The Falcons are the class of the NFC, but a familiar face looms

Matt Ryan, feeling frankly fearless in Seattle. (AP photo)

Feeling fearless in Seattle: Another three-touchdown game for Matt Ryan. (AP photo)

They’re in the playoffs, and they’re as close to having the No. 1 seed throughout the NFC bracket as you can get without clinching. They’ve got two games to go, both of them here. Win once more — here we note that the Falcons meet the NFL’s worst team, Carolina, in the regular-season finale Jan. 2 — and they won’t play anywhere but here until February.

And that’s the way it ought to be. If you’re looking for the NFL’s best overall team, it’s Atlanta. (And if you’re wondering when last we could say that about the Falcons with any conviction, the answer would be, “Um … never.”)

The Patriots have a fabulous offense, but their defense entered the weekend as the league’s fifth-worst. Maybe Tom Brady is good enough to override that failing, but at some point a championship team has to stop somebody. (Doesn’t it?) The Ravens are stout, but the Falcons have beaten them. The Falcons lost to the Steelers, but that was before the local team figured out how good it could be.The Jets are more a TV show than a Super Bowl winner. Those are the only AFC teams worth mentioning.

As for the NFC: The Giants just blew a 21-point lead in a prove-it game, meaning they proved they don’t belong among the elite. The Saints lost in Baltimore on Sunday, solidifying the season-long belief that the reigning champs are indeed last year’s team. The Bears lead the NFC North but don’t seem a threat. But there’s one team that does.

Given the Falcons’ run of last-gasp victories and their absence of serious injuries, this has been a charmed season for the franchise that, 45 years on, hasn’t known many. These Falcons don’t dazzle you with footwork; they just hammer you with basics. They’re not rattled by an opponent’s quick start. They’re not rattled by anything. That said …

The Philadelphia Eagles are coming fast. (Emphasis on “fast.” Those guys can really run.) They weren’t supposed to lead the NFC East with two games to go — back in September, Dallas and the Giants were the touted teams — and however the Eagles fared was supposed to hinge on new quarterback Kevin Kolb.

Two weeks into the season, the Eagles had a new new quarterback. Andy Reid, the low-key coach, chose to elevate Michael Vick to No. 1 after saying repeatedly he would not. (Kolb had gotten hurt in the opener.) The Eagles made the announcement via a mass text message at 6 p.m. on a Tuesday night. At a Wednesday briefing Reid faced an enraged Philly media, which demanded to know why it should ever trust him again.

Today the Eagles are at worst the NFC’s second-best team, and they’ve already beaten the Falcons on a day when Vick didn’t play. (Question for a rainy afternoon: Are the Eagles deeper at quarterback than the Phillies are in starting pitching?) The Eagles are having a season kissed by the angels, same as the Falcons. You know something strange is happening when, as happened Sunday, a Vick-fueled Philly rally enables his former team to clinch a playoff berth.

Who'd win a playoff meeting?

So now we ask: Is it possible to have two teams of destiny? If so, which one wins?

Speaking last week, the former Falcon great Jessie Tuggle said: “I’m a little biased, but I think [the Falcons are] the best team in the NFC.”

Then, after a pause: “But Philadelphia could push them.”

Think about it. Jan. 23, 2011: The Georgia Dome stages its first conference championship game, and who should be the opposing quarterback? Only the guy who used to pack the place.

Me, I’m thinking that would be the toughest ticket in the history of Atlanta sports, above even Muhammad Ali’s comeback fight against Jerry Quarry in October 1970. And I’m also hoping it doesn’t happen for a selfish reason: The profession I’ve chosen would be rendered null and void, at least for that week.

If ever a story could write itself, it’d be this: Michael Vick returns to Atlanta, a Super Bowl on the line. Nuff said.

DID NO ONE EVEN FOLLOW THE TRIAL?!! Everyone makes ignorant comments without even knowing the details of the case. So-called Michael Vick fans just read the headlines on ESPN but don’t want to know the details of his actions.

Can you honestly say that someone who can grab a dog by it’s legs and repeatedly slam it against the concrete until it is nothing but a lifeless bloody mess can be fully rehabilitated? Someone who can hold a dog under water while it struggles and slowly watch it die has deep psychological problems.

I was the biggest #7 fan but i will not root for him. He is a disgrace off the field, and an EAGLE on the field.

The problem is that we fans hold athletes to these ridiculously high standards. I hear people on here crying that Vick lied (who hasn’t), Vick smoked marijuana (many on this blog have too), admits he didn’t try hard when he played in Atl – didn’t reach his potential (many of us haven’t and don’t work as hard as we could)…Flipped middle finger at Falcons fan (we flip ours too)…sure he was immature and wrong but let’s not be so holier than thou!

Oh, he “enjoyed killing dogs.” It was a dog fighting ring…a business at that point…an illegal one. You kill dogs because it is part of the business…not because you are into exterminating dogs. It’s illegal so he went to jail. Case closed. In the chicken business they kill chickens…its legal. Many of us hunt deer….to thin out the population of deer…its legal. Much more love of killing in hunting than in the dog fighting business. Purpose of hunting = to kill.

Dog fighting is the poor persons equivalent to being an owner of UFC. A dog fighting ring pits dogs against one another…UFC pits humans against one another.

He was wrong and he went to jail for it..and paid his price. Didn’t get saved by his money & lawyers…..like other celebrities.

Yes he can be rehabilitated…and who are you to judge? Can someone (ray lewis) who won’t even acknowledge the two men who died that night be rehabilitated? Can someone who rapes young girls (big ben) be rehabilitated? I think it is such a double standard…I think killing an actual human being should get a long prison sentence, not probation. For the record – I love Michael Vick – cough cough** excuse me I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. If Mike Vick had never come to Atlanta, then the Falcons would have never been embarrassed by his never ending thugness – and consequently never would have ventured to find a quarter back that was everything Mike Vick wasn’t – a smart, selfless player who understands that he’s a PROFESSIONAL and his only job is to win football games. If Mike Vick had never screwed up, we’d still be lost in mediocrity and Matt Ryan would have never come here and this magical season would never have happened. In short – This Bud’s for you Mr. Super ghetto, death doggy-dog, gangsta man. When your given the world, you pi$$ is away like no other, opening the door for superior talent, and moral character that makes you look like low life piece of trash you are. Go Falcons!

Every time Michael Vick’s name is mentioned on this blog, when I read the arguments between his fans and Falcon fans, I feel sick. Yes, Michael Vick may very well beat the Falcons in the conference game, which would sicken the real Falcon fans, and delight his diseased supporters. Michael Vick is a diseased soul, and so are the Atlantans who support him against the Falcons. Why do they love him so much? Is it simply because he is gifted with superior physical ability? I don’t think so. What does mere strength prove? His strength was also greater than that of those beaten-down dogs whose heads he gleefully smashed against his driveway; does he deserve love for that? Child molesters are stronger than their victims — does that excuse their actions? The Nazis were stronger than France and Poland, too. Should we have cheered their victories? He is a bad guy, people. Why is that so hard for his supporters to see, and so hard for those in the media to admit? Arthur Blank did exactly the right thing by cutting ties with this foul, sick man. Thomas Dimitroff, Mike Smith and Matt Ryan have built an honest, solid team we Atlantans should all be proud of. But Michael Vick’s Atlanta supporters now hate their own city’s team. Why? Apparently, they hate them simply because of their goodness, in the same way that Dracula can’t stand the sight of a cross. Maybe the good, honest, hard-working, humble Falcons shine too much light onto their own dark corners and make them hate themselves. Matt Ryan may lack some of Michael Vick’s natural physical gifts, but Michael Vick lacks every ounce of Ryan’s character. But “good guys finish last,” as the pessimistic old saying goes. If Vick circles the field at The Georgia Dome victorious, having beaten down his old team, to the delight of his sick supporters, it will be a dark day for the rest of us in Atlanta. But maybe, just maybe, the good guys will prevail just this once. We can only hope so. What a true redemption that would be. GO FALCONS!

You’re correct, Katherine. I’m not a falcon fan anymore…stopped in 2007 after I was called a nig… by several “fans” on these blogs for defending Vick on the the field..not fighting dogs. He paid for that as he should have.

One good thing about these Atlanta Falcons is:

1) They have REAL leaders in Mike Smith, Matt Ryan and Michael Turner
2) They beat a team down. Time of possession is critical. The Falcons offense is on the field 2/3rds of the game giving a powerful offense very little time on the field, while wearing down the defense by the beginning of the 4th quarter.
3) They are a MUCH better team than 9 weeks ago when they lost in Philly to Kevin Kolb.
4) Their defense, even though they have holes, are ranked 7th in the league in points against. That is the most critical stat for a defense. They may bend, but they do not give up huge point totals.
5) There is NO WAY this Falcon team would have lost the game to Philly like the Giants did. They would have run the clock.
6) Even if the Falcons would have been tied, with THIS Falcon team, and we have seen it time and time again, with over 1:00 left in the game, that is an eternity for Ryan to come back and win. (Check Chicago in 2008, Baltimore and Green Bay this year)
7) This team is for real and fears no one. I don’t care if it’s Brady, the Mannings, Bres, or Vick, this team will stare them down and beat them, especially NOW. Not 9 weeks ago.
8) For anyone who say that the Falcons can only win at home, check the stats. The Falcons are now 6-2, with three road wins in a row, and 4 of their last 5 wins are on the road.
9) This team DOES NOT CHOKE.
10) Let’s do as Mike Smith has said, let’s take 1 game at a time. Ryan is 32-12 as a starter, 19-1 at home. This is not your OLD Falcons.

He already said they Falcons are going to lose to the Saints. Tell Herbert his team is going to lose and tell Matt Ryan is going to eat his Defense alive. He said “that Reggie Bush wasn’t in the first meeting but he back now so the Falcons better watch out”. He also said ” The Who Dat Nation travel well and we are going to go that dome in Atlanta drown out a lot of Falcons fans”. He said that the Falcons have had a easy schedule this year and that why they are 12-2. They couldn’t beat the tough teams like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia even though both teams had backup QB. He said teams like Arizona, San Francisco, Cleveland, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Green Bay, Tampa Bay, and Carolina aren’t really tough teams. They struggle with San Francisco who is 5-9 and if that CB player ran out of bounds the Falcons would be 11-3. Just call in and just say the Falcons are going to tear his Saint up and his team is nothing like last year team. There stations solgon is Let’s hear you holler! To all the folks wonder why Vick was sentenced to prison for dog fighting.
Vick plead guilty to running an organized crime ring, that included illegal gambling.
Federal prosecutors were going to charge him under the RICO act, so he admitted running, and finacing an interstate gambling operation, involving dog fighting.

Vick went to prison for Racketeering, just like the gangsters in the Mafia.

I have been predicting this all year: Falcons vs Eagles (lead by MV7) with the marbles on the line. I am a Falcon Fan as well as a Vick Fan. I am rooting for the Falcons to go to the Super Bowl, but want MV7 to have a great season. If the Falcons loose, I’d rather it be to the Eagles with MV7 at QB. With Kolb at QB for the Eagles, the Eagles are no thought for me.

What a great story it would be: Falcons vs MV7 and the Eagles for the NFC Championship. I am a bit mixed.

Vick Supporter,
All I will say, is we will see. I think so many are taking for granted that the Eagles and Falcons will play each other. If the Eagles are the 3rd seed, they will either take on the Giants (can you say crumble) again or the New Orleans Saints in the FIRST Round. Remember the Bears hold the second seed under the Falcons if they tie or have a better record than the Eagles because they kicked their tails in Chicago.
If the Eagles are the second seed under the Falcons, then it looks like they would either play the Bears or the Saints.
I don’t see them beating either the Bears or Saints. Their hope is based upon playing that BUM let me lay down Giants team to advance, only to play the Saints which will kill them.

Prediction: NFC Championship Game Falcons vs Saints in the Georgia Dome

The Eagles have two weapons on offense, containing one is all you need.

The Falcons have locked up home field advantage for the playoffs…..

HOWEVER –

Frankly, I think every team in the playoffs will be a threat this year, minus the NFC West winner. The Falcons deserve to be where they are at, but the playoffs is a place for hot teams and hot players. Teams like Philly are clearly a threat. So is New Orleans who has remained solid and will be confident. So is even a team like Indianapolis, who with Manning should always be taken seriously no matter how much worse the team seems right now.

The real key for Atlanta is the home field. At home, Atlanta is going to have an advantage. Still, they don’t strike fear in their opponents despite being a darn good team, and they must be ready for everyone’s A game. A superb offensive performance by an opponent is something to worry about, as we saw against Philly earlier this year.
