It’s a new day, but the same story. Or, more precisely, the same story with a new twist. Joe Schad of ESPN.com is reporting that two sources who recruit for Mississippi State claim that Cam Newton, the Auburn quarterback who’s from College Park, and his father Cecil “admitted in separate phone conversations to a pay-for-play plan while Newton was being recruited late last year.”
More ominously for Auburn, Schad reports that Cam Newton called another recruiter to express regret, saying his father had chosen Auburn for him because “the money was too much.”
A tempest has raged around Newton the past week, beginning with ESPN’s original report that the former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond claimed he had been told it would take $180,000 for the player to enroll at MSU. A subsequent report by FoxSports.com contended that Newton had faced charges of cheating while at Florida, prompting angry responses from both Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs and coach Gene Chizik and, in a bizarre twist, a denial from Florida coach Urban Meyer that he had been FoxSports’ source.
But this latest report from ESPN marks the first time the Newtons, father and son, have been linked — even if the link comes via second-hand unnamed sources — to any recruiting malfeasance, and it’s also the first time it has been suggested — even if the suggestion was apparently made by Cam Newton himself — that the family might have received money from Auburn.
And this could change everything. Auburn’s stance to date has been that Newton is eligible to play for the Tigers, but a school cannot allow a player to continue to represent it if his eligibility is at issue. To date it hasn’t been. (The Bond allegations pertained to Mississippi State, not Auburn.) But now it is.
And Auburn, which is ranked No. 2 in both the Associated Press poll and the BCS standings, plays Georgia on Saturday. You’d be well advised to stay tuned.
Still more Cam! Even by SEC standards, this latest tempest is mind-boggling.

Ryan Mallet might be 1st, and most likely the BIlls are thinking Luck or Mallet, not Luck and Locker. Of course Fitz has been looking decent, so maybe the Bills make a mistake and not take a QB.

If Auburn gets the death penalty, I think Mike Slive needs to get Texas A&M in the offseason. Then when Auburn comes back, add a 14th team. That allows for a few years to figure out who the 14th team would be.

If it is true so what. But I want to know what took this agent or MSU so long to come forth. Is it because Auburn is ranked high and Cam will probably win the Heisman. There is always a underline motive. I have kids that play sports and will have a good chance to play college sports. They should get paid. These kids spend more than 40 HRS a week preparing for the upcoming games every week. The coaches, schools and the NCAA makes a killing. If we the fans make enough fuss about this it will change.

Unfortunately, usually in these cases, “where there is smoke, there is fire”…… too many little things leaking not to have some substance… certainly not a situation that can be ignored… one always hopes that these athletes and their families are smarter than what has been alleged…that to get a good education while playing a sport they love and excel in would be enough; in certain cases, such as Newton, to be able to see the next step of the NFL…..be patient and work through the system to find the real and big money… just another issue too well known of ignorance and greed… I feel that there still is quite a lot of ‘under the table’ benefits going on out there in the world and I think there should be real laws that would punish the ones to put up the benefits… the real sorrow here is that if something is amiss here, there will be a fallout and a lot of ‘honest’ scholarship players and teams stand a chance to be punished for the greed of one family…!!!!
I think that we will see more clearing of the smoke and finding the fire ….real soon…!!!!

Leave it to you to write a column dragging mud into a story and acting like a sleazy National Enquirer reporter. You and most of the rest of the sports media are so excited and thrilled that you have something to report that is controversial and negative. Do you know why you and other sports media people talk about stuff like this, Brett Favre and other things like it? Because you don’t know enough about sports in general to speak intelligently about it. Still waiting for those personal attacks on Paul Hewitt to start from you.

How do you know when *so many things are leaking out* that it’s from many different sources?
How do you know it’s not one group, one individual or one organization that is leaking things here, there and everywhere?
How do you know it’s not one person set out to destroy another person or another organization?
The answer is, you do NOT know.
And if you believe it hook, line and sinker without a shred of evidence, then you’ve swallowed the Kool-Aid. Just like the *source* and the unscrupulous media wanted you to.

I, for one, hope all the truth comes out soon and not take years like it did for Reggie Bush and USC. Cam Newton sinking the Auburn football program could not happen to a better institution. Anyone in the metro area who thinks Auburn fans are good people has never had to interact with them away from metro Atlanta.

Cam Newton and his father need to shut up, lawyer up, and stay out of the spotlight. Every time the Newton’s speak they sound more guilty. If there is no truth in the allegations, then he should have said that, directly and clearly. Instead, they just say that they are not going to say anything. For that matter, CGC is beginning to sound shrill in defending his star. I have no animosity towards AU or Newton, but his best play is to just play.

I hope the allegations and rumors are false, and if they are then the sources should be prosecuted fully and sued mercilessly. The problem is that the response by the Newtons is weak and only fuels legitimate inquiry. From Coach GC’s unequivocal statements, either Auburn is unaware of any wrongdoing (maybe an anonymous booster involved?) or he has just given his own exit interview.

So if a UGA player misses his traffic court date, it’s the END OF THE WORLD and UGA is a THUG PROGRAM and an OUT-OF-CONTROL DISGRACE. But now “Six-Fig” Newton is being investigated by the NCAA for accepting obscene amounts of money to play football at Auburn, and the media can’t jump on the sword fast enough to defend this guy? I thought TB had lost his marbles a few weks ago when he called for the public tar-and-feathering of CTG, but this is ridiculous. Take the rest of the season off, AJC, and let the real pros cover it.

So how much did Auburn University pony up to purchase Cam Newton for all of those spoiled children at Auburn who think college is a football team with a school attached?
And lets not forget all of those fat rear ended fried chicken eating (with potato salad of course) Auburn fans stuffed into their Auburn shirts waiving their pom poms before they go home to their double wides in Pukeville, AL.
It’s so great that we have football to make us feel good about ourselves because we are all such losers.

I will say it again, I hope Newton and AU are clean. But as an outsider I can say that AU fans can still be supportive and be realistic in looking at the situation. SEC jealousy, backbiting and infighting may again be at the core of these allegations, but now that they’re out there, it is foolish and naive for AU’s fans to close their eyes and plug their ears. Prove the allegations wrong and you will be redeemed…it is clear that just like accusing someone of rape, racism, or child molestation, the mere accusation is damaging enough. Especially accusing a Heisman candidate and conference championship contender in the post-Bush era.
