Tech versus Georgia: This year it’s the duel of the dual duds

Georgia's Ben Jones after the upset of Tech last season. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Call this the season of dual lead balloons. Georgia was ranked No. 23 in the preseason Associated Press poll, dropped from the Top 25 on Sept. 12 and hasn’t received a vote since. Georgia Tech was ranked No. 16 in the preseason poll, dropped from the Top 25 on Sept. 12 and received its last votes on Sept. 19.

Add their records together and you get 11-11, which is the essence of mediocrity. Add their conference records together and you get 7-9. Add their road records together and you get 3-7 (or 3-8 if you count Georgia losing in Jacksonville, which was technically Florida’s home game this year).

Total the records of the teams they’ve beaten and you get 44-76, and that’s skewed by the 9-2 of South Carolina State, which Tech defeated on Sept. 4 and which will face Georgia Southern in Round 1 of the FCS playoffs today. Together, Tech and Georgia own victories over two FBS bowl-eligible opponents, and both North Carolina and Kentucky are 6-5. (And are, not to put too fine a point on it, basketball schools.)

And yet … all duds are not created equal. Our friends in Las Vegas favor Georgia, which has a losing record, by 13 points over Tech, which has a winning record, if just. Strange as it sounds, that line seems about right: To see Georgia play is to wonder how it lost six games; to view Tech is to wonder how it won that many.

Tech is 61st among 120 FBS teams in points scored, 59th in points yielded. It’s first in rushing offense, next-to-last in passing offense. Georgia has scored more points and yielded fewer and ranks 18th nationally in turnover margin and 36th in penalties — the Jackets are 54th and 87th in those key categories — but it has lost five times to Tech’s six. Part of this can be explained by noting that the SEC is stronger than the ACC. Part, but not all.

Georgia’s closest victory of the season was 44-31 over Kentucky. Tech has won four games by a narrower margin. Georgia clearly has better players — and Tech has been without its best man, quarterback Joshua Nesbitt, since the second quarter of the Virginia Tech game Nov. 4 — but the Bulldogs have developed the distressing habit of losing every losable game. You can say, “That’s just bad luck,” but is it luck when it happens all the time?

Two weeks ago Georgia led the nation’s No. 2 team by two touchdowns on the road. Auburn rallied to tie 51 seconds before halftime, whereupon the Bulldogs ran a draw play and let the clock expire, secure in the knowledge they’d get the ball to start the second half. Whoops. Auburn perpetrated a slick onside kick and took the lead without Georgia touching the ball. From 21-7 ahead, Georgia would lose 48-31 on a day when it didn’t turn the ball over. That wasn’t bad luck. That was bad coaching.

This will be Mark Richt’s 10th game against Tech; he has lost only once, wasting a 28-12 halftime lead in the wink of an eye two years ago. That was the game that made Paul Johnson the toast of Georgia Tech, the new coach having done in Year 1 what Chan Gailey couldn’t manage in six tries — he beat Georgia. But Richt upset the Jackets last season when Tech was ranked No. 7 and bound for the ACC championship game, and now there are questions about Johnson, too.

That ACC title was achieved largely due to the production of five Gailey signees, four of whom left early for the NFL. The fifth is Nesbitt, who’s a senior. Before the season Johnson hailed this as the deepest of his three Tech teams, but what the Jackets added in numbers they’ve lost in high-end quality. And early recruiting returns for 2011 aren’t glowing. (Scout.com has Tech 38th; Rivals.com doesn’t list the Jackets in its top 50.)

As we approach our latest installment of Clean Old-Fashioned Hate, so much is murk. It’s unclear if Richt, who has presided over three consecutive seasons of diminishing results, can again maximize Georgia’s resources. It’s unclear if Johnson, who has fallen from a conference championship to 6-5, can again find enough players to win big. Likewise unclear is when, or even if, this proud football state will again matter nationally.

It’s real simple. If Tech can hold Ga. to under 40 points they’ll win. Everybody else has this year. With Murray coming up Ga. needs to build up a defense. MR is an offensive coach period. I don’t think he even understands how good defense works. “GO DAWGS”

I need to make a public apology here. The other day I compared georgia and their fans to trash, and this was a terrible insult to garbage everywhere. A landfill is too good for the vermin that is the dogs. Tech, all you have to do is go straight at the dogs and kick them in the teeth, if you do they will back down and you will win the game. They are good at talk but when challenged they can not back it up. The same goes in the parking lot also, they are nothing but loud mouthed cowards. The rest of the country is depending on you Tech, no one wants to see the ignorant dogs in a bowl, so do your best and take the foolish mutts down. Good luck, you have a lot of extra fans this week

Wow…Did you think at the beginning of the season that these teams would be facing each other with the record that they have? Both teams are very weak. That is just a fact. Wait till next year come to mind.

You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.

So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

Dawg Fans beware: Mark Wrecked and his trusty Bobo will always find a way to lose… Our only hope is that Paul Johnson and company are even dumber than the UGA coaches…
Quite a difference in the state next to ours if you watched the Iron Bowl yesterday. All those Alabama and Auburn players from Georgia chose to play for real coaches instead of clowns.
Today’s game should be called the Flubber Bowl.
This is the state of Georgia football: neither UGA or GT have a single vote in the Top 25 today.
Hope and change ain’t cutting it. We need new coaches for both team.
Alabama should be watching the best players in Georgia playing at Georgia colleges.
Then we will win national championships again.
For now, we are a joke.

Saint Jan, aka The Tech Turdlink-

So I see you’re still posting the same tired ‘ole post (under several different pseudonyms) for the last several weeks. I guess creative thinking isn’t a trait commonly found in Tech bloggers. I mean, you do realize that most grade school students can cut and paste, don’t you?

I would’ve thought a mighty Techie grad gloating about his school’s academic prowess could muster something better than a stale 2 month old post highlighting an event that occurred almost 30 years ago. Guess not, huh? I mean really dude, Jan Kemp, Waffle House? What a chump!

PS Enjoy the beat down today… loser!

Bradley, you need to change the caption for your photo. UGA’s victory over the trade school last year was only a upset to the idiot media types who stupidly thought Tech was any good in the first place. The same idiot media that’s been telling us all year long how Boise St was the best team in the country and deserved the NC is the same idiot media that props up weak, barely above HS level teams like Tech every year.

Today, UGA 42 Trade School 6

I don’t get this crap. They are talking on cgd about auburn losing next week and being back in the champ game? Huh? That has been the excuse forever that a team who doesn’t win their conf has NO chance at playing for a nat champ.
So this time they twist the rules? BS. If auburn loses, they are out. Then it’s tcu or wisc. I really hope sc wins next week to add chaos to this cause i would love to see the bcs rats scatter and try to either vote wisc who’s way down the chain or keep aub up. You don’t win your conf, you don’t play in the champ game. It’s always been that way. You can’t change it now for $$$. This is without a doubt the reason why a playoff is needed in this sport that’s run by scum.

If Tech wears their white uniforms, they lose. If they wear the tan pants uniforms they wore for Homecoming and Duke, they win. The alums cannot identify with the white uniforms that have the proven loser “black is out” mostly solid side stripes and black knee socks, and can identify with more traditional-looking tan pants. Even the tan pants uniforms will probably have the black knee socks, which is “black is out” nothing but bust. Black will be the color of the night sky, black will be on Georgia’s helmets, and any more black from my alma mater, Tech, will be an attempt to establish “black is in” for Tech in the future. Tech has tried to dabble in the forbidden color this year, and has only won the easier games in it, against SC State and Wake. Tech does not know how to wear black. If the Tech alums turn off the game because of all the black Tech has chosen to wear, only the student body and the families of the players will watch the game, and Tech will lose. Also Tech will lose Alum financial support maybe, definitely losing support to the scholarship fund with the Athletic Association. I would not send one penny to a “black is in” football scholarship program. I heard in the Tech Alum Assn newspaper “Tech Topics” that “black is out”, which was said by a head of the Alum Assn. This rule has not been honored by CPJ this year. He just honors the NCAA rule changes. That’s the ONLY REASON why Tech has lost. It’s CPJ’s fault. He always has said he has no idea, no magic wand, poor execution. Never his fault. The Athletic Association at Tech is comprised of the Prez of Tech, various profs and the head coaches. Can’t the Prez and profs get the word to him that “black is out”? Calvin Johnson wore gold pants, white knee socks and white shoes when he caught all his passes. Those were appropriate colors for Tech uniforms. Black can be used as pin stripes always at Tech, but no solid, wide black stripes are appropriate.

I think Ga wins but what does it say if they do? It says what they have said all year long. we can beat below average teams . Then comes all of the “wait till next year ” chatter. Wait till next year? When Ga will have less talent than they fielded this season. Look for Ga to win but only to be a prelude to next year that will equal this one.

Think about the football team THUGA puts on the field. 96% of the players are academically provisionally accepted, with Adams, Richt, and their cronies knowing full well that they will use up all their coaching and tutors and elligibility and then have their asses kicked out on the street and soon be pushing grocery carts around Atlanta looking for a warm place to sleep. What a pitiful way to run the State’s flagship university.

Only a few more hours until all these tech nerds scurry away from the blogs for another year. Then their moms’ computers will go back to World of Warcraft 24/7 instead of trolling these blogs. Gotta love those nerds!

If UGa wins, tech fans will get hell when they drive through Mickey D’s. And if tech wins, UGa fans will catch heel when they summon a geek at Best Buy.

I love it when two dueling groups of duds get on the net talking about who’s best. Think of it like this before you continue you stupid post. Tech has qualified for a pathetic bowl and if UGA wins they also quality for a pathetic bowl too. Now folks, that’s a lot to be arguing about now isn’t it??!!

Win or lose today, we need to have the guts to make a change at the top! It’s just time. Dan Mullin, Chris Peterson, Bobby Petrino should be at the top of the list…

I just woke up from a self-induced turky coma. Tech still thinks they stand a chance? Hope those nerds didn’t blow their allowance on tickets to this game. It’s gonna be cold and those yeller jackets will be moving sluggishly. The Dawgs are gonna squash the guts out of those pesky little sissies.

Glory Glory, don’t worry, as the clock ticks off the final seconds of an inglorious bug defeat some pinhead gnat will post 45-42. You’d think they won the NC that game.

Navigator….

Maybe if you don’t like reading about the UGA/Tech game, you should read something else…yeah, dud teams, pathetic bowls…agreed, but real fans will always talk and argue about who’s going to win…Tech and UGA fans would argue about who’s better if we were both winless….Your post is idiotic and you have no common sense. Fail.
