It’s a new day, but the same story. Or, more precisely, the same story with a new twist. Joe Schad of ESPN.com is reporting that two sources who recruit for Mississippi State claim that Cam Newton, the Auburn quarterback who’s from College Park, and his father Cecil “admitted in separate phone conversations to a pay-for-play plan while Newton was being recruited late last year.”
More ominously for Auburn, Schad reports that Cam Newton called another recruiter to express regret, saying his father had chosen Auburn for him because “the money was too much.”
A tempest has raged around Newton the past week, beginning with ESPN’s original report that the former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond claimed he had been told it would take $180,000 for the player to enroll at MSU. A subsequent report by FoxSports.com contended that Newton had faced charges of cheating while at Florida, prompting angry responses from both Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs and coach Gene Chizik and, in a bizarre twist, a denial from Florida coach Urban Meyer that he had been FoxSports’ source.
But this latest report from ESPN marks the first time the Newtons, father and son, have been linked — even if the link comes via second-hand unnamed sources — to any recruiting malfeasance, and it’s also the first time it has been suggested — even if the suggestion was apparently made by Cam Newton himself — that the family might have received money from Auburn.
And this could change everything. Auburn’s stance to date has been that Newton is eligible to play for the Tigers, but a school cannot allow a player to continue to represent it if his eligibility is at issue. To date it hasn’t been. (The Bond allegations pertained to Mississippi State, not Auburn.) But now it is.
And Auburn, which is ranked No. 2 in both the Associated Press poll and the BCS standings, plays Georgia on Saturday. You’d be well advised to stay tuned.
Still more Cam! Even by SEC standards, this latest tempest is mind-boggling.

Look @ Benjamin taking the checkered flag! I’d like to thank my sponsors…
On a serious note, this Cam Newton story is just another disturbing display to me of the shady underbelly that lurks in college sports these days. I am actually a firm proponent of giving athletes a little bit of money aside from their scholarships to discourage some of this. The NCAA makes millions of dollars off these kids and they can’t afford to take their girlfriends on dates, and meanwhile, snakes come crawling out of the woodwork to leech off them on the other end.
I’m not defending Cam or Reggie Bush or any of the others; I’m just saying the fault goes far beyond them, and they [and the schools] are the ones who take the ultimate fall while these sneaky agents and “representatives” get nothing.

This makes me sad. I honestly believed they were trying to take Cam Newton down, just because he and Auburn are on top. I really thought they should just leave him alone. I wanted the focus to be entirely on the game.
I really hope none of these allegations are true. I was happy that even though UGA’s year is shot, that the SEC has a quality representative this year for the BCS NC.

Yes, it’s the same story all right: the AJC reporting what someone else is reporting. Where is the original reporting by the AJC? What is your justification for this? Are you comfortable that Fox Sports and ESPN.com have the quality of information that you would publish yourself? Seriously, I would like to know the rationale. It does matter, does it not? You could actually do a useful thing by waiting until you do or do not have a solid story. I have a sense that Mr. Bradley isn’t all that comfortable with what he is writing, so maybe the editors need to explain their thinking.

I was hoping that it would all just go away as baseless rumor.
I wanted the UGA/Auburn game to be the focus, be well played and a shining light for college football.
Now it is going to be a weekend filled with rumors and trash being spewed and will take away from what should be a great football game.
I predicted 28-24 auburn. If Newton is allowed to play, he will most likely want to take out his frustrations. UGA’s season has been like that hasn’t it? We are next in line.

Exactly, rx.
Any time you take poor kids from rough areas — and I don’t think Cam applies, but there are a lot of college athletes that do — and wave money under their noses, they’re going to take it; further, I’m not sure I would be able to resist, either.
In part due to the setup that currently exists, these “representatives” sneak into their worlds early and the network extends a broad distance. Something needs to be done to punish the leeches while also giving incentive on the other end to keep kids from just chasing the money.

This latest story shocks me! You know when the NCAA starts snooping around they always find something. They are like the damn IRS. Which could include the mythical NCG.

Can’t AGREE with Ben & RX at all. Graduated from Tech 10 years ago & I realize how tough it is for the AVERAGE JOE to go to college. Its EXPENSIVE & these athletes get a free ride. Couple that with the fact that any of them with the talent of a Cam Newton are guaranteed to earn more money in one year than I could in my lifetime playing in the NFL.

I agree with most of you talking about giving them a little money but it would have to be monitored very closely. Paying them could definately lead to more corruption. The one thing I do not agree with is most of them not having enough money to go on a date with their girlfriends(maybe a few). I went to UGA and had friends at UF, USC, Auburn and Clemson. At every one of those schools football players we always down town spending money in bars. Also have you seen all the tatoos players have. The problem is not the NCAA in general – it is the SEC (well most of the SEC), Oklahoma and to some extent USC. Pretty much every story about boosters/agents throwing money at students athletes has revolved around those schools. Not sure how you fix it when the folks calling the shots at these schools don’t see anything wrong with paying a player – they only get upset when caught (you can be sure a witch hunt for how the information leaked in already in progress).

It’s hard to feel sorry for football players when they are getting their education, books, housing and most food paid for. If they go for 4 years that could easily add up to somewhere near $120,000 or more. So, they are in fact getting paid. They also get clothes, shoes and other stuff. Something just seems out of balance to me…A.J. Green publically sell shis jersey for $1000 – doesn’t hide it, cooperates while the school mandates he sit out games while the NCAA decides his fate….winds up missing a third of his season ( final season) with no ababtement by the NCAA of the penalty after reviewing the circumstances and severity. A.J.’s statistical legacy was damaged as was ( some might say) the outcome of his team’s season (debatable to a small degree). Seems like the NCAA acted pretty quickly in the face of a diabolical scheme by the 19 year old to raise $1000 for spring break – in a public forum. Could AJ have not cooperated and completed the entire season…perhaps – we will never know. BUT….we do know that the circumstances, if only fractionally correct, as they relate to Cam Newton are grossly worse – there can be no comparison. Yet Auburn, gets to complete its wonderful season in tact, even though the SEC supposedly received information regarding the Newton saga in January. These situations just do not sit well with me…maybe its just me.
Finally, can you imagine how certain AJC journalists would be publishing indictments of the UGA program if our state flagship school was involved…need to get past this minor pay-for play story and get back to the serious editorials – those expounding on scooter helmets, speeding tickets and traffic court. Tennessee bar room brawls can’t even measure up to that stuff!

ESPN, ABC, CBS are all the ones that make money off these kids. ESPN and others keep kicking this dead “hear-say” story around. All of these allegations were put in the original report filed with the SEC back in January. ESPN and FOX are just regurgitating the same story from a different angle. Now instead of two has-been MSU players making allegations, it is someone who answers the phones for the MSU recruiting department. Are there any names to these individuals, NO of course not, then you would have a credible article. The NCAA is checking banking statements in an effort to cover themselves in case something were true. If they had hard evidence, Newton would already be sitting the bench.
It sucks that in order for AU to win a national championship, they not only have to navigate the SEC on the field but they have to do it off of the field. Auburn has taken MSU’s and FU’s best shots and has withstood them and will continue to withstand them.
Auburn is not USC, Auburn is not Alabama, AU is not Tennessee, and Auburn is not Auburn of the 70’s and 80’s when schools like Texas and Oklahoma openly paid players. Auburn was on probation and learned how to keep a tight ship. Under Tuberville and Chizik, Auburn keeps a very very tight reign on their athletes.
In this day and age, Athletes get caught for taking money, just ask Reggie Bush. Auburn boosters that would appropriate such behavior are shunned from the Crowd of Auburn Alumni and are not allowed to be around the program.
When Auburn extended a scholarship to Newton, they checked with the NCAA and SEC to see if he was “clean” and “eligible”. Those 2 organizations gave their approval, and as such he is eligible. If some was hidden that Newton did, before attending Auburn, then Auburn would not be in trouble because they went through the correct channels before accepting Newton.
Leave the Kid alone, and leave Auburn alone.

As if on cue. Suppose some people were manufacturing allegations, and the overwhelming media response was that those allegations don’t mean anything. The logical response is to up the ante with allegations that would mean something. Unnamed sources just won’t do it.
Mark, what does it mean that these unnamed sources “recruit for Mississippi State”? Does that mean they’re actually on staff with Miss. State, or that they’re boosters? The former would be more credible witnesses, especially if they would go public. Then the eligibility issues would be for real. Unnamed sources just won’t cut it.
I just can’t believe Auburn would be dumb enough to offer that kind of money to players. Perhaps a private arrangement b/w Cam’s dad and Auburn boosters? His dad’s a pastor. Think how easy it would be just to visit the church and drop a wad of cash in the offering basket, with separate communications specifying what that specific amount of cash was really for.

It’s sad that the Auburn president would not get knee deep in this today, fearing the wrath of the Auburn people for screwing up a miracle season verses holding up the integrity of the University. He ought to meet with staff, hear them out, and have a press conference that these coach’s have given him assurances, based on their jobs at Auburn, and future jobs in NCAA football, that all is above board.

If anyone thinks that the Barners are going to hold Cam out of any games, then you’re not paying attention. This year is Auburn’s best chance for a big splash and maybe a National Championship. Nothing has been proven….plenty of allegations, but no sworn statements, no cancelled checks, no “smoking gun”….yet.
The Chizzler is “whistling through the graveyard” right now. If these allegations are proven to be true, ol’ Gene will deny any knowledge of these events and denounce all who are guilty. Hopefully he has no complicity in any of the pay-for-play dealings…….
Hopefully none of this is true, but the more the Newtons speak, the less credulous they appear.
The cheating scandal is probably true or someone would have been served papers already, but that has nothing to do with his eligibility at Auburn – it just further sullies his credibility.
It is probably going to get worse for Auburn before it gets better.

Did anyone happen to catch the Marcus Dupree story on ESPN 30 for 30? It was openly admitted that after Dupree’s freshman year that the UO bought his momma a brand new double wide trailer. Marcus was getting ready to leave OU and Switzer asked his momma is there anything we can do to get Marcus to stay. His momma said yes, I want a new double wide trailer and it was delivered the next day!! Anyone who doesn’t believe these kind of dirty dealings go on are delusional.
I’m now starting to believe Auburn may be dirty. When Chizik was first hired it was a head scratcher for everyone, including Auburn fans. Then all of a sudden this guy Chizik with no real ties to the south starts recruiting like Bear Bryant out of nowhere. I was a little suspicious of Auburn even before all of this Cam Newton stuff hit the media. The NCCA will soon be down there looking around and when that happens they almost always find something. I think Auburn officials thought everything was ok when they brought Newton to the team. With all the past problems AU has had, they would have had to absolutely make sure Newton was clean and all of the t’s we’re crossed and the i’s dotted. Isn’t all of this second-hand rumor and innuendo right now anyway? I know “where there’s smoke there’s fire” , but has anyone located the fire yet? All I know is a couple of MSU “recruiters” have made some claims, supposedly. Do they work for MSU or are they alumni/boosters? This is all really sad because I was looking forward to a great rivalry game this Saturday but it looks tainted now. What really shocks me is how many infractions he had at Florida before Urban Crier kicked him off the team. That is unbelievable. If this happened in Athens it would have been all over the national media.
Man Florida is good at keeping this stuff under wraps. You Florida fans better knock off the the knocking of Georgia’s issues because it looks like a closer scrutiny may be in order for your program.
As for Cam and his recruitment. If he’s guilty it will come out. Im starting to think Gene Chizik is right from the Pat Dye mold. Auburn found themselves a good one. LOL

Cam or no Cam, UGA is not going into this game scared to played Auburn. We are going for the thumb this year and CMR has no hangups playing Auburn. Auburn has not blown anyone out in the SEC games so UGA will not be an exception. Dawgs may not win but will be in the game in the fourth quarter. The press needs to let Cam alone if there were any truth the NCAA would have suspended him months ago. Just the press trying to bring down another SEC team so they can say our conference is a bunch of Cheaters. Go Dawgs, GATA on Saturday!!

Let him play & I’m a GA fan. The worse that can happen is we will get beat, but I had rather play Auburn with him in the lineup. But to you Auburn Morons who think is is going to be 40-70 for Auburn & only 3-14 for GA, it is not going to happen. Your offense may be that good, but your defense isn’t and we are getting better.

Players should not definitely not get paid. This situation could be resolved with stiff penalties to the “snakes in the grass”.
Plenty of students pay back student loans for years to pay for what these players get for free. Punish the “snakes in the grass” and it will go away.

I see 4 pages of almost universal guilt for Newton here. Personally, I’d like to see one shred of verifiable evidence before I go off and call the man guilty. Past infractions mean nothing to this case. The fact that he attends a school you don’t like doesn’t make him guilty either. Evidence does, and to this point there must not be much, because the NCAA has had this since July and as of yet, nothing.
That being said, if he’s guilty, it doesn’t sound to me that the blame needs to be layed on Cam as much as it does his Father. If this is all true, he’s the real sleeze, and his son is just a by-product of the fathers teachings.

Not one person is willing to go on the record with direct knowledge of anything that would rise to the level of a suspension or penalty against the AU Football program. It’s been a week since the story broke, and 11 months since the NCAA had the story.
Not. One.
Bond has changed his story 3 times now – latest is he never heard Rogers say anything, but got the info from a friend of a friend.
The cheating stuff (again, anonymous, with no documentation) has no impact on his eligibility or Auburn’s enrolling him to play, even if true, and has been completely contradicted in other published reports.
Allegations of Cam and his dad telling recruiters they were paid, even if they did say so, are not nearly the same thing as proving a payoff occurred, or was even solicited. And they are still anonymous sources unwilling to go on the record.
If he did something wrong, let’s get him and the program punished. But enough innuendo – how about some evidence? Put up or shut up.
The football field seems to be the only place where Newton can get judged just on facts – I don’t think I’d like to be Georgia this weekend.

If it is true so what. But I want to know what took this agent or MSU so long to come forth. Is it because Auburn is ranked high and Cam will probably win the Heisman. There is always a underline motive. I have kids that play sports and will have a good chance to play college sports. They should get paid. These kids spend more than 40 HRS a week preparing for the upcoming games every week. The coaches, schools and the NCAA makes a killing. If we the fans make enough fuss about this it will change.

Unfortunately, usually in these cases, “where there is smoke, there is fire”…… too many little things leaking not to have some substance… certainly not a situation that can be ignored… one always hopes that these athletes and their families are smarter than what has been alleged…that to get a good education while playing a sport they love and excel in would be enough; in certain cases, such as Newton, to be able to see the next step of the NFL…..be patient and work through the system to find the real and big money… just another issue too well known of ignorance and greed… I feel that there still is quite a lot of ‘under the table’ benefits going on out there in the world and I think there should be real laws that would punish the ones to put up the benefits… the real sorrow here is that if something is amiss here, there will be a fallout and a lot of ‘honest’ scholarship players and teams stand a chance to be punished for the greed of one family…!!!!
I think that we will see more clearing of the smoke and finding the fire ….real soon…!!!!

SEC jealousy, backbiting and infighting may again be at the core of these allegations, but now that they’re out there, it is foolish and naive for AU’s fans to close their eyes and plug their ears. Prove the allegations wrong and you will be redeemed…it is clear that just like accusing someone of rape, racism, or child molestation, the mere accusation is damaging enough. Ethics? Fraud? Consider, this is a young man with incredible talent. Why shouldn’t he and his familly cash in?
His talent gets him in the door on a 4-year treadmill to a bogus degree, padded with over-crowded classrooms and poorly taught by graduate students, not professors.
And to top it off, if the student-athlete is really good, the university will reap millions in ticket sales, bowl payoffs, television revenue, product endorsements. If the student is unlucky, a knee or other injury could ruin his path to future earnings.

It’s time to pay NCAA players the same as student employees in other positions. Minimum wage isn’t much, and the programs would still make money hand over fist. The next step is to seriously punish players and programs who break the rules, meaning financial and meaningful penalties. The NCAA also needs to seek cooperation from the NFL, for whom they serve as the farm system in football and (especially) basketball.

I attended Auburn as an undergraduate. My parents and siblings graduated from Auburn. I have a graduate degree from Georgia. I have been attending Auburn-Georgia games since that great game in 1959. When the thug, Pat Dye, was at Auburn, I pulled for Georgia. Since Adams and Richt, I pull for Auburn. I have seen Newton play, and he is clearly the best football player I have ever seen, including Bo Jackson and Herschel Walker. If Auburn paid cash for Newton, Auburn, Newton, and Newton’s dad should receive the maximum penalty. There are strange aspects to this whole issue. Both MS State and UF reported alleged infractions after Newton signed with Auburn, not before. I don’t know what to think at this point. It is a sad state of affairs for the SEC and college football. It is sad that high school players sign with a college, expecting big money from the NFL, with no academic goals or interest whatsoever. One partial solution would be to hold athletes to the same admission standards as regular students. Let the rascals and thugs go directly to the NFL, or maybe the NFL should develop a minor league like baseball. At any rate, all of this should have been investigated prior to the season. The timing of it points a finger at Mullen and Meyer.

There are two kinds of college football fans: Those who acknowledge that there is some corruption in every program (including their own) and who hope it is minimal in their own program. The others who think only their rivals and the successful schools are guilty and that their own schools are immaculate. Open your eyes, people, it is better to be enlightened and resigned to compromise than naive and ignorant.

If a regular student can earn money using his talents while he is still in school by getting internships, working part time, etc., and if a regular student can accept gifts from people with impunity, it is flat out absurd that an athlete can’t do the same thing.
It always amuses me when people complain about pro athletes wanting to be compensated for their services and use that as an excuse to say college sports are better. EVERYONE wants to be fairly compensated. The only difference is that in college, where the archaic, plantation-like rules prevent student-athletes from getting their piece of the pie, they have to go under the table to get what they deserve.
College sports are a joke.

Gene: Good post. Nice to see a rational yet still passionate argument. As a university faculty member I agree whole-heartedly that athletes should meet the same standards as all other students. Unfortunately, I have seen too many student-athletes admitted provisionally and allowed to stick around for several years who had neither the inclination nor the intellect to succeed in college. I disagree that they are all ignorant thugs, but they should have been given another reasonable path to the NFL. I blame the NFL and the university leadership for the situation.

Its the “grown” people who are causing this and don’t think Cam or Auburn should have to suffer because some grown jealous person or people see that this kid is having success so now they want to come out with this. If he was playing bad and if Auburn was having a bad season this would not have even been brought up. And some people are really showing their true colors by riding this thing they way they are and already talking about he should not be in the heisman race, lol its very obvious that the people don’t want him to win the heisman. I’m staying out of this mess. I guess it makes sense that if this guy was the top player in JUCO, yet was not heavily recruited, something had to smell rotten about this situation. That’s why I took my chances of trying to win with just solid defense and great special teams.
This really irks me because after this season Gene and company will be at home for the holidays the next few years. That means my good buddy, Nick, will get every top player in Alabama now. Geez, he’s tough enough to beat as it is.
My friend Urban has to be aggravated. He’s trying to get his troops ready for Steve Superior and has this distraction going on. He needed someone to cry on last night so I left film early to take his call.
I shouldn’t even be on here myself right now. I gotta get ready for UL-Monroe and then I got the preacher to deal with. Interesting that I haven’t seen much of the Johnny Rebs on here this season. I think they spent way too much time trying to figure out that a stupid bear should be their mascot. Of course, what is there to do in Oxford anyway.
I really need to be thinking about Arkansas. Noone is talking about them and they are under the radar in the West. They have a heck of a team. Shoot they think they can get in to the Sugar instead of us. I got news for them. The Big Easy is our place.
Oh well let me go spend some time with my hobby as a horticulturalist before I hit the practice field this afternoon.

I agree. First of all, everything to date is just second-hand hearsay with no corroboration. Second, as with Reggie Bush, an NCAA investigation will last for several years.
I also agree with others who have said “where there’s smoke…” My guess is that something shady has gone down, but it may be almost impossible to prove it unless someone involved has a conscience attack, which is unlikely.
Also, if money was paid, you can bet that it didn’t come directly from Auburn, it would have come from a well-heeled booster, and Auburn may not have even been aware of it.
Who knows how this will unfold and how it will be resolved. As Mark says, stay tuned!

As long as we’re just ’spit-ballin’ here…tell us Mark, just how many times are you gonna ‘come full circle’ on this story this week?…whatever the truth is on this it’ll come out. It’s not like politics these days where those in power can simply deny and obfuscate until the media gets tired of asking and moves on. No this is SEC football, it’s way more important that lying about wars and treasury looting, so the ‘truth will out’ one day….and as for young Mr. Newton having withdrawn from Florida rather than getting kicked out, think of it like Georgia’s new Governor having ‘quit’ Congress to run for Guv before they tarred and feathered him for his sucky ethics while in Washington.
Hope the kid does play Saturday and we put an end to this ‘Superman’ crap. After all this is an ‘away’ game in the Georgia-Auburn series – for us that is.

We as SEC Fans all want a representative from our Great Conference to win the BCS Championship, even if it is not “our” school. However we do want a school playing in the game without any form of controversy and issues. Now this situation with Auburn has turned a wonderful story about a player who picked himself up, paid his dues at a JC and made a Heisman run into a major front page story of dirty payoff, cheating and selling the talents of a player. It is true? Is it half-true? It is a vendetta from a school that got jilted? We do not know. We will have to sit back and wait and let the NCAA Gestapo do its investigation.
As most Americans do, we love giving second chances if a person makes a mistake and shows remorse, that has become the American way. We all love the rebound when it turns a bad situation into a success. Does Cameron Newton fit that model? Yes. Does the extra chapters in that story being written now by all the accusations and issues play a role in the story and the forgiveness? Yes. We all want a kid that did something wrong when he was young and dumb to turn a life lesson into a postive.
Now onto Cecil Newton, he just from an observation stand point, from what is being written and reported whether true or not leads one to think he may have had some ulterior motives behind his dealings with various schools, shady characters and associates. As for one, it will be alot harder to forgive a minister, preacher , a grown man for any act that may have financially improved his personal economic situation.
One final thing that is just uncomfortable, there is the NCAA investigating numerous levels of accusations. Anyone who has dealt with the NCAA during an investigation will tell you that 9 out 10 times when the NCAA starts meddling with a player, program, coach, booster or school administrator they find some other issues besides the initial issue brought to their attention.
The folks at Auburn will spin this in a positive manner and will put on some rose colored glasses. The schools outside of Auburn will look at this as a troubling site and will undoubtly be the first ones to rule guilty, that is just the nature of competitive sports. Will this be that 1 out of 10 where the player, school and parent are innocent? Time will tell.
Too many allegations just leaves the this whole scenario not as good of a story as it was only two short months ago when the the Cameron Newton story was being written.

Assuming that Newton will play and isn’t too distracted, I’ll guess Auburn wins it 41-27. UGA simply can’t put up enough points to outscore Auburn.

They dont deserve to represent the SEC West. Let LSU, Alabama, Arkansas or Miss State go. At least they didn’t purchase their starting QB.

If I was Newton’s Father I would go to the media and say that Miss. State had offered me money for Cam to sign and I refused it. I told them that I would not send my kid to a school that would so blatantly break the rules.

I am on record as the way to defend Newton is to let him do whatever he wants from 20 to 20. Then inside the 20 tightned up the D and try to hold them to FG’s. If the Dogs begin to let him spread the field with his Arms and Legs then they are in trouble because #5, #23 and #27 will also be making plays also.
Let him get his yards and stats, but not in the Red Zone.

Cam Newton and Mike Vick – two stupid guys who don’t help the image of their race. Chizik better not play him until and unless his name is completely cleared – it won’t be – He’s a laptop thief and now it’s found out he was caught 3 times cheating in exams at Florida.
He’ll be virtually forgot in 5 years.

An Auburn booster paying a recruit to come to Auburn. Really?! The amazing thing is that this is considered newsworthy. This is nothing new. The first college football game I saw was Auburn V. FSU back in the 1950’s in Tallahassee. Auburn won something like 55 to 0. They were ranked number 1 in the nation. They were subsequently put on probation for (imagine this) boosters paying players to come to to Auburn. But they had a great football team. The only difference now is they are ranked number 2 instead of number 1. Not much has really changed in the last 55 years.
Let’s just play the damn game.

I don’t see anything wrong with what Cam and his father did (if they did it). Only football players that can increase the finances of the schools are recruited. Winning the conference, having a very good record, going to a bowl, etc., are not for pride. They are for making more money for the schools. It’s okay for the schools but not okay for the players and that’s a double standard for doing the same thing.
It could also be retribution for the junk spread about Tim Tebow.

………………How naive. No one said all success is attributed to cheating, but name one NCAA football champ program which has not been cited by the NCAA in either the decade before or the decade after their “success.” And that’s just when they’ve been caught. No one involved in college football with half a brain supposes ANY program is completely clean. Grow up.

All this investigating, personal attacks and bad press to Cameron Newton is expediting the process of Cameron Newton’s NFL career. I know many many Auburn fans who really thought Cameron Newton would stay at Auburn for two years, but realistically you can mark it down he will be on some NFL roster in 2011 and Gus Malzhan will be a head coach at some Division I school in 2011.
The good and bad times at Auburn with The current ensemble will look completely different in the coming years.
As it stands today if you were in Gene Chizik’s shoes would you even consider not playing Cameron Newton for the remainder of the year? If this was you or I in his shoes we would ride that 6 ‘6″ Quarterback until the NCAA or the SEC forced me to put him on the sidelines. Unless someone can prove something or unless Cecil Newton or Cameron make some bonehead statement that immediatley put his eligiblity at risk he is playing now and will be the savior to Auburn football.
However in years to come, if something does come of this situation the Auburn nation will either do one of two things, blame another school or hammer Cecil Newton for using his son. This situation is months or years away from resolution and as it stands now, someone will have to beat Auburn in the next three games(SEC CG included) in order for Auburn not to be in the BCS CG.
Personally to me this has been a bad press year for the entire SEC starting this summer with Agent gate, to Jersey selling, to arrest, to the death of a football player in his prime now this entire Cameron Newton situation.

I’ve seen a lot of hearsay; I’m still waiting for some proof. I expect I’ll be waiting a while.
Of course Chizik will let Newton play. There is absolutely nothing to be gained by not playing him. Imagine the second guessing that would occur if he sits Newton, loses the next 2 or 3 games and the allegations are found to be false.
I believe Newton’s Heisman hopes are gone. However, I told my brother a month ago that I really didn’t think they would award the trophy to someone with Newton’s past problems.
For the people who say the players should be paid: maybe so, but that isn’t the rule that is in place today. You can’t go back and retroactively change the rules that apply.

Georgia fan with a family of Auburn and Alabama fans. I just am bless there are no Florida fans in the family. For that, it makes me wonder how all this stuff about Auburn’s quaterback got started when we are close to the final games and a lot is on the line, for a “certain school” in Florida ? Just saying.
Leave Cam Newton along and let’s play football. Georgia and Auburn is a tradition that is not only “as it should be in sports” but against two outstanding universities.
I hope Georgia beats Auburn . I do admire Auburn’s ability this year to be competing for a possible shot at the SEC Championship and National Championship. After the Georgia game, I personally will be rooting for Auburn against any other team and that’s includes Alabama.
Go Dawgs, War Eagles and Tide……….and the h—- with Florida.

“two sources who recruit for Mississippi State”- What exactly does this mean? Aren’t the only recruiters for a school the coaching staff? Wouldn’t anybody else acting in this capacity be considered a booster? Did MISS State report that there recuiters were in a bidding war for the players services…I mean since we are telling the stories and reporting improper actions. If any of this is founded BOTH schools will be knocking at death’s door with the NCAA….

What’s the problem Mark, do you have too much money on the game. I really can’t wait to see ESPN shelling out major bucks in damage to Cam Newton. Your main source now says that there was NO MENTION OF MONEY and I say to that If you have proof then show it or tell all your sports department to shut the hell up. I hope the Newton’s take a lot of money from you in a lawsuit, I know if it were me, I would OWN ESPN when this is finished. Tell the loser Lou Holtz to drop dead, if he were such a good coach why was he FIRED from his job. He and the rest of the jerks at ESPN don’t know a thing about College Football and nither do you.

Why does ESPN hate the University of Auburn so much, you have never taken Auburn’s side in anything, just like your He said, she said news story. None of it is true and if it were then why have you not given anything to the NCAA investigation? I think that if it were true then Auburn would not have to bench Newton, the NCAA would have done that for them. Why are all of these football teams so worried about Cam Newton, could it be that they are all shooting for position for bowl games. Mark my word, Auburn and Cam Newton are for real and we’ll survive all the MUD SLINGING you can throw at us and we will still beat the hel* out of you. By the time they finish with Georgia and Alabama those two teams might play in the TOLIET BOWL sponsered by Santa Flush.
