The thing about Newton is that he often doesn’t appear that impressive because he makes it look so darn easy. It’s like Bob Ross painting a landscape… it didn’t look like he was doing anything difficult but try it yourself and wow, you really appreciate the skill.

A great football player on the field but off the field there is nothing great about him. To me a great collegian represents his self on the field in greatness as well as off the field.

Hope Auburn enjoys this season and a possible Heisman trophy winner for someone that used them to get to the next level.

Though once again Capt. Obvious (Bradley) has had to wipe the egg from his face regarding his pint sized powers of prognostication it is nice to see him attempt to–for a moment–put aside the soap opera behind the curtain to focus on what has been an unworldly football performance on the field. I fully understand the feelings about the pay for play stuff and–like everyone else–really have no way of knowing what the real deal is and perhaps never will but as everyone tries to rip Cam and the Tigers down I hope they have at least in their pure football hearts been able to put aside all this and recognize that the guy has just completed a season for the ages. Herschel? I’m not so sure though he was unquestionably a great one. This year has been almost like watching an improbable movie.

No doubt we will soon be floating here in a sea of Hater-Ade and as an AU grad and resident my thoughts are clearly biased but I think the most objective eyes can see that we have witnessed greatness. When Bama won it all last year I gave them all their due. They were a machine and richly deserved the championship they won. Likewise with Florida and Tebow. Hating is like drinking poison and waiting for the other guy to die. Live a little!:)

Mark, do you really want to talk about UGA’s recruitment of Herschel Walker? The Trans Am is only the beginning. It’s never too late to have wins vacated for recruiting violations…

Newton is far and away the best college football player this season. It is not fair to compare across seasons because each person in question faced different levels of competion.

But since you’re asking, as far as I’m concerned, Peyton Manning and Bo Jackson were better than Herschel Walker.

Correct that it is hard to compare people across eras. I think Peyton will always carry the albatross of losing the big games which, ironically, has dogged him in the NFL. My perspective is limited as I’ve only followed college ball since the late 60s. Suffice to say, I’d like to see a player who had a better single year than the one Newton just completed. I think the cloak-and- dagger-my-school-is-better-than-your-school stuff has been beaten to death. How about a realistic response to Mark’s supposition?

“Cam Newton in the NFL = Vince Young”

Nah. Vince Young had major questions about his throwing motion, and to a lesser extent his accuracy, coming out of college. Cam Newton’s throwing motion is much closer to where it needs to be, and his accuracy is better too.

Like Young, though, Newton plays in a non-pro style offense, which means his NFL learning curve is going to be much steeper than a guy like Andrew Luck who plays in a more pro-style scheme.

Agree ItalianDawg and also agree his game may not really translate to the NFL. He is always in the shot gun and the speed up there will negate the runs. Does remind me of Young who I have not written off. Mental toughness is hard to quantify and VY seems lacking in this area. Cam has certainly dealt with adversity pretty well but I don’t know about study habits, etc. NFL is a whole other ball of wax.

Cam is one of the best three qb’s, not even close to Hershell or Bo. WDE, I thought you checked out a while back. Is Auburn Man still on here? I was enjoying the dialogue. One thing about all the venom towards UGA fans, I’m a UGA fan, have loved the AU-UGA rivalry, which, I now believe, AU leads by two games. Great fans to tailgate with, win or lose. If I were an AU fan I’d be really pissed at Newton’s dad, and, IF it comes out that Cam knew, I’d be pissed at Newton. This team is good enough to win without cheating and I hope this doesn’t turn out to be a black eye for SEC and all of College Football.

The following players for different reasons easily are better than Scam Newton and ALL of these players while in college were good character guys…. Billy Sims, Bo Jackson( notice I am not being anti Auburn), Tony Dorsett, Earl Campbell, Marcus Allen, Archie Griffin, Tim Tebow, O.J. Simpson(I said while in college) Vince Young and Tommy Frazier. Check out their stats and the impact they made on college football and Scam IS NOT CLOSE TO ANY OF THEM!!!!

After looking at photos of Cecil Newton, I do believe that was the man Cam kept hugging when he came off the field on at least two occasions. Thought he was to play a minor role…so, why wasn’t he sitting with his wife? Also, Cam’s postgame interview was way too brief…the usual thank God, etc. He will be seriously pounded in the NFL. Cam isn’t too popular, too say the least, even in the SEC.

When UGA with Harrick got caught cheating, I was glad to see UGA, voluntarily, not play in the SEC tournament, nor the NCAA tournament. It was fun to watch them win, but, after the news of academic fraud, etc. came out, it wasn’t fun anymore. It was cheating. Why can’t people just play by the rules. My team, UGA, has been down, for two years. But, I’ll take Richt, and his 96 wins in ten years. I wish he’d quit recruiting guys he has to kick off and suspend, that only hurts the team, but, I guess, these days, any kid is a risk. One reason I like Div II ball is that kids are playing because they want to, not because of what they are getting for playing.

Aubie’s Denial, I don’t know what it should be…something along the lines of what USC got? Instead of sanctimony, people should put themselves in the shoes of the basic AU fan. We have no way of knowing what has gone on and really have pretty much had to ride and die with the team. At this point, does it make any sense to sit Cam (as MB suggested prior to UGA game) because he might wind up dirty? And this will be hard for anyone from the “losers bracket” to weigh but, at day’s end, this was our team. Had he arrived with a spotless resume the on field results would have been the same. Back room shenanigans are beyond the control of any fan. If he wins the NC and the Heisman and it gets taken away then so be it. If sanctions are imposed then likewise. Will we look on Cam less fondly and consider him mercenary? No doubt. But college football is about as “pure as the driven sludge” as someone here wrote a while back. Like the old Janis Joplin song said, “Get it while you can.” Retrospective viewing of some time in the past when college football was pure is nothing but pure fantasy.

As for Cam Newton? Yep, pretty darned impressive. But I can’t say he would be without the chemistry of the team around him. His receivers were awesome. The running backs did what they needed to do. The defense hung tough. And Cam has been coached well.

Maybe he’d have been the same player at any other school, but somehow I don’t think so. He’s a good fit at a fine University with excellent coaches. I wish him well in the NFL.

BnB, you are right about the falcons. And, actually, I was at UGA during the Kemp thing, found it embarassing (damn, mispelled it again), and felt the punishment was due. I’d rather not win if winning requires cheating. period. is that so hard to believe. Honor, integrity, and playing by the rules are part of winning. And, if you don’t win fairly, you really don’t win. I’m a die hard uga fan, and, I really do love the AU UGA rivalry. One I think we’ve faired pretty well in recently. But if I were an AU fan, after Bishop Newton admitted what he did, I would’ve wanted Cam benched, and I would’ve hoped that would’ve saved vacating an entire season. Maybe I’m in the minority, but, that’s where I am. I’m also a minister, so, I’m likely not the norm. I love to see the dawgs win, I’ll admit the last two years have been frustrating, but I’d rather be frustrated than be part of a once proud University like Auburn who is unwilling to discipline itself. What’s not fair is what it does to all the guys that played with, and for Cam. I really hope nothing more comes of this, but, if it does, here’s my question, will it have been worth it. Is a NC, and an SEC title, worth paying a guy to play for you. Before you respond, I know, UGA has recruited some less than stellar characters lately. I’ve been disappointed and know full well that the dismissals and suspensions have hurt us on and off the field. But, I’d rather lose than play them and I hope integrity, as well as physical prowess, plays into who we recruit in the future. Hate to burst your bubble identity crisis, but, the only fans who are not busting au’s chops right now for cheating, are au fans. USC, Bama, the ACC Commissioner himself has asked for a review for what seems to be no punishment for a major violation when many have been punished for much much less. Lower your ego and realize, we don’t like the game we love being cheapend by the Bishop and his son. We like to pull for SEC champs, be it my school (UGA), or Bama, or LSU, or yes, even FLA. Hell, I’ve always liked AU. If I were an AU fan I’d be pissed right now. This is not about the fact that ya’ll kicked our ass this year. We’ve won four of five against you guys, we have nothing to “whine” about on the field with you guys. We just don’t want the black eye AU is giving the conference, the greatest conference in football.

I hear ya, Aubie’s Denial. I’m a “mister” too! I’m also a world class cynic and really don’t think any other schools would have handled it differently given the same circumstances. There are a lot of commissioners of various conferences questioning the NCAA ruling though. It will be an eternity between now and the NC game on Dec. 10. They may finger Cam for the JFK assassination between now and then. I think I saw powder burns on his throwing arm.

The best part of the win tonight is seeing Georgia fans whine about it.

YES AUBIE’s DENIAL, I hear you, but, I think what I’m hearing is fact. It was reported on CBS tonight, before kickoff, that Bishop Newton sought money for his son to play. ONly in this case, for whatever reason (maybe 20 million $ to the SEC and BCS), was the rule regarding agent representation interpreted the way it was. Others have been ruled guilty for less than what happened here. Nothing else needs to be proven. If a father pimped his kid to UGA, and we knew it, even if we didn’t pay the player, I’d be pissed if he ever wore a UGA uniform. And I consider myself a UGA fan. I do believe in innocent until proven guilty, its just that AU, the SEC, and the NCAA has moved the bar on what “guilty” is and only AU fans are blind to that. Everyone, ESPN, sports writers everywhere, teams everywhere, fans everywhere, other commissioners and ADS, they are all in awe at the pass Cam got. PTI, Gameday, I could go on and on. I wish ya’ll well in the game and hope nothing else comes of this. Newton is so gifted, I hope his and his father’s actions do not leave the SEC with a black eye. Thanks for the dialogue guys. Calling it a night. Congrats AU, I hope it all works out without further complication.

11:33…no whining here. We had a terrible season that is only made tolerable that we beat GT. Again, you had a great season with a great athlete. But I don’t think you can put him in Bo Jackson’s category, much less that of Herschel. We gave you guys all you wanted with our worst team in years and we should have won, but didn’t, so give AU credit.

I just think there is enough smoke to indicate a fire somewhere. If the Reverend Cecil demanded money from Miss St, I do not believe he sent Cam to somewhere he had not previously entertained for free. I heard Cam told a MS coach his father had arranged him to go to AU because the money was TOO MUCH. If true, that is with his knowledge. Remember the Reverend Cecil denied it until the flames were lapping at the feet of Cammie and then he came out and said it was just him. It will probably all come out. Come back and talk then.

Mark, your readers are fantastic. He’s a phenom that acts like a goofball and has a good time doing it, so that must mean he’s self centered and arrogant. Forget the work he does with kids, the leadership he shows on and off the field, or the fact that anyone who’s ever spent time with him loves him.

As much as I’ve enjoyed watching him, though, I have to agree with the people who say one year at the top level is not enough to give him the greatest of all time distinction. Even if this is potentially his third straight national championship (Florida, Blinn, AU).

Herchel made his rep against weak sisters. He was always contained when they played Clemson, the only good team on the regular schedule in those days, and the bowl games with the exception of the first one. He peaked as a player in the Notre Dame game. Never had any moves, that’s why he was never anything special in the pros. Newton has never been stopped and will excel in the pros.

DEFINATELY the Heisman Trophy winner, hands down. Has the size, arm, legs and the head! Probably gone after this season though. Can you call him the best collegian football player after only one year? If they win the BCS and he wins the Heisman, he has to be considered. One of the best single seasons leading his team. I would waver on calling him the “best ever”. Like to see him follow it up (but may not get the chance if he goes to the NFL). I’m just saying but Herschel Walker had as just a good as year in 1980 and they won the National Championship after he rushed for 150 yards with a separated shoulder against Notre Dame. He was just a FRESHMAN and followed it up with two more stellar seasons. Won the Heisman as well. Cam IS great but doesn’t have the history yet.

Herschel Walker was the greatest college player in the modern era, hands down. He made other teams have to deal with him. He made his teammates better players. He did his thing despite the best efforts of opposing defenses to stop him. Most importantly, he did it for three years–and he did it with character and humility.

Cam Newton, this season, has been the single most important player for his team–more so than any other player I have seen since Herschel. He forces other teams to have to deal with him, and his skill makes his teammates better players. He does his thing despite the best efforts of other teams’ defenses to stop him. In my estimation, for this ONE SEASON, he’s had the single best on-the-field season of any college player ever; without him, Auburn is an 8-4 or 9-3 team at best. Character and humility? Not so much.

And, again, Herschel did it for three years. Newton’s one-and-done; he’ll be in the NFL next season without question. Even if there’s a lockout, he’ll declare. I mean, when one’s dad is shopping one around to the highest bidder, does anyone really think that the chance to have another magical college season will play any role in the decision-making process? This year was no more than a 13-game NFL audition for this mercenary.

I’m in awe of what Newton has done on the field, but the reason the rest of the SEC has not rallied behind him is because of the supposition that there has to be something dirty here. That may or may not be true, but one must recall that it is Auburn, a school well-known for bending the rules (and a school nailed by the NCAA for paying players not so very long ago) and it is Cam Newton, a guy who “thanked God” after his SEC title win–as hypocritical a move as I have ever seen from a guy whose hubris seems to know no bounds and who accumulated 13 traffic violations, stole a laptop (yes he did–don’t try to tell me that he “bought it from some guy” and then threw it out the window when the police came calling) and cheated in school enough to warrant an impending dismissal from UF. I couldn’t help but think that the god actually Cam Newton serves is likely the same one his greedy “bishop” father serves–the god of self-service, the god of anything-goes-as-long-as-I-get-mine. The apple does not fall far from the tree–and the apple and tree are invariably in close communication with one another, if you get my drift. The NCAA is going to trust Cam Newton’s word that he, in the words of Sergeant Schultz, “knew nothing?” Yeah, right. And it’s snowing in the Bahamas.

As I said, character and humility? Not so much.

Here is my top ten all time. Cam makes the list but, I’m sorry folks, it takes more than one year to be “the greatest”. It’s like saying that Derrick Rose is the greatest collegiate basketball player ever… Does he have the potential to be one of the greats? Sure. But, just like Mr. Rose in Memphis (remember, his SAT score was the free points for putting your name on the test), he will be out of the plains before the walls cave in. And for the comment that Spurrier and others have made calling him the best running quarterback, aren’t we forgetting about a guy that played at Va. Tech? I know he didn’t win a national title, but Vick carried the Hokies by himself to the National Championship Game. As much as I hate Vick we have to be honest. He was definitely the best. Look at Vince Young’s Team, loaded with all of that great recruiting class talent on both sides. True, Young was the catalyst and leader but he had help. Look at Newton’s team. A young stud running back, very talented receiving core, along with a possible All-American on D in Fairley… See what I mean? Vick was the Hokies. Regardless, Newton will never be Herschell or Tebow. Sorry people, it ain’t possible. I agree with what others have said. It’s true that talent and athletic ability are the large part, but to be a great college athlete I feel you have to really shine a great light on your University. Herschell, soft spoken, respectful of others til it hurt sometimes, and really an everyman type when you saw the person behind the mythic figure. Tebow…. Need I say more, we all know bout the saint.. I mean for like 5 minutes I actually believed Urban Meyer had morals because of that kid. Which brings us to Newton. Warranted or not, the Newton saga makes no one look good, Cam, Cecil “Pimpin in Hell” Newton, Mississippi State, or Auburn (Chizik I can’t wait to laugh at your down fall). Without further ado here is my list. I tried to be as unbiased as possible and I really tried to think about players that changed the game and completely dominated when they touched the field (As you will see those who played longer left more of an indelible impression). Auburn wins the SEC Title. Strike that with Auburn buys the SEC Title. Dirty players, coaching staff and overall program. Looking forward to the fallout that comes to Auburn from pretending Cam Newton is a good kid (Tim Tebow) and that no one at Auburn did anything wrong. Outside of Auburn who actually believes money was only requested from MSU. Cam Newton may not be the best, but is one of the best we’ve seen in a long time. WOW he is a beast. The more i see him play on the field, i am equally impressed with his exploits off the field – he has leadership, charisma, God blesesd talent and real appreciaton for his teammates and his coaches. Listen to him in his interviews. As for all the naysayers and scrutiny, yes he may have made some mistakes as a young man at 18-19 yrs of age and should have exercised better judgment, but im sure if you comb the background of many past players, you would find some less than honorable things. He is a phenomenal athlete that continues to rise in spite of everything. And for this – i am riding with you CAM. Congrats on taking the SEC baby to the National Championship again!. Continue to make Georgia proud. We look forward to seeing you accept the Heisman next week – because you accomplished everything on the field that you needed to deserve and win that trophy!!

All those DAWG fans crying about their spilled puppy milk (for they played like bullpups instead of bulldawgs this past season and could have been 5-7). Forget Cam’s past discretions…how many “hoodlums” has UGA’s fine coach Mark Richt had to kick off the team in the past year? I lost count at one dozen. No he has not played three years like Hershel but you are comparing apples and oranges… a QB should be compared with another QB (and it is not uncommon for a QB to only have 1-2 years because of someone starting ahead of him); on the other hand, you can play 5-7 running backs a game. Hershel was probably, along with a War Eagle name Bo Jackson arguably the two best RBs in the last 25 years of the 20th century.

Newton is the best college player I’ve ever seen in a regular season, his ‘entire’ career will prove all. Walker had a remarkable high school, college and pro career. Some of the Heisman mentions above went on to be poor NFL players or a cold blooded killer. The first thing I noticed Cam say after the win last night was ‘I’m’ an SEC champion, no mention of the word ‘we’ or ‘our’ team….This says a lot about his true character. I wish him all the luck on his career moving forward.

1. Tim Tebow – This is hard to admit, but for 3 years he was UNBELIEVABLE.
2. Hershel Walker – Dominated other teams. Only 1 NC may hurt his cause.

4. Vince Young – His NC game may be the greatest game I remember for a player in the NC game.

I’ve seen in person Steve Spurrier, Bo Jackson, Hershel Walker., T. Tebow, S. Bartkowski, W. Andrews, T. Nobis, Dominque Wilkins., Peyton M. Dale Murphy, and Chipper Jones play their respective sports. I’ve never as much of as the love and adulation from the fan base for one particular athlete as the AU fans for Cam.

What about some small college guys: Jerry Rice and Walter Payton? How about defensive players: Reggie White, Lawrence Taylor, Bruce Smith, Deion Sanders?

As much as I respect the accomplishments of Tim Tebow, I believe Cam Newton has surpassed him for the one season and one season only (take any of Tim’s seasons to compare). The same goes for Herschel Walker.

In Tebow’s Sophomore season, he had similar numbers. He won the Heisman yet his team went 9-4. He also had a superior supporting cast (Harvin, Caldwell, Ingram, et al). The one advantage Newton may have is that Malzahn may be a better OC than was Mullen.

Newton flat out dominated games and other teams this year like no other. When has a stocked-up Saban team been dominated before by one player?

To do what he did on the field with everything else that was swirling around is even more incredible. That takes a lot of cajones.

This has only to do with between the lines. He obviously has has had some character issues and a sense of entitlement (as well as his dad, the pimping Reverend).

Time will tell if anything else comes out on Newton (possible FBI wiretaps still to come re; Auburn boosters) but he has had the most incredible season I’ve seen.

Couple of thoughts if I may.

First, after one year full year in major college football, it’s a bit early to annoint ANYONE as the greatest ever. I do realize that Cam did play some at UF, but this was his first real year of extended play, whereby one can gauge his overall abilities. And in 2010, his abilities were incredible.

Second, if I had a Heisman vote, I ABSOLUTELY would not vote for Cam. Winning the Heisman is privledge, not a right. At this writing there is simply too much “stuff” surrounding this guy. I am old school and look to past Heisman winners such as Pete Dawkins & Roger Staubach as winners with kind of character I am seeking. At the same time, I do realize that in today’s college sports environment, finding winners with such “character” is probably not possible, but voters SHOULD strive to move more in the direction of these type winners rather that someone who’s actions leave considerable character question marks.

Third,Auburn had a great year. A lot of good players worked hard to make it so. They deserve a shot at the MNC, and I wish them the best. But, WDE fans, if you think this saga is over, I fear you are living in dreamland–and I don’t mean the BBQ restaurant. Once the NCAA AND FBI get their noses under your tent, look out. The fact that nothing much is being said by the highest level of these organizations is not good. If there were no compelling facts and circumstances, wouldn’t someone have said so by now? These investigations take time. Get the class notes from Pete Carroll and USC.

Fourth, I found it interesting that during the broadcast of last evenings game, Vern Lunquist said that the reason Cecil Newton was not at the game was “that because of his complicity in the pay for play scandal, he has been ordered to stay away from Auburn athletics.” Pay for Play scandal? Really Vern? I thought this was just a misunderstanding, and that AU and Pops Newton had been totally cleared of any wrongdoing. Wonder what ole Vern really knows. And if he knows, how many others know.

Fifth, if there really IS anything to all this “stuff,” the principals involved will probably all be long gone by the time any penalties are handed down. It will be the responsibility of those in charge at that time to clean up the mess, and live with potential sanctions.
