Live from Georgia Tech, where there’s a *BCS berth at stake

Yes, this post is about Tech. But here's a look at the 2009 Independence Bowl. (AP photo)

(*In this case, “BCS” stands for “bowl of cruddy stature.”)

Georgia Tech is 5-5. It needs to beat Duke, which is terrible, to become bowl-eligible. If the Jackets lose here today, they’ll need to beat Georgia, which is the best sub-.500 team in the country, in Athens next week to secure a postseason invitation. And where might Tech go if it notches Victory No. 6?

ESPN.com has Tech ticketed for the Military Bowl, which will be staged in Washington D.C. on Dec. 29. Scout.com, SI.com and CBSsports.com all have the Jackets headed to the one place guaranteed to slash Tech fans’ arsenal of ever-ready UGA insults by 67 percent — the Advocare  V100 Independence Bowl, which is staged you-know-where.

For 51 weeks Georgia fans have gigged Tech with these four words: “We run this state.” For 51 weeks Tech backers have responded with one word: “Shreveport.” And — wouldn’t you know it? — the Jackets could well be bound for that charming city to play a bowl game on Dec. 27. Yikes.

That said, the only thing worse than going to Shreveport is not being eligible to go to Shreveport. Tech could and should take care of that today. (Did I mention that Duke is terrible?) Even without its best player, the Jackets are 10-point favorites. Should his Jackets somehow mess up and get beat, I fully expect Paul Johnson to punch someone, even if it’s only himself, in the face.

And with that, the floor is again open for questions, comments and testimonials from the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. And it must be stated that at least one outsider attaches great value to an Independence Bowl bid. I remind you that A.J. Green got $1,000 for his jersey from the 2009 installment of that epic event.

Burdell- you said Duke was beating Tech at their own game. I said what game is that, because Tech is leading. If there was enough of an audience to warrant coverage, it would be covered. What is their attendance?

I believe the Texas Tech receivers also got a lot more work during games than the Georgia Tech wideouts do, mmgtfan. Just sayin’.

UGA’s run defense is pretty good. And we will have had 2 weeks to prepare for the option. Do you think without a doubt the ENTIRE UGA team is not in a confernce room watching this game together, breaking it down as it happens??

At the risk of being accused of hurting anyone’s recruiting, I must confess that this is a pretty lousy game.

Hey Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Well you got the “zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz” part right…as in “snoozzzze” thru your repeated copy & paste (as Glory Glory points out) nonsense. The only thing missing was the Tech fan mantra that only Tech fans seem to repeat – “There’s a reason UGA is known as the Cesspool of the South”….there are one or two Tech posters on all these boards that love to throw that one out, though that phrase is never uttered anywhere else.

Buy a clue – most of the people who post on these boards are not UGA grads, they are simply fans of the biggest football school in their area. Especially those who constantly insult other teams fans. Your misguided rant about UGA degrees being easy to obtain and worthless in the job market also make you look just as (if not more) petty and small minded than the people you think you are targeting with your comments.

I hope Tech wins today and loses to UGA next week so we both get to go to some type of bowl game. True Tech and UGA GRADS (not the intended stressing of the GRADS) participate in a very friendly rivalry while working next to one another every day.

Don’t bother flaming me back, it won’t be seen or responded to by me. I was enjoying reading a few comments but now have better things to do. My BS in Comp Sci from UGA may be worthless in your eyes, but the software consulting business I own has a few things going on today that require attention. I guess it’s a good thing for my employees that your opinion of my degree doesn’t affect their salary being paid. My business partner (a Tech grad) will keep me updated on the Tech game.

Will Richt get mid evil and try to score 60 to 70 points on GT? I have the impression Paul Johnson’s smug nature sticks in CMR craw.

duh. another clueless play by GT. The punter took his time on previous punt, looked downfield and then punted. All GT players were on one side of field. GT needs to recruit guys that are just a little smarter. GT WILL lose this game …..and vs UGA,

MB, have you ever done a column focusing on the irritating non-tackling that comes as a result of guys flying through the air and missing, or moving at full speed and being juked by the ball carrier, leaving themselves absolutely no ability to make an adjustment to maintain the tackle? Or is it that not much is expected of college players in this regard so it’s not worth discussing?
