Live from Georgia Tech, where there’s a *BCS berth at stake

(*In this case, “BCS” stands for “bowl of cruddy stature.”)

Georgia Tech is 5-5. It needs to beat Duke, which is terrible, to become bowl-eligible. If the Jackets lose here today, they’ll need to beat Georgia, which is the best sub-.500 team in the country, in Athens next week to secure a postseason invitation. And where might Tech go if it notches Victory No. 6?

ESPN.com has Tech ticketed for the Military Bowl, which will be staged in Washington D.C. on Dec. 29. Scout.com, SI.com and CBSsports.com all have the Jackets headed to the one place guaranteed to slash Tech fans’ arsenal of ever-ready UGA insults by 67 percent — the Advocare  V100 Independence Bowl, which is staged you-know-where.

For 51 weeks Georgia fans have gigged Tech with these four words: “We run this state.” For 51 weeks Tech backers have responded with one word: “Shreveport.” And — wouldn’t you know it? — the Jackets could well be bound for that charming city to play a bowl game on Dec. 27. Yikes.

That said, the only thing worse than going to Shreveport is not being eligible to go to Shreveport. Tech could and should take care of that today. (Did I mention that Duke is terrible?) Even without its best player, the Jackets are 10-point favorites. Should his Jackets somehow mess up and get beat, I fully expect Paul Johnson to punch someone, even if it’s only himself, in the face.

And with that, the floor is again open for questions, comments and testimonials from the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. And it must be stated that at least one outsider attaches great value to an Independence Bowl bid. I remind you that A.J. Green got $1,000 for his jersey from the 2009 installment of that epic event.

Wild play. Duke fumbled the kickoff at the 14, recovered it in the end zone — and gets a touchback. Not a safety.

In sum, Duke gained six yards and lost no points by fumbling. Not sure that’s fair.

I confess: I thought it was either a Duke safety or a Tech touchdown. Obviously I don’t know the rules. I probably should.

Mark, I’m wondering if the NCAA will adjust that penalty on Pearl- all he did was break the rules on recruiting both in his home and telephone, LIE about it thereafter, and then have an epiphany and confess his sins AFTER being caught. Suspension for the whole season seems about right to me.

No.

Mark Bradley (and Jeff Schultz) are like playground bullies. He knows the best way to get blog hits (when not a live situation like this) is to tick off the largest and most passionate fanbase possible…UGA.

He knows it, we know it. But he will never admit it. I find it sad when a man’s career has come to such antics.

It’s actually the SEC that suspended Pearl, Nurse Ratchet. And this Pearl situation isn’t nearly over.

Georgia will be better than Tech next year. Then again, I thought Georgia would be 9-3 this year, Steve. (It’s misplaced optimism like that that is killing Georgia’s recruiting. Ho, ho.)

I thought the Institution announces their self imposed penalties and then the SEC or NCAA review and either agree to or adjust the penalties.

Glory, Mark is one of the most respect reporter in the South. He has always been fair and balanced. Even when he writes something I don’t like are agree with he always lets you voice your opinion. Sometimes the truth hurts but Marks job is to report it. I also know he is a man of high moral character and a family man..If you don’t agree ok but remember what goes around comes around.

You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.

So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

You have a terrible team, you lose to UGA every year, you have a terrible campus with crime everywhere, you have a high school stadium, you have terrible tailgating, you have ZERO attractive women, you have lost like 5 bowl games in a row. Must suck.” not to mention brosef…. GT lost 80-63 to Kennesaw State in BASKETBALL lmfao a brand new D1 and they lost by 17 haha
