Are you stunned by Georgia Tech’s loss at Siena? Me, neither

This marks the third time in 11 seasons Georgia Tech has lost five non-conference games before Christmas under Paul Hewitt. This is significant because Tech under Hewitt has only once done better than 8-8 in ACC play.

Simple math: Five non-league losses plus eight conference losses plus another in the ACC tournament — the Jackets have never won that event under Hewitt — and you’ve got 14. Fourteen is too many to get a team into the NCAA field. (Yeah, I know the field has expanded this season — by three. Same difference.) And Hewitt has said he believes this team is good enough to be an NCAA team.

More history: The two other times Tech under Hewitt has lost five non-league games before Christmas, it hasn’t just missed the NCAA — it has finished with a losing record. (The Jackets were 15-16 in 2000-2001, 15-17 in 2007-2008.) Should Tech have a losing season in 2010-2011, that would make three in the past four tries. That would be enough under ordinary circumstances to find a new coach, but the circumstances at the Flats aren’t ordinary. Hewitt has that perpetual rollover and his $7 million buyout.

On Wednesday the Jackets lost at Siena, where Hewitt used to coach. The Associated Press used the word “stun” to describe what the Saints had done to Tech, but why should anybody be stunned? Tech’s first loss of the season was by 17 points at Kennesaw State, which has gone 0-9 since. Its third loss came by 21 points at Northwestern, which just lost to St. John’s, which was so desperate for a new coach it spoke with Hewitt in March. (Against Tech, Northwestern scored 55 points in the first 20 minutes.)

Now Siena. The Saints played a zone and dared Tech to shoot from the perimeter, something the Jackets had done well in a loss against Syracuse, which plays the nation’s best zone. Tech made eight second-half baskets against Siena, only three of them on jump shots. When you have a team laden with guards, you should be able to make jump shots. Not this night, alas.

Oh, and here’s the really depressing part: Siena’s second-leading scorer on the season didn’t play (bad ankle), and its leading scorer played sick. (Also hurt. Ryan Rossiter caught an elbow in the first half. Still scored 19 points.) And while there have been good Siena teams in years past — the Saints have reached the past three NCAA tournaments — this wouldn’t appear to be one. The victory improved the Saints’ record to 4-6.

As for Tech, it was Loss No. 5 against a schedule that hasn’t been terribly imposing. The Jackets have faced one ranked opponent. The aggregate record of the six teams they’ve beaten is 35-39. Only one ACC team has lost as many as five games already, and at least Wake Forest has the excuse of playing under a new coach. Tech, as we know, is working under the same coach.

No, I’m not stunned and this way beyond embarrassing. I went to Tech in the late 80s when national rankings and national following were common. Now, we can’t even get a recap on a game on ESPN.com because there is no interest. The program is in the worst shape since before Cremins took over.

We know that the guys on the tech team are athletes, but the shooting must improve for them to be relevant. Spend a practice just shooting, shooting tired afterw wind sprints, and shooting with pressure (have Nate Hicks / Daniel Miller take turns rushing a shooter). Don’t leave the gym until you hit 10/15 from 18 ft. With just a few more shots falling, they win. Also, what was up with the FT disparity last night (Sienna 27 to Tech 5)? Was the fouling really that lopsided?

I hope Tech loses every game but why in the world would the AD not invoke whatever clause needs to be invoked to start the clock on a seperation at a reasonable price? I get the feeling the team senses the inability of the coach to build a cohesive team. It’s too bad the program has degenerated to where it is (remember they once played for the National Championship). Hewitt won’t leave under his own accord because of the millions of dollars he would lose, and the probability he won’t get a major school head coaching job again.

The Grinch, you are correct with regards to our AD. At the time, it was Dave Brane, who defended Chan Gailey by telling the fan base “Georgia Tech can win nine or 10 games. They will never do that consistently. That’s my feeling … because of the type of program this is.”

Thankfully, DB is gone and Dan Radakovich is the new AD. The problem is, he left behind Paul Hewitt’s $7 Million contract. We simply don’t have $7,000,000 to give a basketball coach who cannot coach. This will require a magician, I believe.

Hey Techies,

We can make you Nerds a deal. You need $7M to buy out the Wizard of Techwood’s lifetime contract correct? Just so happens, we make about that in a SINGLE home football game.

So if you sign on the dotted line, and agree to bring your JV football team to Athens to play Clean Old Fashioned Hate for the next 5 years, we will give you the $7M you need, while we keep the other $28M.

This will not only bennefit our pockets (which are deeper than yours will EVER be already), it will also protect our players and fans from having to travel to that ghetto you call a “campus” and avoid these types of people that surround it…. http://www.ajc.com/news/gwinnett/armed-robbers-bypass-georgia-785815.html

In addition, you will not get any ticket allotment for these games. I am sure the 200-300 fans(sic) of yours that would attend wil be disappointed, but thats’s just business.

That’s been my question. I understand it’s hard to justify spending $7M to tell a coach to go away, especially in this economy, but I can’t believe Hewitt’s going to be here until he retires, so putting it off is just delaying the inevitable. In the meantime, team support and revenue are going down the toilet. A savvy hiring to replace Hewitt would bring a number of fans back to the Thrillerdome, and a successful season or two under a new coach would pack the place.

I can’t believe DRad would risk opening the new stadium with a bunch of empty seats. Right now, there’s enough fans who care about Tech basketball to raise a call for Hewitt’s head. If Radakovich keeps putting this off, the new coach might have to build a fan base basically from scratch.

Izzo said he told his team their performance was embarrassing.

That’s the really disappointing thing and the reason I don’t really expect things to get better under Hewitt. When our football team struggled this season, CPJ said he was disappointed and basically called out his team, at least specific units, saying they weren’t playing as well as they should. I’ve also heard rumors that the money *is* there, but a couple of things change the timing. First, I believe the CG buyout ends after next year so that money is freed up. Second, we may want to bring a new guy in with the new building changes so that would be after next year as well.

However, if the dome end up empty most of the year (which is almost guaranteed) something might have to be done sooner rather than later.

few things:

First:

Next time you talk with Hewitt, you should ask him more bluntly:

“Coach, are DELIBERATELY trying to get yourslef fired?”

Second:

Bradley, try putting your imagination to work on figuring out how GT can either:
A) Make Hewitt WANT to leave; or
B) Develop a way to generate the needed $7 Million to buy Hewitt out.

IMHO, the longer Hewitt stays under the current “dubious” circumstancs,
the WORSE his professional reputation in collegiate sports will get.

Who gave Hewitt that contract? Either that was plain stupid or there is corruption in the athletics department.

Hewitt is quoted as saying, “I thought we had looks and couldn’t make them. It’s just one of those things.” This sounds like he has given up and doesn’t really expect to win. His current approach to Tech basketball is to recruit a badly imbalanced team, to fail to “coach it up”, and then say that a loss to what should be a clearly inferior program is “Just one of those things.” This situation has gone from aggrevain, to embarassing, to just plain sad. I is bad enough that the man cannot coach, it is worse that he continues to take money he doesn’ earn on he merits of his coaching, and it is inexcusable that he holds the program as a hostage for the totally unrealistic buy out included in his contract by the misguided David Braine. Mr. Hewitt, do the honorable thing and take a reasonable payoff and get out of town.

Yet another sad characteristic of Paul Hewitt’s tenure at Georgia Tech is that we’re never surprised when we lose to anybody. When your teams are fundamentally unsound and undisciplined you can lose to anybody at anytime. So, we’re not only not surprised, we’re actually used to it, and that is very sad indeed for a once-proud program. Are you listening, DRad? I didn’t think so….

realist,

I thought about the new coach coming with the new building, but there’s a good chance changing coaches will mess with recruiting, and it will likely take a little bit of time for the new guy to get the program in a new direction. Why open the new stadium at the beginning of that transition? Why not start that transition at least at the end of the season and give the new guy a year to build his team so the first year in the new arena has a better chance of being a successful one?

RDU = Raleigh-Durham, which is the name of the airport in that area, and RDU is the airport code, so the area is known by both. Also known as RTP or Research Triangle Park, because the area around Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill is fertile ground for research companies. Must have been an unusual slow sports day Mark! How is this news??? We all know that Hewitt should have been fired several years ago. Most felt he was surely gone last year but the nature of his “Golden Contract” simply will not allow Tech to part with him. Tech is not loaded with cash like UGA and simply can’t afford to pay the 5 million needed to buy him out. This did not happen, Hewitt has shown his stubborness year after year about bringing in coaching help. @UGA Athletic Department: You do realize the AD is an independent entity from the University? Of course you don’t, you’re a knuckle dragging neanderthal that doesn’t realize GT has over $1 billion (that’s 1000 million) of operating funds in its endowment, as where lowly UGA has less than $500 million. GT also maintains an investment fund of over $10 billion for new construction, recruitment of staff, etc., and poor (literally) UGA’s investment fund in under $200 million. By any metric you can find, the pocket books are not comparable. Our AD chooses not to spend the $7 million because it’s a waste. That’s the kind of financial sense that garners great GT a war chest that UGA couldn’t build even with a 100 year head start.

GT is a team of “shooters” if we aren’t knocking down jumpers we aren’t gonna win. So, my coaching would be play the ones hitting the shots, not play the guy with a memorable last name or upperclassmen.

Hewitt continues to drag the Tech basketball program down and Tech continues to drag their feet on getting rid of him. Every year Tech waits to act means they are three years from results. It will now be AT LEAST 2012 before they compete at the top levels…wait another year and 2013. Any wonder why I don’t go to Tech games anymore??

You guys forget Hewitt is at a disadvantage trying to recruit at Tech. Do you realize how hard it is to find chemical engineers that are also good basketball players?

Seriously, the players he signs must be more interested in hitting on the hot chicks around the Atlanta Universities, than winning basketball games. Why else would they sign with Tech?

1) Fire DRad. He did not hire Hewitt or do his contract, but he hasn’t fired him yet.

2) Do like Dan Synder (Redskin’s owner) did to Jim Zorn – take away his power. That is, give an assistant coach the ability to make the starting lineup and subsitute players and don’t let Hewitt do it. Make it so embarassing to him that maybe GT and PH can come to an agreement over the buyout.

3) Bring back Wack Hyder, but please not Dwane Morrison.

Money is not the issue here UGA Athletic Department, if it was Tech wouldn’t be spending over $52MM to upgrade athletic facilities including a new indoor football facility. You’re obviously ignorant to endowment funds of the two schools. If UGA should write one of those $7MM checks to build their own indoor football facility, oh yeah, they’ve been trying to raise monies for that the last decade.

Hewitt can’t beat the team he came from,Siena. He probably can’t beat the team of the coach he replaced after Cremins was fired, College of Charleston, and Hewitt is playing on the Bobby Cremins floor at Tech, which may be in competition pretty soon with a floor in Charleston. Cremin’s team may very well go to the NCAA this year as the odds on favorite to win the Southern Conference at the moment, not to add, wins in the last year against UNC, Maryland and South Carolina. If so he won’t use up one of the three new positions, since there was always a position for the Southern Conference team, and Hewitt can’t even get one of those. Plus Charleston loves Bobby, they have face mask all through the stands, of the happy Irishman, the crowd is going crazy. We got the second wife that turned out to get fat and have a drinking problem, Charleston is the nerd in high school that ended up with your old wife the homecoming queen, moving in next door to rub it in. Merry Christmas.

Some of this is on Hewitt, but most of it results from the implosion of basketball caused by the early-to-NBA farce that turns colleges into farm teams for the NBA – a place where they do not play defense and the product is so abysmally boring that I can’t get through an entire game. Corporate interests basically ruin everything they touch – the NCAA and NASCAR have a lot of blood on their hands. (Make no mistake, the NCAA is a corporation, in action if not in fact.) Lately I find myself thinking the same way about NCAA football – that’s got a lot of life in it yet but the signs of decline are already clear.

If you had told me 20 years ago that I’d go an entire year, much less a decade, without watching a single Indy or NASCAR race, I’d have asked for some of your stash. I haven’t seen a NASCAR race since the BD era (Before Dale). Restrictor plates destroyed it. I haven’t seen a single NCAA basketball game this year – haven’t read a stat, haven’t given a fig, and as Tech grad, find it hard to believe that I do not care at all what becomes of the basketball team. I’m having more and more trouble caring about the football team as well – and football is my religion. I’m just plain sick of the spoiled kids who play these sports, and I’m sick of the way they play the games. It’s just a massive yawn.

Cliff Warren, former assistant to Hewitt, just beat Florida with his Jacksonville team.

What was the Tech record while Warren was still at tech?

What has the record been since he left?

Was Warren also at Siena with Hewitt, where hewitt had success?

As others have said in earlier comments, it seems that Warren was the difference maker.

It wont necessarily take 3 years to re-build the program. Ucf brought in a new coach this year that was an assistant to Billy Donovan. He took a big man on a transfer and his first recruiting class and already has them in the top 25 with wins over Florida and Miami. He was able to coach up the existing talent. Gt is still an attractive coaching job, but its losing its shine on recruiting.

Ross, the problem with blaming this on kids going to the NBA early is there’s still plenty of quality college basketball programs in the country. It has changed the landscape of college basketball, though, and I’m not sure if Hewitt just hasn’t been able to adjust or if he just wasn’t that good to begin with.

I’m hoping that one of the hard core GT fans can confirm something for me. I THINK (really emphasize it) that I remember reading a quote attributed to Hewitt to the effect that his job wasn’t to win basketball games at Tech, but to provide an avenue for black players to get to the NBA. (If accurate that might help to explain why white BB players need not apply.)

If that is essentially correct, then surely his contract with GT would not include this requirement, but would in fact call for him to win basketball games.

So…true recollection or are my advanced years finally starting to play tricks with my memory? TIA.

Here is the $7 million question:

In Radakovich’s mind, would it be worse to bring in a new coach next year when we would be playing a limited home schedule at Phillips and/or Gwinnett arena, or to stick with Hewitt one more year after this and open our new arena with a new coach? The answer is based on money and who will be available at those times. Either way, my hope is that when Radakovich makes the move, it will be to bring in someone he thinks is special and not just to get rid of Hewitt. This will be a signature hire for him, and I think he will take the longer term view and get it right.

What I'm I missing here

6:02 pm

I don’t understand something which ( I believe) has not been brought up in the K’s of comments made here. Could somebody please explain to me why we are “stuck” with Hewitt forever since we can’t afford the $7M payout. Why don’t we simply continue to pay his salary (whatever that is) and make him irrelevant as far as coaching the BB program is concerned. Why not bring in an “assistant” coach who would actually coach the team and let Hewitt recruit or hand out towels during timeouts. If coaching the team is taken away from him, he becomes the laughing stock of the NCAA BB program and (if he has any shame at all) would soon make arrangements to a compromise cancellation of his contract.
I’ve seen this method applied in business circles and it works.

@Ken: I won’t dispute your numbers, as it looks like you know what you’re writing of. However, your statement that the AD won’t spend the $7M because “it’s a waste” bears another look, IMO (and the opinion of several GT fans on this blog). After all, as one GT poster said: You’re going to pay him the $7M one way or the other: Coaching or not coaching. There are those who think that paying him to coach is the real waste.

Since I’m a UGA grad I’d just as soon see CPH stay forever, so it matters not to me. But if you’re happy with CPH it would seem that you’re in the minority right now.

Unbelievable. I remember the day when I looked forward to Tech basketball as much as football. My wife and I watched Tech play in the 1st round of the NCAA back in 93 when she had just delivered our 1st child less than 24 hrs. earlier. When we went to the Final 4, Hewitt had atheletes that did not need coaching. Since then what have we done. Why watch or care?

The Debate is Over

December 23rd, 2010
6:59 pm

Folks, DRad I am sure knows what he has to do. The firing of Hewitt is not going to cost Tech $7 million. It’s going to coast $14 million plus. We are going to have to get rid of Hewitt, then hire another coach to replace him. We are going to have to find a young up and coming assistant and then let him grow into the job. Or, we are going to have to find some blue hair, who would work for less than market value.

The Bottom Line: We, meaning Tech fans are going to have to come out of our pockets with the duckets to make this work. So instead of complaining to DRad, pledge to DRAD that you will do this.

I think DRad is hoping Hewitt can turn this around. But if he can’t, he is a goner.

But I admit, at this writing, Hewitt is stealing money from Tech.

When Hewitt first came to Tech and quickly reached the final 4 Braine chose to tie him up long term rather than let him move on to a more prestigous program. Unfortunately the trip to the final 4 was more a reflection of the players onthat team rather than Hewitt’s coaching. Since then the body of evidence strongly suggests that Hewitt is overmatched in the ACC as a coach, is losing his ability as a recruiter and has the team on a rapidly acceperating downward spiral. There is absolutely no reason to believe that Hewitt can turn the program around and I would challenge any reader of this blog to offer such reason. DRad must realize this and hopefully is just biding his time before cutting Hewitt loose, biting the buy out bullet, and starting a search for a real coach, capable of rebuilding the Tech basketball program to respectability instead of remaining the laughing stock that it has become.

I’m just stunned they beat my Spiders. Only thing I can figure is our guys got distracted by the Bahamas surroundings. At the end of the year, I’m fairly certain that Richmond’s going to look back and see that as one of its worst losses of the season.

This isn’t surprising at all either. With their talent, Tech manages to win 1 or 2 games each year that they have no business winning based on who they are losing to. It’s clear that Hewitt should have been fired after last year. It was clear before last year too, but he needed to prove his ineptness with an NBA front line.
