Has Mark Richt run out of steam? (AP photo)
AUBURN, Ala. — On the weekend of Cam-demonium, the Georgia Bulldogs were rendered a footnote. But one snippet of semi-news did emerge Saturday morning, courtesy of the Denver Post: Colorado is apparently interested in Mark Richt to fill its coaching vacancy.
And that might be the best for all concerned: Richt to the Rocky Mountains and a new challenge, Georgia spared a decision no program wants to make. Namely, when and how do you say goodbye to a man who lifted your program but seems incapable of further lifting?
In Year 2 under Gene Chizik, the Auburn Tigers clinched the SEC West by winning Saturday. In Year 10 under Richt, the Georgia Bulldogs fell to 5-6.
Said Bacarri Rambo, the safety: “I never thought the University of Georgia could be 5-6.”
Said Akeem Dent, the linebacker: “That would not make sense to anybody.”
It doesn’t make sense, but it’s grim reality. Georgia was 8-5 last season, its worst under Richt, and it will be worse this time — worse with 10 of 11 offensive starters returning plus a hotshot quarterback making his debut, worse with a $750,000 defensive coordinator hired as a presumed upgrade.
Georgia took a 21-7 lead on the nation’s No. 2 team Saturday, whereupon Todd Grantham’s defense yielded touchdowns on six of the next seven possessions. Yes, Auburn has a great offense, and yes, after days of uncertainty the famous Cam Newton not only played but played beautifully. Still: Had the Bulldog defenders even practiced?
Linebacker Justin Houston on Newton: “He didn’t do anything special.”
Then, asked how Auburn could score seven touchdowns and amass 463 yards: “Blown assignments — that’s what has been going on all season.”
How could a defense still be making mistakes in its 11th game? Have players not yet learned the scheme? Houston again: “I guess not. Some guys are not as focused as they need to be.”
That indictment of Grantham is a greater indictment of Richt. The failing of Georgia this season hasn’t been skill or desire but stamina. Players appear to tire, and even the coaching seems to flag.
Georgia had it going Saturday. The Bulldogs were throwing deep off play-action — Auburn doesn’t play much D, either — and running hard, and then coordinator Mike Bobo ordered a direct snap to receiver Branden Smith that gained nothing on second-and-five and blunted a second-quarter drive. Why throw a change-up when they haven’t hit your fastball?
Soon the game was tied, and Richt lost his nerve. Georgia took the ball at its 21 with 51 seconds left in the half and one timeout remaining. It ran a draw to Caleb King and let time expire, content in the belief that it would take possession to begin the second half.
“I guess we didn’t want to make a crazy mistake,” said A.J. Green, who to that point had caught five passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns against Ted Roof’s overmatched secondary. “We took the safe way out.”
Only it wasn’t safe. Chizik called for an onside kick. Auburn retook the lead without Georgia touching the ball. Richt said he told his kickoff-return squad to be wary of such a maneuver. He also said: “I guess you could only tell them so many times.”
Make no mistake: Auburn was the better team. But Georgia had a chance here, and its coaching failed. Same as in Jacksonville. Same as in Starkville. The same thing, again and again.
Richt on this saddening season: “A few key plays, if they went the other way, we win.” Then: “Teams that win championships win close games. We haven’t won a close game yet.”
For the record, Richt spoke in the same room that housed his triumphant press briefing Nov. 16, 2002, the day Georgia beat Auburn in an excruciatingly close game to clinch the SEC East. There was a time when Richt’s teams were the aggressor throughout, when they made the requisite plays at the end. No longer.
Asked about Colorado, Richt smiled and said: “Georgia is my home.”
Asked about Richt, the newly minted Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said: “I’m really looking forward to working with him.”
And yet you wonder if it will ever get better for Mark Richt at Georgia, if we haven’t already seen his best work. His Bulldogs had a chance to grab the nation’s attention Saturday, and they led by 14 points. They lost by 18.
They got weary. Then they got beat. The same thing, again and again.

My brother called me at halftime and predcited Auburn would onside kick to start the 2nd half. He was right, but our guys didn’t have a clue. Richt should told have those guys up front on their toes but they turned tail and started back down field when Auburn started for the ball.
Grantham’s defense is bad, what can you say. We can’t contain anybody from getting to the corners. The end around was killing us all game long. Nobody can stop Newton so you can’t fault them for that.
Richt has indeed taken us as far as he can, and that was 4 years ago. It’s steadily downhill and this season is the exclamation point. Haven’t beaten anyone with a winning record.
Ask Auburn if replacing Tubebrville was a good decision. Sometimes you have to do what is necessary.

Bradley,
Man you lose credibility when every chance you get you write the same kind of article. This wasn’t the game to act like it was a coaching problem. Cam Newton has torn up everybody and that entire stadium and team were pumped up and mad after the Newton stuff this week. The Dawgs played hard and showed some fight protecting their qb after blatant late hits. If you want to complain after some other games I get it. But every article you write now exposes you to have a personal problem with Richt. I guess Mac Brown and Muschamp and Meyer and his staff can’t coach either.

I hear you, Douglas Dawg. The past two seasons have been trying my faith in the team as well. But even great coaches have down years. Plus, CTG is trying to run a 3-4 with players recruited for the 4-3, so of course the D is going to be shaky. If I remember correctly, Bama went something like 6-6 in Saban’s first year when he started the transition to the 3-4. Didn’t they lose to LA-Monroe or somebody like that that year? All they ended up doing the next year was going to the Sugar Bowl.
There’s a lot of stuff going wrong in Athens that can be put solely on CMR’s head. But I think he’s owed at least one more year to turn things around. If the Dawgs lose more than 3 games next year, it might be time to begin that coaching search.
For now, all we can do is stand by our Dawgs and cheer them on to victory against the bugs in two weeks. GO DAWGS!

UGA is a good team. The ball is not going to bounce our way every single game or season. Furthermore, it’s up to the players on the field to execute the plays called from the sideline. Do you honestly think Grantham and Bobo don’t put in the time studying their opponents and formulating the game plan during the week? If you say no, please look in the mirror because you are a bold faced liar.
Richt is a very good coach. Bradley and Schultz write these Class B articles about getting rid of Richt. Bradley and Schultz were any good, why are they still at the AJC? Why do these idiots continue to live the Georgia? Do you really think ESPN, the New York Times, etc would hire these guys? Hell no!!!!
Bradley, why did you not apply for the UGA Head Coach job when Donnan was fired? Bradley knows how to motivate 18-22 yr old players, formulate an effective game plan that no opposing team can stop, make adjustments during the game, and win 12 + games every season.

look at the 2011 schedule…if we dont go at least 10-2, good bye richt. however, we are a better team then we were in weeks 2 and 3. mike bobo needs 2 go. the nfl needs 2 have a lockout. aj and j houston stays…and we can forget about the misery of this season! i am very dissapointed, but look at the talent we got…and were 5-6??? when would army and northwestern get bowl eligible before us??
and finally, if i could get in them red and black pads, i would crush nick fairly so bad…his thuggish acts and cam newton’s greediness is unacceotable! chizik, get your teams morals right!! (even though uga looks undisciplined at times)

This is one of the stupidest comments I’ve seen. The ultimate cheapshot on a QB in the pocket is hitting them low, especially when he rushing lineman takes 2 steps after the ball is released. That is why it is banned in the NFL. That play in the NFL would have resulted in a $100K fine, ejection and suspension. This is not the first game Farley took cheap shots at the opposing QB. His cheap ass should be suspended by the SEC.

I don’t know what happened, but the last three years your team has sicken and embarrassed the state
of Ga.. Talent level doesn’t matter at UGA, when leadership doesn’t measure up to the talent level.
Do not worry The powers to be will support you so talent level will decend to your level of coaching then you will be able to justify your performance. Just look at all the highly regarded high school players that
are leaving for Tenn, Ala and other places where they may further their level of playing skills

Saba made lots of mistakes at the end of his 1st season with the 3-4 in 2007 at Bama.
Saban lost his last 4 games in a row that year.
Year 1 in the 3-4 is tough, players don’t know what to do, and you don’t have the right players to run the scheme.
Saban went 7-6 in his 1st year with the 3-4 in 2007 at Bama, Richt will go 7-6 too if he wins out.

Folks, take a step back for a minute. How many coaches are there out there with a better winning percentage than Coach Richt? Coaches that have been successful for the past 7or 8 years don’t become stupid overnight. How many other good men are out there who could take over and do better over the long haul? Although we don’t like to admit it, every great program eventually has it’s ups and downs. I think that he should get some leeway in terms of getting things turned around. We have the makings of a great quarterback and a new defensive system that should attract some talent, given that it is more of a pro type system. Hang tough, we’ll be OK.

Richt has not turned UGA into a third tier program….he had a couple recruiting classes that didn’t pan out over a three year period (2006-2008, only 60% made a contribution) which caused the program to slip. However, players such as Stafford and Moreno covered up those deficiencies. Time will tell if progress has been made, but the last two classes look good (Charles, Murray, Ogletree, etc.) GO DAWGS!

Mark Richt lost the team when they charged the endzone against UF in ‘07. He’s weak, and it shows.
And he can’t beat UF. He’s 2-8, including 1-4 against Ron Zook’s three teams (all five-loss seasons) and Urban Meyer’s worst team. That’s enough reason for him to move on in my book.

But I don’t see the need to keep belaboring the same point. Richt will be back at UGA in 2011. If we go 5-6 again, then he’ll be gone. Until then, let’s find something new to talk about.

The only thing anyone other than morons can blame this coaching staff for is recruiting. Everyone claims we have a top ten recruiting class every year. Maybe so. But when the last four years that class is ranked 6th, 4th, 5th, and 4th in conference, it doesn’t much matter. I don’t know exactly what needs to be done. Auburn got one player at a key position and they are undefeated. It’s certainly not the coach who had a BAD losing record at Iowa State, it’s his players. Or in this case, player that makes him look good. How did they get him? I guess we’ll see. You can’t MAKE people come to UGA to play. We can’t move the university to central FL to have nice winter weather and be an hour from the beach. We COULD lower academic standards for admittance to the levels of Ole Miss, Miss St, AUBURN, Alabama and Florida. We also COULD not make such a big deal out of cheating on term papers. We COULD and should make much less fuss over scooter driving infractions. Other than that, I’m not sure what we would do to get better players.
There is one point reasonably good point about coaching stupidity by Fitten at least from the limited knowledge that I have, and that is that Ogletree made mental errors throughout the game. BAD ones. But I would disagree that it is due to coaching. It is due to inexperience. The coaching mistake that was made was to put him in there in the first place. How he took the place of someone with two more years experience is beyond me. Maybe he is better than Hamilton physically, but not mentally.
Anyone who thinks the coaches should be gone are morons who have no life to take pride in other than a game played by 20 year olds. If you would trade coaches with Auburn after the way his team represents his university and after they get all their wins taken away from them you are indeed a moron. Without that ONE player his team is 5-7 on the year and they are trying to ship him back to IA State where he had a BAD losing record. He’s no coach.
Get Muschamp?? Noticed the Texas defense lately? Get Smart? After we play Tech and AL plays Auburn, UGA will be ranked ahead of AL in total defense. The players on the UGA defense suck. AL has a team full of studs. GA has one. Yet you want Kirby to take over? Grantham (and Willie) has done more with less than either one of those guys. This is the first year Spurrier has ever had ANYTHING at Carolina. No one ever calls for him to go. We are lighting the scoreboard up and the idiots on here say we need to replace the guy who calls the plays.
The football coach is arguably the highest profile representative of the University that there is. Higher than Micale Von Adams even. This guy represents MY university the way I want it represented. I do not want it represented the way that Urban does UF or Saban does AL and I sure don’t want to be like Auburn. Those schools seem to do well spelling three letter words like “win” especially recently. But when you move up to 5 letter words like “Class” they have much more trouble in the spelling and no clue in the definition.
Texas fans aren’t calling for Mac Brown and Muschamp to be fired, Carolina fans never called for Spurrier to leave, heck the idiots over at the trade school aren’t even calling for CP Johnson to go and he is CLUELESS at this level. What does that make the UGA fans who constantly belittle this staff? It makes them morons.

The short answer is no. What crystalized the game for me was the onside kick to start the second half. Richt tried that years ago on someone and it worked beautifully. On Urban Meyer several years ago, he got burnt. Today he got burnt again — the players were caught totally by surprise and they were unprepared to deal with it. And don’t forgot how CMR was toasted by VT in the Sugar Bowl on the fake punt. Does he just refuse to think of the possibilities the opposing team has at their disposal to win? The man is simply not ready for what the game throws at him. Opposing coaches have figured this out. Everything Mark Richt does is scripted, and the script is getting dogeared. Some other observations from the game: Why is Rambo still starting? He is a liability and I can’t understand why coaches let him get penalized and abused in the secondary game after game. I thought Evans was bad, but this guy has taken it to a new level. And forget the gift int — my 10 year old could have snagged that one. Will the offense ever figure out how to run a simple screen pass? Aaron Murray is a warrior and I’m glad that thug Auburn player didn’t end up hurting him badly. The SEC needs to do something about that guy. None of the game will matter though — I think Auburn is playing this season at the roulette table — the outcome will happen during basketball season (of 2012.) The wild dawg thing with Branden Smith was a total joke — didn’t fool a soul. The UGA D is past broken and I have no idea what will fix it. Players constantly look confused and out of position. Same sometimes for the offense. More useless time outs today to avoid penalties. When will someone teach Caleb King to block? He wiffed several times today and had Aaron running for his life. The O line is the biggest disappointment this year. I’m glad McGarity gave Richt his stamp of approval. With AJ, Durham, Houston and all the others gone next year I don’t see any way this team improves. If CMR knew what to do, he’d have fixed it by now. Hope I’m wrong.

Pay this group of coaches millions of dollars & you get a team that is 5-6. poor recruiting, poor coaching, poor execution & an overall sense of malaise! this program has been on its way down for three years & I do not believe it has reached the bottom.
UGH! has not beat a team with a winning record. They lost to a TERRIBLE Colorado team. They got BLOWN OUT by Mississippi St … freakin Mississippi State!! They lost to Florida (as usual) & gave up 34 points to them!! Florida scored 6 against Alabama, 7 against Mississippi St & as of this moment, have scord 7 against South Carolina (all of these games were in the swamp).
The UGH defense is TERRIBLE. can’t tackle, no pass rush, no coverage skills & the WORST defensive backs in the country! We have been dooped into paying grantham a huge sum of money for NO RESULTS!
The offensive play calling is hysterical at times. I counted three pass plays tonight where we sent two receivers down into the pattern & they went 40 plus yards down the sides of the field! No other options were available to Murray.
The Offensive line is just that … OFFENSIVE!!! They are terrible! How can these clowns be Juniors & Seniors and be so bad??
I was listening to the call in show has I drove back from Auful & the host (Jeff Danzler) kept saying how our recruiting has been middle of the pack the last 4 years & that “the Bulldogs will rise again.”
I thought both statements were comical. We have a coach who has been in place for 10 years. How could he have let the recruiting drop to middle of the pack?? Furthermore, when you have been somewhere for 10 years, & you have had some success, should you really be looking to “rise again.” After 10 years, one should already be risen!!
This is a poorly run program with too many off field distractions & not enough on field results!!
They lost to COLORADO!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! What a joke!!!!

They wore the Dawgs the down. It was there time. And, who didn’t they score on? I don’t feel bad about this loss or the loss to SC beyond feeling bad for the loss. Both teams were due for a W in the series. Both teams will battle for the SEC championship. Both teams have birds for mascots.
Fairley deserves a square kick in the jimmies. What an A–hole… then again with an 18 point lead and a couple of minutes left, why did a=Auburn have him in the game? It was clear that he was intentionally trying to hurt Murray. I will accept a lot as “part of the game,” but there is a line that was crossed.
Finally, count how many freshmen and sophomores the Dawgs are playing. Look at next year’s schedule. Grantham has only had one season. Richt is taking steps to change the environment. McGarity is a good hire. As frustrating as this season has been at times, there have been some positives. I hope Richt is the guy next season (and beyond).
Predictions: Cam Newton will be in the pros next year. Urban will continue to flounder.
