"Leave all this? And give up showbiz? Are you crazy?" (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
First it was Colorado. Now it’s Miami that’s believed to be interested in Mark Richt. As noted earlier, it might be best for both Richt and Georgia if he found a new job. But I’m guessing he won’t see it that way. And the reasons for that guess are:
• He makes too much money. Neither Colorado, which might not be seriously considering Richt, or Miami, which surely is, can match the $3 million Georgia is paying. His job security might be eroding — he needs to win at least nine games next season to feel safe — but he’s not so near unemployment he needs to take a pay cut.
• He works at a big-name school in the biggest-name league. You don’t exit the SEC to take a job anywhere but the NFL. (The weirdo Dennis Franchione is the exception that proves the rule.) The SEC is the place a college coach works all his life to land; it’s not the place you leave, at least not of your own volition.
• He’s a Miami alum, but he might not be a Miami fit. The folks in Coral Gables are serious about football — they just canned Randy Shannon on merit — but they’re more serious about image. The Hurricanes have worked mightily to clean up their image as Rogue U, and their president is Donna Shalala, who served in Bill Clinton’s Cabinet and isn’t about to let her school revert to being a rule-flouting football factory. And Richt, as we know too well, presides over a program that has seen 11 player arrests this calendar year.
• He has no powerful enemies in Athens. Nobody who matters wants Richt to fail. Already bearing the scars from Jim Donnan and Vince Dooley, UGA president Michael Adams isn’t anxious to fire another high-profile football man, and Greg McGarity, the new AD, is utterly sincere in his admiration for Richt. Indeed, Richt was the biggest beneficiary of Damon Evans’ midnight ride through Buckhead. The former AD’s often-stated goal was to win championships, and 6-6 in a season that coulda/shoulda been 9-3 wouldn’t have been received nearly as well by Richt’s former boss.
• He doesn’t see himself as the problem. For all his cordiality, Richt is a massively confident man. He hasn’t yet conceded that his stewardship is in real trouble. (Not many coaches would, it must be said.) Asked after the Auburn game how Georgia had gotten to 5-6, Richt leaned on the it-was-just-a-play-here-and-play-there crutch
I say again: I don’t think Richt is going anywhere, but I do think he should consider it. Because I’m not sure it’s going to get significantly better for him in Athens, and because the understanding Mr. McGarity mightn’t be so understanding if Georgia continues to be one play away. A coach gets paid $3 million to control his circumstances, not to be the victim thereof.

Are the HCs that get paid $2.3 Million, are they also paid to control their circumstances?
If so there is a Genius over on N. Ave. that hasn’t done anything to control GT’s Special Teams, Passing Game, or how their Defense plays, not to mention Recruiting.
HCs have 5 main things to control:
Offense
Defense
Special Teams
Recruiting
Game Day coaching
Your Genius that you want me to be giddy about FAILS at 3 or 4 of those areas, yet you want me to be giddy about the guy.
Sorry MB, I’m much younger and much more sane than Taz Anderson, I’m not giddy at all about GT’s FB Future, and for those GT fans that disagree with me, simply make a projected Depth chart for 2011 and you’ll see why I feel the way I do.

UGA and Richt are going down the same road as UT and Phil Fulmer. Same excuses by the coach. Too many fans and admins trying to delay the inevitable. Look back at some of Fulmer’s comments. Same as Richt’s. Once the program gets away from you, it is extremely difficult to get it back.

UGA Head Coaches don’t leave UGA. Georgia is a recruiting talent rich state and UGA has easy majors to get ANY kid in school. Richt will not leave no coach would willing want to leave. What UGA coach has left UGA for a better job? I know UGA is a real good job, but it seems to be a career ender too. No UGA Head Coach get offered a better job because there few better jobs. If a UGA coach gets fired he is not going to get a good job because he couldn’t win at UGA with all the money, talent, and easy classes. Richt better leave for a new challange or UGA will be his last good job and he will be coaching at some Christian high school where his kids go to school.

Interesting comment about not being a Miami fit. Having coached at UGA Richt will likely always be considered a football factory coach, but it is sad for UGA to think that he runs too rogue and undisciplined of a program for Da U.

Bradley, You are a hack with an agenda. I’m a Dawg fan and I support Coach Richt – he needs to make some tough decisions on his staff right away or drastically improve for that to continue.
But really, we Atlanta sports fans are tired of you and Schults. Not that you’re that bad. Your welcome hear has worn thin. Where could you go? Maybe Miami or Colorado?
PS, I think the Georgia program, because of the scrutiny from the AJC and Athens police (#1 college town and up there for party school) is unfairly targeted. Mostly traffic tickets, missing court, etc. I have 3 great daughters – they all got traffic tickets and several missed court dates. GIVE IT A REST! Look at all Can Newton did at Florida or the armed robbery at Tennessee. Countless other examples. Why not have some journalistic integrity and report on this imbalance of criticism.
Good luck moving on for we are way past you.

Reason 6 – He has a cush job that no one demands any excellence from him for performing. The stupid fan base and alums are willing to let him coach forever as long as UGA wins at least 6 games every season and beats Tech. Forget being 2 and 8 vs Florida, forget that he has not won anything in 5 years, mediocrity thy name is UGA.
No one demands excellence from MR so he will stay until someone does!

Ok, I agree with your assessment Mark, However, all those reasons make me sick. Basically, you are saying: 1. He is being paid more than he is worth. 2. If he went to Miami he would be on the hook to be a better coach. At UGA, he can perform horribly and keep his job. 3. Noboby in Athens has the guts to fire him. These reasons are all pointing towards the best thing for UGA to do is get rid of him. He is being offered and considered for less desirable coaching positions because that is what he is. His successful days at UGA are over. He will continue to under perform and ride the wave of his cushy job for as long as he can. I can’t say I blame him, but it makes me sick!

Mark, I have tired of your lazy journalism. Yes, we have had some arrest – mostly minor offenses similar of many undergrads across the country. Yet, you seem to do little effort in pionting out Atlanta PD has little time to worry about things that arrests are made for in Athens (ie: shooting off fire works, scooter violations). Have you ever made any effort to see if Saban and other have relationships with local PD to handle things internally? No, that would actually take journalistic investigation and you have been safe and lazy at the AJC for too many years now. There was a day you were the best around – but that was years ago.

Reason why to leave-
1 more bad season in Athens and he is history
In Miami he will have a window of 4 years to make a go of it. He might not make 3 mil, say only 2 mil w/ other money coming from radio/tv contracts, Nike endorsements. If the money is close, Miami offers “potentially” better longterm job security than rolling the dice for anotheryear in Athens.
Also CMR may feel that he could be the man to turn the “U” around. Miami is not playing in the Mountain West. Miami is playing in a BCS conference, and has won a NT this decade. Say what you want about lack of funds, poor stadium, but with the right coach in place Miami is lethal.

We will never agree on the arrests thing but lets go over it YET AGAIN!!
First off I concede and Richt concedes that he was too soft in the past. However in the last 18 months, serious offenses have resulted in immediate expulsion from team. Fender benders, riding scooters, and being flat out just immature and stupid, (Caleb King) have resulted in game suspensions. Other than public flogging what exactly is it you would like Rict to do beyond this? Has he been softer during this period than other coaches…NO WAY. Chizik has a national championship team yet he has a criminal at nose tackle that weekly tries to end young men’s careers to the delight of his coach. Is Richt’s charachter not hugely better than that?
The kids are a bit thick. It has taken a while for the new standards to have the needed ripple affect. Lets see how many get in trouble between now and the Boise Game.
But to suggest that Richt’s charachter is somehow beneath freeking MIAMI and a BILL CLINTON appointee??!!!!
Lets see. I want to improve the morality of my University and teach charachter. The only worse place I can think of to look than the Clinton administration would be in the Obama administration. But hey….at least they are not going to hire the vile, horrid, Mark Richt. He only adopts special needs children and gives them a loving home. He only spends his vacations on mission trips or in seeing the troops. He only opens his home to scores of young people every summer. What a scum bag.

Trafiic violations qualify as thuggery? Thugs go to UT, and escape punishment. At least our coach punishes the ones who break team rules. In re. to your other points, I can’t disagree. If 9 wins is the barometer lets take at look ahead into 2011
Schedule:
Boise State
South Carolina
Coastal Carolina
@ Ole Miss
Miss St.
@ UT
@ Vandy
UF
New Mexico St.
Auburn
UK
@ Tech
This does not appear to be a overly difficult schedule, but with the potential early defections and the apparent poor recruiting on each side of the line who knows what to think of a season with this schedule. Realistically it looks like an 8-4 type of schedule with the loses coming to South Carolina, UT, UF and Auburn.

Jim, Everybody including you seem to forget that the only reason CMR reluctantly hired Bobo was because CMR sucked calling the plays. And here we go again, I am sure he will take it over if he feels it will buy him some time, which it probably will. He makes decisions like this to respond to pressure, not because he thinks it is good for the team. We have all known Bobo sucks, but CMR continues to stick with him, Why because CMR does not know what he is doing.

Unfortunately, I see too much of the Tenn.”Fulmer” personality being developed in Coach Richt. Similar excuses, downplaying disappointing mistakes by players and coaches. I don’t think that Coach Richt or Coach Bobo have a creative bone in either of their bodies. “What you and other Head Coaches have seen in the past, is what you are going to see today and in the future.” ( And, one random one special team stat thought: still no blocked punt attempts by the Dawgs this year! And, what is up with that?) Our coaching strategies remind me of having oatmeal in the morning. And, having oatmeal tomorrow and the days after! And, that is with no sugar on top! Our players, by in large, conform to their coaches image. We are very boring to watch. Few dynamics, accept from Murray and his three primary receivers and occasionally Ealey. Coach Richt, take a history lesson from Coach Fulmer, look at his interviews, the coaching decision he made and more importantly look at his HEAD COACHING ATTITUDE! Coach Richt, we don’t want to lose you, but you need to take a serious look at this ex-SEC coach and learn——————-. Or,——–not to your own peril. Go DAWGSSSSSS!!!!!!

Hmm, Bradley again with another bash Richt Post. Please right another about the Great Messiah, no not Obama, but your beloved Paul Johnson.
These 11 arrests, were mostly stupid Barney Fife finds a perp, type arrests. Besides Robinson and Mettenberger, and Mettenberger was not in Athens at the time, so really not much to Pin on Richt. Mr. Bradley didn’t you fail to mention the fact that Georgia is number 2 the SEC with Graduation rates of its players (behind Vandy)?
Since when do you assume that McGarity is a Richt Man? From what I can tell McGarity was brought in Athens from Florida, so that the special bond between Evans and Richt is now broken up. Total speculation on your part. Will Richt get an extension? Likely not.
As far as an inference on your part that this is all about money for Richt, I really see that as silly. The other assumption that Adams doesn’t have basically the gumption to fire Richt, is totally illogical based on the history of Adams moves with Dooley and Donnan, as you pointed out.

Because Donnan was an a hole and mean to Lorn. Come on! Mark, there is a major reason you left off for CMR not leaving: he wants to turn things around and win at Georgia. This is really the crux of the problem. That is, does he REALLY care? Does he still have the fire in the belly? If so, then he will succeed, and he should be given the chance to turn the ship. Every program has its down time. (Alabama was supposed to win going away this year and lost three. Florida was a top 10 team. Even Tech was pre-season top 20, and now look at them.) Anyway, CMR believes he can suceed and that he will succeed. If so, then he is the kind of man who sincerely wants to fullfill his duty and deliver results. THAT is the main reason he will stay.

Mark…i’m trying to figure out why CPJ gets a pass from you…i meand Coach Richt has beaten 2 out of 3 years…He continues to go against sound football by not taking field goals instead of always fgoing for it on fourth down…How many coaches around the country do that on a regular basis…I wonder how many times that has cost Tech…I mean Sat night they could have taken the lead in the game, which is huge in another opponents stadium…What about last year or this year when he abandoned the run that was working and started passing…You criticize Coach Richt and the dawgs for any coaching decision…Oh and why did Tech not try and tackle Ealey and force a fumble, he has shown the ability to do that this year, isn’t that sound football vs.quitting..Of all the years playing and coaching, not a single coach ever asked, nor have i, our team to not tackle an opponent, i mean how do you teach that….I’ve seen comments on here about Ealey should have fell down, well how many RB’s are taught to do that when they see open field in front of them…These are just a few things that i would point out, now i still think CPJ is a very good coach, thats not the point of my remarks, its just to have you open up your eyes instead of the constant negative remarks toward the dawgs and Coach Richt…The bottom line Mark is Coach Richt is 9-1 against Tech and 2-1 against CPJ..it really doesn’t matter which team played better or had better statistics or what coach made more blunders, it still goes in the “W” column for the dawgs for at least another year…go dawgs

Richt was hired, like everyone else, to be another Adams puppet. A real president would have called Richt out seven or eight years ago when player arrests and misbehavior skyrocketed. Adams didn’t care as long as Richt won games and donations rolled in from fat cats. In the last three years, donations have pretty much mirrored team performance, and there was the disaster with Evans. Donations and support from the big boys that Adams lavishly entertained in Athens and New Orleans, have declined. I mean, what state legislator wants to go to a bowl game in Shreveport or Birmingham to watch a 6 and 6 team under perform. The overpaid Todd Grantham did nothing to stop the bleeding. In short, Adams can’t afford to dump Richt, and that is the main reason Richt will remain through 2013. During the remainder of Richt’s tenure, Georgia Tech and Auburn will sign the most talented players in the state.

The biggest reason he won’t leave. He’s working for a SEC school that being mediocre in Football is OK. You would think we are a ACC team by the No comment coming from the University President. I would like to Hear Adams say ” We want all our Athletic teams to strive to win championships. This has been a very disappointing season for our football team. I trust that AD McGarity is evaluating all facets of our program to get us where we want to be as a program, and that is champions.

LowCountry, so you are saying UGA goes 4-4 in the SEC next year? If that is the case, Richt is gone. Also, if he loses to Tenn,Fl, and S.C., he will finish in 4th in the East. Gone again. I don’t see anyway he turns this mediocre program around. He want fire his jogging buddy the S&C coach, he want get rid of BooBoo, and he can’t get rid of CTG. UGA doesn’t have a nose guard, the inside backers are too small, the corners can’t cover man to man, and the safties are terrible in run support. Too many problems on Defense, and no answers on campus. Offense, will be terrible next year. No dominant O.L., no big play threat at w.r., and no big play threat at r.b. UGA has a decent Q.B. that gets tight when the game is on the line, and that’s about it. So if UGA is going to hang it’s hat on a slightly above average q.b, with no playmakers on offense, and no playmakers on defense to turn this mess around, it want happen. Face facts UGA fans, no coaches, not enough talent=disaster in the SEC.

To All The Idiots That Can’t Read “The Hurricanes have worked mightily to clean up their image as Rogue U, and their president is Donna Shalala, who served in Bill Clinton’s Cabinet and isn’t about to let her school revert to being a rule-flouting football factory.” Now know that over 75% of student body is from NE US, they loved the wild old U and are torn apart by football slippage and leaving the Big East years ago. Since most of the JERKs making comments about the U couldn’t even qualify, much less be accepted into the U, it would behoove you to use your little computers and read about the U football program from the Sun Sentinel or the Miami Herald before making stupid comments about the U. Oh and by the way, how many Heisman winners and National Championships has either GA or Tech produced since 1983?
No Heisman’s and 1/2 NC; the U had 2 Heisman winners (has Tech ever had even 1?) and 5 NC (no 1/2 NC would be counted by the U).

I’m still waiting on McGarity or Richt or SOMEONE to sell me that things will be better next year.
There is simply no way we lose 6 starters on Offense (including our #1 playmaker) and 7 starters on a Defense (if Boykin leaves, if not, 6) that was average at best and expect to somehow have things click.
The road to 5-7 is paved with good intentions.
I think Richt is circling the drain unfortunately.

I hope we keep Richt. I alos hope he eally wants to stay.
When Damon Evans interfered last year and basically forced/influenced Richt to drop Matinez, it hurt us this season.
Rome was not built in a day. Neither is a defense, offense, or special teams. I say give it some time for us to get the large linemen that the 3-4 necessitates. Weve got to have linement to keep the oppositions O-Line off of our interior linebackers. We are just a bit undersized still.
Honestly, we saw improvement in the offense this year. Weve seen improvement in the turnovers game. And most importantly weve seen improvement in the on-field penalties.
This off-season, lets look to improve the off-field drama and improve our defensive play. Look to see that the work is being done and that it is effective. As we improve and build we can have higher goals. Georgia fans are a bit foolish to think that every year is THE YEAR. We are a couple or a few years away from that point.

Nine great years and one bad one that was not all his fault (AJ suspension, new coaches and schemes, etc.)certainly deserves more respect than a lot of crazies are giving coach Richt.
Next season, after all the adjustments faced this season have been embedded, will put all these folks on the Richt bandwagon. He is a great head coach and UGA will suffer if he leaves. Show the man a little love.

Good grief, Richt went to work on everything this season, he improved:
pass defense
rush defense
total defense
pass offense
total offense
scoring offense
socring defense
kick off coverage
turnovers
penalties
He made those improvements, and more. His game strategy is unrivalved, you don’t win 90 games in 9 seasons in the SEC being a poor strategist.
Mark, shocker, sometimes Freshman QB’s and a brand new defensive line don’t execute well.
But your propensity to BLAME RICHT FOR ALL BAD, and give RICHT NO CREDIT FOR ANY GOOD, is false.

85 grad, letterman, raised in Jax, FL, MR cannot, will not, never, ever be able to stand up to the pressure of playing FL.
Think of this, is thier not another school in the country that has the miserable 3 wins in 21 games against it’s biggest rival? Name another program in the country that has to put up with this?
Tebow finally departs, everyone was saying this summer, this is the moment to jump Florida. Florida just finished up 7-5. It took MR and Bobo and entire half to settle it’s team down, thus they loose a game they should’ve easily won.
And Adams, McGarity are telling us to tone down the focus on Florida? Does Ga’s brass, the guys who pay the bills for the Ath. Assoc. so wealthy that they can’t jet of to Colorado and hide after Florida, yet again winning? Do they not take it to the level of thier peers at Alabama, Auburn, Florida, who wouldn’t put up with Mark R. act and would’ve cut him loose a few weeks ago?

Well i’ll try this again as it appears that my remarks didn’t get posted…Mark, let me ask you something..Wheres the criticism of CPJ regarding his coaching in the first quarter of the game Sat and not taking what should be a sure field goal..Getting a 3 point lead in your opponents stadium can be huge, but he constantly goes against sound football in many games by going for it on fourth down…don’t know many coaches that do that very often…I not saying that CPJ is not a good coach, i think he is, but it amazes the negative comments you continue to hang on the dawgs…Isn’t Coach Richt 9-1 and 2-1 against Tech and CPJ…doesn’t really matter whether the better team won or who had the better statistics or what coach did or did not outcoach the other…The bottom line is about getting the “W”…at least that is the way i always played it and coached it…also, how many times has a coach asked his team to quit and let a team score…Would it not have been better to tackle Ealey and force a fumble, i mean he has shown he is capable of doing that when given the opportunity…I have never had a coach from middle school thru college ever ask us to let the other team score…Should the dawgs have taken a knee everytime, perhaps, but doing that probably would have let Tech get the ball back, but to let the other team to score just goes against everything you are taught…Anyway my point is not to say CPJ is not a good coach, but just hoping you could actually give some credit to Coach Richt and his record against Tech..go dawgs..

In regards to dicipline, players need to behave better. It is reasonable to expect 18-22 year olds to know how to behave when they get to school. Only so much baby sitting can be done. dont be surprised if the Dawgs go 9-3 or 10-2 . And finishes second in th East. And they go to the OutBack Bowl. And if that happens than Richt will get another year. With the reason being that ” he is so close to turning it around.”
It’s like watching the same bad movie over and over, expecting the outcome to be different. You know the ending, but your hoping the zit faced kid running the project took some tape and spliced a better finish. Only it never happens. The zit faced kid is eating popcorn and reading girl magazines and “Woooh, Quick to the Slow”.
Anyway, I would rather watch War and Peace and The thornbirds back to back then to watch another game where we are passing the ball at will and suddenly Bobo decides we need to run the wild Dawg. Or where Georgia has the opposing team in 3rd and 19 and they get a first down on a screen pass. Or another press conference where Richt says” We just are not getting the breaks, one or two plays our way and we win.” Or another game where we are up 21-7 and decide to go conservative.
If Richt is not willing to make the changes necessary, then the changes need to be made for him…and to him.

GA just ran off 7 games in a row of scoring more than 30 points per game. Not even the mighty AU and Arky offenses can say this.
Having said that, GA dropped 2 of those games due to their inability to make stops on D.
The D has issues that will be addressed via recruting. The O has issues going forward that will not be addressed by recruiting, unless Crowell makes UGA his choice and he has immediate impact, like number 21 did for SC.

Fuzzybee. Go back and read the article this time. That was the old ‘U’. They have worked very hard to clean that up. No excuses, we need to do the same. But remember, you still have the champion dope traffic champion of all time. And you guys ‘fixed it’, so that he didn’t do jail time. Regular guy on the street is still in jail. Suspended drivers licensed and drunk in public really is kid stuff. You have fewer offenses (and we can debate the reasons why, ranging from no ‘real campus’ to who is looking the other way and who isn’t.) Let’s be clear, CMR has to clean that stuff up, but you do not have a bunch of angels over by the Varsity. I have friends who have sons at Tech, believe me – there are issues, just like at any other D1 school.

I think Richt does have some sense of the pressure he’ll be under next season. I think he also knows his defense needs to improve drastically. (How many games did we give up 30+ points this season?) But he won’t say that publicly. His hopes are hanging on Grantham. In fact, we all are. “Nobody who matters wants Richt to fail” is right — for better or worse, our best option is to give Richt and co. every opportunity to turn things around.

@Dawg_Mike…good points, the D does have issues and that is what is holding us back in my opinion…Hopefully next year the defense will be better, it has to if we are ever going to compete for the SEC or NC in the future…As far as our offense, i think we will be ok there, and even better if we get a great RB…the O-line did not perform as expected this year, some of that could be because of people coming back from injuries and and having nagging injuries during the season…I think that our RB’s inability to hit the holes or break tackles at times made our O-Line look worse than they were, but we do need to show some improvement up front…again, the D is where we have to step it up a notch, especially up front, thats where we are absolutely getting manhandled…If we can see that then i know the coaches also see it..Next year we should see if Coach Grantham is the answer for our D…go dawgs

Part of the reason our defense is not good is because we still do not have a consistant running game. We have never had a running game that we could relie on to run the clock. Yes we have had plenty of capable players but they have not been deloped and our team has not been coached to have a running game that will chew up clock. If we held more time of possession, all the teams would not have scored as much and we would have won most our games. The offense CMR runs puts too much pressure on the D. I am not saying that our defense doesn’t need improvement. It does. We run a typical ACC offense.

Mark,
I think that you’re a good writer but I can certainly see where “Done
with you” is coming from….interesting parallel that he postulated.
All too often it appears that the AJC staff uses a degree of negative
sensationalism in choosing how to frame up a story, particularly when
Georgia football is concerned….and when you have a negative story to
report, does someone there seek to find the LEAST flattering picture
of the subject that you can find ? I see that over and over. And you
don’t need to wonder whether the Athens police targeting UGA football
players…..that happens, because I’ve seen it with my own eyes. A
few years back a football player rear-ended my car on Milledge Avenue
during heavy stop-and-go traffic – could’ve happened to any driver.
I called the police since it was an accident, but no damage to my car
occurred. The policeman, after finding out who the other driver was,
urged me to press charges. As I had no damage to my car, I declined.
I’d have done the same with any reasonable person, and both the driver
and his passenger (another UGA football player) were very respectful.
I mentioned that I didn’t want to get the young Bulldog in trouble, and
the policeman continued “You don’t need to worry to about that – they
have so many privileges”. Again I declined. I just wonder if this
goes on in Tuscaloosa, Knoxville, etc (I doubt it). Mark, you and your
staff write for the AJC – a GEORGIA newspaper. There are certainly
negative things to report (in ANY college town), but if you want your
readership to truly believe that you’re reporting accurately, quit with
the negative framework. Do you honestly believe that the offenses that
our players got arrested for would have achieved such attention from
significant state media in Alabama or Tennessee ? Some would have, but
not most of them…..sorry, but I don’t buy it. Our players certainly
need to behave and follow the rules, and Richt has implemented much
stricter punishments over the last year. Just as Richt might not
see himself as part of the problem, neither do you and Schultz see
yourselves as part of the problem. There’s room for improvement in
both camps. There are many, many people who would LOVE to see our
program get torn down…..all too often Schultz and to a lesser extent
you seem quite willing to help them do it. You think recruits don’t
read these stories ? Please consider the journalistic power that you
have, use it fairly, and remember which state you and most of your
readers are in.

Bradley – “He doesn’t see himself as the problem.”
Lowcountry Bulldawg – “…the apparent poor recruiting on each side of the line…”
Sam – “…#5 recruiter in nation over last decade”
A couple of comments on these selected comments.
If Richt does not see himself as the problem can he identify and fix the problem? What problem? The last 5 recruiting classes were an average of 10th best classes in the nation (per Scout). The problem is how did UGA go 6-6 with top 10 recruiting classes?
Lowcountry says the problem is recruiting in the OL & DL. Sam says Richt is the #5 best recruiter in the nation over the last decade. Are both correct? Does Richt recruit the “skill” players exceptionally well but not the “grunts” where games are actually won and lost.
Just asking questions based on the comments above.

Who really cares. What dawg fans do not understand is that the rest of the SEC has caught up. There are five or six teams in the SEC that are head and shoulders about UGA. The other SEC schools that are in the top 10 in recruiting seem to post good seasons and their recruits become a team. What causes that? Good coaching. Something UGA is missing.

5 Reasons Mark Richt will leave Athens:
1. Miami will pay him much more money than he is currently making, and Miami has much larger financial resources than Athens.
2. Miami is a much better program with 5 national titles since 1985 and has a much better chance of winning a title in the next 5 years than Athens.
3. He needs enemies to push him in Miami, thus a national title within 5 years of taking over the program, unlike Athens who does not push any coaches to win.
4. UGA is not a big name school, and there only claim to fame is being in the SEC, but unfortunately UGA has the ugliest and cheapest house in the neighborhood.,
5. Florida has superior talent, which is right in his backyard.
So not so fast my friend, CMR is just waiting for his Napa Car Parts bowl to end, then he is packing up.

3- Prohibit Mark Bradley from prognasticating about football teams future success. (apparently if the team proves him wrong he spends several weeks skewering the coach)

I told all of you change people last year that the D was not going to get any better this year just because you fire CWM. Guess what it did not. Why, because we are not playing college football on XBOX. It takes time for a new DC to come in and turn things around. Plus, Defense, and well as offense, is won in the trenches. First rule of coaching, if you can stop the opponents running game with your front 4 then you have the advantage. We could not and and had to bring the 8th man in the box to slow down the running game. UGA had three DL’s that went to the NFL and had to replace them with young players. It takes time folks be a freaking realist and not a stupid idiot. I think CTG has the right concepts and in a couple years he will improve the D if he can recruit the players he needs.
Point two, there is nothing wrong with the O. UGA scored enough points in most games, once they took the reigns off of Murray, to win. They will continue to do this for at least the next three years.
Point three and the most important: Recruiting. This is were we have failed the past few years. I am sure CRG has not forgotten how to evaluate talent and could get us some great recruits in but there is something you all have to realize. CRG and CMR ARE HAVING THEIR HANDS TIED BY ADAMS ON WHO CAN COME AND PLAY FOOTBALL AT UGA. It takes a mean, nasty streak to play LB or DL in the SEC and a good deal of the great ones have a shaky past (fights in HS, suspensions for cussing teachers, discipline problems ect). Adams has set up a special committee to review all athletic scholarships and if there is a hint of past character issues then these athletes can not play at UGA. This committee has refused admission to at least three I can think of in the past 5 years. CMR is a smart man and I am sure he knows what they look at and I am sure he has not even offered scholarships to some great players because he knows they can not get in. Example, The last two great LB that went to FL out of the state of GA. If I was a betting man I would bet that we did not even seriously recruit them because they could not get in. This committee was set up one year before CBV left the program and I bet he knew he would not be able to recruit the same players and it had something to do with his decision to leave? I wonder if this also played into the decisions of some of the DC’s we looked at last year?
If you really want to lay blame then you need to look at Adams first. Even if CMR was to leave the program, do you really think things will change that much when the next coach could not get the players they need? I have said it for the past three years. UGA will not be a consistent player on a national level until Adams is gone but you so called fans are just to stupid to see the real reason for the problems.

I love CMR and the example he sets. He is to be commended for that. And that is part of the problem. He is such a great guy that no one wants to be the heartless bastard to stick a fork in him and that is why he gets another year. Rather than calling for his firing, the fan base should begin raising our expectations of the Bulldog program. Our expectation should be that GA win the SEC East next season and appear in a top tier bowl. Now given the tallent we have returning that will be no easy task. However, if the bar is sufficently high, people will achieve more than they ever thought they could.

Mark Richt rescued your sorry football program in his first two years. He then provided your FIRST SEC TITLE IN OVER 20 YEARS then a second soon afterwards. Sure, the winning average has dropped from 10 to something much lower but where would you be without him? Seeking your first SEC title in 30 years.

It’s not blind loyalty, it’s backing who is in charge and giving them 100% backing. If you can’t do that, then YES I do question you as a Dawg. B/c all you do is gripe and cause strife! We have people like Bradley and Schultz to cause all of that. We don’t need our supporters do it with them. If we don’t win next year, then the “powers that be” will make tough decisions. If a college football coach cannot make it at UGA, then he cannot make it anywhere. The state of Georgia is the third most talent-rich state for college football talent and only has a lowly ACC school top compete against. So the Bulldogs are talented-enough every year to at least win it’s division.
Therefore, Mark Richt is a poor coach. So I hope he stays a long time….

Our program just needs a new fresh start. Richt has lost 14 games in the last 3 years. Once is an accident, twice is a trend, and three times is a problem. Except for 2007, you can really say UGA has underachieved 4 out of the last 5 years! Personally I think Richt has gotten lethargic as well as the vast majority of our fanbase, most of whom make excuses for his subpar performance. Well I’m sorry, but as an alum and ticket holder, I feel I have the right to demand more from a program like UGA that has the resources to be successful. Florida, LSU, and Bama have all won National Titles in the last 4 years, and Auburn is likely to win one this year. UGA has similar or better resources than these schools and should be on the inside looking out instead of the outside looking in with regards to National Titles. But from as far as I can tell, little pressure has been put on Richt. So the way I look at it is if our fanbase is satisfied with 6-6 and giving up 34 points to a team we should destroy in Ga. Tech, then hey keep Richt. But personally, I expect more for my money, and I don’t think that’s an unfair expectation. The ” Grass might not always be greener on the other side”, but at this point its certainly worth the risk. Because contray to popular belief, we can find PLENTY of coaches capable of winning more than 6 games.

3 Reasons Mark Bradley Can’t Leave the AJC. 1) Tenure. For all of us who have read his columns through the years, one thing is abundantly clear; unless he is belittling someone, he has nothing to offer. Tenure is the only reason Mark Bradley is still around because it dang sure ain’t for substance. 2) AJC management is oblivious to why their newspaper circulation continues to decline. For whatever reason, AJC management hasn’t figured out that haters like Mark Bradley are no longer in demand. The public is past the childishness of know-it-all but have never actually done anything, self absorded columnist. Remember, who, what, when, where, and why? Mark Bradley has never even heard of it. 3) Apparently, some people love to suffer through life. If Georgia athletics are so bad, what are you still doing here Mark Bradley. Go land a job in the town where you actually like the sports teams. Oh yeah, I forgot, your articles are so lame, so less than mediocre, you can’t get a job anywhere else. Putdown and smear reporters and columnist are a dime a dozen. Why does Mark Bradley, a reporter for our state legal organ, have such a vendetta against the coaches and players of our states athletic teams and universities, it is rather obvious…he is jealous. He is envious. He knows in his lifetime he will never obtain what Mark Richt has. Plain and simple, Mark Bradley is a jealous little crybaby because he can’t make it to the level he wanted in life and someone else has.

For an instant there when I read he headline of your piece Bradley, I had a thought that just maybe you were gonna say something nice about Mark Richt….but noooooo! I don’t know what had gotten into me. Maybe I thought that you were gonna practice a little objectivity, but then ‘columnists’ aren’t required to be objective, and you clearly have what was referred to above as ‘an agenda’. Then I tried to ask myself, why?
Do you just dislike the University of Georgia so much that anything you can do to undermine and criticize the institution and those associated with it is fair game?
Are you, as has also been mentioned, simply interested in ‘hits’ so you can show off for whoever pays your salary (it sure ain’t a Georgia grad – where is Jim Minter when you need him) and you know that you can easily ‘get a fight started’ by poking a stick up a Bulldog’s butt.
And speaking of that, is it that you’ve become such a Paul Johnson ‘B-Boy, that you’ll take any opportunity to find fault with Mark Richt? Is that your problem ‘bumpee’?
I suppose I could go on and come up with any number of motivations – or as you put it, ‘reasons why Mark Bradley likes to stick it to Georgia’, but I think I’ll just settle in on that you just don’t like us, or for that matter, you don’t like being in Georgia at all, do you? If so, you can go back to Kentucky anytime you like, you won’t be missed by me and a few others.

I agree with much of what M. Bradley said….save 1 comment. He referred to Damon Evans as “Richt’s former boss”. That is utterly ridiculous. Everybody with any knowledge of Damon and the athletic dept knew/knows that Damon was a token….a non-decision making lightweight…..a front boy for Pres. Michael Adams. Think about it. he NEVER negotiated a contract. He never even hired anybody save a few secretaries. When a coaching postion came available, he made one phone call…..to a professional search firm to give him a name to submit to the Dept. The standards are no lower in Miami and the competition for football players is just as fierce. And they don’t have a great fan base or a well-healed athletic department. The only thing Richt could gain from the move is a honeymoon period–maybe 2 years–before results are demanded.
I am for being patient with Richt because he has shown he can compete at the highest level (the biggest difference between #3, #2, and #1 is luck), and even the greatest coaches have had 3-year stretches of underperformance (see Bear Bryant from 68-70). That having been said, Richt needs to win at least 1 of the 4 tough games next year (Boise, SC, UF, and AU) and he better not lose to anyone else.

Wow. Coach wins 91 game sin 9 seasons, top 5 win % at .742, top 5 in profits in NCAA, top 5 in recruiting over decade, 6 top 10 finishes over 10 seasons at UGA, #1 at getting players into the NFL, #1 in academics (APR) in SEC.
Yet Bradley CHOOSES to TRY and find something BAD to write about Mark Richt?
Is it envy? Of course. Richt does stuff, writers conceptualize and write about the DOERS.
It is resentment? Doubtless. Bradley likely has a hard time comparing his salary, to Richt’s $3 million salary (which was more than fair considering Richt made UGA $40 million + profit).
So we try and bring the great down. To medicore. To average.

Richt’s one of the humblest coaches I’ve seen,. What an insult to hurl at him that he lacks humility. Richt’s constantly improving his team, look at the turnovers and penalities this year. Very humble guy.
Paul Johnson? Not so much. An arrogant, pompous jerk who rarely changes anything, even when it stops working.

7-5 next year with beating those we should and losing to who we all expect is going to get Mark fired. Not because Adams wants to, but follow the money. The Hartman fund giving is down 14% the last two years, and i’m sure as much can be blamed on Obama as losing, but it’s down. Another year and I’m afraid Adams won’t have a choice. Privately, I think he’s OK with 6,7, 8 wins a year. But when the money starts effecting HIM at Regents meetings, he will ORDER Mark’s removal. Yes, it’s that simple.

Maybe Adams will take off the restraints and allow CMR to recruit the same type athletes that allowed him to win in the past. You can not win with high moral kids at safety, LB and DL. You have to have a little nasty to play those positions and Adams has not allowed CMR to recruit nasty since before CBV left.

Mark Bradley is right now sitiing at his desk laughing out loud and saying to his partner in crime, that scrappy grade school second baseman Jeff Shultz, “look at all these idiots posting on here! There’s no telling how big my bonus is going to be this Christmas.”
With the downward spiral (read toilet bowl-like) of circulation for the AJC, the only way for the company to get readership and advertising revenue is to be able to show the advertisers high hit numbers to their web version of the paper. So it’s Bradleys job to write this stuff in order to get as many responses as possible. And we do just the thing he wants us to and that is get mad and post here while he sits around the office and makes fun of us. A better response would be not to reply to his column at all. He gives a platform for all these slobbering idiots who have never stepped foot on a college football field, even to mark the yard lines, to criticize the offensive coordinator that just set a school record for points scored in a season and did it with a Freshman QB. That would be just like saying how stupid a DC was that had just set a school record for least points allowed. Where is the logic in that? That alone is enough reason not to ever post here again.
That being said, I would like to know why the continued maligning of the program over all these “arrests.” ANYBODY with the first lick of sense knows that the same violations in Tuscaloosa and in Gainesville don’t even get reported. It would take a moron to put the offenses of the UGA players in the same class as those that have happened this year at Knoxville, yet at UT those players don’t even have to sit out a game. Where is the outrage on that from this reporter, or Barnhead, whose column I have boycotted, btw. If you compare riding a scooter the wrong way with giving death threats like they do at Florida and then Meyer allowing him to stay on the team, he is OUT like Mettenburger at UGA, but he plays at UF. Where is the outrage from this reporter on that? What about some real journalism like telling us what all the FBI has on Auburn and how the exploits of their recruiting coordinator Trooper Taylor have been in question at EVERY school he has been?
The schedule next year may be easy, but with our losses in key personnel I think it will be difficult to have a better team. Now without Murray imploding at Florida and a fumble hear and there, we would have a better record, but the team, wouldn’t actually be any better. So if the few plays go the other way next year we could have a better record but I can’t see the team being any better. Not if Vince Lombardi was the coach.
Why? Because football is about players. It’s not about coaches. Why is Sabin a good coach? Because he recruits more players than any other coach in the country, always has no matter what school he has been in charge of. Read the WSJ article. How does Auburn take a coach that is lifetime 5-19, then goes 7-5 first year, suddenly able to sign the best player from AL, MS, AR and LA plus the number 1 JUCO player in the nation? Well now we know how they got them. That’s not the way I want my University to run it’s athletic program. If you recruit on the up and up all you can do is talk some kid into coming. You can’t MAKE anyone come to the University of Georgia. Some kids have character or academic issues and you don’t want them no matter how good they might be if you are trying to run a clean program. So you say we were looking at that kid as a TE. Look at Texas. Their recruiting class is ALWAYS ranked higher than that of ours. They aren’t even going to a bowl. You think it’s because of the coaching? Really? At Texas? It’s the coaching? It’s the players, they have no QB and no defensive players.
Many have mentioned the similarities of the last couple years and the last few years of the Fullmer years at UT. My comment on that is much like the thoughts I have about the presidency of this country. The guy that was in charge had a couple tough years so they replaced him with this new fangled guy. I want to ask all the UT fans and the admin how that “Hopey/Changey stuff is working for them now. UT has been a joke and a soap opera since the day Fullmer was fired. I would much rather go through some hard times and keep the program intact than go through what UT is going through.

We’re 1/2 way there!! Adams fired Donnon for losing to TECH 3-straight yrs, not for losing to FLA. However, it was the mutual consensus that the NEXT coach could, and WOULD, not only beat TECH, but also get over that dreadful hump of losing to FLA (most) every year. SO, do you look at the glass as 1/2 empty OR 1/2 full??
Guess it depends on who’s looking… But I will say that as much as I like Richt (and I do think he should stay another yr or two-pending results) I think he will be on borrowed time if he can’t right this ship.

Richt will be fine, everyone is just a little disappointed with the last two years. When you transition to new coaches there is always a bump in the road. However, he needs to keep a watchful eye on the off the field issue that have been prevalent. I don’t think that’s the coaches duty to watch these fellows, but it does fall back to his responsibility.

Mark, your last sentence hit the nail on the head, but you’re forgetting one thing:
CMR isn’t paid to win the NC, win the SEC Championship, have winning seasons, or even keep his players out of the care of Clarke County’s finest…he’s paid to beat Tech, and he has done so consistently. Richt will stay the coach as long as he is beating Tech more often than not, even if he never takes the field in December again.

The best thing about Richt staying is another year like this or worse is assured. You figure blowout losses to Boise, Florida, and Auburn is a guarentee, losses to S Carolina and Tenn is likely and you already have 5. I think there is merit in not firing him and spending some private time figuring out who they really want. Why make the timing an issue, shoot the horse when the timing is right. Richt is not hated and he will not totally destroy the program so what is the hurry. I wouldn’t extend that contract no matter what but I imagine he has an automatic extension anyway. I would be finding where Smart is sitting during a SEC convention or the man down in Texas, Muschamp. I would find a way to be at the bowl TCU is playing Patterson may be the man. But I would not pull that trigger until I knew where I was going to land. Remember the search for the defensive coach. I think that was coaching candidates seeing the writing on the wall with Richt, but it may be that atmosphere at Georgia, the last real SEC type winner was Dooley.

Sign a real stout RB, WR and a couple of good DL and watch how fast the dawgs can get back to elite status. SEC football goes in cycles see how UF did not lose for two years and then they are down this year too. Everyone complained about the DC needed to be changed last year and I guess everyone assumes you can just plug in a square peg in a round hole and have a top ranked defense. The offense has a good QB returning next year, a great hybrid TE in Orson Charles and some quality recruits at WR. Most glaring weakness on offense is a gamebreaking RB, but hopefully Crowell or some other kid will come. If you do not think a FR RB can make a difference look at SC and their RB. Also, we are only three days after the end of the season. Lets wait until Signing Day to make judgement on changes or lack of before real UGA fans write off 2011. Most of the teams UGA has lost to this year are home gomes next year and it is ludicrous to project losses already.

You are so bias in your writings about CMR. Look at the quarterbacks you get. Murray is going to torture Tech for the next 3 years. Before that you had Stafford and before him Green.
We got a 3 and none of them can throw better than my grandmother.
Just for conversation, look at your beloved Vince Dooley.
Through 1969-74 he had records of 5-5, 5-5-1, 7-4, 7-4-1 & 6-6, certainly nothing to get excited about. The only great season he had in that span was in 71 when he went 11-1. Richt’s had 3 subpar seasons and you want to run him out. Too funny

CMR seemed that the beginning of the season to be burnt out to me. He just didn’t act and look like he was doing what he wanted to be doing. Who could blame him? late night calls about kids in jail, beginning 17 year old kids to come to your school, fans that expect a win every week and on and on. He has his pockets full of money how much of that kind of stuff do you take?
Hopefully things will turn around and he will get excited about coaching at UGA again and we will be competitive.
If he wasn’t burnt out and just couldn’t get the team ready to play that is a different matter all together. He needs fired if he can’t do the job— a little slack, not much at these wages,if he simply let down from a little burn out.

GA won’t go 9 – 3 next year. Who says the schedule is not overly difficult? SC has arrived. TN on the rise. Auburn is certainly there. We never beat FL. And now the AD does the dumbest thing for the football program to succeed and adds BSU. GA does not go 9 – 3. We have hit a new low of mediocrity that took 3 years to get down to. You don’t think that Newton (was money well spent?) was important to that team going to the record that it did so far this season??? If you think you can simply replace him you are DELUSIONAL. Ask any level headed FLA fan how easy it has been to replace a similar type player in TIM TEBOW.
Auburn fans…next year you are AT BEST 8 maybe 9 wins depending on how other teams do as far as replacing their own players (Bama is biggest question mark with their QB graduating)

Some of you people are foolish. With AJ Green, Aaron Murray, Orson Charles, and Kris Durham any OC in college football could average way over 30 points. Uh, looks like you actually agree with Mr. Bradley. And, besides, why try to run a sportswriter out of town? To make UGA a better team? I’m aware of the “it’s not the coach, it’s the players” defense (which, by the way, Mack Brown at Texas shot full of holes yesterday), but it’s a bit of a stretch to think either the team or the program are going to improve if a writer stops writing about it.
Oh, one more thing. I have two wonderful daughters, both in their 20’s. Neither has ever had a traffic ticket or any, much less several, missed court appearances.

Wreckntech, your whole premise that Coach Richt is not similar to EX-COACH Fulmer was that we have better recruits. Wasn’t that your premise?. What I am suggesting is that because of our lack of success with the talent that WE HAVE HAD over the last 4 years, the better recruits will CONTINUE the bleed out to our other competitors in the SEC and ACC in our region. Don’t begin to say that they are not going. Because, they have over the last three years. I think the departure begin about three years ago and it will accelerate with the winning records that Coach Richt has accumulating. We have a preacher here in our town that started out great with our church, but after about 5 years tenure he and about 5 other individuals decided that we needed to build the largest, most elaborate church in county. The church had two services about 3/4 and 1/2 full. They read ONE study that 15,000 individuals would be moving into our area in a ten year period. One problem though. The 15,000 moving into the area were predominately Catholic and this was a Baptist Church! The Church that holds 3000+ is about 1/3 full for one service and 1/4 full for the second. The real problem begin when the preacher begin BELIEVING that HE was the future and HE and his close advisers were the answers, that the church begin declining. The church has lost 25% of its pre-mega church membership. I don’t want to see GEORGIA lose its talent to surrounding COMPETITORS like what we saw during the 90’s, by waiting too long and tolerating too much. Go DAWGSSSS!!!!!!

First, let me acknowledge that MB’s prime focus in writing articles such as this are based on how many hits he can create on this website and how many comments he can generate, not necessarily rational thought. Trying to equate Miami and its history of thuggery to that of UGA is laughable. A year or two of minor issues versus a multiple year legacy of “Da U” is crazy talk, even for Bradley. I would bet transgressions are more tolerated in Cape Coral than Athens. Those who are actually graduates of UGA have a different perspective than the typical yahoo who waffles from team to team based on this year’s record. Lastly, since the NCAA did away with Athletic dorms, how would you suggest Richt to keep tally of all his players? Trying to hold hands with them all as they go through their daily lives seems a bit ambitious. Each UGA player was recruited and offered by the same schools such as FL, AL and Auburn. I would suggest that these schools and their associated towns better tolerate the driving with a suspended license or other such trivial transgressions.

All the Freshmen and Sophomore DL and LB will be more mature, we have some depth in the OL now, the RB’s will be better, and King, Brown and maybe some Freshman WR can step into the role. CTG will have a year under his belt and the D will be better next year.
I will be the first to predict that we beat BS like a drum in the opening game next year. SC will be back to normal next year, Auburn will be way down because I think they are starting 18 seniors this year and Cam will probably be declared ineligible. Tenn has another couple of years to build because LK left their cupboards bare. I can count anywhere from 8 to 11 wins next year.

MB: to even mention Donna Shalala and U-Miami in the same breath as UGA and Mark Richt is astounding – and anathema! This is oil and water. The two are so completely different.
Shalala is by all accounts one of the most liberal members of Clinton’s cabinet – a woman who as Chancellor at UW-Madison instituted a hate speech code that was deemed overstepping by her colleagues and declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. No coach at UGA would fit in at U-Miami and very very few students would feel comfortable on that campus. I went there for a year and had to leave – I was literally the only person on my floor born south of the Mason-Dixon line and who did not snort coke. Absolutely true! God how I hated that place!!!

Oh, and just to add to that – four of the guys on my floor were football players (this was before they had an athletic dorm). And these guys were some of the biggest coke-snorters in the dorm! I transferred to UGA, where my cousin was on the football team and several of my friends were varsity athletes. The worst any of those guys/girls did was drink a few too many PBRs.

Reason #6 – Richt has a nice termination clause. Why wouldn’t he stick around until he gets dumped? It’s the best thing for his family and he gets some cushion to go into broadcasting until the next great offer comes along (which it will). Richt isn’t going anywhere folks so settle down and stick around for the ride. If he doesn’t improve the win/loss record next year things will take care of themselves… meaning he will be forced out. But you can’t expect the man to leave money on the table to go somewhere else.

There are going to be a lot of empty seats next year. Richt is going to set the program back years. We ended this year in a tie with Tenn. How can that be with the talent avialable. Same coach same results. Richt is worse than a bad coach, he doesn’t coach at all. If it’s a preacher you folks want we can get a top one for a hundred thousand and save a lot of money and still lose.

It is unbleivable how other big names schools(Florida, LSU, Auburn, Alabama) gives their head coach a few years max to turn a program around and win a national championship otherwise “hit the road, jack”. CMR has had 10 years and with a few exceptions of a SEC championship, he has done absolutely nothing. He is satisfied every year with with a 7-4 record for such a prominent program such as UGA.
I truly respected U of Miami this weekend when they fired Shannon after only 3 years. Their philosophy: “We want to return Miami to national prominence”. Why can’t UGA adopt a similar philosophy rahter than dealing with such lackluster effort from an over-stayed coach.

Step 1: Our recruiting class is top 10! Go dawgs!
Step 2: We are pre-season top 10! Go dawgs!
Step 3: Off season arrests.
Step 4: Loss to Florida.
Step 5: Loss to Auburn/Alabama.
Step 6: Loss to another lower tier team (ie: Kentucky).
Step 7: Drop out of top 25.
Step 8: Beat Tech.
Step 9: Pitiful bowl.
Step 10: Wait ’till next year.

Lest we forget, Mark Richt had his entire immediate family eventually move to Athens. Even is brother in law moved to Athens from Tallahassee, Fl. from a multi million dollar mansion. His mother also moved to Athens and his father although divorced from his mother also moved to Athens. I have lost track if more moved in or if some moved out, but the Richt family I believe is sold on UGA, Athens and the State of Georgia and I believe that the football team with this to be determined football recruit class may well be just what the Doctor ordered and if we can get better blocking for the run and pass, add some more super sized defensive linemen, we may well run the table next year as our defense will have another year of learning the 3-4 defense and Murray is an accurate passer and furnished some more fast pass catching ends and flankers, UGA will be a scoring machine, add some bigger backs for depth and UGA is there.
With the absence of a big fullback next year and no 2011 recruit in site to fill the position, the spread offense may be where UGA is headed unless there is a big talented walk on or two in our future or someone moves from the line to fullback because they could not gain enough weight to play on the offensive or defensive lines. Of course they could run 2 quality backs in the same backfield and remain in the present offense like Auburn did several years ago..Time will soon tell.

Mark, unfortunately you pretty much nailed it with your five reasons, unfortunately. Richt certainly doesn’t deserve to stay based on recent incompetence(notably since Alabama in 2008)as manifested by no blocking for the run or the pass against competition better than La-Laf; slide off, no wrap up tackling; getting overpowered in the SEC; losing to Colorado this year-how????; just being clueless; coaching down, not up players; under Richt there is no reason to see things will be better ever.

All you Richt haters..and that includes you Bradley…are full of crap. The only thing wrong with the Georgia football program is the defense. I’m not sure we currently have the players to play a 3-4 defense…we lost five really good DL’S to graduation last year and don’t have anyone to fill the void at this time…..If Richt can get a good recruiting class put together this year…especially defensive help, the Dawgs will be just fine next year and beyond…..Let’s face it…didn’t 95% of the people on this blog …including Bradley think that Bama was going to win the SEC this year? Guess what…Bama lost three games…so much for Saban’s great coaching….sh-t happens in the SEC and always will. The teams that panic and fire their coach don’t usually turn things around right away…just ask Bama fans…until Saban they sucked for ten years….Stay the course with Richt Georgia….you’ll be glad you did in the long run!…Can You Dig It!

You people do not know what you were talking about. When UGa was losing earlier in the yr. without AJ…it wasn’t bc of Murray. He still had good numbers…including a lot of yrds. to Kris Durham. I know the offense played a lot better with AJ. The strength of the team was thought to be th O-Line & RBs. So, obviously with an inexperienced QB tehey were going to lean on those strengths, & not open up the play book like they did later in the yr. The team played fine at the end of last yr. even without AJ, & appeared to be playing even better. I would prefer for him to treurn, but with a more experinced QB, & some other receivers that have been pretty good when given the chance…that should be better next yr. Also, the defense should hopefully be better, bc it will be the 2nd yr. in the 3-4, hopefully we’ll get some recruits in there that fit that system better.

Personally, AJ owes GA some playing time, regardless of his “stakes” in the Draft. I think it would be absolutely wise for him to stay, complete his education…and knowing that this schedule, if I saw it right…is not that tough.
Richt has 5 games to work with. Better be wise stepping…if he comes out 1-4 in those games…or worse, he best look elsewhere and GA can make arrangements for a settlement.
Personally…GA needs to get back to winning ways….these past two seasons have been very inconsistent…time for more toughness instead of sermons…

Mark Richt is absolutely the best man for this job! Firing him would do more harm than good. He is a good coach, but his program (as all programs do) has hit a rough spot. The best thing we can do for this team is support it. I agree, that 6-6 is not acceptable, but at least this team achieved bowl eligibility. I think part of the problem is Mike Bobo. If anyone needs to go its him. His play calling is bland and predictable ( I still dont understand running on 3rd and long). But his head should roll before Richt’s does

Go to any other school in the nation and don’t collect garbage for a living, like most 4-5 star recruits that regress at thUGA. “Because I’m not sure it’s going to get significantly better for him in Athens.”- You are going to be eating those words. And why are you trying so hard to push out a great coach? Because a coaching change would create more stories to write? EVERY program goes through cycles of ups and downs (see Texas). There is absolutely no reason to panic in Athens. Firing the coach will scatter the recruits and take 5 years to recover from.

I live in Athens, and did not go to Georgia. I am amazed that a great place to live has such a backwards country village mentality in its police department. Granted, Ealey took a car belonging to his teammate, wrecked it and drove off. Absolutely moronic, no excuse for it. But riding a scooter down an alley, shooting off fireworks, etc…and being arrested for it is a little ridiculous, a well. I read the local news every day, keep up with what’s going on over at the University as it is the engine that drives the economy here. There have been, by my count, four or five arrests that were legitimate, no kidding problems where arrests were warranted (no pun intended) the rest ranged from silly to absolutely ridiculous. No, he doesn’t have a squeaky clean group of players, they’re teenagers away from home for the first time and I certainly did my share of stupid things when I was away at school, they’re no different. Put it to bed, already!

Granted I haven’t read every single post since the article was posted but let’s not get all quick to usher Coach out of town. Some comments have been made about how this is similar to when Fulmer lost the team in Knoxville. Has anyone taken a look at that program since they made the once obvious move to get rid of Fulmer? Richt’s a good coach. In my opinion, the SEC is more cyclic than people would like to admit. Richt has a proven record. Honestly, who else would fill his shoes? I’m sure there’s a Lane Kiffin out there and we would consider ourselves oh so lucky to have such a coach when compared to Richt. He has a .744 winning percentage…IN THE SEC! Come on folks… It’s alright to have a year when you bat .500. Change sports and you’re in the hall.

Mr. Bradley, fortunately for you, your insight is so flawed and off-beat that it manufactures interest, while allowing your apparent lack of (at least) constructive jabber to be ignored. Are you completely fabricating this issue, because regardless of any offers/interest on behalf of “tha U,” there is no chance that Richt would leave UGA willingly FOR ANYTHING! He’s comfortable (lifestyle wise, not w/ respect to job-security obviously), where he enjoys a premier recruiting base, one who’s major concern is competition from the state of Florida, which would sky-rocket w/ a move to Miami. He’s within the Bible Belt, so that his post party-boy “Chrustanity” can be respected, despite the fact that he has trouble relating to high profile athletes…that said, are you seriously saying that he would bring DETRIMENT to “tha U’s” rep? That’s laughable and not worth further comment.
Further, where do you get the idea of his apparent loyalty to the alma-mature, besides the fact that he did, indeed attend “tha U in tha Eighties.” He was overshadowed throughout his entire career in Miami, and absolutely holds more esteem for Fla. St. than Miami. Tell your editors (who hopefully will wake up some time soon) to let me know when their hiring.

I don’t see how we can be much better than 8-4 next year and that may be wishful thinking. I am afraid that Murrey is going to be this generations Eric Zeier. A strong armed short QB big on guts and stats but short on pulling out the close wins. We need a big body QB in this league.

I think Bobo is a great oc and he was a great quarterback at uga. Bobo is a living legend.
