Live from Auburn: UGA is playing, and so is Cam Newton

Jordan-Hare Stadium, four hours before kickoff. (M. Bradley photo)

Jordan-Hare Stadium, four hours before kickoff. (Ground-level photo by M. Bradley)

Auburn, Ala. – Esteemed colleague Tim Tucker and I  arrived early, for two reasons: First, it’s Auburn, and traffic is awfu,,and two, we’re expecting something Cam-related to happen. We just don’t know what and when.

The guess among early arrivals in the press box at Jordan-Hare Stadium is that Newton won’t play today, but this is only a guess. And we press-box geniuses have been wrong before. That said:

The report last night by Mark Winne of Channel 2 Action News that Cecil Newton has admitted having pay-for-play discussions regarding his son seems fairly devastating to Cam Newton’s eligibility status. (Even though Winne’s report included Cecil Newton’s claims that Cam knew nothing of the money talk, that Mississippi State never agreed to pay a dime and that Auburn paid nothing.)

Update: We’re now an hour from kickoff, and it appears Newton WILL play. He took part in the Tiger Walk, knelt at the goalpost after entering the stadium and is now going through warmups. So Auburn must be awfully confident it’s in the clear … or awfully brazen.

Updated updated: Cam Newton started and scored on Auburn’s first drive.

And with that, the floor remains open for questions, comments and Cam-related thoughts. I’ll be here all game, or until my latest computer crashes. (My AJC-issued one died for the second time in three days, and I’m using Mr. Tucker’s backup. And yes, Mr. Tucker is the only journalist in the world to travel with a backup computer, and thank goodness for it.)

Cam and Cecil are good people. Their offering plate is always full. They give more than their 10%.

Cash Newton plays because Auburn doesn’t care about any ramifications. They were screwed out of a National championship in 2004 and they’ll gladly take the hit for this next year for instant gratification now .

Mark,

See if you can find Microsoft Paint. In my computer it comes with the Windows operating system. You go to All Programs…Accessories…Paint.

If you can track it down, then here’s a link that might help you out: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/convert-bmp-to-jpg/

Good luck!

If Auburn plays Cam after NCAA officialing advising them Newton may be ineligible they are going to get crushed by the NCAA when eevrything is said and done.

The bitmap thing is easy, MB…if you’re running windows, just open the .bmp file in Paint and go to “save as”, and choose .jpg from the drop down menu (down below where you name the file).

“If Auburn plays Cam after NCAA officialing advising them Newton may be ineligible they are going to get crushed by the NCAA when eevrything is said and done.”

I’m not sure they did. The only thing I saw about this was a tweet from the yahoo sports guy, and the Asst. Commish of the SEC indicated that he’d heard nothing about it.

For purely football reasons, this UGA fan is hoping Cam plays. 1) If the Dogs can win, I want Auburn to be at its best. 2) For me, watchng Cam play has been pretty much limited to highlights. I want to watch him play and I want to see if the UGA defense corrall him.

My best guess, however, is that it’s in Auburn’s best interests to bench him. If Auburn doesn’t, they are taking a huge risk. My friend in a nearby college athletic dept. tells me that in all likelihood Newton will be declared ineligible after the NCAA, lawyers, FBI have sorted through all of this.

Where's the proof?

As a UGA fan I hope Cam plays and I think he will. The don’t have anything to lose at this point. The best thing Auburn can do is go ahead and play him and hope that he is not ruled ineligible for the season. They may as well go all in now.

If Cam can’t play it will be a shame if he had no knowledge. I think the Dawgs while wanting to win still want to do so saying we beat you with Cam in the game and your best personnal. Hope it is traditional Dawg-Tiger game which is typically close and exciting.

Let Cam play. His daddy just arrived with his gang of body guards. They are selling tickets and saying it will take between $180 and $200 to buy them. They all have on Cam’s jerseys.

To Kurt

Different senario now in that he could be ruled ineligble and now that AU had info that his father asked for money…well…they could possible win the game…yet have a forfeiture for using ineligible player so there is some degree of risk. I question that the previous games would be forfeited but not sure.

@Hackjobs if Newton’s father asked MSU for payoff (which he nows seems to have admitted) Newton would have been ineligible to play at MSU from that point on.

In an e-mail to CBS’s Dennis Dodd from NCAA spokesperson Stacey Osburn, Osburn stated:

“Generally speaking, eligibility issues are tied to the student-athlete, not the school. So if a student-athlete is ineligible at one school and then transfers to a second school, the school the student-athlete transferred to would need to seek reinstatement.”

“A news story Friday night that said a source said Newton’s father discussed money with an ex-Mississippi State football player to have his son play for the Bulldogs had previously been reviewed by people looking into the matter. The fact Newton remains eligible means the people who determine eligibility, at least now, believe neither Auburn nor Cam Newton knew of his father’s dealing with Mississippi State. ” http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2010/11/auburns_cam_newton_still_on_tr.html

I think $cam sits. Auburn hasn’t been involved in any of the violations so far, but if they play him after they’ve been warned about his eligibility, that changes. I bet the AD steps in.

Mark, on the emachines you must plug your blackberry into usb port using a specialized quantum wiring outfit and once the emachine finds the blackberry in order to convert the bitmap file into a jpeg. once the emahcine finds the bitmap you must type in the instructions “e=mc2″ and the emachine will complete the conversion at the speed of light. HOWEVER, in order to actually be able to post the jpeg you must go the further step of applying e=mc2 X the estimated amount of plays Cam will be in on today (that’s the unknown part of the equation but should be easily calculated utilizing Auburn’s well known strict adherence to NCAA rules and its sense of propriety) divided by the federal income tax rate the Elder Newton normally pays on illegal gotten gaines.

That’s the layman’s version.

Picasso- Did you read that link I posted? A thorough examination of the rules seems to indicate otherwise. I’m not an expert, but i’ve heard the case from both sides. I think there are a lot of questions out there, but AU’s compliance dept is probably the strictest in the nation. If they say “play him”, i’m inclined to believe them.

It is time for the NCAA/SEC to clean up and clean house it should start with CAMGATE. If you allege to be religious, a christian, a worthy Heisman candidate and more a BCS CHAMPION you should do it with ethics, courage and hard work and then you receive the reward and no other way! If an ordinary student student were caught stealing, cheating or commiting any illegal/unethical act in university the penalty is severe! It should not be different for a person who is a great athlete just terribly dishonest! It is time for the University of Auburn to explain that tremendous recruiting class that has NEVER happened before just like this BCS run that has never happened before. It is confessed “pay for play” now don’t add to the stupidity of it with more ridiculous tales about how good everyone is when we all know it is a LIE. CLEAN UP FOOTBALL AND THE SEC in every way!! START NOW wth Auburn University and CAM NEWTON. There is a lesson to be learned here that is benenficial to the game of college football. Do the right thing!!! It’s the best and only way to achieve!!!

Bill Stanfill

There are very good reasons for Auburn to bench Cam. Penalties are likely to go beyond forfeiting games, especially if they continue to let him play: loss of scholarships, being banned from appearing in bowls, and more. This could and likely will affect Auburn for the next 1-3 seasons if they play Cam after his father has admitted to soliciting for $ in the recruitment process.

Here’s the relevant info on why ESPN may not have picked up the WSB story:

“A news story Friday night that said a source said Newton’s father discussed money with an ex-Mississippi State football player to have his son play for the Bulldogs had previously been reviewed by people looking into the matter. The fact Newton remains eligible means the people who determine eligibility, at least now, believe neither Auburn nor Cam Newton knew of his father’s dealing with Mississippi State. ”

Also, hooray for more “sources”
