"Good luck, Stevie boy. We're all counting on you." (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
Three years ago yours truly paid a midweek visit to Columbia, S.C., for Steve Spurrier’s weekly briefing. Toward the end, I mentioned that a brand new AJC.com poll had just reconfirmed that the Ol’ Ball Coach was — ahead of even Urban Meyer, who was coming off a BCS title — the man Georgia fans most loved to hate.
“Glad they haven’t forgotten me,” said Spurrier, who seemed pleased.
Postscript: Four days later, Spurrier and South Carolina came to Sanford Stadium and beat Georgia 16-12.
The Bulldogs have nothing to do with this year’s SEC championship game, which will be staged Saturday at the Georgia Dome. (Fun fact: Seven different SEC schools have qualified for the title game since last Georgia did in 2005.) But Spurrier will be here, and he might actually be the sentimental favorite. Because here are your choices:
• In one corner, the Evil Genius and his Gamecock minions, who are new to this championship thing.
• In the other, RoboCoach Gene Chizik and Nick UnFairley and, lest we forget, Cam Newton.
Auburn fans love their team. Almost nobody else does. Let’s state for the record that Newton is the nation’s best player and Fairley its best defender, but we also must concede that the Tigers lead the world in irrational exuberance.
This isn’t to say South Carolina has been without sin. Tight end Weslye Sanders was kicked off the team without playing a down this season, and several Gamecocks apparently got the William Shatner rate at Columbia’s Whitney Hotel over the summer. And that “2001″ introduction at Williams-Brice Stadium was pretty tired back in … well, 2001.
But Auburn, as we know, has become the new standard in raised eyebrows, what with Fairley’s repeated slams of Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray (see YouTube video below) to the series of revelations/allegations that led to Newton being declared ineligible by Auburn. (He was re-instated, after a timeout of one day, by the NCAA.)
Viewed alongside strutting Auburn, the Gamecocks seem rather gentlemanly. So now I’m asking a question I never thought I’d ask: Georgia fans, are you rooting for Spurrier?
Or, put another way, is there really a cold front bearing down on Hades?

Most of the free world will be (reluctantly) pulling for SC tomorrow (the evil of two lessers). As witnessed on ESPN countless times this season Auburn has been having a fairy tale season (or should I say a farley tailed season). Cam probably has the talent to get them by but doesn’t he remind you of JaMarcus Russell? Hope karma shines on war tiger eagle……whatever tomorrow. Maybe they can play Boise in the Almost National Championship(not to be confused with the BCS). Not hatin, just statin.

How is blind loyalty by a fan to a college football team dangerous?

Spurrier still remembers who embarrased and destroyed him in 1966 in the Gator Bowl…that is one of the reasons he wanted to exact the punishmnet on Georgia every chance he got. The Dawgs crapped on his Heisman/Senior year…Go Dawgs!!!! Ask Spurrier who Bill Stanfill, George Patton, and Happy Dicks are??
Chizik and his thugs will get there due before this season is over with!!!!! I’d hate to be Auburn next year when they bring their chain gang to Athens!!!! I can see the pictures/posters/etc. in the Georgia weight room…there will be hell to pay…. you bunch of low life plains’billies!!!!! Murray is going to light up Auburn so much…they’ll think Sherman is back in town!!!! Go you hairy Dawgs!!!

Don’t worry all you Cam haters he will get his next year when he turns out to be the next Vince Young and looses is mind because no one is licking his toes anymore because he is really just a big athlete who is not a real QB. I’m going to feel sorry for Buffalo when they draft him next year! As for AU their obviously living it up right now because although we may go to the toilet bowl every year, all this feel good their feeling right now will have them going to possibly O bowl games in the next 5, just wait and see!!

Must be absolutely killing thUGA’s to root for Spurrier, know the history of hate where he’s concerned.
Guess that speaks VOLUMES about how they’re still smarting over the beat-down given to them on November 13th.
How funny. Childish indeed, but still downright humorous.

And they should also retroactively instate AJ Green and give UGA the games they lost without him. Then UGA would be in the game this weekend, go ahead and buy your tickets.

Auburn has a mascot. Just because you don’t have two brain cells to figure it out, doesn’t mean anything.

Who cares how many mascots Auburn has, is that really the best you have?
Id rather have 5 than a dog with a lifespan of 2 years that requires ice cubes to be shoved up its behind to stay cool because, after hundreds of years of inbreeding it still hasnt developed the capacity to cool itself adequately.

You should ask me that question after Cam is gone and your football program and school is dealing with the fall out. “IF” the dots are connected and the punishment at the very least is the death penalty and at the most admonishment from the SEC, was the Cam loyalty worth it? It’s a yes or no question, take your time

This is a silly question because the answer is obvious. The beat down the whiners took from Auburn is still fresh and their pain and anguish is so overwhelming, they’ll all pull for one of the other teams that embarrassed them this season. Ain’t gonna happen. Your anguish continues. War Eagle!

…comical to watch the Plainsmen blindly defend their team, blame it all on UGA (still can’t figure that one out–inferiority complex, I guess) and ignore the rest of the country that also thinks Cam is guilty and that the program is as dirty as they come. Even the ESPN commentators that love Cam always caveat their statements with a disclaimer that it could all come to an end.

You didn’t answer the question. Instead you asked one but, I’ll answer it anyway. Your loyalty certainly comes across as blind loyalty. As in, “we stand behind him no matter the allegations. because he’s the savior and anyone that plays like he does is AU’s messiah” That’s a slippery slope. Toot the horns and let the confetti fly amid the allegations. There may still be the Piper to pay and who do you think will pay it?
The allegations didn’t come out of thin air. There is “some” degree of substance to them. If I were an AU fan, “I” would want to know

Now I don’t know, and I certainly don’t think so, but it’s been rumored a certain bully from Auburn likes wearing red lipstick and red panties in the confines of his football dorm room. It has also been rumored a certain AD was going to give that bully the red panties he had if that mean old cop had not messed things up, thus the reason the bully was so uptight at the UGA game. Ah such is the love between UGA and AU.
