Say what you will about him, but he can play the game. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
For a month, the question involving Cam Newton has been, “Did he or didn’t he?” Just for today, let’s try something different. Let’s ask instead: “Is he or isn’t he?”
As in, the greatest player in college football, and not just this year.
As in, the greatest ever.
Said Steve Spurrier, who won the Heisman and who has coached a Heisman winner: “That’s a good question. I don’t like putting anybody at the top, but he might be the best running quarterback probably ever to come through college ball.”
Gene Chizik coaches Auburn, so he doesn’t qualify as a disinterested party. But the same Gene Chizik was the defensive coordinator on a Texas team Vince Young willed to the 2005 BCS title, so he does have standing in the matter. And Chizik, asked if he’d ever seen a better college player than the one he has now, said this:
“No. It’s that simple. If you look over a 13-game span, I’ve never seen anything like it. And it’s running the ball, throwing the ball. Usually great quarterback usually do one or the other better … what God’s blessed Cameron with is the ability to be really, really good at both.”
Then: “We have one game left, so he can’t too big a head with one game left, but I can say he’s probably the best football player I’ve ever seen.”
Said Newton: “Wow.”
We might never know how Cam Newton came to be an Auburn Tiger, but let’s leave that for later. Let’s focus today on Cam Newton, Auburn Tiger. Let’s examine a quarterback who, in one SEC championship game Saturday, managed to replicate the best of what both Danny Wuerffel and Tim Tebow, Heisman winners from Florida, had done in this event on this field.
Against Spurrier’s Gamecocks, Newton passed for 335 yards and ran for 73. He accounted for six touchdowns — four passing, two running. He converted third-and-longs out of nothing.
The thinking was that South Carolina, having seen Newton in his game-of-arrival Sept. 25, might be better suited to get a hand on the irresistible Cam. Turned out the Gamecocks had no idea. They couldn’t sack him and couldn’t cover his receivers. They couldn’t even prevent him from — another Heisman reference! — pulling a Doug Flutie.
Sixteen seconds left, first half: The Gamecocks draw within 21-14. Newton throws two passes, the first for eight yards, the second for 51-yard deflected touchdown as time expired.
About here, you thought to yourself: “Tim Tebow never did that.”
Yeah, yeah. Nobody ever wondered if Tim Tebow’s daddy put him up for sale, either. But if we’re comparing the two quarterbacks — and it wouldn’t seem fanciful to do so, given that both played in the SEC and ran a spread offense — the sainted Tebow never worked the wonders in any of his four seasons that Newton has wrought in his one.
A year ago — to the day, Newton emphasized — this quarterback was winning a JUCO national championship with Blinn College of Texas. On Saturday he had won the SEC title and booked passage to the BCS title game and done it in his hometown to boot. “Words can’t explain it,” said Newton, meeting the media for the first time since Nov. 9.
Then: “It’s a wonder what God can do in a person’s life, in such quick fashion. I thank Him single every day. As soon as my feet touch [the floor] my knees touch … I can’t even be happier than I am right now.”
Newton began his postgame session by reading a statement: “I’ve done nothing wrong, and I’m only going to answer questions about football and this game.” And ordinarily we hard-nosed media types would have snorted with laughter at such a request. But such was the majesty of Newton’s play that the request seemed almost reasonable.
We can and will spend the month before Auburn plays Oregon in Glendale, Ariz., parsing the latest reports and allegations — and you just know some will be forthcoming — but for this night it was possible to revel in a performer and his performance. And we would like, so as not to leave the question posed above unanswered, to offer this:
Cam Newton is the second-best college player I’ve ever seen. Herschel Walker, and only Herschel Walker, was better. And not by much.

EXCUSE ME?!?!?!?!?! Herschel Walker #1 ever…………….BIAS!! SERIOUSLY, THINK ABOUT ALL THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYERS TO EVER PLAY!! Cam is probably going to win the Heisman in the biggest run-away race ever. The heisman is awarded to the best colloege football player right. JUST THINK ABOUT IT!!!!! BTW I would put Bo Jackson in the top 5, simply stellar athlete. Stil holds the fastest 40 yarder in college or pro football 4.12 seconds!

you can tell that this writer is a bulldog fan. any conversation you get into with a dawgtard fan turns into a discussion about herschel walker, get over it!!!, that was YEARS ago. Try fixing your team up to where they actually make headlines (besides ones mentioning a player’s arrest) and are in contention for the SEC title before talking about a LONG past glory.

By Tide Rising: “.. I think Cecil could really help out AU and clear his son if he would just come out and say where his church got the money for the repairs..”
Where ever he got the money he had it in July of 2009. That’s six months before Cam was being recruited by Oklahoma, MSU, Auburn and Tennessee.
That little fact is documented in the minutes of the July, 2009 Newnan city council meeting. My source is TV channel 3 in Columbus, Georgia, which showed an interview with a Newnan city official a couple of weeks ago. The official had the book of minutes in her hand as she spoke.
The smear-campaign writers tend to ignore facts like this one, that don’t fit their carefully crafted scenarios.

Also, I see some of you don’t read much and still haven’t learned that the charges of Cam Newton cheating at Florida have been proven to be false. I’d post a link but I think many of you are too lazy to click it.
If you’d like to see that the cheating charges are a lie, google “Houston Chronicle, Cam Newton, Blinn College” and read the article.
That writer has real sources with names and job titles, not some “anonymous source” that probably doesn’t exist.

Putting aside all of the accusations and all the scandal, Cam Newton is without a doubt an excellent football player. He has more than proven that this year. But to compare Newton to Walker is just ignorant. Herschel Walker is without a doubt the greatest college football player ever ,period. No play before or since has impacted a team, a conference, or the whole NCAA as Herschel Walker did from 1980-1982. The thing that seperates Herschel is he was all UGA had. Any team that played Georgia during the early eighties new that Herschel was going to carry the rock 30+ times per game. Opponents would stack the box with nine and ten men and they still could not stop him. While im not saying teams do not key on Newton, I am positive that they do. The difference is Newton has several other weapons, Dyer and Adams, at his disposal. They are just as key to Newton’s success as Newton himself his. Herschel was it for UGA, thats all the offense the bulldogs had was Herschel Walker. For those of you that don’t know, let me inform you that in the 1980 National Championship Game against Notre Dame Walker gained 150 yards rushing, the rest of the georgia offense gained negative yards. Herschel Walker without a doubt hand delivered that natl title to uga. He put the whole bulldog nation on his back and carried them all the way to a number one ranking. Yes newton has been phenomenal this year but he is no herschel. Herschel is seperated from all the rest and always will be. During Herschels time in athens the dawgs went 33-3, won a national title and 3 straight sec championships, that puts him a cut above every other player in sec and ncaa history. Above Bo Jackson, Peyton Manning, Danny Weurfel, Tim Tebow, and Cam Newton. There will never be another player that can have as big an impact on a football game as herschel walker. He is without a doubt the greatest college football player ever.

DC: cam newton def has more weapons around him than herschel walker did in his time at georgia. the remarkable thing about herschel is he was not a QB. Newton has the option to pass or throw, and yes he can beat you both ways. All walker did was run the football thats it. Every body in the stadium knew herschel was going to get the ball and no team could stop him for three straight years in the sec. Newton is very good, im not saying he isnt. But 3 sec championships in three years and a natl chamiponship speak for itslef. No other player has ever done that. Herschel is the best.

I always get a kick out of the media crowning someone as THE GREATEST EVER. I thought Tebow was THE GREATEST EVER? One season of playing as a starter and the media wants to crown this kid..
Was he the best player this year? I think so.
Does one year a “Greatest Ever” make? I think not
NCAA ruled the kid eligibile to play so deride him all you like. He’ll win the Heisman and Auburn has a good chance of winning the NC. An interesting year in college football. Curious to see how TCU handles playing some big boys…but I’m rambling.

Hey recruits:
Check out the latest bowl rankings-
1. BCS National Championship Game (Jan. 10): Auburn (13-0) vs. Oregon (12-0). How will the Ducks stop Cam Newton? Which is faster, Oregon’s offense or Nick Fairley’s first step? What uniforms will Oregon wear? I don’t know. But I can’t wait to find out.
2. Rose (Jan. 1): TCU (12-0) vs. Wisconsin (11-1). Bret Bielema calls the Badgers’ smashmouth offensive style “American football,” and what better place to play it than in America’s most iconic football stadium? Be warned, however: TCU plays fast American defense.
3. Sugar (Jan. 4): Ohio State (11-1) vs. Arkansas (10-2). In an alternate universe, Ryan Mallett and Terrelle Pryor would have faced each other three times by now — in the Ohio State-Michigan game. But SEC-Big Ten has turned into a pretty heated rivalry of its own.
4. Orange (Jan. 3): Stanford (11-1) vs. Virginia Tech (11-2). Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck is a future NFL darling, but Hokies counterpart Tyrod Taylor is a darn good passer himself. Enjoy watching them both in what should be a very entertaining shootout.
5. Capital One (Jan. 1): Michigan State (11-1) vs. Alabama (9-3). Nick Saban faces one of his former schools, looking to restore order in Tuscaloosa before Mark Ingram and Julio Jones likely bolt to the NFL. Meanwhile, Mark Dantonio looks to pull off his 12th surprise win of the season.
6. Cotton (Jan. 7): LSU (10-2) vs. Texas A&M (9-3). Friday nights are normally reserved for crazy WAC games on ESPN2, but what happens when it’s Les Miles on FOX? Please tell me Terry Bradshaw will conduct the halftime interview.
7. Las Vegas (Dec. 22): Boise State (11-1) vs. Utah (10-2). The Utes canceled a three-game series with Boise upon joining the Pac-10, but the Broncos aren’t letting them get away just yet, even if it means returning to dreaded Nevada.
8. Alamo (Dec. 29): Oklahoma State (10-2) vs. Arizona (7-5). Justin Blackmon, meet Juron Criner. You’re both exceptionally talented receivers, and since defense is optional in bowl games, we fully expect you to combine for about 23 catches and 283 yards.
9. Chick-fil-A (Dec. 31): Florida State (9-4) vs. South Carolina (9-4). The Old Ball Coach reunites with Free Shoes University, but one year too late for another faceoff with Bobby. Hopefully he’ll chuck it around a little for old time’s sake.
10. Insight (Dec. 28): Missouri (10-2) vs. Iowa (7-5). The Hawkeyes are better than their record (or at least they were at one point) and should play like it. Adrian Clayborn and the D-line could cause problems for Mizzou quarterback Blaine Gabbert.
11. Fiesta (Jan. 1): Oklahoma (11-2) vs. Connecticut (8-4). So you figure the overmatched Huskies don’t have a chance, right? Then either you’re forgetting the Sooners’ recent history against Fiesta Bowl underdogs or you’ve just seen UConn’s offensive stats.
12. Gator (Jan. 1): Mississippi State (8-4) vs. Michigan (7-5). This could either be Rich Rodriguez’s swan song or his crucial turning point. One thing’s for certain: A rested, recovered Denard Robinson could put up a lot of yards.
13. Champs Sports (Dec. 28): West Virginia (9-3) vs. N.C. State (8-4). Wolfpack quarterback Russell Wilson is usually good for at least 300 yards per game, but the Mountaineers’ defense has been stingy all year. This is strength vs. strength.
14. Sun (Dec. 31): Miami (7-5) vs. Notre Dame (7-5). Sometimes you tune in for the names alone, and this will be one of those times. It will be worth it just to see CBS show the old highlights from the teams’ late ’80s/early ’80s classics.
15. Kraft Fight Hunger (Jan. 9): Nevada (12-1) vs. Boston College (7-5). It’s the last chance to see Colin Kaepernick run the Pistol to perfection, and to see whether Eagles All-America linebacker Luke Kuechly can stop it by himself.
16. Poinsettia (Dec. 23): San Diego State (8-4) vs. Navy (8-3*). This time next year, Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs could be stationed on a ship in San Diego. Time to get acquainted with the Aztecs’ star freshman running back, Ronnie Hillman.
17. Hawaii (Dec. 24): Hawaii (10-3) vs. Tulsa (9-3). It’s been eight years since the winner of this game scored fewer than 41 points, and these two teams both field top 10 scoring offenses. It will be Christmas morning by the time the last pass is thrown.
18. Holiday (Dec. 30): Nebraska (10-3) vs. Washington (6-6). The worst idea for a sequel since Weekend at Bernie’s II.
19. Texas (Dec. 29): Baylor (7-5) vs. Illinois (6-6). There were times when I thought I’d never see Baylor or Ron Zook get back to a bowl game. They did it, along with star Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III and stud Illini tailback Mikel Leshoure.
20. Outback (Jan. 1): Florida (7-5) vs. Penn State (7-5). I know this one sounds glamorous, but Florida’s offense has been dreadful and Penn State’s hasn’t been much better. At least we don’t have to watch Florida’s 15 extra practices.
21. Humanitarian (Dec. 18): Northern Illinois (10-3) vs. Fresno State (8-4). The Bulldogs agreed to return to the blue turf less than a month after their 51-0 loss to Boise State. The formerly ranked Huskies will provide more even competition.
22. Music City (Dec. 30): North Carolina (7-5) vs. Tennessee (6-6). Derek Dooley hopes this will be the first of many postseason ventures for his young Vols. Butch Davis hopes this won’t be his scandal-ridden program’s last bowl game.
23. TicketCity (Jan. 1): Texas Tech (7-5) vs. Northwestern (7-5). The game’s at 11 a.m. on New Year’s Day in Cotton Bowl Stadium — but it’s not the Cotton Bowl. What gave it away, the teams’ combined 6-10 conference records?
24. Military (Dec. 29): Maryland (8-4) vs. East Carolina (6-6). Pirates quarterback Dominique Davis has accounted for more points per game (22.7) than any other player this season. His defense has given up more points (43.4) than all but two.
25. BBVA Compass (Jan. 8): Pittsburgh (7-5) vs. Kentucky (6-6). What a great advertisement for this obscure banking chain. Unfortunately, according to its website, there are no branches within 240 miles of either Pittsburgh or Lexington.
26. Pinstripe (Dec. 30): Kansas State (7-5) vs. Syracuse (7-5). Donovan McNabb vs. Michael Bishop in the 1997 Fiesta Bowl. Ell Roberson vs. Dwight Freeney in the 2001 Insight Bowl. A bowl rivalry renewed — in the Bronx in December.
27. Meineke Car Care (Dec. 31): USF (7-5) vs. Clemson (6-6). The Tigers rank 86th in scoring offense, the Bulls 88th. So you might as well go get your muffler changed because there’s a good chance you won’t miss a touchdown.
28. Armed Forces (Dec. 30): SMU (7-6) vs. Army (6-5*): I feel un-American for ranking this game so low, but the Black Knights aren’t exactly an entertaining team to watch. Unless, of course, they break out their bad-ass combat uniforms.
29. Beef ‘O’ Brady’s (Dec. 21): Southern Miss (8-4) vs. Louisville (6-6): For $175, you can watch the game from a hospitality suite at the 50-yard line just above the Southern Miss bench. The only downer: The buffet is catered by Beef ‘O’ Brady’s.
30. Little Caesars (Dec. 26) Toledo (8-4) vs. Florida International (6-6). Don’t be fooled by the records. Toledo went 7-1 in the MAC and FIU won the Sun Belt. This is their reward for losing to Boise State, Texas A&M, Arizona, Pittsburgh …
31. New Mexico (Dec. 18): BYU (6-6) vs. UTEP (6-6). For their last game as members of the Mountain West, the Cougars travel to … a Mountain West stadium they played in earlier this year. They miss Las Vegas already.
32. GoDaddy.com (Jan. 6): Miami of Ohio (9-4) vs. Middle Tennessee (6-6). The RedHawks deserved better for winning the MAC a year after going 1-11. They’re stuck in a game that a lot of guys will be watching solely for the commercials.
33. New Orleans (Dec. 18): Ohio (8-4) vs. Troy (7-5). The Bobcats lost their last regular-season game 28-6 to Kent State. Troy recently lost 69-24 to South Carolina. You just hate to see teams back their way into the New Orleans Bowl.
34. Independence (Dec. 27): Air Force (8-4) vs. Georgia Tech (6-6). Do you like the triple-option? You better. Injured Jackets quarterback Joshua Nesbitt could return for one last hurrah. Over/under on the number of pass attempts: 11
35. Liberty (Dec. 31): UCF (10-3) vs. Georgia (6-6). Knights freshman Jeff Godfrey boasts the NCAA’s No. 8 passer rating, one spot below Andrew Luck. Wearing No. 8 for the Bulldogs will be receiver A.J. Green. He catches touchdowns.
