It was another hair-raising loss for UGA and Mark Richt. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
On Oct. 27, 2007, Knowshon Moreno scored to give Georgia a 7-0 lead against Florida, prompting the Bulldogs’ semi-planned and twice-penalized on-field celebration. What you knew: Georgia won that day 42-30, marking the only time Mark Richt’s team has beaten Urban Meyer’s.
What you didn’t know: The day of the Gator Stomp marked the first and last time — in six tries, mind you — a Richt team has taken a lead on Meyer’s.
As disheartening as Richt being 1-5 against Meyer is, the repeated failure to nose ahead even 3-0 is more alarming. It’s a direct reflection of coaching, or the lack thereof. Rule 1 in the Coaching Manual: Get your team ready to play. Sad to say, the Bulldogs under Richt are rarely ready.
Say what you will about Meyer, but the man can coach. His work against Ohio State in Glendale, Ariz., in January 2007 was the greatest coaching performance the BCS title game has ever seen, and his work against Georgia on Saturday was no less inspired. In Jacksonville he took the demonstrably lesser team — anybody see an A.J. Green or a Justin Houston or even an Aaron Murray or an Orson Charles among Gators? — and wrung 450 yards and 34 points from it. Meyer tried everything. Richt’s team tried running the ball on second-and-10 in overtime.
The best you can say about Richt’s coaching is that his players didn’t quit when they fell behind. That’s surely because they’ve had so much practice: Georgia hasn’t led in any of its four SEC losses. South Carolina and Arkansas took the ball first and drove to touchdowns. Georgia took the ball against Mississippi State and went three-and0ut; on Saturday Murray threw an interception on the first snap.
We once considered Richt a splendid gameday coach, but that time is gone. Georgia was 52-13 in Richt’s first five season, reaching the SEC title game three times and winning it twice. It’s 42-19 since. Not coincidentally, Richt’s decline dovetails with Meyer’s rise. (Although it must be noted that Richt has a losing record against three Florida coaches: He was 0-1 against Steve Spurrier, 1-2 against Ron Zook.)
There’s still great talent at Georgia — the old Spurrier knock on Ray Goff now attaches itself to this coach: “Georgia gets all these players; I don’t know what happens to them” — but the coaching has fallen below SEC standards. If we’re looking for the sea-change game, we need underscore Sept. 27, 2008, the night Nick Saban and Alabama came to Athens and not only jumped ahead but led by 31 points after 30 minutes.
Back to Saturday: The Bulldogs got the ball to start overtime, which means the worst they should have done was gain no yards and let Blair Walsh try a 42-yard field goal to put them ahead. Instead Murray threw the ball into stacked coverage and saw the Gators nearly end the game without having to play offense. Murray has had a terrific freshman season and had a fabulous second half, but in the season’s biggest moment he made the one play a quarterback cannot make.
That’s what Georgia under Richt has come to do: It makes the one play to lose a game, as opposed to David Greene throwing to Verron Haynes in Knoxville or to Michael Johnson in Auburn. (Or even Matthew Stafford throwing to Mikey Henderson in Tuscaloosa.) Georgia under Richt has become the toothless tiger — the team everyone respects but nobody fears.
Richt’s 10-year body of work stands as a mighty argument for administrative patience. More current events suggest the Richt of 2010 isn’t the Richt of yesteryear. It took four full seasons under this coach and defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder for Georgia to lose 10 games. The Bulldogs lost five times last year, changed defensive coordinators and have already lost five times this.
And now Richt’s gifted Bulldogs have fallen to the worst Florida team Meyer has fielded. In a year where the SEC East was ripe for a young team to rise up and march to the Georgia Dome, that team will not be Mark Richt’s. He’s no longer a championship coach. Dating back to Nov. 29, 2008, his Bulldogs are 13-11, which means he’s barely even a winning coach.

I am here to announce that CMR and the Dawgs will go to Auburn in 2 weeks and shock the world! Auburn is a one man team without a real head coach and runs a high school offense. Grantham’s new 3-4 will swarm Cam Newton and force him into throwing interceptions. And don’t even get me started on how Bobo will tear apart Auburn’s weak secondary. Please Dawg fans be patient, redemption is right around the corner.

If the team isn’t winning, at what point do you put the blame on the Head Coach? I think Georgia has reached that point.

Richt defenders/ apologists don’t really care that Mark Richt has a loosing (17-23) record against ranked teams.
In fact they dont really care about the program at all.
The only thing they care about is that their “precious” Richt remains the head coach. They will defend him and protect him at all costs, even to the detriment of the program.
DO NOT LET THEM FOOL YOU! These Richt apologists are not UGA fans, They support theCult of Mark Richt and nothing else. When Richt is finally gone, they will be gone with him and the program will be better of for it. Until then we will all just have to suffer through it.

I have been a Mark Richt supporter since day one, arguing that his inferior assistants were the cause of UGA tumbling lately. I ain’t blaming Bobo anymore. Richt has a headset on. He knows what plays are called. An idiot called a run on 2nd and 10 in overtime yesterday, and another idiot listened. An idiot set up Murray for failure on an obvious 3rd and 10 passing play (with 8 defenders in coverage) and another idiot listened, and fixed his hair.
How can it happen? How can a coach go from being the next Bobby Bowden to the next Ray Goff? I don’t know that answer, but I know Mark Richt is not a good coach anymore. I know a coach that loses 11 out of 24 games at UGA is not a quality coach. He lost to an inferior UF team (again) that had to resort to trick plays and such. He lost to a Colorado team that was beaten by Oklahoma yesterday 43-10.
Oklahoma had the same record as UGA last season, 8-5. OK is 8-1 this season. UGA is 4-5.
Mark Richt has lost 11 of 24 games. What other high profile, high paid coach could keep his job with that 2 year winning percentage?

what makes anyone think he can beat them when the get back to full strength????
2-8 against Florida is not good especially when we should have won in 02, 03, 05, 08, and 10. At worst, should have a 5-5 record against them. Horrible, just horrible.
Even Ron Zook had a winning record against the Dawgs!

The problem is Bobo. Hey, lets chunk the ball in the endzone on the first play of overtime risking an interception or putting us in a big hole if its not complete. Great idea!!! I’m sure he was thinking we had the better field goal kicker but why even take that chance? The guy is out of his league in the SEC. His play calls are laughable.
I also think Florida’s semi-annual off week before the Georgia game is a bigger factor in this series than most want to admit. Even Georgia fans don’t want to admit it for fear of being labeled excuse making whiners. Call it an excuse. I don’t care. It is what it is. We were on the road in Kentucky late last Saturday night while Florida was sitting at home on the couch. If you don’t think that’s a plus for them you know nothing about this game.

Also, the insanity of some supposed Dawg supporters is a freakin joke and so hypacritial. On one hand you have the folks who talk every year about how UGA is going to do this and going to do that but year after year we end up losing games we should win, getting blown out by an inferior team and then losing to FL consistently. Folks the writing is on the wall with your Saint Richt. You either accept the fact with Richt as head coach you will never play for any type of championship and your season will be 8-4’s or 7-5’s every year or you fire the guy and put someone in his place that the Adm deems capable of putting UGA in a position to play for championships. His time as come and gone so accept it people. 9-3 next year will save his job if not he will be replaced, sorry you insane supporters!

Thugs, criminals, losers, and, now, coaches who can’t find their way. Even Vandy gave Arkansas a good game, but, THUGA goes down the traditional road in losing to UF. Consistent embarassing for the rest of us in the SEC.
Saw the following in another webiste today and couldn’t agree more:
“Delusion at Georgia: You are not a national power. Never have been and probably never will be. In fact, you’re a great deal closer to being Auburn than you are to being Florida. See, the thing about being elite is that you have to beat the elite at least every once in a while. When was the last time Georgia beat Tennessee when they were in contention for a national title? Alabama? Florida? Have you ever beaten Florida and played in the SEC Championship Game in the same season? No? Then shut your damn mouth. Elite programs don’t lose 17 out of 20 to anybody. Period. Oh yeah, and the idea that Mark Richt is on the hot seat is absolutely laughable. Guess how many 10-win seasons the great Vince Dooley got you in 25 years – SEVEN. You want to know how many time he lost five or more games? You don’t, but the answer is five. Mark Richt has brought you six 10-win seasons in nine years, and he didn’t even have Herschel Walker. You have never been any better than you are right now, and you’ll be hard pressed to do any better in the future. This is reality, you should stop by more often.”
UGA’s current role models consist of thugs who prefer the Clarke County Jail to the weight room and practice fields. These thugs have assumed the reputations of former Miami and FSU and criminals first and underachieving players on Saturdays. It’s amusing to watch the Walmart rednecks worship these thugs who have no other vocation than football and breaking any and all laws.

What’s everyone so upset about?
Greg McGarity said this week in the AJC that Florida was just another SEC game, like Vanderbilt or Kentucky, and he didn’t understand why Georgia fans put so much emphasis on winning it. If the AD doesn’t burn to win, and the coaches don’t burn to win, why should we fans care?

“Watch Out Auburn”, I and a lot of other fans don’t give a crap about Auburn right now. Georgia just choked away yet another game to Florida, a team I’d much rather see them beat than Auburn. 2-8 against Florida, another season with no chance at an SEC title. In a historically weak division that was ripe for the taking, I might add.
They can beat Auburn, but that won’t be redemption by any stretch. Only a reminder of what an underachieving bunch UGA has become under Richt.

I remember a time when Georgia used to love playing in Jacksonville. I’ve read about how Georgia beat Florida 75 – 0 in 1942. I remember Vince Dooley being very coy and talking down to Florida.
I remember how Steve Spurrier came to Florida and changed the minset.
Now we see, and hear, the Georgia faithful wringing their hands and crying about everything that might have gone wrong. Do you realize that in just a few years at the rate we are winning the series will be tied? I would have never believed that back in 1988.

It’s a disgrace, for us (UGA) to have this much talent ever year and end up settling for average or middle of the pack results. I personally think that UGA should go after TOMMY TUBERVILLE. He has the fire and attitude that this team needs. Also he knows how who to win and call agressive plays, rather than the same old b.s. we see every week and that everyone knows. Much to my dismay, I think you can sum up the state of the program with one of our players running down the Florida sideline giving them the taunting gator chomp…..and we were losing 21-10. The sense of entitlement and zero accountability is what causes the more talented teams to consistently lose winnable games. I can’t help but wonder how much competition is really going on in practice. Or, even deeper – how many coddling and “teachable moments” happen instead of getting in a players ear and opening up playing time for somebody else who wants to give 110% EVERY play. Just askin’

Don’t make any rash decisions. Very emotional game last night and it’s a shame either team had to lose. Both sides played made their share of mistakes but played thier hearts out. I think the Dawgs came to play and so did the Gators. The stats and the scoreboard were about as even as you can get. The difference was the turnovers. Murray had his one “freshman” game but still threw for over 300 yards and 3 TD’s. I suspect he’ll get a win or two against UF over the next 3 years.

Mark….I skipped mass this morning. Had a good, late breakfast instead.
….also….does this mean you and your AJC cohorts are now going to stop taking “cheap” shots at one of the best college football coaches in America?
….also….to answer your question about A.J. Gree, Orson Charles, and Aaron Murray…..the answer is yes….
A.J. Jones….nearly completely shut down by an equally good Florida all-american CB…Jenoris Jenkins.
Orson Charles….Trey Burton….also from the Tampa Bay region…and a lot better athlete and only a freshman. Charles one TD this year. Burton….6 in one game….and the biggest TD of the day against Georgia.
Aaron Murray….freshman QB…….Jelani Jenkins….freshman MLB….made the play of the day to tip the ball to Will Hill to end Georgia’s dreams for the 18th time in 21 tries.
Thanks for finally writing the obvious about Urban Meyer.
But maybe you should look closer at the Florida roster before you make a silly statement about Georgia having more talent than Florida….not true this year….and not true for 18 out of the last 21 year….and will not be true next year or the years after that.
Florida has a much better coach, much better talent and program….and beat Georgia like a drum. Period.
Also….Florida is still in the hunt for the SEC title and Georgia isn’t. Real sorry team…the Florida Gators. Don’t mess with a Gator nest….you might get bit in the wrong place…right in the arse…how did it feel?

What SEC schools would trade coaches with us? Maybe Ol Miss, but I think we could’ve won with that group yesterday. Mark, any columns you can write exposing this problem that our administration does not see is greatly appreciated. The case for keeping Richt is nearly impossible when just looking at the facts. This problem began after the WV Sugar Bowl when we did not change D Coordinators, then incredibly after the 08 Tech game Richt came out immediately and said there would be no staff changes. Murray is really good
Oh, please. Murray has a mediocre arm, mediocre speed, mediocre athleticism, and mediocre intelligence. Murray is the girl with the curl. He’s a tease. Keeps you in a game just long enough to lose it for you. Murray is a white Reggie Ball, a less talented Chris Rix. Does just enough with his mediocre arms and mediocre legs to delude you into dreaming of bigger things for him, and sets your program back 4+ years in the process.
Don’t tell me about his heart, grit, fire, desire, spirit, guts, moxy. The more I hear about that crap, the more I think you’re admitting he sucks and are looking for a descriptive disguise to mask the stank of his abilities.
Also, don’t tell me Murray is just a freshman. What QB has gotten better under Richt? What you see of Murray now is what you’re gonna get. Greene was just as good as an underclassman as he was as a upperclassman. Cox and JT3 were just as much of a joke as seniors as they were as freshman. The same things that ticked you off about Stafford as a freshman ticked you off about Stafford as a junior. Murray is what he is, and you’d best start looking for a new QB, unless you’re just that interested in seeing what kind of career Reggie Ball would have had if he was white and played at UGA.

Time to go to Starkville and get Dan Mullen right now. The guy has won 7 games with NO quarterback. It’s scary to think what he could do with Murray. He also shows passion and energy..something this program has lacked for a decade. I’m sick of these same old quotes from our “leader”. I just don’t understand the “just wait until next year” crowd. What in anything that Richt has recently done would give anyone a reason to think that things will magically change? Hey Mark, I do have a question about how the college games are scheduled. Why do all the games have to be played on the same weekends just about every year in college. Why can’t the schedules be mixed and rotated. Why can’t GA./FL. play in week 3 sometimes. Or GA./Tech. in week 6. The NFL does not stick to the same worn out schedule. They mix it around. Is the NCAA too lazy to have to figure out all the teams schedules? Who makes up the schedules? Why does it seem that Florida always has a week off before the Georgia game? I don’t think any team needs a week off, especially before a big game. Play the whole season weekend to weekend. They need time off? Remove a game from the schedule and shorten the season. I’m not just mad that UGA lost, but I am perplexed by the scheduling process. I also think that the game in Jacksonville should be scrapped and the game gets played on each others campus every other year. That’s just me. Anyone else agree?
