This remains the highlight of Caleb King's UGA career. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
Caleb King won’t play in the Liberty Bowl due to academic concerns, which means the Georgia tailback will complete 2010 having missed five games three different ways — two with an injury, two more due to suspension for failing to appear in court regarding a speeding ticket and now this latest suspension, incurred for missing at least five “academic-related appointments.”
Caleb King, it would seem, isn’t particularly skilled at showing up. He needs to remedy that. Because it’s clear even the endless patience of Mark Richt is nearing its end. Speaking of King, Richt told reporters in Memphis on Sunday: “We’ve played some games without him before, and we’ll do it again.”
It’s not as if King has been indispensable: He has had two 100-yard rushing games in three seasons. The first was his 166-yard showing against Georgia Tech in 2009 on a night when Washaun Ealey gained 183. This season King gained 100 yards at Colorado on a night that will be remember for his strange spin-around fumble at game’s end.
It has been a while now since King caused a stir by leaving Parkview High to play his senior season at Greater Atlanta Christian. He was a big deal then — the No. 1 player in Georgia who was bound for UGA. He hasn’t been nearly as big a deal since, and his time’s almost up. He’ll turn 23 next month. He needs to start showing up.

Glad to hear you finally admit it. Glad you AH’s no longer think of yourself as a BCS bowl or championship caliber program.

Bobo does waste RB talent, no doubt. Ealey & King would both be Heisman contenders if they played for SPurrier or Bama.

Jarvis Auburn has Engineering and it is not a member of the AAU. You can add Bama, USC, UT, Kentucky, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miss St., and LSU that all have engineering and Medical school that are not members of the AAU. So, now UGA gets Engineering and Medicine and you really think the AAU will come knocking on UGA’s door? 2 of 12 SEC schools are members and it looks like UGA is 1 of 12 schools that didn’t have Medical school or Engineering. HAHAH sounds like UGA was dumb not to start that stuff earlier. Well, Truthfully I think the State of Georgia did it right buy havein different colleges do different things. Why should the taxpayers have to pay for redundant programs of study at different schools? Tech is Great at what it does. Medical College of GA is good at what it does plus we have Emory as a privite school. Why does UGA need to reinvent the wheel other than to try to Stroke Politicans egos that went to UGA?

WTF are you people talking about!?
Are we talking about the SAME Caleb King that isn’t strong enough to run through an arm tackle?
Heisman trophy winners generally play a full season. Caleb does not. My money is on at least one game next year missed because of suspension.

I love how Tech thinks 2.5 down seasons and UGA has been demoted to play in Conference USA for the rest of time.
Yes, UGA still is a BCS calibar program. We have the resources, and MONEY to succeed for a LONG LONG time. But in college football, every program goes through waves of ups and downs.
I am pretty sure Penn State will once again be good, Michigan is going nowhere, Texas will be ranked in the near future, and UGA will play better football VERY soon.
The fact that Tech fans think if UGA does not win a National CHampionship every year, they are a disappointment, is a true compliment to the program.
Thanks Nerds!!!
You guys work on that State Championship thing, and we will continue to figure out this National thing.

King reminds me of Eric Dickerson, can just gallop down the field effortlessly, like the 75 yard score aganst Tech, can also work well as a receiver out of the backfield. I havn’t seen a better RB pass blocker, the guy just crushers rushers.

Kyle, I agree, but Ealey is teetering and we have no other SEC proven RB’s on campus.
We red shirted a guy this year, but that’s it. I’d like to see him back, after punishment ( remember, some of Tech’s players are sitting out a half today, wow). suspend him for Boise State next year in the dome.

still, I’ve already answered your last question. We don’t have enough engineers in this state.
And I know this pains you to hear, but UGA is consistently rated as a top 20 public school in the country. I will give you that Tech is a top 10, and a better school, but UGA is no slouch.
The University of Georgia does almost everything it ventures into pretty well. (I credit this to the support it receives monetarily.)
What makes you think that it will be unsuccessful at it’s two newest programs?
We’re all unsuccessful drunks? Even both US Sentors and the last 5 governors?

Hall just graduated with a Civil engineering degree. Bedford was a WALK-ON that earned a scholarship too.
LawDawg the kids said he wanted a life outside the lab an class work. He stated it would be easier at UGA. I am not putting words into his mouth. He said it would be easier at UGA and he would not have to be studying all the time or in the lab. WHY? How will it be easier to Party at UGA if the work is equal to the work at Tech? Answer is the work at UGA will have to be easier or the kids will be 2.0 gpa engineers because they wanted to party over studying. The math and phyics don’t get easier by not being in the lab.

Mark, this comment is so far down the line, you may never read it.
I agree that Caleb King needs to man up. I agree that he has some serious character flaws that hurt his team. His personal irresponsibility is tiresome and he is just about out of second chances. But I do not think a major newspaper columnist like yourself should hold up an amatuer athlete to public ridicule, even one who goes to Ga. Tech. A pro athlete accepts public scrutiny because he plays sports for a living, a college athlete does not. Even though he is being paid with a college education, we should let his coaches reprimand and punish him. Caleb King needs to change for the better and I hope the UGA staff gets through to him. Think about it , Mark.

There was one? I posted during the week of the GT v UGA game. All the majors for UGA and GT players. Tech has many MGT majors, but there are many Engineers too. not just 1 or 2.
Goto the http://www.ramblinwreck.com and check the players Bios before you run your mouth. Check http://www.georgiadogs.com and do the same, then you will understand the JOKE of UGA student ATHLETE compared to Tech.
