Who you for, UGA fans? The Evil Genius or Nick UnFairley?

"Good luck, Stevie boy. We're all counting on you." (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Three years ago yours truly paid a midweek visit to Columbia, S.C., for Steve Spurrier’s weekly briefing. Toward the end, I mentioned that a brand new AJC.com poll had just reconfirmed that the Ol’ Ball Coach was — ahead of even Urban Meyer, who was coming off a BCS title — the man Georgia fans most loved to hate.

“Glad they haven’t forgotten me,” said Spurrier, who seemed pleased.

Postscript: Four days later, Spurrier and South Carolina came to Sanford Stadium and beat Georgia 16-12.

The Bulldogs have nothing to do with this year’s SEC championship game, which will be staged Saturday at the Georgia Dome. (Fun fact: Seven different SEC schools have qualified for the title game since last Georgia did in 2005.) But Spurrier will be here, and he might actually be the sentimental favorite. Because here are your choices:

• In one corner, the Evil Genius and his Gamecock minions, who are new to this championship thing.

• In the other, RoboCoach Gene Chizik and Nick UnFairley and, lest we forget, Cam Newton.

For whom should Dawgs root?

Auburn fans love their team. Almost nobody else does. Let’s state for the record that Newton is the nation’s best player and Fairley its best defender, but we also must concede that the Tigers lead the world in irrational exuberance.

This isn’t to say South Carolina has been without sin. Tight end Weslye Sanders was kicked off the team without playing a down this season, and several Gamecocks apparently got the William Shatner rate at Columbia’s Whitney Hotel over the summer. And that “2001″ introduction at Williams-Brice Stadium was pretty tired back in … well, 2001.

But Auburn, as we know, has become the new standard in raised eyebrows, what with Fairley’s repeated slams of  Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray (see YouTube video below) to the series of revelations/allegations that led to Newton being declared ineligible by Auburn. (He was re-instated, after a timeout of one day, by the NCAA.)

Viewed alongside strutting Auburn, the Gamecocks seem rather gentlemanly.  So now I’m asking a question I never thought I’d ask: Georgia fans, are you rooting for Spurrier?

Or, put another way, is there really a cold front bearing down on Hades?

I always respected Spurrier. He’d beat you, right after he told you how he was going to beat you. At the time UGA had Ray Goff. What did Uga have to complain about? Urban Crier, that’s a different story! And I don’t care what you AU folks think, EVERYONE thinks Fairley is dirty and that your QB is paid for. You, AU, are the new Thug U! Go Gamecocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carolina…..I wouldn’t pull for Auburn with two engines out on the team plane. They are dirty–just like they have always been–and all the white-wash and backroom deals the NCAA makes to protect their golden BCS nest egg will not make them clean….The whole thing is a farce….and if Auburn fans or the NCAA or anyone else believes that A) the Newtons got nothing or B) poor innocent lap-top stealing, cheating, Cam knew nothing about what his father was doing—they are morons. Cam is innocent just like O.J. was innocent. There is no justice whatsoever in this decision.

Personally, I have never bought into the whole “I’m pulling for a team so they can represent the SEC in the BCS Championship game.” Who freaking cares? Can’t stand Spurrier either so I don’t really care who wins. But I will be watching to see how many times Cam Newton lays on the field like he’s hurt after getting tackled. He did that repeatedly in the Iron Bowl and should’ve been flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The crux of this article is all UGA fans can ever hope for, decide who to cheer for in the SEC title games….of course it is all about being a part of the glorious SEC. Again, UGA is like having the ugliest home in an upscale neighborhood, no matter what they try and do, they just cannot get thier mobile home looking respectable.

Also, Gruden has turned down the Miami job, the CMR should be on deck and up next. CMR is going to reject any Miami claims until after bowl season, but word has it that he will go to Miami if offered he job, then win a title within 5 years after arriving in Miami.

As an Auburn fan, this year has been the greatest ever. Now Auburn has whupped the DullDawgs three times already. Once 49-31, once 28-27 when the Dawgs all became Bamzos For A Day, a third time when Cam Newton got cleared, and number four will come tomorrow when all the “‘Cocks For A Day” get to lose to Auburn again.

“if Nick Fairley was a Dawg, he’d be a rock star in Georgia.”~~Buck Belue

12-0 and headed for more….It’s great to be an Auburn Tiger!

You guys are a bunch of maroons. You have focused all of the shortcomings of a terrible season on Nick Fairley and Cam Newton. You should blame the real culprit for the arrests and terrible season: the strength and conditioning coach. Fire the rascal and things will get better, just like the defense got better when Richt fired Martinez. Continued whining about Fairley and the NCAA will surely lead to a better record next season. Maybe even seven wins.

The FBI has yet to release the conclusions of their investigation to the NCAA, let Auburn win it all so that they are devastated when it’s all taken away. Seems like every National Championship Auburn “Claims” is surrounded by controversy.

Jim…..Most UGA, UF, AU, UT, SC, UA etc do have class. Agree most of what we see here is a joke. Like anything, as hard as it is, we cant group the majority with the few we see here. Go Gators…Go Spurrier…..plain and simple…lets have a great game and hopefully the best team wins (ala no bad calls from SEC officials..please :)

Hey Auburn Man, UGA may have needed to block better, but when you count 1 one thousand, 2 one thousand…….starting after the ball has left the QB’s hand, and your still getting hit in the back (cowardly) only one way to slice it, dirty play, and also driving the QB to the ground, knowing the ball has left his hand, is even more dirty. Yeah right, it is all about blocking, at that point has nothing to do with blocking. Think they aught to check that kid for “…roids” as out of control and angry as he plays, just ask Jefferson/QB from LSU as well, different game, different opponent, same dirty play from the same Auburn player, something stinks somewhere.

It won’t matter if au wins because it will all be taken away from them before long. Everyone they played this year will improve their record when they have to forfeit ALL of their 2010 games. never, ever will I pull for Steve Superior to win anything. Auburn is probably dirty but until proven I gotta go with them. Every fanbase has obnoxious clowns so I don’t hold that against a team either. Get it done Tygres. I’m sure Brandon Cox has no problem with Fairley. As a The OSU fan, I find all this chatter interesting. Both USC and AU are minor blips on the overall college football landscape. These teams will be back to their mediocre ways next season, while the more standard barer programs like OSU, Bama, FL, LSU, OU, UT, etc… will be back on top. But to answer MB’s question, I guess I’ll lean for the chickens.

Auburn wins big and heads to Glendale. Thugga fans continue to be jealous and complain about nick fairley for the next four years. Mark Richt stays at thugga for one more year only to go 7-5 and gets fired. Thugga hires the boom from Texas. Thugaa rebuilding for the next three years. Florida continues its dominance in the east for years to come.

I saw Auburn man comments. HUGE difference in lineman late hitting, cut blocking and dirty playing on the line of scrimmage, and defensive linemen taking cheap shots at the QB who cannot defend himself because he is throwing or has just thrown the ball. The guy is back there defenseless and UNFairley is lowing his helmet, there are at least three incidents should on that short clip of the guy hitting murray with his helmet lowered. But he has been doing ALL SEASON LONG, and the SEC officials give him a pass. Seems if you are undefeated SEC officials call a different game. IMHO.

I am for Carolina. I hate Spurrier but I hope he pulls a rabbit out his backside and stuns the War chicken nation.

“Think they aught to check that kid for “…roids” ”

I’ve actually thought the same thing. The way he came out of nowhere AND they way he won’t let up even when he’s supposed to. He doesn’t care that the ball is gone and he was sufficiently blocked. In his mind it’s like this “I worked to hard not to get my hit in on him. I’m going to hit.” . It will probably never be proven, but I highly suspect it. Besides, with everything else going on at Auburn why shouldn’t they stoop to steroids too?

The funny thing about this whole Cam situation is that people were saying Auburn fans were crazy to think that the media was out to ruin their season with hit pieces but all the thugga fans think that Auburn the SEC and the NCAA are part of some vast conspiricy to cover up a play for play sceam. Its laughable.
