Live from the SEC title game, now a place for Gamecocks

If I knew the South Carolina fight song, I'd sing a few bars. (Photo by M. Bradley)

If I knew words to the South Carolina fight song, I'd sing it now. (Photo by M. Bradley)

Not that I have anything against Auburn fans — like I always say, Auburn fans are the best in the world! — but I begin today’s live proceedings with a special shout-out to the folks in garnet and black.

South Carolina, you are here.

I didn’t think your team could make it. Lee Corso didn’t think your team could make it. I’m sure there were times — probably in 2007 and 2008 when he was losing to Vandy — when Steve Spurrier didn’t think his team could make it. But here I sit in Ye Olde Dome, and there it is down below: “Carolina” painted in one end zone. (If you don’t believe, photographic evidence is supplied above.)

Auburn has been here before — three times, winning once. Arkansas has made it twice. Mississippi State has even graced this game, but until today the SEC East has always been represented by Florida, Tennessee or Georgia. (Most often the former, as I’m guessing you’re aware.) South Carolina taking its division isn’t quite like the Mets winning the World Series in 1969, but it’s not far off.

Fun with numbers: In its football, which dates to 1892, South Carolina has won 10 games in a season once — in 1984 under Joe Morrison, when it won at Notre Dame and Clemson but lost at Navy. It has won nine games twice — in 2001 under Lou Holtz and this season. It has won as many bowl games as a program (four) as Jim Donnan won in five seasons as Georgia’s coach. (And Donnan got fired, not long after Quincy Carter threw five interceptions and the Bulldogs  lost at, ahem, South Carolina.)

The Gamecocks have won only one league championship — the ACC in 1969 — and they’re on their third league. Even this year they cut it close, nearly squandering a strong start by losing to Kentucky, which is difficult to do in any season, and then to Arkansas at home.

But they made it. The Evil Genius and his minions went to Gainesville and whomped the Urban Crier, and the other USC now finds itself in the A-T-L. And the nicest part about that is that long-suffering Gamecock fans suffer no longer.

It was one of life’s great mysteries, right up there with the riddle of Stonehenge and the popularity of Jay Leno: Why did Gamecock fans keep coming back? Their team was the unchallenged master of the cosmic flop, and yet Williams-Brice Stadium was always full. Any neutral who suggested a given year might actually be different for the garnet and black was met with a sneering dismissal from every SEC outpost save Columbia: “Have you never heard of the Chicken Curse?”

Turns out it took an Evil Genius to override the Chicken Curse. Turns out Spurrier knew what he was doing, even if it did take him a while to do it. Turns out South Carolina is playing today to win the conference that prides itself as the nation’s finest.

The Gamecocks aren’t supposed to win this game — I think they’ll prevail, not that I’m ever right about anything — but I’m guessing they don’t much care about perception. They weren’t supposed to get here at all.

And with that, the floor is again open for questions, comments and nominations for Gene Chizik as quipster of the year. I’ll be here all day, and I’d be obliged if you’d join me. And just so my Auburn pals don’t think I’m ignoring them … here’s a photo of the other end zone. War Eagle!

SEC Bylaw 14.01.3.2 states:

“If at any time before or after matriculation in a member institution a student-athlete or any member of his/her family receives or AGREES TO RECEIVE, directly or indirectly, any aid or assistance beyond or in addition to that permitted by the Bylaws of this Conference (except such aid or assistance as such student-athlete may receive from those persons on whom the student is naturally or legally dependent for support), such student- athlete shall be ineligible for competition in any intercollegiate sport within the Conference for the remainder of his/her college career.”

Solicitation of funds is by definition to “agree to receive” funds. He’s ineligible by the SEC’s own rules. The spin here is amazing. The ncaa and SEC are both pathetic. And you don’t know that money didn’t exchange hands. You’re taking old Cecil’s word for it which isn’t worth much. The FBI will sort it all out in due time.

San Fran DAWG, I agree completely and have posted such many times. I am surprised no other team from the SEC has legally challenged Mike Slive’s obvious blindness to this bylaw. The NCAA may have declared Cam eligible, but the SEC, in order to follow the internal rules of the conference, should have declared Cam ineligible to compete in any SEC intercollegiate sport. It may be time for the other 11 universities to hold Slive accountable.

Nice article-lacking a good bit of research though. ” until today the SEC East has always been represented by Florida or Georgia” — did you forget the 5 times Tennessee has been to the championship game? Granted, it seems like it’s always Florida or Georgia, but do some work before you post an article.

There were about 45,000 tix sold but only about 30,000 butts in seats. Tampa didn’t work out either, attendance-wise. Charlotte has awful weather this year. The ACC Championship has got to get itself a Dome Home somewhere, somehow. Isn’t that why the SEC moved their Championship game out of Birmingham after a couple years?

Attention, everyone, especially dawgtards. Today is the second anniversary of Saint Jan Kemp’s death. To commemorate her life, we will now observe a moment of silence in memory of Saint Jan, who exposed the shameful practices at UGA that were initiated and carried out by slimeball Vince Dooley. Dooley’s image as a coach and a nice guy were forever shattered during the trial, not to mention the one million dollars that dawgtards had to pay Saint Jan. These practices of recruiting morons and coddling them for four years, them tossing them out like garbage, are still going on, but at least the world knows what’s happening in Athens now.

These practices of recruiting Illiterate goons and coddling them for four years, them tossing them out like garbage, are still going on, but at least the world knows what’s happening in Athens now, and that Mark Richt is just as despicable as Vince Dooley, even more so since the hypocrite Richt pretends to be a Christian with moral and ethical standards.

This game basically says Mark Richt should be fired.

He’s had more than enough time to get his people and his system in place and he’s been awful for 5 years.

He’s done. They aren’t improving enough next year and they certainly aren’t playing for a national title.

If you can get in the game at Auburn and go undefeated twice in 10 years why can’t you do it at Georgia.

They have to aspire to be better, Georgia is going to have to make a change to win a National Title because Mark Richt has not shown that to be something he’s capable of.

Georgia is going to have to move on.

My bet is that the only way ole Cam got out of high school and into FL wasn’t his grades but that he played football and played it well, dumber than dirt but he got into Fl because of football, not grades,he proved that when he did this: Say what, he stole a computer, cheated three times, was being expelled from college, went to a school he did not want to attend (for what reason again), and threw a jab during today’s game. Further, he has zero down side. He probably is not going to class now, will get straight “Fs,” knowing full well he is turning pro in January. 90% of people who play college basketball or football should not be getting the FREE college education because they play sports and are stupid. Take for example Dexter Manley -OK State grad and pro NFL player who could not read nor write but got thru high school, college being dumb because he played football, only in America can stupid people be rewarded for being stupid because of sports. Alright, I don’t want to read anymore of anyone’s comments about the “stupid decisions CMR” made. Let me get this straight – you’ve just pulled within 7 points of a highly explosive offense. Your team has some confidence getting ready to go into the locker room. So what does “the ole’ ball coach” decide to do? Squib kick, great field position with 20 or so seconds left for said explosive offense to move it down the field. And they do. Spurrier lost this game on the last play of the first half. As you Richt haters love to point out – he was outcoached. Too bad Bobo wasn’t calling the plays so you could have him to blame (although I’m sure some of you will find a way).

Solicitation by a player or an agent makes a payer ineligible, except, for whatever reason (perhaps $20 million reasons to the SEC) in the Case of the Son of the Preacher Man. Ask a USC fan, or their AD, or the ACC commissioner who is asking for this to be reviewed again, or ESPN (many at ESPN), or Bama (who had a player suspended for merely attending a party), or A.J. Green (whose jersey, according to the math applied in the one day Newton suspension for 180K, around 5 million). Precedent says this season will be vacated. I ALWAYS pull for the SEC Champ, even Florida, but not this year. Most everyone except AU fans will become Duck fans on Jan 10, and this season will always have an asterik. One concession, what sucks is that you guys had to sit out the year USC cheated to get to the game, ya’ll got hosed in 04, this year you are getting the benefit of the SEC’s and the BCS’s thirst for dollars.

That is a sad (but un-released) perception of the University (sic) of Auburn and the next game against the Ducks. It is a sad day when I will cheer for any team outside the SEC during a bowl season, but after suffering through a year of Auburn and SEC tolerance to a family; that not only violated the laws of the NCAA but those that the SEC imposed (in order to get rid of the perception of a corrupt conference) I cannot support a SEC team that has achieved to the highest levels of amateur sports. In my honest opinion…YES the NEWTON FAMILY is guilty of soliciting their son…Sad to hear from a man from the SOUTH and even more HEARTBREAKING to hear it from a man of the Pentecostal faith. The NCAA and the SEC agree with my honest opinion…Look at the press releases where they declared Cameron Newton ineligible. They (the NCAA and SEC) cannot say that the above violations of NCAA eligibility requirements have been violated. The whole $cam between whether Cam is eligible or non-eligible id definitely defined in the SEC Bylaws (specifically SEC Bylaw 14.01.3.2 states:
“If at any time before or after matriculation in a member institution a student-athlete or any member of his/her family receives or AGREES TO RECEIVE, directly or indirectly, any aid or assistance beyond or in addition to that permitted by the Bylaws of this Conference (except such aid or assistance as such student-athlete may receive from those persons on whom the student is naturally or legally dependent for support), such student- athlete shall be ineligible for competition in any intercollegiate sport within the Conference for the remainder of his/her college career.”
I think that most (outside of the Orange wearing ALLBARN fans) can admit that in public perception this Bylaw was violated. Once Cam’s father admitted that he was shopping his son he admitted to agreeing to receive (contractually agreement can be achieved prior to acceptance of contractual acceptance) aid and assistance beyond or in addition to that permitted by the Bylaws of this Conference. Mike Slive’s (the current and in my (honest opinion) the soon to be released SEC Commissioner)) interpretation of this Bylaw of the SEC is incorrect and once Auburn declared Cam Newton ineligible and the NCAA (in hopes of keeping a BCS buster (TCU) from the NCG) ruled Cam eligible; should have declared Cameron Newton INELIGIBLE for further competition in any intercollegiate sport within the Conference for the remainder of his/her college career as per the Bylaws of the SEC.
Mike Slive you have failed the SEC and you should resign from your multi-million dollar posting.

Quit wishing they would lose because you could not beat them!!!!! I was born and raised in Georgia and throughout my life I found pup fans the worst of the worst. Always preaching about how honorable and upright their program is. Kinda funny how Florida continues to sodomize you and you just can’t come up with enough adjectives to describe your third rate program…. Remember the blackout game against Bama????? There is a reason the SEC and NCAA offices have been flooded with emails and letters and phone calls, and, btw, they’re not all from UGA or Bama fans. They are protest calls, and letters, and emails, from football fans across the country who know BS when they see it. I hate it, for AU fans, for the SEC, but, especially, for the AU players with the obvious exception of Newton. Hell, if Myer didn’t want him, as great as he is on the field, that should tell you something.

Hope it was worth it to let a teenager and his dirty daddy soil your program. Nice diamond encrusted jersey mamma Cam. Wonder how you got that?

I find it humorous that Auburn fans keep chanting “But but but we didn’t do anything wrong”. As if the university doesn’t suffer the consequences of its players actions. Would you still use that same argument if a confessed rapist played football at Auburn. Would you just throw your hands up and say “But Auburn didn’t do anything!” What Auburn fans ignore is that Character and Integrity actually matter. When you lets slimeballs represent your program, your program suffers in the long run.

Unfortunately college athletics can be a dirty business. Like when Walker had Pontiac Trans Am like Smokey and the Bandit at UGA when his mother didn’t have two dimes to rub together. In closing all I’m saying is EVERY school has had their fair share of shady deals. AU didn’t do this Missy State did. Talked to Cam all the up to him signing with AU then after that they alerted the SEC. Seems a little late to me. Why is no one calling for Missy State to be on the chopping block? Why has the media not come out and stated what we all know and was very apparent tonight:

The SEC East was pathetic this year. That is why and only why USC made it to the Championship Game. Look at the teams:
- UF so overrated and bad this year
- Vandy – a powerhouse as usual
- UK – worst than usual
- UT – stunk and stunk as expected
- UGA – average at best
- USC – played well and was the best in this sorry division.

Shame the media never dared to frown on the level of play in the SEC East.

USC is not back. They were the last one standing in a bad group. Next year determines the merit of SOS at USC.

Funny you mention the word lie because that’s what I meant by Fox News. Actually I think ESPN was trying hard raising the stock of Boise St…until they lost! They were pushing hard for them from the start of the year. ESPN thinks they run college football and it’s getting close to doing just that. They took it upon themselves to keep UGA out of the national championship game a few years ago. I liked what Tommy Tuberville said about Holtz and Corzo a few years ago. One couldn’t win in the SEC and the other couldn’t win anywhere he coached. Their talking heads aren’t hard to figure out. Here’s how I think they will pick the championship game. Holtz: Oregon. I really don’t think there was ever a clear cut way out for the NCAA. Never happened before, not at same school, no proof. Just a crazy mess to unwind and find very little. A lot more blame should be focused on the “pimps”, I hate to quote Saban but he was correct.

Before Obama, Fox was actually pretty good. Seriously, rated by Harvard of all places as the most nuetral source for news. Can’t watch it today, too biased. I agree with your take on ESPN for the most part. Scanning the national media, sports pages, other coaches, from all over though, most think this AU things smells a bit. I don’t see how OU can beat Auburn. Paid for or not, Newton is an awesome QB and AU will be far too physical for OU. The Ducks better hope the FBI has something and comes out with it fast!

Hey Dawg88,

You might want to look at the Article that Auburn fans are posting on. Its called Life From the SEC Championship Game. Question for you? Which team won it and who represented the SEC East? Since you are too stupid to answer it, the answer is Auburn won it and South Carolina represented the SEC East. So why is it that you whiney Georgia fans are even posting? You need to wait until Bradley the Thuga Humper reports on The Liberty Bowl……

Tommy Tuberville . . . 2004 Coach of the Year . . . five Western Division championships in the last six years . . . almost ousted in an ugly incident that put Auburn’s accreditation in jeopardy.
“Probation” is not an unfamiliar word on the Plains. Auburn’s N.C.A.A. infractions history includes seven major infractions cases in the last 50 years, not including the present unpleasantness in the so-called Loveliest Village.
Auburn’s history of major violations includes getting slapped with three years’ probation in 1957, three years’ probation in 1958, and a two-year ban on postseason and television appearances in 1979.
Shug Jordan . . . winningest football coach in Auburn history . . . namesake of Jordan-Hare Stadium . . . Auburn alumnus . . . during his tenure, Auburn was put on probation by the N.C.A.A.
Auburn was held responsible for unethical conduct in November 1991 and sanctioned for unethical conduct and a lack of institutional control in August 1993.
In the latter instance, the N.C.A.A. imposed punishments upon the Auburn athletic department just as Terry Bowden was about to begin his first season as the Tigers’ head coach. Following his subsequent resignation under fire, Coach Bowden said on tape that A.U. boosters were funneling large amounts of cash to recruits.
Terry Bowden . . . led Auburn to an undefeated season in 1993 . . . guided the Tigers to a 20-game winning streak . . . was taped making incriminating statements about Auburn’s recruiting practices.
The most recent instance of wrongdoing on the Plains occurred when Auburn was placed on two years’ probation on April 27, 2004. The N.C.A.A. news release announcing the latest penalties against the Plainsmen stated that, during the probationary period from April 2004 to April 2006, “the university shall continue to develop and implement a comprehensive educational program on NCAA legislation and submit periodic reports to the NCAA,” including “a preliminary report that sets forth a schedule for establishing this compliance and educational program.”
“At the end of the probationary period,” concluded the N.C.A.A. athletics policies and practices conform to all requirements of NCAA regulations.” Finally, the Division I Committee on Infractions noted:
As required by NCAA legislation for any institution involved in a major infractions case, Auburn University is subject to the provisions of NCAA Bylaw 19.5.2.3, concerning repeat violators for a five-year period beginning on the effective date of the penalties in this case, April 27, 2004.
If the Committee on Infractions determines “that a major violation has occurred within five years of the starting date of a major penalty,” the institution guilty of such conduct shall be deemed a repeat violator and may be subject to increased penalties.
Pat Dye . . . won four conference championships in the 1980s . . . namesake of the playing field at Jordan-Hare Stadium . . . named S.E.C. Coach of the Year three times . . . during his tenure, Auburn was put on probation by the N.C.A.A.
The institution’s president and athletic director received clear direction from the N.C.A.A. to clean up what is historically the most shameful morass in intercollegiate athletics. Extra vigilance was warranted, in light of Auburn’s frequent instances of recidivism.
The Tigers went undefeated while on probation in 1957. They did it again in 1993. What in the history of War Eagle athletics gives us any reason to doubt allegations that improprieties occurred while the Plainsmen were going undefeated in 2004?
Furthermore, what aspect of the present situation suggests that these allegations concern events which were either isolated or legitimate? This so-called “rogue professor” was, in fact, the interim director of Auburn University’s sociology department, who took on numerous “directed reading” students.
One of the department head’s colleagues, Paul Starr, was quoted in a news report as saying that a “professor normally doesn’t take on many of these,” yet, in this case, 15 such courses appear to have been offered. Another sociology professor, James Gundlach, is cited by The New York Times as the person who compiled the relevant records.
Professor Gundlach’s statistics evidently indicated that Auburn football players with an average G.P.A. of 2.14 in their other classes had an average G.P.A. of 3.31 in the “directed reading” course. Unsurprisingly, this supposed athletic department “oversight” ostensibly involved Auburn’s director of student athlete support services playing “an important role in funneling students to the sociology program.”
However, this purportedly Oxford don-like method of individualized instruction was endorsed by a former A.U. football player. Carnell “Cadillac” Williams, a product of this one-on-one tutelage involving rigorous reading and critical analysis, eloquently expressed his articulate defense thusly: “I didn’t do nothing illegal or anything like that.”
You think this is “The Swamp”? Auburn . . . now that’s a swamp!
Whether fire underlies the smoke surrounding Auburn University remains an open question, but there can be no doubt that, if fire is found to be present, the sordid history of A.U. athletics has left too much tinder lying about for the N.C.A.A. to do anything less than drop the hammer on these latest Yellowhammer State shenanigans.

Ya’ll won’t believe this but I love the UGA-AU rivalry. 100 plus years and correct me if I’m wrong but I believe ya’ll have a two game advantage. Great parties, great fans, both schools. But this thing this year has gotten nasty. The thing is, its not just UGA fans who are upset with the ruling. Too much on the line with the oldest rivalry in the South. I just hope cooler heads prevail and people stop wanting to hold fans responsible for the bad decisions of a few people who actually play. —–that Cecil Newton asked for money?

All I can find is that he was involved in discussions.

For all you know, the ongoing investigation involves Mississippi State. It’s not like a booster of a university has never solicited a player in the past and from what I’ve read, this Rogers guy is not exactly the ethical type.

Why is it that Mississippi State reported this in January of 2010 and did not respond to three requests by the SEC for further information. MSU said they were busy with other issues. Busy? Busy covering up tracks perhaps?

Everyone is so ready to believe anything written by a sportswriter who has information from an ‘unknown source.’

Aubie’s Denial – I just hate the way ESPN makes the case for TCU and Boise St. I do think those teams could win in the championship game. But their body of work for a full season leaves a lot to be desired. I don’t think neither of those teams could have accomplished what AU has. They beat SC (twice) Ark, LSU, UGA and Ala. They got on a roll the last few weeks of the season and steamrolled everyone. I don’t BS or TCU could have survived all of those games. I’m sure AU wishes the game was played next week. I couldn’t see anyone beating them then. But they do have nearly a month to wait.
