Paul Johnson thinks of something. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)
This we know: Georgia Tech folks obsess over Georgia. (An unkind reference to UGA is included in the song “Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech.”) And it’s beyond dispute that the Jackets lost to the Mutts (another unkind reference) in Athens on Saturday. And yet …
Tech people walked away from that game feeling good about themselves, which never happens when Tech loses to Georgia in any sport. But it happened this time. It happened because Techies, who pride themselves on brainpower, were tickled at having outsmarted Big Brother.
OK, I know what you Bulldogs are saying. I’ve read the responses to this little missive from late last night. To paraphrase the stance of (some) Georgia folks: “If Paul Johnson is such a genius, how come he lost to Mark Richt again? Isn’t the name of the game to win?”
Well, yes. But there can be honor in defeat, especially when the defeat is so hard-fought and cleverly wrought. There can be no denying that the Jackets were the aggressor throughout and the stronger side up front. Those 411 yards rushing weren’t wisps of smoke. (Fun fact: The Jackets ran for two more yards against Todd Grantham’s million-dollar defense than they had against the one misguided by Willie Martinez in the epic upset of 2008. And this time they did it, as I’m guessing you’re aware, without Joshua Nesbitt.)
Urban Meyer, my role model in all things, believes the measure of a coach is how his team fares “when the checkers are equal.” The checkers weren’t anywhere close to equal Saturday night — even Tech people fully expected their team to get blown out — and the Jackets were a PAT from a tie inside the final five minutes. Georgia made three mistakes (two turnovers and a botched kickoff) that yielded no Tech points, while three Tech fumbles spawned three Bulldog touchdowns … and still the Jackets kept coming.
Full credit to the Bulldogs for making the requisite plays at the end, but fuller credit must go to Johnson and his Jackets: They got nearly the maximum from their diminished resources on a night when Georgia’s best player, the sublime A.J. Green, could be seen running out of bounds three yards short of a first down when the score was 0-0. (Georgia scored on the next play, Kris Durham’s catch-and-run, but still.)
And when the careening game finally seemed lost, that rascal Johnson conjured up one last way to make it winnable. He ordered cornerback Jerrard Tarrant to tell the other Jacket defenders, “Let ‘em score.” A Tech employee standing on the sideline heard this exchange and was terrified the Bulldogs would catch on to this strategic bit of jujitsu, but they didn’t. Washaun Ealey burst through the line and kept going and everyone in red and black got really excited — for five seconds. Then they realized they’d been snookered.
Said Richt: “We didn’t coach very good there. We got outcoached right there. It was good strategy by Coach Johnson. I thought [when it happened], ‘He got us there. He got me.’ ”
Said Johnson, almost shrugging: “It was the only way we could win the game.”
In the end his team lost, but the same Tech man who’d told me after the Jackets’ uninspiring defeat of Duke that he fully dreaded Saturday night in Athens was positively giddy in this losing aftermath. And another Tech man, the former captain Taz Anderson, sent this e-mail 18 minutes after the final whistle: “Tonight you saw a great football coach take a group that has little talent and keep them in a game where they were clearly overmatched.”
OK, I know what (some of) you Bulldogs are saying to that: “They’re Techies and they lost– who cares what they think?” And under other circumstances I might agree. But after this wild night I’d suggest both sides saw the same game, which is to say an on-paper mismatch that became an on-field white-knuckler. And I’d also ask this: When was the last time Georgia’s coach worked a game that good?

NERDS NERDS NERDS? Boy you must have alot of spare time on your hands. O.K. Lets make the bulldog nation happy. UGA is the greatest university on the planet. They have the greatest and best macho looking coach in the land. They ALWAYS get the most promising and best recruits. Their campus is the most beautiful in the land. Their coeds are the most gorgeous. (even the fat ones). If their coach can’t walk on water they will fire him. The only reason they may lose a game is because the refs. are against them. If a sports reporter prints a negative comment about UGA hes a Tech guy. Or Auburn guy, Bama guy Fla. guy or anybodys guy but a true bulldog worshiper. Come over to Athens and wear red and black and come to the dog walk and when the team passes by, FALL ON YOUR KNEES. Never mention players arrests or how much jail time they may have. And ALWAYS YELL “WE LOVE OUR JAWJA BULLDOGS”.

I hate that we lost that game, but it was a GREAT game to attend! I don’t know of a SINGLE Tech fan that is ‘giddy’ about it, though. I am encouraged to see Washington getting better at his decision making…STILL a long way to go before he has it down like Nesbitt. STILL waiting to see Hill get confident catching the ball, though he’s looked better the past two games. I don’t believe, for a second, that uga had the better team out there. They capitalized on our mistakes for three scores and we didn’t capitalize on any of theirs. I congratulate them on their win….AGAIN! It was a great game played by two mediocre teams…what else is there to say? I did get to meet Vince Dooley…he was kind enough to take a pic with me and sign a book for me…EVEN though I was wearing my Tech gear. What can I say? He’s a legend! GO TECH!!!
P.S. Vince Dooley wrote in the corner of my book, “Go Jackets”…the man is a kind and noble man!

…..because you have demonstrated once again that you know absolutely nothing about football. By using your logic (and your giddy Tech fans and senile Taz Anderson’s logic) Mark Richt is a better coach than Urban Meyer because Rambo tried a scoop and score instead of falling on the ball which led to a close fl win. Richt is 2-8 against fl and I guess by your standards he outcoached CUM 8 times, but lost. This is a pathetic article!!!
If Smug Johnson is so great, how can his team run 92 plays, gain 500 yards of offense and still lose the game? This offense is suited for nerds who like stats. As I said last year, winning the ACC is like winning the tallest midget contest.
Call Kevin Butler and ask him how smart he thinks Johnson is for telling his players “to quit” .
When does KY basketball come to town? Maybe you will write a decent column then!!!!!

Oh good grief. Johnson has been running this offense for what, 30 years? He racks up a bunch of yards against a first year defensive coordinator who has probably never schemed against the triple option before.
That is the distinct advantage CPJ has with this offense. Not many DC’s have experience defending it and CPJ has enough experience to counter any move that a DC can throw at him.
The disadvantage is that you will never get a “NFL style” QB to come to Tech to run it. Then, when you get in those 3rd and 20 situations, or you have to drive 80 yards with two minutes left in the game, you are at a disadvantage when you cannot throw the ball effectively.
When DC’s have ample time to prepare, the novelty of this offense wears thin very quickly. CPJ has lost both bowl games while at Tech. Overall, his postseason record is 4-7. There is a reason for that.

College Football in the state of Georgia, yes, we were down this year but talk about the state of Alabama buster I live in Muscle Shoals, AL and this state is so screwed up with inbred people it is funny. Take Auburn and Alabama out and the state of Alabama has nothing and I mean nothing except for Gulf Shores. I listen to Paul Pinebum every day just to laugh my a– off at the inbred folks that call in. Say what you want but the fact is that Alabama has and is nothing.

Ga Tech will beat Georgia in 2011, Mark Richt’s final game as coach in Athens. His steadfast refusal to make changes on his staff and within his program has sealed his fate. The unbelievably short-sighted statement today is basically a delivery of the box of nails to seal his coffin. I guess he thinks 8-4 in 2011 will get him to 2012. Sorry Mark, that ain’t gonna get it in Athens. Mr. McGarity has already been told what he must do if HE wants to stay on as AD.

To the question pertaining to the last time a UGA coach coached as well as Paul Johnson did against the bulldogs, I’d say the Tennessee game earlier this year for sure and–since Tech’s ‘brilliant’ ploy that left them losing by 8 points instead of one is a new paradigm for excellence–maybe thenAuburn game two weeks ago. In any case, the AJC continues its pathetically transparent effort to paint Tech’s disappointing year as being a gallant struggle of the oppressed against the mighty whereas Georgia’s comparatively good season (same record against better opposition and a head-to-head win) continues to be critically reviewed. The ever-bumbling Richt’s record against Tech: 10 wins, one loss. The brilliant Johnson’s record vs. Georgia: can it be 1-2 (67% losses)?!

Mark,
Interesting spin you place on the game. After reading your article I had to go back and make sure we won the game I attended last night.
Give credit to Tech’s O line and RB Allen. They did a great job of blowing us off the line and Allen would get 4 yards just by twisting and falling.
Our Defense is a couple of players away. The effort of the players was great and ultimately the reason we won. They refused to give when their backs were against the wall. I am extremely proud of the players, but feel the coaches need to do a better job of recognizing our shortfalls on defense and correct them.
Tech could not stop AJ, Durham, Charles, Figgins, and Murray, but our offensive coaches can and did. We ran 1st and 2nd down in a crucial series into the middle of the line where we had made nothing and then did it again later. Why? The passing game was going.
Finally, we ran outside and it worked. It’s been there all year but we have refused to run it. Not only occasionally changing from run to pass mixes it up, but running in a different pattern does it also. We have speed to run around the corner but never use it until late last night.
When something is working ride it until they prove they can stop it. Tech sure rode the dive to Allen.
As far as outsmarting us…Richt was just being diplomatic and not putting down Johnson. Genius had used his timeouts and you are trying to convince me he was going down the field in a minute and going to score a 2 pt conversion. How was he going to do this…on the ground with no timeouts or with the worst passing game in the NCAA?
C’mon Mark, you are smarter than that. You are just trying to stir the pot and make Tech fans feel better about their situation. If they left the game feeling good, then so much for the myth of their intelligence.

Mark, ordinarily I love your stuff, but you’re in left field here.
The bottom line is to WIN. I don’t care how, or by what style, or by how many points… it’s to WIN. Did Florida kinda outplay and outcoach UGA in 1980? Absolutely. Who won? Did Kentucky outcoach and outplay LSU in 2002? Yep, but know what? LSU won. Did Georgia outplay and outcoach Tech in 1999? You bet, but Tech got the win (stole it, actually….) And did Auburn outplay Georgia in 2002? You could say, but David Greene helped get Georgia the win and the SEC title.
So don’t give me any crap about “honor in losing, Johnson snookered UGA, etc. etc. etc.” The bottom line is he TRIED to pull some trick to get Tech to somehow tie or win the game… BUT IT DIDN’T WORK. Georgia’s defense slammed the door on Tech’s last two drives… end of story, goodnight, thanks for playing.
This is typical loser mentality… a “moral victory.” The fact is, Mr. Bradley, Georgia won the game and has dominated Tech for a decade… and however you slice it, Tech has to stew on this loss for 365 more days. So don’t give me any garbage about an “honorable loss”…. Johnson tried something cute but it didn’t work, so maybe he should go recruit better or coach better and WIN a game against Georgia next year!!!

Mark Richt is an absolute moron. A – you’ve GOT to kick the field goal on fourth down. A no-brainer for any coach at any level. He blew it.
Even bigger – all you have to do is TAKE A KNEE. Game over. Instead he directs his team to run a play, score the touchdown, and ensure that his defense has to step on the field with every opportunity to lose when all they had to do was TAKE A KNEE and win.
OK. Georgia won. But only because they got lucky on both the above calls. They pay this guy big bucks to blow OBVIOUS calls like getting in the victory formation and taking a knee when you HAVE THE LEAD and your opponent only has 1 timeout with a little over a minute left? Those are the calls that make you a national champ or a perennial mediocre team that will top out at 9-3 and occassionally 10-2. mixed in with your 6-6 and 7-5 years, or, exactly what Georgia has accomplished under Richt. Good, yes. But Georgia will never achieve a national championship under Richt.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a coach dumb enough to not do the basic math and run out the clock when he can! Overpaid is an understatement. Look what Petrino has done in Arkansas, Spurrier has done in South Carolina and Saban has done in Alabama…in just 2-3 years. Richt is several years on in Georgia and he has already been outdone by those guys.

He took a doormat program to the Final Four; an outstanding job.. They’ve generally been dismal since. Of course, no one seems to care about basketball around here. Just think what the crowd would be saying about Coach Richt had he lost to Tech, which he came close to doing. Mark dodged a bullet. What we need now is : significant improvement !

Worst post ever Mark. Tech can “feel pretty good” about losing to Georgia all year long. We’ll feel great about having actually won the freaking game. So-called moral victory vs. actual victory? Hmm, we’ll take the actual victory, thank you. 9 out of 10 actual victories, in fact.
Richt is soft and can’t control his team, and I agree with those who say that 2011 should be his put-up-big-or-begone year, but for the next 363 days he gets to live with an actual victory, not some woulda-coulda-shoulda B.S.
