Update: Three more Tech players suspended – for a half

Update: Georgia Tech announced Sunday that three more players — defensive Anthony Egbuniwe and defensive backs Michael Peterson and Louis Young — has been suspended for the first half of Monday’s Independence Bowl. They broke curfew in Shreveport, which I believe trumps John Dewberry’s curfew-breaking in Birmingham in 1985 for sheer ingenuity.

It’s that festive time of the year when Georgia Tech lets us know which of its players won’t be playing in a bowl game. The Jackets arrived in scenic Shreveport on Thursday, just in time to offer the following release:

Shreveport, La. – Georgia Tech announced today that four football players, including two who have already earned their undergraduate degrees, will not play in Monday’s AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl because of various academic issues.

Senior defensive end Robert Hall and senior linebacker Anthony Barnes are ineligible to compete in the game against Air Force under NCAA academic guidelines. Sophomore wide receiver Stephen Hill and senior safety Mario Edwards are both ineligible for not meeting Georgia Tech academic requirements.

Of the four players,  Edwards and Hill were listed as starters on the Yellow Jackets’ most recent depth chart.

A few questions: How can you earn your degree and still be academically ineligible? Has any Jacket had a more disappointing season than Hill, who was touted as the next Demaryius Thomas but who hasn’t played well and now won’t play in the bowl game at all?

There’s a time-honored Jacket tradition of players getting docked for the postseason. Usually it’s the quarterback: John Dewberry was suspended for the All-American Bowl in 1985 for breaking curfew in Birmingham, which is tough to do, and in 2006 Reggie Ball was declared ineligible for the Gator Bowl, which brought a strange career to its inevitably strange end.

These latest suspensions constitute just another installment in an ongoing Tech saga. On the bright side, the Tech Four won’t be remembered as the most egregious college football development of Dec. 23, 2010. That dishonor belongs to five Ohio State Buckeyes, chief among them quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who were suspended for five games of the 2011 season — though not for the Sugar Bowl — for NCAA violations that include receiving improper benefits from …

A tattoo parlor. Seriously.

Pefect ?

Paul Johnson cannot recruit at all

He never has been able to

Your players are QUITTING the team, dropping like gnats

flies

left and right

And, for the # 36 National University – you had four (4) players who signed up for enough classes to play in a bowl game

But all 4 did FLUNKED OFF THE TEAM

Did I mention Georgia tek is 6-6 and will LOSE to be 6-7

Or, that you have LOST every game of the Mark Richt Era 10-Years except 1 game long ago

Or, that you have not won a Major Bowl Game since 1955

# 35 in 1-A wins since 1959

Your program is in shambles and your men’s basketball program, even more so

Bradley you are a disgrace to journalism. You are hired to report facts, not biases. I remember another so called journalist named by a first name of Terrence, who was a racist who always drew the black card. Mark you need to report non biased opinions. You do have talent but unfortunately you throw it all away in your reporting. I come from the old school, Furman Bisher, Jim Mintor and the staff that wrote articles from the old journal and constitution, that meant something based on facts. Your reporting skills are skillful, but sorry to say are very biased. I go back to Bobby Dodd, and Wally Butts. I doubt that you have ever heard or appreciate the contributions these guys made to these great schools in Georgia.
Fact is, you just cannot get rid of your love for UGA and it is really sad, for so called professional to exhibit so much hate for a school that you really don’t know anything about.

Georgia tek played the # 99 Official NCAA Strength of Schedule this season.

You won 6 games and lost 6 games

We beat you

And, yes, you have won 1 game of the 10 in the Mark Richt 10-Year Era. Your win was not this season, nor was it last season.

Georgia tek has not won a Major Bowl Game since 1955.

Georgia tek is # 35 in 1-A wins since 1959.

Georgia tek has 6 national championships by the SAME POLLS who have Georgia national champions 6 times, too – only Georgia has an AP Poll National Championship in football.

Georgia tek has NEVER won a national championship in the Final AP Poll, NEVER.

Georgia has.

And, we have 6 national championships in football in the SAME DAMN POLLS who have Georgia tek ranked with 6 national championships in football.

“A Tradition Continues” Seriously Mark???

You had to go back 5 years – Reggie Ball

And you had to go waaay back 25 years – John Dewberry

Quite a stretch Mark, “ongoing Tech saga” – if there was any merit to this story, one could dismiss your hatred for all things Georgia Tech.

Now if you want to talk tradition. why not write a column on Kentucky’s basketball history of scandals and how John Calipari is adding to that saga.

And if we really want to stretch the saga let’s talk about Adolph Rupp’s 1952-1953 basketball season???? That would be the great innovator “Baron of the Blue Grass”, “Man in the Brown Suit” introducing college sports to something new “The Death Penalty”. That would be tradition.

So a couple of guys didn’t pull grades and a couple graduated – to try to put this in the same light as true infractions by the Ohio State players is deceptive, dishonest and unprofessional and seems to reveal an underlying agenda on your part – it is not an infraction to fail to make grades (unfortunate, but not a breach of NCAA rules) – why not try being a journalist.

It happens every year at Tech. We always have football and basketball players who end up on academic probation. But, it’s not just them, it happens to plenty of regular students also. Tech is a hard school. That’s the thing – there are no cake majors for athletes. They have to put in the academic work like anybody else, and if they do, they get a real (and valuable) degree. 2 of the players had actually already graduated and just didn’t take enough credit hours in the fall to qualify. They were moving on after this semester anyway, so that’s not news. The other two didn’t meet TECH’s standards, not the general NCAA’s. Tech has more stringent requirements for its own athletes than the general ones. The fact that we do have athletes and regular students to NOT make it through Tech academically makes me respect the institution and the ones that do make it even more. It says “You have to earn this; it’s not just given to you. And if you do persevere and earn this degree, you will be better for it.” This country should be more like Tech.

When was the last time a Uga athlete was held out due to an “academic” issue??? Not just Uga, but any of the other football factories?

bob

The NCAA yarn is slowly unweaving. The world is not flat, and these kids are not amateur athletes. You selfish schools just want slave labor. period. They keep hauling these kids off with broken necks, concussions and knees that will not work right every again. The schools profit millions and the kids get ridicule for selling an autograph for a free tattoo.

The reason that Tech players seem to flunk out more than other teams like UGA is – it is hard for a UGA Dawg player to become “academically ineligible” when they take such Dumb-a** majors such as General Studies, PE, Housing (and NO, not construction – but Public Housing, which includes a third of the UGA football team), African-American Studies,Social Studies, Pre-School Majors, Insurance, Recreation Majors, etc. It’s hard to flunk when the vast majority Dawg players take these majors. No such majors at Tech. I know – I am one of those former Dawg athletes who graduated from one of those useless majors where I can’t find a descent job.

Georgia tek played Strength of Schedule # 97 in the nation and UGA the # 45 Strength of Schedule, and we beat your sorry butts – thus, Georgia tek plays its bowl game tomorrow at 5 pm no less in

SHREVEPORT.

All of the other bowl games have been and will continue to be on ESPN, except for lowly Georgia tek who plays your bowl game in SHREVEPORT on ESPN 2.

195-148-2

195 games Georgia has beat Georgia tek in BASEBALL and you come running in here to talk about Baseball with your only 148 wins against Georgia in baseball.

If George O’Leary has our number, why does he have a LOSING RECORD to UGA ?
