The Falcons have the NFC’s best record. They’re 8-2, having won eight of nine. In November alone they’ve beaten Tampa Bay, which is 7-3; Baltimore, which is 7-3, and St. Louis, which is 4-6 but was 4-1 at home before the Falcons showed up.
And yet: The ESPN.com home page as of 9:25 a.m. Monday asked two questions. “The NFC’s best team? Why not the Eagles?”
And Peter King of SI.com lists the Falcons No. 5 in his Fine Fifteen, with not one but two NFC teams above them. Asks King of Green Bay, which he ranks No. 1 in the league: “Who’s played better over the past month? Beat the Vikes 28-24, the Jets 9-0, the Cowboys 45-7, the Vikes again 31-3.”
Note to P.K.: Uh, maybe the Falcons? (And aren’t the Vikings and Cowboys, against whom three of those four Packer victories have been achieved, the NFL’s biggest duds? Didn’t one just fire its coach? Isn’t the other about to fire its coach?)
Understand: I’m ordinarily not one who believes The National Media Never Gives Atlanta Teams Any Credit. I don’t think there’s a vast right- or left-wing conspiracy out there to ignore our fair city. (And I would stipulate that Green Bay isn’t exactly the hub of 21st Century journalism.) That said …
The Falcons are playing pretty darn well. They’ve beaten the Saints (No. 6 according to King), the Ravens (No. 7) and the Bucs (No. 12.). They’ve lost only to the Eagles (No. 3) and the Steelers (No. 8), both of those coming on the road.
Side-by-side comparison: The Packers have beaten two teams that hold winning records; the Falcons have beaten three.
Further comparison: The Eagles have beaten four teams that hold winning records, the Falcons among them. And Philly beat the Falcons soundly using its backup quarterback. You can make the case, I submit, that the Eagles might — I said might — deserve to be placed ahead of Atlanta, but I don’t see a reason to elevate Green Bay above a team with a better record.
What’s that ? You say the Packers will play here this Sunday? How intriguing. And how convenient.
Guess we’ll do this the old-fashioned way. (Or, for you college fans, the non-BCS way.) Guess we’ll settle this on the field.

I agree, regarding the Packers — stomping the Vikes tells me nothing. But the Eagles looked awfully good last night, and we were nip-and-tuck with the Rams until late in the 4th. And the Eagles do own the advantage, head-to-head.

The Falcons aren’t a spectacular team. They’re balanaced on offense, they don’t turn the ball over (Only the Pats and the Pats, er Chiefs, have fewer giveaway) stop the run reasonably well and force turnovers.
They’ve dominated one opponent and have let too many teams hang around on them. They’re clearly ONE of the elite teams in the NFC, but how can you begrudge anyone for saying an Eagles team, which destroyed Atlanta, and Green Bay who has an explosive passing game and a stout defense might be better than Atlanta?
Trust me, being underappreciated and flying under the radar isn’t a bag thing in the NFL. Keep winning games, keep letting people undervalue you. It works for this team.

Awesome! let them go unnoticed-like Roddy White said earlier this week, they’ll fly under-the-radar the entire season as long as they can. Takes pressure off of them! By the way, ESPN’s always had a theme of thinking that all sports are in located in a Northeast bubble. Haven’t y’all ever noticed how much more attention they give The Yankees, Eagles, Patriots Phillies, Red Sox, Celtics, hell, even the Mets opposed to any other professional sports teams?? Philly is the better of the two teams, no doubt, and it would be interesting to see Philly and Atlanta play for the NFC title…with Vick having the opportunity to make a statement to the Falcons. Falcons are good. No doubt. But if it weren’t for a missed field goal by the Saints and a good goal line stand against the Bucs well things might a little different. Finally against the Rams they closed out a game with an exclamation point.

I love MMQB as much as the next guy (great bathroom read at work), but Peter King also predicted Carolina as a Playoff team and raved about Carolina’s QB play before the season and had Tampa Bay as the worst team in football with a predicted 1-15 record. If I remember correctly, he had Atlanta somewhere in the 12-16 range. He is a great journalist, but he won’t be breaking Vegas anytime soon….but then again, nor does he claim to. But a lot of people respect his column and to have Green Bay ahead of Atlanta is a stretch at this point. I think it should go Philly and then Atlanta due to Philly beating Atlanta heads up. I would say right now, my top 5 would be New England, Philly, Atlanta, Jets, Green Bay. If we beat Green Bay, then we are top 2 no matter what.
It’s been a great season thus far and I hope our Defense continues to get better and Gonzalez can hold on (you can really start to see he is nothing more than a 1st down machine, which is great, but nothing else).

Problem with that….the Falcons are 8-2, the best record in the NFC, and they beat both Tampa Bay and New Orleans.

I agree with BC about ESPN. I dont even listen to the idiots they have on their NFL shows. They try to give EVERY team EXCEPT Atlanta its proper due. First, it was N.O. We beat them on the road in OT. A win is a win. Then it was NYG they said was better than us. Well losing two back to back division games doesn’t look like “better” to me. So when they had to eat that crow…they found another darling in GB. Once we smash them on Sunday in a hard fought win, they’ll probably turn to the Bears if they win and say they are better than ATL too even if we’re sitting at 9-2. I could care less what ESPN pays these guys to say. Like you said Mark, this will be settled on the field for better or for worse.

Until the playoffs begin, it’s difficult to determine the best teams. If our beloved team beat the Cheezits on Sunday (and I sure hope they do), we’ll have one more reason to smile and more reason to beat our chests. If we lose, folks will get pissed and start blaming the size of our D-line, Matt Ryan’s arm and all sorts of other stuff. Tired of repeating the Cam Newton crap? Last week you and the AJC joined the ranks of TMZ and supermarket sensational gossip outlets. Using verified facts is no longer required – just repeat unsubstantiated accusations by admitted shysters is good enough. Rogers asks for money CLAIMING he can deliver Newton via his father to MSU is now taken as gospel, and must infer Auburn absolutely actually paid to get Newton. The Falcons aren’t really the sexy pick right now. That could change really quick if we take down Green Bay. The Eagles are getting a lot of love because of Vick’s amazing play recently. I don’t think he will be able to keep that up and there are other holes on their team. Luckily this isn’t College Football so sports writers opinions don’t really mean anything. As a 45 year Falcon fan, I like our chances. Mostly though, I like the progress. And this is still a work in progress. The brains are adding pieces every year, building for the long haul. I like the competitiveness, the physicality and the nasty streak of the O line. The D is improving, but this is not yet a complete team. The great news is that they’re still young, by NFL starting standards, and will only get better. I’m excited by the prospects and thrilled to watch every game, but realistic enough to know that on any given Sunday, they can be beat. The NFL is about matchups, both one on one and scheme. I can see the secondary getting lit up by another great quarterback on Sunday. I also see a third year quarterback becoming “elite” right before our eyes. His grasp of the offense and his understanding of what the defense is taking away, allow him to get the offense out of a bad play and into something better, which gives you a chance. I hope somehow the Giants take out Philly, as MV7 is not someone the Falcons (or anyone else) want to face in the playoffs. I’d rather see NO and TB (and/or ATL) get the wildcards and leave Philly at home. They scare me.

The big story….that everyone is interested in reading about…..AUBURN VS. BAMA. ME….I say Bama by 14 pts….with the BAMA D stopping Cam big time. I hope Auburn loses….because Oregon or Boise would crush the Tigers in a championship game. I would prefer to see Oregon and Boise State play for the NC. Eagles get the nod, just for the head 2 head victory, but Green Bay rely’s way to much on the passing game for my liking. One a nuetral field I like the Falcons chances against any of them. So he is not disputing that the Falcons could be regarded as superior to the Packers. Since Falcons lost to Eagles in head-to-head match-up, we are no better than second in NFC. Win against the Packers, however, and we’ll leapfrog the Eagles in the eyes of many, I bet.

Does anyone read anything other than the cover of the book? The Falcons are #1 in the latest ESPN Power Rankings after the Bmore game. That may change, but ESPN has done plenty to inflate the Falcons. John Clayton has picked the Falcons over the Saints since week one, calling Atlanta his pick to win the South in August.
If anything can be attributed to Green Bay’s recent homage, it would be the fact that they beat darling Favre. The media still thinks the Vikings are good…
ATL Observer

The NFC South plays the NFC West this year (which is the NFL’s equivalent of gifting). So it’s hard for outsiders to respect the records of ATL, NO or TB in comparison to anyone coming from the NFC East.
The Falcons have lost one game they should have won (the PIT game where Mike Smith elected not to go for the 4th-and-1 that probably would have won it) and won one game they should have lost (the SF game which was given after an INT should have sealed it for SF). They’re 7-1 in the remaining games. It’s hard not to feel good about that. That said, it’s also hard not to see the critics’ points about Philly & Green Bay.
First, Philly. They’re a really well-balanced team: what’s their weakness? Just about the only one anyone can name is their O-line but with a elusive QB, that factors less. Their defense is Top 5 material, their offense has ridiculous young talent, their special teams are solid…and what’s worse, their #2 QB is Kolb….and Kolb is the one that torched the Falcons!
Then, Green Bay: this is a team that could have and may have already won the Operating Room Super Bowl. 7-3 after all the important pieces that got taken away from them. Now their defense is clicking again and AR is on fire.
I’d wager to say that a lot of experts are also waiting for the second NO game for the full picture to emerge on that head-to-head ranking also.
Nothing any team can do but concentrate on its own business. Split the next two games and I feel pretty good about our top seed chances.

Mark, we both know why the Falcons are flying beneath the national media’s radar. I refer to Colin Cowherd, who has said on his show that ESPN’s job is to showcase flashy stuff that “moves the meter”. The Falcons play smart, deliberate football that’s hard to translate to 20 second highlights. Nothing very sexy about controlling the clock and converting 3rd Downs, but that’s the kind of stuff that wins championships – I refer to the Colts and Patriots, arguably the best teams of the 2000’s, who made their reps by doing exactly that. Let Mr Vick have his highlights, I’ll take a Lombardi trophy over ESPN’s props any day.

The Falcons are of the best in the NFC & NFL. GB & “Filthadelphia” are solid…but I expect (con)Vick to soon be exposed (as overrated & over-hyped). The Falcons need to focus on winning the division (first & foremost) & not get caught up in this “best of the NFC/NFL” right now. I’ve been looking forward to this game for a few weeks. I think if the Falcons can get past the Packers, the NFC road to the Super Bowl will likely have to go through Atlanta. I think in fairness to King that the Eagles are playing the best in the NFC right now. However, get past the Packers on Sunday (Yes I know we still have one more with the Saints) but I think a rematch of Eagles-Falcons starts looking good for the NFC Championship.
Oh….The Eagles travel to Chicago this weekend. This won’t be an easy game for Vick and crew.

Having the respect of ESPN is great, but NFL championships are won on the playing field. The Falcons just need to keep taking care of business on the field like they did yesterday. They started out shaky again. They let the Rams take a 17-16 lead in the third quarter. Then the Birds just pulled away from them, eventually doubling the losers’ final score.
I loved the way Turner ended up running for a touchdown when the Falcons were basically just trying to run out the clock. I got a little nervous when it seemed like he was about to just stop before crossing the goal line. Hey, Falcons, don’t ever worry about running up the score on any NFL team, especially the Rams. I’m old enough to remember countless times in the past when the Los Angeles-St. Louis Rams would embarrass our team by ridiculous scores like 56-3. Every other team has also had its share of lopsided defeats over us. Now that you guys finally have the talent to avenge these debacles, I say, “Score, baby, score!

I like the fact that no one is respecting the Falcons a this moment. It is better to be ‘under the radar’ than being on everyone’s hit list. It can also be motivation for the Falcons about not getting the recogintion that is deserved. I hate how the national media gushes over the AFC. It is not an unstopable juggernaut the media has created. Currently, the NFC is 15-17 against the AFC, which is closer to .500 than the AFC being the dominate conference. Atlanta is 3-1 against the AFC and also beat the Jets in late December last year. So continue national media, keep on lusting over the AFC, Philadelphia, and Green Bay. Maybe the Falcons will methodically control the time of possession battles all the way through January.

I’m glad this team is flying under the radar, and hope they continue to do so. I don’t need SI or ESPN to tell me how good they are.
Fact is, this team is good enough to win it all, but it’s also inconsistent enough to lose in the first round of the playoffs. Other than the Arizona game, they have not put anyone away, even bad teams that they should have put away. Good to hear coach Smith is not satisfied…there’s still work to be done. Home field would be huge in the playoffs, so hopefully they’ll keep the pedal to the metal down the stretch.
Having said that, and at the risk of quoting an idiot: “JUST WIN BABY!”

Several things….Remember Vick has admitted that he was a slacker here! Maybe he should designate part of his next contract go to the Falcons for under performing….the more he plays the more film opposing coaches have making it somewhat easier to defend…Falcons just need to win….with home field the Falcons are a lot tougher to beat….Saints and TB are on our tails and the birds know that they so they’ll be playing to win…TB and NO still have to play Baltimore which is still pissed about losing to the Falcons….and remember no one’s in the playoffs yet!

The Falcons are always the Rodney Dangerfield of the NFL. But, fine, let’s fly under the radar and then we’ll get everyone, silent but deadly!!! I love the way this team professionally goes about their business, and that starts from the top with Mike Smith. If we were playing Green Bay on the road, it would be very difficult but this team has the definite Dome Field Advantage! Special teams coverage breakdowns continue to be a concern but our punting and kicking are excellent. Love the way we spread the ball around on offense, that is when we win. Way to go Finn!!! Who said we need a “new Finn” when the old Finn had still got it!! And Roddy after the bad personal foul, went back to sticking it to them with his on field play, that’s the way to do it Roddy! I had no idea Abe was hurt, that really put us at a disadvantage, Sam Bradford played very impressively, just that one huge rookie mistake with the shovel pass, thank you Sam!! I continue to be so impressed with Matty Ice and how he just evolves more every game, what a cerebral guy he is. Love the team, just got to cut down on the special teams breakdowns and like Matty said, get more TD when in the red zone. Go Birds!!

Mark, THANK HEAVENS someone said it. After the Ravens game a couple of weeks ago, the Mass. Boys (King was born there) were crying like children. King: “There is No #1 team in the NFL” Geeeeeez…you can almost see him with puffy eyes and a runny nose. What a child. Seriously, the Green Bay wins are not as impressive as what the Falcons have put together. And you cannot get any more recent than yesterday, where they JUST hung 34 points on a St. Louis team AT HOME, that averaged in the 5 home games before that giving up about 12 (and an average of about 18 per game all together). Against some teams with pretty good offenses (San Diego being the best of that lot). Sorry, but that is damned impressive. No credit. Fine. A lot of these morons picked the Colts over the Saints last year too. Let ‘em stay homers. GO FALCONS!!!!

I am as big a Falcon fan as any, however, i must admit that green bay does look better than us at this point as well as the Eagles, and the Saints are coming on strong. What all those other teams have in common has been the ability to have consistant above-par performance for 4 qtrs. This is something our Birds have yet to accomplish. Its hard to gage us until we see that effort. till then I have Packers, Eagles, then Falcons in that order. With that being said, we can look forward to our toughest limtus test thus far when the packers come to town….

I posted over a month ago that the Falcons, Saints and Bucs will all make the playoffs. So far it has held true to form. If we win the division we will probably host the Saints or Bucs in the divisional playoff game, providing they win their wild card game. I do not wish to play the Eagles with their trickery. Coach Reid always outcoach us when our teams play.We will need help to eliminate the Eagles if they make the playoffs.
With the new NFL schedule format, teams will have 4 or 5 diviional gaves at the end of the year. Four of our last six are divisional games. Go Falcons.

I really don’t care where they rank the Falcons at this point because in the pros (unlike college) they actually have a playoff and the teams get to decide on the field who is best. All of that will work itself out. What I am upset about is that they don’t even respect the Falcons enough to show their freaking highlights this morning!!! Some of us didn’t get to watch the second half last night and some highlights on espn from the team with the NFC’s best record would be nice.

Earlier in today’s “Monday Morning QB” story, Peter King states:
“The Packers, for what it’s worth, look like the best team in the league to me after 10 games for a couple of reasons (and if you want to say it’s the Patriots, I couldn’t argue much, or the Eagles or Falcons or Jets or even the Saints).”
He’s a pretty fair writer and although he doesn’t necessarily give the Birds as much credit as you and I would, I certainly don’t think he’s slighting our team. Coach Smith himself said that this is a team that has yet to play a complete 60 minute game.

When did the Falcons treat him like garbage? If anything he treated the Falcons like garbage. He admitted on not preparing for games when he was in Atlanta. We stood behind him no matter what he did. He was Atlanta’s Lebron. He was that idiot who had to go kill dogs. If he hadnt done that, he still would have been the king of Atlanta. That dog fighting thing was the last straw for the Falcons. Hes paid his debt and its nice to see him succeed somewhere else. But i think all REAL falcons fans are happy with Matt Ryan.

Hey Mark! Last night I went back to August to review your game picks. 9-1 thus far . .. . .told D.Led to congratulate you on an earlier post . . .but since you have this blog running . … .Congrats!!! I remember much of the ridicule spewed out on that post. Well except for the Steelers game you are right on target . . ..and an * on your assessment of Bucs this year (which was the same as most!) as you had both games as pretty much blowouts. A win in the Falcs column and yours anyway. Now, as I mentioned in by post on D Leds blog . . . .I hope after this week the Falcons have the same record as you!! Since you picked the Pack to win:) If the Falcs win . . .which I’m sure you are rooting for . . .both will be 9-2. If Pack wins . . .you are 10-1 in your picks. That sounds like something to take to Vegas!!!

Huge Falcons fan here… ESPN currently has the Falcons ranked #1 on the Power Rankings. And they will likely be there again next week beating St. Lous on the road. Not sure what the commentators are saying, but he “experts” who make the picks have the Falcons at #1. So, I don’t understand the gripe that ESPN doesn’t give the Falcons their props. I still fear Philadelphia and them vs. us would make for a heck of a NFC Championship game.

Frame it like this….
If your girlfriend (Mike Vick) told you that “it” didnt happen, it was all lies and “the truth would come out and set you free”….and then you found out she was lying, exactly how long would you have kept her around?
Remember, Vick sat in Blank’s office and denied everything. And this isnt the local police its the feds (with a 98% conviction rate). Then you fail a drug screen while in pre trial release. (in other words…you KNEW a drug screen was coming) then you lie to Blank AGAIN.
If you are sympathizing with Vick, then I suspect you dont mind being lied to, misled, and cheated on.
As you continue to point out Vicks success, remember you are validating what everyone on this blog, in this newspaper, and in this town said about him for years….protect the football, stay in the pocket, follow your progression and you will be successful.
Its about dam time that guy became the QB he should have been 6 years ago.

I had to look in the archives for your August game-by-game predictions for Falcs. I’m impressed . .. .9-1 thus far. Earlier I actually posted on D-Leds blog of Peele telling him to give you congrats. That August blog was filled with many who “strongly” disagreed with your 12-4 assessment, and particularly certain game predictions. Except for the Pittsburgh game, you are on the money. Now I’ll add an * next to the Bucs game. You picked the correct winner . ..but I think you as well as the rest of us are very suprised by the Bucs . . as you had it a blow out. (You can go in and amend the score for the next Bucs game:) ) Now, I hope at the end of this week your prediction record is 9-2 as well as the Falcs . .. ..since your pick was the Pack to win. Still . .. .9-2 or 10-1 . .. ..you could take it to Vegas and do very well . . … didn’t check how it all worked with the spreads though!

What people have to understand is that the media likes to go to teams that have the “excitement” factor. Aaron Rodgers is considered the league’s best QB because he throws the ball a lot and people tend to like passing offenses. Vick has the excitement factor which the media mistakes as making them dangerous, especially after what happened in DC a week ago.
Since Atlanta has more of a run first offense and Matt Ryan doesn’t throw the ball for 500 yards every game, he isn’t considered a great QB. That should tell you more about the poor media perception than it does about Atlanta.

Tampa Gator. I could not disagree more. Playing Vick in the playoffs would be a nightmare. I dont want to go to a home playoff game and hear the other team QB being cheered for at the expense of our own team. It happend just last year when I was there and it makes me sick.

The Falcons’ meltdown against Philadelphia (which came because of better game preparation by the Eagles as well as being on the road) will very likely not be repeated should the two teams meet in January; I think it will be a much closer contest however it goes, but it could go either way. That first game was an aberration and the Falcons since then have a perfect record.
The Packers come into the Georgia Dome this week so obviously the outcome will affect how the Falcons are perceived by the likes of ESPN and SI. I think this game could go either way but I like the Falcons’ chances playing at home.
Bottom line: any of these three teams could probably beat the other two on any given Sunday, so ranking them is fairly irrelevant. The only thing that will matter in the end is who is left standing after the NFC championship game (and obviously we’d be remiss to leave the Bears, Saints and Buccaneers out of the conversation). The perception by the national media is that the NFC is the weaker conference, but I have a feeling that when all 16 games are played that there will be several very worthy teams with great records headed for the playoffs (and two and maybe even three could come from the NFC South).
For me, it’s absolutely fine if the Falcons continue to “fly under the radar” of the likes of Peter King and the rest; it means they won’t have the target painted so much on their backs week in and week out. But on the other side of the coin, it’s great to see a team with such a chequered history finally gaining not just some swagger but also attaining personal and franchise-level expectations of victory not unlike the Braves had during their big run (that eighth win marked THREE straight .500 or better seasons; keep it going!!!). Make no mistake, these Falcons are learning from past failures and have one common goal in mind: a Superbowl championship in 2010.
Here’s hoping that 32nd pick in the first round of the NFL Draft next year goes to the Atlanta Falcons. Then rest assured the respect will be there both from the national media as well as the entire league.

Atlanta played like a rag doll against the Vick led pit bull Eagles. They were good over-achieving doggies that day. No need to strangle them with an electrical cord. That says the Eagles are a better team than the Falcons, frozen in the time of that one Sunday. Still, the Falcons have not proven that can stop Walrus-boy’s Philadelphia teams EVER.
The Falcons play Green Bay to see who is better between those two, for another moment in time.
All talk about who is better is nothing more than Monday morning quarterbacking, best doone in an easy chair, sipping wine, while Vince Young lights your cigars and shines your shoes. Its a venture into the surrealistic world of imaginary dreams, although I hear it is still real life in some places in India, where good ole boys like to conject who is the better cricket club.
In other words, after the Super Bowl is played the world will know who the real number one is. Before then, it does not matter.

Falcons didn’t melt down in Philly; they got robbed. It was funny seeing the Philly fans boo the refs for the cheap shot by #22; a few weeks ago they were cheering when the little smurf #10 got the drive extended on a clean hit by #23.
ESPN is a northeast based “media” outlet catering to the northeast fan. Their “journalists” couldn’t keep their jobs if they didn’t play up the home teams vs. a hillbilly team.
Although your TV most likely does not have a knob, you can change the channel or better yet show up at the game (on time) and support your home team.

Firstly, power ratings are ridiculous. The only one that matters is the one the day after the Super Bowl.
As for Peter King… yeah he writes some interesting things (with a LOT of filler material) but he’s the last person to be predicting anything about the NFL (he had the Panthers in the playoffs, for instance). And like most of the national media, he’s very flavor-of-the-month. So don’t put much stock into anything he says. Like most of these supposed “experts”, he’s usually wrong.

Peter King has a history of never giving the Falcons much love. He picked us lower than Carolina in the preseason. Now he rates two NFC teams with worse records than the Falcons ahead of them. Mike Smith must have spit in his coffee or something.
I can give ESPN a bit of a pass because they’re all about entertainment. They’re going to beat our skulls in with Michael Vick and Brett Favre 24-7 because they know we as a country are fascinated by those guys.

Peter King is a Yankee who hates everything Southern except for Drew Brees, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. A good writer who has become too comfortable with cliched stories. Maybe not a national media conspiracy against Atlanta teams, but there’s a subtle bias in favor of northern teams in sports across the board.
Some of it’s downright blatant (Tim McCarver’s attitude toward the Braves for example) but most of ‘em probably don’t even realize they’re doing it.

Here’s the deal with Peter King, getting his blessing is kinda like getting yours when it comes to UGA. Not necessary and a total JYNX. Follow me?
If the Falcons would learn to play a complete game and put teams away when they should they’d be higher than 3 or 4 on “Power Rankings”. Now, if the beat GB a the dome this week, it’ll be hard for them to look past these guys, not that I want the attention on the Birds. My philosophy is this, win the dam* Super Bowl then we’ll be the only team they talk about. Well, us and whatever team Brett Favre is going to play for. King loves Favre, kinda like how Schultz used to love on Vick.

If the score in Phily (w/Kolb @ QB!!) had been a little closer more people would be calling the Falcons the best team in the NFC. I’m a huge fan and a long-time season-ticket holder, and I am perfectly happy with ESPN calling them the third best team in the NFC. I think we will find out who we are next week. It’s more likely that Packers, Falcons, Eagles are all at the top together, but we happen to always get outcoached by Andy Reid. Falcons 31, Green Bay 27.
The bigger issue is why hasn’t Fox changed game time to 4pm instead of 1pm next week??
Also, I have never equivocated in my embarassingly crush-like support of MV7. I believe leaving ATL was a part of the whole experience that led him to grow as a person/player, and I am not mad at anyone about him being cut loose here. Anyone who thinks Joey Harrington should have saved his spot while he was away obviously is not a real Falcons fan.
I cannot stand the idea of MV7 coming back to ATL in a playoff scenario; I was @ the Dome last year for the Phily game, and it made me very uncomfortable. I love my Falcons, but I hate the Vick-haters. I watch every Phily play, and I pull for MV7, but if the day comes when it’s us against him in a playoff game, I would rather sell my tix than get caught up in that riot.

Who cares what these so-called experts think?? They all have their head stuck you-know-where while they gush and slobber over Vick, Sanchez, Rogers, Brady, etc. The Falcons are a solid team that has steadily gotten better over the last three seasons and only become exciting when they have to….such as the last minute of a game in which they are trailing. I like our chances the rest of the way and in the playoffs. That doesn’t mean we’ll win but when we do it’s not with flashy qb play, gimmicks, and luck. “Philly beat the Falcons soundly using its backup quarterback. You can make the case, I submit, that the Eagles might — I said might — deserve to be placed ahead of Atlanta, but I don’t see a reason to elevate Green Bay above a team with a better record.”
I wouldn’t put it that forcefully, Mark. For me, it’s clear the Eagles are head and shoulders above the Falcons, as we’ve still got this pesky little problem of the Falcons getting lost with the luggage any time they travel to the Northeast. I bet you any money you put this current Falcons team on the field right now against Brady in Foxboro and the Falcons still struggle to lose 34 – 17. And I don’t know what explains that really. Do you?
“What’s that ? You say the Packers will play here this Sunday? How intriguing. And how convenient.”

Regarding the Philly debacle, every team has the potential for a game like that. What speaks volumes about this Falcons editions is how they got up off the mat from that beat-down and won the next bunch of games. Previous Falcon teams, and some teams in the NFL this year, would have started the folding process when the clock struck 0:00 in Philly. This team is better than most in the NFC precisely because they didn’t fold. Turned that game into just a road bump.
Philly, Atlanta, Green Bay – the top three. Philly gets the nod because of that win. Bring them to the Dome for the NFC championship and let’s see who comes out on top.

I don’t get too excited nor depressed about the various rankings. However, P. King found nothing about the Falcons that was worthy enough to discuss in his six page article. @Tyrone Exactly how did the Falcon’s organization mistreat Vick, Didn’t they make him the highest paid player in the NFL? Even Vick has admitted that he didn’t give 100% while here. He went to prison for 2 years, that’s not the falcons fault, that’s all on Vick. Did you expect Blank to start Redman for 2 years, waiting on Vick to return, if the NFL even would let him return.

Who’s the best team in the NFC? The best team is either (bears, packers, saints, falcons, eagles, giants, or bucs). We’ll know in Dec. What going on with all this North/South stuff? The same people (ESPN) who are supposedly biased towards the North loves the SEC and its football. ESPN loves stars and stories (it is a TV network for goodness sake) so of course it will choose the teams with the more prominent stars. Matt Ryan is a good quarterback, but he ain’t better than Aaron Rodgers. Michael Vick is doing things this year that most people thought he can never do (you know, pass from the pocket and read defenses). The Eagles also beat the Falcons head to head so they get a nod above the Dirty Birds on that fact alone. At least the Falcons are in the conversation. The Bears are 7-3, and those same experts still expect them to fail. When we beat Philly next week, maybe we might start getting respect.

The NFL has a championship, national pub does not matter, it just points out how wrong a Peter King can be. In Division one college a Peter King or Tony Barnhart could and have changed reality, many times to help out a market for the network they are working for. In Tony’s case it is more a case of being a helpless homer, though he does fall into the Ohio State crowd when it does not conflict with home.

Lots of valid points. ESPN has tunnel vision with Manhattan at its center (follow the money.) Let’s also remember that, for four decades, the Falcons were a team not to be taken seriously. They were just a plaything for the Smith family, who never made a true commitment to winning the way Arthur Blank has done. We fans know what a difference having Dimitroff and Smitty run the show has made. And to be certain, the media has been showing some love to Matty, Roddy, Michael, Tony & others as of late. Perhaps the media types are stuck in the mindset of a winning Falcons team being a fluke vs. a new way of life. They will be enlightened soon enough.

Ok, here’s the deal. People who say the Falcons snubbed Vick are trollin.’ If you respond, you feed the troll. That is a conversation that mostly involves ignorant hillbillies getting f*’d with until they post something stupid. Then we all look bad collectively. Vick is cool, but he’s no longer a Falcon. Matty Ice is cool in a very different way. Be glad we don’t have Joey Harrington and move on.
Yes, Roddy plays durty, and we like it like that. see also Clabo and Dahl.
No one knows whether the Falcons are better than GB, but we’ll find out this Sunday. If we can beat them @ home with most of our guys healthy, we are the second best team in the NFC.
The Falcons are a very solid team who happended to get outcoached in two road games this year. Don’t get too worked up about our record because we all know we have one of the softest schedules in the league.
If we even get 10% more of a pass rush, we become the best team in the NFC.

Blah Blah Blah. Who cares! Just win it on the field! Its the same thing I tell my fellow Dawg fans who whine that college gameday doesn’t give our school enough respect. I mean who cares if Mark May doesn’t like my team? I sure don’t. Take care of business and let the cards fall where they may. I feel the Falcons have the right kind of mindset about this, which is a ” lets take care of business” mentality, while the Dawgs took the wrong path by trying to catch ESPN’s attention. It just made them look second rate, especially since they weren’t getting it done on the field.
What sucks about the Falcons is that they reside in a college football state. But now its time for our state to get behind this team. The National media will always talk up the bigger markets 1.) Because there are more people interested in those teams, and 2.)because most of those markets have a greater traditions of winning than Atlants does. Trust me, if the Falcons put a whopping on Green Bay and then go onto clinch homefield advantage, the national media will have no choice but to talk about them. I’m perfectly fine with the national media not giving the Falcons any love. Because unlike the corrupt BCS in college football where sports writers have a say, games are won and lost on the field. Look Atlanta isn’t in a sexy market like Dallas or New York, we don’t have a championship tradition like Pittsburgh or Green Bay, and we aren’t a “Feel Good Story” like the Saints. So our team just has to get used to not being respected. But believe me when I tell you all that this team is being built for long term success, and over time with enough playoff wins, the Falcons will get the respect they deserve.

I have lived in Green Bay for 20 years after growing up in Athens (GA). When I was a little kid you could never see the Falcons because they were always blacked out – actually was a Dolphin fan for a while. That being said, the Falcons seem to be the most well rounded team, Eagles 2nd, Packers 3rd. If (a big if) the Packers can win on Sunday, they will instantly become the team to beat in the NFC having already beat the Eagles. Green Bay is 10-3 under their coach in Domes, but again 18-1 is pretty impressive for Ryan. The Packers defense is probably the best of the NFC and if the offense plays to its potential it should be a barn burner – but I will say “Go Pack.” Green Bay 31 Atlanta 28

What I like the most about the Atlanta Falcons is the fact that they play so well together, they personify the word TEAM. Whether it’s William Moore coming up with a crucial interception one week or Matt Bryant coming through with a clutch field goal, this team always seems to get it done. I like the way Mike Smith coaches and I also love the continuity among the coaching staff and players. As far as the national media’s ignorance towards the Falcons, I guess come playoff time Atlanta will be pretty darn hard to ignore and with the way this team wins games it will be very hard to ignore them when they’re standing on the podium in Dallas hoisting the Lombardi trophy.

Ok, Vick is great. I bought my first season tix when we drafted him. I had a replica jersey signed by him that was the exact style he wore in the Sugar Bowl (I donated it to a charity auction long before he had any off-the-field issues, though). I am a big Vick fan. And I hate the Vick-haters.
I am thrilled to see him doing well in Phily. I am excited about his success in all areas of his life.
He is the most exciting athlete I have ever seen in person.
Now, we still have a lot of football left to play, and Matty Ice is our guy. Get behind the Falcons and Matty and STF with your crying about Mike. Mike is doing fine without you.

Great article, Mark. ESPN’s “Sports Center” routinely devotes all but a tiny fraction of its late Sunday coverage to the Jets, Giants, Mannings, Favre and Brady. After lavishing praise on the Jets for 20 minutes last night, practically showing every play in which the Jets did anything successfully, they managed to show one play from the New Orleans game and two from the Falcons. The entire cast of “experts” have become little more than shills for the larger markets.

Even Mike Smith said in his post game remarks to the team in the locker room, “We have yet to puta good 60 minutes together,” which to me says the Falcons know they still have work to do.this is a STATEMENT that was made by a HC that was 16-0 mine goodness THE real question is what do we have here in the ATL.I am personally very happy for Michael Vick. he a man now, he was foolisles child here . @JoeFann, yes…. THREE yes two more wins I wont be happy with that me AND TG88 have the same dream. that would make me some what happy this year. What about next Year .I personly like too pick at32 every year , i can remember not to long ago that old saying “maybe next year” fly under-the-radar is just fine. let all the team with an 6-4 record and better be the so call best , that let #4, Dallas , philly and all the good plays be seen by other team , as long as we keep winning . I really could not care less what Peter King or the national media says about the Falcons. The record will speak for itself at the end of the year. The Falcons are playing really good football and may do something extrordinary this season. If they do fall flat, so be it. I don’t think they will and if they do not, then Mr. King and the others will have to recognize them at some point. Way too much importance put on these national guys and their opinions.

The falcons look pretty dog-gone good to me too. One problem though, which must be corrected….is when we get into the red zone, Smith and Malarkey start to resemble Richt and Bobo. We too easily settle for 3 points. It ALMOST cost us the game yesterday. Sometimes you have to put your foot on the other team’s throat, and put the game away. In summary, we too quickly switch into a mode of playing “not to lose” instead of the GATA approach earlier in the game. BTW….Roddy White is a beast….I love our receiver corp.

I am a Packer fan and even with my team in the smallest market in all of Pro Sports we still seem to get more media attention then the likes of Atlanta. Consider yourselves fortunate and hope you remain low key until the playoffs. I hated the fact that so many media outlets were picking the Pack to win it all this year, it just puts more pressure on your team. Cant believe NBC did not pick this game up for next Sunday night, it very well may be a preview of the NFC Championship.

You heard it here folks, while Vick has been absolutely amazing, the way he plays, he WILL suffer another major injury before the season ends. He’s 30 years old, not very big, and someone will put a major hit on him. In the NFL, you cannot sustain his style of play like that…

I am concerned about the running game. Is it predictable play calling on 1st and 2nd down or Turner is a step slower or blocking? Two years ago we could run the clock out with a lead in the 4th. If it wasn’t for that lame shuttle pass the Rams would have scored. We couldn’t stop Philly and New England. Dunta Robinson has not been impressive so far. He looks overrated. You guys are really riled up over a fictitious ranking that is meaningless due to the playoffs? Living in ATL, I’m happy for the Falcons’ “recent” success, but to suggest a media bias is laughable considering that the Packers are located in the NFL’s smallest city. Also, lets not forget that the Falcons just recently achieved two winning seasons in a row.
A more pertinent discussion should be how the Falcons are going to slow down the Packers’ offense. Again, the Falcons are having a great season thus far. However, they better give Turner an awful lot of carries if they intend on keeping the Pack from going up and down the field. And don’t forget to watch out for this outside linebacker named Clay Matthews Jr.

I love watching the team line up and see how the defense is schemed to attack the offense but you can not see it. Why? Because the ESPN fellows throws up useless charts and comments that only they care about. I know they get millions of dollars to perform so they have to make up anything to portray themselves as an authority. I usually mute the channel but I can not get rid of the charts. Have you guys ever thought the reason the Falcons don’t get any respect is because they are like all the other Atlanta teams: Thrashers, Braves, and Hawks. They do well during the regular season, but when the post season arrives they ALL play like high school kids. So in order to earn respect you have to produce during the post season!!!! That’s why the experts don’t show them any love because they know whats going to happen in the post season…..

Right now the Eagles look to be the better team, especially the way they previously whipped the Falcons. 31-17 Atlanta is a good team not a great team but there is also parity in the league this year so there really are not any spectacular teams. At this point the Falcons have a good shot at the playoffs.

I root for the Falcons when it doesn’t concern the Packers and also pull for the other Atlanta teams, although the Thrashers are the only one I claim as my “team,” but I think most transplants are realistic about the fanbase in Atlanta. The Falcons have not played up to their potential and still are 8-2. When they stop making small mistakes on defense, they will be very good. They almost beat the Steelers, but were over matched by the Eagles. Vick is good, but time will tell how effective he will be in the long term. Remember Vick was hot, cold, lukewarm, but a good defense they keys on him will stop him. Ryan is more poised however time will tell.

None of this power ranking stuff matters, the playoff slots will be decided in the next 4 weeks . Atlanta is not really shutting anyone down, like Green Bay & though Ryan is playing well Rodgers is in the MVP hunt. Philly is the most dagerous team out there just because Vick is an equalizer for his defense.Contenders will find out who they are, because the fight for playoff lives begin this week. Falcons have been getting some breaks here & there, but that pass rush is a joke, especially without Abraham. If Smith gets outcoached again like in Philly, against the Bucs the cat will be out of the bag.Every team has at least 2 losses so every team in the league has some weaknesses.

If ESPN didn’t have an obvious bias of sports, why would they continually show one Sportscenter Patriots/Colts highlights and talk about every time Mark Sanchez throws a touchdown as opposed to talking about the only 3 teams in the league who are 8-2? Yeah, that third team, they’re the Falcons, and they’re legit. Did anyone else see the stats of how the Falcons play their game during the Rams game? They run the lock out by being EFFICIENT on offense (especially on 3rd down). When you have Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, or Tony Gonzalez to go to for sure hands on a 3rd down (and at worst, Michael Koenen punting it if you don’t convert), you have a legit offense and team. They may not be as flashy or a marquee “big play” team, but they are the most effiecient team in the NFL on both offense and defense (no one talks about how great our secondary has become with the pass rush and Dunta Robinson/Grimes playing corner). They don’t have all the big names, but the Falcons can go VERY far this year!!

The Packers are NOT the same team from the 1st half of the season. I don’t know where this defense came from. By week 3 the Packers were the most banged up team in the NFL with too many starters out. I’m not a pro football fan, they lost me during the strike, (but I’m a HUGE College football fan). But I AM an Atlanta fan. I try to watch every Falcon, Hawks, Braves game I can. Although I watch a larger percent of the Falcon just because there are fewer games. If Atlanta ain’t playing, I’m not watching. So I really can’t comment on “who’s better” based on other teams performances that I haven’t seen.
I’m proud of our Falcons. As someone pointed out earlier, they are still “building” this team. Smith said they haven’t played a complete game of 60 minutes yet. Just imagine what happens when they do. Hopefully they will be peaking when the play offs come.
Despite the trash talk I’ve read by non-Falcon fans, the bottom line is this: Good teams FIND a way to win. It doesn’t have to be pretty, it still goes in the win column. We lost to the Stealers and to Philly (ouch that Philly loss was an UGLY game). The Stealers didn’t have their resident rapist playing when we played them. We won’t see the Stealers again this year, but there is a great chance we’ll see Philly again. I hope we’ll be ready this time because when we see them again it’s go forward or go home time. The Packers issue will be settled for good come Sunday one way or the other, I don’t think we’ll see them again. (why do I have this juvenile impulse to call them the Fudge Packers lol).

1) Dennis Dixon L 236 yds
Josh Freeman W 189 yds
2) Derrick Anderson & Max Hall W 164 yds
3) Drew Brees W 365 yds
4) Alex Smith W 188 yds

Because Atlanta treated Michael Vick so bad when he was here, this lead him to take out his frustrations on the Pittbulls. But the citizens of Atlanta only have themselves to blame for this. I mean people don’t understand the pressure that comes along with $115 million dollars.
Seriously, has Michael Vick ever said anything intelligent in an interview ever? I cringe every time he speaks. I’m just glad he doesn’t represent us anymore- and I don’t care if he wins the Superbowl. Call me a hater, whatever, I don’t care. I honestly don’t care because I would rather lose with what we have than win with Vick. Teams like the Bengals, Cowboys, and Eagles will always sell their souls to win.
I don’t fear Vick but the Falcons staff better come with a better game plan if we get another crack at the Eagles. I think Vick has flaws that can be exposed in the playoffs. When Vick is pressured he makes mistakes-fumbled twice against the Giants because he still hasn’t figured out how to tuck the ball away, missed wide open WR’s on a number of occassions. Also noticed a lot of dropped balls by the Eagles WRs. Not sure if this was just one game or if its because Vick doesn’t throw an easy ball to catch. He puts a lot of heat on it and when he’s slightly off it makes it tough to catch. The Giants win that game if Manning doesn’t fumble without even being contacted by a defender.

Mark I would say that the Eagles are the best team in the NFC and the Falcons second and in the AFC, it would be the Pats and the Jets. The key for the Falcons, I think, would be getting home field advantage in the playoffs, especially in the NFC championship game. The scary thing is that Vick is starting to look polished and at the top of his game in every phase of the game and even the way he is responding to the media now. Matt Ryan is improving also. It would be awesome to have a Falcons-Eagles championship game in Atlanta.

It is obviously way too early to determine who the best team will be when it’s all said and done. The Falcons currently have the NFC’s best record but they have some very talented teams right on their tail. The Falcons have an opportunity to potentially have a reasonable chance to really do something this season. My reasons why: 1. There is no clear cut dominant team in either league. 2. The Falcons have been a very healthy team so far this year with key starters in there most all of the time. 3. The schedule has been friendly with games in cold weather cities all finished by mid Oct. 4. Plus 10 in the .turnover battle has been a big plus and certainly something that can’t be counted on every season. 5. Very good fortune at the end of several close games especially against the Saints and 49ers. In other words, the good fortune the Falcons have enjoyed this season so far will not last season to season. The Falcons need to capitalize on their opportunity this season, because in this league you never know how long it might be before another real chance to do something will present itself. Jerry Jones said last summer that the most disappointing thing about last year(Cowboys)was that we were the healthiest team in the league with only one starter missing time. And you can’t count on that for long in this league. Only time will tell what will happen, but it’s fair to say that the Falcons have had more than their share of good luck on many fronts so far this year. We just don’t know how long it will continue.

The Falcons like the Hawks are going no where. The quarterback is mediocre at best. Hes best play is a hand off. The team revolves around Turner who will be worn out by playoffs season. The Falcons are a COMPLETELY different team in the last two weeks than all prior weeks.
They are no longer predictable on offense and no longer run Turner tackle to tackle whether its working or not.
They now employ a complete offense using ALL the receivers instead of only White/ Gongazles.
This team plays solid, winning -non flashy-football like many, many Super Bowl teams have done.
Kudos to the Falcons for changing the limited offense to a complete offense.

As a diehard Falcon fan even I can see that we are having an Auburn-like season. We have caught some breaks, made some of our own luck and did what we have to do to win. What concerns me is that we can’t seem to dominate anyone, but just manage to outplay them. Bottom line, keep winning and fly under the radar screen right into the playoffs where we peak, beat the Eagles and then the Patriots. A long way to go but we got stay healthy and keep making our own luck. BTW, I can’t stand Auburn. Alabama needs to pull that horseshoe enema out for them this Friday!

at lease lofton knows what everybody else already know. the falcon dont play like champions like philly and saints do. we have the easy road schedule this season. we try too much to give up the game. it only time before it catches up. we need to be more agressive on defence and offence. the other team just having bad luck against us. our rookie look like rookie. our vets look like rookie. the only thing we got is a good kicker. bryant look like rookie too, but he make the kicks we he need to. he will choke before the season over. i honestly think our competition look better than we do in the game they just loose and that good for us. it not good when we loose because it bad for us. Robinson is not real good either. we paid too much money for him cause he cant cover my grandmother. i think the opposite opposing team should target him more if I were them. we have tough schedule coming up. i think if we win a few more game we might still have a chance to make the wildcards but if we loose we might not.

I have got to get off of here but I have one last thing I want to mention………………..the penalty on Roddy White
1st quarter !2-13-ATL 30 (11:55) 2-M.Ryan pass short right to 84-R.White to ATL 34 for 4 yards (24-R.Bartell). PENALTY on ATL-84-R.White, Unnecessary Roughness, 15 yards, enforced at ATL 34.
Roddy, that is something like your friend Michael Vick would do, you cost us 15 yards because all of a sudden your a thug. This team has strong character and what you did was classless. I don’t care what the dude said or did, you have got to control yourself or it could cost us a game, a championship, or a Superbowl. You are not beyond suspension so maybe your head is getting a little full of yourself……………… Get it together Bro.

So the Falcons beat the Saints without Reggie Bush, and all of sudden people want them to bow down. In order to gain respect, you got to put together wins on the road consistently. If you have to ask this question then you are not studying all factor, just trying to rile up readership.

For the Poster trashing the Falcs pass defense .. .what was it 24th? What also must be considered is that they are #6 against the run. That is VERY important . … it forces the other team to pass. It also allows for Ints! Falcons are #3 in Ints. So that 24th is deceptive. What is not deceptive is that the Falcons dominate time of possession in almost every game by a good margin. Also what is not deceptive is 8-2.

What was said last night is something along the lines you have the falcons and the saints both at least 7-3, the wording may not be exact, bad announcers for not specifying the falcons records. People are so sensivitive. You know why the falcons get no love, they do not have that one defining win, where it was like dang they destroyed that team, and no cardinals do not count. Until they start actually putting teams away, they will not be viewed as an elite team. Also, lets be honest do you think the falcons D scares anyone? And before you start, I am a falcons fan, just being honest.

In 8 of the games, what has happened is the Falcons did play the complete game . . . . . .or should I say were ahead when the game was completed. OK, look at the Ravens game . . ….everyone pans the team, specifically D for 2nd half. That was a very good Ravens offense . . …what should be focused on is the great 1st half that allowed them to get a 10 point lead (I think). The Ravens looked good at times, very good. But it was they who didn’t have the complete game . . .as a result of the Falcs D and total dominance in ball control & 3rd down conversions. Same with the 49ers! The Falcs stayed close and then completed the game when it mattered . . ..at the end. If it wasn’t for some great play early against the Saints, then that game doesn’t go into OT . . ..and the Saints. . …obvious not a complete game due to an incompletion!!! No one worried about beating us last year due to bad FG kicking. Same goes for Browns . . . ..we completed that game!!! Steelers game was there for taking . . .we did not complete!!! Don’t think we ever actually started against the Eagles . . . .so no use even thinking about completing there:)

Really who cares about Power Rankings. It’s all one persons opinion. As a Packer fan I even have to admit I don’t see how Atlanta isn’t ranked ahead of us. IMO they should be #1 at this point.
Nevertheless, I don’t think PK is making a ridiculous point ranking the Packer #1. They have the top scoring D in the NFL, a star QB and an explosive offense. They lead the league by a wide margin in Net point differential. They lost two games in OT by a FG and then another at Chicago by a FG in which they dominated the Bears but committed 18 penalties and yet barely lost. They’ve also won at Philly and at NY Jets.
But really all this means nothing. We’ll know who is better come Sunday afternoon…

Sorry guys. The Packers have suffered more injuries to key players than any team in the league, and yet they are 7-3 with 2 overtime losses in games where they suffered most of these injuries. Many players are rejoining the roster and they are getting better every week. They not just beat 2 spiraling teams, they pounded them and sent the coach packing. If you watched those games, they could have easily scored 50 in both. Mike McCarthy is famous for taking the air out of the ball with a lead. Rodgers barely played in the 4th quarter against the Vikings. Our d-backs can’t handle their receivers, and most importantly we don’t match well on the lines. Sorry. Packers 31-17. We just aren’t there yet.

Reality check:
1. Oddsmakers set the betting line to make money for the books. It is a business and they do not make decisions based upon emotions as fans may do. Sports books are out to make a profit. Historically, the Packers attract more money at the sports books because they have a very wide and loyal fan base, even at the betting windows. So, the oddsmakers tend to weigh in favor of the Packers opponents in order to influence the betting line to their advantage.
2. The Packers comfortably beat the Eagles earlier this season. In Philadelphia.
3. There’s a lot of season still left to be played after Sunday. Don’t pin your hopes for the team’s future on one regular season game. Regardless of the outcome, the losing team could advance deep into the playoffs and still win it all. It does not matter who the best team is after week 12, only after the final game of the playoffs. Otherwise, you may as well throw in the towel should the game be lost. Keep it in perspective.
4. Respect your foe. This is a well-coached, deeply talented team that has put 6 starters on IR since the beginning of the season. Yet, they still have managed to establish the best point differential of any NFL team (points scored vs. points scored by their opponents). They make absolutely no excuses nor have they let their bad luck with injuries get them down.

Honestly, the Falcons are playing very well but haven’t exactly dominated a quality team for an entire game. Still, with a few more lucky breaks and innovative schemes, we have as good a chance as anyone; just not the flashy star power mega egos of the Northeastern teams that attrack the gambling media gurus.

I live in Italy, but i follow football since 1987, and i’ve always been a Falcons fan.
First and foremost: is a rarity to see the Falcons that high on Power Rankings. If you remember, either in 1998 we flied under the radar and then we went to the Superbowl. So i prefer not to be in the first place today only to crumble at the and of the season…
second: i don’t understand sometimes the logics of Power Rankings: i mean, football is not math. I don’t think that if Packers beat the eagles and the eagles beat the falcons, than the Packers are better than the falcons.
This is ridiculous. The NFL is becoming a league in which no one have a default win or loss, whoever is the upcoming foe.
You can see the Patriots lose to Cleveland and then win big vs Pittsburgh and Indianapolis.
So i think that when you’re thinking about to create a power ranking all you have to think about is who is the better NOW.
Don’t waste your time thinking about what happened six or seven weeks ago, because all the teams right now are very different compared on who they were at the beginning of the season.
You have to analyze who is in better shape and who has gained the most now.
so, i think we’re not the best team in the league (to me New england is the best right now) but cetainly we are the team to beat in the NFC right now.
In any case, i leave all those analysts say what they want any given tuesday, all i care about is where we will be in late January…
Go Falcons and greetings from Italy.
P.S. For all of you that don’t know, the NFL is very popular here, but it’s hard to find many falcons fan…

Can the Falcons defeat Packers? Yes. Will they? I dunno. Several things will have to happen. Grimes will have to either have an early interception or turn in the performance of his career. The Falcon secondary will have to shut off yards after catch. At least two takeaways need to go way of home team. Falcons must play turnover free. Matt Ryan must not misfire when receivers are open. Falcons cannot drop catchable passes. Punter must have above average effort. No missed field goals. Focus on TDs not FGs in red zone. Creative play calling. Long list but these are Packers not Arizona Cardinals. Wish Falcons well. STENDEK

First, the Falcons should be ranked higher than Packers, second, these “rankings” are based on person opinions and mean diddly.
I’d like to see how good Atlanta would have been in the first 6 games had they lost Gonzalez, Turner, two starting LBs, the starting RT and starting safety to IR. The Packers did just that and still only lost those 3 games all by 3 points. I pretty much guarantee the Packers win at Washington and Miami if Clay Matthews had played whole games.
Tampa Bay’s opponents in their wins are like 12-30, not quite a strong team. Yes they beat Baltimore last second and the Saints in OT but beat up on such powerhouses such as Cleveland, Arizona, St Louis (4-5 give me a break they suck) Cincy and SF. Sure the Vikings and Cowboys weren’t performing well, but they were still very talented (both picked to be SB bound by some) and they ANNIHILATED THEM by a combined score of 76-10.
Atlanta beat up on Cincy and SF (two underaceivers) by a combined score of 55-46 for comparison.
Both teams are good, you all know that, why give a rats — what Peter King thinks?

Partly b/c of the Birds’s inablility to put teams away, I guess, everybody thinks the Falcons have been plain lucky – against the league. Nowhere is that vitriol and contempt higher than in NO and Philly. To Philly, we suck. To NO, we are frauds.
GB is a confident bunch – especially having a pass-only attack. It’s strange. Well, at least there’s no Samkan Gado to sneak up on us in the running attack. But they will try to knock us out early with their shock and awe aerial game.
Hope we have a game plan that keeps ‘em off the field. But their defense is serious, too, so Ryan will have to have a Brady-like game that gets absolutely everybody – (hear that Harry Douglas?) involved. We’ll find out if Ryan and these Birds are for real. The whole NFL cognoscenti will be watching.

wow, stumbled on this hub of 21st Century journalism, man what a pointless article. You can argue it any way you want, fact is atlanta doesn’t get any credit, cause they haven’t done anything, and they don’t have any dominating players. and thats about it. yes they have an 8-2 record and beat plenty of good teams, and yes they are balanced. but other than that, if there were a team that would possibly just fizzle out, its them. They get gashed by the pass, lack consistency on the defensive side, and let teams hang around that they should put away. they are not proven playoff winners nor do they have a proven playoff coach or system in place, IE , the eagles, even though they choke regularly in the playoffs, the steelers, saints, etc. So until then, they won’t get any credit and you should not be complaining about that, mark bradley, or even trying to point it out, how bout go out there keep winning and write about why they can’t stop the pass, and let QB’s have career days against them.

and btw, i think the falcons are a joke. 8-2? what does that mean, nothing, see you in the playoffs, when you get coached out of the building. just shows you guys are all noobs, so used to losing, you get one 8-2 mark and you expect everyone to stop what they are doing and give you a pat on the back, thanks, keep expecting that and see how many more steps you take going forward while your standing there with your lolly pop. jags

1st thank you Mark, 2nd to the guy that thinks Vick was disrespected, .. uh no he disrespected the team and the fan in Atl, but he paid his debt and I’m happy for him, he has grown into the top shelf caliber QB that we through we drafted. Now as for the Falcons getting no respect I’m with Dan and BC let them fly under the radar, we know this team is good. It’s like Auburn, all week long nobody gave them a chance to win against Bama, everybody was already asking if Auburn could climb back in after a lost to Bama, and would Bama get a good Bowl game with 2 losses. All Auburn did was keep playing, and that’s all this team does … they don’t quit. They went toe to toe with the Steelers in Pittsburgh, and minus 1 defensive slip we would be 9-1 I am damn proud this team Smith has done a great job and I look forward to them improvign all year long Go Falcons and WAR DAMN EAGLE

Either the players are good and the Falcons have “underachieved” at 8-2, or the players are average and it’s been a heckuva coaching job so far this year. The Steelers game we let get away. We gave them too much respect in their bldg. We’re a much more confident group, I believe. Replay that game even at Heinz Field and I think we win it. Replay Philly and I think we win it. I know we can beat the Iggles. Respect tho, they peeped our playbook that whole game. But replay the NO, TB, SF, CINCY, CLE, and BALT games and we beat ‘em even worse than we did – no doubt about it.

I like the article. However, Philly kicked our butts after we let it be known that we had them circled after they ran up the score with Mike Vick last year. If we handle Been Gay I will get my heart in it.

Falcons need to upgrade their running game, then the respect will come. Turner is good, but not a difference maker.

Who cares about ESPN ranking other than Bradley?
Keeping under the radar is good thing, let us win games on the field and keep ourselves out of the press.
Bradley, you may care about ranking, us fans, only care about winning.
Go FALCONS.

Falcons have always stunk and a few close wins and referee help in no way makes them anything other than a team whose owner bought them some wins. yeah , it must be really great to be the fan of the team who tries to buy respect. Why not prove what you say you are and win a decisive game with no ref help at the end …..LOSERS!!!

Howdy Mark. Fantastic victory! Believe Falcons escaped after extreme error in judgment. Fourth down called for pressure. Why? A great QB will find open receiver if provided enough time. Packer QB did! Previous pressure forced rushed QB throws. One on fourth down which just missed for major gain stands out. Falcons should have brought heat to force quick decision. Anything short of end zone, with tackle of course, meant almost certain victory. Will say Falcons of old would have lost this one. Not these guys! Fab time to be Falcon watcher. Soar even higher birds! STENDEK

threeWINNINGseasonsINaROW!!!: Since the Falcons are 9-2 this means that they have already achieved a third winning season in a row (Not withstanding Bradley’s error reporting a record of 8-2)

Arty Blank seems to have bought another one. The falcons are going to make him go broke if they can’t win one honestly.

Do You have any Idea what you speak of Iron?? what do you mean Bought another one? and what referee help could you possibly be speaking of? there were bad calls on both side, somebody mentioned 4th and 3? and that we did not get it? sorry but your mistaken, but the ref’s did assist the pack on the late TD, as if you followed the ball all the way through the catch you’ll see he was bobbling the ball. That said those are part of the game and you have to take the bad and continue to play, the Falcons did the Pack did not, so we won the game, the Pack did not, we’re 9-2 and they are 7-4. so No the Falcons will not be tied with the Saints on SUn and no they will not fall into a tie with them. we go to Tampa this weekend, I feel pretty good about that one, then we go to carolina and then to Seattle (at which I will be present) and then home to face the Saints. the worse I can see the Falcons right now is 11-3 going into the saints game, If the Saints win all there games then they will be tied with the Falcons, anyway good luck, cause I figuring no worse than 13-3 this year!! Go Falcons

atlppal…you are a sad, strange, little man. Why would you troll articles about the Falcons, just so you can make bizarre, unfounded and irrational proclamations about a team you obviously dislike? Does it somehow bolster your ever-diminishing sense of manhood to make fun of somebody else’s opinion just because it differs from your own?
