Another Cam Newton allegation? Sorry, I’m still not swayed

Cam Newton while at Westlake High. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

Cam Newton while at Westlake High. He was good then, too. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

Another Cam Newton allegation has arisen, this one involving the quarterback himself. Citing an unnamed source, Thayer Evans of FoxSports.com reports that Newton was accused of cheating while enrolled at Florida.

The same Thayer Evans, it must be noted, had already passed judgment on Newton before his latest round of reporting. Wrote Evans last week: “Listen closely, Heisman voters: Do not vote for Newton.”

I no longer vote for the Heisman Trophy. (The AJC now precludes its writers from so doing.) But if I did, I’d have no problem casting a ballot for the Westlake grad.

Because even if he did cheat at Florida — he was also arrested there on three felony counts involving a stolen laptop — he’s not at Florida anymore. (The charges were dropped after Newton completed a pretrial diversion program.)  Even if former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond was approached by someone saying it would cost $180,000 to land Cam, as reported last week by ESPN.com, Newton didn’t go to Mississippi State.

He enrolled at Auburn. He plays for Auburn. Neither the school nor the NCAA has ruled him ineligible. This isn’t to say that both parties shouldn’t go back and investigate his recruitment; it’s simply to say that anyone who seriously believes a player should be forced to sit because a charge of recruiting impropriety surfaces that doesn’t involve either the player directly or his chosen school is, shall we say, naive.

(Think of it this way: Auburn plays Alabama the day after Thanksgiving. Auburn and Alabama are — stop the presses — serious rivals. What would prevent an Alabama fan from saying to some news outlet: “Know what? I offered Newton 10 zillion dollars to play for the Tide — somebody suspend that guy now!”)

Yes, naivete cuts both ways. We can be skeptical of Newton. Heck, we can be skeptical of college football writ large. (Ask Clemson fans if they ever wondered about the recruitment of the 1982 Heisman winner, a tailback from Wrightsville, Ga.) But Newton getting arrested at Florida and being accused of cheating there in no way proves there’s anything untoward about his presence at Auburn.

If something implicating Auburn does come to light, that’s a different matter. But we cannot make the Reggie Bush leap — Bush had to return his Heisman, so no future Heisman should go to someone who might have to hand it back — because, at last check, Cam Newton is not Reggie Bush. I mean, come on.

More Cam! Urban Meyer claims he wasn’t the town crier!

Oh God, shut up you whiny little punk. Cam Newton is a thug, plain and simple. The kid has no character or decency. How many arrests UGA has had, is completely irrelevant.

After church on Sunday I was told by a member of another school’s athletic board that Cam Newton once stole crayons from his pre-school’s art closet. He also knocked over a 1-year-old who was standing next to his sippy cup in daycare …several times

During lunch at Cracker Barrel, I overheard folks who knew Newton is middle school … said he often looked the other way when teammates stole things out of host school’s lockers during halftime. On the ride home, they would trade the stolen goods for Nike’s and Ipods. Paying for our lunch, some more folks were laughing at how much Newton looks like Al Capone, or is it Al Pacino’s scarface (does it make any difference), because the kid’s a real thug.

These flames just keep burnin’, don’t they?

I’d be interested in why UGA didn’t recruit Camzilla. Maybe there were legitimate reasons….maybe not. The evaluation and projection of high school players is difficult and tedious, but some people seem to be pretty consistent in their successful assessments……while others seem to miss on way too many players.

When a coach’s message gets stale and tired, the team ceases to perform to their capabilities…..UGA ?

A fresh new perspective and vision can make major improvements quickly…..Auburn, Miss State ?

A lot of dirt being thrown around this morning. Some clarity – (1) we recruited Cam, but he obviously benefits from being in a run/pass system; (2) the world is full of sleazy folks trying to hustle money “on behalf” of atheletes. God knows how many folks have passed themselves off as representing a particular star athlete. I wouldn’t hold that against Newton; (3) whether Cam was going to be kicked out of Florida for cheating or stealing a laptop, the writing was on the wall, so he bolted. Once he’s gone, there’s no jurisdiction over him. He spent his year ’serving time’(i.e. mississippi jc) and is enjoying some redemption. I just don’t see the issue here. And i’m a dawg fan – I think Auburn is a one-man show and I know we’d have a better shot with him out – but just don’t see any justification for him being suspended.

All of you UGAers get your heads out of the sand or wherever you have them stuck and start worrying about the number one problem with UGA. At the rate your athlete-thugs are being arrested, you’ll be lucky to have any football team by the end of the season.

UGA has made the state a laughingstock with its reputation as one big party school with copious job opportunities for bail bondsman, and decent people are fed up with this. Get rid of the illiterate, undisciplined drunks and felons that Mark Richt recruits, and get rid of Richt too. Even with these illiterate jerkoffs, he can’t even win the division, much less the SEC, so what’s the point.

So while you sit there in your delapidated single wide, deciding if the beer will last

look, I found something for you!!!

Under the Alachua County, Florida open records, I found 13 traffic violations for Cameron Jerrell Newton. 12 have already been closed.

BUT…. the 1 that is still in continuance, is for him driving with a suspended license. It every State i know of, this is punishable by arrest. You should know Bradley, you have had freak out moments more than once when a UGA player drives with a suspended license.

I have not heard this from ANYBODY yet Bradley. So go ahead….. BREAK THIS STORY.

The kid made some mistakes, he owned up to them and paid a price. He is back in the SEC and he made it back by following the rules. All this other crap is just that. Until someone finds that Newton, his immediate family or Auburn has done something wrong, we need to focus on the season.

I am a UGA season ticket holder and I hope to see a miracle Saturday, but I want it to happen with Auburn at their best. That is what sports is supposed to be about. I don’t hope my appontents star sprains an ankle in practice or gets benched for missing curfew. The SEC teams need to quit trying to win their games off the field, and focus on the actual games.

As for these alleged sources, if you know something, own up and state the facts under your name.

The sports pages have to much information on off the field scandels. This is not a daming of the AJC or the press. It is a daming of our society that wants to win at any cost, and assumes all others do as well.

Mark – Excellent post on your part.
There certainly seems to be quite a rush to judgement concerning Cam Newton and whether he may or may not have committed plagiarism when he was at UF. I don’t see how it has any effect on his academic eligibility at Auburn. Kids flunk out or transfer for academic reasons all of the time. As long as he is in good standing at AU, he’s eligible to play. It is interesting that these allegations have come out now – his academic record at UF is supposed to be private, so you can bet someone with an agenda leaked it.
Unfortunately plagiarism happens all the time.

http://www.american.com/archive/2008/november-december-magazine/cheating-2.0
From the article:

Schools with honor codes have lower rates of cheating, but the rates are still significant. The Center for Academic Integrity at Clemson University found that while 45 percent of students at colleges without codes cheat, only 33 percent of students at schools with modified honor codes cheat and 23 percent of students at schools with traditional codes cheat.

You are fighting ghost. First of all the compliance at Auburn is reputed to be one of the best and this cheap allegation doesn’t even dazzle us with footwork. Secondly there will be another cheat winning the Heisman and probably are many in the past that won it doing worse things than Bush. Not only do they have winners with no talent but huge political pull winning it, we still have OJ Simpson a member of the club, while Bush gives back his trophy in what looks like a kid trying to help his parents out.

Fact is most of us realize and have from the start of the season, Cam Newton is the best football player in college football. The Heisman goes to a ton of undeserving players both talent wise and character wise. The Heisman has become a minor event, check the television ratings. The public knows a fake when it sees it and the Heisman is taking a beating. When another person holds that trophy this year, if it is not Cam Newton, he will be an imposture. The person holding it will know it, the country will know it and it will be the Heisman that will be defending itself once again. Newton will turn pro, be the number one draft choice, ( Vegas and the NFL are about reality) and making millions, and the winner of this year’s Heisman will be a question on some quiz show offering a million dollars for the correct answer five years from now. The bonus question may be what is the Heisman.

“He enrolled at Auburn. He plays for Auburn. Neither the school nor the NCAA has ruled him ineligible. This isn’t to say that both parties shouldn’t go back and investigate his recruitment; it’s simply to say that anyone who seriously believes a player should be forced to sit because a charge of recruiting impropriety surfaces that doesn’t involve either the player directly or his chosen school is, shall we say, naive.”

Maybe, but here is the problem with that. If at any time it is found out that money changed hands AU is screwed whether they knew about it or not. One could argue I suppose that at this point they are already screwed if this turns out to be true so why not play him but the NCAA would go MUCH harder on the program for using a player after they had knowledge that his eligibility was in question.

The $65,000 question then is how confident is AU that this thing will amount to nothing (no pun intended) vs blow up in their faces? My guess is that their compliance officer is hating life right now because this has become a hot story. If they could have just made it though the season without this showing up on the media’s radar they could have feigned ignorance. The stakes are now much higher for AU’s program.

UNC didn’t allow any of the players suspected of either non-sanctioned activity involving an agent, or those being investigated for possible academic misconduct (none were found guilty of this by the UNC Honor Council, even though they were held out for many, many games). I.E., no one can say with justification that UNC played with players that were in violation of NCAA rules (i.e., with “cheaters”). Austin, Quinn (both projected to be first round NFL draftees) and Little (a WR who was also expected to be a high draft pick) were held out the entire season. Top running back Houston was held out 7 games, only to be cleared. Burney, a defensive back, was held out 6 games due to agent-related misconduct. Good to see that Newton has not been held out based soley upon “suspicion of misconduct”. UNC paid a high price, and in some cases, without justification. Hasn’t hurt their recruiting though, they are currently ranked no. 10 in recruiting for 2011 by Scout.

PacMan Jones was also a Westlake “grad.”

I had the displeasure of playing there once, incidentally when PacMan was still on the team (unbelievably talented at the high school level, as you would guess).

We beat them at their place, and our team was verbally threatened several times by players and students alike on our way back to the locker room and buses.

The culture at schools like Westlake fosters this sort of self-serving, deviant behavior.

As far as rags to riches, how about a team who loses to Louisiana Monroe one year and then wins the NC and has a Heisman Trophy winner a couple of years later. How about a kid Auburn turned down because of bad grades suddenly getting a suspicious grade change once he commits to bama and is now a starter. How about Darius getting a two game suspension for consorting with agents (and $2800 had to be repayed), but AJ Greene gets a 4 game suspension for selling a jersey for $1000. How about several of bama’s players taking cruises just so they could help a ‘handicapped’ man with 4 sons get on the boat, yet never missed a game.

Tim,,,IF CAM WAS AT UGA, I CANNOT IMAGINE THE INSANITY THE AJC WOULD BE RIGHT NOW. THEY WOULD HAVE A SEPERATE WEBSITE DEDICATED TO THE ISSUE, THE ATL NEWS STATIONS WOULD HAVE NEWS CREWS IN ATHENS 24/7.

You head the nail, right on the head. If this was Georgia, Bradley’s article would have said ” Richt has lost institutional control at Georgia”.

There is a double standard at the AJC and with the main sports writers. If its UGA, pounce at the mere sniff of an problem. Guy does not give his first name to police. An arrest. Richt cannot control his players. et al. Most of Georgia’s problem are traffic tickets or not showing up in court for traffic tickets. Hell, they are too lazy to even look at florida’s county records departments to even mention it. Old news they say. yet we continue to here about Georgia’s old news dont we. Like mentioning one Herschel Walker for effect. Right Mark? When did he last play 1982?

IF…and I mean IF( because it has not been proven) that Newton cheated on test at Florida, on has to wonder why so many people that jumped on the QB at Ole Miss ( who graduated from Oregon) but transferred in, are willing to give Newton a ride. I guess a year playing at JC makes the difference. But if you already graduated how do you do that?

No they would rather bash Georgia’s bad driving habits then look under the covers of their own programs. Wonder how many “arrests” for traffic violations at other schools. We wont know, unless a blogger tells us, because the AJC is too worried Richt lost instituitional control because a walkon was doing 46 in a 35.With a busted tail line.

As for AJ…he got what he deserved, he screwed up and was punished.

You puppies need to quit crying. Mr. Bradley is correct about this. All of this recruiting stuff to date has not been directly linked to Cam or Auburn. The pups are saying it isn’t fair citing AJ Green and all the others that were caught in the act or hard direct evidence against them. The other 11 teams in the SEC need to stop Cam on the field, not stir up off the field issues. I hope Cam runs over every LB, Safety, and Cornerback in the backfield this Saturday. THWG!

So he cheated three times in his short stay at uf but we’re expected to believe he just all of a sudden got smart? I mean, come on! He got busted for putting his name on another student’s paper and when busted he simply went to the internet for a replacement. he may be “eligible” but he’s far from a student athlete. I respectfully ask that the media stops sucking him off as though he’s a great kid with no past.

MARK: Facts are he did pretrial diversion for laptop BUT he also STOLE someone else’s paper and put his name on it AND when caught then bought another term paper on internet and turned it in under his name. He left Florida and enrolled in Jr. college before he was to appear before a hearig at Florida which would have kicked him out. Auburn swears this is best kid in the world and the hell with what he did before he got there. If the kid went to UGA you’d be screaming for Mark Richt’s neck.

Really, I mean who cares. The entire landscape of college athletics, and to a certain degree college itself is a sham. Kids lie, cheat, and steal a great majority of the time. They also fornicate, get drunk- in most cases illegally, smoke pot and use other illegal exotic drugs. So let’s make an example out of one of the top candidates for the Heisman Trophy, to show how morally upright this system is.

SD in Auburn

November 9th, 2010
11:26 am

So he’s dense and he cheats. Most college football players are and do. Why should he be any different? This isn’t an Auburn issue. It’s a college football player issue. Have any of you seen OJ’s attempts at writing? One would think he has a diagnosis of MR. Perhaps he does. Yet Southern California legally let him play, and who can blame them?

The solution to this (for all of college football – hardly just for Auburn) is to make football players have the same academic qualifications as all other undergrads (these qualifications are appallingly low at every university in the SEC except for Vanderbilt, and appallingly low at nearly every BCS institution nationally). What is undergrad school, really, other than playschool?

We could still have college football. The only difference is that it would be authentic college football. Or we can continue with this industry (it works for me). But if we do, we can’t hold Cam or other players accountable for not being able to manage academically with honesty.

This Cam Newton thing just smells rotten. from Fla. 13 alleged traffic tickets, with one still open for suspended license( that was the same think C. King was guilty of right..suspended license, that prompted a article about “Richt losing control”). Buying stolen laptops, allegations of cheating at previous school. Allegations of payoffs to play. Too much coming from too many different areas. I think there is going to be more in the coming weeks.

The same issues prompted the AJC( was that you Mark or Jeff) that Richt had lost control of his team. Hell this one kid hit that number at Florida all by his self. But that was in the past you say. We are talking about the now you say.

Of course we should not point at other teams, What of Herschel Walker’s recruitment in 1979. There might be a problem there. Forget the NCAA five year limit right Mark. I mean a comment like that will stir the Bulldog nation pot.

Your problem …..gunslinger journalism. Just ready to write something, anything. Like a cop stopping traffic to get his quote of tickets in. Your write a quote of words so you can go home.

I remember your writing in the 80’s and some in the 90’s and it has some value.I could read it and say,” there is some journalism there.”

Two things! One yes he was arrested for HAVING a stolen laptop. He did not steal it. He purchased a stolen laptop. He did not steal anything from someones dorm room. Really, read up on your facts here. Second, in order to be a felon you must be convicted. He was never convicted and ALL charges were dropped. Therefore, the kid has no felony record! He has admitted to making mistakes. Let the kid learn from those and grow as a person.

South GA Dawg- you make UGA look real brilliant! Let’s not cast stones just yet. Don’t mention standards! Yall are far from the top when it comes to having standards.

Let’s let this all play and then come back when there is really something to talk about!

All colleges have cheaters, that’s nothing new. Hell if I recall correctly I’m not even sure Deion Sanders was enrolled in classes for part of his time at FSU! Let’s also not forget that these are KIDS! Kids will be kids and make mistakes. Some of them will be bigger than others. No one is perfect and that is how we learn and grow as a person. When all this comes and there is guilt found, then by all means, throw your stones. Until then, lets finish playing some awesome football that we have left this year!

It’s funny how in this day and age that anyone can say anything without any evidence whatsoever and people suddenly start to judge. What the kid did pre-Auburn is completely irrelevant to his Heisman candidacy at Auburn. The Heisman trophy is supposed to be awarded to the best college football player in that given season, wich is Cam Newton at Auburn.

The fact that he may have cheated on a test at a previous school and may or may not have been offered money to attend a school he is not currently enrolled at is irrelevant. He is the best college football player this year at Auburn University.

He may not win the “Collegiate Good Decision Award” but there is not doubt he should win the Heisman.

Passing in a no passing zone, driving at “unspecified speed” and 3x not carrying his license. The felony must have been for the laptop incident. Maybe he transferred from Florida to escape the long arm of the law.

My record includes only citations for speeding (50mph in a 40 mph zone) twice; one in NJ in 1978 and the other in GA in 1988. 2 different states, so I’m not considered a serial offender.

@Glenn: All of the incidences you just mentioned not only (allegedly) occurred BEFORE Cam was at Auburn, but also aren’t proven. The laptop thing was a misunderstanding and he was exonerated. And the cheating scandal that has erupted is complete BS spewing from the mouth of an idiotic and irresponsible Fox Sports.com reporter. Proving Cam cheated means someone violated federal privacy laws, which means big trouble for other people down the pipe. That aside, don’t you believe in redemption, and that the road to said redemption, should someone choose that path, shouldn’t be so rocky? This kid is flourishing and thriving at Auburn. He has been nothing but compliant and honest since being at Auburn. Maybe they didn’t take good care of him in Florida and didn’t encourage honesty and discipline in their players. Who knows? I’m not one to say. But at Auburn, Cam is handling things in the right and just way, AND he’s actually making a difference in the community! Plus, guess what? He’s still the best all-around player in the country! People need to lay off this kid and give him the respect he deserves. He’s not dishonoring Auburn in any way. He is the farthest thing away from a diva or a thug. He’s being targeted for no good reason other than it makes for good talk on message boards like this one. The Auburn family knows what’s up and we stand with Cam. War Eagle.

True or not, as they say, where there’s smoke there’s fire. Too many allegations to be nothing. If this guy is dirty, we sure would not want to sully the Heisman Trophy with him. He may be a great player, but in my book the Heisman Trophy demands exceptional off the field conduct too. Better to check him out thoroughly now.

Why’s all this coming out last week and this ? Sure reeks of somebody trying to do him in. And I’d begin by looking at powerful Bama alumni. Just a question…. (and I am fully supportive of Cam playing out the season…The incidences were in the past) BUT…. A JUCO transfer who had previously been at a D1 school…. had been involved in lap top theft but off as first offender…. had 12-13 traffic violations…. had been implicated for cheeting 2-3 times…. Who had been implicated as having requested $$$ for signing with another school….

Is this someone that you would expect UGA to go after?

Another point… UF did a much better job of covering up the traffic violations and cheating than UGA does…. Maybe UF is just blessed not to have such a fine paper as the AJC around to print and ridicule their home flagship school…. Or Maybe Greg McG. knows some ropes that can keep these minor BS items out of the press.

Double standard applied here by many:

Dawgs get arrested…throw away the key.
Florida kicks Newton out for serious allegations and he stays in conference because Auburn looks the other way…..but “I’m not swayed”. “Georgia has no room to talk”…right!

UGA players are suspended for moped violations, suspended licenses, speeding tickets, drinking beer, etc. The one major offense committed caused a player to be kicked out of school. Bradley and others here call for an examination of what CMR’s recruiting practices are and who is going after. He has lost control in his and other’s opinions on here.

But Auburn admits a known cheater (3 times) and a guy who is a thief and obstructed justice and wink wink…”it doesn’t sway me”. Uf for once grows a conscience and cut him loose. Then they compromise themselves and let “stalker boy” Rainey play and make major contributions. No problem.

Now the player removed at UGA is getting scholly offers from Bama, LSU, etc. Amazing. UGA is falling apart but Auburn and Uf are saintly. Thanks for the lesson here Bradley and others…If you’re winning…the player and program are off the hook….but lose games and you’re coach should be shown the door and UGA is worse off than those guys.

That’s a load of crap! And everyone on here knows it!

Newton, Rainey and UGA’s removed player should not be allowed to play in the SEC again. One is a theif, cheater and liar. The other is someone who threaten defenseless women that they will kill them. The other is a groper. But if they play for a winner…its ok. They are fantastic…Way to go Bradley!

Cam Newton is a product of our time. He is a gifted athelete that has been catered too so long he has no moral compass. He was going to get expelled at Florida.(there was a day went that charge alone ended your career) But that is not all. He bought a stolen lap top. And yet after all of this. The real issue and story.
There was a line of universities waiting … no there was a line of schools bidding on his enrollment into there school.
The system is corupt and it is dirty. (it always has been)
Also let’s be clear. Auburn is guilty… the only question is does the NCAA have the stones to put the program on the death penality.

Yes, even as a UGA grad, I admit UGA has serious character problems with some of the players. That said, this article isn’t about UGA. It’s about Cam Newton. And face it- Cam Newton is popping up way too many times in developing and past scandals. Ya know, oftentimes when when you hate to admit it, when there’s smoke there’s fire. Too bad the Heisman doesn’t take character into it- otherwise Cam Newton might not even be considered.

Keep hearing how Cam didn’t know the laptop was stolen. Then why did he run into his room then throw it out the window? That’s what I do with all the laptops I’ve purchased. The difference in GA is if someone gets a ticket it’s reported other Schools hide it, and if caught cheating hide it(Fl 13 tickets and 3 honor code violations). I say GA should bring back Montez Robinson since Rainey is such a feel good story Montez has served enough of a “suspension” Where are all the fans talking about how Meyer nips it in the bud as far as discipline goes when we all new Rainey would be back. Pouncey said from day 1 Rainey would be back. meyer throws dismissed from the team so much that 2 weeks ago he cut a Freshaman DB and had to say at the end “there is no chance he will return” I guess until a couple of DBs get hurt. Did the same thing when he cut Jarvis Moss he came out and said he would let the team decide whether or not to let Jarvis back then he suspended him for 2 games burt spread it out over wimpy teams.

He did not go to UGA because they would not commit to him that he would be a QB.

He was arrested for purchasing a stolen laptop, not stealing it. This was 2 years ago.

He’s been accused of cheating at UF. Again, this was 2 years ago.

We have one guy claiming that another guy told him that he was representing Newton and that he would play for MSU for $180K. Now guy #2 claims he hasn’t talked to guy #1 in 20 years. No proof of this hearsay claim has been offered by ANYONE. The kid volunteers every Monday at the local elmentary school. Does that sound like a guy who’s only willing tp play if he gets $200K.

No doubt the kid has screwed up in the past. Maybe he’s cleaned his act up. Wouldn’t that be a good story? NONE of any of this happened at AU anyway.

Ten teams have tried to stop him so far, and ten teams have failed. Sounds a lot like someone out there is looking for new and “creative” ways to stop him.

Last, UGA is terrible right now with all of these arrests….Bradley and others…if UGA recruited a HS player right now who had been caught cheating 3 times and had stolen property from another student…should UGA drop him or keep trying to get him into UGA?

You know the Answer! UGA would be slammed. But Auburn did it and its ok? Some keep saying how did CMR let him get out of state? Why would we want another problem…Cam Newton who has created more serious problems alone than most of UGA’s offenders?

Right Mark? heck you cannot be swayed.

The writers at the AJC are so desperate to write negative crap at every opportunity where Georgia is concerned. All in the sake of blogging numbers. You of course cannot be swayed from that mission.

Just another jab at Georgia by you, Mark. Funny…Newton has open suspended license charge at Florida…two years later. But he is playing at Auburn. but nothing sways you.Hell that is in the past right.Says you…. No, it is not, its still open so its in the now.

But Caleb King on another hand. Suspended license charge, and Richt has lost control of the team was the blogitcle from the AJC.Because the guy failed to show up in court because he thought the charge was paid.

I remember in the early 90s when Florida Assistant coach Ron Zook paid off a Tennessee Assistant named Jack Sells to fax Tennessee’s plays and defensive schemes to Florida the week before the game and they caught him in the act at the local Kinkos in Knoxville. To think Florida is trying to say they are either above cheating or allowing a player to cheat in school is ridiculous.

Seems like Urban still can’t get over the loss of Tebow and every week he sees Newton tearing it up only twists the knife further. How else does this get out if it didn’t come from Florida. Sour Grapes, get over it Urban!

Honestly, the SEC needs to change:

(1) Kick out Vandy and Mississippi State. They do NOT fit the SEC profile: Vandy uses students as players, and Mississippi State doesn’t cheat enough in recruiting
.
(2) Withdraw from FBS College Football. There’s nothing “college” at all about the SEC.

(3) Start their new NFL “minor league” by making public and equalizing the SEC Salary Cap. Some years, it really IS hard to tell whether ‘Bama or Arkansas is paying the higher salaries.

(4) Ignore, … or even promote … the ridiculous number of player arrests from these teams. The Fulmer Cup could set up new rules to say that it is NOW exclusive to SEC teams. No use in letting amateurs compete for an award for which the SEC teams have demonstrated such dominance and professionalism.

(5) Withdraw from NCAA and let the players sign endorsement deals. There’s no reason that A.J. GREENbucks shouldn’t be able to eBay his jersey for a few thousand bucks.

(6) Have one redeeming program that the players must contribute too. Since SEC players don’t take school seriously, they should be required to document community service hours (since they don’t log any real academic hours majoring in profoundly meaningful studies like “Social Awareness”). NOTE: This should be in ADDITION TO the community service hours they’re assigned after their arrests and convictions.

Seriously, the SEC should just give up the charade of “college” football and become what they really want to be: The NFL minor league.

He turned in someone else’s work…(lying) and then purchased a paper and turned it in. What an upstanding citizen?

Of course none of this nonsense will go away until BCS players get paid. Yes, Auburn has been on probation quite a bit in the past. Kinda makes you think they would go out of their way to make sure it doesn’t happen again, especially regarding recruits. It’s common knowledge that Auburn knew about the laptop (which he bought, he didn’t take it) and it’s a pretty good bet Auburn knew about these allegations of cheating as well. As they have said all along, he is eligible to play and play at Auburn

So, Newton isn’t a great student. It cost him his career at Florida, and now everyone knows it. Hmmmm, I wonder if that happens at any other major college athletic programs?

Found not guilty and he’s back playing football. Michael Vick, served time in prison, he’s back playing. I’m not saying I agree with the crimes they commited. I’m saying in most cases people deserve a second chance. So, this all turns out to be true. Auburn gets put on probation. It happens every year in the NCAA! Cam Newton deserves a second chance just like anyone else. I would hope for everyones sake on this blod, that if you made mistakes in your life, short of taking someones life or harming a child, you would be given a second chance also.

If there is anything that college and professional sports teach us it’s that these guys are entertainers, and no behavior, no matter how despicable, is worthy of actual reproach. Why do people keep trying to bring Cam Newton down just because he is doing good and up for heisman.I bet if Auburn wasn’t undeated or had 6-4 record now no one would worry about the things he has did or didn’t do As for Georgia fans yall a bunch of crowd for wanting to play a team without their best player it shows that yall scared or need help trying to beat Auburn just man up.

He’ll finish out the season, win the Heisman and enter the NFL draft. Somebody will take a flyer on him and reach in the first round. His skill set will not translate to the NFL at QB. He’ll be out of the league in 3 to 4 years. He’ll be in prison for armed robbery, selling cocaine, or stuffing his wife’s body in the trunk of his car…take your pick.

The question is…will he be able to outscore Vince Young on the Wunderlich test?

Knowing that he is a thief and a very likely an academic fraudster, it makes it easier to me believe the story about the street agent soliciting a payoff from Miss. State on behalf of him and his family and to make the logical jump that the same sort of offer was made to and accepted by Auburn. It’s called circumstantial evidence and there are plenty of people sitting on death row who’ve been almost literally hung by it.

A couple of Joe Don Looney quotes from”The Best Player who Never Was” :

“While playing for Detroit in 1966, Coach Harry Gilmer turned to Joe Don, gave him the next play and told him to carry it onto the field. Joe Don refused, saying, “If you want a messenger, call Western Union.” For that suggestion, he was suspended.”

“Lance Rentzel, a former wide receiver for the Sooners, says he recalls the time Joe Don told Wilkinson, “`Take me out. My biorhythms are out of sync.’ I watched him sit there for a long time, posed just like The Thinker. He never moved. Finally, he jumped up and said, `Coach, my biorhythms are fine. Put me in.’ Bud did, we ran a 61 trap, and he ran I don’t know how far for a touchdown.”

I am not a fan of Auburn but do admire the athletic talent of Cam Newton; but why didn’t someone come forward before now? There should be a statute of limitations that someone can bring up against these types of allegations. Cheating, while not admirable, doesn’t have anything to do with football but does reflect upon the type of student an institution recruits. Punish him for the incident and move on. If the punishment is serious enough then the institution can ask him to move on and maybe this is why he left UF. There should also be a time limit on investigating allegations. I would hope that the voters make a decision based upon the qualifications of the Heisman not on unfounded or unproven allegations. If he has done something against NCAA rules then by all means he and Auburn should pay the penalty but until then it looks like sour grapes.

Ga Fan here. If there are no proven charges that are serious to get him suspended, per NCAA & SEC Rules, it is simple, he gets to play. And I say, let him play. I can assure you that I had rather play Auburn with him in the lineup than out of the lineup. If GA gets beat, Ga gets beat, but I don’t agree that Auburn scores 50-70 pts. and GA gets 7-14. Anyone who thinks that is dreaming. No one has blown us out yet. It is obvious that Cam has done some things that were not correct, but has he done enough not to play? Well, it has not been proven or he would not be playing. We have enough trouble at GA with our athletes, just like everyone else does.

Scarbinsky: Cam Newton’s attackers still have something to prove

There are no questions about Cam Newton on the field. (Press-Register photo)
The Cam Newton story has holes. Big ones. The kind of holes Ryan Pugh and friends open every Saturday for Newton himself.

The biggest hole in the Newton story comes from one of the characters in the middle of it.

156
Share 44 Comments Former Mississippi State signal-caller and recent whistle-blower John Bond has said a lot of things in the past week, and not all of his statements have been consistent.

Bond has said that former teammate Kenny Rogers told him directly it would take “cash for Cam” to sign with State. But Bond also has said that Rogers asked for money first from another former teammate, who reported the solicitation to Bond.

Either way, Bond considered the allegation serious enough that he reported it to then-Mississippi State AD Greg Byrne.

Byrne considered the allegation serious enough that he passed it along to the Southeastern Conference office last December, though the SEC office has said it didn’t receive “specific information” until July.

Given that backdrop, there’s a curious statement within the statement Bond made through his attorney, who released it after ESPN.com broke the story.

Bond’s written statement said that, after reporting the alleged offer “to the Mississippi State athletic department, I was told by the athletic department that Mississippi State would not respond to the overture that was made to me, and that Mississippi State would continue to recruit Cameron Newton as it does any other football recruit.”

If State believed the allegation serious enough to alert the SEC, why continue to recruit Newton? If there were a possibility that the quarterback was being pimped by a third party, why risk signing a player who later could be declared ineligible?

Maybe it’s because State didn’t trust Rogers but did trust Newton and his family not to have done something wrong.

It’s another unanswered question.

If the Newton story has holes, the Newton logic has flaws. Serious flaws. The kind of flaws journalists like to expose in the public statements of players and coaches alike.

The biggest flaw in the Newton logic goes something like this: Don’t vote for him for Heisman because someone leveled an accusation.

Not at him. Near him.

No one has alleged that Cam Newton did anything wrong. No one has alleged that his father, Cecil, did anything wrong, although there’s been plenty of innuendo aimed in his direction.

No one has alleged that Auburn, the school that signed Newton, did anything wrong, either.

And yet, based on one specific allegation against one person who allegedly said he represented “the Newton camp,” some Heisman voters have not only jumped off the Newton bandwagon. They’ve shot out the tires.

This was the headline on a blog post from Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “Cam Newton doesn’t deserve Heisman Trophy.”

Bianchi’s logic: “Newton has failed the integrity test.”

I trust Bianchi puts every candidate to that test. Does he pay for background checks on all the leading candidates, or does his employer foot that bill?

Oh, and did he disqualify Mark Ingram last year because the NCAA found him guilty of receiving extra benefits before the 2009 season began?

No, and he shouldn’t have. Bianchi voted Ingram No. 1.

This was the headline on a blog post from Thayer Evans, the senior college football writer for FoxSports.com: “Don’t vote Newton for Heisman.”

Evans’ logic: Newton’s story “has always seemed too good to be true” and “there’s precedent of wrongdoing at Auburn.”

So don’t vote for Newton because of Eric Ramsey? Are you kidding me?

There’s precedent of wrongdoing at ESPN, too. Should we dismiss its story on Newton as a result?

As journalists, we’re supposed to search for facts and, when we’re given the privilege, offer opinions based on them.

Fact is, Newton is the best player in college football. It’s the other players in this story who still have something to prove.

Didn’t Thayer Evans who broke the story for FOX sports used to work for the New York Times and I believe Urban Meyers and he and Pete Thamel were all friends. Thamel and Evans have had a direct line to Urban for years and inside news on the program and practices and would often be Urban Meyer’s news leak when he wanted stuff to get out about an opponent or whatever. This goes back to there days at the NYT and there are many examples of Urban using these two to get info out.

Urban, get over it! Tebow is gone and Newton has reemerged as the best player in CFB no thanks to you. Urban really comes of as the real sleazeball in all of this by leaking everything to the media. Everyone who has followed Urban over the years knows of his links to Thamel and Evans at the NYT and they leaked the story. Not ot mention it is against the law to release academic records of any student to the media. Now Urban lies about it? Could this be the beginning of the end for Urban by breaking the law? Urban could have just let the kid go and wish him luck but now it looks as if he may have left a trail that will prove he leaked information about academic records illegally to the media!

I think this whole sordid mess is disgusting and I think Fox Sports has sunk to a terrible low! These allegations are unsubstantiated and made by off-the-record sources. I believe that a reporter has a duty to obtain at least one on-record source before releasing a news article or column that makes such negative statements against an individual player.

Further, the laptop issue is a matter of public record. The charges were dropped for many reasons, but a prime one is that the charge against him was purchasing stolen property. This is a charge that rarely goes to trial because the heart of the charge has to include evidence that the person charge knew ahead or time, or had reasonable basis, to know the article being sold was stolen.

The main point being that this young man was never charged with theft, which it seems some people have concluded was the case. But like I wrote, this is the only verified issue covered in the Fox Sports story. Everything else is heresay from off-the-record sources.

The young man is playing college football. That’s a pathetic reason to sully someone!

Good article Mark and badly needed. All this has done is prove to me the lack of ethics and professional conduct in some segments of the media, particularly with Thayer Evans with ESPN. His cruelty and vindetta attitude has been obvious for some reason and so has it been with others as well. It seems that journalism now deals with accusations and rumor rather than in fact and that’s so unfortunate for a kid like Cam Newton, who probably hasn’t done anything wrong since leaving Forida. BTW, Florida officials came out today and denied that there was any record of any academic fraud or wrongdoing on Cam’s part at Florida, but I suppose Evans will not retract his comments despite the fact that he’s obviously wrong. There should be some avenue of retribution to these irresponsible character assassinators.

Hey, lookee here – “UF Academic Sources: Nothing reported to us”

Two independent sources with detailed knowledge of the UF academic discipline system during the period in question have disputed the Evans story. According to the sources, no allegations of academic impropriety regarding Cam Newton were sent to the Florida Student Conduct Committee at any time either during or after Newton’s time at UF.

“Nothing was reported, officially or unofficially” says one source, who did not wish to be identified. “The formal process is for allegations to go through the Student Conduct Committee. If [any allegations against Newton] didn’t follow that process, then they didn’t follow the rules.”

Thamel has been Meyers mouthpiece on at least two other occasions. There’s nothing particularly wrong with that, other than general creepiness about journalistic integrity, but just own it. Notice Meyers denial today was specifically about the cheating stuff. He has not, and will not deny being the leak for the Times. Similarly, Thamel on the radio yesterday refused to deny that Meyer was his source. Giving Thamel the benefit of the doubt, it looks like he moved a bit too soon, and spun the story as being about Newton rather than about Rogers. The last paragraph implying newton’s church is somehow the bagman in all this is particularly classy, given there is nothing to support this.

Yellow journalism, I don’t know, but it is getting to a point.

Pete Thamel with Ray Glier in a New York Times article today, headlined “Newton Faced Suspension at Florida” said “The redemptive narrative of Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, has taken another turn.” That was the lead statement.

The rest of the article relates to “a person briefed on Newton’s situation” with regard to the FoxSportsdotcom story on academic cheating, and Cam Newton not responding to the Florida situation, Ceecil Newton saying that he is under a gag order.

The article quotes Urban Meyer: “Urban Meyer said: “Our entire focus right now is on preparing for our biggest game of the year against South Carolina. For anyone to think that I or anyone on our staff may have leaked information about private student records to the media doesn’t know us very well. It’s a ridiculous claim and simply not true.”

Do you know if his were parking violations or worse. They love those at colleges. Make millions a year in parking violations. So unless you can prove hes a superdooper criminal you need to stop hatin.

I forgot which clown mentioned UGA and standards in the same response. But, there were actually a few of you…

So, who better to comment on UGA standards and leadership other than Damon Evans.

I am sure Damon and Courtney could set the record staright on topics like standards, class, leadership, responsibility, image, etc.

I guess that’s all in the day of being a Dawg And I guess nights too…

That is a true Dawg right thar!

Simple Dawg- UGA did recruit Cam. They had Stafford at the time, & it’s obvioius Cam prefers teh pread. He played at both FL & AU…who both run that type of offense.

Phil- I wished UGA could do a better job of getting in state players, but you can’t get them all. There are so many good players in state. UGA only has so many scholarships to offer…hardly enough for all the top talent. Sometimes players will go to another school bc they may get a situation where they can play earlier at that school, of maybe it has to do w/ academics, or even the location of that school. You can’t always blame teh coaches for that all the time.

floribama – Quoting from that link: “Bond isn’t a source — he’s a gossip. He doesn’t have information. He has a rumor. He’s the fourth person in a game of telephone tag that started with Rogers — allegedly — and went through two other people before landing in the lap of Mississippi State devotee John Bond.”

Like I said earlier, John Bond isn’t 007, he doesn’t really have any credentials other than being a former QB/now booster, who grew up 3 houses down from Belue. I heard the discussion between him, Belue and Kincade that was mentioned in the article. He apparently thought he knew enough of something to report this thing to the now-ex-AD at Miss. St. last year.

Great article…I keep wondering why haven’t we heard the alleged phone conversation where the Newtons request “something more” from MSU…probably because there isn’t one. BTW in other news I had a phone conversation with Elvis. Let me know if you want that story Mark.

I’ve been an AU fan for just about all my life. Dad swears my first words were WAR EAGLE. Thus, I know a lot about AU vs UA.

I have no idea what Cam Newton did or didn’t do. But, I would bet big money that all this stuff, true or false, has been and is being leaked right straight out of Tuscaloosa
