Update: Three more Tech players suspended – for a half

Update: Georgia Tech announced Sunday that three more players — defensive Anthony Egbuniwe and defensive backs Michael Peterson and Louis Young — has been suspended for the first half of Monday’s Independence Bowl. They broke curfew in Shreveport, which I believe trumps John Dewberry’s curfew-breaking in Birmingham in 1985 for sheer ingenuity.
It’s that festive time of the year when Georgia Tech lets us know which of its players won’t be playing in a bowl game. The Jackets arrived in scenic Shreveport on Thursday, just in time to offer the following release:
Shreveport, La. – Georgia Tech announced today that four football players, including two who have already earned their undergraduate degrees, will not play in Monday’s AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl because of various academic issues.
Senior defensive end Robert Hall and senior linebacker Anthony Barnes are ineligible to compete in the game against Air Force under NCAA academic guidelines. Sophomore wide receiver Stephen Hill and senior safety Mario Edwards are both ineligible for not meeting Georgia Tech academic requirements.
Of the four players, Edwards and Hill were listed as starters on the Yellow Jackets’ most recent depth chart.
A few questions: How can you earn your degree and still be academically ineligible? Has any Jacket had a more disappointing season than Hill, who was touted as the next Demaryius Thomas but who hasn’t played well and now won’t play in the bowl game at all?
There’s a time-honored Jacket tradition of players getting docked for the postseason. Usually it’s the quarterback: John Dewberry was suspended for the All-American Bowl in 1985 for breaking curfew in Birmingham, which is tough to do, and in 2006 Reggie Ball was declared ineligible for the Gator Bowl, which brought a strange career to its inevitably strange end.
These latest suspensions constitute just another installment in an ongoing Tech saga. On the bright side, the Tech Four won’t be remembered as the most egregious college football development of Dec. 23, 2010. That dishonor belongs to five Ohio State Buckeyes, chief among them quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who were suspended for five games of the 2011 season — though not for the Sugar Bowl — for NCAA violations that include receiving improper benefits from …

Of the four player really the only one that hurts Tech is Robert Hall. He wasn’t a starter( was last year until injury) but was getting significant minutes in the d-line rotation and IMO when the line consisted of him, Cross and Barnes was much better against the run. Bout the only thing Stephen Hill had a chance of catching in Sherevport was the FLU.

That is who should have to answer for not monitoring the progress of Hill and Edwards..although the bigger disgrace will always be when the Chan Gailey bunch allowed QB Reggie Ball to miss the Gator bowl game his senior year, what a shame that was. Chan was too busy trying to get a job in the NFL so glad he was canned.

I figure Hewitt will get at least 4 more during the course of this season. D Rad will earn 1 or 2 more for not taking the Maryland AD’s lead and pulling the trigger a la Friedgen. Danny Hall will somehow draw your negative pen at least once. The question is, will next year’s football team Constitute (no pun intended) at least 3 or 4 hatchet jobs? I’ll take the over.

Well, I get it that two of them “exhausted” their eligibility. What I don’t get is: isn’t this bowl game part of the 2010 season, and not of the 2011 season? I find that very odd, to punish with ineligibility two guys who did what “scholar athletes” — a fraudulent NCAA term if ever uttered — are supposed to do but frequently do not: graduate.

Actually, Eddie McAshan wasn’t just suspended for the 1972 Liberty Bowl. He was suspended for the Georgia game, too. (He’d skipped a practice because his request for extra tickets to the game in Sanford Stadium was denied.)

According to Espn the Ncaa said that bowl game and champ. games fall under different rules than the reg. season games and the Ncaa says they make rulings on them in case by case basis. Their reasoning for letting them play was that the players thought it was their property and they thought they could sell it and the team and university didn’t benifit from the sell of the items. So what happened? Did UGA get a kickback on the AJ Green jersey or something?

it must appall you Mark, having been on the sports scene for 30 plus years to see how college football has changed. the younger folks don’t recall anything about being able to sneak into Sanford stadium and sit on the grass, or watching from the railroad tracks or bridge. There are now even adverts in the Men’s rooms. All of this talk about Eddie McAshan brings me back to one of the best Tech-UGA games ever on Thanksgiving night in 1971. I was 16 years old and remember that UGA had only lost to Auburn and the great Pat Sullivan, who probably won the Heisman based on his perfomance against us. Tech was 6-3 at the time and McAshan got Tech out to a quick 14-0 lead before we woke up. Tech really dominated that game until the fourth quarter where they had a 24-21 lead and we won in the last minute with a goal line run by Jimmy Poulus. Same day as the great Oklahoma-Nebraska game won by Nebraska 35-31. The two greatest games of college football came on that day in November of 1971 and I am 56 years old now.

The secret is to have a nine person compliance organization, and fail to properly educate the players as to the rules. Ohio State threw themselves on the sword to get the NCAA to allow their players to play in the Bowl. Oh yeah, AD Smith said the athletes did it because they needed money. When asked about the discounted or free tattoos, he tried to laugh that off. At the end of the press conference, he joked about putting a tattoo artist in the athletic building so as to avoid future issues. He needs to understand that the tattoos need to be provided to the entire student body, or it will be an improper benefit to his athletes. If in doubt, maybe he should hire a different nine people for his compliance team, and then ask for guidance.
UGA has suspended players this year that were not required to be suspended by the NCAA. Ask King and King (running back and receiver) for two examples.
I am curious how someone can graduate and not be academically eligible. Any chance of an explanation that doesn’t violate these players rghts? I am a dawg fan but I will be pulling for Tech Monday.

@Dirty Jacket: Don’t know if UGA has ever suspended a player who met NCAA qualifications, but they have denied admission to such players in the past. Some high profile kid a couple of years ago who was rejected by Adams, but his name escapes me. Think he went on to enroll at Arkansas.
Don’t know about MB’s allegedly anti-Tech bias. He was one of those writers who proclaimed CPJ the greatest coach in history just a couple of years ago. Seems to me he’s a bit hyperbolic on both sides of the fence.

Hall and Barnes were redshirt seniors and only needed so many hours to graduate and had to take extra hours to meet NCAA eligability rules, and likely didn’t pass those classes, or something to that effect.
Hill and Edwards didn’t meet GEORGIA TECH’S requirements, meaning they probably met NCAA requirements, but Tech holds their athletes to higher standards, so they have to sit.

I think it’s safe to say that December 23rd, 2010 is the day that Tech athletic academics have been EXPOSED.
I wouldn’t doubt it if an investigation follows, and serious probation is handed down.

It’s like getting a 2.0 at an ivy league school compared to a 3.5 at north georgia. I’m not calling out any school or saying tech is ivy league. This isn’t trying to brag on tech’s academics, I’m just explaining it like how you asked.
I hope your job centers around monitoring the ajc blogs. If it does then you must earn very well. If not, well thats your loss.
Also, if the only thing that matters is uga football because we’re in the south, then I surely hope you are a football coach. If you’re not, then you need to set your priorities because you’re not living to your potential as a human being.

Dude, don’t kid yourself. Every school has joke classes (i.e. freshman seminars) that athletes take. On top of that, athletes get free tutoring and also “advantageous” grading from professors. The announcement on the 4 GT players being inelgibible for the bowl game is a little strange and certainly incomplete. There are 2 players who have graduated who aren’t eligible because they have failed to meet NCAA requirements. Then there are 2 players who are ineligible because they failed to meet GT academic standards. As far as the second pair are concerned – what does “failing to meet GT academic requirements” mean? Are they elgible per the NCAA rules?
For the graduates, who knows which NCAA requirements they have not met. I haven’t read anything about them being in graduate school so it is likely that they were taking the minimum hours (NCAA requires 6 completed) and blew a class off – can’t say I blame them. Of course, if they were playing in the Sugar Bowl they could have sold their 2010 Orange Bowl jerseys and been told that they were eligible for Shreveport but had to sit out the first 5 games of 2011.

Mark: In this case, I do not think the suspensions of these four GT players (except maybe Edwards) will have a significant impact on the game. Unless Air Force just falls apart, they are the better team and should win regardless of the suspensions. Tech is not a good team and really does not deserve to be in any bowl game.

OHIO STATE: When did the players actually sell those items? It is curious we are just finding out about it. Did it just happen? Mark May stated on ESPN that if these had been SEC players instead of Big Ten– all five players would NOT play in the upcoming Sugar Bowl. May called the Big Ten the NCAA’s “sacred cow.” He is 100% correct!
Remember when Maurice Clarett flunked (African-American Studies,) with a zero on the mid-term? Clarett was given a “special” make-up exam at the end of the semester, (the only student in the class who got a do-over,) then played against Miami in the national championship game and helped OSU win.
Suspending these five for Akron, Toledo, and Colorado means nothing– OSU will breeze in those. Only Miami and Michigan State are on the table– IF these guys even bother to return to Columbus next fall. Having the coach and AD make excuses for the five is insulting: had they not heard of A. J. Speaking of Dewberry, follow his career after his playing days and compare it to the players getting D.U.I s the last couple of years in Athens. It might explain a little about this academic ineligibility at Tech compared to other schools. The reason so many players like AJ Green think they’re playing for free is they have no appreciation of an education and those notions are certainly not discouraged once they arrive in Athens. I think following these guys careers, if it doesn’t depress you too much, kind of puts the light on what is real here. You do not need the NCAA to tell you garbage in garbage out at far as college students.
Cooper Taylor quit Tech, felt isolated, an odd ball on his own football team. This is a bad sign that Tech may be moving or really has for a while into the same direction of a Georgia. Not too much written about this but the recruiter are using it to their advantage in recruiting against Tech. It is very hard to be an athlete today and be a student. The requirements of an athlete are heavy. Looking at these out of condition Georgia players and lack of skill sets from Tech, I’m not sure I totally buy that but when you are putting functional illiterates into a system and then deciding which one of these are academically eligible, when in truth they probably all are is somewhat humorous.

In less than five minutes from reading this FISH WRAP of an excuse for ‘journalism’, I was able to find out that not only TWO of the players have graduated they simply didn’t have enough hours this semester post graduation to remain eligible. The headline should read GT ACADEMIC ADVISOR IS AN IDIOT. These two gentlemen have graduated from a great school and should be HONORED!! I also found out in less than five minutes the other player missed passing a class by TWO POINTS and WILL GRADUATE next semester. So thats THREE OF THE FOUR who will have graduated from Ga Tech. A few questions: How can you earn your degree and still be academically ineligible?
That is a good question, how can we get that answered?
When I first read it I thought it must have been a misprint but it looks like its just more evidence of how rotten the NCAA is.

Frontman, so basically the NCAA requires more coursework than “The Institute?” But how can this be Techie? We have been told that Georgia Tech is at a competitive disadvantage to the “football factories” because of their supposedly stringent academic requirements. They don’t seem so stringent to me if they don’t even meet the NCAA’s bare minimum requirements. Something is just not adding up here Techie. How difficult can academic life be for a Georgia Tech football player if they can get a degree but still not meet NCAA academic requirements?
You’re not going to be able to spin your way out of this one Techies. All your excuses, myths, and lies have been totally EXPOSED. Its certainly not the first time. Back when you had to vacate all those wins from the O’ Leary era because you were playing a bunch of academically ineligible players you still stuck your heads in the sand and pretended like it never happened. If the players, particularly the ones who have already graduated they would play in the Bowl Game and would be suspended for next season. You have to love the
NCAA. Now if Tech moves to the Big Ten or Pac Ten it won’t have these type of problems.

As a dawg fan myself i have much respect for GT and an academic institute and anyone who tries to take that away is an idiot themselves. That being said, it makes it much harder to keep certain talents and stay in the same recruiting pool as every university. Georgia itself is quality academic university but Tech is tech. Congrats to the two gentlemen who graduated and the other two let down their teammates.

1) The news was released yesterday – not Christmas Eve
2) The academic ineligibility is based on the grades from the Fall semester – finals week ended on 12/17 – grades would only have made it to the AA on Monday at the earliest and it takes a little while to review whether everyone is eligible. UGA still hasn’t announced if there are any eligibility issues with their players.

One of the several excuses for the OSU players is that their families needed the money. Since the NCAA has established that what your family does has no effect on your eligibility, provided you know nothing about it, and you are only breaking the rules if you profit from selling your jersey / ring / etc. there is a simple solution.
Just give your stuff to you parents (preferably autographed) and let them see what they can sell it for – without your knowledge of course.

the issue wrt the two players who already graduated.
they were ineligible because they had not taken the required no of courses to be considered full time students hence they were ineligble.
they were in good standing and had already graduated.
so there were only 2 players who had grade issues.

I wholeheartedly agree. An embarrassment would involve a cover-up or wrongdoing. These players did not take the minimum number of classes AFTER graduating, and the other two slacked off on their studies. I don’t see the embarrassment to GT, but maybe to a few of the players.

And I was sure this year we would at least keep the off-the-field issues down enough to keep the fingers pointed at the players in Athens and everywhere else. Now we got kids that didn’t pass enough hours. Why was it not mentioned that 2 of the Tech players have graduated and simply didn’t have enough hours this semester post graduation to remain eligible? Also the other player is set to graduate next semester. This is a prime example of not reporting the complete story and instead focusing on the negative. Do the research next time.

I heard the Ohio State AD yesterday say in his Presser “These kids were selling their property in order to help their families”….. YEAH RIGHT!!!!

If I recall, UGA appealed AJ’s sentence, to no avail. I hate to take the “eye for an eye” approach, but I would for one be VERY upset if the sentence is reduced to ANYTHING less than 4 games.

I was hoping for a team that competes on a national level, maybe I’m dreaming… Those days of the 50’s were a long time ago… The offense is NOT fine, we have NO blue chip players that want any part of this offense. Good grief, just chart the progress in recruiting from when CPJ started until present… It’s NOT hard to figure out that the trend is DOWN! Regarding the two who graduated; once the s/a graduates with remaining eligibility, they must either be enrolled in a graduate program or in a pursuing a second undergrad degree. So these two, since not in grad school, would have been enrolled in a second undergrad program and would have to be full-time with a minimum of 12 hours. In order to stay eligible, they would have had to pass a minimum of 6 hours, which they obviously didn’t.
Not sure what the issues with the other two s/a’s were. Most likely they were already on ‘warning’ for their academic standing and did not perform better this fall semester, with moved them to probation. But it is a mistake to believe that GT requirements are above and beyond NCAA requirements. That simply is not true.

You are correct – the 4 players did not do what was necessary to maintain eligibility and have paid the price. The 2 graduates in particular should have known better – heck Matt Leinart took one class in his final year (he was a 5th year SR) to maintain his eligibility. The GT program isn’t perfect, but then again no CFB program is perfect.

So a couple of guys didn’t pull grades and a couple graduated – to try to put this in the same light as true infractions by the Ohio State players is deceptive, dishonest and unprofessional and seems to reveal an underlying agenda on your part – it is not an infraction to fail to make grades (unfortunate, but not a breach of NCAA rules) – why not try being a journalist.

It happens every year at Tech. We always have football and basketball players who end up on academic probation. But, it’s not just them, it happens to plenty of regular students also. Tech is a hard school. That’s the thing – there are no cake majors for athletes. They have to put in the academic work like anybody else, and if they do, they get a real (and valuable) degree. 2 of the players had actually already graduated and just didn’t take enough credit hours in the fall to qualify. They were moving on after this semester anyway, so that’s not news. The other two didn’t meet TECH’s standards, not the general NCAA’s. Tech has more stringent requirements for its own athletes than the general ones. The fact that we do have athletes and regular students to NOT make it through Tech academically makes me respect the institution and the ones that do make it even more. It says “You have to earn this; it’s not just given to you. And if you do persevere and earn this degree, you will be better for it.” This country should be more like Tech.
When was the last time a Uga athlete was held out due to an “academic” issue??? Not just Uga, but any of the other football factories?

The reason that Tech players seem to flunk out more than other teams like UGA is – it is hard for a UGA Dawg player to become “academically ineligible” when they take such Dumb-a** majors such as General Studies, PE, Housing (and NO, not construction – but Public Housing, which includes a third of the UGA football team), African-American Studies,Social Studies, Pre-School Majors, Insurance, Recreation Majors, etc. It’s hard to flunk when the vast majority Dawg players take these majors. No such majors at Tech. I know – I am one of those former Dawg athletes who graduated from one of those useless majors where I can’t find a descent job.

The Ohio St suspensions have to be the biggest, most hypocritical of all time. Suspend 5 guys, but not until 9 months from now. Are any of these bozo’s parents. You catch your kid doing something bad enough to warrant punishment, but you don’t levy it, until next year? C’mon man!! What this shows is how powerful the boosters and bcs bozos are. Obviously they don’t care about the kids. That the ohio state players were forced to sell their personal memorebalia is sad enough, but let the fat cats with the private jets and $2000 suits pile it on the ones creating the product. Football players deserve a stipend. The fat cats sucking off the cream, livin large…..gotta go.
