The Cam Newton saga set to music: ‘Son of a Preacher Man’

Kudos to the fine folks at EDSBS and the Orlando Sentinel for unearthing this musical nugget, which we at AJC.com feel duty-bound to pass along to you, dear surfers. There’s no new information regarding Cam Newton relayed herein, but it is, you’ll have to admit, pretty darn amusing.

The talented artist’s name — not his given name, we assume — is MoonPie. (We can also assume this isn’t the Mike “Moonpie” Wilson who played offensive line at Georgia back in the ’70s alongside Cowboy Joel Parrish.) I have e-mailed the song stylist requesting further information about him (and also his rather astonishing hat), and I will break into regularly scheduled programming to update y’all if/when Mr. Pie responds.

UPDATE: MoonPie responds!

Mr. Bradley,
Thanks for your e-mail.
I would love to play in the Atlanta area.
I am a musician, but more of a singer/frontman.
I have an act called Kenny LoveChild & the Party (you can YouTube that as well) which is more professional and much less comic.  If you have any contacts, let me know.
I am a GAMECOCK.  But I just love college football.
Honestly the hat came off the “closeout” rack at the local Family Dollar several years ago.

I’m sure you’ve heard the Dusty Springfield song “Son of a Preacher Man” a zillion times, and if you’re as cool as Dave O’Brien you doubtless have the LP from which it sprang on 180-gram vinyl. If you don’t, I’d urge you to click over to iTunes and download “Dusty in Memphis” now. It’s a classic. (As was Dusty’s 1987 re-emergence on the  Pet Shop Boys song, “What I Have Done to Deserve This?,” which can be found on the likewise tremendous PSB long player “Actually.”)

And it probably should come as no surprise that a sporting tribute (of sorts) would have an Auburn connection. As we know, the famous Mark Teixeira song of summer 2007 was the fabulous work of two AU students who called themselves “Tito and the Gun Show.” Forced to make a value judgment, I’m not sure the updated “Son of the Preacher Man” contains anything quite so memorable as “If I were a woman I’d prob’ly marry ya” from the Teixeira magnum opus, but the line about Danny Ford is in, as we say, the ballpark.

But enough. Here, courtesy of YouTube, you go:

UGA fans…the Auburn game is a week old. You need to move on and concentrate on GT…and on avoiding a 5-7 season.

Forget about Fairley…the SEC reviewed the tape and decided not to do anything about it. The Newtwon thing?…it will work itself out.

It seems like UGA fans want or NEED Newton to be guilty. Will it make you feel better if he is? Will you feel better about losing to Auburn if it’s true? Will it help you sleep better at night?

I’m telling you guys…move on before you move backward.

Mark and fellow UGA fans, just out of curiousity, why do you hate Cam Newton so much?

After all, it’s not his fault he is not at Georgia, we wanted him to be a tight end. Is it because he went to rivals? If so, why the hate?

Just curious.

As a true SEC guy first, I personally would love to see every school in the conference NCAA Probation/Allegation/Inquiry Free. Is that going to happen in my lifetime? Doubt it. But it is wishful thinking. First as a southern I am proud of the way football is played in the south at every school in the south and every conference at every division and level played in the south. Am I proud of the way things have been going with all the agent gate, jersey gate, agents and runners and other boosters have taken over our beloved game? No, It is embarrassing to every person involved or a fan of college athletics.

This booster deal, and money changing hands is nothing new in collegiate sports. This behavior and activity has long been part of our culture. This way of doing business is new to college sports however. This all started many years ago in College Basketball and grew and grew and grew. Now those same practices that worked so well for these so called agents in basketball has grown to epedemic proportions in football. The way money is exchanged is become a new form of sport. Just when a school gets a grip on rogue boosters or supporters a new method is created to get the money to the athlete or the family.

Now onto the Cecil Newton, Cameron Newton, Kenny Rogers, Auburn, Mississippi State fiasco. The odd truth is that money was requested and through various media sources whether true or not it has become common knowledge that the JC Quarterback was being shopped. Who was shopping him is in doubt, but from all the reporting it is safe to bet that Kenny Rogers and Cecil Newton were behind the price fixing. Did Cameron Newton know what was going on? Who knows? If you are a realist then it is safe to bet that common sense says Cameron Newton was aware he was being shopped. There have been too many conversations with some fellow players at JC where Newton told other players he was going to sign with MSU. He visits MSU and Ole Miss Egg Bowl game where MSU beats a pretty good Ole Miss squad and Cameron Newton states once again he was going to sign with Dan Mullin and MSU. Too many things happened between that November Football game in Starkville and National Signing Day. What? The FBI and NCAA are going to find out.

Onto the Auburn deal with boosters, whether you like it or not, the FBI is involved and that changed the way EVERYONE started answering questions and telling half truths to full truths. The FBI has something the NCAA does not have, the power to charge someone with lying and putting people in jail with due cause. Mr. McGregor’s Attorney did what any good attorney does, he defends his client in the press and states his client is innocent of all allegations( note the same attorney said the same thing after Mr. McGregor was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury in October) and will be vindicated. That is why he is paid the big bucks to defend his client. The only problem with this scenario is that people seem to talking and talking alot to the the feds. As anyone knows the first ones to talk get the best deals. It happened at Alabama with Logan Young and it will happen again with this case. Is it provable? Only time will tell.

Onto Mississippi State, even though they turned in to the SEC their notes, they made one very bad mistake. they kept recruiting a player who was represented by someone and or a parent who requested money and benefits and did not immediately report their conversations to the SEC and NCAA. Mike Slive is a former judge and he wants facts and facts only. For those who say he is protecting Auburn and Cameron Newton, think again, he will not unfairly punish a school or a kid without proof and facts. Mississippi State is not going to come out of this free and clear. MSU will be given some form of punishment and those involved and interviewed by the FBI unless given immunity will be dealt with by the NCAA and or FBI for anything improper.

I would love for an SEC team to win the BCS title for 5 years in a row, and our only hope this year is Auburn unless LSU were to get another fluke shot with multiple schools losing to some very weak opponents in the next 3 weeks, and that is not going to happen. Auburn deserves a fail shake in all this but from every other case where the FBI is involved there always seems to be a stray bullet that hits someone and in this case it may be multiple SEC schools and athletes.

Forget It

November 18th, 2010

UGA fans…it’s been a week…forget about Auburn and move on.

I’m not saying Auburn is innocent. Newton may be guilty and Fairley cheap-shoted Murray. However, concentrate on Tech and getting to 6-6.

Hoping that Auburn/Newton are guilty won’t help the SEC…or UGA…it won’t erase the loss. It almost appears that you want…strike that…NEED Auburn to be guilty so that you can have a reason for the loss.

uga2002

November 18th, 2010

SEC, I agree with some of your post but not all because you make the one mistake of accepting that Newton’s father asked for money when there is no proof of that.

However, as for State, I don’t see how anyone can say with a straight face they are clear because they acted properly. By all accounts they have boosters openly admitting to trying to buy players and a school that either did not turn in said information until after the recruit signed with another school (sour grapes) or they’re simply culpable in the events.

I frankly believe that we will never have anything on Newton Sr. other than Kenny Rogers word which means nada. I believe Rogers offered money and I wouldn’t be surprised if Bond and Bell were among others willing to pay, Newton Sr. balked at his son “being treated like a mule (at MSU)” and the scorned boosters “turned it in” in January. And State spent 6 or 7 months trying to get it to go away despite repeated inquiries by the SEC. Therefore, I do believe that MSU is in trouble because of Mr. Rogers and maybe Mr. Bond and Mr. Bell and whoever else is involved.

I fear, and if you’re really an SEC guy get ready, that the FBI is investigating a lot of stuff here and that a multitude of schools are about to be in trouble. Where that goes, I have no idea but I fear we’re going to all be wishing that none of this had come to see the light of day and we were talking about Newton’s redemption story and not this.

Be careful what you wish for Georgia and Alabama fans and any of the other Newton and Auburn haters. Be careful because boosters are bad news and the bad news is… we all got em’.

Nice Comments, respect them, I will tell you that there is more I will not say, but for sure Cecil Newton is (one of) the culprits and many folks behind the scenes have information to it being fact. There are various forms of recordings, documents, and information that has been relayed to the proper folks in that matter. Do not fall for the Cecil and Cameron Newton as a victim scenario.

But all in all this is going to hit some people and schools that are not even in sight so far in this matter, and do not rule out Lane Kiffin in that also. Grudges run deep and people are telling some tells and in those tells live many truths and facts.

With all of the Dave Kendrix?/AJC manufactured smoke that swirled around UGA back in the Jan Kemp era, there was not one indication of the FBI or even the GBI being remotely interested in that story. That story by the way, centered entirely on a female basketball star that was um, ah, um “involved” with Jan Kemp. Kemp was a special ed teacher for college kids that come from slum backgrounds and needed remedial work. Today, many, many, many universities still offer this dubious curriculum for jocks. At AU, I am sure that 98% of all of the football players are in such a program. Anyway, Kemp tried to blow the whistle on UGA for so called preferential treatment of jocks, because her gal pal flunked out of UGA.Of course, not much came out of it, except that UGA, unlike GT, Duke, Clemson or Florida or UT or 75% of football schools ( not vandy ) got out of the remedial studies prgorams. No one was fired and UGA was on probation maybe for two years and lost possibly 3 or 4 kids over two years with recruiting cut backs.

UGA’a athletic department is fat with cash!!! Money talks and smoke walks. UGA is $$$ flush with cash indicating a very strong program. When we dump CMR, it will be even better. $$$ Kemp did nothing to hurt UGA. Nothing and now? RIP Jan baby. She ain’t here anymore.

With all of the UGA stupidity in the summer of 09 and 2010 with wrecked cars and pinching gals and drunken driving …………not even the GBI was remotely interested. The FBI?? naaaaaaaaaaaah.

At AU the FBI IS interested. Folks ……………ask WHY are they involved. Ask yourself and run some scenarios. Why would the Federal Bureau of Investigation be interested in money chanigng hands down in the lovliest village or in Starkville??? It ain’t because obama wants season tickets to their games.

Follow the money trail to gambling and casinos and dog tracks and ask …………who is ALWAYS INVOLVED in that type of stuff. The MOB.

AU? They and MSU are in deep do do because they were desperate to win.

Go Dogs.

If you are interested in the Cam Newton story, go to tigerdroppings.com and click on SEC Rant.
The click on the link to “As the Plains Burn.” I do not vouch for the information at this site, but it outlines a complicated pay for play plan at Auburn that goes back to 1985. It also outlines why the FBI is involved and that deals with recent federal indictments of attempts to bribe Alabama legislators over gambling legislation. One of those indicted is Milton McGregor of Victoryland. He is a big Auburn booster. Also involved is Bobby Lowder and the failure of the Colonial Bank, The FBI has wiretaps and apparently may have listened in on football related conversations. If only 1% of the stuff in this post is correct, the ultimate impact is still mind-boogling. I am not saying it is true, but read it for yourself. This is a must read for every SEC football fan.

Snoop Dawg

Cant verify the accuracty of every detail of this story, but I have been able to confirm the McGregor and Victoryland story though. Cam Newton and Family have been tied to Auburn booster Milton McGregor, ower of Victoryland. Who has been recently indicted by the Feds for buying/selling votes on gambling legislation in Alabama. During wipetaps, Feds overheard conversations of Cecil Newton trying to sell his sons services ($250K). Apparently money was funneled through Cam’s uncle in Michigan through PAC and other hidden entities, then filtered down to Cecil Newton. Information was sealed for 6 mos until the Feds could hand down indictments for the gambling issues. Thats why it took so long for the story to break. Once NCAA found out from the FBI, Miss St was contacted to verify is any solicitation occurred. Hence, all this information breaking within the past 2-3 weeks. Not sure if theres any substance to the McGregor and Newton connection, but it all sounds pretty legit.

And as far as Fairly, it was not just the spear in the back, it was the multiple late hits after the ball was well out of Murrays hands that have us UGA fans upset. He was hit late before the chop block and he was hit several more times after. Sorry AU fans, look at the game and you will see plenty of late hits by Fairly. That UGA went after him in the last minute of the game and added thus up their PF’s, was a team supporting their QB. Has nothing to do with coaching. It’s the men in the trenches taking things into their own hands. Did Cam get a PF for punching a UGA defender who was backing off as Cam was going out of bounds? Nope. Late hits and punching add up to dirty football. And as far as arrests, UGA police actually police the school and the city police actually police the city. You think AU police don’t let some things slide? Bama too? LSU too? Athens does not put up with crap and so the first call the police make is to the jail, not to the coaches. How naive do you have to be to think of all the SEC schools, UGA is the only one with kids misbehaving and getting pulled over? Good lord.
