Do you believe in miracles? For Matty Ice, there were none this night. (AJC photo by Jason Getz)
The biggest home game in franchise history: That’s how this was billed, and here we pause to note that 46 seasons make for a considerable chunk of history. (Almost half a century!) And even if the Falcons entered Monday night’s game against New Orleans with a comfy Plan B — they could lose to the Saints and still win the NFC South and clinch a No. 1 seed by beating Carolina on Sunday — nobody wanted to do it the easy way.
But that, alas, is the way it will have to be. The Falcons tripped over their moment. This isn’t to say they can’t have moments still, but they couldn’t handle this one.
If you’re going to be a champ, you have to show you can beat a champ. The Falcons had already taken down the reigning champs once this fall, but that was in Week 3 in the Superdome when not many people thought this team would be 12-2 on Christmas. That was a case of a rising team slipping up on an established power. Monday night was different: It was a match of peers, a prime-time convocation of two of the NFL’s finest.
It wasn’t a game of precision. Center Todd McClure whiffed on a shotgun snap that spawned the Saints’ first touchdown, and Michael Turner fumbled when the Falcons were poised to take a third-quarter lead. But the defense kept the game close enough for one play to turn it, and one play did.
It was the Falcons’ defense that undid them in their improbable playoff run of 2008, a defense that was so outclassed in Glendale, Ariz., that general manager Thomas Dimitroff flew home determined to embark on a massive redo, and sure enough he (re)did. The Falcons dumped five starters off that 11-5 team and, in going 9-7 last season, paid the inevitable price of such sweeping change. This year, however, has seen the changes brought to bear.
These Falcons can play D with the big boys. On Monday night they held a high-test offense to 10 points — seven off the aforementioned short field — over 56 minutes. They induced Drew Brees, Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year, to commit two egregious fourth-quarter turnovers, the first a silly underhand toss the Chauncey Davis fielded and returned for the go-ahead score, the second a bat-and-grab interception by John Abraham.
The Falcons had a chance after the Abraham swoop to close the case, but a possession sputtered after one first down. Whereupon the Saints drove to a touchdown, Brees finding Jimmy Graham on a slant with 3:24 remaining. But this was what the Falcons’ defense, even in its wobbles, had done all season: It had kept games close enough for Matt Ryan to win them at the end.
And here again was his chance. He hadn’t had a great game through 56 minutes, but the beauty of Matty Ice is that those first 56 minutes can be a red herring. On the first snap after the Saints took their late lead, Ryan scrambled for 20 yards, and you thought, “Here it comes” — the final copyright-protected Falcons Finish of calendar 2010, to be placed on the shelf alongside the escapes against the 49ers and the Ravens and the Packers.
But then a strange thing happened. Ryan threw incomplete on third down, and Mike Smith, the coach who dares to dare, chose to punt inside the final three minutes. It almost worked — the Falcons thought they’d recovered a Graham fumble, but replay correctly overruled — and Matt Ryan never got another chance.
“We didn’t get the outcome we wanted,” Smith said, “but we like where we’re at. Fifteen other [NFC] teams would like to be where we are.”
And that’s true. But there was no hiding the disappointment. “You’ve got to look at the body of work,” Smith said, but this was a night that went against what we’d seen before.
A formula tested over 14 games fizzled in the 15th. The defense held the Saints to 17 points and scored seven itself, which should have been enough to win but wasn’t. The offense couldn’t hold up its end, and the dauntless Smitty outsmarted himself at the end. The biggest regular-season game in Falcons annals will go down, sad to say, as a whiff.

What was this?? Did anyone tell the offense that there was an important game that needed to be played tonight?? They played not to lose on offense and lost they did. CMS coached conservative the whole game and then punt with less than 3mins left in the game!? C’mom man!! If they go into playoffs with the mind set and game plan we saw tonight, the run will end early. This was just gross!!

I AM SICK AND TIRED OF MIKE SMITH’S AND MIKE MULARKEY’S PLAY NOT TO LOSE OFFENSE!!!
Their refusal to stop being so stupidly conservative, their refusal to stop running Turner into 10 man fronts, and their refusal to let Ryan go no huddle all over the Saints’ butts cost the Falcons this game.
This ultra-conservative bulls–t is keeping the Falcons from being the dominating team they can be!
The Falcons have all the pieces on offense to be like the Patriots or the Packers, but when it comes to offensive playcalling, Mike Smith and Mike Mularkey don’t have a single aggressive bone in their body.
Their conservative bulls–t is NOT “real” football. It’s frakking p-ssy football. It’s LOSER’S football.
YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME, DAMMIT!!!
Mike’s Smith and Mularkey play not to lose. And THAT is why they LOST!!!

The offense clearly was terrible. They scored 10 pts and had two horrible fumbles.

Makes no difference who the Atlanta Falcons will play in the post season: they’ll lose. The NO Saints just beat the Falcons tonight 17-14. Some observations from tonight’s game:
1. the Falcons scored exactly one offensive TD against the SB champs
2. by losing the Falcons send the Saints this message: “You guys can own us in our building if you want.”
3. the NO Saints should remain, for years to come, the premier team in the NFC South division and legitimate Super Bowl contenders year in and year out
4. the Atlanta Falcons will contend for second or third place in the NFC South with the Tampa bay Buccaneers year in and year out and be a playoff contender and no better
5. after the Falcon’s loss tonight look for the NO Saints to beat the Tb Bucs at home and enter the playoffs having defeated two good teams
6. the Falcons will win their final game in nondescript fashion against the Carolina Panthers, the worst team in the league, entering the playoffs havving beaten a team they were expected to beat anyway
Wondering how the Falcons will do in the playoffs this year? Look no further than tonight’s loss as the template: the defense plays their butts off, Mike Mularkey’s offense doesn’t do anything. Michael Turner runs like he his cleats are encased in cement blocks and the Birds lose at home in a 17-14 or 17-10 type game.

Tough loss; fundamentals killed the Falcons tonight (what was going on with Brian Williams trying to arm tackle Brees and co. all night?!?). But hopefully the Falcons will be able to tighten things up between now and the playoffs. I’d wager Mike Smith will be drilling certain things home over the next week.
Hard-fought win by the Saints; they’re going to be tough as nails should we have to play them again. But winning twice in a row in the Georgia Dome (if Falcons beat Carolina next week) won’t be an easy feat for them, either.

Once again the lack of courage by the coaching staff is costly.
Two really dumb decisions:
1.) 3rd and 12 at their own ten and for the first time we decide not to blitz and Brees completes this pass without any pressure and drives the team down the field for a winning TD
2.) 4th a 6 under three minutes near midfield and Mike Smith decides to not gamble with Matt Ryan and hope we can keep Drew Brees from getting a first down and he just drove the Saints down the 90 yards the previous series.
Stupid!

We have to accept the Falcons are a good team, but not a dominate team.
The Patriots showed that they were by blowing the doors off the Bears and Jets.
We can only wait till another season and hope that they have room to improve and they have not already topped out!
Dissapointing , but not surprising. They have been on the winning side of too many close games, tonight they were on the wrong side.
The more talented, better coached offensive teams will beat them as they stand.

Very tough loss. Two fumbles basically sank us. It happens. It’s time to have a short memory. Regardless of what the announcers for ESPN think the Saints are entitled to, all the Falcons have to do is go out and beat Carolina and they get the bye, and the championship, and the road to Dallas running through A-town. Props to the Saints, they beat Atlanta, but I’ll tell you all something, if there’s one team the Saints don’t want to look up and see in the playoffs, it’s Atlanta in Atlanta, or anywhere else.

Turner fumbles??
McClure fumbles a snap that looked rigged?
Falcons offense plays very vanilla??
If NFL is rigged here is my predictions:

Well, there’s no question we need a new offensive coordinator. None whatsoever. And there’s no question at all Smitty blew the game with an utterly egregious call in the final minutes. You don’t punt against the Saints in that situation….EVER. EVER. However, They’ve played good enough in the first 14 games to still be in good position; if Smith and our “OC” learned from this we’ll still be fine. But this was a $%#$$y venue to be taught a lesson; 80 million people will now think Trent Dilfer was right.
And for whatever it’s worth, I googled Saints fans websites to get on there and congratulate them and not a single one out of 11 had even updated their site to say they’d won. Apparently despite all their chirping they don’t actually take football seriously after all. I’m surprised. All the Saints fans must either not be able to read or must reside in the ESPN headquarters, as is evident by the announcing. They acted like their sister’s virtue was at stake.

I read this blog hoping to read reasoned discussion around the disappointing loss. Instead I found proof that evolution is a bogus theory as mostly inane and hyperbolic commentary abounds in this blog. We are in the midst of the best time in Falcons history and the best all of you football “experts” can come up with is the silly comments about the offensive players understanding of the importance of the game. Seriously! And comments critical of the “conservative” offense that has only helped win 32 games the last 3 years and has the Falcons still in position to be the #1 seed in the NFC. The coaching staff does a great job maximizing the talent and putting them in positions to succeed. Are they perfect..of course not. If you can not appreciate the job this coaching staff does then I suggest you give up watching football and take up something less challenging to understand.

I have to say that the 1st time we played the saints we won on a fluke FG miss. 9 of 10 times and the saints make that FG and we lose. Tonight, the saints wanted it more in the end. We got outplayed on our own field and i think the saints are the best team in the NFC. Ryan has too many games where he has 17- 30 type games. He flirts with 50% completion ratio in several games and if not for turner and the ground game, we lose 3 or 4 more games easy. If the falcons run game gets stuffed as it was tonight, the falcons are very beatable and it doesn’t matter what field the game is played on.
All that happened tonight was that the saints now have the confidence that they can come in here and beat us in the playoffs!! Ryan stunk tonight, the offensive line stunk, turner looked slow and smith punting on that 4th an 6 was very stupid. Anyone should know sean peyton was gonna get that 1 1st down needed and would throw to get it and HE DID! I knew it was over when we gave brees the ball back. The falcons are good but not a super bowl team. There is not a team in the playoffs except the rams that can’t beat the falcons. White did all that smack talk and gotta it shoved back in his mouth. The birds should win next week and clinch the #1 seed, but the saints proved they can come in here now and beat us in our house. Thanks to a crappy showing by the offense. The saints can do it again as well!!

Still believe in this team, one great thing about the FALCONS, make great adjustments and I believe SMITH has only lost 2 games in a row once. For all of you RYAN HATERS and NO lovers, why would any team be scared of the AINTS after tonight? If the FALCON DEFENSE can hold the SAINTS to 17 points, you think GB, PHI or CHI is scared of Drew Brees and Payton? Even with a bad game, 20 NFL teams would want RYAN over their current QB. Vick would be destroying the franchise for the second time. That would be worse than cruel irony it could be death knell.

The Falcon defense bottled up the Saints except for one damn fool. The same idiot that failed to tackle Drew Brees on free blitzes time and time again was also guilty of choking on crucial Saint completions. Loss still squarely on Michael “Fumble” Turner and Matty Lice. Both hurt team more than they helped it. Especially Turner. First fumble my a$$! I have watched all season long. I KNOW BETTER! Ryan nowhere near a premier NFL QB. Middle of pack at best. Very distasteful defeat! Very much so. Just hope offense shows up against Panthers. If not…STENDEK

Mark, your are right on…I will never understand that punt call on 4th and 6. I mean if it’s 4th and 21, I’d understand…but not when you only need 6 yds and you have all of those weapons.
Smith can say all he wants, but conservative play-calling in this game doomed the Falcons from the beginning. The defense was outstanding and deserved much better…what a shame to lose the game like this.

Get a grip and see the big picture. We win next week and we get what we want. Hopefully, the offensive playbook will be more aggressive in the playoffs when we need it. This game really meant nothing to us (as long as we win next week). It is no statement game for the Saints. Beating them 3 times would have been unrealistic. Things will turn out just perfect.

Our defense was MORE than up to the task, and our offensive play-calling was vanilla (by DESIGN, I’d say…)

Yeah, people are diving off cliffs because we just lost our 1st game in 2 months to a team that is the defending Super Bowl Champs, had to lay everything on the line, and we hamstrung ourselves with a conservative play book (which is the smart play in my opinion).
You would need a modern day miracle to see Carolina beat us on our turf this Sunday. They have a #1 draft pick to play for and we have a #1 seed to play for. They are awful, and we are one of the best teams in the league. We wrap up the #1 seed on Sunday, and everything will be just fine. You guys go take a Xanax and relax a little bit. Sheesh.

Bell, I would agree with you if the Panthers would forfeit the game…but unfortunately, they will be well-rested having not played since last Thursday, and they will come out blazing hot against an emotionally exhausted Falcons team on short rest. You’re a clown, Bradley. What an asinine message. I texted my buddy that I didn’t care how the game ended because it’s clear this franchise has arrived. We are so well-managed/well-coached/well-quarterback it’s ridiculous. You think a staff that truly “gets the big picture” looked at this game as “the biggest game in franchise history”? You’re f*cking nuts. The biggest game in franchise history is the game featuring these two teams later in the year….in the playoffs. The only significance of this game is that it now means we can’t sandbag to try to prevent Carolina from drafting Luck. Otherwise, this game was MEANINGLESS to Dimitroff and the people who really know the score. Only fans and squares like yourself would bat an eye at the result of this game.

No, it isn’t really a big deal statistically that we lost this game. But it was on a big stage where we could have shut the critics (who are legion) up and established ourselves as the team to beat. We still are in reality, but our coaches played not to lose instead of to win and now we’ll get the same lack of respect in the playoffs as we got in the regular season.

All you people who think this game didn’t mean much to the Falcons, pack your lunch and watch from the cheap seats from now on….this game wasn’t about just this game, it was about stepping up a level. Clearly the Falcons are not there yet. I like the direction, but we have 2 really big glaring problems, both on offense:
1. Matt Ryan
2. Mike Mularkey
Ryan got out-played by a seasoned veteran Quarterback in Brees, completely understandable. My biggest complaint with Matt is that he seems to not be doing so well in pressure situations. Hell, he was better in his first year than he has been this year. You keep looking for Matt to step up, like Brees does, when the game is on the line and right now he just looks either a. confused or b. scared.
Both Smith and Mularkey got out-coached tonight by Sean Payton. Payton didn’t blink and Smith didn’t bother trying to outsmart him. the offensive mindset to conitnually push the bull via the run on first down is not competitive at this level. You have to be creative and our play calling is just flat out not. Where were the quick screens tonight, the dumps to TG on quick slants inside? Did you see what Drew Brees did all night to us?
300+ yards of passing and none of it was more than 20 yards. He owned us in the short yardage.plays but he kept the chains moving.
Turner and Snelling were both ineffective tonight. Yes, some of that was the O-line but using Turner straight up the middle on the same play twice at the goal line was not smart. Why don’t we sweep outside once in a while – New Orleans knew exactly what we were going to try when we lined up for first and goal, hell the whole world new. No creativity whatsoever and that falls directly on the coaching staff.
Outcoached and outplayed.
Offense: D
Defense: B-
Coaching:
Smith: C
Mularkey: F
BVG: B
One and done in the playoffs kids, despite the home field advantage we’ll have. Gotta know the Eagles and the Saints are going to give us fits.
And Breesus, give it a rest loser, You’re giving the real New Orleans fans a bad name…..

WOW! What type of “fans” are you people? In a long season, games like this are bound to creep up. A hard fought defensive battle that went down to the last few possessions. FALCONS D was RIDICULOUS tonight!! This was the best I’ve seen them all year, and they showed up big against the defending SB champs and one of the premier QB’s in the league. Our O was obviously stagnant as most folks have mentioned but to come on ajc and completely sell out our boys after a tough loss is spineless! Last I checked we still own the best record in the NFC and it’s not by accident. We have played lights out all year and last time on national TV, handed the Ravens a L. Furthermore, these division games always go tit for tat and it’s a knock out drag out type of game (ask P. Thomas) that is close 99.9% of the time, just check the history of this series. Not to mention, Drew Brees didn’t have a much better game than M. Ryan but somehow found a way to win. I applaud him but don’t for one minute question the heart or skill of M. Ryan. The man is money, don’t judge him based on one performance. Let’s do that with you on your job and see if you stand the test of time…I think not. Also, for all you who call CMS conservative, you’re talking about a man with heart and passion and who will go for it on 4th and whatever and most of the time is successful. They will re-group like elite teams do and come back with more zeal and fire in their bellies to take care of business hereafter. As a former player, trust me when I say this loss will leave a bitter taste in their mouth, and in the end may turn out to be just what they needed at the time they needed it to propel them to greatness! GO BIRDS! Here’s looking forward to Dallas!!

“Go to ESPN and look at the Strength of Schedule. Saints had the easiest schedule in the entire NFL.”
I’m not denying that this is possible. I’m just saying that division rivals always have the same schedules with the exception of two games. This is the case year in and year out. This year the entire NFC South played six intra-division games, and also played the NFC West and the AFC North. That’s 8 games against below-.500 teams (Panthers x2, Browns, Bengals, Rams, Seahawks, 49ers, Cardinals) for both the Falcons and Saints. Each team then played each other twice as well as the Bucs twice (an above-.500 team), the Ravens, and the Steelers — that’s 6 above-.500 teams. The remaining two games the Falcons played were against the Packers and Eagles, while the Saints played the Cowboys and Vikings — these two games are the big difference between the two teams’ strength of schedule. Other than those, they had identical schedules this year.

Who Dat….it IS meaningless, given our TWO game lead with two to play going in, knowing the other is a HOME game against CAROLINA.
I lived in New Orleans for a year, Louisiana for five, and yet it never ceases to amaze me the level of ig’nunce that permeates that fan base.
WHEN we beat Carolina next week, ask yourself how meaningful this game was to us, k?

Basically the point is that when comparing divisional opponents, strength of schedule plays a relatively minor role because of the way the NFL schedule is made up every year.

I’m not gonna call it a meaningless game because there was a lot of pride on the line, but calling it the most important home game in history is so far from the truth as to be laughable. It had only the most miniscule of effects on the Falcons playoff seeding. The Saints are very likely to have to come back here again in less than a month – if they take care of their own business. That game will mean something. This was just a good hard fought game that will do nothing to make the Falcons believe that they aren’t still the better team. Our D looked great out there.
It honestly sounds a lot easier to prevent a good team from beating us twice one month in the Dome than it would have to have to beat a good team 3 times in one season. I don’t think we’ll whiff on a snap or fumble on the goal line next time.

You keep bringing up HISTORY. You got your trophy, and nothing that happens will take it away from ya…
…but we’re talking about T-H-I-S season, and you bringing it up only deflects the conversation from what we’re talking about N-O-W.

Come on, people!! We lost a heartbreaker to a very good football team that we beat earlier in the year. Stop blaming the coach, the players, etc. The winning streak was bound to end sometime. I’d rather it end now than in the playoffs. Get a grip!! The Falcons played a great game tonight, particularly on defense. They just came up a few plays too short. Look at it this way: it is rare that a team can beat a good opponent 3 times in one season. If we had to lose a game to the Saints, better now than in the playoffs. The Falcons will wrap up the division and home field advantage on Sunday. No way will we lose to the pathetic Panthers. The Falcons are going to the Super Bowl!!!!

This team is good, not great. As good as the defense played, how many missed tackles and blown sacks did they have? The Saints exploited our one remaining weakness on offense…we can’t throw deep. Billy (Not) Martin . …. .our Offense doesn’t have to scare anyone . . . it just has to be as consistent as it normally has been throughout the year. Today they did not do what they have normally done . …..great on 3rd downs, control time of possession, and score around 25 points .. . .their average. I don’t think many teams watching this game think less of the Falcons because of a close loss to a very good NO team. They may look for pointers on how to hold the offense to 14 points . . .. .but that is easier said then done as has been proven throughout the year.

We needed this loss badly.
It wasn’t a complete wake-up call like the Bears losing to New England a couple weeks ago but just a gentle reminder that “you ain’t all that”.
While I love my Dirty Birds, I told more than a couple people that I hope we lose tonight to get some perspective back.
This week will be a great practice and that Carolina team might even perform better than our 3rd string so we’ll get a good workout while humiliating them further at the Georgia Dome.
Fact remains this is the finest 3 years of Falcons performance in all the years I’ve been watching them. We are now a force in the NFC and everyone around the league is taking notice – all eyes are now turning towards Atlanta.

Sorry Falcons fans, but your team had this coming thanks to Roddy White and his arrogant, look-at-me tweeting. Call the reigning Super Bowl champs Aints and you’ll get a fight, not that the Black and Gold needed any extra motivation.

COACHING FAILURE!
Earth to Falcons coaching staff: Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, and Tony Gonzalez are the offensive engines of this team. Micheal Turner is only one man.
OUR DEFENSE PLAYED AT A LEVEL THAT WOULD LET ATLANTA BEAT ANY TEAM IN THE NFL. OUR OFFENSE PLAYED WITH ONE ARM TIED BEHIND ITS BACK BECAUSE OF THE PLAY CALLING!! TWO catches for Gonzalez and THREE CATCHES for Roddy White SAYS IT ALL
WE HAVE A CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER TEAM WITH A COACH CALLING HIGH SCHOOL TYPE PLAY SEQUENCES!
DO YOU READERS THINK WE CAN WIN A SINGLE PLAYOFF GAME IF WE OPERATE OUR OUR OFFENSE THIS WAY?
WE WILL BE PLAYING GOOD TEAMS PROBABLY NEW ORLEANS AND PHILADELPHIA. ONE LOSS AND WE ARE OUT! BOTH OF THESE TEAMS ALREADY HAVE OUR NUMBER (OFFENSIVE PLAY CALLING SEQUENCE)!!!
I have said this MANY times in posts during the year. Our play calling is too predictable!!! It is obvious that NEW ORLEANS knew our usual sequence of how Mike Malarkey calls the plays. We were beaten before the initial kick-off.
There are too many Turner runs on first and second down when he has 0, -1, -2, -3, ,,,, -5 yards to put the team in a no-win situation. Then Matt Ryan is under pressure to make a first on third down.
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU READERS SEEN THIS HAPPEN THIS YEAR? And last year?
I am not a football coach but if I see the tendency, the NEW Orleans coaches certainly see the tendency. After the Jenkins interference in the end zone, our objective should have been to score points NOT to prove that Turner can run the ball into the end zone. A play action pass would have been a great first down play call. We didn’t learn on the first attempt, so let’s run Turner again. COME ON MAN (Malarkey), points win a game not your stubbornness to continue to run Turner in this way.
After the Abraham interception, there are no excuses for not scoring points. This low level scoring urgency has been the norm all year. We are playing the big boys now, not the losers of the NFL.
Running Turner this way has happened so many times this year and mostly at a first down situation. I said it before, if Mike Smith continues to let Malarkey call plays like he does, then Mike Smith is part of the problem too.

I think we all need to pump the brakes here a little bit. This wasn’t the crushing defeat that some would lead you to believe. Would it have been great to beat our rivals on Monday Night Football? Absolutely. But on a night when Atlanta’s offense was uncharacteristically poor, the team still managed to hang in the game and only lost by three to a high-powered offense.
Consider:
- The fumble by McClure, a rare mistake by a team that makes very few. Brees is one of maybe two QBs that will capitalize on a bad turnover like that, and he did.
- Turner’s fumble at the Saints’ two yard line, another rare mistake by a guy who had yet to turn the ball over this year. If the Falcons come away with even only a FG there (which is very likely), it’s a completely different game.
- The lack of production from three of the team’s four MVPs (Ryan, Turner, Gonzalez). The play calling was certainly suspect, but rare is the game when a defense shuts down all three of those guys. I think the announcers said it best by pointing out that the familiarity the Falcons and Saints have with one another probably contributed to the shutdown defense the Saints played.
Call me biased, but I’m still positive the Falcons are the better team. With any kind of offense the Falcons win that game hands down.
This was a humbling loss for Atlanta. They’re not unbeatable at home, nobody is, but there’s still a considerable advantage for them playing at the Dome, without question. They should be able to work on a few things this week and go out and take care of business Sunday. If they win, they’re number one. And they should. Forget the Saints.

I knew this would come the first time this team lost a game. They have won 8 straight games and get blasted because they lose to the SB Champs. The Saints are champions people, you beat them once, that’s about all any reasonable fan should expect. Do you people expect them to never lose again, unreal. The other guys get paid as well, the Saints just played better tonight. ATL beat them there, NO beat ATL here, so what now? ATL just need to do what NO did and beat Carolina twice.
This owner and team is about to do something no owner or team in the history of this franchise has ever done, host the National Football Conference SB tournament. Mike Vick, Chris Chandler, Steve Bartkowski, Dave Archer or any other Falcon was able to do what Ryan and his group is about to do in two weeks.
They are who I thought they were, sorry Denny!

This will be a blessing and not just because it may wake up the coaching staff from its delusions of conservatism but because it will force the Falcons to play next week. The Falcons were not good enough to take 2 weeks off before the playoffs.
I was praising Smith a week ago for going for it on 4th down and what does he do…punts the ball away in an obvious situation never to see it again.

It took the only botched snap of McClure’s career and the first and only fumble for Turner this season to beat the Falcons by 3.

Come down off the ledge everybody. Falcons will still win the division and get homefield throughout the playoffs and the Saints will have to come back through here. They played like crap especially the offense and still almost won. It wasn’t a bad omen. It was a hard fought game against a division opponent when Atlanta brought its C game. The defense was amazing not counting the last TD drive. They were due a loss. Now they can re-focus and prepare for what will likely be a 2nd round showdown with these same Saints. I would be willing to bet my life the Falcons win that one.

so what’s your point? The point being made by Saints fans is that you guys are not as good as you think. The Falcan’ts had a chance to wrap up everything last night and show the nation how good they are…boy did they ever choke. In the biggest game of the season, your workhorse RB fumbles in the redzone, your (louisiana bred) Center fumbles, and your “elite” QB can’t make a comeback. Let that sit in a minute…. Now, what are they going to do when the game is not just a regular season game but the NFC championship? My guess is probably $h!t their pants….

Just Curious. Anyone thought about this. We KNEW we were in the playoffs. We also KNEW NO would be there too. They pulled out a lot of stuff we hadn’t seen. They beat us, fair and square, or we beat ourselves. Do you think Coach is holding some things back? Do you think Roddy’s knee is healed, really? Defense played great against a top tier offense. We actally gave them the lead, twice, adn came back. Can’t discount Brees. He’s an MVP, and played like Matt Ryan on that last drive. I say Kudos. We learned something, or we had better learn something. One of the Better Monday Night Games ever. I won’t dog the Saints fans. They can’t help it. They deserve to boast. Personally speaking, this game didn’t concern me, too much. I’m hoping they “lay low” last evening against the Saints, not wanted to give away too much, in the event they play them again, or to have anyone injured prior to the playoffs. The winning streak and home “aura” of invincibility is all well-and-good, but getting through the game healthy was more important, and winning Sunday against Carolina will serve the same purpose as beating the Saints – all roads STILL come through Atlanta.

You gotta love Who Dat Nation. Now that they have a champion they will glout forever. How about some real game analysis?
As for other comments on this board – such as champions win games like this. Do they? Didn’t the Saints lose a big Saturday night game at 13-0 at home against the Cowboys last year? In fact didn’t they lose their last 3 in the regular season and win the Super Bowl? How about the 8-8 Cardinals in 2008? This is one game that you lost by 3 points to a top NFC team and IMO the best quarterback in the NFC. No matter who the Falcons play in the playoffs, except if somehow the NFC west champ gets by the first round, it will be a pick-em game. The Falcons, Saints, Packers, Eagles, or Bears could go to the Super Bowl and I would not be surprised.

Listen to this Saints fans and haters and listen good, the Falcons are in the driver seat to host it all because they beat teams you could not beat (Arizona and Cleveland). The significance of this game was severely overblown. The media hyped it up, but the fact of the matter is that it’s only one game and the Falcons face the worst team in the league (at home) next week and will wrap up the home field advantage for the playoffs. Our defense played well last night. Our offense didn’t. No doubt about it. Play selection on first down was unimaginative at times and Ryan did not consistently make good decisions. In spite of it all, the Falcons lost by a field goal so let’s not get carried away here, Mark, with all this “they whiffed” crap. The Falcons will take care of business next week and this game will be a thing of the past. I like the Falcons chances at home in the playoffs. Win or lose, they have had a tremendous season and we should be happy about that.

The Falcons will be lucky to make it out of the first round of the playoffs. The defense is playing over their heads (that is good) and our offense is just plain average. You shut down the run, you shut down Atlanta. We need another top tier receiver to replace Douglas, who I don’t know why they even throw the ball to. We played a gritty game, but when it came down to it, we showed we still are not an Elite team, just good.

“ESPN analysts are already naming 4 different teams that can beat the Falcons at home during the playoffs.”
WELL DARN! I guess this means, that even though the Falcons have already beaten 3 of the other 5 teams projected for the playoffs, we might as well tell the Falcons to give their playoff spot to Brett Favre!
“Matty has a nice record but no meaningful wins meaning playoff wins”
Such a baseless stat. You base a number like “playoff wins” from the previous season (i.e. a different team). Throw in the fact the regular season comes first. See, it determines who plays in the playoffs. Also, a 1st seed team that makes it to the Super Bowl will only have played and won 2 games. A 5th or 6th seed that makes it to the Super Bowl will have played and won 3 games. So by this logic, your team isn’t elite unless they barely grab a wildcard spot resulting in more road games for the playoffs. Makes perfect sense.
“Turner phat*ss fumbled again in his biggest game as a Falcon” – You mean “fumbled again” as in since last year? You mean “biggest game” as in it didn’t cost Atlanta the Division with a 1st seed?

Falcons D played lights out. They showed some nice blitz packages we haven’t seen all year. I would have gone for it on fourth down, but understand CMS’s thinking. Ryan is much better out of the gun or no huddle and we desperately need a back to go along with Turner that has some speed and can get to the corner. With those changes this team is real tough to beat.

Somehow I just knew all day Monday the Falcons would find a way to lose. I’m not really a pessimist, but this comes from watching the Falcons since 1966. I still remember Falcons losing to Danny White and the Cowboys, after gaining a 2 TD lead late, and knocking out Staubach. This game tonight was just as big. What is so scarey is they lost it the exact same way. Play great defense for 54 min. and then all of a sudden just abandon that plan and go into a vanilla defense. Some call it prevent. Drew Brees does nothing all night against Atl D, and then when it matters most , WENT PREVENT!!!! If you want to be a champion, then Da**it you have to beat a champion……..I’m done…..

And I have read a variation of similar comments by other bloggers on Bradley’s or Schultz’s blog. And all I can ask is are you people serious? With the mentaility of some fans that is why championships are hard to come by in Atlanta. The Pats also did not “need” to win their game against the Bills on Sunday because they had already secured a playoff berth and were in total command of their division. However, because they think, act, and play like “Champions” they went out there and established their supremacy in the AFC and the league; forecasting to everyone that we will not take any prisoners and will win anywhere and everywhere. It’s rather disgusting to read some fans write that “oh this loss was no big deal” or “we needed this loss” or “this game meant nothing”. BULL!!!

i would like to see the falcons win without having a running game. i don’t honestly believe they can, and a lot of that is the malarkey/smith not play to lose philosophy. without a running game they don’t seem to handle QB pressure well, as ryan really needs to have the run fake to set up his passing. the falcons have had a great season and are a good team. they are not a great team. maybe that doesn’t exist in the NFL anymore. they are all compromised in some way, shape of form. the falcons are compromised with a fomulaic offense that can’t adjust very well to the running game being taken away. i thought the falcons defense was highly compromised, but it has come around nicely, and played quite well last night.
it bothers me that it is a 0-1 decision for a defensive coordinator playing the falcons. stuff the box/ stop the run, take away the run fake to set up the pass, and put pressure on ryan. they have got to let ryan sink or swim with a balls to the wall passing game. he has to show he can pick apart a blitzing, stacked defense, or the season will end quickly.
the saints had to win last night and the falcons didn’t. that does matter in the NFL. at least no one got injured. but the heat is on now for carolina. they blow that game and anybody who’s been around this town for a long time will see the ghosts of atlanta chokers rising from the field turf.

OK Falcons, the sun came up this morning and you are still in first place in the NFC South. Take care of business Sunday… If the football gods are kind to us we will see Seattle, Chicago, and the NYG win on Sunday, sending the Saints a long way to Seattle and eliminating the Packers, who are starting to play like most predicted in the preseason. Hopefully the Saints will be forced to play in freezing rain for 3 plus hours. Bears have a good defense that could punish the Eagles and pull the upset or at the very least exhaust Philly in freezing temps. It would be nice to host Seattle or a road weary Saints in round 2 and then a road weary Bears or a beat up Eagles team in the NFCCG. To Falcon’s fans from a Saints fan. You have a good team. Your defense played well but unfortunately ran into a highly motivate Saints defense and offense. This is what I wanted to talk to you Falcon fans about. Next time you get into a fight, don’t tell your opponent that after you kick his As you are going to have his wife then eat his children because that will motivate him in a big way, if he’s a man that is. That’s what you all did, talking like the Saints weren’t the SB Champs, like you had the game won. Saints fans love the Saints 20 INTs and all and Saints love their fans. One more thing, never underestimate the Champ, its folly to do so.

so, we take care of Carolina and win the division. and New Orleans becomes the number 5 seed as wild card (w/ Green bay or someone else as 6 seed) and plays the number 4 seed- whoever wins the incredibly lame NFC west. the saints win, and the number 3 seed- either chicago or philly- likely beats the 6 seed (although green bay w/ aaron is a tough team…). if that happens, the falcons- the number 1 seed- gets the lowest seed survivor. most likely New Orleans…. so…. we are likely to be seeing biggest game in franchise history round 2 in about 3 weeks…
actually, the carolina game this weekend becomes the biggest game in franchise history. you are playing the worst team in the league and with a win at home you clinch the division, number 1 seed, bye week and home field throughout. i think those are pretty big stakes right there. to me- THAT becomes a franchise history game.

Falcon fans ought to cheer up. In fact, they need to realize they are lucky to be living in a golden age of Falcon football. Fact 1: Falcons just played the Champs to a draw. Fact 2. Falcons are among the top 2 teams in the NFC. Eagles have a mediocre defense. Bears have a mediocre offense. The Giants are inconsistant. The NFC West is an abomination. Fact 3. The Falcons have a true rival in the Saints. A rivalry that now matches the Eagles-Giants, Steelers-Falcons, Green Bay-Bears. Falcons fan can look forward to circling twice a season the Saints game knowing those games will make or break a season. These will be national games. These will be games to gather in bars and host viewing parties.

I know my following comments are a “half-full” outlook on things and i may be way off base…
But, looking “Big Picture” at the season and heading into the playoffs.
This loss is may not be as bad as it first seems.
Here me out. If we win last night and win against the Panthers, that is a 10 game winning streak heading into the playoffs. And if we get to and win the SuperBowl, which is what we want, that would be a winning streak of 13 games. THAT, just does not happen very often.
Did i want to beat the Saints and finish it off in style on MNF? absolutely.
But, if this loss get’s the Falcons refocused to the point where they play very well for their next 4 games… And we end up playing the Saints again… i think we beat them in the dome. We most likely would not have beaten them 3 straight games in one season anyway…
So, last night’s loss was not much more than 1 loss and didn’t mean a whole lot. It was a blow to the ego and a national let down… But in the “Big Picture” described above, it just might serve us well in the long run.
(at least, that is what i am hoping for!)

Biggest game in franchise history?? Not even close! The game was basically meaningless. Kinda like a preseason game. We will dominate Carolina next week and get the top seed. Its whats done in the playoffs thats important. If we had won last night, but someone important like Matt Ryan had gotten hurt… THEN it would of been a huge loss overall! But hes healthy… and were the top seed… so last night is no big deal. Go Falcons!

The true test will be in the NFC post-season. If the Eagles and Falcons match up for the conference game, THAT will — so far — be considered — the most important game in the history of the franchise. Gotta hand it to Mr. Blank for taking the time to turn around a dysfunctional franchise, top to bottom. Maybe someday will win the Super Bowl.

We need to stop blaming Mularkey and start blaming Turner when we lose (which isn’t often).
Mularkey has built a very good strong running game/play action offense – and he’s getting the absolute max out of every player but one.
When the other team puts 8 in the box to stop the run, Mularkey is simply asking Turner to grind out 2 or 3 tough yards, regardless of whether or not the hole is there. Get us to a manageable 3rd and 4 Michael, that’s all you have to do.
But Turner only runs hard when there’s a hole. Then he gets a head of steam going and good things happen. But far too often, when there’s no hole, Turner folds up like a cheap card table – he refuses to fight for tough yards. He leads the league in carries of 2 yards or less.
Mularkey has got to be pulling his hair out over Turner. “You’re built like a dang tank, just run someone over!”……..
Turner looks way to concerned about wear and tear on his body.
If he doesn’t “get the memo” next week, the Falcons need to take the offensive game plan they had for the Ravens (which did not include much of Turner) throughout the playoffs.

Ok I have read all the post. There are sick Falcons fans out there. This game counted on your record if you want to admit it or not. This was a game for the world to see and the Falcons laid an egg. When the running game got taken away Ryan did not even try to stretch the field. You can’t run the ball in the playoffs with 8 in the box. So you have to go deep to back the safety up. The whole league knows that Atlanta is not going deep, so this loss was very disturbing. You can’t win in the playoffs if you can’t run ball. Last night was a dose of reality went up against a good team and was beaten easily with to bad turnovers by the opposing team. This is what needs to happen get a new QB before it is to late you saw it last night and you have seen when he was a rookie in the playoffs in Arizona he is not a big game QB no killer instinct sorry.

I’ve been a Falcons fan since ‘66 and wanted to win this game badly – for all the reasons that have been alluded to above. But I remember how it was to watch the Cowboys, Steelers, Raiders, etal, in the playoffs year after year thinking about how nice it would be if the Falcons were relevant at this time of year. Well here we are! The Falcons will be here at this time of year for a long time and will win it all soon – if not this year – stay thirsty, the season ain’t over!!

agree with nhe re: Turner. he doesn’t look very explosive when there is traffic in front of him. he’s hell on wheels when there is a seam and he can get through the line of scrimmage, but he does not run over people- ever- at the point of attack. seems to be more concerned as to how he protects himself vs. breaking free. i don’t understand why the don’t use snelling more as a banger. he seems to be much more willing to run into the wall then turner.
lets face it. any defensive coordinator in this unimaginative league of me-too offensive schemes (save for bellichik and andy reid) has a simple game plan he basically hast to follow when playing the falcons. stack the box, stop the run and therefore eliminate the play action passing game, and force ryan to evade the primary rush and get the ball out quickly. ryan is improving on that note, but its still the way to beat the birds. the falcons success in the postseason really rests with their defense, because their offense is not going to score a lot of points.
PS: the best thing that could happen to the falcons is for mike malarkey to get one of the head coaching jobs available. he has maxed out as offensive coordinator. can’t take them to a level of innovation that you need to have to win the whole thing.

Go figure. All the saints fans have come out to bash the falcons. Well I think we gave yall one tonight just like you gave us one in the dome. Now we dont have to worry about beating yall three times in one year. Twice will be fine with me. This game does not prove anything. All it does is just set this thing back one week. It was a tough fought division game that happens every year. Look at the falcons last year. They were playing for nothing and still almost beat em twice last year. This means nothing. I love the falcons chances if they come back.
Gee how could nobody see this coming. As soon as the Falcons loose one freaking game then everyone in the city freaks out. Lets fire everyone now and bring back jim mora too. Relax guys were 12 and freakin 3. 3!!!!! Nobody saw this coming at all. So relax guys its not the end of the world. So what they lost a game. We still have the best record in the NFC.

WOW!!!! Listen to some of you…..The Saints had a tougher schedule than the Falcons. That’s by virtue of having a superbowl season. Not even room for arguement there. The Falcons played the Saints tough. Real tough. The blitz just kept coming. Coach Smith would love to take his decision to punt back with hindsight. But looking at the way the Falcons defense was on Brees, it may not have been such a terrible call after all AT THAT TIME. The Falcons should beat Carolina with ease. Very possible last nights game could be a preview of things to come. As a Saints fan, I would love to beat the Falcons again. But you know what? I’d rather not play them again. I’m sure Falcon fans feel much the same way about the Saints. Let’s face it. The Saints beat the Falcons in a very hard fought game.

The Falcons wonder why they get no respect…..it’s because when they find themselves in a position to really make a statement (like last night) they roll over at home and show the whole country their true colors. Then everyone remembers why they didnt give these clowns respect in the first place. Fumble the ball away at the 1? Get a late gift turnover and do nothing with it? Punt the ball away in the waning minutes while trailing the defending world champs?

It seems awful funny to me, that when the Falcons get beat by the 10 win defending Super Bowl Champs, in a game they could have easily one but for a couple mistakes; in a game that ultimately meant nothing, every fair weather fan/ commentator/ analyst says the Falcons are finished, washed up and pretenders, but the Eagles get beat by a 5 win team with a 3rd string QB on two extra days rest, with home field advantage on the line and everything to win for and they say “They just had a bad night”. Falcons were completely dominated in EVERY category by Saints and if not for mistakes giving a gift wrapped TD, the only score woulda been the one drive that was built on 50% penalties! Of course the first win also came off a botched glorified extra point Saints chose to kick ON FIRST DOWN since it was so close! so thank Saints for mistakes that saved Falcons from getting swept again this year! Next time the meet Saints, Ivory will be ready and Falcons have never seen the 3 headed running monster run game Ivory, Bush, and Thomas! If they couldn’t handle the one dimensional passing Saints, well it’s just going to be ugly next time when they face a balanced pass and running Saints!

Dr. Z: Rationalize it any way you want, your team got taken the wood shed and given a good ole whipping. Your offense was manhandled by the Saints Defense, HANDLED! The Saints dominated every statistical category in the box score IN YOUR HOUSE! The Saints proved that the falcan’ts can be beaten at home, that the falcan’t offense is soft and fragile. The Saints GAVE your team 7 points and allowed your anemic offensive 7 points the entire night.
No, it was a meaningful game last night. The falcan’ts were flying high and whopping it up so much that even Roddy White thought it appropriate to trash talk on twitter. Should the Saints be traveling back to ATL (and that’s a big assumption since I doubt that the falcan’ts can elude the Packers again) it will be the Saints who will have the psychological advantage, not your team.

I said it before the game on one of these articles. The Falcons did the right thing in not showing the Saints anything on offense. They had nothing to gain by doing so. The high, high probability was that these two teams meet again in the playoffs in Atlanta and that is the game that matters. Better to have lost this game with a vanilla offensive than to lose in the playoffs. That being said, we better hope that is what the Falcons were actually doing. Otherwise, its 1980 all over again. I am scarred for life from that game.

The guy who can do no wrong, even when he does nothing right. Blame it on M. Turner, R. White, D. Robinson. the defense as a whole, off coordinator, head coach, or whoever. We win in Carolina, and home field advantage. I will take that.
However, this is the first time all year I will criticize this team.
Eric Weems ran away from the ball all night long. The offense seemed unable or unwilling to adjust when the run game was taken away.
Matt Ryan was indecisive on a couple of plays, including one where he should have run the ball, but flinged it towards Snelling at the last second.
The punt return game was embarrassing and it gave me the impression we went into the game planning on being conservative, except on defense which was a brilliant scheme, until the last drive.
That is not the Falcons of this year.
You want to be champions, you have to take risks.
Come on guys, what the hell was Weems doing out there?

148 yards passing!!! wow is that a misprint or what?? 148 yards passing for a pro qb who is supposed to be an elite qb. He has to do much much better than that. Earlier in the year i warned that those kind of numbers were unacceptable for this team, especially against a good team ala the Saints. Now you see for yourselves!!

@ Jo/@ The Big Hurt…………(are you the same person?)…………..I agree with The Big Hurt to a point, but I think you’re being a little unfair. Saying the Falcons are “far away” from the coach/QB/scheme of NE and NO isn’t necessarily true.
You have to remember that the Falcons are 2 torn ACLs (Douglas and Norwood) away from looking very different in their ability to stretch the field and get playmakers into space.
I think Dimitroff is committed to the NE model – fast defense with a 9 man DL rotation, and a QB oriented, multi-faceted offense. We are forced unfortunately to have had to rely on Turner FAR MORE than we want to. Douglas doesn’t have the burst he had his rookie year, and not having Norwood on the field hurts far more than we even know. You put those 2 guys (fully healthy) in the mix, and you have a lot more plays made in space and a lot more 20+ yard plays.
What we have now is probably the slowest offense (at the skill positions) in the NFC. To be 12-3 without the ability to stretch the field and with a still young/still evolving defense is a huge credit to Dimitroff and the coaching staff.
I fully expect next year that we will have 2 new playmakers on our offense, and that we will look much more like what you’re referring to.

What is wrong with Sports
December 29th, 2010
11:01 am
The things said by Bradley and the reactions of fans and sports talk people are everything that is wrong with sports. While it is valid to pick apart plays and decsions made when evaluating a game the bottom line is that that two teams played a close game and as the case usually is, only one team can win. To act like the previous 15 weeks meant nothing for either team is a joke. New Orleans has lost to two horrible teams in Cleveland and Arizona but because they were able to win this game all memory is erased because people just want to talke about “now”. The same goes for the Falcons winning 8 straight games as demonstrated by Bradley acting as if they had just been eliminated from the playoffs. The Falcons won eight straight games to put them in a position not to have to win the Saints game in order to win the division and be the number one seed. That should be taken into account when evaluating a team just like the two bad losses by New Orleans that has put them in a position to still be a Wild Card. Had the situation been reversed and the Falcons had won this game, but because of losses to Cleveland and New Orleans, Mark Bradley would have indicated that while it was a win the Falcons missed there chance with the previous losses. He wrote this garbage to get a responses because the AJC sports department is pretty much a ghost these days. Bradley once wrote an article about how great the acquisition of Reggie Sanders was for the Braves. Just one of the many “whiffs” is his un-destinguised career.

Prediction – (remember where you heard it)………if healthy, Deangelo Williams will be a Falcon next year!……….combine Williams with an early around 4.3ish playmaker pick (doesn’t have to be a big name, just someone who can stretch the field) and we will have what the offense is lacking this year.
Williams has the character, personality, and skillset that the Falcons need and want, and he’s available.
I’ll wait till around May or June to give my “I told you so”.

Mularky’s predictable play calling lost that game.. M Turner right. M Turner left. Pass to the flat. If we could play action somebody and go deep we might at least keep people honest.
I can take a loss from the Falcons.. Heck Im used to it but it was the way they lost on Monday that reminded me of the Falcons of old.

To all Falcon fans ,who don’t believe the Saints beat you but were lucky. First game Saints miss winning field goal, Falcons get a chance and win.. Monday Falcons got a gift from Brees for a touchdown, other than that they scored one touchdown.Saints stopped Falcons on 3 yd line. Saints scored 17 points, you got lucky once and got beat the other.Saints may not win or even go deep into the playoffs, but they re better than Falcons.

Who/where/is/was Peoria(doughboy) Jerri ? May have misspelled his name because he has been AWOL all season..That muffed draft pic (Franchise player..ha ha..) has become the reason our team is still predictable on offense and why we focused so much on shoring up our defense.. Most any First, second, third, etc..pick would have made a greater contribution (on either side of the ball) than he has..We crapped out on him and we have paid the price..(One potentially major piece of the team puzzle not on board..)

TomDawg, does the Falcon win by 3 points over the Saints count as a great win.Falcons only scored 7 points by my caculations that is a 10 point loss. This team will not win the super bowl, saints showed the nfl how to beat a bunch of wannabes.

Why would anyone be lamenting the absence of Norwood? He hasn’t been relevant in the last 2-3 years, if ever in his career. That was a wasted draft pick, and i fault the Falcons for taking so long to realize they couldn’t depend on him to stay healthy. It’s also their fault they wouldn’t sign a big play off. threat, when they’ve been available. I don’t think any team will ever win if they depend on only “PG” rated players, and not be willing to take a risks on players who may be a “R” rating. Using vanilla players only, gets you a vanilla record only!!

Though we got lucky in the 1st game. The Saints got lucky this time like they typically do. Drew Brees’ best play was his John Abraham tackle. That was 6 points. All I have to say to the fans of New Orleans is the FEMA money has run out. There will be no more hand outs and you can’t blame Bush any longer. I can’t wait to see them again in the playoffs. Whaaaaaaaaa! Hurricane Katrina! Whaaaaaaa!

2 days later and I’m still ticked off we lost. This was a totally winnable game! Someone on the radio said maybe Mularkey held back because we might see the Saints again in the postseason. That is ridiculous! Nope, Mularkey is just that bad that he couldn’t make any offensive adjustments to them stuffing our run game. And Mike Smith lost his nerve big time. He may say he doesn’t regret not going for it but he’s lying. And the aftermath with them posing on our logo and supposed urination taking place is just vile. I hope we do end up playing them again: we won’t forget their disgusting disrespectful behavior and we will take our revenge accordingly. Also, Matt Ryan: ignore every play Mularkey calls and said your headset wasn’t working. Throw it to Finn!!!

We are upset because we lost a chance to prove we belong in the same class as the Saints, Pats, etc. Once again, we laid an egg on national TV. Our coaches with the big exception of BVG (kudos to you and the defense we were fantastic!! Brian Williams just has to learn how to tacke) were totally outcoached. I agree, where were the slants, the screen passes?? Any offensive adjustment whatsoever??? We can’t continue to jam slow butt Turner at everyone, on lesser teams that works but not against a talented team like the Saints. Why to we not use all of the offensive weapons at our disposal? Finn disappears for huge chunks of the game, banished to the sideline. Jenks was awesome for 2 series, then we forget him?? We can’t just rely on Roddy and TG. I am so frustrated with this offense!! Fire Mike Mularkey, please for the love of God.

Predictable play calling is the first complaint fans have about their teams offense. You are only going to do 2 things on offense, either run or pass. That is a 50-50 proposition unless it is 3rd and long, then you need to pass. When the defense imposes its will on your offense you do look predictable.Coaches spend 80 hours a week looking at game film. Arm chair QB’s swig beer and complain.

5 Reason not to take the Panthers Lightly!!!
December 30th, 2010

If you read ajc.com blogs everyone on these blogs even the blog host keep saying that Atlanta is going to have the home field advantage like there is not another meaningful game to play.
I heard one commentator say last night that Philly was going into the game last night getting ready for playoff time and the Vikings were going in the game getting ready for a tee time. We all know how that turn out. All Atlanta was so cocky saying the Saints couldn’t come in and beat the Falcons in their house and that didn’t workout.
Atlanta Falcons Beware!!!!!
Do really think that the Panthers are just going to lie down?
5 Reason the Panthers could come in and beat the Falcons
1) Its going to be John Fox’s last game. Teams either play their hearts out for their coach or the give up on him. I don’t think many of the players for the Panthers would want to give up on Fox. They would want to their best to send him off with a win.
2) They have nothing to play for so this will be their playoffs or Super Bowl if you will. Everything goes trick plays, fake punts & field goals going for it on forth down etc.
3) John Fox and Sean Payton are good friends. Don’t think there is not a phone call that’s going to take place sometime this week between the two. Believe me Fox is going to do whatever he can to help Payton secure home field. Think about this If the Saints D/C Greg Williams gets another chance at being a head coach this year don’t be surprise to see Fox as the Saints D/C next year if Williams is gone and Fox does not get a head coach offer.
4) The Panthers ran for 212 yards last time and kept the close in the first half. Also the Falcons didn’t look like world beaters.but they pulled away at the end. This time if the Panther give them a game the Falcons nerves will start to come into play because they have something to play for and the Panther will be loose because everyone expected them to lose in the first place.
5) Most of all the Falcons are coming off a very emotional loss and a short week (6 days) Even if the Falcons had won I believe this was going to be a lot tougher than everyone thinks because of the emotions of the Saints game. Than look at the Panthers they played the Thursday night game (10 days of rest) Everyone was complaining because the schedule had the Falcons playing the Panthers twice in four games. But when you take in consideration how they have to play the Panthers the league did the Falcons no favors. Falcon play Saints emotoinal game than short ( lose on day of rest and prep) The Panther extra days to prep to go balls to the walls for Fox’s last hoorah.
I am not saying its going to happen but if it does remember what I am saying and why the Panther won.

in the playoffs, the falcons will show up and blow out new orleans—mark it down. they took it easy the other night, since they have home field locked up. Atl v. NE in the super bowl—falcons win by 6.

Perhaps the Falcons took the Saints as lightly as Mark Bradley did. Maybe they read your article saying Philly and Michael Vick were the only team they had to worry about. Maybe they chose to disregard the defending Super Bowl champs, who are now healthy again essentially for the first time all season. Maybe they thought the Saints would miss a 29 yard field goal to win the game again. Somehow I think the Falcons are too smart for that, they were just outplayed in an extremely hard-fought, physical football game. Sadly, I think only Mark Bardley is stupid enough to disregard the defensing Super Bowl champs who are now playing their best football of the year.

Our Falcons will be fine. Kudos to the organization that has established a blueprint for success based on the Patriots system. Who would have ever expected that this franchise would be sitting at 12-3 after the Petrino/Vick debacle three years ago. Stay the course-the true fans appreciate it!

acorn3332, NO it does not count as a great win. BUT it was a win and I will take it. However, I have never said that we kicked the Saints @ss. But many Saints fans on here seem to think their team blew the Falcons out of the building with their high scoring offense. THEY DIDN’T. Every game between the Falcons and Saints over the last few years have been very close. Yes I know, the Saints have beaten Falcons more here lately, but none have been a beat down as Saints fan claim. That was my point.

Oh, and acorn3332, maybe it’s time you used some FEMA money and bought a new calculator. Last time I checked, a TD by the defense counts 7 (6 for score and 1 for extra pt., just in case that’s too hard for you) which is just as good as 7 by the offense. So your 10 point swing is a mute point.

If they continue to run Turner up the middle on first and second down when they are obviously keying on him, it will ONE AND DONE for the Falcons. The offensive coordinator does not ADAPT to the situation. He plods along with total disregard for what the defense is doing. This strategy will NOT work in the playoffs.

The Falcons should NOT have lost this game. They lost because Mularkey will NOT change his play calling to adapt to the defense. It’s like a guy running into a brick wall and then getting up and running into again. It’s shear madness and stubborness. Michael Turner either works or he doesn’t. They were KEYING on him. Does this moron know the meaning of the word KEYING? Mularkey should have taken advantage of the shift and faked the ball to Turner. I assure you at least THREE Aints were following him on every play.
