Get the picture: Cam Newton plays for Auburn but used to play for Florida and considered playing for Mississippi State. Last week ESPN.com reported that former MSU quarterback John Bond — from Valdosta, by the way — was told it would cost the Bulldogs $180,000 to land Newton. On Monday FoxSports.com reported that Newton was facing expulsion for cheating at Florida.
Today’s development in this swiftly moving SEC tempest: Urban Meyer, who coached Newton at Florida, told Pat Dooley of the Gainesville Sun he hadn’t leaked the information to FoxSports. Dooley quotes the Urbanator thusly:
“Obviously, it’s a joke. I don’t know anything about anything. I heard they’ve got me meeting with the agent and all that. I never met with anybody. It’s ridiculous.”
According to Dooley, the Florida media relations department went so far as to release this statement from Meyer:
“Our entire focus right now is on preparing for our biggest game of the year against South Carolina. For anyone to think that I or anyone on our staff may have leaked information about private student records to the media doesn’t know us very well. It’s a ridiculous claim and simply not true.”
None of this has anything to do with us here in Atlanta. Except that Newton played at Westlake High and lives in College Park, and his father is the pastor of the Holy Zion Church of Deliverance in Newnan. And also that Auburn, which is ranked No. 2 in both the Associated Press poll and BCS standings, faces the Georgia Bulldogs this weekend and can clinch a berth in the SEC championship game at the Georgia Dome by winning. And that Auburn could well meet — small world! — Urban Meyer’s Gators here on Dec. 4.
According to Charles Goldberg of Al.com, Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs released a statement — hey, it seems the thing to do — regarding Newton on Tuesday:
“In the past 24 hours, a lot of allegations have surfaced that date back two years ago and further. These allegations and rumors about Cam Newton are unfortunate and sad because they seem intent on tearing down the reputation of a young man who has done everything we’ve asked him to do.
“Cam has been and continues to be completely honest with us. Cam is, by all accounts, a great kid. Any discussion of academic records is a clear violation of federal privacy laws. We will not go down that path or stoop to that level as others have apparently done. We will, however, emphatically say that Cam is eligible to play football at Auburn University both academically and athletically.
“I am proud of this young man and the progress he has made to be a better football player and a better man. We are truly blessed that Cam is a part of the Auburn family, and we support him 100 percent.”

Why would Florida or Urban Meyer have anything to do with this? This is silly and makes no sense. Its become almost comical that all of these allegations are coming out at a time when have the #1 QB in the country at the height of his career, leading the #2 team in the country, pretty much has the Heisman within his fingertips. Here’s a kid that’s been given a second chance and is taking full advantage of opportunity but yet there still some beloved idiots that still want to bring him down. Either way, Cam will win the Heisman, he will be a Top 5 NFL draft pick and the rest is history.

How does this affect Cam’s status at Auburn? Can he be suspended for something he did at Florida? Not one accusation has surfaced that deals with his role as a student/athlete at Auburn, therefore AUBURN DID NOT CHEAT. Further, let’s put this one to rest. Cam didn’t steal a laptop. He foolishly bought a stolen laptop, which is wrong because he should have known better, but it’s not in the same ballpark as breaking into a dorm room and stealing property. Let’s just settle this on the Field. WAR EAGLE!

I think that some of this stuff going on with Newton is sleazy and wrong, in terms of allegations about pay-for-play and academic cheating being put out there without any kind of convincing evidence. Seems to me that those allegations are serious enough that you darned sure better be able to back them up before leaking them to the press, or publishing them. So, I feel for Newton in that sense.
But I do have to say I’ve been pleased to see things like his appearance on the cover of SI, and recent photos of all the celebrations after Auburn victories. All seems quite premature to me, since the Tigers in fact have not won ANYTHING yet, in terms of a championship, and I hope this helps the Dawgs on Saturday!
Finally, I must say that all the criticism of Richt and Co, and to a lesser degree, the players, is pathetic, small-minded, and sickening. Be a true fan and recognize that the Dawgs have played extremely well for five games in a row, and yes, I am including the Florida game. They played their hearts out in that game and played very well, and they have nothing to be ashamed of there. Get behind the Dawgs 100 percent, and get a life.

I do have a serious question for Mark. I understand the pressure, pragmatically, to publish the allegations about Newton at Florida. But in terms of journalism ideals or ethics, I would like to hear the AJC’s argument for why it is appropriate to publish those allegations. Clearly the paper is letting Fox Sports do the dirty work, by casting the story as, “Fox Sports is reporting that…” That seems like proof to me that the AJC doesn’t really think it’s justified in publishing it, and doesn’t have enough facts to go to print with a story of its own. Can you comment, Mark?

There sure are a lot of haters just dying to bring down Auburn because they are having a great season while, Ga, Alabama, and Florida are not. I am inclined to believe that nothing has gone on at Auburn because of the following:
1. AU probably gets the death penalty for football if the pay for play is proven. I think they are still hanging under their last probation and cannot see them reducing the university to ashes for any player. We could still win 9 games without him.
2. Gene Chizik is done as a coach if this is true. I cannot see him risking his career to get Cam Newton. Au was already improving under him. Two great recruiting classes. Great assistants. No way he takes this chance.
3. Has anyone calling Cam a felon/cheater/liar taken a look at this kid in interviews and on the sidelines. This kid appears to have grabbed his 2nd chance by the horns and is making the most of it. Always smiling, positive attitude, etc.
This is a great media story given Cam’s season and Auburn’s resurgence. Show me some proof and I’ll believe it. Until then, sit back and enjoy the best QB in the Nation!

yes NP I would also be willing to bet thet Urban would be the LAST person in the world who would want the occurance of mulitple cheating allegation for one of his football players, that gets completely swept under the rug, brought to light.
More likely it’s Nick Saban, who needs to distract newton this weeek, because he is likely to about 4 days away from being the coach of “world beater, best in history, lock to repeat a NC, but didn even win their conference”, team of the year. I’m sure Urban would also be pulling for AU to win, so that he can hand that title off from last year.

Well Cam move on to the pros. You are getting caught up in a game these coaches play when they look for any advantage. That clown coach at Florida leaked that information on you despite what he and others say. You have the talent for the next level and you owe these folks nothing. This ought to be a warning to any kids thinking about playing at Florida. And this is why these athletes should be paid something from the millions of dollars they generate for these schools and their sports program. And I don’t want to hear that free education nonsense.

Anything political apparently Georgia and Florida have the upper hand. This was obvious when Auburn went undefeated and did not have a shot at the national championship. Georgia who has not won a championship since 1980 have been ranked more times in the number one position of the polls the last decade than Auburn, totally on the merit of hot air. You have the natural enemy of Alabama, the new made enemy of Florida who gift wrapped Auburn’s ticket to the blue blood of the SEC with Newton, a jealous Georgia who has had all the fortunes of recruiting and can’t find the north star if they were standing on it. Birmingham, Florida, and Atlanta just about control the PR of the SEC and Auburn has assassins in every city, every state. It doesn’t take that much to win over these pundits, you ever been in a press box? A couple of Big Macs and you have a friend for life. Auburn needs to call Papa John’s send out the pizza, get this cheap gossip back into the box and then go on to win the national championship. Old Tubby Neal may take a case of beer, but is that a price to high to pay for justice and nothing in the rules of the NCAA about paying off the press. Money well spent and try starting any gossip about Tubs or Tony Barnhart, you could go undefeated and not finish in the top 20.

You Auburn haters can keep praying that something will result in an infraction by Auburn so the school gets in trouble and it will make it better some how for you and your favorite team. This is a kid who doesn’t need this kind of scrutiny because he is a great football player NOT on your team.

Are you as dumb as you seem?
No money has gone into the church. Have you seen it? Check it out; it’s still boarded up and shut down. Financial records have turned up nothing in the way of a sudden influx of cash.
City Council gave Mr. Newton extension after extension because he presented himself as a sincere, hardworking individual who was doing his best to improve the church and bring the facilities up to code. He was working on it as he could and paying for it as he went along.
City of Newnan discussed the situation in an AJC article. READ it — stop pulling information out of your tushie and gather some facts.
Otherwise, you might be seen as a moron.

The real question is does transferring schools clear your record. WIll we see Mettiburger as the next Auburn QB after Georgia kicked him off the team. If the alligations are true the SEC needs to consider a policy to prevent ones schools trash from becoming their rivals hero. If he is caught cheating he should not only be out of athletics he should be out of school. To all those folks who keep bashing Richt. How many kids has he kicked off the team this year and look at their offenses. This and the Chris Rainey incident are making Richt look like he is pretty tough on his players compared to the Gators. How could a cheater and thief tranfer in good standing with the Universities.

There is no federal laws or privacy issue if NO such record exist, and its in everybody best interest to make that known. Michael Wilbon, co-host of Pardon the Interruption and columnist for the Washington Pos,t had this to say about the Georgia football team on his blog, The Chat House, on Monday Nov. 8, 2010:
“Georgia is nothing.”
Here’s the entire quote and a link to Wilbon’s blog: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2010/11/04/DI2010110403392.html
20008: Mike, you said “I don’t think Auburn has any spectacular win yet. It’ll have to if the Tigers are going to remain undefeated because a trip to Tuscaloosa to play The Tide looms. Get back to me after that game…”
I’m no BCS or Auburn booster, but they have beaten the #’s 5, 15, 19, and 23 teams in the current BCS standings. And if they finish out by beating UGA, Alabama, and either Florida or South Carolina in the SEC championship game, I’d say they’ve done enough to be ranked ahead of TCU and Boise.
Michael Wilbon: Georgia is nothing. Florida has three losses. South Carolina just had a disappointing loss two weeks ago. Don’t tell me these teams can’t be overrated, because I suspect they are. Hell, I KNOW some of the Big Ten teams (four of which are in the BCS top 13) are overrated because I watch ALL the Big Ten teams all the time. I’ve seen a couple of games in person this year and will see Iowa play at Northwestern Saturday…These teams being rated as highly as they are is often part of the fraud being perpertrated (sic) by the cartel and their agents (read: voters)…

There is also ZERO chance that AU officials had not seen the entire “private student records” from UF on Cam Newton, with his consent, before they signed him to a scholarship. They could very easily put this all to rest. As could UF. Personally, I don’t think it’s the world’s business, he had some academic issue, he didnt have. He left, he transfered, he is eligible again, that’s it. It’s just puzzling to me that AU would let this thing fester any longer than a day. And don’t give us that BS that clearing the name of your “blessing”, and the honor of your institution, the PR and control of the story, ALL has to take a back seat because not one of the smart fellow over there can overcome the fear that somebody might misunderstand the “path” that would be taking. Right.

@ Josh I have only heard all the Meyer connection from hardcore Auburn only talk radio and bloggers. Some print news sources have discussed it but they all seem to quote some over the top web site or nut case Radio nitwit.
I do think that at this point it’s an invasion of privacy issue on the cheating and if I were Newton I would hire a lawyer if for no other reason to say I’m prepared to sue over an anything goes campaign where the press seems to be on a free wheeling witch hunt. I bought papers twice when I was in a pinch in college and I knew better students than me who not only bought them on occasion but also wrote them for sale.

Here is the problem with Cam hiring an attorney to press a lawsuit for the privacy issue: The easiest thing to do would be for Him, or AU, to a lessor degree UF to just come out and deny the allegations. Then it’s a clear cut case of defamation. To sue for invasion of privacy implies that it’s true, I just didn’t agree to release that information, and he might not be quite ready to deal with that at this point (if so).

The travesty is that this totally unsubstantiated heresay itself might prevent him being awarded the Heisman and might seriously harm his draft position in the NFL!
How pathetic is Fox Sports!
If you are going to write such a story that can impact a young man’s life this much, you have a professional obligation to have at least one on-record source for your story. If you can get nothing but off-the-record heresay, then you have no story! Find something else to write about! In this case, the only thing on the record is the purchase of the stolen laptop and that was dropped because such charges rarely go to trial.
I would love one day to see a sports reporter sued successfully by a player for libel, based upon loss of NFL draft position and NCAA awards by having his draft stock and reputation sullied by a false story written on off-the-record statements. We could be talking millions of dollars in lost NFL salary! For a reporter lucky to make $50,000 a year writing online, it is mighty irresponsible to cause a young man to lose millions with a potentially false story!
At least have sources willing to provide an on-the-record statement! Else, prepare to get sued for around twenty times your annual salary for damages!

If he DID, in fact, cheat at UF, he is protected by student privacy laws – unlike a public university that is held accountable by the Freedom of Information Act.
Newton was just on ESPN where he said he wasn’t going to comment on the allegations (while not denying them).
This happened 2 yrs ago. According to the story, he left UF BEFORE there would have been a student hearing on his case. Therefore it wouldn’t be in his transcripts for Auburn to review.
Regardless, this has no bearing on his current good standing and is not currently relevant.
If true, it would explain the logic of him transferring to JC better than maintaining he transferred because Tebow decided to come back (09 season). That makes NO sense since he spent that year at the JC anyhow.
Since Newton is protected by privacy law nothing more needs to be said. It will continue to be only alleged unless Newton would say differently.
Hope he continues to play well for rest of year. Thenit’s probably best to go pro.

I am all for laying off of Cam until all the evidence is collected. This was all two years ago and is history at another school as far as I am concerned.
I truely hate it that these blog writers print on all of this prior to having all the facts, but it is a way of life in todays times. It was much better in the day when you had to wait on the hard copy once a day to get info.
I do have a prime example of a beef here with our so called so called journalist (aka Blog writter, $hit stirrers) at the AJC and their lack of support for our home team ….
If guarantee you if Cam N was at UGA and all of this was leaking out, Bradleys piece today would have not been supportive as it was in his initial piece this AM. He supports Cam all the way and I happen to agree that he should be supported until we have all the facts.
This piece instead would have most definately had a negative twist to jab UGA.
First, I make an assumption…that when all the dust settles and the truth is out on Cam, I think it is safe to say that it will be uncovered that there was involvement in stolen laptops, there were traffic violations, there were issues with cheating on test, and maby there will be some issue with someone asking for a payoff for Cams services – knowingly we’ll see???
That said, be assured that Bradleys headline this AM would have read something like “Why would UGA/Richt Take a Chance on Cam After Past Records at UF”. It would have gotten into the fact that Richt and UGA should have investigated his history given knowledge of his track record and should not have put the program at risk for such negative publicity. That they should never recruit a person from H.S. or JUCO without an understanding of their character…He would have raked UGA over the coals for this…. And Shultz would have likely done the same.
Even in the AU/Cam piece today, Bradley had to take a jab at UGA and the recruitment of H. Walker.
All fans and UGA administration need to take a hard look at how damaging Bradley and Shultz really are to the UGA program. Kids read this stuff.
One of them pulled the trigger early (most certain it was Bradley) weeks back on C.Kings failure to pay a speeding ticket issue by reporting that the arrest had something to do with him stealing electronic equipment!!!
Three hours later the real report comes out. A traffic violation!
It really pisses me off that these guys are allowed to report this way and overblow situations with 18-21 year olds in college!!!
Assuming it is public record that Cam had 13 traffic violations while at UF..including driving on suspended license (I have not looked it up but trust others that it is there) Did we hear about this constantly in the press??? NO…. Would MB or JS have bashed UGA if the teams were reversed in our AJC???…. ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT A DOUBT.
Wish our world was not so starved for instant information and could let these two guys dye on the vine.

Anyone who knows the kind of relationship Meyer had with Cam Newton knows that Meyer didn’t have anything to do with the “Fox leak”…or whatever. Meyer always had a great relationship with Newton (even during the computer incident) and they parted ways on good, supportive terms. Newton is still positive about his time at Florida and has publicly stated his positive view of and for Meyer. Meyer has also publicly stated how proud he is that Newton has turned things around and doing so well at Auburn. Give me a break.
Also….the Gainesville Sun is also reporting that the Fox story is inaccurate in that Newton would not have been kicked out of school for cheating. He would have been suspended….if anything…if he was a repeat offender for cheating…not kicked out.
I wish these reporters would focus on the game of football and what players and coaches are doing to get ready for big games this Saturday….which are:
Auburn vs. Georgia (big game for Auburn leading up to Bama and a big opportunity for Georgia to make something out of a lousy season and have the opportunity to get back into a decent bowl picture)
Florida vs. SC (for the East title….need I say more?)

Why are all these other teams in the SEC hating on this kid, I’m not a fan of Auburn, but this has not exactly been a banner year for the SEC, especially in the East. So some of these schools need to chill, before the NCAA starts looking at every school in the conference. Mike Slive needs to get a handle on things, this is starting to look like he has no control over these jealous schools, because why weren’t all these possible allegation on his desk at the beginning of the season.
There is enough going on with the Josh Luchs paying players in the past, that the NCAA is trying to coverup. If someone that claims to represent Cam Newton was offered 200 grand, what are some of these other All-American candidates in the SEC offered when they pick their schools ? The issue I haven’t seen here, or anywhere, is that schools are compromising whatever passes for their standards when they rationalize the past bad behavior of good football players in order to get ‘em to come to their school. What did Auburn know and when did they know it…and what did they say to themselves when they decided to roll the dice with the guy? I mean obviously Florida didn’t want him back, even if he’d have come and Georgia, with all our problems, couldn’t consider that kind of baggage and try to get him either. Think about Ole Miss and their decision to get the Mezoli kid to come there after he’d had lap-top theft issues at Oregon or someplace…and now we hear that Zack Mettenburger (sp?), who Georgia had to let go following his sexual assault on a coed from Valdosta State and his now tearing up the JC ranks in Kansas or someplace and is being offered scholarships to several SEC schools.
I don’t know how this stuff should be handled – I mean a kid has a right to make certain mistakes, pay a price and then given another chance, but what kind of mistakes and what constitutes the proper price to pay before all is forgiven and what facts should be aired at the time so these things don’t come back to bite ‘em in the butt later on?

It is unbelievable to me how UGA fans can consistently critize and crucify the players from other schools (Rainey…Newtwon…etc.) when your own house is in such disarray. Your AD was forced out due to DUI and the red panty affair…your DC swore at an opposing player and gave him the choke sign…you’ve had 13 arrests this year…on and on. For each one, I hear UGA fans explaining it away or saying “it’s no big deal.”
Does it make you feel better about your own screw-ups to put down other schools and players? Or are you so classless that you either don’t see the double-standard or don’t care?
Lastly…why does UGA consistently hope that their opponents are missing their star players? Are you afraid to play the big boys? Most teams want to play their opponents at their best. UGA seems to hope they catch the teams they are going up against at their weakest.
Stay classy UGA…stay Classy.

There’s no telling where the story was “leaked”. It’s 2 year old news and was circulating in Gainesville when Cam left. It just re-surfaced again this week. I don’t think McGarity would stoop so low. It’s Richt’s butt that is on the line at UGA, not McGarity.

MARK: please be reminded of the 9 elements of journalism as listed below. To suggest that Meyer (or any other coach) has a bone to pick, the time to pick it, and is conspiring to defame Newton is laughable.
Please pay close attention to item #1. If you can uncover facts to this effect, then report them and write about them. If not, move on.
The 9 elements of journalism:
1. Journalism’s first obligation is to the truth.
2. Its first loyalty is to the citizens.
3. Its essence is discipline of verification.
4. Its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover.
5. It must serve as an independent monitor of power.
6. It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise.
7. It must strive to make the significant interesting, and relevant.
8. It must keep the news comprehensive and proportional.
9. Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience.
10. Its the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

I really saw Cam as more of a TE. Besides I like Aaron Murray and he’ll get better. We are really hoping he grows 4 or 5 inches this off season. Then he’ll be the real deal. A Georgia boy going to another school and winning a national title and Heisman will hurt a little though. Not to mention the whooping coming on Saturday. Oh well, we’ll get things corrected and I have a life time contract anyways.

NoGagator, what puzzles me is why you continue to argue with me on behalf of Cam Newton, when I have said repeatedly that I do NOT have an issue with him, or what he might have done 2 years ago.
But, I don’t believe that the Heisman voters are really going to consider how Chizik phrased his comments about this. It is what it is. It just seems to me that AU is making it worse, and letting the story control them right now. But I will consider that there may not be any good way to handle this, right from the start. I would be willing to bet that after a day or two to catch thier breath, they will be doing a much better job controlling it, and I would hope that it would include a better strategy than to wave the federal privacy law flag, as they have today. In case they haven’t figured it out yet, nobody gives a crap about that. They have not even effectively made the case that Cam is the victim here. Technicalities don’t typically endear people to your cause. Maybe they said the right legal things but I will guarantee you they are all throwing up in the trash can tonight because it has not been a good PR day.

NoGaGator, if I wasn’t so sure that you have read me repeatedly stating that I don’t have a problem with Newton, or his actions, I would almost think you were insinuating that I do.
But if you think that it’s been handled correctly, or that any Heisman voter gives a hoot about how Chizik phrases his comments to be technical and legal, that’s fine.
I will bet you though that after the AU Ath Dept get over throwing up in thier trashcan, and has a day to consider how to better control this story as opposed to the other way around, you will see them roll out something a hell of a lot better than this “federal privacy laws” flag they have tried to run up the pole today. In case they haven’t already figured it out, nobody gives a crap about that.

Bradley shows he is an ignorant buffoon. For months he and others have criticized the arrest record of UF players with a number that includes the arrest of Cam Newton for the laptop incident. Now, when it appears that Cam left UF in a hurry to avoid some cheating accusations, it is Cam who is the poster child victim of some UF conspiracy.
I always have admired Cam, but he needs to explain the cheating allegations (not to mention a dozen traffic tickets in slightly more than a year); remember, it is Cam who opened the door to this entire inquiry by the media when he did not tell the truth about WHY he was leaving. All the stuff about Tebow coming back was baloney.
Cam has two choices now that he is in the Heismanlimelight: 1) say nothing about the past (perhaps too late) or 2) tell the truth about the past. Urban Meyer is not a player in this issue and Cam is not the victim.

Cam Newton and Urban Meyer would meet at the 50, shake hands, and wish each other well during the game. That is all the fireworks you would see….other than a great game.
And….there is a good chance you just might see that game….although SC is not going to be a piece of cake for the Gators. The team that played Arkansas is NOT going to the team that will be playing in THE SWAMP Saturday night. This game means something to SC….and to the Gators.

Let’s see, Cam is a convicted thief, a habitual traffic violator, a proven, repeat cheater, and more likely than not entertained some offers to play.
But, the Auburn AD and Head Coach says he’s innocent and a great kid. what does this say about Auburn and their fans who defend this?
Push aside all emotions about football championships and university or state loyalty and ask yourself a simple question: If you had to provide a “yes” or “no” answer to the question of “based on his previous behavior–not anyone’s opinion–at Florida, did Cam Newton more than likely entertain offers to attend Auburn and/or Mississippi State?”
Good answer…we agree!

Why would Newton suddenly transfer from a prestigious football powerhouse like U of Fla to Binn JC?
Doesnt make sense especially with his talent. We know he stole a laptop and and threw it out the window when he was caught. The latest news on Newton cheating at U of Fla is not proven but I am sure the NCAA is checking on it. You know the old saying, where their is smoke their is usually fire.

1- Why would the top JC player need anyone to represent him? His talent speaks for itself!
2- Why would you accept any money now? In a few months, or maybe a year if he choses to come back next year, he will be signing for many millions with the NFL, where he surely will be a top 10 pick, whenever he choses to go.
3- What great player would even consider Mississippi State? It’s not the hotbed of college football, and not even close to the other top programs where he would get more exposure. Even having Dan Mullen, who after this year will probably leave for one of those bigger programs himself.
4- How did Urban Meyer let this guy slip thru his fingers? Now that’s something fishy! That might be the real story here anyway?
Ask yourself these things and only one answer comes up, JEALOUSLY.
Get over it guy’s, just enjoy this kid, give him his due, and find another subject to stir the kettle of speculation.

Bottom line, Cheese Nip did not bring Newton through the program an knew what he was getting into when he brought the kid onboard, now Cheese Nip needs to just take his medicine.
Auburn will probably slide, and I mean slide against UGA, but they will get drilled by Alabama. Why? Alabama has nothing to lose anyome and is dangerous and reckless. Auburn has everything to lose, so they will most likely play conservative.
