Live from Athens: Does anybody really think Tech can win?

It could be a long and gloomy night for the visiting Jackets. (Photo by M. Bradley)

A lovely day could become a long and gloomy night for the visiting Jackets. (Photo by M. Bradley)

Athens – The most intriguing part of what isn’t a very intriguing game — how riveting does it get when the teams have an aggregate record of 11-11? — is how few people are giving Georgia Tech a chance. And by people, I don’t just mean Georgia fans or Vegas neutrals. I mean Tech fans, too.

I haven’t yet met anybody who thinks the Jackets can keep this close, let alone win. Indeed, the consensus seems to be that the betting line — it’s at 14 points as I type — may actually flatter the visitors. And I wouldn’t disagree. I think this is at least a two-touchdown game.

Having said that, we must also note a couple of things. First, the Jackets enter as the team already bowl-eligible. Georgia, as we know, has to win tonight for the privilege, such as it is, of gracing a postseason game in either Memphis or (shudder) Birmingham. Which leads us to our second notation:

Georgia is, on the record, eminently beatable. Six teams have already done the deed. Every time Georgia has played a team that finished above .500, it has lost. (Kentucky lost to Tennessee on Saturday to fall to 6-6, and Kentucky represents Georgia’s best win.) That’s a pretty staggering statistic. But Tech, as we know, has been only slightly better in a demonstrably worse league.

Ergo, the team with the better record enters as a two-touchdown ‘dog. (Not to be confused with Dawg.)

The striking part of Tech’s season to date has been how almost nothing about it has struck you. There had been no rousing victory, unless you count winning in Chapel Hill over a North Carolina team missing 12 players due to investigations of some sort. There had been no blowout loss, unless you count the 34-10 defeat suffered against Miami in the Jackets’ first game without Joshua Nesbitt. The only real drama came in rallying against Wake Forest, and there should be no drama ascribed to any game involving Wake Forest.

Paul Johnson believed his stylized offense would keep on truckin’ without Jonathan Dwyer and Demaryius Thomas, and it has and hasn’t. Tech ranks first in the nation in rushing, next-to-last in passing. Anthony Allen hasn’t been quite as proficient as Dwyer, and all the Jackets’ receivers combined haven’t begun to match the departed Bay-Bay.

The defense was supposed to be better because of Al Groh and his 3-4, but it hasn’t been. It hasn’t gotten worse; it just hasn’t improved to any significant degree. Derrick Morgan, also gone to the NFL, had 12 1/2 sacks last season; through 11 games, Tech as a team has 16.

And here we pause to recall: This time a year ago, Tech was bound for the ACC championship game, which it would win, and then the Orange Bowl, where it would lose. If we cast our glance back 52 weeks, we see that the Jackets are 7-7 over their past 14 games. The upset loss to Georgia has sent the Jackets back to mediocrity.

Only that’s not quite true. It has been a long time since the Jackets had a six-loss regular season, which is what they’re facing if/when they lose tonight. The last time was in 2003, Chan Gailey’s second year. (Tech was also 7-6 in Gailey’s first and last season, but those involved bowl losses, and in 2007 Gailey had nothing to do with the sixth loss. He’d been fired.)

The promise inherent in Paul Johnson was that he, by force of both stylized offense and outsize personality, would prevent the Jackets from ever backsliding this far. But here Tech is, a middling 6-5 and facing a game in which it’s expected to get drubbed by a opponent carrying a losing record. Two years ago, when Johnson’s team stunned Georgia here, that wouldn’t have seemed possible. A year ago, when Tech entered this game ranked No. 7 in the land, it wouldn’t have seemed possible. But here the Jackets are, on a slippery slope that could get a lot more slippery before the night is through.

And with that, the floor is open for questions, comments and observations about the Jackets. (I’m not supposed to be discussing the Bulldogs, which I’m sure will make UGA backers shout, “Hallelujah!”) I welcome your figurative presence. And if you’d care to come up to the press box and sit beside me, please bring a space heater. Apparently the Sanford Stadium folks are conserving electrical energy. Brrr.

Mark my words, we win this game. Coach Paul Johnson is undefeated in the cesspool of Athens and our offense if just now starting to click.

Our defense excels against the run and we will limit the production of UGAg’s two criminal running backs.

Our D-line will pummel Erin Murray and knock him out of the game, gonna have to bring in that Lassiter backup QB.

We will regain ownership of this state! THWG

Last year Mark people were saying the exact same things about UGAg, they had NO shot at winning against a 10-1 GT powerhouse. I still am sick to my stomach watching replays of King running untouched past Morgan Burnett on a 75-yard TD run and how many total rushing yards did they end up with? Something like 400.

This is setting up nicely for the new sheriff in town to put the prisoners back in jail.

I don’t like our chances. I too was not brave or bold enough to go down to the cesspool, where I notably was 2 years ago. Of course 2 years ago, I, and all other Tech fans felt a lot better about our chances. My how times have changed. Gonna need quite a few breaks and some Murray mistakes to win this game. Gonna need a HUGE Game by Allen, Tevin, and the LITTLE mentioned Orwin Smith to make this a game/win. But I will cheer us on none-the-less!! GO JACKETS!! WHATS THE GOOD WORD???

Yes, of course Gtu can win. Against a team as poorly coached and as mentally weak as UGA, anyone can win. I fully expect this to come down to the 4th quarter and for UGA to somehow wet their pants and lose the game.

My prediction is that UGA, down by 2, drives into position to kick the game winning field goal with 1:00 left, and then has a bad snap.

If UGA loses this game, Mark Richt will be fired by Christmas, and you can mark that down. There is only one unpardonable sin for a UGA coach, and that is losing to Gtu. If Richt loses to a terrible Gtu team to cap off a pathetic season, he will not make it to New Year’s Day.

Alls I will say is IF (and it’s a BIG if) GT loses this game then we must fire Al Groh prior to our bowl game in Shreveport. This team was a pre-season top 20 team with a bonafide Heisman candidate in Joshua Nesbitt and as GT alum I will not stand idly by and let the offensive brilliance that is Coach Paul Johnson be washed down the toilet by the lousy defense under Al Groh.

Yes I know we lost a buttload of players to the NFL but excuses are for losers, We Run the ACC and there is NO EXCUSE for losing to the mutts when we are clearly the superior team.

Curious what the defensive secondary adjustment on AJ will be. Are we going to see Tarrant ‘locked’ on him the entire game with another safety rolled over? How quick before they play action pass deep to test the waters? (Last year, they didn’t even attempt a pass on the first drive).

On offense, we haven’t run that tackle-eligible screen in the two years since the last time we played at Sanford. Has Paul put that back into the playbook this week?

Texas last year won 12 games and lost in the National Championship bowl. They lost key players to graduation and the NFL and now there 5-7. While I am dissapointed in Tech’s season as anyone else will be, it was kinda foolish to believe that Tech could lose 4 great players and just keep on trucking. Such things happen to programs, just look at Florida. Its a down year. Now, if there is 2-3 consecutive down years, then coaching must be addressed. I still think that in the future Tech can compete for ACC and national championships.

Think about the football team THUGA puts on the field. 96% of the players are academically provisionally accepted, with Adams and his cronies knowing full well that they will use up all their coaching and tutors and elligibility and then have their asses kicked out on the street and soon be pushing grocery carts around Atlanta looking for a warm place to sleep. What a pitiful way to run the State’s flagship university.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Hey Mark,
Thanks for the opportunity to speak on this here subject. First, I am not a fan of Georgia or Georgia Tech. That being established let me say that in head to head competition, Georgia Tech is by far, and I mean far, the classiest of the two fan base wise. This comes from attending games on both campuses and talking with fans/alumni of both schools. Now, I do not believe Tech will win this game but, I will wager that if you watch the game closely you will see which school has the classiest players, that being Tech. Georgia; has had too many years of the best athletes and shown so little with their wealth. Players will win this game for Georgia, not coaching. Enough said.

Mark, If you’ve seen Tech play much this season, then you KNOW that they’ve stopped themselves on offense MUCH more than their competition. Rushing yards still lead the nation, but penalties, dropped passes, and fumbles had killed scoring drives.

If Tech merely cuts their own mistakes in HALF (say, only 4-6 procedure calls, fumbles, and dropped passes), then this can be a close game.

And what if QB Aerrant Murphy’s (-law) gets hit in the sternum … or Washedup Early fumbles a lot? Maybe Courtdate King can have a fumble or two!

Hey, … I’m not saying Tech can win, but if UGag was so great, they wouldn’t have lost 6 games.

Paul Johnson could learn from Nick Saban and Mack Brown. They both took responsibility for their team’s failures this year. Johnson ALWAYS throws his team under the bus.
He won the ACC with Gailey’s recruits. His high school offense will never win big again. And no big time players will go play in that high school system.

Katherine,
You are right, however, Georgia is the only stadium I have not seen Georgia Fans call out the unruly. Other stadiums I have been in, all of the SEC except for Arkansas and all southern ACC, and several Division II schools, loyal true fans help control the uglies. Not to worry, Georgia will win but, will show the face of the average Georgia Fan. My team of choice is finished so now I will just sit back and enjoy Southern Football.

It spreads across nearly every fan base in the SEC East and even some in the west. It is what it is and unless you dare to wear the opposing colors in Athens one day, you’ll never understand it!

UGA-a Sorry Excuse — you are a hypocrite.

“Think about the football team THUGA puts on the field.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team.”
– Just out of curiosity, how many engineering majors do you see on the Tech sideline? Provisional acceptances are the norm in major college athletics. As long as you have a qualifying score as a scholarship athlete, you’re going to get different consideration than will the general student body. If provisional acceptance were an exceptional thing for Tech, very few of your players would speak English as a first language.

– Can you help me understand how Harrick and Evans bear any relevance with respect to any of the players on the field this evening?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.
– Yes. Having players run felony drug operations, coaches misrepresent their academic and athletic credentials, and players receive funds directly form coaches in the middle of a crack infested, inner-city slum is such a lofty place from which to fall. I hate that you’ve been burdened to share the state with the flagship university to the northeast of your campus.

Good comment by Davie. UGA hasn’t stopped Tech. Tech has stopped Tech. But it really doesn’t matter on the scoreboard. the Dawgs deserve some credit too, because they are GATA. What I don’t want to hear though are the assine comments about a “high school offense.” For a offense that has rolled up nearly 1200 yards and 97 points in 11 quarters against you, well, that’s not what I would call a high school offense. This, according to your own assessment of the ACC. And the only way your sorry team survived was courtesy of a missed extra point. Also, if those hideously ugly people in the black and red body paint are any indication, you definitely shouldn’t be throwing off on the GT co-eds anymore either. In 2009, the SEC went 6-4 in bowl games. In 2008, the SEC ended up 6-2; 7-2 in 2007. That 19-8 bowl record in the past three years is the best record of all the conferences and the most bowl wins ever by one conference over three years.

Oh, and the SEC won the National Championships each of those years, as well as the prior year (2006).

So, how’d the Big Ten do? This past year (2009) they went 4-3. In 2008 they were 1-6. In 2007 they were 3-5. So, a cumulative record of 8-14 over the past three years. Note that Ohio State lost both the ‘06 and ‘07 Championship Games to Florida and LSU.

Actually UGA has two really good linebackers that transfered in and will be eligible. If UGA can sign a couple of big nose guards, they might be ok. The schemes were not bad, but the our defensive backs/safeties are just not very good. They are in position to make plays but just don’t get it done. Maybe 2nd year in new scheme will help.

And AL defense with Smart and Saban didn’t look much different than UGA’s against AU yesterday.

I don’t know about GT. They seemed to do ok against ACC teams, but against a wide open offense with speed, they looked a bit slow.

I don’t care what UGA does against the TO. USC, AL, FL, LSU do not run the TO. They don’t run it for a reason. UGA’s defense will improve next year. How much is the question. And Groh’s defense has shown nothing to indicate it can handle a wide open pro style offense. The UGA schemes were the same as AL and LSU used against AU. @Just Saying: You are obviously just another delusional SEC fan who thinks that all that matters is to have your defense stacked with coal black defenders who couldn’t catch a cold….meanwhile your team is 63rd in the country and Oregon is #1, TCU is #3, Wisconsin is #4, and Stanford is #5….I know it hurts and its painful….and you want to ignore the facts…..and you’re hoping not to have to tell your wife that your going to Boise to play on the SmurTurf in late December in the Roto-Rotor Bowl against SE Alabama State for some semblance of respectability…..but, dude sometimes you just have to live with reality…….

Another key to the game, UGA fumbling on 4th and 1 with a few minutes remaining. Then the defense sacking or tackling the QB for a loss on 2 consecutive plays. The QB looked scared or just out of place from then on.

That’s the problem, TX Dawg…unless you and What Now are going pro in some sport next year, the rest of the real world requires that you be proficient in these areas. Of course, I shouldn’t expect dawg fans to understand the importance of correct grammar; most of you don’t have jobs that require any reading or writing. And yes, it’s grammar, not grammer. Please forgive me for trying that small bit of corrective criticism.

Dawgs!!!, you got to remember that until a month ago Washington had not started a college football game. I’m sure Washington felt somewhat out of place, but I doubt he was scared. Overall, he has done a far better job of filling in for Nesbitt than I think anybody expected. He definitely got better each game he played. If Murray had not been able to play tonight, do you realistically think whoever subbed for him could have been as effective?

Cornelius, I would say they are about equal. There are some dogs on both campuses. Just because a girl majors in engineering, doesn’t mean that she is ugly. And similarly, just because a girl majors in artsy-fartsy stuff or education doesn’t mean she is pretty. PLUS, there are more girls on campus in Athens than there are in Atlanta.

Cornelius, all I can say to that last comment is that you obviously don’t have much of a standard for coaches if you think (and constantly pick on) the way one looks. Hell, look at Beamer at VT. He looks like he has a goiter, but that sure doesn’t mean he can’t coach. Talk about facts and leave appearance out of it.

Aaron Murray is the reason UGA almost lost. He should have gone out there on defense and stopped the triple option on his own. And his completion rating was a horrid 79% with 271 yards and 3 touchdowns. Are you kidding me? He is the worst QB ever to play at UGA.

whatever

November 28th, 2010
2:22 am

This was not as much as a “win” for UGA as Tech (and one official) shot themselves in the foot. If CPJ kicks the FG in 1st qtr instead of going for it – Tech wins. If, as the replay showed over and over, the official REVIEWING the call had MADE the right call (I don’t know WHAT replay they were looking at, but the network replays showed over and over) that the GA player who recovered the Tech fumble – actually had a foot (or toe) out-of-bounds – Tech wins.
Had the Tech player not fumble on the 5 in the first-quarter Tech wins.
Besides – I thought the DAWGS with their “superior” talent was SUPPOSED to beat Tech pretty bad – which they didn’t – and still should not have won. And for that idiot DawgThug who displayed the sign at the end of the game that said “we still run this state” – what a joke that is; When was the last time a team RAN over 400 yards against the DawgThugs.
If I were GA – who once again – was supposed to win big – even with a WEEK off (BTW – isn’t that the excuss that DawThug fans and CMR uses every year after they get their annual beat-down by Florida – that “well, Florida had a big advantage by having a week off before the game”), I would not consider this a real victory. They didn’t WIN as much as Tech (and an official) lost it.

Mark – As this fiasco is now over, the question I have is how did either one of these outfits (I can’t force myself to actually refer to either as a team) possibly win 6 games? I find it hard to believe there are 11 teams in this country worse than Tech or UGA. Both Tech and UGA are an embarrassment to the state. Georgia Southern may actually be the best team in the state. I know there are better than James Madison.

I ask you: Have you ever seen an outfit as dumb as UGA? While I could talk about paying $750,000 to a DC who is absolutely clueless as to how to stop a pretty pitiful example of the triple option (I think Georgia Southern actually runs it better than Tech does); or how when we finally stop Tech one time and then come out with a 7 point lead and run it twice for a total of 1 yard and put the offense in a 3rd and 9 bind (resulting in the absolutely pitiful Tech defense getting it first sack in 4 games); etc but those are minor examples of dumb when compared to not having enough sense to take a knee with 85 seconds left in the game and giving Tech its only chance at winning the game. That indicates we are as dumb as dumb can possibly be. Again, the real miracle is that we won 6 games, although it is obvious that LA LA, Idaho State, Vandy and Tech are about as sorry as anyone could possibly be. I remember you commenting how sorry UT was when we played them. That leaves KY who lost to UT today. Man, we are pitiful.

Just how bad will we be when we lose our best player to the NFL?
