The Cam Newton saga set to music: ‘Son of a Preacher Man’

Kudos to the fine folks at EDSBS and the Orlando Sentinel for unearthing this musical nugget, which we at AJC.com feel duty-bound to pass along to you, dear surfers. There’s no new information regarding Cam Newton relayed herein, but it is, you’ll have to admit, pretty darn amusing.

The talented artist’s name — not his given name, we assume — is MoonPie. (We can also assume this isn’t the Mike “Moonpie” Wilson who played offensive line at Georgia back in the ’70s alongside Cowboy Joel Parrish.) I have e-mailed the song stylist requesting further information about him (and also his rather astonishing hat), and I will break into regularly scheduled programming to update y’all if/when Mr. Pie responds.

UPDATE: MoonPie responds!

Mr. Bradley,
Thanks for your e-mail.
I would love to play in the Atlanta area.
I am a musician, but more of a singer/frontman.
I have an act called Kenny LoveChild & the Party (you can YouTube that as well) which is more professional and much less comic.  If you have any contacts, let me know.
I am a GAMECOCK.  But I just love college football.
Honestly the hat came off the “closeout” rack at the local Family Dollar several years ago.

I’m sure you’ve heard the Dusty Springfield song “Son of a Preacher Man” a zillion times, and if you’re as cool as Dave O’Brien you doubtless have the LP from which it sprang on 180-gram vinyl. If you don’t, I’d urge you to click over to iTunes and download “Dusty in Memphis” now. It’s a classic. (As was Dusty’s 1987 re-emergence on the  Pet Shop Boys song, “What I Have Done to Deserve This?,” which can be found on the likewise tremendous PSB long player “Actually.”)

And it probably should come as no surprise that a sporting tribute (of sorts) would have an Auburn connection. As we know, the famous Mark Teixeira song of summer 2007 was the fabulous work of two AU students who called themselves “Tito and the Gun Show.” Forced to make a value judgment, I’m not sure the updated “Son of the Preacher Man” contains anything quite so memorable as “If I were a woman I’d prob’ly marry ya” from the Teixeira magnum opus, but the line about Danny Ford is in, as we say, the ballpark.

But enough. Here, courtesy of YouTube, you go:

Hey Thuga dwag – Newton violated the law as many times BY HIMSELF in one year at Florida as the entire UGA team in Athens. So let’s lose the holier than thow crap; every team has players get in trouble. Some schools just hide it from the press better than others.

The lawyer of the accused is going to assure you the Newtons are blameless? Really? The same man they are paying to defend them? Really? And since you can’t prove a negative (prove they didn’t do it) how is he going to do that?

MARK;

You usually cut through the BS, so here is my problem with this whole deal. Most of the “reporting” out there seems to minimize the fact that Miss State has BOOSTERS, who are passionate about their football program, and they are not angels in white robes.

Why is no reporter asking the question about what in the world two Miss State boosters were doing getting involved in the recruiting process? Bill Bell and John Bond may have been former players, but today they are Boosters – by their own admission. Mullen said “only the coaches can recruit for Miss State.” When Rogers asked Bell for $180k, why didn’t Bell say “what in the world are you talking about?” Instead, he continued taking phone calls and text messages from Rogers. John Bond went on the record saying Rogers “didn’t seem like he knew what he was doing” asking for money. Maybe $180k was too much money for Bell to throw down, but it sure seems like he was a potential source of $$, past or present, or Rogers would not have called him.

I just read the Channel 2 interview with the Newton’s Lawyer. The Newtons obviously need money, because they hired a lawyer who said “Cam took no money from no one”. Really, “no money from no one” as opposed to “Cam didn’t take money from anyone” What law school did he graduate from? And then spent most of his time threatening to sue the University of Florida for talking about Cam’s academic record and how that information is protected.

One of the great vocalists of all time and her best album…at least my favorite. Her back-up muscians were “the Memphis Group” which were the “MGs” in Booker T. & the MGs. In the song, “Windmills of Your Mind”, you’ll hear a rare Hungarian hammered dulcimer. This is all well and good; however, the gist of my message is that it looks like the Barn is only a heartbeat away from a huge penalty.

All the Gators on here last year swore up and down that they would not miss a beat this year without Tebow. “We got 5 star athletes standing in line to come to Florida”!!! They also said that Brantley was a better QB than Tebow- we will be better if anything on offense in 2010. Their responses last year to questions about life after Tebow was a perfect example of typical Gator arrogance. And now they are eating large portions of crow- in places other than the AJC blogs!!! So funny!

THIS JUST IN A FEW HOURS AGO….okay. I heard some interesting info this evening. I’ve been telling Bama fans to be careful for what they wish for….McGregor’s VictoryLand in Shorter, AL, 20 minutes from the Alabama state capitol of Montgomery where MOST of the politicians are BAMA supporters. Explain this one. How is it that Julio Jones is rolling up at the racetrack in a NEW Lincoln Navigator and throwing hundreds at the track? Witnesses. This is a college kid with no income and his parents are poor. Hmm…I told you folks earlier…..this is bigger than Cam Newton. Bama has been hoopla and celebratin…remember…I told ya that road out of Montgomery leads many directions….MOSTLY to Tuscaloosa. McGregor is dirty…no doubt. BUT those Roll Tide Politicians in the Montgomery courthouse are loosing sleep tonight. In other words, Alabama, for once, could be on the same side as AU!

Aubie-won-knobi

THIS JUST IN!! How is it that Julio Jones is seen rolling up to the VictoryLand racetrack in a NEW Lincoln Navigotor and throwing HUNDREDS at the bids….more than one occasion. I told BAMA fans earlier…be careful what you wish for. McGregor and his VictoryLand Mafia at the end of the day are about PROFITS and RACKETEERING…by any means necessary. That’s a sneaky road that leads out of Montgomery all the way straight to Tuscaloosa. So…how much mondey did BAMA politicians and BAMA boosters invest in the track to sway bennies in the way of Bama? You can divert the attention to Auburn all you want but at the end of the day, Tuscaloosa controls Montgomery AND the politicians. So how’s that tide rolling for you now? Stay tuned people..it will only get better. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR….

bamaguy…aren’t you sounding just a bit desperate? Dude…wait till the VictoryLand crap implodes and it’s connections to University of Alabama come out. You DO know where Montomgery is, don’t you? For a state capitol, it’s unbelievable how many of it’s citizens live in trailer parks, fly the rebel flag and yell Roll Tide as they cruise down the by-pass in their pick-up trucks, sporting state of the art gun racks.

Einstein…so impressed with your Hungarian reference of good music. I, a Russian/Hungarian/Turkish/Polish ancestor have ACTUAL recorded original music from the “old country” so, pray tell, what are you talking about when you say this girl is referencing Auburn? My 1/2 inch vinyls from the 30’s were passed down from my great-grandfather from Russia. Nothing worse than a wannabe. Not everyone who reads thes blogs are Southern born, Southern bred with no history other than the Civil War. Now…go along and fly that Rebel flag somewhere else.
