The Cam Newton Saga: Even by SEC standards, it’s bizarre

There’s no tempest like an SEC tempest, the scope of which can be breathtaking. Only in this conference could Alabama’s signing of a lineman from Memphis lead to Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer being served with a subpoena at the league’s Media Days. Only here could a night out in Pensacola, Fla., lead to Mike Price being fired by Alabama before coaching a game. Only the SEC could spawn the feel-good-gone-bad tale of Cameron Jerrell Newton.

He’s a quarterback from College Park who played at Westlake High. He signed with Florida, where he served as understudy for the sainted Tim Tebow. Newton left to attend a junior college in Texas, where he played for Brad Franchione, whose father Dennis used to coach Alabama and whose abrupt departure for Texas A&M led the Tide to hire, albeit briefly, Mike Price. (Nobody does connections like the SEC.)

Newton wound up enrolling at Auburn, where he’s considered the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy. His team ranks second in both the Associated Press poll and the BCS standings and can clinch the SEC West by beating Georgia on Saturday. All of this is, however, subject to change.

Last week ESPN and the New York Times reported that former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond had been informed it would cost $180,000 for Newton to commit to MSU. (This John Bond, not to be confused with Georgia State offensive coordinator John Bond, was the quarterback at Valdosta High after Buck Belue and John Lastinger, both of whom went on to greater glory at Georgia. At MSU, the Valdosta product was known as “One-Hop Bond” for his aerial accuracy.)

Bond has dropped from sight — the celebrity Web site TMZ reports that the FBI wishes to speak with him — but not before granting an on-air audience to Belue, his fellow Valdosta alum, on 680 The Fan in which he undercut his own story by suggesting he hadn’t spoken with the intermediary named in the initial reports. (To which we say: Huh?)

Auburn was quick to assert that Newton was fully eligible to play for the Tigers, whom he led to a 62-24 victory over Chattanooga last weekend. Afterward he told reporters: “When God be blessin’, the devil be messin’.” (Newton’s father Cecil is the pastor of the Holy Zion Center of Deliverance in Newnan, which, as the New York Times helpfully informed us, has only recently been restored to city building codes.)

We pause here for breath, for our tangled tale has only begun. This week FoxSports.com reported Newton had been accused of cheating while at Florida. (While a student in Gainesville, Newton was also charged with three felony counts involving a stolen laptop that was subsequently tossed out a window. The charges were dropped after he underwent pretrial diversion.)

This cheating revelation, attributed to an unnamed source, immediately led Florida coach Urban Meyer to issue a statement saying nobody connected with the Gators had done the leaking. On cue, Auburn coach Gene Chizik dismissed all allegations as “pure garbage” and wondered, in what seemed a clear reference to Meyer and Dan Mullen, the former Florida assistant who’s now head coach at Mississippi State: “Is there a wizard behind the curtain? Is there one? Is there two?”

In all of this, the overarching question has been: If it was going to take $180,000 for Newton to play for Mississippi State, did he really enroll at Auburn for free? On Tuesday ESPN became the first outlet to address that issue, reporting that two unnamed Mississippi State recruiters were informed in separate phone conversations with Cam and Cecil Newton that the player’s services were indeed for sale.

One recruiter, according to ESPN, maintained the elder Newton said it would take “more than a scholarship” to land his son. Another source said Cam Newton expressed regret after his father chose Auburn for him, saying, “The money was too much.”

And that’s where we are, our story nowhere near its conclusion. If Auburn has reason to believe there’s a chance Newton’s recruitment wasn’t aboveboard, will it bench him for the Georgia game and risk losing the division title it’s so close to winning? (Chizik asserted on a teleconference Wednesday that Newton would start against the Bulldogs.) Does the SEC, shuddering over the possibility of its championship game matching Auburn and Chizik against Florida and Meyer, intercede? Does the NCAA? The FBI?

And what of Georgia, which needs one victory in its final two games to become bowl-eligible? Could the underwhelming Bulldogs face Georgia Tech without quarterback Joshua Nesbitt, who broke his arm against Virginia Tech, and Auburn without Newton? If so, wouldn’t that make Mark Richt the luckiest man alive?

And what of us? What does it say when we pay so much attention to games purportedly played by amateurs after being reminded so often that college football is as pure as the driven sludge? Does that make us hypocrites? Or merely fools?

Feel free to answer, but I’m not sure I want to know.

The SEC needs to change:

(1) Kick out Vandy and Mississippi State. They do NOT fit the SEC profile: Vandy uses students as players, and Mississippi State doesn’t even TRY to cheat in recruiting.
.
(2) Withdraw from FBS College Football. There’s nothing “college” at all about the SEC.

(3) Start their new NFL “minor league” by making public and equalizing the SEC Salary Cap. Some years, it really IS hard to tell whether ‘Bama or Arkansas is paying the higher salaries.

(4) Ignore, … or even promote … the ridiculous number of player arrests from these teams. The Fulmer Cup could set up new rules to say that it is NOW exclusive to SEC teams. No use in letting amateurs compete for an award for which the SEC teams have demonstrated such dominance and professionalism.

(5) Withdraw from NCAA and let the players sign endorsement deals. There’s no reason that A.J. GREENbucks shouldn’t be able to eBay his jersey for a few thousand bucks.

(6) Have one redeeming program that the players must contribute too. Since SEC players don’t take school seriously, they should be required to document community service hours (since they don’t log any real academic hours majoring in profoundly meaningful studies like “Social Awareness”). NOTE: This should be in ADDITION TO the community service hours they’re assigned after their arrests and convictions.

Seriously, the SEC should just give up the charade of “college” football and become what they really want to be: The NFL minor league.

This stuff has been going on for years. Now, since we live in a 24/7 news cycle, can these things be brought to light. It’s basic economics. The supply of superior talented athletes is small. The demand is through the roof. No wonder they get paid under the table. It’s not even illegal to pay these people. This is basic capitalism 101. It’s sad, but as long as, the PapaJohns.com bowl president is making over 600k to put on a bowl game of two 7-5 teams money will rule the world. This should be shocking to no one.

So much of this does not make sense. Why would Miss. State admit that they still pursued Cam Newton after saying in Jan. they were asked for money? Other schools (Oklahoma for one) that pursued him had no one contact them about money? Nor did Auburn. From “sources” we hear Auburns records had no contact with Mr. Rogers nor any agent.
Could the money problem Cam Newton mentioned be that Auburn is only two hours for his family to come see him and Starkville would have been across two states? Certainly, not easy to see him play.
Could it be that Urban Meyer was so mad and jealous he panned out to be a great quarterback sour grapes? He is reported he called the New York Times.
Could it be some Alabama fan is paying for this info?
Have you ever seen so many articles with “unnamed sources” in them?
He certainly doesn’t look like he has money nor his family. He rides a scooter in college.. not a fancy car or even a car. He mentors kids in need of help in the right direction.
Are we saying that the kid has not been a model student since coming to Auburn? From all accounts he has.
Are people like you just in need of a story and want to tarnish a kid for the rest of his life.
I bet you have done things in your past too.
Kids can be stupid and they can change.
I hate to see all this negative reporting to a kid from all accounts who is trying to do good.

The game is great. The game matters. Which leads to continuously rising stakes. And when that’s the case, folks take shortcuts. When you have a construct where stakes/interest are crazy high and the participants are not paid … what is the fastest shortcut? Paying a better player to be on your team. And when many of these kids who do not come from much and they see all this money going to every one involved but them, it is hard to not be swayed. Auburn has to play Camzilla. There’s nothing to be gained by not playing him. If he’s dirty, they’ve already played 10 games with an ineligible player. If he’s clean….or at least clean enough to be eligible at Auburn, then they carry on with their quest for the Crystal Ball.

Mark, my opinion; boosters paying for players does happen, but not often. Boosters would much rather give a job to a qualified parent to relocate and place their athlete in the particular school of choice (the boosters alma mater) Most of the time, it is “out of touch” parents or some type of relations, that is actually trying to shop the athlete. Follow the money trail and there in is the truth. So don’t be surprised to see a large “love offering” (financial donation) to the church where Papa Newton is the pastor. Once the donation goes thru the “church” a 501c3 entity; the money is clean.

All they are trying to do right now is tarnish his name so he wont win the Heisman, he wont be suspended or kicked from the school because he hasn’t done a damn thing wrong. Once you say something like that about a player it will make people’s minds wander even without solid proof of anything actually happening. As for community service… Cam Newton went to the local elementary school in July to ask a teacher if she would let him come once a week to read with the kids and has been every week this fall. And to “Roll Tide”, I know of a player whom I played football with and who also lead your defense last year and is now at Oakland, who’s mother couldn’t afford a car for herself or a house and while her son was at Bama he drove a 2009 Yukon which was in his uncle’s name who’d apparently gotten a loan from a bank in tuscaloosa. This Yukon was impounded while “linebacker” let someone else drive it and the uncle didn’t have fifty dollars to get it out. The “linebacker” proceeded to total another players’ 2007 maxima.. the other players’ older brother told me the booster club took care of it. Oh and one more thing the linebacker wrecked a $9000 motorcycle which he couldn’t have bought and also carried no less than $3000 in cash on him when he went out on the town. All this and they didnt even pay to recruit him, just to be a player.

SEC Fact Checker

November 10th, 2010
3:02 pm

With all the various reporting Precints in and around the SEC, I have a couple of questions that have yet to fully answered, could Mark or someone answer them for me?

Did (as reported by one of our fine SEC newspapers reported) did Cameron Newton ever sign up for classes at MSU before the beginning of spring semester?

How many current schools in the SEC that offered Cameron Newton a scholarship had a conversation with Cecil Newton concerning what it would take to get Cameron to attend and play for their football team?

Did Cecil Newton not only send his personal bank records to the NCAA, did he send the bank records from all 5 churches he oversees and manages to the NCAA? The reason I ask that is anyone familiar with Politics knows that the way to hide money is to give it to a church or religious institution.

I hope this works out for Cameron, but if Cecil is the one who has benefited he needs to pay the price for shopping a player. He is no better than the so called “agent” who purchased AJ Green’s jersey, or the clown behind the SEC Agent gate scenario.

The entire situation is starting to look more bleak each passing day for Cameron Newton and it looks from the outside and the uninformed that Cecil Newton may have cashed one too many checks to secure a football future for his son.

The only hypocrites are those in the NCAA. They have an iron clad monopoly on high school football players and they exploit that to the highest possible level.

If Newton got $250k to play for Auburn more power to him; I’d take it if I were him.

However, the stolen laptop is bad. He was likely stealing from a fellow poor student. That’s bad and not easily forgiven.

Mike

Well, this is huge. I’m not going to say people don’t change, but Newton appears to have a history of questionable character decisions. The laptop incident, cheating, and then basically covering that up when talking about why they left Florida is just not good. Does that mean he automatically offered his services for money? No. But it shows a recent pattern of bad decisions.

If these allegations are true, this is far beyond Newton and the Auburn faithful. LSU would be the one sitting at #2 and in control of the West if not for a loss to Auburn. How about South Carolina who would have the East wrapped up if not for a loss to Auburn? How about Arkansas who would be one win against LSU away from winning the West if not for a loss to Auburn? And yes, a loss for UGA against Auburn would mean they might not make a bowl game.

Surprisingly, this investigation has been going on with Newton and the NCAA for 10 months. The NCAA just didn’t want to deal with it I think. They would rather go after simple slam dunk cases like AJ Green or the UNC kids. The Newton case however involves major money and lots of tentacles that will make the NCAA and the SEC look very bad. I wouldn’t say they tried to sweep this one under the rug I think they just prayed the season would end and Newton would move on to the NFL. This is going to turn out now to be another Reggie Bush type dragout that lasts for years.

This is the most rediculous situation in the history of the SEC. All the other schools are drooling and laughing and the fact of the matter is none of them have clean hands. Not even the Saintly one Mark Richt. I heard that the year Stafford came in that that incoming class set an all time record for money that it cost at UGA. So there, there’s you a rumor to chew on. Point is, the gang piling on Auburn and the Newton’s right now would never have seen the light of day if he hadn’t turned out to be a good QB. If he’s been like Reggie Ball everybody around the league would have loved him. I hope he suits up Saturday, I hope he hangs 60 on Georgia. I hope he wins the National Championship and comes back next year to reapeat. Chew on that Dawgs, Gators, Tigers and every other kind of animal that slithers in the SEC.

So far, we have “unnamed sources” and a willing media that is running with a story. Who cares if he cheated at UF? He went to Blinn and did what he had to to get back in the good graces of academia. It’s hypocritical for the UGA/Bama/UF faithful to go after this kid. When you live in a glass house, you shouldn’t throw stones…

Get someone ON RECORD before trying to make me believe this junk. And I’m not even an Auburn fan. SEC fans are insane.

I love college football, and after closer examination of this case, I am ashamed of that. The NCAA has a flawed system that allows everyone but the athletes to benefit financially from college football. Some of these kids, and that is what they are, come from poverty situations. Once at school, they can practice, attend class, study, eat meal plan food and play football on Saturdays. Why not give athletes a stipend? The amount could have a floor and a ceiling, and could be determined by parents’ income and grades. What we ask of them is unfair.
I hope and pray that the Cam drama turns out to be nothing but sour grapes, and I wish him the best, wherever he goes and whatever happens.

After watching the 30-for-30 story on Marcus Dupree, I don’t think there should be any doubt that it takes considerable cash and gifts to get any major recruit to a university. And Dupree was 30 years ago when college football wasn’t nearly as big of a moneymaker as it is now.

This goes for any university – at least on the FBS level. Somehow I don’t think D-III St. John’s (MN) is paying any dollar for players.

Back to Newton, I’ve heard the FBI portion from a source that isn’t TMZ.

Even as a UGA fan, I see much of this Cam Newton flap as being adversary-generated and media-enhanced. If we could pull the cloak off of all the various rumors, my bet is that they would each trail back to an SEC school, alum or booster. If we could open the hood and look at the engine, we would see that it was powered by ESPN and every other sports network and many of their pundits.

This is a money-making crap-stir that’s going on… and Auburn being one of the so-called ‘lesser’ SEC schools, there’s not a huge nation to rise up and fight it off. It is the perfect BS storm.

Mark –
Nice factual blog. The whole rush to judgement, anonymous sources, 24/7 coverage, etc. is not just confined to sports. You see similar things in politics. It seems to quickly result in people lining up on different sides of the issue (following their preset opinions) with an aversion to keeping an open mid.
There are a couple of other aspects of the Newton issue that you left out that could be interesting in the long run. According to the reports, Bond told MSU about the approach from Rogers (or whoever the middleman was) sometime in December 2009 or January 2010 and MSU reported it to the SEC at that time. Presumably they were following Slive’s “no one tattles on each other” rule.
Did the SEC office inform the NCAA in a reasonable period of time or did they try to bury it?

Sleaze is hardly a new thing in the SEC, especially UGA.

All of you UGAers get your heads out of the sand or wherever you have them
stuck and start worrying about the number one problem with UGA. At the rate
your athlete-thugs are being arrested, you’ll be lucky to have any football team by the end of the season.

UGA has made the state a laughingstock with its reputation as one big party
school with copious job opportunities for bail bondsman, and decent people are fed up with this. Get rid of the illiterate, undisciplined drunks and felons that Mark Richt recruits, and get rid of Richt too. November 10th, 2010

Since this situation has become the 2010 VERSION of Reggie Bush Redux, we will say what most folks are thinking, and the Auburn nation will sooner or later have to face the facts that someone in their “family” paid to the family of NEWTON in some or some fashion monies. These monies were paid to the church or churches in lieu for playing football at the University of Auburn. The second thing is this and it is going to hurt….Gene Chizik knows and approves the payment, whether or not he can be tied to it is not going to matter. There was someone somewhere who came to Gene Chizki and said he could get this 6 and half foot quarterback to come to Auburn and he was onboard.

The Auburn family can forget about the brother playing football with the Jacksonville Jacguars as the source of money to repair any church in Newnan, Gene Jr. made $300,000.00 from the day after the draft in 2009 until he was cut in 2010. The purchased Gene Jr. made offset any form of major gift to the church unless Gene Sr. was acting as his agent also and took a major cut of his money.

The facts are Cameron Newton was treated like a celebrity from the day he signed at UF up until today. One can assume that from the time he left UF as he was going to be either suspended from school or kicked out for cheating up until the day he was signed, he or his daddy were told if he kept his nose clean he would be taken care of and get paid to sign with a major school. It looks like the folks at MSU were the ones who go screwed over and they were outbid by Auburn.

Folks, somebody got paid. We all know this case is just one of many many that happen everyday in the Big World of College Football. Every school pays somebody whether the adminstration knows it or not, some parents are promised jobs, some donations, some others receive various gifts, if you do not believe it then you live in a fantasy world.

Gene Chizik is too invested in this season and he and every Auburn fan knows that without Cameron Newton and his athletic ability that Auburn is at best a 5-5 football team. Any diversion or change in the system or support at Auburn leads directly to a self admission of guilt.

This situation stinks and anyone without blinders on can see this kid was treated with soft gloves throughout his career and when the spot light hits you it does not only reflect your great qualities, it also magnifies your flaws and shortcomings.

Also today on XM radio Dan Mullen stated “The truth of the situation is, the people that need to know the truth, know the truth.” This was in response to a question as to whther Cam and his family were seeking a payment. Know matter what is being printed or made of it, unless you are and Auburn Fan this some funny times to be on the outside looking in at an Auburn program who fired a winning coach, that took over a probationed program and won, then hired a coach who could not win at Iowa St. Now Iowa St. is winning and has won more games in one year than Chizik won in two at Iowa St. Chizik knew he had to win and win in a hurry as he was considered a bad hire even by the Auburn people. He brought in a gun slinger in Malzhan and he know Gus is gone after this season too. If Chizik was going to win he had to win now because he and anyone with football knowledge knows that without a stud a qb this offense is another version of run and shoot employed by June Jones and in the SEC the good coaches figure you out pretty quick. Cameron Newton has been the difference maker and he will be long gone either way next year and Auburn is back to the bottom tier in the SEC. The 2011 ROAD schedule for Auburn is good for 4 losses and Chizik needed this year to buy him some time….well folks ..a bought and paid qb got him those extra few years.

To Mark Bradley, I must thank you for the entertainment value of these blogs! I used to think Saturday Night Live reruns were good for laughs, but reading the comments on these blogs is better!

I mean, … you’ve got fans of one SEC team INSISTING that THEIR team cheats LESS than yours, and therefore, their wins are more “righteous”. Fans arguing over what violations are “worse” or “better”. Fans lamenting over the fact that their team didn’t cheat ENOUGH in recruiting, and fans that are already “spades” calling fans of other teams “spades”. Talk about blind spots and lack of self-awareness; the SEC has it in SPADES!

All this is like an episode of Seinfeld. Self-absorbed fans of one team that ignore the planks in their own eyes because they’re so focused on the speck in the other fans’ eyes.

John: What is your definition of redemption? Being kicked out of Florida for academic malfeasants, signing with the next highest bidder school, you call this redemption? I believe we are about four steps away from redemption in this matter. If all the allegations are true then what we will have is exposure, expulsion, acknowledgement (by Cam Newton) and repentance. Then, and only then, can redemption occur.

NIce summary. What of the timing of this? Alleged cheating at UF in 2008? Really? That matters today, this week, in arguably the biggest game for AU this year (so far).

And the Miss St recruitment does not mean AU paid. AU’s NCAA coordinator is among the toughest in the league…post Pat Dye recruitment debacle in the late 1990’s. Auburn is UBER-cautious with these issues…recall the 11 and 0 season in which we were not bowl eligible. No one wants to relive that. Not to mention, the NCAA has had this info for 7 months…timing is everything, isn’t it?

Regardless of Cam Newton’s innocence or not, the underbelly is this…kids with less, see opportunity for more. There are rogue, vile agents salivating at the opportunity to “sell” the talent. It happens…and far more often than anyone in the SEC, NCAA or FBI would know or admit.

It all looks pretty crooked, but why would Auburn bench him now? If he did get paid, and that is proven to the NCAA’s satisfaction, thern Auburn is going to be screwed whether or not they bench him now at this late date. Basically, Auburn is “all in” with Cam at this point. Its too late to fix anything that went wrong, so why not go for it and try to win a championship? I’m not an Auburn fan, but at this point it seems that they would be better off winning a championship and potentially having it taken away later, rather than sitting down the guy that is the key to your whole team and losing thre last two games and missing out on the SEC championship. Besides, even if they sit him for these last two games, I doubt the Newtons are going to refund any of that money.

Now Florida has got a mess on its hands and it probably didn’t have a single source give Evans anything. Read that dudes articles and he’s just full of hate towards Auburn and Newton and unfounded on so many accounts.

So this is the template, next time Florida, Tennessee or what have you has a 10-0 team and Heisman front runner by a mile, start leaking to reporters that Mr. Anonymous and Mr. Unidentified and Mr. Off The Record and Mr. Speaking on Condition of Anonymity says said player wanted hundreds of thousands of dollars to play and you can make everything come apart.

I say follow the money.

First, who benefits from knocking Auburn out of the SEC West Championship and the BCS, or Newton out of the Heisman? Most likely this is motivated by sour grapes somewhere, maybe from multiple sources, all feeding the fire. Who would have sour grapes? Isn’t it still possible Florida could get the SEC BCS bid? Miss. State? Alabama? What about Boise and TCU? Less likely? Taking out Newton and perhaps Auburn entirely would clear a major hurdle.

Second, follow the pay for play money. Start tracing bank accounts and pressing witnesses. As for Auburn, they might as well go all-in and play out the season with Newton, regardless of the allegations. If they are guilty, or if they have lost institutional control, give them the death penalty. If Newton or his family took money he should lose his scholarship and be banned by the NCAA. Most likely there is illegality involved with the payments as well.

There is a rat in Starkville.
But it doesn’t matter. Auburn is going to be fine.
LSU has given up about 1200 yards rushing. Auburn got 400 of those.
Dawg defense line better be ready. Better tackle good at the second level.
Murray should be aware that Fairley is coming

Lets be real here… what UGA player has not recieved a check from a booster on the plan ride home… what Tennessee player did not have a envelope in his locker sunday morning…. what Alabama player did not get the team sport coat with cash in the left front pocket……. seriously, when will the NCAA and College football begin to offer moneys legitamely to players who attend and graduate school within 5 years a small token of money to help begin there lives after football….. yes it is a honor to play, yet it is disgusting to see what these young men and their parents are doing to them…… How did Mr. Newton repair his church? from a small donation of 200,000 from Auburn???

The real question is why the NCAA is looking at the church checkbooks, yes plural, because the Bishop Cecil Newton, I love all these Bishops, has about 5 churches. They want to see where the money for the repairs to the church to bring it up to code came from. This church was about to close because it was so cash strapped. Then all the sudden “donations”, plural, came from Auburn. Remember, the NCAA caught A.J. by looking at his checkbook. This does not look good for Cam, Cecil, nor Auburn. If I was Cheesenik, I would sit Cam for this game to see where this plays out over the next week.

Really Buckeye ok here is a stat for you 67-48-2. Know what that is, its the record the SEC holds over the Big 10 conference. The Big 10 does have more BCS bowl appearances but they also have a losing record in BCS bowl games (10-11). The SEC has 2 less BCS Bowl appearances but the SEC does hold a 14-5 record in BCS bowl games. Oh and here is the interesting stat of the 6 appearances the SEC has made in the national championship game, they are 6-0 with 2 of those wins coming over your beloved Buckeyes. Once by Florida and once by LSU, so all you Buckeye fans can just go back to Ohio with who is a better team and who is a better conference, cause the Big 10 as a whole does not hold a candle to the SEC, thank you and good night!

Where there is smoke, there’s fire. Lots of smoke here. LOTS of it.

I suspect that there is something to this story.

That being said, Auburn’s history is not fraught with cleanliness and honesty in dealing with its players (remember Jeff Burger being kicked out of school for cheating and having the university president override the Honor Council? And his one-series “suspension” against Florida as punishment for the infraction? This is just e pluribus unum).

I suspect they will play him and simply put an asterisk next to the season if he is retroactively ruled ineligible. That’s my bet.

Bull,
Thanks for trying to correct some of the mistakes and keep it reasonable.

Sure doesn’t look good for Cam and AU. Some in denial, but even Cam and his father, Cecil, won’t discuss the allegations of cheating at UF and his scheduled appearance before a Student Judiciary which DOES reflect on his integrity AND is a part of the Heisman selection process.

My major question is if the SEC and NCAA knew of these allegations from MSU recruiters since January, why have they not moved on them? They “heard a rumor” that A J Green was at a party in Miami and they jumped on that like white on rice. There you have a kid who is genuine, didn’t seek publicity with signing (named one university and never wavered), kept his name out of the spotlight, didn’t go to Miami as he said he didn’t, but did sell a meaningless jersey to someone connected to an agent (unknown to him), and he immediately gets busted for 4 games which turned out to be important. The NCAA had no idea about the jersey but found it in a witch hunt when they were embarassed they couldn’t pin the Miami gig on him. Now, what the hell was the SEC and NCAA doing with this story for the past 10 months?

AU has no chioce but to play him. If they have to forfeit the first 10 games what difference does one more make?

And yes GT fans, I do think it makes a difference whether you are arrested for a suspended license versus a felony, selling dope, terroristic threats, abusing women, firing an AK47 in a bar, or beating an off duty policeman nearly to death and fighting the police that answer the call!

ANYBODY COULD COME FORWARD AND SAY SOMEBODY TOLD ME SOMETHING. I GUESS THAT MAKES IT A FACT AT ESPN!!! NO RECORDED TAPE OR ANYTHING. JUST HE SAY SHE SAY.

The story is about a Mississippi State booster admitting that he helps to try and pay players to come to Mississippi State.

The booster is snitching on Mississippi State because the student went to Auburn. The story isn’t about the kid that didn’t go to Mississippi State. The story is probable in the kids that went to Mississippi State. I hate to snitch but that is the truth.

HOW CAN A TV NEWS STATION AIR ALLEGATIONS AGAINST A COLLEGE KID WITHOUT ANY PROOF??

Mr. Bradley, You said that you would vote for Cam Newton for Heisman if you had a vote, well I do not know if the Newton’s are guilty of the allegations, or not, but he was in possession of a stolen lab top, and from what I have read about the Heisman, it is to be given to the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Cam Newton as a football player is one of the most outstanding players in collegiate football, but his Integrity has been called into question, does a Heisman voter, vote for him on his accomplishments along, or do they look at his dealings that have called into question his integrity, and consider voting for one of the other Heisman candidates that have had no controversies?

Auburn grad here. I’ll be the first to tell you that if Auburn was dumb enough to pay this kid we deserve anything the NCAA would throw at us. No player is above Auburn. Until something concrete comes out I have to defend my team. I do feel most of this is a witch hunt as his academic records and traffic violations have nothing to do with his eligibility at Auburn. Anyone arguing those points immediately loses all credibility. The only question Auburn fans need to ask themselves is “can it be proven we paid this guy” All these SEC fans from other schools piling on Auburn right now…better enjoy it…because we all do it. Don’t be so naive to think Cam is the first player to receive money. It’s unfortunate the timing of all this coming out in week 9 of a potential SEC championship season for Auburn, thus making the assumption someone is out to get us (if we were 5-5 right now my guess is it wouldn’t have leaked)…but the bottom line is fans need to caution what they say and how they comment because they could find their team in a similar position in the future. Does it appear Auburn may have paid him? Yes. Can they prove it? Yet to be determined.

And the only other thing I would like to say is lay off the Auburn probation comments and do a little research. Auburn has been on probation many times but the most recent one people refer to the most with Pat Dye is just wrong. Do a little research before you talk trash about that. Eric Ramsey, an AU football player, went into Pat Dye’s office with a tape recorder in his pocket and told him he needed money for groceries because he didn’t have any food for his kid. Pat Dye gave him 200 dollars and Auburn basically went on probation for that. If you think that is bad you are a sad person. Why in the world would an AU football player walk into his head coaches office with a tape recorder if he wasn’t paid by someone to do it? Oh and I forgot to mention that Eric Ramsey’s wife eventually sued Auburn. The Ramseys are traitors paid by someone. Yeah, Pat Dye was an awful man.

Auburn may be guilty but I would hold off on this “Auburn is going down” stuff. We simply don’t know that yet. The bottom line is as of right now all of this is a bunch of people talking on phones and speaking hearsay. The report that came out today never mentioned that the phone calls were in fact recorded…they just said the recruiters said the phone calls happened. So, Auburn may be guilty here, but actually proving that Auburn paid this kid on paper is a whole different story. The NCAA is going to need more than hearsay to penalize Auburn. They are going to need financial records that prove guilt. I think the fact Auburn and the NCAA has known about this since January and Auburn continued to play Cam is proof that Auburn is pretty confident nothing will be found.

What makes UGA look absolutely awful in all of this is to realize that a Heisman Trophy front runner (and possibly winner) playing quarterback at Auburn was originally recruited by UGA as a tight end. A tight end? Newton might have made an awesome tight end at UGA, but what a waste of talent that would’ve been given his very obvious quarterback skills. This puts into serious question the recruiting and coaching abilities at UGA. Now we know why many of the four and five star recruits don’t always live up to their billing at UGA.

All of his other stops (Valdosta, LSU, Dolphins) were on the defensive side of the ball. Obviously we were the only program that didn’t know how best to utilize him and now he’s with Satan as a DC and Assistant Coach! The Reverand “Clam” Newton will not deny the allegations. He did
admit that he wouldn’t send Cam to Miss State because “he would be just a
rented mule.” What does that say? True or not, like Cam says; “it really
doesn’t affect me”. In 6 months he is bolting to the NFL. The money Auburn paid
will be chump change compared to a pro contract and the endorsement money that
is sure to follow. Mark this down, as soon as the BCS games are over he is gone.
You can bet, AJ Green is not the only SEC player getting his agent money laundered
through ebay or church tithes. It is time the hypocrisy stops and let these men
go directly to the NFL anytime they want.

Watch Barry Switzer in “The Best That Never Was” and see how he mirrors Gene
Cizik. The parallels are scary, they even look alike. See how “family friend” Reverend Fairley used Dupree for his financial gains. If Dupree would have stayed at Oklahoma, no one, (not even the

records he would have set.

Maybe this will be the case that exposes college athletics for what it is. Crooked as a dogs hind leg. Billions of dollars are involved, with apparently pretty slip-shod accountability. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if it is revealed that the NCAA is deeply involved in kickbacks and money laundering. Do I have any evidence? No, but you got a bunch of ex-jocks involved in the transfer of billions of dollars of money, with millions of pairs of blind-eyed college football fanatics that live vicariously through whether or not the old alma-mater wins on Saturday. With what we witness going on with Wall Street and Washington, would one expect that those involved with college athletics are more moral than those jokers. Follow the money, baby. Follow the money.

Who gets emotional about not going to MISS STATE…NOBODY.

ACC is not the pure, brick buildings clad with ivy conference like some try to portray. NC is knee deep in stuff like this not to mention Miami and Va Tech lately. See? UVA and BC one or two others are fairly clean programs in the ACC. All Cheaters Club.

Go Dogs and Hooray for the SEC which is big boy ball.

Dear Buckeye, Although I agree with a few of your comments I must remind you of the beatings your team has taken at the hands of the SEC the last few years. We do take our football to heart in the south just as you guys do at OSU. The diffrence in our conference is every game is a rivalry. The issue with Cam Newton could happen and has happend at other universities. The bottom line is if he did what they said the NCAA will find it out. The investigators at the NCAA are former CIA and FBI types.

Everybody is tired of the SEC, except for 4 states. How many SEC championships does GA have in the last 20 years? You are so backwards you have to reuse team nicknames for four teams because the barbeque and sweet tea clouded your judgement. Sorry you all drink the cool aid. The SEC is so tough we can only go 5-5, hiding behind the skirt. Take your felons and start the NFL Nationwide tour. The SEC is a disgrace to college and universities in the United States.

Auburnfan,

Try to keep up, now.

In every sport, collegiate and professional, all teams have fans that think their team is gonna be good every year. Braves fans, Yankees fan, Cowboys fans, Raiders fans, Bama fans, Tech fans, etc. all hope for the best of their favorite teams.

The local media write about the local team, usually favorably. Why, you ask? So the local fans read their articles. Why, you ask? So the newspaper can sell advertisements, then pay the writers.

It’s what makes the world go ’round.

Broaden your horizons and you’ll see there are fanatical fans of every team, even Auburn.

Folks…Fans, Well Wishers and Haters….

I really did not mean to commit all those traffic violations, the car that Florida provided me was just
“too much car” for me to be driving. I told my benefactor in Gainesville that I needed something that was not so powerful, but he told me if I was going to a stud qb for the Gators I needed to reflect some power. Sorry about those tickets.

Now I went to JC to get away from all the cheating scandal at UF. I was told by my “tutor” that those papers were “good papers” and I should use them. Then all of a sudden I get called into the Deans office and he told me a “hard nosed, no nonsense Prof” was out to get any football player, and he picked on me. Coach Meyer told me not to worry about it that he would “handle it” and I would be out of trouble in no time. But I know how things like that work out and Tim Tebow was the “Golden Child” at UF not me, so I packed my stuff and got gone.

My going to Auburn over Mississippi St. Oklahoma, or Tennessee had nothing to do with FACILITIES at any of the schools, it was according to my daddy “about getting paid”. Now I know my Auburn family thinks Coach Chizik knew nothing about it, but let me say he knows the whole story and he as they say with Political ads ” I approved this message” .

Just to put my Auburn fans at ease and settle this once and for all, I will play out the season, and the NCAA will need at least a year to build a case. By then I will be getting paid by the NFL and my daddy will deny deny deny and Coach Chizik will deny deny deny.

Why is it one kid is a “thug” for stealing/possessing a stolen laptop; while the other kid, who KILLED his friend while Drunk driving, is a “poor kid”?

I’ve noticed that a lot on these boards…..Michael Vick – (who didn’t kill anyone) is a THUG; Danny Heatley (who DID kill someone) is a poor kid; Plaxico Burress (who didn’t hurt anyone but himself), THUG; Ben Rothlesberger, (who DID hurt someone / accused of RAPE), a poor kid.

A few thoughts…
The SEC needs to:
1. Tell us what is SEC policy on players who leave one SEC university, earn a junior college degree, and then go to another SEC school? That policy should be the one that governs Cam Newton’s eligibility.
2. If a player leaves before becoming academically ineligible, does that factor in his later eligibility?
3. If a player is scheduled for a hearing on his academic eligibility, and he leaves school prior to it…what is school policy? Do they just drop it as no longer applicable?
4. Did Cam Newton or anyone in his circle of family or friends get any money from ANYONE for going to Auburn. Newton, Gene Chizik, and the entire Auburn coaching staff should testify under oath as to what they might know about it.

The US Justice Department should:
1. Investigate who revealed private academic information in defiance of federal law.

Zach Mettenberger is a thug. He pled guilty to 2nd degree sexual battery.

Plaxico is not a thug. He hurt no one but himself, and if he lived in about 35 other states, he would have not broken any laws that night in the bar.

Mike Vick was a thug. He said after his conviction, “I will redeem myself. I have to.” It sure seems, for once, MV has really done just that. He served his time, and I, for one, am happy with his fresh start. A thug no longer.

Perhaps time for column number five, Bradley!

ESPN is reporting that they have spoken with two Mississippi State recruiters who both say they received a phone call from Newton. Newton expressed sadness that he would not sign with them but instead with Auburn. Newton’s quote to the two recruiters was “the money was too good” at Auburn!

In addition, a former Miss State player says he personally had a conversation with Newton’s father, who told him he expected between $100,000 and $180,000 in cash from any university that would get an LOI from his son!

Whether Auburn agreed to this, it seems clear that Newton’s father was very cavalier with the NCAA recruiting rules and looked at his son as a cash cow! Very sad, especially since this father is also a practicing minister! So much for integrity!

Ken Stallings

November 11th, 2010
4:50 pm

SEC Homer,

I’m afraid there are now three sources on record. Two Miss State recruiters and a former player. All three report they had discussions with either Cam Newton himself (the two recruiters) or his father (the player) who said the topic of cash for his recruitment was directly addressed.

BR-ATL

November 11th, 2010
4:56 pm

I hope none you are ever falsely accused, because it is awful. Let’s keep in mind that accusations DO NOT equal evidence of wrong doing. To counter that, let’s insist that the Mississippi State coaches or “recruiters” that had first-hand conversations involving Cam Newton and money need to be willing to attach their name to their statement. They need to say “I was solicited for money.” and my name is ______, and my function at Mississippi State is _____.

To not go on the record is an abuse of power over a young person. It is junior high, girly gossip. John Bond is a BOOSTER today, so what if he was a former player from 20 years ago. Why is the media not willing to correctly identify him as a BOOSTER?

I am an Auburn grad, and Auburn paid Newton or his father, than give us the death penalty. But a young person’s reputation is being slapped around by a bunch of well paid coaches and boosters, who don’t have the guts to go on the record. What are they afraid of? Just go on the record or admit that it is hearsay. To prevent this problem, all journalists should insist on seeing real evidence before reporting, particularly if its from an anonymous source. Why aren’t journalists licensed anyway, because it would bring some ethics to a sleazy profession if you had to play by some actual rules.

BR-ATL

November 11th, 2010
5:02 pm

Ken Stallings, John Bond is a BOOSTER. Even if he was former player 20 years ago, he is a BOOSTER today. He has already said on the radio that he did not have first or even second hand contact with the Newtons. If the Mississippi State recruiters had first hand conversations, than they must be actual coaches because Mullen said on TV that nobody recruits excepts the coaching staff. Therefore, those two coaches who had first hand conversations NEED TO GO ON THE RECORD. Period. A young man is twisting in the wind. These accusations are serious and they deserve to be attributed to an ACTUAL source.

Someone on the first page of this blog got it right! It is the SEC’s fault. The SEC is concerned with money first, tv ratings second, entertainment third, and values a distant tenth. And, if the truth was really known, most of you freaks on here wouldn’t mind a little cheating by your favorite team/coach/school in order to win a championship. Why not condone it? The way for UGA to beat Auburn is has been said by one prognosticator to score on every possession and take a long time doing it. Keep Cam off the field and control some clock. That could definitely happen but granted it is easier said than done. I would love to pick UGA – and believe I will, say 37-34. However, I don’t think UGA has beaten Auburn five straight years in a LONG time if ever. It should be a great, entertaining game though.

Hey, StraightJacket. You need one. How long have you been following SEC football? Mississippi State not even trying to chet?. I guess you don’t remember when jackie sherrill put MSU on probation.

I stand corrected in that UGA has beaten Auburn five times in a row twice. From 1923 thru 1931 UGA won nine in a row and then from 1944-48 won five in a row. So it hasn’t happened since before 1950 so a win for UGA Saturday would really be special!

Sports Hoopla shows proof that Newton’s cheating scandal was posted on a message board back in mid October. Foxnews did not break the story.

Again I see a comment taken out of context.. “the money was too much!” This is obviously Cam calling Mississippi State”s attempt to buy him “Too Much.” As in this money thing is too much for us to get involved in. Lots of out of context “Allegations” here to watch out for!
