Tech falls to KSU: The Wizard of Techwood dazzles us again

The Wizard of Techwood: New year, same image. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

It's a brand new season, but it's the same old outcome. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

If Paul Hewitt isn’t the worst basketball coach in the country, it’s only because ours is a mighty big country. And now, having said that, I ask: At this late date, who needs convincing?

There are no real Hewitt defenders. There are a few excuse-makers, but nobody seriously believes this is a first-tier coach anymore. I could cite his record yet again, but here’s all anyone needs to know: In the spring of 2004 he won five NCAA tournament games in 15 days; in his other nine seasons at Georgia Tech combined, he has won two.

On Monday his Jackets took a ride up I-75 and showed us they aren’t even the best team in Metro Atlanta. They lost 80-63 to Kennesaw State, which has only recently become a fully vested member of the NCAA’s Division I. Tech never led. It trailed by 20 points after 15 1/2 minutes, by 15 points at the half. It was one of those games that was shocking and yet not surprising at all.

Afterward Hewitt was his usual serene self, noting that KSU “out-toughed us” and trotting out the boilerplate: “It’s just a matter of showing more maturity.” And thus did the Owls join the list of Hewitt conquerors, a n array that includes IUPUI, Winthrop, UNC Greensboro and Illinois-Chicago (twice).

Tech made nearly as many turnovers (19) as baskets (21) Monday. This from a team that essentially starts four guards. This from a team that lost two McDonald’s All-Americans to the NBA early but still boasts one more McDonald’s All-American than Kennesaw State will ever sign. (Although the Owls do employ what coach Tony Ingle called “our Wendy’s offense — get it to go, cheese on the fries, let it fly.”)

Afterward Ingle was asked if Tech had recruited any of his players. He said, “No.” But somehow the Owls, who were 13-20 last season when Tech was underachieving its way into the NCAA tournament, were much the better team. They didn’t have the better players, but they were the better team. Which is the story of post-2004 Georgia Tech basketball.

The biggest excuse for Hewitt — I heard it from longtime acquaintance Charles Barkley last spring — is that he’s always losing players early to the pros. And that’s true: S ix Jackets have left eligibility on the table to declare for the NBA draft, Derrick Favors and Gani Lawal most recently. But it’s not as if Hewitt has accomplished much with his one-and-dones: Chris Bosh, Thaddeus Young, Javaris Crittenton and Favors managed a total of one NCAA tournament victory.

And it’s not as if the guys who stay fare any better. Hewitt had Anthony Morrow for four seasons, after which Morrow wasn’t able to persuade an NBA team to risk even a second-round pick on him. He landed with Golden State as a free agent. This summer he signed a three-year contract with the Nets for $12 million.

This month Alex Raskin of the Wall Street Journal wondered if Morrow is the greatest shooter in NBA history. (Not just in the NBA now. In the NBA ever.) And here was a quote from Steve Kerr, the former Phoenix general manager whose status as the league’s all-time leading three-point shooter is being threatened by Morrow: “I saw him a couple of times in college and he didn’t really light it up. He got a little lost on his team. It just didn’t seem like he really blossomed there.”

Who does blossom under Hewitt? Bosh and Favors didn’t get the ball enough. Apart from Jarrett Jack, no point guard has ever really directed a Hewitt team. (Moe Miller, who saved last season after being relegated to the end of the bench, is again not starting.)

But enough. You know what’s going on. Hewitt is a lousy coach, but his golden contract makes him untouchable. Dan Radakovich, the Tech athletic director, sat behind the bench at the KSU Convocation Center last night and looked pained. The man with the $7 million buyout was losing to a school based in the county where Radakovich lives — by 17 points.

Oh, and if you haven’t seen my take on Kennesaw State and its coach … that post can be found here.

Hard to believe this team is actually worse than the product we put out on the field last year… but there it is. It’s last year’s team, only now instead of just committing 20 turnovers a game, we also can’t shoot the ball or get rebounds.

Paul Hewitt’s gotta be fired. He’s a “good recruiter,” but all of these NBA-caliber recruits stagnate under his leadership. It’s time to start over.

I am in no way a basketball fan…. but I THOROUGHLY enjoyed watching the itty bitty school from Kennesaw, Ga dismantle the MIGHTY ACC team from Atlanta last night.

This blog is about to be full of Techies pointing out the struggles of UGA football, and unproven basketball…….

but let me be one of the first to revel in an EMBARRASSING loss last night to a program full of pompous nerds.

Mark, you could have shortened your blog to this:

It renders all else irrelevant. The “evergreen contract” are like eternal handcuffs: DRAD has no recourse.

Here we go again..we lost one game, and now you are calling for his head, he went to an Acc championship game(the refs put Singler on the line 25 times) and won a game in the Ncaas with a team with 2 nba players,1 was drafted on the second round..and starting 3 freshman and a soph..He is not a bad coach, if he was a bad coach, schools would not be waiting for him to get out of the worst sports city in America, and coach their program..St johns is a better job than Tech…you are a prime example why Atlanta teams will never win anything, ever!!!Oh yeah how about complaining about the awful officiating in the Acc…

Mark, I am not sure if I have ever heard you so convincingly call out a coach like you have here. Only if there was enough interest in basketball by either major institution.
Obviously, Hewitt thought it was going to be a cakewalk after overwhelming the Owls last year at AMC.

So many examples as to why Hewitt just doesn’t cut it…I would think his continued losing streak in the ACC would be enough for Radakovich to cut his losses and bite into that 7M hoagie that he was saddled with when he joined on.

If Hewitt has smiled this year, it will probably be one of the few times going forward. Even Wes can’t make this one any easier to take.

I am sure DRad has heard the chorus and barring a drastic change in the basketball program direction he will have no choice but to fire CPH at season’s end. Making this decision easier and necessary is that Gailey’s payout will be concluded and a new basketball structure will be in place for the 2012-13 season. This season will be difficult to stomach but with the right hire GT basketball should return to at least the upper level of the ACC within a couple of seasons.

GT

Well put. Kentucky had like four one and done kids last year. Favors was considered the best out of high school, he never really showed up until the end at Tech, costing this one and doner a few draft picks and a lot of money. The offense, when the McDonald All Americans could get the ball inbound, and up the court ran through Gani Lawal, who would get fouled and miss most of his foul shots. Look at the assistant coaches, and compare them to any assistant coaching staff in the ACC. They don’t compare. Who wants to come work for a head coach both football and basketball tells you volumes about the head coach. There are high school staffs in this country, maybe in the metro area better than what Hewitt has hired to sit on his bench.

I was looking at Spurrier’s coaching staff the other day. Arguably the best coach of the active coaches in college football. Two of his own sons and a son of another great college coach are on his staff. Watch where the son’s of great coaches end up, what staff they learn under.

Keep Hewitt, the Dawgs need the victory every year, but seriously why allow the contract to keep him in the job. You can pay him and a better coach as well. How, you find an up and coming coach like Mr Ingle and explain that you will give him the job and a chance to break into the big time, but you can’t pay much. You double Ingle’s pay and give him the chance. What is the downside, you are going to pay Hewitt anyway and lose, so spend an extra 100,000 and reward a good guy, who you know can do no worse.

When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

So um… change the recruiting and go the Duke/Butler etc route.

Go find 4 year college players. Lanky, dull, bounce passers that are receptive to coaching. Go sign the next Bobby Hurley… go find another tall uncoordinated high school center who will play hard.

Go get a JJ Reddick who did nothing but shoot jump shots for 12 years.

He keeps squandering talent. So go get some average players that want to go to Tech for the education and run the princeton offense or something.

Stop treating the team like it’s an NBA D league squad and getting guys who OBViously only need to be in college for a year.

I think Tech has plenty of access to capital if they want to fire Hewitt.

I can only conclude that DRad has had that conversation with BPeterson, and there is some threshold of pain that has to be exceeded for them to pull the trigger, $7MM buyout or not.

Then again, perhaps BPeterson has already made the decision that, defacto, GT’s performance on the basketball court is just not that important to the image of the school, or to the alumni who contribute to the Institute in some way, shape, or form. If so, expect a descent over time to the bottom of the ACC.

Mark – You pretty much nailed it with your blog. Hewitt is a terrible coach and he needs to go for the good of the program. There are 2 reasons why Hewitt is still coach – the contract (of course!) and the fact that b’ball is not as important at GT as at some other schools. Wake Forest fired a coach with a much better record than Hewitt. NCState ran off a coach because they didn’t like his offense. UNC pulled the trigger on Matt Doherty after 3 years.

Correction for Glory, Glory…….KSU is not an “itty bitty” school. Most people seem to think it still is small………but it’s got about 22,000 students and is the third largest university in Georgia. It is a LOT bigger than Ga. Tech if you are counting the student population. The only thing they lack is enough land to expand their campus. There campus is relatively small and landlocked but they are expanding on the east side of I-75 as well as having built several new buildings on its main campus in the last several years. So they have more students than Ga. Tech and are still growing!

You know I bet the ACC would toss in a few million too. What happen last night is not very good for the brand, in fact I think it may be worth 7 million for the ACC to not have this happen again in this media center. Richt hasn’t even gotten this bad, he still carries the SEC label well, kids still want to go to Georgia because it is in the SEC, and they have respect of who he is. We lost some kids last night, in recruiting, the conference may lose some kids because of this too. I think Virginia lost a game this bad 20 years ago in Hawaii, but these are not good things to happen to any of the ACC teams and would only happen to Tech, in this era.

Hewitt can’t coach; they only reason he’s done as well as he has is because he manages to recruit the on-and-done types. He’ll continue to be able to recruit the on-and-done types because he has a track record of getting into the NBA. However, he has NO track record of taking non-Lottery talent and doing anything with it; so those “next-tier” players won’t be fooled anymore by his “I’m President of the Black Coaches Association” speech intended to convey the level of respect and esteem by which he is held by his peers.

Then, the next domino will fall… the one-and-done types will stop coming. This guy is clueless. GT cannot continue this; We have to bite the bullet. And as alumni, we need to vote with our pocketbooks.

I fully expect DRad to drag his sorry *ss into the office and ask him directly “Is that the best product you can put on the floor? I went to one game last year. I have for a number of years now just lost confidence in Hewitt. I can only hope Hewitt is just half the man that Cremins is. When the program waned under Cremins he was man enough to move on. I believe Hewitt will do the same irregardless of his contract. It would be hard for any of us to do that, but I believe a settlement will be worked out and we will not have to pay the 8M or whatever the figure is. Will always be Tech fan. The actual cost is not $7M. We are going to have to pay CPH whether he stays or goes. The actual cost is what we would have to pay his replacement. Assuming we hire a mid-major guy, he probably starts at $0.5M which hopefully goes up the some $1M in 5 years due to performance. Thus the real cost is some $3 to $4M.

The money was ther last year to fire CPH. However, you cannot fire a coach who ha sjust taken you to some 23 wins, 2nd place in the ACC and the second round of the NCAAs. If we go 5 – 25 this year, things will be different.

A fact of matter is any coach could have had a better result than 80-63 loss to KSU. I’m not discrediting KSU’s effort. They played better and most of all coached way better. But with the talent Tech has, no other coach could have lost this game by 17. So where’s the value in keeping him. Is he really a good recruiter? How hard is it to get players like Favors and Lawal to come to Tech? They live in the area and get exposed being in ACC. Now he can’t even bring guys in GA. It’s now or later.

I don’t think we can get anyone on the level of a Coach K or Roy Williams, and but let me tell you – Seth Greenberg is kicking our *ss too. So are the coaches at FSU and Miami.

Do you think that Roy Williams would have done better with our players than Hewitt? What about Greenberg? Coach K certainly would have. Why should we accept less?

You’re not going to get a coach into this position for less than a million, more likely 1.5, because the alumni are going to want someone who has been proven at a number of places – not a one-shot-wunderkind…

there are 2 reasons why phewitt graces our sidelines with his presence still.
1.) his contract and 2.) his connection with the BCA.

by sticking around and taking our program down phew has already shown that he is classless and thief. we gave him his big break an this is how he repays the program. it is well known that he has no tolerance for the fans or the school. unlike bobby cremins phew loves phew not gt.

Hewitt Fan..real funny…Tech has players…Tech doesn’t have a team. Generally it really helps if you have a quality point guard to take a team to a great season. Seems like Hewitt wants all of his players to be in the range of 6′4″- 6′6″ long length. Thats all great but you loose quickness with those type players. Sure they can rebound and block out better….at least they are suppose to be able to. Hewitt supposedly has all this talent and can’t win in the ACC. At some point you have to quit blaming the players. The players are there to be coached UP. He seldom does that. Something is wrong. Maybe these guys aren’t smart enough to learn and be coached UP. Their turn over ratio sucks. High school players, at least good ones know not to continually turn the ball over.
Our basketball team seems to have the same problem as Georgia’s football team…lots of tallent…little results….now who do you really blame that on year after year??
In todays money driven college sports arena coached that don’t win get fired. He can be the nicest guy in the world and look very dapper on the side lines…but you still have to WIN. That is the measuring stick that every coach is measured by. No body gives a hoot about what color you are…just win baby win!

Contracts are only 9/10th of the law. The other 1/10th is reason. It is reasonable to assume that his contract was written with the understanding that he would continue to perform at a level somewhat commensurate with his production in 2003-2004. Paul Hewitt has violated the implied terms of his contract and should be terminated for cause.

A lot of similarities with CPH at GT and CMR with UGA football. Both had great success early on which sparked high contracts, renewal, etc. The GT BB program has been awlful the last 4 or 5 years with losing records in the ACC, road wins non-existent and spare me the GT NCAA’s last year. They had a losing record again in the regular season. Similar to last few years with UGA football. CPH is mediocre at best and has lived off of the final four the last five years. Thanks for calling it like it is. Tech fans have been suffering for years with Hewitt. The AD must feel the pressure, otherwise it is very easy to rationalize keeping Hewitt because of the dollars. Firing Hewitt is going to set the athletic department back and we know this AD is all about the money. But the AD needs to know that keeping Hewitt will cost more in the long run. We are losing a generation of fans. The kids graduating from GT today don’t care about GT basketball because they think GTBB has always sucked. Delay the new remodeled AMC, save the program first. It appears, from memory, that you lifted entire paragraphs from your previous column(s).

I watched the game with a lot of interest. I really thought Kennesaw would give GT all they wanted. GT is not a good team.

In preseason Hewitt said GT was going “guard” because they “really shoot the ball well”. Actually, the shooting stinks. And it usually does on Hewitt teams. And that I do not understand. The Morrow case is a perfect example. The guy came in as a lights out shooter and only got worse. He then goes to the NBA and, once again, becomes a lights out shooter.

Mark, as you may remember, I have long been a proponent of firing Paul Hewitt (since 2006) and taking whatever financial hits we have to take as a result of the WGOGGE (Worst Contract On God’s Green Earth). I am disgusted, yes…disgusted, by the pitiful on-court performance of the team and the coach, given the talent, the institute, and the conference we play in. Equally important, in my opinion as an alumni and supporter, is Hewitt’s dereliction of duties as an academic leader and officer of the Institute, including: actively recruiting players with the implicit assurance they will have his blessing if they leave early, actively recruiting players with no realistic chance of graduating, failing to graduate an acceptable number of “student”-athletes all the way down the bench, and his polarizing social agenda/politics. He is not, and has never really been, the positive presence he was originally packaged as when sold to Tech by Braine & co. Now he has even lost the students (look at attendance late last year and so far this year) who were his last best friends. Even if we have to take a chance and hire a rising coaching star on the cheap, or maybe a retired giant as a transitional leader, I am sure we can bite the bullet and structure an acceptable contract for someone to weather the next few years of painful payouts to a fired Hewitt. It is clear he will not go quietly or even reasonably (and I can’t blame him given the money).

Dear Paul Hewitt and Dan Radakovich, it’s a tough economy in the real world, people are suffering, jobs are scarce. I’ve still got a job, mainly because I’m a TECH grad, but I’ve had to cut back on my discretionary spending. But you convinced me that when a TECH man is down, other TECH men rally to his side and help bring the entire Institute up. You implored all TECH alums to support the basketball program, with the promise that things would be better. I bought into the concept and spent my hard earned money to once again get season tickets. It was an expense that I really could have done without, but out of my loyalty to my school I went ahead and did it. The fact that you tied getting priority seating in the new arena in a couple of years to having season tickets this year was a little distasteful, but I understood. Hey, I love my school and I love watching good and sometimes great college basketball.

But now I feel like I’ve been duped. The last 3 years (some would say last 6 years), going to the games has not been much fun. I still enjoy the camaraderie of my buddies that I share tickets with, but watching the product on the court has been frustrating at best and sometimes just plain painful. I’ve seen a lot of talented kids wasting their talent playing a brand of basketball that is distasteful to anyone who has an eye for the game.

Coach Hewitt, I don’t expect you to resign during the season, and I would be surprised if Dan fires you during the season. But at the end of the year, if the product continues to be similar to what I saw last night, be a man and do the right thing. To hold the Institute that gave you such a wonderful opportunity as coaching in a major city, in the best basketball conference in the land, hostage for the buy out money, would just be wrong. Hopefully you have invested the incredible amount of money you have already been paid and will not have to worry about your family’s future. Your future I could care less about.

I would be truly delighted if all of a sudden the team finds itself, we go on to a solid season and we enjoy quality college basketball this year and for years to come with you at the helm. But the track record doesn’t warrant that belief.

I will be at most of the games the rest of the year and I hope for the best. But if the quality of play is what it has been recently, expect to hear a lot of boos from the sparse crowds that actually show up. Please tell the kids, that the boos are not directed at them. They have done nothing wrong. Be a man and take the blame. Then be a man and walk away with what little dignity you have left.

AS for the UGA fans posting here, anything negative you have to say about the Tech basketball program under Hewitt has already been said a dozen times over by Tech fans, so save your breath for when the state trooper asks you to blow into the little machine…

Mark – EXCELLENT article. You’ve simply reinforced why you are my favorite columnist. You’re never afraid to call it out, and this article is dead on. You’ve puncutated what the entire GT community has been screaming the last 5 years. Favors’ signing was the ONLY thing that saved his butt last year. I’m a season tix holder and will not be going to any of the games, nor will I be selling them. I’d rather make sure the seats are empty as a show of support for his firing. Surely to god Hewitt’s firing had to be a condition of McCamish’s donition to the new arena????

Vote with your pocketbooks.

When Tech calls asking for money, tell them “Call me back when we have a new BB coach.”

When they send you a letter solicitation, return it with a handwritten note “Take me off your list until we have a new BB coach.” Or, simply take a black permanent marker and overwrite the letter with “Fire Hewitt”, then send it back.

When your copy of Radakovic’s “The Good Word” hits your inbox, reply to it with “The Good Word? Fire Hewitt”

But truth be told, I actually think UGA has a top 25 football team this year, they’ve unfortunately found ways to loose, not get beat, but loose. Who knows if UGA can survive the loss of the SEC player of the year on the hardwoods, it will be tough. I say we put Richt, Grantham, the GT special teams coach if we even have one, along with Hewitt in a boat and push the damn thing over the dam.

One moment to reflect-

Morrow wasn’t all everything because of Hewitt and ACC refs who were bound and determined to make Redick player of the year. Redick was the only guard in history who could knee a defender in the groin 28 feet out and fling a shot up and shoot 3 free throws.

As to Hewitt, there is nothing worse than watching talented young men with absolutely no plan. They had a better shot in using their talents in rugby.

Hewitt consistently denies help (even free help from Price) for ex players because of insecurity. The donors would pay up- get him out.

***For Immediate Release*** November 16, 2010 (Reuters)

ATLANTA, GA – Georgia tech announced today that Paul Blewitt has been released from his basketball coaching duties.

After due consideration, the Athletic Association Board said, “We want to thank Coach Blewitt for his contributions, and wish him well in his future endeavors propagating the virtues of street basketball in America.

We also wish to announce that the Institute has retained the services of an anonymous blogger called Tech75 (apparently an alumnus). Contract terms are confidential, but trust me, if you saw them you’d laugh.

Our expectations are high that Tech75 can get the basketball team playing more effective playground ball, or barring that, to at least walk and chew gum without hurting themselves or the fans. He also claims to have the ability to get players to go to class, although there seem to be some sort of financial strings attached to that claim. We’ll see.

We all look forward with optimism to this new dawn in the history of Tech Basketball. Go Jackets!”

I had almost convinced myself that with a possibly more balanced team (no one-and-done hot shots), he might actually produce something this year. I had a long well written post that apparently was too long for the AJC blogs.
The abbreviated version is:
I got duped into paying my hard earned money for season tickets. Money I could easily have used to better purposes in this bad economy.
DRAD played on the “when a Tech Man is down, other TECH Men rally to his aid and help out to raise him up.” Plus they pulled the “if you want good seats in the new arena you better have season tickets”.
Watching this poor excuse for college basketball ain’t fun anymore.

Hewitt was given a wonderful opportunity to coach in a major market and in the best basketball conference in the NCAA’s. He has squandered that opportunity.

I implore Hewitt, at seasons end (I don’t expect him to resign mid season and I’d be surprised if DRAD pulled the trigger in mid season), be a man and walk away and not hold the Institute that gave you such a great opportunity hostage for the buy out money.

I would be delighted if the team found itself and the season turned out to be a success. But the past results tell me there is no way.

And Hewitt, if the product continues as we have seen, expect a lot of boos from the sparse crowds that do show up. Please tell the kids that the boos are not directed at them. They are not to blame.

Yellow Britches

November 16th, 2010

Can anyone, I mean anyone, stand to watch this product. Year in and year out Hewitt teams display no court sense, discipline, tenacity or touch. No one gets better playing under Paul Hewitt. They make the same mistakes in year three (if they stay that long) they made in year one. Painful. We won’t win three games in our conference this year. Just a thought, will it be cheaper to buy him out when no one comes to games anymore? David Braine skunks us again.

“In the case of Coach Hewitt and Georgia Tech basketball, we remain together because we are Georgia Tech. Coach Hewitt remains the same bright, desirable and coveted college basketball coach he was in 2004. If you have any doubt, just read the New York City newspapers from the past week. His credentials as a human being, a family man, a leader and builder of character are impeccable. The mission here is clear. We need to win more basketball games. We will continue to do everything within our power to do that — as an organization — with Paul Hewitt as our basketball coach. It is not a one-man mission. We are all committed to scour every inch of the program, suggest and effect the needed changes and to give the coach every ounce of support.”

If he was recruiting nothing but 4 year players, pushing up the graduation rate, and had semi-respectable ACC records, I’d be just fine with Hewitt. I’m sick of him bringing in the one and ones, and I’m tired of great talent getting coached down.

Hewitt is an example of why Tech will always be crap. Hewitt and Paul Johnson are stubborn and do not adjust. Tech is not elite enough to be arrogant like Hewitt and Johnson. We are in for several years of pain. Fire Hewitt now and take our lumps. Johnson will be gone in three years when we reach absolute bottom.

No more contributions from this sad soul, cannot handle a football coach that states beating Georgia does not define our season. He is nuts, that is when I lost all respect for Mister arrogant Johnson!

he brings in the talent, he even went to a final four championship game, he’s a good family man (i guess?) and he seems like a nice guy. but jeez! georgia tech sits in the middle of an abundance of basketball talent; the number one boy’s b-ball team in the country is in atlanta, to the south of us is florida and mississippi and south and north carolina are right up the road. the man has connections in the northeast and i understand that the majority of the quality academic qualifiers are marinating in jersey and if louisville, villanova, kentucky, duke or unc don’t get them i am sure he could have his pick of the litter after them. so what’s the problem? atlanta is a great city. what big time high school b-ball player would not want to come here. the city, the women, the academics, the chance to workout with pros in an area notoriously populated with current and ex- nba players. tech should be a power. period! the reason why is obvious, coach hewitt for all his likeablity is not a very good game coach. he can recruit his butt off but he can’t coach. tech should never lose to a kennesaw state. i know why hewitt stayed, atlanta “is” a great city and if i had my druthers i would not move my family back to new york neither. for all it’s crime and “new york city envy.” the atl is the place to be. coach should access the situation and maybe wait out georgia state’s current situation with barnes. he probably could coach on that level and barnes is not doing enough there either. so, it’s a “win-win” for everyone, hewitt moves over to gsu next year and gets to stay here and we get a coach who can get it done.

With Hewitt’s lack of success at Tech is what makes me skeptical of CY Young at GA Southern. Obviously this is somewhat unrelated, but both have been given the label of great recruiters as both of them are if you look at the players CY has brought into GA Southern and who Hewitt has brought into Tech, yet neither team has a clue on offense if it even is an offense. But I know that the ACC was a much stronger conference when Tech was up there with Duke, Maryland, NC State, Carolina, et al, and we need Tech in order to regain our status as the premiere basketball conference. Hewitt is a joke as a coach. He couldn’t coach up high school kids. He may be able to recruit and his players don’t get into trouble…….very good attributes…………but he absolutely can’t coach. Example, look at Anthony Morrow……….lost at GT but is an undrafted free agent in the NBA and becomes a great player after they he is finally coached out. Hewitt needs to be fired now. Where is the accountability at GT. There is none. I know of GT employees who are fired for poor performance but Hewitt is an untouchable!!! Give me a break. Take a look when it was good at some of the caliber plays back in 2004 on You Tube. Somebody did something right. This once proud program that did compete with Duke and North Carolina and others has been completely dimantled and run completely into the ground by this so called coach Paul Hewitt, If he had any real love for GT he would take a lesser buyout and resign. However, I do not beleive the man loves or has ever loved GT. It was just a podium for his agenda. What is his agenda you ask, well look at his hires for assistant coaches when he has an opening. Take the last one, when we really needed some experience at the assitant position. someone like a Dean Keener or someone that had say 15 to 20 years experience to help us who does he hire? Darryl LaBarrie. A former player and yes man to Hewitt. Not to get down on Mr. LaBarrie, just to point out this mans agenda. He has no love lost for GT and his lack of love for the institute and his lack of dignity means he will play this for all he can get. Well fine, it is time to fire his sorry ass and pay the jerk off. Drad did not create the problem, but as one of my owners told me long ago when I was made boss after he fired the other guy ” I know you did not create the mess, but I full expect you to handle the mess” . Well Drad, I have loved what you have done for GT, but it is time to handle this mess and shove the garbage to the street. Cremmins built a solid and mostly always competitive team, all but his last 3 or 4 years. Hewitt has destroyed all that was built here and should leave immediately. Hell, let Darryl LaBarrie take over, he certainly cannot be any worse than the joke of a coach we have now.

Also, @ pro jackets..if hewitt had won 2 or 3 or more titles as Roy Williams has and coach K has he would not be catching this type of heat. Except for one run of 5 games 6 years ago, the only team he had that overachieved was his first one that he took over from Cremmins. That leave 8 years of underachieving. If most all of us underachieved as this guy has we would not keep our jobs either. Wake up and get all your facts lined up before you take one random year when a team is down and the say “we beat Roy” why don’t you look at the total record. Most of us here are not on Hewitt because of 1 year, it is because of 7 or 8 years.

Dave Braine ruined my 26 yr (football) season ticket ride. Started in the west stands (Homer Rice was AD) and got to the 15 yd line, 18th row. Box seat construction moved me to the east stands and finally got to the 43 yd line, 16th row, lower east. Then Braine decided to sell yellow seat tickets to Toyota and other big companies’ executives. I moved to the upper east 45 yd line and held them until they no longer let me park on Techwood Dr. Put up with it 2 more yrs and now I love my HD TV with my drinks out of my cooler at arms reach and great food from my own table. Loyalty is gone from Tech athletics and I’ve been affected by seeing the idiots like Braine and Clough make stupid decisions that affect me as an alum. Thank goodness for DRad but he needs to make a decision on Hewitt soon.

I was at the massacre (football) at Bobby Dodd Stadium this past Saturday and to see half the yellow seats empty (where I used to sit) was just insulting. Just and example that better decisions need to be made before our BB program is too far down the toilet.

Kudos for Kennessaw for their win. Hewitt’s contract is another mistake from Braine and Clough, and Tech will need to make a move on that, sooner or later – better sooner. I’ll bet that we could get a local high school coach that can immediately outcoach Hewitt, for a fraction of Hewitt’s contract.

Geez, all these ugagers here espousing such wisdom. I am sure you guys and Murray will win in Athens this year, but for all of you that claim that Tech is irrelevant and not even a rival, it is funny how this game has defined your season for the last 3 or 4 years. My how the mighty have fallen. Also, I don’t care what conference you are in 5 and 6 or 6 and 6 means you are irrelevant also. I am sure that is why you are here taking shots at Tech. You are just as irrelevant in your conference as we are ours, the difference, you accomplished it with 4 and 5 “star” recruits. We are lucky to have 3 or 4 4 “star” recruits on our entire roster and for the most part has always been that way. UT beats their non rival Vandy 23 or 24 straight, and you get excited with 8 out of 9. With your advantages you should be beating Tech like UT does Vandy. But with all the lack of class you guys have, drunken AD’s, arrest everwhere so that you won the Fulmer cup, a DC that gives the choke hold to a student athlete, and trashing your own campus. Yeah, I hope beating Tech makes your season over and over and over again, because that means you are irrelevant, and it looks as if it could be that way for a while. You guys sure have nothing else to hang your hat on but beating Tech, and all of you here just proves that beating Tech is all you have in your pathetic lives. I do not see it happening, but it would be funny if ugag turned the ball over 4 or 5 times and Tech won…then what would you numnuts talk about to define your miserable lives?

Dan Rad: I vote with my dollars, I’m a season FB ticket holder and used to attend Basketball games. The final straw was Tech losing their home ACC opener against FSU. The team with all of that talent looked like they were playing a playground pick up game. I won’t pay for another ticket while Hewitt is coach, heck I won’t go to a Hewitt coached game even if I was given tickets. Take a look at what Pitt’s coach Jamie Dixon has done with a lot less talent. Despite losing four starters–including two NBA players DeJuan Blair and Sam Young, Dixon guided his 2009-10 Pitt team to a 25-9 overall record, second place finish in the Big East with a 13-5 slate, the school’s ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and a No. 3 seed upon entering the tourney.

Hewitt is the man! Hewitt will take GT to the Final Four this year, then, everyone will be wanting to extend his contract . . . if not, then, Hewitt will show that he is the man by resigning . . . just watch Hewitt will show that he is a man!

Anthony Morrow’s play here and in the nba is the biggest referendum against hewitt.
The guy can’t coach and basically won the lottery in getting this job. Cut the loser lose and take the loss. You don’t keep a liability that continues to erode your product. You get rid of it.

I have a brilliant idea everyone. Bet against Hewitt every game that has a line. You’re sure to win 80% of the time. By seasons end, everyone will have enough money to get rid of the hewitt virus.

Albany is BAD. Watch the game be a nail biter.

I asked Coach what he/she thought about PH’s coaching. The answer? “HE WOULD PROBABLY MAKE A GOOD ASST. COACH.” I don’t think PH is even that good!

rex, Cremins walked away, he wasn’t fired. He admitted he was burned out, had lost his taste for big time college ball and just wasn’t getting the job done. Funny how a guy can admit that after 2 bad years and walk away like a man.
Let’s see if Hewitt is a man as well and admits his shortcomings and walks away as well.

After a dozen or so seasons as a season ticket holder, I did not renew this year. Is it the under achieving? Is it the Carelessness with the Basketball? Is it the inability to make free throws? Is it the inability to close out games? Not getting the best players the ball or even a situation to perform?
Players Not Understanding Roles? Or just overall sloppy basketball.

Go back to the beginning season of 2004 and they way they dominated those first 12 games before losing in double overtime to GA. They were beating teams by 20 and 30 points and ranked TT, Uconn and others. We all thought it was his style of basketball. Pressure defense that created turnovers, fast breaks, Sharing & distributing the ball with quick passes that found open people for easy shots & dunks. If you dont remember, the best example would be how Kennesaw State played against us in the first half and dominated us.

The issue is that was not his style. It was an illusion. We all bought into it. Over the last half dozen years he has proved it wasnt. It isnt even close.

I’m not sure what Hewitt’s style of play is. It seems to be whatever the five on the court think it is at the moment. Hewitt’s main responsibility seems to be rolling the ball onto the practice court and making up the lineup.

Mark,

We have become the laughing stock in collegiate sports. Even UGA hoops has surpassed ours in talent and obviously coaching. Our AD was conned into hiring the biggest hack in college football as our new leader. And don’t even get me started on our annually most overrated baseball team. I’m ashamed and embarrassed.

GT was humiliated. They are not even the best basketball team in metro Atlanta.

Football? “Well, um, we won the 2009 ACC title.” September rolled around with ALL of the ACC losses to powers like Dolly Madison or was it James Madison? Anyway, that ACC champ thang with the blow out to a fairly decent Iowa team and one of the worst UGA teams up until this year, pretty much sums up GT football ……………..a joke by Coke.

It is coming GT ……………..a whupping in what will be very, very unfriendly Athens. Imagine getting stomped by this very, very, very, very lousy UGA football team. I mean, this time next year UGA AND
Y’ALL will be looking for a football coach.

Hewitt claims the team needs more maturity. BS!!!!! What it needs is a coach. To bad he didn’t fly the coop to St. Johns but he probably knew he wouldn’t do any better there and would not have the $7M golden parachute. As stated in posts last year it is time to bite the bullet and find a way to get rid of this embarassment to the Yellow Jacket BB program. It is a shame that he does’t have the personal integrity to resign instead of holding up the Institution for a buy out that has not been earned.

U know its bad when a team is considered “on fire” when they shoot 35% from 3 pt land in one half. Is anyone else tired of landing players judged on “athletic ability” instead of shooting/ game smart ability? Im sorry, but give me a team of 5 white dudes with no Athletic ability that can shoot 50%+ from the 3pt line anyday! At least the white dudes would play with HEART and Brains!

Dear Mark Bradley,

I am just a Georgia Tech side walk fan. And it is time for CPH to go . I do not have 7 million dollars to buy out Coach Hewitt’s contract but I would think that there are a few
thousand like minded Tech fans that would gladly pony up a few dollars to get this done.
Could a person who sent in a check to the GTAA for this reason write it off on taxes ?
The GTAA needs to add a spot to their web page for the purpose of getting a list of
donors and the amount that they will pledge . ” Buy Out CPH ” . Afterwards they could
send the donors a fancy, suitable for framing certificate, that states ” I Helped Save GT
Basketball “.
Just an idea but damn … Let’s do something !
