It’s a new day, but the same story. Or, more precisely, the same story with a new twist. Joe Schad of ESPN.com is reporting that two sources who recruit for Mississippi State claim that Cam Newton, the Auburn quarterback who’s from College Park, and his father Cecil “admitted in separate phone conversations to a pay-for-play plan while Newton was being recruited late last year.”
More ominously for Auburn, Schad reports that Cam Newton called another recruiter to express regret, saying his father had chosen Auburn for him because “the money was too much.”
A tempest has raged around Newton the past week, beginning with ESPN’s original report that the former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond claimed he had been told it would take $180,000 for the player to enroll at MSU. A subsequent report by FoxSports.com contended that Newton had faced charges of cheating while at Florida, prompting angry responses from both Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs and coach Gene Chizik and, in a bizarre twist, a denial from Florida coach Urban Meyer that he had been FoxSports’ source.
But this latest report from ESPN marks the first time the Newtons, father and son, have been linked — even if the link comes via second-hand unnamed sources — to any recruiting malfeasance, and it’s also the first time it has been suggested — even if the suggestion was apparently made by Cam Newton himself — that the family might have received money from Auburn.
And this could change everything. Auburn’s stance to date has been that Newton is eligible to play for the Tigers, but a school cannot allow a player to continue to represent it if his eligibility is at issue. To date it hasn’t been. (The Bond allegations pertained to Mississippi State, not Auburn.) But now it is.
And Auburn, which is ranked No. 2 in both the Associated Press poll and the BCS standings, plays Georgia on Saturday. You’d be well advised to stay tuned.
Still more Cam! Even by SEC standards, this latest tempest is mind-boggling.

Really Bradley? You have no problem doing a story based on “second hand unnamed sources”. What journalism school did you go to?

I don’t expect a welder, a plumber, or a car mechanic to have a college degree, though I admire and depend on all of them to be skilled, intelligent, and ethical in their craft. Why should we expect professional athletes to be college graduates and why do we attach a moral superiority to attending college? Isn’t it sufficient that they be skillful, diligent, and ethical at their craft, too?

I personally am tired of all the junk around college football recruiting. I for one would be pleased as punch if all athletic scholarships were a banned and college athletics would return to the realm of the STUDENT athlete. Of course that would ruin the NFL’s traning grounds and think of all the TV money that would go out the window so I know I’ll never see it in what little time is left in my lifetime.

The Auburn Boogereaters are REALLY upset.
They might even skip watching Walker, Texas Ranger tonight in order to catch the news.
The sad part is Auburn would pay a kid $200,000 to play football AND ignor his academic cheating at UF too! I can understand why he had to cheat at UF since it is a real academic university.
Momas, don’t send your sons and daughters to Auburn. Send them to college instead.

Auburn and Chizik have no choice at this point in the season and process but to go “all in” in supporting Newton. Their best hope is that the NCAA and other investigating bodies can not prove the allegations (true or not) and any wins/championships/bowl money they gain will not be vacated or refunded.

The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibit’s the pursuit of excellence with integrity. He may, or may not be guilty, but his intergrity is in question, and Heisman voters will have to decide if they want to vote for someone who’s intergrity has been discredited.

The NFL and their Players’ Association could care less about the morality or ethics of their players, so Newton would have no problem at the next level, even if he is guilty. Think about that next time you shell out 60-120 bucks for an NFL ticket, folks.

The NCAA and the university presidents generally could care less about the morality or ethics of their athletics programs (as long as they generate revenue) so think about that next time you cut a check to ol’ alma mater. Better to specify that it goes to purely academic pursuits.

Now where the NFL may begin to care a little is after the meetings coming up with McKay and others. If the NCAA,NFL and the Players Union can reach an understanding it would possibly suspend players who violate there NCAA eligibility by contact with Agents or improper benefits for the first 6-8 games of there NFL Rookie seasons. This may get some Players attention.

All of you are missing the point. If this kid is guilty (and where there’s smoke, there’s fire), he needs to be ruled ineligible immediately and Auburn forfeit their games. The real disservice would be to the SEC (having to vacate the SEC championship should Auburn win it) and the team (TCU, Boise State, LSU) that has to watch the BcS “championship” game only to find out later that Newton shouldn’t have been playing to begin with.
Hundreds of student athletes shouldn’t be punished for this idiot’s mistakes…

The NCAA has no credibility. If Auburn weren’t 10-0, in the hunt for the SEC championship and the BCS Title game, we aren’t even having this conversation. How is it players from Bama, UGA, NC and SC are ineligible pending the NCAA’s investigation and Auburn’s isn’t. How stinky is this?

This is some bull man. And its sad on the people who are behind this to now try to go out public and make these accusations. Its the “grown” people who are causing this and don’t think Cam or Auburn should have to suffer because some grown jealous person or people see that this kid is having success so now they want to come out with this. If he was playing bad and if Auburn was having a bad season this would not have even been brought up. And some people are really showing their true colors by riding this thing they way they are and already talking about he should not be in the heisman race, lol its very obvious that the people don’t want him to win the heisman. Its a shame man and much as you don’t want to bring it up, its another race issue.

I’m staying out of this mess. I guess it makes sense that if this guy was the top player in JUCO, yet was not heavily recruited, something had to smell rotten about this situation. That’s why I took my chances of trying to win with just solid defense and great special teams.
This really irks me because after this season Gene and company will be at home for the holidays the next few years. That means my good buddy, Nick, will get every top player in Alabama now. Geez, he’s tough enough to beat as it is.
My friend Urban has to be aggravated. He’s trying to get his troops ready for Steve Superior and has this distraction going on. He needed someone to cry on last night so I left film early to take his call.
I shouldn’t even be on here myself right now. I gotta get ready for UL-Monroe and then I got the preacher to deal with. Interesting that I haven’t seen much of the Johnny Rebs on here this season. I think they spent way too much time trying to figure out that a stupid bear should be their mascot. Of course, what is there to do in Oxford anyway.
I really need to be thinking about Arkansas. Noone is talking about them and they are under the radar in the West. They have a heck of a team. Shoot they think they can get in to the Sugar instead of us. I got news for them. The Big Easy is our place.
Oh well let me go spend some time with my hobby as a horticulturalist before I hit the practice field this afternoon.
It makes you wonder...

I agree. First of all, everything to date is just second-hand hearsay with no corroboration. Second, as with Reggie Bush, an NCAA investigation will last for several years.
I also agree with others who have said “where there’s smoke…” My guess is that something shady has gone down, but it may be almost impossible to prove it unless someone involved has a conscience attack, which is unlikely.
Also, if money was paid, you can bet that it didn’t come directly from Auburn, it would have come from a well-heeled booster, and Auburn may not have even been aware of it.
Who knows how this will unfold and how it will be resolved. As Mark says, stay tuned!

As long as we’re just ’spit-ballin’ here…tell us Mark, just how many times are you gonna ‘come full circle’ on this story this week?…whatever the truth is on this it’ll come out. It’s not like politics these days where those in power can simply deny and obfuscate until the media gets tired of asking and moves on. No this is SEC football, it’s way more important that lying about wars and treasury looting, so the ‘truth will out’ one day….and as for young Mr. Newton having withdrawn from Florida rather than getting kicked out, think of it like Georgia’s new Governor having ‘quit’ Congress to run for Guv before they tarred and feathered him for his sucky ethics while in Washington.
Hope the kid does play Saturday and we put an end to this ‘Superman’ crap. After all this is an ‘away’ game in the Georgia-Auburn series – for us that is.

SEC Fact Checker

We as SEC Fans all want a representative from our Great Conference to win the BCS Championship, even if it is not “our” school. However we do want a school playing in the game without any form of controversy and issues. Now this situation with Auburn has turned a wonderful story about a player who picked himself up, paid his dues at a JC and made a Heisman run into a major front page story of dirty payoff, cheating and selling the talents of a player. It is true? Is it half-true? It is a vendetta from a school that got jilted? We do not know. We will have to sit back and wait and let the NCAA Gestapo do its investigation.
As most Americans do, we love giving second chances if a person makes a mistake and shows remorse, that has become the American way. We all love the rebound when it turns a bad situation into a success. Does Cameron Newton fit that model? Yes. Does the extra chapters in that story being written now by all the accusations and issues play a role in the story and the forgiveness? Yes. We all want a kid that did something wrong when he was young and dumb to turn a life lesson into a postive.
Now onto Cecil Newton, he just from an observation stand point, from what is being written and reported whether true or not leads one to think he may have had some ulterior motives behind his dealings with various schools, shady characters and associates. As for one, it will be alot harder to forgive a minister, preacher , a grown man for any act that may have financially improved his personal economic situation.
One final thing that is just uncomfortable, there is the NCAA investigating numerous levels of accusations. Anyone who has dealt with the NCAA during an investigation will tell you that 9 out 10 times when the NCAA starts meddling with a player, program, coach, booster or school administrator they find some other issues besides the initial issue brought to their attention.
The folks at Auburn will spin this in a positive manner and will put on some rose colored glasses. The schools outside of Auburn will look at this as a troubling site and will undoubtly be the first ones to rule guilty, that is just the nature of competitive sports. Will this be that 1 out of 10 where the player, school and parent are innocent? Time will tell.
Too many allegations just leaves the this whole scenario not as good of a story as it was only two short months ago when the the Cameron Newton story was being written.
