One guy coached a winning game. The other coach won. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
Athens – Give Paul Johnson a couple of months and he could take the remaining Rolling Stones and have those geezers rushing for 300 yards a game. Say what you will about the man, but he can coach the heck out of what he has. At issue Saturday night was whether he had enough.
There aren’t many coaches who can outdraw Johnson with the X’s and O’s, but the game, as we’re constantly reminded, isn’t played on a whiteboard. It’s played by real-life players. And Johnson’s Jackets lost to Georgia here Saturday not because they didn’t play hard or well but because in the end they just weren’t as skilled. Try as they might, and they tried mightily, they could never take the lead.
If anything, Saturday’s game showed us how clever Johnson is. He bled 512 yards out of an offense missing its best player. Tech held the ball for 38 minutes and 14 seconds, ran 92 plays to Georgia’s 48. And even at the end, when the Bulldogs appeared to have scored the clinching touchdown, they looked up and realized the old fox on the far sideline had one-upped them again.
As Johnson said, allowing Georgia to score was “the only way we could win the game.” And rather than alert its players to the possibility and advise them to get a first down and then fall on the ball, the Bulldog staff was caught unawares.
“We didn’t coach very good there,” Mark Richt said, speaking of Washaun Ealey’s 20-yard touchdown run with 1:29 remaining that put Georgia up eight points. “We got outcoached right there. It was good strategy by Coach Johnson. I thought when it happened, ‘He got us there. He got me.’ ”
It was that kind of night. Georgia won the game but left the distinct impression that it had gotten away with one. Johnson’s Jackets messed up early and often and still were one drive from winning the thing. (And then, one possession later, one drive from forcing overtime.)
Tech fizzled twice early — getting stopped on fourth-and-2 at the Georgia 19 after recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff, fumbling inside the 10 not five minutes later. And here came the Bulldogs, seizing a 14-point lead that at the game’s outset seemed like twice that much. But back came Tech, back on the strength of those two Johnson staples: A running game and a sheer stubbornness.
Even the hardiest of Jacket backers were dreading this strange game, in which the team with the lesser record entered favored by two touchdowns. Georgia clearly has better players than Tech, and without quarterback Joshua Nesbitt there are moments when it seems Tech has nothing at all. And yet the visitors kept fighting after falling behind by those two touchdowns, and soon it was apparent that the team lacking its best player wasn’t lacking in guts.
It was 14-all with one minute left in the first half, 21-all with a minute left in the third quarter. And this wasn’t because Tech was playing letter-perfect football; on the contrary, it had taken three Georgia turnovers and gotten nothing from them. And still the game was tied, the underdog having become the aggressor, the Bulldogs looking as confused as they had all season. (Which, given how the season had gone for Georgia, was saying something.)
Late in the third quarter Tech was driving to take the lead when Roddy Jones fumbled. Georgia nosed ahead on Washaun Ealey’s touchdown burst on fourth-and-goal. Then Tech fumbled again, quarterback Tevin Washington pitching to Jones as the Tech back was about to get splattered, and the resulting loose ball was taken for a touchdown by Georgia linebacker Justin Houston.
Another two-TD lead for the home side, this with barely a quarter to go. Surely there was no responding from this, not with the redoubtable Nesbitt a spectator with his broken arm. But doggone — no pun intended — if the Jackets didn’t surge to one touchdown and then, beggaring belief, another. With 4:56 remaining, the Jackets were within a point of even.
And Scott Blair, who hadn’t missed an extra point all season, missed the extra point. And surely that was that. But no. Georgia didn’t lose six times by its ability to deliver under pressure. The Bulldogs moved within field-goal range, chose to go for it on fourth-and-1 and saw Aaron Murray fumble the snap. At last Tech had its chance to take the lead.
And it couldn’t manage a first down. Tevin Washington was dropped for losses on first and second down, threw incomplete on third and fourth, and the Jackets had to be done, didn’t they? But Johnson pulled his let-’em-score trick and still his Jackets kept coming, flying across midfield with 45 seconds left. And then finally it was done, Washington delivering an interception.
Georgia had won and rendered itself bowl-eligible, but the lasting memory of this game won’t be of the Bulldogs and their escape: It will be of Johnson and his Jackets and how close they’d come with all their fumbling and without their No. 1 quarterback. It will be of the coach with the lesser players forcing the Bulldogs to the brink. If Paul Johnson can ever recruit similar talent on a consistent basis — admittedly, it’s a big if — Tech won’t wind up 6-6 again anytime soon.
“I wish I could have found a way to help them win the game,” Johnson said, speaking of his players, but he’d done all any coach could do. He’d put them in position. His undermanned team just couldn’t finish the drill.

“Short Bus” thank you! Hardest I have laughed in a while! UGA will lose at home to SC huh? And to MSU? Boise St. is losing a ton of players and it will be a home game for UGA. At Ole Miss is a toss up? Sorry you don’t know or understand college football. Tech is a for sure win as usual.

Mark,
I’m not so sure Paul Johnson coached that much better of a game. When Murray fumbled that exchange on 4th down, I’m sure I wasn’t the only UGA fan awaiting another beatdown from the Anthony Allen Express. They had plenty of time to score, too, including timeouts, of which UGA had ZERO. Instead, Johnson did the same thing for the second year in a row: he ordered up a very questionable offensive series in an important situation. Last year, with enough time and a timeout or two if I’m not mistaken, he had Nesbitt throw 4 straight times to no avail, with the 4th down play being the game-ending dropped pass. This year, with even more time, he had his backup QB run two keepers and throw two passes when it was the performance of his backs that kept Tech in the game. He made the right call in letting UGA score, but by then he could only throw to win, which without Nesbitt is a near impossibility. The last two years, Tech has backed UGA into a corner and the last two years, Tech has ended up failing rather miserably. That’s Johnson’s fault.

At this point UF would probably let Urban Meyer go. Urban could be Miami’s HC and Richt could be their OC.

I’m just grateful we play Tech at the end of each season. We always win–and Tech always plays its heart out to make it interesting. It’s kind of like watching an old Roadrunner cartoon: Tech is the wily and determined Coyote who always at the end finds a way to fall off the cliff.
UGA fans know who’s going to win but it’s still fun to watch. As a UGA fan, I always voice my thanks for the Georgia Tech football team when I say the Thanksgiving Day dinner prayer.
So, again, thank you Georgia Tech and all its devoted fans.

Dear Coach Richt,
What a run you’ve had as the head coach of the, no, scratch that, my Georgia Bulldogs. A 96-33 record in ten seasons (.744 winning %), 2 SEC Championships, Georgia’s first since 1982, 6 seasons of ten wins or more, a 9-1 record against Georgia Tech, and a 7-2 record in bowl games, just to name a few of the many highlights that the Dawgs have had under your leadership. The Bulldogs reached incredible highs in your tenure that they hadn’t even seen since Vince Dooley was head coach, such as going 11-2 in 2007 and darn near making the National Title Game despite not winning the SEC East. Oh, those were the days. Since the ’07 season, it’s been a struggle in Athens. While the 10-3 season to follow up 11-2 was outstanding, it seems to have been the the peak before a drop to the bottom. Georgia has gone 14-11 the last two years, with no wins against Florida, a 7-9 record against SEC opponents, embarrassing losses to the likes of Kentucky (hadn’t beaten Georgia in Athens since 1977), Mississippi State (hadn’t beaten Georgia in Starkville since the ’50s), and Colorado (who went 5-7 this year and fired their head coach), and numerous players being arrested. I’ve put this off long enough, so I’ll say it: Mark Richt, I think you should not return to Georgia for 2011. No, I’m not calling for Georgia to fire you; I recommend that you take the Miami Hurricanes head coaching job.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that you don’t deserve another year to turn this program around. This is one of those “It’s not me, it’s you” breakup attempts. There have been signs that Georgia will be on its way back to the top again, mainly coming from redshirt freshman QB Aaron Murray. However, last night’s narrow win over Georgia Tech was yet another example of what’s been the problem with the Bulldogs the past two years. Georgia just didn’t look motivated at times, something that is hard to understand seeing as they were playing their biggest rivals. The defense has been the downfall for the Dawgs over the past two seasons, and last night they “shined” again, giving up 512 total yards to a 6-6 Georgia Tech squad. They refused to wrap up and tackle time and time and time again, something that has been a pattern the last few years. Georgia fans are not satisfied with the Dawgs’ play, and the Bulldog Nation is pretty much split on whether you should be retained or fired. With so much pressure on your job, why not turn to the U?
Yesterday it was announced that the Hurricanes had fired head coach Randy Shannon, who went 28-22 as Miami’s head coach. This could be a perfect fit for you! You are a Miami alum (played under the great Howard Schnellenberger), you went to high school in nearby Boca Raton, and you’ve proven in your time as Georgia’s head coach that you can recruit the state of Florida. Miami’s sudden firing of Shannon makes me wonder if they’ve already got something set up to bring in a proven coach, which could be you. Miami wants to return to their national championship-caliber teams, and you could definitely be the right man for the job.
In closing, I just want to express my gratitude to you in the job that you’ve done rebuilding the Georgia program. As I’ve grown up, I have only known one man as Georgia head coach, and that man is Mark Richt. I have followed the Dawgs since I was 8 years old, and I’m not about to quit when the program is struggling. This letter is not me calling for your job; this letter is not about me. This is about your future in coaching in college football. More and more Georgia fans are getting tired of “losing” (if two decent years gets you upset, just try being a Buffalo Bills fan for a while and get back to me), and another season with anything less than 9-3 could mean the door for the entire Georgia coaching staff. At Miami, you would have at least 3 years to build the Canes and make them contenders. You’ve proven your skill as a college football head coach, and you should still be a head coach fifteen years from now, whether that’s with Georgia or another team remains to be seen. To be it blatantly, Coach Richt, you’ve got a lot to think about. If you head to Miami to take the Hurricanes job, I will be rooting for you to win every game you play. If you return to Georgia next year, I will do exactly what I did this year and what I have been doing since 2002: rooting for my Georgia Bulldogs.
Sincerely,
Jordan Hill
P.S. Go Dawgs!

Dawg H8R, I honestly think SC has a shot. They play ball control and pretty decent defense. It is a heckuva note to cheer for Sabin and now Spurrier in BACK TO BACK weeks, but I don’t know anyone in the SEC besides an Auburn fan that will pull for Auburn.

Coach Mark Richt is a much better coach. I could never tell my players to let the other team score on purpose but it appeared that he was telling them to do that all night since the Dawgs seem to be able score from anywhere on the field at any time. Our only problem was that we scored so fast the defense stayed on the field too long.

Chris….
Boise St. has to get up for one game in 2011, against UGA….UGA has lost every key offensive weapon…..Boise St. returns 16 starters and 17 backups…..
South Carolina returns more offensive weapons that UGA even has on its roster and has a heck of defense while UGA gives up 500 plus yards to EVERYONE…..
New Mexico St. ,. everyone beats them…..
MSU returns almost everyone and they shut down UGA with AJ Green and Kris Durham and they will be gone….Mullen is a better coach than Meyer and look at his recruiting class( not too shabby)
Ole Miss and Houston Nutt are desperate after a pitiful 2010 season and he will go out and sign JC players to contribute immediately and will find a win games like the one at UGA.
Florida BEATS UGA annually…..remember the name Driskell…a Big QB
Kentucky lose a QB, but their very young defense is returning intact.
GT and their freshmen QB is one year older and Paul Johnson is getting his recruits in place.
Auburn will go out an buy players but will need to find new ways to funnel money to them as their pipeline of cash is temporarily blocked by a federal investigation…
Keep LAUGHING Because EVERYONE Else has been laughing at UGA all year……

Short Bus, if they have been laughing at UGA all year, I wonder what they are doing to Tech now after losing to UGA : ) Again, sorry you are a moron when it comes to UGA next year. Murray broke the UGA QB record for passing yards as a freshman. He will only be better next year. Again, 10-2 with the losses coming to Florida and Tennessee. Tech next year? Ha, I would guess 5-7.

Cam Newton has given Auburn their money’s worth. But I hope that train gets derailed next week.
If it “hurts” the SEC, then so be it. A lot of dirt exists in this conference. A lot. Jawja has it’s share of dirty skeletons its closet. Before relying on throwing all your old money into buying highly rated recruiting classes, try COACHING and DISCIPLINE. Carolina got rid of a sure draft pick in Wesley Saunders for these reasons.

The best of time at UGA have long been gone and your annual beatings at the hands of better coaches like Spurrier, Saban, Meyer, Dooley, Mullens, PhillIps. even Chizik, are becoming more common place each season.
Go to Miami, enjoy the sun, play that throw it around football, the thugs their do not need recruiting as they do at UGA, they live all around campus and would love to invade a college campus and physically attack players legally.
Get out before UGA runs you out and that day is coming whether you like it or not….do not become the Texas A&M of the SEC…no longer relevant but every 5 years has a decent season…..

this is Johnson’s third year, I think. why make excuses for his talent. those are his players against a 5-6 team.
Can we stop this lie? About half of the players who see action this year are his. Next year will be mostly PJ’s players. I still count 6 guys who will be RS-Sr’s who will get significant playing time next year, and at least 4 of them will be starters, if I had to guess. Also, from the 2008 class, there will be 7 players who will get playing time who committed to Tech while Gailey was still coach. I am guessing there will be 2-3 starters from that group, depending on whether Peeples starts getting phased out for PJ recruits. The point is that the starting lineup next year will still be ~30% Gailey recruits, although the 2-deep next year will be >75% PJ recruits. PJ gets 2 more years before we start to assess whether he’s actually a good fit at the BCS level.

Dominated
November 28th, 2010
8:54 am
Georgia got dominated and anybody that thinks otherwise is a fool. First downs Tech 32 UGA 18. Total plays Tech 85- UGA 44. Time of possession Tech 38:14 UGA 21:46. If you would have told me Tech would have 512 total offensive yards and 411 of them rushing I would have certainly believed Tech would win. The PAT should have never been kicked. We should have went for two. UGA should be concerned about their football program. At Tech we are headed in the right direction. Lose your starting QB and still putting 512 yards on a team on their home field. Yes final 42-34 but one team is moving foward and the other will never be playing for championships again. In the end I am glad Tech lost or many of my Georgia friends might have killed themselves like St. Simmons and the other posters who obviously live for UGA football and still think Hershel Walker II and Lindsey Scott III are going to show up on campus. Enjoy the next 365 days because most people who watched that game know that UGA got their butts kicked on their home field.
Really? Georgia practically gave the game away with all the turnovers. Both teams defenses sucked. When it took teck 7 or 8 min to score it would take georgia about 1. Georgia gained just about 20 yards less total then tech. That isn’t being dominated.. Obviously the dawgs had a horrible season…..hopefully they can get it worked out and have a better one next year. It doesnt really matter what bowl they go to now…but ending the regular season on a win sure was nice. Don’t be bitter…you all lost…again. Maybe you can make another ring.

On the UGA defense, when you convert to a 3-4 you must recruit for a 3-4. Needless to say, I believe UGA will have a better defense next year after the freshman from this year start, and more recruits come in. Now saying that, Tech’s offense needs help. They are NOT a come from behind team in the 4th quarter even against mediocre 5-6 teams like UGA. They cannot pass. They need VAST improvement. UGA had as many yards and only 40 plays to Tech’s 90+. So that meant Tech only averaged less than 5 yards a play. That may work in the ACC but not the SEC

Hey Katherine. How you doing today? Speaking from experience, UGA HAS NO DRUG TESTING! UGA HAS BEEN HURT BY A LOSS OF INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL. UGA HAS BEEN ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY THE LACK OF DISCIPLINE IN THE PROGRAM. Same applies for the Gayters. Or any other team that experiences too many arrests. A direct corrolation could be made between that AND unchecked drug use.

Your season was in the basement. Go quietly to your corner and stop drawing attention to yourselves and your pathetic season.
How embarrassing for the state of Georgia!!
To any visitors watching a reading this blog, please do not think that the UGA fans here are representing the best of Georgia. We’re much better than the classless representation of Dawgs on the pages.

Year after year after year, same excuses why Tech can’t beat UGA. Just take the 9th loss in 10 years and be done with it. That’s the way it will probably go the next decade too. What would Tech’s record be in the SEC? I would say maybe 3-9 this year.

amazed, only thing more embarrassing than UGA bragging is Tech making excuses for losing yet again to the worst team in 15 years at UGA. Last year was bad enough when the ACC champions lost to a then 6-5 UGA team
