Cam’s the man in college football, and now he’s free to play

BREAKING NEWS: The NCAA has ruled Cam Newton eligible. Technically the NCAA ruled him ineligible for one day and has reinstated him. Another post is upcoming.

Auburn, Ala.  – The wayfaring journey of Cameron Jerrell Newton has turned for home: From College Park and Westlake High to Florida and Auburn with a Texas junior college in between, and now back to Atlanta for Saturday’s SEC championship. It should be one of the happiest stories in the history of the sport, but its hero has gone missing in plain sight.

Auburn’s coach was asked Tuesday when the best player in college football might again be made available to the media, something that hasn’t happened for two weeks. Said Gene Chizik: “I’m going to stay on the path of commenting directly on his play.”

A reporter noted that  SEC rules call for every player to be available for interviews after the title game and asked if Auburn would comply with league policy. Chizik: “I’m going to stay on the path of making comments on the championship game or the previous 12 games.”

More intriguing was how often Chizik, in the course of a 33-minute briefing, mentioned his best player by name — once. (He called him “Cameron.”) Asked  by this correspondent if playing such a massive game in his hometown might heighten the pressure on Newton to an unbearable level, Chizik didn’t even deploy the third-person singular, meaning “he” or “him”, in his response. He went plural, both in the first and third person, all the way.

Chizik: “We’ve had a lot of big moments to get to this point, in my opinion, as a team and individually … We’ve all kind of been here before at some point in the other games. I think that’s big for us, and I think that’s big for our players individually. I’m hoping that this would not be any different. They don’t give me any reason to believe they’ll respond differently.”

Weird. You cannot take two steps in the Loveliest Village of the Plain without hearing or seeing some mention of Cam Newton. (See the example above, photographed outside Momma Goldberg’s Deli — home of the “Pastrama Momma” — on Thach Avenue.) No serious discussion of college football can commence anywhere in these United States without lip service being paid to the irresistible Tiger quarterback. Yet it’s as if the man who coaches Newton dare not speak his name.

Given the twists in this tale, Auburn’s skittishness is understandable. Since the first ESPN report on Nov. 4 that the former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond (formerly of Valdosta) had been told it would cost serious money for Newton to play for the Bulldogs, the Tigers have awaited the next shoe dropping. Who knew Newton’s story housed more shoes than Imelda Marcos’ closet?

We’ve heard from two more MSU voices, the ex-players Kenny Rogers and Bill Bell. We’ve been informed by FoxSports.com that Newton left Florida under suspicion of cheating. We’ve heard, via Mark Winne of Channel 2 Action News, that Newton’s father Cecil has admitted to someone that he sought money from Mississippi State. The air (and airwaves) became so charged it wasn’t clear if Cam Newton would play against Georgia on Nov. 13 until he took part in the pregame Tiger Walk, leaping and shouting and high-fiving, and entered Jordan-Hare Stadium, pausing to kneel at the goalpost.

Newton was great that day, greater still against hated Alabama in Tuscaloosa last week. The Tigers trailed 24-0, won 28-27. Asked if Newton’s performance had been “one for the ages,” Chizik again took the big-picture tack: “At some point we’re going to have a chance to breathe and look back and realize how monumental that was … I don’t know how many teams in the course of history would have been able to do that.”

Win Saturday and Newton’s team will play for the BCS title in Glendale, Ariz., on Jan. 10. That is, however, a long way off — plenty of time for more investigative work, more  allegations. Newton will surely have to break his silence when he wins the Heisman Trophy, which is announced Dec. 11, but even then the man of the year in college football is apt to remain a man of mystery.

On Tuesday, the tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen, who’s from Lassiter High in Marietta, spoke of and essentially for his quarterback. “Business as usual for Cam is basically straight goofball,” Lutzenkirchen told reporters. “He’s always joking around, always messing with everyone. That hasn’t changed at all throughout this year.”

As for Newton himself: The son of a preacher is holding his peace. Asked if the most valuable and visible Tiger was planning to address the media, a helpful Auburn staffer pointed to the entrance of the Athletic Center and said: “He’s going to walk through that door … and keep on going.”

Mark,

No one would ask questions about the game. You know that. I’m looking forward to the game and rooting for Cam and Auburn. Cam because he’s exciting and Auburn because I’m a fan of the SEC.

I want Auburn to win Saturday because I can’t stand South Carolina and I’d like to see another SEC National Champion, but this is all going to end terribly. It will come out that Cam was paid. So then who gets the SEC title if they win? South Carolina? Really? By far not the best team. Auburn football is going down and that smiling qb could careless. He’s off to get a real check. So conceited. Sometimes I feel bad for Auburn fans, but hey, you get what you pay for.

Mike Slive and the SEC have too much money at stake to allow sCam to be investigated now. While all of the facts presented on the epic “As the Plains Burn” thread on TigerDroppings.com may be true, Slive and the NCAA are in fear of what the reality of these allegations would do to now only the Barn but the SEC as well. Millions of $ lost, and we all know NCAAF is all about the money.

Ted M, would you “care about the recruiting crap” if it were happening at Bama?!?! Of course you would. Cheating is cheating is cheating. And it has to be dealt with or else you can stick a fork in college football. I’ll venture to say that many schools bend the rules. But Auburn has taken it to levels that boggle the mind. All in an attempt to be seen as “as good as Bama”. From all of the WDE’s I hear from Aubies, I’m not sure most of you realize how serious this is.

We all know Nick Fairley is the biggest CHEAP SHOT ARTIST in the SEC and that the Barn cheats with the Son of a Preacher Man, sCam – I agree with 42-34 above that the SEC and NCAA have too much money to lose to expose sCam and the Victoryland/Lowder scandal at this point even though it is true. An epic cover-up to protect the cheating Barners at all costs.

Hope you enjoy that $200,000 championship you bought Chizik and the Barn!

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why this has become the story that it is. To this point, there is no indication of money being paid to Newton. If evidence surfaces to that effect, then we have something. But until then, to me this seems like nothing but talk and empty promises.

When he wins the Heisman? Didn’t realize it was a “sure thing”. I think some of the voters still have questions about his integrity. He is a great football player but that does not take that little line out of the voting that deals with the example he has set or his integrity. I have to disagree with anyone who says that the NCAA will not bring the facts to light that the FBI and their own investigation uncovers. They have to. The facts will come out and if the NCAA has buried them because of money, they will no longer be an effective governing body. They’ll release the findings and they’ll have to punish accordingly. And what punishment can you delve out to a program with as many major inftactions as AU that will make them finally adhere to the rules?

T-Bone, have you read the history of Auburn football? If so none of this should suprise you. At the time of Tuberville’s firing Auburn was stacked with talent from top recruiting classes. SEC powerhouse. If you are an SEC powerhouse you can pretty much pick a top rated coach from anywhere in the country and pay him. Where did Auburn go? Iowa State to get Chizik (5-19 record). Why? Because Chizik was former DC under Tuberville and was well aware of the “Auburn Way” when it came to getting top notch recruits.

The program on the plains has been hit by the NCAA for PROVEN violations as much or more than ANY program in America over the years. Even the only recognized National Title was not won on the field because of major sanctions way back then. I’m not here to say that many, many programs including UGA do not commit violations, but you have to admit that Auburn is being judged a little more harshly because of past PROVEN major violations. Let’s see here: Kenny Rogers is a street agent that’s trying to stay out of jail in Mississippi for extortion and passing bad checks. He’s already changed his story three times. Did Bond and Rogers discuss the alleged Newton deal or haven’t they talked in 20 years? Both can’t be true.

Even Rogers with all his lying has said he knows of no connection to Auburn.

A good story in the Houston Chronicle exposed the lie about Newton’s acadenic problems at Florida. And guess what? That article has actual sources that are willing to give their names and job titles, not some imaginary “anonymous source”.

This whole thing has gone much better since Auburn started “no commenting” the press. Auburn and Cam Newton should continue that, considering the odd twists and lack of concern for the truth that some “journalists” have demonstrated.

There is no investigation of Auburn University’s recruitment of Cam Newton. You guys need to accept that. If there is a problem, MSU has that problem.

WindderDogg,

What are you? Like 18? I was AT that game in 86 when Auburn was FORCED to turn on the water cannons. After Georgia won that day, the entire student section on the Georgia side emptied out, scaled the field fence and ran to the center of our turf and began pulling it up. The only way to get those leghumpers to stop digging up the lawn was to get their attention. And just like good little puppies, they retreated. Turf upkeep at a stadium is huge money. We’d do it again.

Who can blame Auburn or Cam Newton for staying away from the media at this point. The “media” has been practicing without a license in this “investigation.” All of these sports reporters think they are Woodward, but the difference is Woodward demanded to see “evidence” first hand before he reported it. True, he protected his “source”, but he knew the source was highly credible.

Cam Newton is accused of cheating at Florida. This has been denied by Florida, but the media runs with it anyway. Cam Newton’s father is accused of sending text messages asking for money. But the messages actually came from an employee for an unscrupulous agent who is losing his standing with the NFL. The MSU booster who received the messages said he can’t produce them now because his phone doesn’t work. Kenny Rogers is losing his ability to make a living with NFL players, so perhaps he is trying to run scams with college players to pay the bills. Why the media doesn’t crawl all over this guy is beyond me. He has ruined the best college football story of the last 10 years, but his credibility is never challenged.

Mark, please use your platform to investigate MSU boosters (former players, whatever) taking phone calls about recruits during recruiting season. Please investigate Kenny Rogers, who is in the business of “matching” college players with schools. He said he approached the Newtons pro-actively. How does he make a living “matching” players with colleges? Who pays for that service? Does he do this service for free? For future influence as an agent if the player turns pro?

Reinstatement decisions are independent of the NCAA enforcement process and typically are made once the facts of the student-athlete’s involvement are determined. The reinstatement process is likely to conclude prior to the close of an investigation.
This is a temporary position to save the BCS game from scandal. The hammer will still come down. Count on it.

I also agree with 42-34, and will take the argument a step further. This whole mess has the potential to bring down not only Auburn, and the SEC but also the BCS. If Auburn wins the SEC and Oregon finishes undefeated, the BCS & NCAA now OWN the problem.

Maybe Auburn planned it this way and that’s a bit of evil genius. They went all in on CM and made it the SEC’s problem by not suspending. Slive and company are cowards and did nothing pushing the problem down the road.

The only way the powers that be get out of this is if Auburn loses Saturday. If not, then they have to choose between the money or integrity. What do you people think will happen?

Let me remind you that no one has YET to point the finger at Auburn for doing anything wrong, NOR Cam Newton directly, it’s been all about his father Cecil, that unfortunately, sucks for Cam and Auburn. As far as how big of a deal this is, if we hadn’t been winning this season, there wouldn’t be near the talk there is right now, but since we are undefeated, you guys act like the world is coming to an end. Aubie, being eligible is not the same thing as having integrity. I have no problem with him playing football, I have a problem with him receiving a reward when he has shown a clear pattern of dishonestly. Cheating, stealing, etc. BTW, in case you don’t understand what the word integrity means, he is not it. Not rumors of dishonestly, being found guilty. Yes, charges were dropped only after he completed what was court ordered. The fact that it was 2 years ago does not change that. Yes, we all make mistakes but not all of us think it is ok to steal at any age. Is he really the example you think we should set for our kids?

Maybe now the “investigation” by the esteemed members of the sports journalism fraternity will begin to focus, rightly, on Kenny Rogers. This guy should be put under the “media” microscope about approaching MSU boosters to aid in the recruitment of players during recruiting season. Only coaches can recruit, according the Dan Mullen. Kenny Rogers basically “outed” Messrs. Bell and Bond as the boosters to see at Miss State for $$$$. For the love of Jackie Sherrill, these guys are not angels with golden wings.

Maybe the price Rogers was asking for was too rich for Bell and Bond, but Rogers knew who to call, didn’t he . . . .

Auburn, Oklahoma, and Tennessee have all said nobody asked them for money regarding Newton. Kenny Rogers is a MSU connection. He was trying to get Newton to sign with his school. The school where he has a rooting interest.

The NCAA, Auburn and MSU have agreed that Cecil Newton and Kenny Rodgers were shopping Cam around. Cam was declared ineligible on Monday. He has now been declared eligible – “Based on the information available to the reinstatement staff at this time, we do not have sufficient evidence that Cam Newton or anyone from Auburn was aware of this activity, which led to his reinstatement”.
The full press release (link and extract below) is less than a full vindication of Auburn and Cam Newton.

http://www.ncaa.org/wps/portal/ncaahome?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/ncaa/ncaa/media+and+events/press+room/news+release+archive/2010/official+statements/20101201+cam+newton+rls

“Our members have established rules for a fair and equal recruitment of student-athletes, as well as to promote integrity in the recruiting process,” said Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president for academic and membership affairs. “In determining how a violation impacts a student-athlete’s eligibility, we must consider the young person’s responsibility. Based on the information available to the reinstatement staff at this time, we do not have sufficient evidence that Cam Newton or anyone from Auburn was aware of this activity, which led to his reinstatement. From a student-athlete reinstatement perspective, Auburn University met its obligation under NCAA bylaw 14.11.1. Under this threshold, the student-athlete has not participated while ineligible.”

This is the problem the NCAA is grappling with. If there is no proof that money changed hands, only an offer of money, how could the NCAA stop renegade boosters like me from ruining the eligibility of rival players and their schools? The key here is PROOF that money changed hands. So far, the NCAA and the FBI have not found it, despite examining bank records of the parties involved. NCAA by-laws govern anyone who represents an institution, that could be a car salesman or whoever. If money does not change hands, but influence of future financial gains do…a violation has occurred.

If a party representing that player, such as his parents, takes money. A violation occurred. ex. Reggie Bush….I would say student-athletes and parents need to understand the consequences of illegal recruiting. Obviously Cecil chose to ignore and take a chance. If they can get him, they will because Cam and Auburn is on top of college football. If Auburn was 4-8, it would probably not matter and they would get away with it unless Auburn complained they didn’t get their money’s worth and who would do that….

The ONLY reason the FBI was involved was because of the corruption between Milton McGregor/VictoryLand and the buying of gambling/casino votes from the State of Alabama politicians. McGregor could have EASILY been a booster for Bama. His affitliation with Auburn is NOT the reason for the investigation. Now, if you REALLY want to dig deep, most of those good ole’ boys down in the Montgomery courthouse ARE Crimson Tide supporters generations DEEP! So while you THINK you know what’s going on, be careful what you wish for. Those politicians have their own booster connections in Tuscaloosa and once the FBI is done, you’re likely to see heads roll all the way from the Montgomery Capitol Courthouse and all the way to Tuscaloosa.

the NCAA doesn’t want TCU in the national championship game. they’d get lower ratings and less money than they’d get with AU in the championship game. So they reinstate Cam Newton in hopes that AU beats SC and advances to the national championship game therefore keeping TCU out. If SC wins and TCU jumps AU in the polls I’ll bet you the NCAA finds a bunch of connections between Cam and the money real quick.

What if ……. Kenny Rogers sent the text messages asking for money, and then had to report back to Cecil Newton that Miss State said “not only no, He!# no.” But Miss State kept recruiting Newton anyway.

Then, as a next step, Auburn and Oklahoma started recruiting Newton, but they are “rogue” programs and don’t have the luxury of getting in trouble anymore. So, Auburn and Oklahoma recruit Newton straight up – you know, with tradition, stadiums, game day festivities – and the Newtons pick Auburn because it is only 90 minutes from Newnan, GA.

Not much of a scandal, but this is probably how it happened at the end of the day. Auburn’s fat cat boosters all have bigger problems right now than winning football games. Which is a blessing for us normal AU alumni who manage to keep it all in perspective.

Under this threshold, the student-athlete has not participated while ineligible.”

if someone compensated daddy newton in order to get his son to auburn it will take time, more than has transpired, to get to the bottom of it. the million dollar question is why would he shop cam to one school and not another? something changed his mind, good or bad. when that gets answered then this story will be put to rest.

Slow down all you bickering idiots…..The real investigation has just started. The NCAA has no real investigative power. You can “no comment” those guys with no real consequences to you individually. Yes, they can interview coaches and players etc., but big deal. Just wait until the FBI starts asking more and more questions. You better answer, and it better be accurate. No one is going to prison for lying to the FBI just to cover up a little recruiting violation. The FBI doesnt give a damn about football or a bowl game. They have bigger things they are looking at, and they will take their time doing an investigation. You heard it here….By the time this is over Cam Newton will be in the NFL, and he will personally admit that he was paid to go to Auburn, and the complete story will go down as the worst black eye in college sports history because Auburn is going to have more problems than just paying CAM. Everyone knows the AJ Green situation was a farse… the NCAA couldn’t allow there to be a precedence for athletes all over the country to start making money off their jerseys. He should have been forced to turn over any proceeds to charity and received a smack on the wrist. The whole thing was VERY cut-and-dry, but the NCAA abused its authority to make a point.

Cam’s situation is not at all cut-and-dry. His Father’s a greedy cult leader and a hypocrite if the professes to do “God’s work”. Cam’s a glory-monger, but no worse than Peyton Manning or Desmond Howard were. Cam just plays… and he plays well. I don’t know why he came to AU, but his Daddy probably wanted him nearby, he wanted good offensive players around him, a top-notch OC in Malzahn, and a place that desparately needed a star at QB. There’s no way it was for money because unless it’s cash hiding under a mattress in College Park, it is pretty easy to find a paper trail – especially if it was used to renovate Dad’s Neverland Ranch.

But regardless, what fuels this debate is that those who want to see a star fall from grace will only watch that small point in the sky. I’m happy Cam’s eligible because he’s a great player. If you’re looking to a 21-year old college kid to be your role model… I feel very badly for you. College students are not saints… except maybe at BYU.

As far as the Victoryland guy and Bobby Lowder are concerned… I hope they fry. You will find that despite Lowder’s name above the Business School, many Auburn faithful have nothing positive to say about him.

Overall a sad day for college football – potentially athletics in general, whether or not Auburn is guilty, problem is NCAA is basically saying there was wrong doing by Newton Sr. but only him, so he becomes the scape goat, and why does he care, misses two more games in person, son goes on to make millions in NFL, no one is accountable. Sad Part? How much will this begin to happen, at least much more in the open, all you have to say is I didn’t know anything about it, but my Dad did. Just go ahead and state that they are being paid, and get it over with, much more creditable, better yet…NFL is looking better all the time, at least you know where they stand, and that they are making a lot of money, fair playing field, college football no longer is anywhere near this, most money wins, and just deny it. If you are good enough it will all be Ok, sad. Becoming harder and harder to teach young kids virtue in sports, guess that is just being too simple.

I think each of you should be punished for something your parents did. If they went to jail, you should go to jail. If they got a speeding ticket, you should be fined. If they have ever done anything wrong without proof of your knowledge, you should be punished for it.
Is that what I’m reading?
Yes, Cecil was wrong for what he did and he should be punished. But to talk trash about Auburn and Cam when the facts show they’ve done nothing is just ignorant and childish. Take your loss and move on to next season.

Bottom line is the NCAA says rules were broken and even confirms this with him being ruled ineligible by AU. But even after that, the NCAA immediately turns around and says “who cares a rule was broken?” and lets him go. This is insane. Some schools have the book thrown at them for rules being broken. Green gets blasted for selling a jersey but when Reverend Newton pimps his son off they get a pass? Cam may not have been paid but Daddy sure looks to be guilty. I still don’t see how all of this went on without Cam not knowing anything. You’re telling me daddy went on secret trips and had secret calls and Cam knew nothing? And Bonds or any of these other characters did not ask Cam or mention this in passing? The NCAA better hope Auburn loses on Saturday or what is left of their credibility is buried.

I believe if any actual money had crossed the Newton’s hands, it would have surfaced by now. None of this will stop Auburn from winning the SEC title, and Cam going on to a successful NFL career. I hope Auburn is not sanctioned after the fact…so far this is the case of smoke with no fire. None of this can take away from what he and Auburn has accomplished. Cam Newton is a rare talent, has been an absolute joy to watch and he has endured more scutiny than most of these punk arse bloggers will experience their entire lives. The scent of sour grapes is in the air for everyone wishing him and Auburn any ill will. Get over it.

COVER-UP…this is a sham to keep the SECCG and the NCG between the SEC and PAC-10. To quote from the NCAA news release “When a school discovers an NCAA rules violation has occurred, it must declare the student-athlete ineligible and may request the student-athlete’s eligibility be reinstated. Reinstatement decisions are made by the NCAA national office staff and can include conditions such as withholding from competition and repayment of extra benefits. Newton was reinstated without any conditions.” I am curious as to what new information was released yesterday that led Auburn to declare $cam in-eligible that was not in the public view 3-4 weeks ago and I am definitely surprised on how quickly the NCAA was able to rule on this considering they took MONTHS in other cases this year and YEARS in the Bush case. By Auburn’s actions of declaring Newton in-eligible, they should be forced to vacate the victories over UGA and Alabama when the news broke which would still place a 2 loss Auburn in the SECCG (tie breakers with victories over LSU and Arkansas cannot punish Auburn for games before “they knew” $cam was the son-of-a-soliciting preacher man), with no hopes of competing for the NCG. So let me understand this properly; a jersey, worth $1000 is a 4 game suspension, an air flight to Miami and being treated to a weekend in the sun is a 2 game suspension and solicitation of 150-200K is 0 games and 1 day in-eligible? Contrary to Mr. Slive’s remark “The actions taken by Auburn University and Mississippi State University make it clear this behavior will not be tolerated in the SEC.”, I think it proves exactly the opposite, the more money the less time you will be penalized.

UGA and Bama fans are pathetic. Bama had a former Heisman trophy winner and a QB who had not lost since junior high, plus Julio Jones and still lost 3 games this year. The only thing UGA excels at is drinking and getting arrested. Keep whining when Cam wins the Heisman and Chizik wins coach of the year and AU wins the national championship. Rogers approaches Cecil like he does with any and every athlete he comes across that has NFL talent. He says, I can’t guarantee it but I’d like to see if my buddies will help with money for your son. Cecil says, we’ll see where this goes. Rogers makes the calls, nothing comes of it and Cecil moves on. Fact that Cam was, briefly, ineligible, but yet Auburn has forfeited no games…

The NCAA has ZERO MANDATORY penalties for violations of the amateurism rules. This is FACT. They make the punishment fit the crime.

Here, the athlete did nothing wrong…other than have a father who, in a lapse of reason, did something very, very stupid.

So why was he declared ineligible at all? Well, if Auburn tells Cecil Newton never to set foot on Auburn’s campus, or to keep his distance from all current and future football events, etc., they have to have a damn good reason to do it. Likewise, MSU had to have a legitimate reason to disassociate Kenny Rogers. If either institution had taken that action without justification, they’d have been civilly liable to the parties so dealt with.

What this shows you is that Auburn University has been TOTALLY compliant with this entire process from the beginning, likely in January of 2010 or even earlier…that Auburn University dotted its I’s and crossed its T’s and did a roto-rooter on this whole thing, and when they came back CLEAN, they did the HONORABLE thing and didn’t punish the student athlete involved, and STUCK TO THEIR GUNS.

The NCAA quite clearly has been telling Auburn what would likely transpire, and I have zero doubts that Newton being ruled ineligible one day and being reinstated the next was simply the agreement that the parties reached.

The punishment fit the crime. The responsible parties received a comeuppance. The innocent party in this keeps his good name, his athletic and acamdemic standing, and Auburn Univerty is shown to be a champion of the enforcement process.

That’s not what will be said by those who desire to tear down, to destroy, but that is EXACTLY what happened, without variance.

Smile proudly Auburn men and women, your University did you proud today, and continues to do so.

AU declares Cam INELIGIBLE the Tuesday after their biggest game of the year, when this has been out for a month. Then the NCAA declares him eligible the next day? Sounds fishy to me. AJ Green was held out of UGA’s first game because the NCAA took months to investigate a sold jersey, and still didn’t wrap up the investigation until after the season. But AU declares Cam ineligible on Tuesday and Wednesday morning the NCAA has wrapped up everything. I don’t buy it. NCAA doesn’t want this over the Heisman Trophy and potentially the Championship Game, so this gives AU cover until January.

Whether Cam is cleared by the NCAA or not doesn’t matter since his father admitted to soliciting his son. Because of SEC bylaws regarding improper benefits to student-athletes Cam SHOULD be declared ineligible. But of course since the SEC doesn’t want to lose any money we won’t see anything with regards to that matter until after the season.

“If at any time before or after matriculation in a member institution a student-athlete or any member of his/her family receives or agrees to receive, directly or indirectly, any aid or assistance beyond or in addition to that permitted by the Bylaws of this Conference (except such aid or assistance as such student-athlete may receive from those persons on whom the student is naturally or legally dependent for support), such student- athlete shall be ineligible for competition in any intercollegiate sport within the Conference for the remainder of his/her college career.”

I understand that Auburn declared Cam ineligible then applied for reinstatement and that the application was handled very quickly. Presumably, everyone agreed that neither Auburn nor Cam Newton were aware of the prior, presumably failed, pimping attempt. Agree with it or not, it at least makes sense.
The question that I can’t get my head around is whether the NCAA agrees that Auburn only had enough info to act this week. I mean what did they learn this week that made them decide that Cam was ineligle that they didn’t know last week or the week before?

Seems very strange that Butch Davis will probably lose his job because a tutor completed papers for football players. Yet rewind the tape and…well maybe it’s because it is the SEC and Urban Meyer and Cam Newton and well, you get the picture….suddenly a bought paper on the internet and stealing laptops and whoa…yet another paper turned in that a tutor did…and NOTHING happens. If I am a law firm in Chapel Hill I leave my lines open. Why the contradictory penalties from the NCAA????

Thought I’d address WinderDogg glowingly unbiased hate post:

“I hate Auburn for the following..

1) stealing the hedges idea – I wasn’t aware UGA had a patent on bushes.
2) stealing our fight song – Wrong. Auburn actually has a fight song called “War Eagle”. You don’t even know what your fight song is apparently, because it isn’t Glory to Ole Georgia, which incidentally stole it’s music from the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
3) spraying me with water – Nothing smells worse than a wet dog, and you deserved it if you were one of the fans on the field trying to rip up the sod.
4) Pat Dye – So you hate your own? We don’t hate Dooley, get over it.
5) Orange – Orange is the new red.
6) Fans are so stupid to not see a crime in front of their face. – What crime is that?
7) Scam
8) Bo is not better than Herschel – Disagree, but who cares?
9) Having two mascots – We have one mascot, but you don’t even know your own fight song so I’m not surprised by you speaking out of ignorance.
10) Making a mockery out of college football this season….0 wins and a staff full of cheaters. – Exactly how has Auburn cheated? You must have failed reading comprehension, because I haven’t seen anyone but butthurt rival fans say Auburn has cheated.

Love Auburn because I was there when sugar fell from the sky….

I am missing something here? Was the NCAA rules broken that would have disqualified him from playing by the actions of his father or not? I thought any stipulation or request for monetary compensation on behalf of a player was the rule that was broken. If so, then how, after his father admitted to the infraction, is he not disqualified? I am not asking this question because I want to see him sit or a program punished but if the rules apply to others, aka going to a party on someone else’s dime or selling of personal property, then why not in this instance regardless of the team or person? After witnessing how the NCAA handled the AJ Green incident with all its grace and speed I can not see how they can come out and say he is or is not eligible for the SEC Championship game or any game he has participated in till now. The NCAA needs to say one way or another if the rule was broken and gives a detailed reason one way or another. If the investigation is not complete then how can they say anything? I will enjoy the SEC Championship game and the National Championship game but really hope that this dark cloud hovering over not only AU but the SEC as a whole is resolved and sooner than five years from now.

I’m not happy this is happening – but am also not convinced Cam and the school have any real responsibility, except a very thin guilt by association… and some fans of opponents that are afraid to admit they were beaten by a better team. Hey, deal with it next year.
Oh, by the way – SEC and NCAA integrity – an oxymoron? There used to be a big SEC football school that had the head coach on some infractions committee for the NCAA…. that school was never ‘caught’ at anything during that period of time – although there were rumors of problems. Or, yes, they could be investigation the Dog Track guy. But I think it could be regarding much bigger fish (such as the buying of politicians regarding gambling issues).

RL, I think the answer to your question about Cam’s eligibility is that while we’re just hearing from the NCAA today, they and AU have been orchestrating the answer for several weeks. Many, many insiders at AU said they believed this was wrapped up when AU, the SEC, and the Newtons met with the NCAA before the UGA game. Given that everyone has lawyers, it isn’t unrealistic to think that it took several days for everyone to get their statements approved for release. Taking into account the Thanksgiving holiday break, and you have something happening this week. Just my opinion, but I don’t think all this just happened over a 24 hour period. They’ve been working toward this conclusion for quite a while.

Crazy stuff happens from time to time in college football, like when the Sat Evening Post tried to hang Bear Bryant and Wally Butts with a game fixing phone call. Dunmb that was. Butts was just about washed up by then and and way over the hill and Bear was just starting to do his thing. Alabama did win the game that was involved.

Both coaches sued and won fairly big settlements too.

Scam and his Pa were in knew deep. At the time, they ahd no idea how good AU was going to be so they were short betting it with their neogtiations. Then, they did not know what they know now.

This is a huge problem for AU with the FBI involved. Lie to them and you get jail time. Lie to the NCAA and don’t get caught? Heck, you might win the Heisman and play for the NC and then FURTHER boost your NFL market value.

Either way the Newtons win $$ big. AU? If this ends up being very bad in a criminal sense, AU will get a REVISIT from the SEC and the NCAA and their stadium can be used for the next three years to shoot skeet.

Jealous much?

A few quotes about jealousy for those who can’t handle the truth:

“Envy is the most stupid of vices, for there is no single advantage to be gained from it.” ~Honore de Balzac

“Our envy always lasts longer than the happiness of those we envy.” ~François Duc de La Rochefoucauld

“It is in the character of very few men to honor without envy a friend who has prospered.” ~Aeschylus

“Envy is a waste of time.” ~Author Unknown

It is beyond me how people can have such sour grapes that it keeps them from enjoying the true God-given talents of a young athlete so rare and transient. Even if you are jealous, you would do us all a favor by keeping your sour-puss comments to yourself and allowing others to enjoy the beauty and talent without trying to ruin others’ shining moments. I think some of you really need to watch “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” this season and maybe it will inspire your hearts to grow several sizes and to be happy for another’s success for once even if it doesn’t benefit you in some way. :)

Matt Hayes of Sporting News:
You should all be embarrassed. You know who you are, the great unwashed of the gotta-get-it, gotta-have-it, hyperbole-fueled world.
The same suckers that listened with bated breath while LeBron James explained where he’d “take my talents” next season, are also the gullible lemmings who jumped on the “let’s ride Cameron Newton out of college football” train because perception supersedes reality.
Have LeBron and his “talents” won anything since he stepped on the court in the NBA? Of course they haven’t.
Did Newton take money from Auburn or Mississippi State or anyone associated with those universities? No, the NCAA says, he didn’t.
In the everlasting struggle of perception vs. reality, perception goes down like a tall, cold glass of sweet tea. Reality, meanwhile, gets upchucked at every turn.
I’ll refer to the great sage of the 21st century, Josh Bynes, when reflecting on the three weeks of Newton Nonsense.
“Even if you guys were told the truth, you wouldn’t believe it,” said Bynes, Auburn’s star linebacker. “The truth doesn’t sell.”
Sadly, I’m beginning to believe him.
Reaction has replaced reflection in our ever-expanding need for knowledge – truth, lies, rumor, innuendo — in this Twitter-feed world. Last month, when allegations that Cecil Newton shopped his son, Cameron, in a pay-for-play scheme first arose, I wrote that they better be true. And it better lead to Auburn and Newton having accepted money, because if it didn’t, then what?
Now here we are. Cecil and (surprise!) an unscrupulous, would-be “marketer” (see: agent) shopped Cameron, without his knowledge, to Mississippi State. The inference was that if Mississippi State asked for money, you better believe Auburn did, too.
And because Newton was playing for Auburn, because he was the game’s best player and was leading the Tigers on an unthinkable journey to the national title game, well, that must mean he knew of the deal, took the money and would leave Auburn in shambles after the NCAA found out months or years later.
Opinions formed along blurred lines, the gap between truth and innuendo filled with whatever was easiest to run with.
There’s only one problem with this tale: It didn’t exactly play out the way television pundits and talk radio gabmasters, and message board mongers and truth-seeking journalists thought it would. It’s now complete, and whaddya know, Cam Newton is eligible to play.
Save the sanctimonious pleas that the NCAA should have penalized Newton for his father’s actions. Shove them in the same barf bag as the holier-than-thou grandstanding of Heisman Trophy voters proclaiming Newton hasn’t won with “integrity.”
He has, however, won after his team gave up a 24-spot on the road in the toughest place to play in college football. But instead of celebrating all that Newton has accomplished on the field, the truth-seekers are caught up in a swirling drainpipe of what-ifs and could-bes and you-never-knows — and there’s nowhere to go but right down the sewer.
Even a stand-up guy like Pat Haden has been caught up in the mess. Haden, Southern Cal’s athletic director, said Wednesday he was surprised by the NCAA’s ruling on Newton — specifically, that the NCAA didn’t hold Newton accountable for his parent’s actions like it did with Reggie Bush and his stepfather.
His stepfather? Pat, please, let me refresh your memory:
When the NCAA finds that assistant coach Todd McNair had or should have had knowledge of violations involving Bush and his parents; that McNair had communication about a prospective business arrangement with a “marketer” involved with Bush; that McNair provided false information during the investigation, it most certainly calls for 30 lost scholarships and a two-year postseason ban.
What did Josh Bynes say again? Even if you were told the truth, you wouldn’t believe it.
So now the truth is staring us directly in the face. Newton is innocent, and the Heisman Trophy vote is upon us.
Newton should be the biggest winner in the history of the award no matter what happens Saturday in the SEC Championship game. With Newton, Auburn is the best team in the nation. Without him, the Tigers struggle to win seven games.
That’s not perception, that’s reality.

How long has it been since the Auburn/UGA game now? And this story is still getting this much attention among UGA fans?

Give it up already…the game is over…you lost. Cam Newton being declared ineligible, or Auburn being found guilty, will do nothing to help UGA…or the SEC for that matter. All it will do is help you go to sleep at night thinking that the only reason you lost is because Auburn played an ineligible player.

UGA has a rich football tradition, and you UGA fans are coming off sounding like a bunch of small, simple, whinning sore losers. Stop it…you are making yourselves look pathetic.

PS…I’m not a GT or Auburn fan.

What I don’t like and none of you mention is how the Camburgular lays down every play, showboating, like he’s hurt. Karma is a bitch and he may get to experience the real deal. Maybe he won’t get up so quickly Saturday in Atlanta. Shame. NOT! SOS

It may take a year, it might take, two, it may take more, but the day will come when Auburn is in the conference with SMU and Central Florida. AUBURN RED HEAD will still be talking about the Heisman Cam won……………………………..that was taken away.
