Live from Georgia Tech, where there’s a *BCS berth at stake

Yes, this post is about Tech. But here's a look at the 2009 Independence Bowl. (AP photo)

Yes, this post is about Tech. But here's a look at the 2009 Independence Bowl. (AP photo)

(*In this case, “BCS” stands for “bowl of cruddy stature.”)

Georgia Tech is 5-5. It needs to beat Duke, which is terrible, to become bowl-eligible. If the Jackets lose here today, they’ll need to beat Georgia, which is the best sub-.500 team in the country, in Athens next week to secure a postseason invitation. And where might Tech go if it notches Victory No. 6?

ESPN.com has Tech ticketed for the Military Bowl, which will be staged in Washington D.C. on Dec. 29. Scout.com, SI.com and CBSsports.com all have the Jackets headed to the one place guaranteed to slash Tech fans’ arsenal of ever-ready UGA insults by 67 percent — the Advocare  V100 Independence Bowl, which is staged you-know-where.

For 51 weeks Georgia fans have gigged Tech with these four words: “We run this state.” For 51 weeks Tech backers have responded with one word: “Shreveport.” And — wouldn’t you know it? — the Jackets could well be bound for that charming city to play a bowl game on Dec. 27. Yikes.

That said, the only thing worse than going to Shreveport is not being eligible to go to Shreveport. Tech could and should take care of that today. (Did I mention that Duke is terrible?) Even without its best player, the Jackets are 10-point favorites. Should his Jackets somehow mess up and get beat, I fully expect Paul Johnson to punch someone, even if it’s only himself, in the face.

And with that, the floor is again open for questions, comments and testimonials from the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. And it must be stated that at least one outsider attaches great value to an Independence Bowl bid. I remind you that A.J. Green got $1,000 for his jersey from the 2009 installment of that epic event.

You assume we don’t beat UGA as well. IF we win both, we could very well end up with a berth to the Music City, or somethign along those lines. Either way, it is better than not being Bowl Eligable, and that might be where UGA is heading, so I’ll take our position right now to control our destiny in that matter. Jackets cover today easily.

I was listening to Buck Belue’s College football today show this morning and Chip Towers said Coaches in the SEC don’t have to come into Georgia and negatively recruit or even recruit that hard against Georgia because of all the talk out there that is perpetuated over the last several years from Mark Bradley and Jeff Shultz. Even the announcement of playing BSU in the kickoff classic brings a headline that says this isn’t good for CMR. Isn’t it wonderful how the state paper recruits against UGA?

Tech needs the win (or next week at UGA) to get the extra bowl game practice. As stated, 84 of the roster are Freshman, Sophmores or RS Fr/So. The extra couple of weeks of practice would are needed for the team to work on maturing the line, working with Tevin/Sims/Days, gets more young players quality time and also I want to see Joshua getting one more time to dress for the White & Gold.

MB, How come there is absolutely ZERO coverage in the AJC of Morehouse College in the D-II playoffs. First time ever, and the hometown paper has more print about Boise State than an institution in the city limits of Atlanta (Something the AJC can’t even say). They have a better record than Tech or Georgia. What’s up with that?

You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.

So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

Some think Tech needs to win today… but that isn’t going to accomplish anything. I’m a Tech fan, but feel they NEED to lose today. The Braves got to the post-season because of some amazing games that required late-inning heroics that in no way reflected the actual capabilities of the team. They should never have made the post-season.

Tech’s season does not support them going to a bowl game. A loss today would be in keeping with the character of this year’s team. Sorry Tech, but you’ve got to swallow your bitter pill and think about adjustments for next year.

Also Duke grads are smarter than “nerds” AND Duke is beating teck at its own game!!!!

re: extra game (i.e., low rent bowl game) being good for the program, i’d have to disagree. Tech is weak this year — across the board. What is good about a 6-6 team, IF we beat Duke — which is very iffy — going to some godforsaken place with bad weather and minimal fans along to most likely lose yet another game. All this, after getting blown out by an average UGA team. Just stay home; this team is too inconsistent and mistake prone to go anywhere but home after Thanskgiving.

Again, I want to see tech win this one! CPJ is a second half coach so I would not be too worried if I were a tech fan. They’ll pull away in the 2nd half. I enjoy watching this Tevin kid. UGA Grad with son at Tech

November 20th, 2010
2:29 pm

Hey Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Well you got the “zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz” part right…as in “snoozzzze” thru your repeated copy & paste (as Glory Glory points out) nonsense. The only thing missing was the Tech fan mantra that only Tech fans seem to repeat – “There’s a reason UGA is known as the Cesspool of the South”….there are one or two Tech posters on all these boards that love to throw that one out, though that phrase is never uttered anywhere else.

Buy a clue – most of the people who post on these boards are not UGA grads, they are simply fans of the biggest football school in their area. Especially those who constantly insult other teams fans. Your misguided rant about UGA degrees being easy to obtain and worthless in the job market also make you look just as (if not more) petty and small minded than the people you think you are targeting with your comments.

I hope Tech wins today and loses to UGA next week so we both get to go to some type of bowl game. True Tech and UGA GRADS (not the intended stressing of the GRADS) participate in a very friendly rivalry while working next to one another every day.

Don’t bother flaming me back, it won’t be seen or responded to by me. I was enjoying reading a few comments but now have better things to do. My BS in Comp Sci from UGA may be worthless in your eyes, but the software consulting business I own has a few things going on today that require attention. I guess it’s a good thing for my employees that your opinion of my degree doesn’t affect their salary being paid. My business partner (a Tech grad) will keep me updated on the Tech game.

Seems as though a .416 winning percentage over a full season equivalent would bring about some hard questions being asked of this staff??? If they do not get this thing turned around today and it goes south next week, they are staring down the barrel of .357 winnging percentage (pardon the pun) over the past 14 games. OUCH!!!

After Va. Tech, it’s like Tech doesn’t have anything to play for. I know the DC was fired last year, because CPJ thought a National Title was possible this year. And this isn’t all on Groh, I think he’ll be fine into the future, beginning, next season. This is the Offense. 6 pts. and 130 yards or so in the half, versus Duke?

Maybe it has something to do with Duke having already faced the offense by playing Navy. I know Tech misses Nesbitt as well. What a great player. Hope he gets a shot in the NFL.

Tech seems unforcused – no Orange Bowl, no BCS, no ACC title – it seems like their just mailing in their chips. Wonder what CPJ will do at the Half? And how will he get them motivated for UGA? Just sayin’…

P.S. Looking at Duke’s depth chart, I say Cutcliffe is doing a very good job building a program. Duke is only going to be much better next season, and probably the year after that also – things are finally looking up for Duke!

Hey D Rad. You wanna give PJ another extension?
This offense isn’t going to work. When you are getting smoked by Duke, it’s time to rethink things.
And PJ, you said good teams don’t lose twice in a row. How about FIVE losses in a row?
That’s where you’re headed. Nice call on 4th down again. How many games will your playing calling lose? Your recruits are already bad enough.

Butts Wagner

These are Paul’s recruits.

About half of the players are Paul’s recruits. The 2008 class is mostly guys who were recruited by Gailey. 10 of the players committed after PJ was hired. 5 are players on offense, which is to say CPJ guys. I’m going to hold off on ripping PJ’s recruiting for another two years when the team will truly be 100% composed of his players, including upperclassmen.

CPJ really is a great coach. But he had some great players left over from Gailey on Offense and Defense. We’ll see how he recruits. And also, this is Tech’s 3rd time thru the League with CPJ’s offense. Maybe the League is learning it a little. Who do we have with Allen leaving for next season? And can Stephen Hill catch a pass? Those are the 2 most crucial questions for next season. I think Groh will be fine. Tech has been recruiting some great Defense talent, and I think that will begin to blossom next season.

It’s hard not too. I so long for more Tech fans who can be better stronger fans of Tech and less the “anti-Georgia” fan. Fans who love Tech to the point that they really don’t care what Georgia did on any given Saturday, who they played, if they won, or what their fans say. Tech doesn’t have many of us, and for us the inferiority complex that leads to the “anti-Georgia” mentality is quite embarassing. But you know, perceptually it’s a free country so post away.

I don’t think most UGA fans “hate” TECH or ever have, at least in my fairly long life. However, even a lot of reasonably sane and balanced UGA fans have a difficult time with the incredible tenor of infantile posts from a considerable number of TECH fans. UGA certainly has its share of idiot fans, but good grief, TECH lowers the bar. I find this a bit ironic. So Jesse, Saint S, et al., know we think you are pathetic. Sane TECH people think you are pathetic. You are the epitome of what you seem to think UGA represents.

Why wiuld Georgia fans hate Tech? There aren’t many big brothers who have inferiority complexes when it comes to their little brother but it is definitely prominent the other way around. Tech is Georgia’s little brother and has been for 44 years. And will continue to be for the unforseen future for reasons only the school’s administration and Tech alums must address themselves when they’re ready to….if they ever are. Until that day you’ll just have to keep hearing from some of them about how superior Tech people are in the workplace….when discussin college football.

it was originally called the Dixie Redcoat Marching Band

Dixie was removed due to its potentially offense connotation

Marching was removed because it could be construed with draft dodgers marching on campus
and Band was all that was left.

1 – There are MANY MANY Georgia fans who need to have some thicker skin…..and most of them DID NOT attend Georgia

Once was a thought inside my head
‘Fore I reached thirty, I’d be dead
But somehow on and on I go
I keep on rollin’ with the flow

Folks said that I would change my mind
I’d straighten up and do just fine
Ah, but somehow on and on I go
I keep on rollin’ with the flow
(Keep on rollin’ with flow)

While guys my age are raising kids
I’m raising hell just like I did
I’ve got a lot of crazy friends
And One forgives me of my sins

Some might be callin’ me a bum
But I’m still out here havin’ fun
And Jesus loves me, yes, I know
So I keep on rollin’ with the flow
(Keep on rollin’ with the flow)

While guys my age are raising kids
I’m raising hell just like I did
I’ve got a lot of crazy friends
And One forgives me of my sins

Can’t take it with you when you’re gone
But I want enough to get there on
And I ain’t never growin’ old
So I keep on rollin’ with the flow
(Keep on rolling with the flow)

No I ain’t never growin’ old
If I keep on rollin’ with the flow
(Keep on rollin’ with the flow)
Keep on rollin’ with the flow

Well, I would have been very pleased if either of my older children had gone to TECH because I think it is a wonderful education. TECH is what it is, and I just don’t see how they are ever going to consistently compete in football with larger SEC schools with more diverse academic curriculum. Does anyone think Duke or Wake Forest alumni really care about their football results? Yeah, I know Duke and Carolina have a huge b’ball rivalry, but that is a different sport and much easier to find 5-6 outstanding players that can read and write (and one would think could even pass calculus :) .

College has been dumbed down so much it is sad. It is refreshing there are schools that still have some semblance of academic rigor. Just listen to most of these guys speak. It is pathetic.

to attend or be an alumnus of the school to be a supporter. Football is a game not an exercise

gtne80

Facts:
UGA should be anywhere from a 10 to 17 point favorite when Vegas posts the initial line for COFH.
Tech is bowl eligible, even if it is for a “bowl of cruddy stature.”
UGA is currently not bowl eligible for any bowl.
Even if Murray is not 100 percent or goes down on the first play of the game, UGA should be able to win by just handing off and gashing our defense up the middle. If he can throw the ball AT ALL, he should be able to find AJ roaming free in our flacid secondary.
Groh’s defense will make Bobo look like an offensive genius.
All the pressure next week is on UGA. No one expects Tech to compete in Athens with a 2nd string QB.
The heat is on Richt, not Johnson.

He’s not under any heat from me or any Tech fan, it’s the UGA fans and the AJC writers that have pointed out time and time again that CMR’s teams have failed to live up to their full potential. Add all of the off the field issues, and there are a number (if not a majority) of unhappy folks. If UGA slips up next week (and I’m not saying that they will – read my earlier post) against another outmanned underdog and fails to make a bowl game, you don’t think there will be some folks calling for his head?

All problems belong to someone other than the head man.

Tech had to scramble to beat a sorry Duke team. Georgia will mash Tech next week and Johnson will say “Beating Georgia does not define our season!”

He sounds so much like a deflecting Hewitt on why Tech BB sucks, good for Hewitt that he has a better deal than Johnson, at least we can get rid of PJ in a few years once we reach absolute bottom with his weak recruiting classes. Delbert, With Johnson coaching a bowl game practice time does no good. He blames everyone but himself for the miserable performance this year. Teams now know how to stop this offense and he dose nothing to adjust. Changing a formation but doing the same thing over and over does not work. He is arrogant and thinks no ne can stop his terrific offense. Look at the results this year.

Beat SC State wow
Beat Middle Tenn double wow
Beat UNC, by the way 11 players suspended for that game triple wow
Beat Virginia, they actually suck more than we do!
Beat Weak Forest, Stanford hung 63 on them and we have to win at the very end
Beat a sorry Duke team that we made look like Alabama

Players don’t execute according to PJ, guess coaches are not responsible for teaching them how to execute!

It is always someones else to blame, not the head man. I guess when Georgia mashes us next week Johnson will say ” The Georgia game does not define our season!” Enough said.

Mike T – The quote was “We want to get the program to the point where beating UGA does not define our season.” I know what he was trying to say. If Tech built a consistent program that won year in and year out and competed for the ACC Championship each year, the importance of the UGA game would decline. However, speaking as a lifelong Tech fan and a Tech grad, I can tell you that the UGA will ALWAYS go a long way toward defining Tech’s season as far as I’m concerned. Go Tech, Season ticket holder for 20 years. I pull for Tech and anyone that plays Georgia. The truth hurts and you denie the truth. Remeber me when Johnson is fired. I want Tech to win every game, when the head coachh states “The Georgia game does not define our season!” I then know he has no clue:

I’m a ramblinwreck from Georgia Tech and a hell’uv an engineer,
I’m a hell’uv , hell’uv , hell’uv an engineer.
And like the Jolley good fellows I like my whiskey clear!
I’m a ramblinwreck from Georgia Tech and a hell’uv an engineer.

Oh, if I had a daughter sir, I’d dress her in white and gold,
And put her on the campus to cheer for the brave and bold

Butif I had a son, I ‘d tell you what he would do:
He would yell to hell with Georgia, like his daddy used to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Go tech, don’t question my alliance for Georgia Tech I just tell the truth, if you can’t handle it then you need to grow up!!!
