Carolina showed some life after AJ Green times 8 type probations. Remember that team gave a LSU team all they could handle in the first game of the season.
Nope if I were the AJC I would make a point of getting Richt fired. Good football in Athens sells papers. You and your cronies have pulled the wool over our eyes too many times about Georgia. It won’t work next year. You may actually have to go to Athens and report on what you see instead of what you are told by its athletic department. When the number one running back in the state stinks you should be the first ones to tell us not pretending to be when you are the last. When the school has an athletic director that is a lush, you should be the first to notice it and equate the failure of the program to the character in charge. You should have notice a Cam Newton long before the middle of the season, in fact it would have been nice to have noticed him before he had gone to Auburn. The joke of someone wanting to pay this guy 200,000 dollars to play football and the AJC not even having him on their radar when he is from College Park tells me hibernation may be your natural state. Throw in the lack of respect for Spurrier who really runs a program like Georgia should and you can see very much like Georgia, Mark you have you work cut out for you next year. I am pulling for you to improve. Happy New Year.
