Bulldogs and Gators gather to debate the issue: "Who's worse -- you or us?" (AJC file photo)
The Georgia Bulldogs head to Jacksonville, where they’ve won three times since 1989, as favorites over Florida. We couldn’t have foreseen such a thing a month ago, but here it is. Georgia, which had lost four in a row, has won three in a row. Florida hasn’t won since September.
A check of the SEC stats shows that Georgia leads Florida in every significant offensive category and in rushing defense and turnover margin. Heck, Georgia has even been flagged for fewer penalties.
Put simply, this stacks up as Georgia’s best chance to beat Florida since 2004, when Ron Zook was a lame duck. (And Georgia did prevail that year, though not without a struggle.) Put even more simply, this puts an even greater onus on the coach who’s 2-7 against the hated Gators. Because what will it say about Mark Richt if he can’t beat Urban Meyer’s worst Florida team?
I know, I know. A month ago, we were calling this Richt’s worst team. But much has changed. And you can’t have watched Florida lose to Mississippi State in Gainesville and Georgia beat Kentucky in Lexington and not think the Bulldogs are playing the better football. Georgia’s hot. Florida’s not. But how hot will Richt’s coaching seat be if his team goes to Duval County and finishes second?
I’m on record as saying I think Georgia will win. Judging by the little poll accompanying that post, 80 percent of you agree. But now I’m asking: What if Georgia doesn’t win? What then, huh?

I think we will win too. I also thought we would beat USC, Arkansas, Miss. St. and Colorado … so what do I know. We have to continue to stop the run and we have to run the ball. Great insight I know. Just too excited about being an early poster not to write something.

Mark, there are some of us who believe wins and losses for Mark Richt have become inconsequential when it comes to the fundamental breakdown in discipline of his football program since BVG left.
The constant embarrassment of the arrests and other off-the-field incidents.
Richt’s mamby-pamby public reactions and soft discipline in regards to those arrests.
His kicking off the team of a scrub freshman player after declaring ZERO TOLERANCE, yet deciding that starter Caleb King could stay.
For some of us, it’s gotten to the point where we no longer trust Richt to lead this program in the right way. We don’t believe the team fears him, and why should they? If you’re important to the team, a starter who is needed to help the team win, then you get suspended. If you’re not all of those things, you get kicked off the team. Does THAT sound like zero tolerance to you?
We’re sick of the embarrassment. We’re sick of the stories. We’re sick of being laughed at.
This goes WAY beyond wins and losses. There’s something rotten in the UGA football program. And it’s time for a change to clean it up.

The outcome will be interesting on both sides:
If UF wins, UGA is back in the doghouse and may need to join the Big East.
If UGA wins, UF will be relegated to the level of the ACC

We will be 4-5 and eliminated from the SEC East race.
We will be looking at heading to Auburn(after ISU) needing to win to get to .500 in the SEC and .500 for the year.
We would then have the Tech game to get to 6 or seven wins.
We might have to beat Tech to go to a bowl.
We might be looking at a losing season.
We might have a new coach in 2011.
How’s that? Does that cover it?

Dawgs aren’t going to win Saturday. Florida is not nearly as bad as they have looked and Meyer has had two weeks to prepare and gets back Rainey. The only bright spot is Charlie Strong is gone but it won’t matter. Meyer can still coach and will be able to find the numerous holes in our defense and we’ll be in trouble. I hope and pray I am wrong but I just don’t think we’ll be able to come up with enough stops to pull out the win….. I think if our defense had had a few more games to gel we could pull this off but they’re still learning too much as they go.

I defy you to show me a quote from Coach Richt that said “we now have a zero tolerance policy regarding off the field incidents and arrests”.
I’ll save you the time, you can’t find one because he didn’t say it. He implied stricter rules but never said zero tolerance.
Do I believe Caleb King should be playing this week?-NO
Just like Ealey should not have played against SC.
Rainey should not play this week for the gators. Don’t be surprised if he commits a costly turnover this week.

Mark, to answer the question, the heat will resume. Losing to Florida after beating UK, Vandy, and a bad Tennessee team will put things in perspective and cause fans to see this as a continued downward trend for the program. Going 3-1 the rest of the way and winning the bowl game (I think most fans won’t be that upset about losing to a top-ranked Auburn as long as the Dawgs put up a fight) is the only way Richt moves into 2011 with solid job security.

I think the Gators WILL win. I don’t think it will be a blowout, but I think it will happen. UGA hasn’t proven to me that they can beat a team that can hit them back. Florida’s offense sucks, but their defense is talented enough to carry this team, especially after a bye week. Plus I can see Richt and Bobo giving the Gators too much respect and getting conservative with the play calling. I’m sorry, but in big rivalry games, I’m going with Urban Meyer over Mark Richt.

JB,
Meyer has more get out of jail cards left. Richt’s deck is dwindling. Richt needs this one bad. Meyer can lose and fire Adazio. Richt loses, he has to cut Bobo loose at year end and he mentored him personally.
Richt knows he must win. I bet he coaches with his hair on fire Saturday and lets Murray go nuts. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him try and score a lot and run it up if possible.

Florida is really average this year. There is no switch for them to turn on that will magically make things better. They will however come out more rested than us and highly motivated. It will be a hard hitting physical game. You have to wonder if we’re up for the challenge. I hope so.

It would be unfortunate. It would be hyped as having larger implications than it should. UGA is favored, but not by enough that some random event (stupid/phantom penalty, fumble at exactly the wrong time, etc) won’t dictate the outcome and UGA lose, even if they play well. UGA needs to play well (contrary to popular opinion even good teams can play well and lose) in the remaining games and beat TECH. If that happens there will be no changes and the jury is out until next year. If UGA falls apart against either FL or Auburn and loses to TECH, well, SOMETHING will change, for sure.

No so fast Bradley,
While agree this is Georgia’s best chance to beat the Gators in some time, let’s look a some cold hard facts.
Tennessee and Vanderbilt are terrible teams and Kentucky gift-wrapped its loss to Georgia. The Bulldogs started first-half possessions at the Wildcats’ 23, 33, 39 and 5 due to turnovers and also scored on a 100-yard kickoff return. A second-half scoring drive started at the Kentucky 46 after a botched onside kick. If you look at the game stats only, you would think Kentucky won. Had it not been for four turnovers and the onsides kick.
Florida’s loses have been to better teams than Georgia has played. Also during that 3 game span, the Gators played with out their field goal kicker. The field goals were tried by our punter, who FYI is the #1 punter in the nation at this point.
Now against Bama, the kicker made no difference, but agaist MSU and LSU field goals could have won the game that were missed by the punter.
So before you go toasting your victory in Jax, let see the game. I don’t know who will win but who ever loses is the really bad team and their season is basicly over. If Florida were to lose, I could see them finishing 5-7. That would be ugly.

I think UGA fans are falling into the same trap that GT fans fell into before the Clemson debacle. You beat some really terrible teams (e.g., Vandy, UT) and managed to beat a UK team that seemingly turned the ball over at will to hand UGA the game (while the dawgs tried their best to keep it close). Not much to brag about, unless your prior win was against La. Tech…
To think that Georgia will walk into its own house of horrors in Jacksonville and beat Florida because of the past three games is nonsensical. Florida is not a National Championship team, but it is certainly better than Vandy, UT and UK, and it has the benefit of simply owning UGA for the not-so-recent history. Moreover, Florida has the benefit of a bye-week, which has apparently been ignored by most of the UGA beat writers.
Georgia can surely win this game, but I think they are going to have to have their “A” game while Florida has their “B” or “C” game. Even in their down year, Florida’s talent is still head and shoulders about UGA.

Nothing will happen to CMR if Georgia loses. Things will go on as usual. Georgian fans will just have to hope for the better next year. The 2011 schedule seems to be an “easier” schedule than the schedule this year. If Green and Houston stick around for another year, 2011 could be the year of the Dawg. I guess I’m not too confident in Georgia’s chance this Saturday if I am looking forward to next year.

By what definition should Caleb King NOT be playing. That is simply idiotic. Comparing King’s situation to the young quarterbacks is morally inept. King was stupid he didnt pay a ticket. He got suspended for TWO conference games. No program in the nation would come down any harder on him for that infraction. That was more than ample punishment. Mettenberger assaulted a young woman and was kicked off the team. What more could any coach do?
Yes. Past policy has been too soft. But the penalties this year have been appropriate. The culture still has to change but I think players are now getting the message.
Dawglasville, you cannot be that ignorant. Look at the editorial page of this paper for one or two days and tell me this is not an overwhelmingly liberal paper. GaGator…i can make the same argument that you made with all the excuses for the losses the dawgs suffered…SC…fumble on the goal line…Ark…driving for winning FG and a block is missed allowing the QB to be sacked…Colorado, although shouldn’t have came down to this…basic running play to set up a winning FG…and by the way probably the top ranked FG kicker in the nation…also, we blew out the other teams and although record wise they are not that good they hung in there with some very talented teams for at least a half..Tenn vs Oregan…Tenn..vs LSU….Tenn vs. Ala…Vandy vs. SC…we also handily beat a Kentucky team, spin it ever how you want as far as they handed it to us..i didn’t see their reciever hand the ball to our DB when we stripped the ball from him…and of course you guys beat them pretty good also…also Kentucky beat SC which beat Bama which beat you guys…these points really mean little in the ga-fla game…its going to come down to who plays the best and makes the fewest mistakes…i don’t think either team can poke their chest out and proclaim how great they are this year…both teams are probably not as bad or as good as they have appeared at certain times this year…should be a great game…go dawgs

All of you UGAers get your heads out of the sand or wherever you have them stuck and start worrying about the number one problem with UGA. At the rate your athlete-thugs are being arrested, you’ll be lucky to have any football team by the end of the season.
UGA has made the state a laughingstock with its reputation as one big party school with copious job opportunities for bail bondsman, and decent people are fed up with this. Get rid of the illiterate, undisciplined drunks and felons that Mark Richt recruits, and get rid of Richt too. Even with these illiterate jerkoffs, he can’t even win the division, much less the SEC, so what’s the point.

I can remember when all Florida had to do was show up in Jacksonville and they’d find a way to lose to the Dawgs every year. Georgia could be behind by fourteen points with seven minutes to play and the gators would throw up all over themselves and lose the game. Floridas dominate streak in the SEC is coming to an end. They no longer scare anybody. Everyone is finding out that Meyer is not that good of a coach…without Strong and Mullen he’s nothing…I predict he’s gone from Florida in two years..his ego won’t let him stay and the pressure he will get from the Florida fan base will be too much for him to handle….get ready Florida fans for years of mediocrity…..the once mighty gators don’t scare anyone anymore…and Tebow can’t save your ass every game…..I think it’s funny and so does everyone else….Can wait for the finger pointing to begin!

As I have said over and over agaiin. Losing to Ga. Tech will get you fired at UGA if you are the head coach. Evidently having more players arrested than the Columbian soccer team won’t get you fired. Losing to Florida 7 out of 9 years SHOULD get you fired. That should be priority number ONE. If he doesn’t beat this atrocious Florida team Saturday he shouldn’t be allowed to get on the team plane back to Athens. Fire him now, or fire him later but fired he must be.

Mark, I read you all the time, and think you write great articles with a commendable humility. But,get used to it, this time you are wrong.
UGA will lose to Florida, as usual. The Kentucky game would have been lost, had not the Wildcats given away a couple of touchdowns. Florida is unlikely to do that. UGA will come away, 4-5, and face another loss against Auburn. The Dawgs have been a disappointment for the last four or five years.

Florida has had an extra week to prepare for UGA and Meyer is even more desparate for a win that Richt. Florida will win the football game.
So what? UGA is not going anywhere of consequence this year. They will not beat Auburn and, therefore will not get the chance to be whacked in the Dome by Alabama.
It is just not a good year for UGA – not anything specific but a result of a number of variables (bad luck, bad coaching, bad behavior, etc).
Hopefully things will improve next year. If not, God help Coach Richt and protect him from the wolves howling at the gate.

No one gave UGA a chance a month ago. That has changed because Florida APPEARS to not be the team everyone thought they would be.
UGA has played better of late but so what– that doesn’t necessarily mean they are all of a sudden better that Florida.
I agree, UGA APPEARS to have a chance in this one– but it will still be a close, hard fought game that no one should be surprised by if UGA loses.
Regardless, UGA’s coaching and talent level/recruiting are still questionable and I’d like to see a house-cleaning at season’s end.

People want to be strict, and looks like Mettenberger may be playing against us very soon. Folks, things happen with young folks, and make bad decisions. This is just one of those years, I just read where Urban was saying he had all of the new coaches, I remember that also. So things do happen and hopefully we are headed in the right direction. A player told me that it is tough over there, and they know what would happen, so a course of action has been taken./ Hopefully, this surge in winning will continue.

Why should it impact CMR’s job, we never beat the Gators? We should be used to it by now and I suspect everyone in Athens is used to it. So, nothing happens to Richt unless he has losing season and loses to Tech. Then some real bad stern warnings will be forthcoming. Mark Richt and the team have learned to play to win rather than not to lose. Therefore, we are winning. Now, we are aggressive in the first quarter and this new mentality minimizes the possibility of losing. Aaron Murray appears to have more mental toughness than any GA qb since David Green and our defense and special teams will make it tough on Florida. The way Kentucky fought back and challenged us was good preparation for overcoming Florida.

It all depends, Mark.
If we go out there and play hard, play smart, don’t make a lot of stupid mistakes, don’t get timid and play sissy down the stretch (”it’s third and long…let’s just run the draw play off-tackle and not take any chances” for example) and flat-out get BEATEN…then we just tip our hat to them damn Gators, shake their hands, and wish ‘em luck the rest of the way.
If, on the other hand, we go out there and take the whole first half to get going, make stupid penalties at critical moments, get caught flat-footed on defense (especially when their QB hits the “safety valve” receiver and picks up key first downs because we’re blitzing on third and long), and call plays like we’re scared of what the other team MIGHT do…then we hang our damn heads, tuck our tails between our legs, and cringe out of the stadium wondering how our program got so bad.
(NOTE to Coach Richt: Just because I said something about “tipping our hats”, doesn’t mean we should wear anything silly, sir. We’ve had ENOUGH of that nonsense!)

GaGator – just take a look at Georgia’s schedule next year and compare it with this year’s. I believe you might agree. Currently, Georgia has four top 25 teams on their schedule. We lost to three of those teams. And in three weeks we play the other (who is currently ranked number one). Next year, Georgia has Louisville, Coastal Carolina, and New Mexico State. Plus, our rookie QB who does not play like a rookie QB will no longer be a rookie. Murray will have greater experience under his belt. If Houston and Green do not enter the draft, I just think that Georgia’s chances of playing in the SEC championship game next year are highly probable. Both Florida and Georgia should rebound in 2011 and play better. It will either be FL or GA representing the East next year in Atlanta. Surprisingly, it could be either one of us this year as well. I believe this Saturday will be the determinative factor of that because SC in my mind will lose to AK, TN, and FL. It could go either way. May the better team prevail. Go Dawgs!

Florida owns the Dawgs….It is a mindset, and I will be very interested to see how UGA reacts once UF punches them in the mouth early in the 1st quarter..and it WILL happen…
Dawgs..win this game, and a 7-5 season is possible. ( You are not going to beat Auburn)..Lose this game, and the match up with GT will be for a 6-6 season…But GT is so bad I don’t recognize them as a Paul Johnson squad right now….

Georgia couldn’t help where they started from but even when it was from Kentucky’s 20 we still scored. Maybe our defense caused the turnovers. That’s fair right? I realized I moved here from another state 10 years ago and follow this game just a little (not a lot). Bigger question might be, who really cares who wins this game? Neither team is going anywhere this season, so might be worth a few months of talking between the teams’ fans, that’s about it.

If we lose to the Gators;nothing will happen to Richt. However, there will be a long a heated conversation between Richt,McGarity,Adams and key alumni at the end of the season. They will show full support to the end of the season for Richt, but 2011 will be his last if they do not win the East next year.It will be told and understood by all parties. As stated before Richt has gained a lot of political capital over the last 10 years in Athens town and the state. However the last two years have put a thorn in some key people connected to the program.

If the Dawgs don’t beat UF this year, I have serious doubts that they ever will again. Florida may not be as bad as they have looked the last three games, but this is by far the worst UF team in many years. Also, if you believe the recruiting rankings (which I don’t necessarily), the gators will be good again soon. This is definitely yhe year for UGA to get them.

I thought in the offseason that this would be the year the Dawgs had a good chance to win. I didn’t think though like the rest of us that Florida would go into this game with 3 straight losses.
Still this is a tough game to pick. Both are pretty even. Georgia hasn’t faced a defense with Florida’s speed and athleticism yet so that will be an interesting matchup.
If Georgia loses this game they will be 5-5 with Auburn and Tech left. Thus I think Richt has more pressure to win than Meyer.

Oh, and one more thing: Kirby Smart would have been an idiot to leave the defending national champ for an identical job for a team that just finished 8-5. That puts his next move to head coach at unnecessary risk. Anybody who holds that against him or thinks it signals disloyalty to UGA isn’t being realistic.

They need to fire all the coaches… clean house. Just like Tennessee did. Wait… nevermind. I’ll take a few more years of Richt getting things in order and still going to bowl games and listening to morons complain because they don’t know anything about football except what they read about on Sun morning. What Tenneessee is going through right now is way worse than what they were going through with Fulmer.

And for people who need things spelled out for them, Urban Meyer has had one FIVE loss season already in his first few years. Now he’s having another down year. He’s been at Florida half as long as Richt’s been at UGA. Richt has had teams finish in the top 5 several years. So did Meyer. Richt won the SEC 2 times. So did Meyer.
We always judge the current guy against the other top coaches while they’re at their peak. Give Meyer a few years and see how he does. He almost retired. He’s already had bad years. Sure, they got a big trophy because they fell into the championship games… but UGA had no luck the two years they came close.
We really don’t know that Saban won’t collapse after a few years of good teams. It happens to every coach.
As far as off the field stuff… That doesn’t mean no discipline. It means the kids broke rules. Many who broke those rules are no longer on the team. Why? Discipline. No discipline means they get to play with no punishment. The fact that half the teams seems to be suspended kinda rules out the “no discipline” theory.

Ed,
I think part of Fulmer’s downfall was that recruiting started to tail off. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that UT’s recruiting classes were not quite as good once Saban and Richt, and after them Meyer, came in to the league.

I’m picking UGA but there is a good argument for Florida. One, they haven’t lost to a team that’s not currently ranked. Two, they had a much easier time with Kentucky the UGA did. Three, and most importantly, they are coming off a bye week and Urban has a very good history after bye weeks. It could go either way. Neither team is very good so both have the potential to lay an egg in the game.

Bradley,
The foolish assumption for Richt and this staff to make would be to think their hind quarters are off the hot seat.
There are trends that point to overwhelming decline of this program. He absolutely must win this game to prevent off-season foot stomping.
That doesn’t mean we will win. Nothing in his history proves is confidence in beating the Gators. But McGarity is NOT lost on where this program stands, and I disagree with McGarity on this point: beating Florida, particularly in a year like this, can be the most important win (or loss) of the year.
Take this down – a loss to UF on Saturday, which is very possible (I see this game as a pick’em) will stain any momentum we gain the rest of this season.
It will NOT be lost on those of us convinced that Richt is very much responsible for our decline and his (in some instances VERY) late reactions at attempts to correct problems with the program.

If Richt loses to UF, he’ll be on the hot seat unless he comes back to beat AU and GT. As an Auburn grad, I hate to say it, but sometimes… in some games… stats and records mean squat and it’s more a matter of karma and moxy. Beating AU the last 4 years and being 8-1 against Tech has kept him employed.
Losing to UF won’t cost CMR his job, but it will be used against him on top of the lack of team control and mediocre record. Beat UF… and it might make a lot of people overlook the distractions.

Everything I have read about McGarity is positive. But, he is outspoken on his negative impressions of the 2007 UGA celebration and that it was disrespectful to the ‘game’. And he continues on to say he kept a video copy on his mantle to view throughout the year.
Now, I would love to see his thoughts on Spikes jabbing Ealey’s eyes, or Meyer calling unnecessary time outs in 2008, or Rainey being added to the team this year. Would he be outspoken on these events? Does he need a copy of the eye jab to watch over and over?
Whose side is he on?

We talk about the Boise State schedule and how we can’t vote for them as national champions because of it and then we give glory to old Georgia for the same evidences we deny Boise State. Georgia has improved because the competition has declined. The only team they have played at this level and lost to may be Colorado and that is questionable. Point is they in one game against a team that in two weeks prior had to play South Carolina and Auburn the best the SEC has to offer, had a let down against Georgia and now Georgia is improved. It doesn’t work that way and if it does Florida beat Kentucky much worse than Georgia. A sense of reality going into Jacksonville would help this team, not this candy for the masses.

OPEN QUESTIONS TO AD GREG MCGARITY: Understand your stance on the “celebration” but to call out UGA for doing it made me lose all respect for you. You need to decide if your heart is still at UF with your good friend Jeremy Foley or is it here at UGA. What was sorely missing was what the coaches and players at UF have done to fuel the fire as well. No mention of “time outs”- what did that do to “enhance” the rivalry? What about Spurrier throwing for a TD in Athens “just to score 50 points” How did that enhance the rivalry???? those are just two that come to mind. You need to decide where you REALLY want to be. I am a doner, supporter and loyal fan. What I hear from you is not acceptable to me. This game is huge for Georgia, I’d say FAR moreso than for Florida. Next season, Florida will likely be Florida. This game will tip the scales for Georgia:
A win probably gets them into a bowl game, and the potential upside remains SEC Championship, BCS bowl. Even lacking that, would position them well for recruiting and preseason polls.
A loss, which means there is no realistic expectation of beating Auburn, lands this team out of bowl consideration or at the bottom of the barrel. It would cement the perception of the program as accelerating on a downward spiral and in many respects spinning out of control. It would hurt recruiting. It might cost the coach his job.

If you don’t want Florida to rub it in, beat them.
While I may find what Urban did with the timeouts to be tasteless, it is within the rules of the game. Again, all you have to do to avoid that is to beat them.
Same for Spurrier scoring 50 points.
The dancing in the endzone is different because it is outside the actual rules of the game. Very childish as well.
It sounds like something that would happen in “Little Giants” or some other kiddie football movie. Of course, so does changing your jersey color to try to intimidate the other team.

I understood what you were getting at, but McGarity can only speak about his OWN program. Maybe he disagreed with those moves when they occurred at UF, but he was not in charge and therefore could not speak.
Now he has the opportunity to speak about what UGA did, and he is letting people know that this is not something he will approve of.
I think it speaks volumes of his character to make such a stand, especially knowing that it may not make him popular with his fanbase. Doing what’s right is rarely popular.

Come on KingGator, I know most Gators hate to dwell on history, believing UF started playing football when Spurrier took the coaching job, but . . . . . .
FYI, UGA has the most 50+ point games (4-2), more 40+ point games, the most 30+ point games (7-6, (the most shutouts (12-5), and lastly, the most wins.
And, did you know, UGA “put up” 75 points on UF? Yeah!

Nothing of note happens if Georgia loses.
In time, McGarity will work out just fine as AD but right now he doesn’t have the equity in his position that Richt has in his. Even if CMR loses out (which he won’t) there won’t be a head coaching change, period.

IF we don’t win and go out there and play sloppy football by lose by a couple of touchdowns then I think Richt has to go. But I just think we’re the better team this year. Urban Meyer, unfortunately, is a really good coach, but I still think we can beat Florida because of their offense. I know he’s had a week off, but Demp’s foot has really seemed to slow him down the last few games and I don’t think that it is something that will just go right away. Murray is much better than Brantley at this point and I think he will prove it Saturday. This looks like ‘07 for UF- one side of their team is good, but the other is struggling. Only for this team it’s the offense that’s bad and the defense that’s good. Georgia wins a close one, 28-21 and Richt saves his job and goes into the rest of the reason with the whole team feeling great.

Georgia scares me to death right now. They just HAVE to be being playing their best right before the game Saturday.I think we have a lot better defense than them, but their balance of offense is excellent. We HAVE to stop the run Saturday and if we do that, I don’t think Murray can beat us by himself. Though the way our offense has played I wouldn’t be surprised to lose 14-10. but heck, if goergia commits a bunch of dirty penalties, like last year, they won’t be able to move the ball on us.Sometimes, I think georgia would lose less big games if they didn’t commit all the penalties and fumbles but they seem to be a lot more discilplined later this year, so we’ll see. Go gators!!!

He Hate Gator,
Not to mention a certain honorable Mr Rainey.
Look, logic says Myer will outsmart Bobo/Richt. I mean, Richt only beat Myer once with all those high-round NFL players (Stafford, Knowshon, Massaquoi, etc).
If, and this is a big if, Bobo/Richt goes all out, like in ‘07, and stay aggressive (on offense) the whole game, UGA will beat UF. If they realize how much better Murray protects the ball than Stafford did, this is a no-brainer for coaches Bobo/Richt. Put Murray in the ‘gun and let him win yet another game for the Dawgs.
If they game plan and play call like the other 8 years, we can’t win. A bunch of 3-and-outs, and our D will break down.

dawginlex, i thought for a little while that you were a homer but reading your 1st post made me want to say…kudos for living in reality. You and i have something in common and that is we support our teams in a struggling year. GT could possibly have to beat uga to make a bowl game (not a gimme to be duke with the way we are playing) and that is sad considering both teams had talent coming back and higher expectations as both were ranked with good reason to start the year. The good news for dawg fans is that murray is a stud and will be better than stafford by far. The bad news for GT is that the only QB we have that you will fear is vad lee who is not even on campus yet. This kid can throw and fly. We must have a legit duel threat QB to survive in this offense which i do like but you must have the weapons and it all begins with the QB. I think you guys will be back to being good again next season but i don’t feel the same about us. 2-3 year setback at GT coming. You guys are a great program and try to realize that even michael jordan had bad games. You guys will be back again and sooner than i would like. I’m looking forward to a hard fought game in athens!

I don’t understand why a GT fan would talk crap on this blog? We suck if any normal GT fan hasn’t noticed. Uga would beat kansas by at least 21 points in lawrence. These two teams have accomplished nothing and beaten nobody worth boasting about. The SEC is down this season and the ACC has been flat horrible against non conference teams. I don’t see any real reason to bump your gums on either side. Both teams suck. I feel if these two teams play saturday, uga would line up and run it down our throats just like last season. We have been dominated by even weaker lines like wake and kansas, so i could only imagine what uga will do to us.Thats not to say we can’t get our yards as well, but this will be like 2 turtles racing in my opinion! Some uga fans are complete idiots and it appears GT fans are as well. I think if GT beats uga it will be clearly an upset and a big win considering how bad we look right now. This is a rival game and both teams will lay it on the line. I just can’t believe that there is a possibility that neither team makes a bowl game. Unreal

Dawginlex, i hear you on the VT trip but they are putting up sick offensive numbers and are playing well in their last 6 games (6-0)!! I think they should have beaten boise and it was a mental letdown for them coming back home and trying to get up for JMU. They took that loss personal and are playing with a chip on their shoulder now something the defending ACC champs should be doing! Our defense is just not responding with the 3-4 scheme. We lack playmakers within our front seven and we are just losing the war in the trenches just like what uga & iowa did to us last season. Our kids lack a nasty streak and then all the stupid fumbles and penalties. The mental mistakes vs decent teams will kill you. I believe in CPJ and i know he hates to lose but there seems to be a disconnect somewhere as our guys just don’t seem motivated? I have been perplexed with how bad we look and the fact that we get dominated by teams that are decent but nothing to go crazy about. We have not lost back to back games under CPJ yet so something has to give in blacksburg. I have a bad feeling it could be the woodshed and the whole nation will be able to tune in.
I think you guys have a great shot at beating florida as well. If you can keep murray from eating dirt and get some big stops on defense you should beat them.

October 28th, 2010
6:23 pm
Richt is paid 2+ mil yearly to at least be competitive with Florida. 2-7 soon to be 2-8 ain’t competitive. McGarity needs to grow a pair and deal appropriately after Richt’s Saturday joke of an effort, where he goes in knowing he isn’t going to win, and wait and see, for the umpteenth time he won’t have them prepared, there will be a ton of missed tackles, Ealey and King probably both cough it up once, and Vance Cuff will blunder again in the secondary. Knowledgeable fans know the probable outcome and when it happens in reality, its too bad Richt keeps the 2+ mil and gets to finish out the year. Ric ht’s a loser against Florida, and stinks against the SEC’s best coaches. Please, next search committee, note to self, do not consider unproven assistant coaches who incredibly might believe powder puff football will cut it against LSU, Bama and Florida, and soon Tennessee when Dooley gets that program rolling.

This is too funny! UGA fans (in their own Minds) have the Dawgs as a top tier SEC team when in actuality UGA has won 3 SEC championships in 20 years and 1 national title in 30. Those are Ole Miss numbers.
UGA with all the talent in the High Schools are so overrated year in and year out. Who to blame for that? Coaches, Facilities, AD’s, support personnel? It does not matter. The past three years UGA has been an embarrassement to the SEC with all the arrest, failing to meet expectations, penalties, and turnovers.
The problem starts with the President of the University, Michael Adams, when he arrived on campus he wanted to be bigger than Vince Dooley and anyone else. It job is to lead the University not to be the media outlet. As Paul Bryant said one time” I have never seen 80,000 people show up for a science experiment on a Saturday afternoon”. Dr. Adams should give CMR the facilties he needs to build a “franchise”. Our current facilities are horrible and if you do not believe me go around every other major program in the South and take a look. Build a indoor “full” practice facility. Coach Mcgill got what he wanted with booster support for tennis and built a state of art facility and it is recognized nationally. But Dr. Adams is too much about Dr. Adams.
Athletic Director, Dooley to Drunk to McGarity…Dooley got forced out and many boosters were upset, The Drunk was all about removing any Dooley marks around the Campus. In the process he made several horrible hires. McGarity, he learned a good one at Florida, we all hope it rubs off on some of the nobodies around campus.
Coaching, CMR had a great staff when he took over for Donnan, Donnan left a boat load of great DL, OL and inside people for CMR. CMR brough in some great speed, athletic skill people to make the offense and defense better than most and won some titles with that talent. Since then he has lost coaches, recruits have not panned out, penalites have added up, and arrest are at an all time high.
The UGA team has a group have become below average, we lose Green, Durham, Huston, and a couple of other players to the NFL or graduation and there goes our offense and our stand out defensive player. What will we do then? We have a couple of players suspended for games while in high school this year or sitting out as a “players strike”. Who in their right mind wants a kid like that in a decision making postion on their team? No one, but I guess as bad as we are we are desperate.
We have won 3 games in a row against the 3 worst teams in the conference and we are all excited and thinking because UF is down we will win, are you kidding me? Florida is still loaded with 4 and 5 star talent , have better speed than us and had a week off to prepare, get well and rest.
We will get hammered if we can not throw the ball and will have yet to stop the power sweep( Florida’s) bread and butter.
We will find out how good we are in the second half opening drive, if we are ahead, do we score?, if we are behind can we stop them?
But as of today we are a SEC Step Child in the SEC.

Rainey has not played since his Sept. 14 arrest on a felony charge of aggravated stalking for allegedly texting his former girlfriend, “Time to Die [expletive].” The charge subsequently was reduced to misdemeanor stalking as part of a deferred prosecution agreement, and Rainey was reinstated to the Florida team on Oct. 11. Just in case you did not know it, every President is hired by a board or chancellors and he has academic control over the campus and all actions on that campus. At UGA Adams put his hand on hiring every coach and AD. At every other institution the Board and Chancellors create a committee and do the hiring, it is all about power play with Dr. Adams.
Dr. Adams knows NOTHING about athletics, football, or anything that is related to it.

October 28th, 2010

If georgia loses again, adams & mcgarity should insist they move the game to Athens or Atlanta every other year. UGA has a huge disadvantage by having to travel hours to atlanta then fly to jax, go to the hotel, etc. and florida just has a short bus ride from gainesville.

Look at other schools who did not show a profit for the past 3 years and note the staff layoffs on campus and unfunded programs that get cut. That is why football and tailgating is so important and the decisions should be left to those who know athletics and football.

Stats like UGA’s 3 game win streak and FLA 3 game loss streak can be extremely misleading. It is akin to if team A beats team B and team B beats team C, then team A should beat team C. If FLA played Vandy, TN and KY in the last three weeks, what do yo think there record would be? If UGA played FLA’s schedule over the last three weeks, what do you think their record would be? We already know the result of UGA playing MS ST, UGA got beat by 21 if you discount the last minute UGA garbage points, FLA got beat by three and probably would have won if their field goal kicker could have played.
FLA beats UGA handily. Again.

All of these clowns thinking that UGA has a chance against Florida…. Comical I say. Mark Richt aint a big game day coach and Urban will pile it on ole Markie boy. Mark Richt should have never pulled that stupid end zone ploy 3 years ago. Urban has vowed to never forget that and it has cost UGA two embarrassing beatdowns. I’m afraid it will happen again and I say its time to fire these nut jobs we have as coaches.

I agree with about 90% of what you said. Especially about the Dooley and Adams deal. Those of us who were on campus during this period and were around the Athletic Department saw first hand how poorly Dr. Adams treated the staff on duty during this time. Adams was learning the campus and spent way to much time in the Athletic Facility. It was a joke down stairs that we though he had moved the Presidents office to the Press Box because he was always milling around.
As for the comment by another poster about the Coach’s salary: You are wrong. Every cent a coach is paid is budgeted and is part of the athletic budget. The budget is approved and any outside income generated by the Coach must be approved by the Athletic Board.
One question for the guys with Fool in his name?
Who is paid more? The President of the University or the Head Football or Basketball Coach?
That salary alone reflects the importance of both positions. If you polled the State Boards they would tell you that in most cases the President of an University is a job that actually could be eliminated and no one would notice if the school is under a board of governors.

I agree with others here that Gators are not as bad a team as their 3 losses indicate. Not were the Dawgs ever really as bad as their 4 losses indicated or suddenly great due to 3 wins over losing teams. UGA will win this game not because of those records, not because of the 3-17, and not because of Meyer’s open week success rate, but because UGA will win the turnover battle (it’s absurd to think the UK turnovers somehow de-legitimize the UGA win) and because Murray and his receivers have a better match-up v the UF D than Brantley and co do v the UGA D (running and kicking games roughly even). But if Dawgs do lose, it means SEC title dreams this year are over, and one more straw is added to the back of the Richt camel, which is already showing some strain.

At the end of September I wasn’t sure this team could win 4 games all year. Even a win tomorrow does not erase loses to Miss St & Colorado. Sure it will help the Bulldog nation cope better but we’ll all look back and wonder where this team could have been if they didn’t get off to that horrible start.
I think Richt has already saved his job because he’s shown he could rally the troops and the team has improved. I want Georgia to win tomorrow more because Urban sold his morals to play Rainey and make a desperate decision.

The beauty of Richt’s recent winning streak is that he keeps his job at least for another season which is good for the rest of the SEC. He’ll eventually revert back to being mediocre and the premiere SEC teams will continue to cherry pick the best talent in Atlanta and coach them up will he gets his share of talent and coaches them down. There’s never been a fire in Richt that inspires his team to do great things on the field consistently and achieve great results like winning a National Championship. Sure, he says the right things when his job is on the line but this Coach stopped being in the conversation for National Championship years ago. Georgia should be dominate with all the talent that resides in Atlanta just to the West of Athens. The top talent want to play in the BEST conference (SEC) and be in the conversation about winning the National Championship. The best kids do not want to play in the ACC or even less for Georgia Wreck (Tech). They want to play close to home and more importantly for a winner that’s a serious contender for the National Championship every year and not always talking about what could have been and maybe next year.

The four losses created an irrevocable stench around the program
October 29th, 2010
10:09 am
These bleachers do have eyes. AD Greg McGarity will be comparing the two programs and frankly, has been because Florida is THE STANDARD for SEC schools that seek the very upper echelon of play. I am a UGA grad through and through, by the way. Florida is THE standard. Yes, my Dad and his side family are Gators ………….I am the lucky one …………a UGA Dog.
Here is the book on Mark Richt: We all know about the several summer ( s ) of fun and we are disgusted by that. We also know that we have not played at the level that we are paying him for since about 06 or 007. Last year was our obligatory transitional year. We thought.
The four losess fueled by Ealey’ and Caleb’s and Tavaress’ and AJ’s activities created this stench. That disgusting, confused Waushaun Ealey looking so dumb after his fumble in the end zone vs MSU will forever taint our recollections of 2010.
So. MCR must win them all, take UGA to a modest bowl and WIN and then, we hold on for year 2011. THAT YEAR is his make or break year. Lose to Auburn and Florida in 2010 ……………. then he should be fired with his already dismal, dismal 2010 SEC record.
That is how about 75% of the UGA alums feel.

My heart wants the Dawgs to win, but my head reminds me that da Preacha Man is the coach. Rock break scissors, Meyer cover Richt. It’s that simple. Then Richt slips to 2-8 against UF (including the Zook years) and the Georgia brass needs to seriously consider if Richt is the man to lead UGA football into the future. The right coach makes all the difference. Spurrier broke Georgia’s stranglehold on this game; Jim Tressell came along at a time when OSU looked hopelessly jinxed against Michigan and completely turned that series around. At one time in the late 80s early 90s Notre Dame had a 9-game win streak over USC, and then Lou Holtz left and USC returned to prominence and Notre Dame can’t keep up with USC.
Historically Florida is not a better program than Georgia, so there’s no reason why this trend should continue. If Richt isn’t the right man to turn it around, then let’s find the right man, whoever he turns out to be.

This game has a different complexion than any Cocktail Party in memory. The Gators aren’t as bad as every one thinks just as Georgia wasn’t as bad as our 1-4 start seemed to indicate. Further, our 3 game winning streak wasn’t exactly against great teams. I see this game as very evenly matched. The questionable units: UGA’s D vs. UF’s O, face off and the more proven units match up as well. The only advantage that would appear on paper is at kicker and Walsh missed a PAT and a FG last week. A UF blowout seems more unlikely than a UGA blowout simply because UF’s offense has stuggled so much. However, the most likely scenario is that this will be a 60 minute game perhaps similar to 1993 when the winner is determined on the last possession. Hopefully, this one won’t come down to an idiot in stripes like that one did.
In the pre-season, I thought this would be a one-sided game favoring us. Of course, who could have predicted that AJ would be suspended or that UF would have a 3-game losing streak coming in? So, now its gut check game. The team that wants it more wins. I look for a blood bath. Two teams that hate each other and are desperate to win. My over under on personal fouls is 5 and that might be low.
Finally, I don’t know I have this thought but I have a vision of Tavares King being the difference maker. If he catches some deep balls we win, maybe going away.

Until Georgia gets a streak going against UF, you can throw out what the bookies think. You can also throw out records and all the other stats. Mark,
Any other year there would have been 12 pages of comments by now.
This year not many seem to care.
What does a win against Florida mean now anyway?
I don’t think The Dawgs will win.
This year the big game is Bama – and we will lose that one too.

UGA doesn’t play BAMA unless you think both teams make it to the Ga Dome or something crazy like that. I think Auburn and South Carolina still have a lot to say about that.

If UGA does not pull off a win this year, it will be 10 years before the chances and opportunities is this good. Chances of winning this year- 40% . 2011 10% 2012 15%, 2013 25%…
The week off and the weather will make this a toss sweep night for UF.
Vern will be saying “oh my” on Florida’s first drive and Gary will be saying ” it looks like Urban Meyer has worked out his offensive issue during the off week.”
There will be a number of personal foul penalties called on both sides of the ball.
Aaron Murray will be the best and worst player for the Dawgs on Saturday.

If all the ex-pats go home, there goes all the energy in metro Atlanta. So goes Atlanta, so goes Georgia.
If Georgia loses Atlanta, it becomes Missisippi. If you understand this, you went to Tech. If you are hopelessly confused by this, you went to UGA. Which, by the way, will lose on Saturday. You heard it from the source. Mr. Hootin’.

Shouldn’t you be ironing your jorts, getting your weekly showers, combing the lice out of your mullets and getting ready for a big day of drinking PBR and throwing crap at your t.v., then destroying your trailers as your boys get smashed in the mouth tomorrow.
You losers are nervous, evidenced by the large turnout on here, as well as you should be.
The dawgs are confident, the offense is going to shred your silly defense and run the ball down your throats and the defense will do enough to shut down that anemic offense. Justin Houston will be camped out in the backfield all afternoon.

what happens is………..Richt’s worst team loses to Meyer’s worst team and UGA continues to fight through their worst year under Richt. As long as they play well it and continue to show they are improving in the D scheme and on offense, then we continue to build on the turn around. It will be painful to lose like it is anytime we lose to UF. As for the play, like Barnhart said, it looks like we have better players at certain positions, but look at the recruiting rankings per player and you can see that UF is loaded with more talent across the board than we are and their 5 star QB is a redshirt JR. Old enough to drink now. An even bigger question might be……..what if UF loses to UGA in Richt’s worst year? What then if they lose to rival FSU? That would be five losses and doesn’t even take into account the what if……..they lose to South Carolina and former, white and blue, visor thrower Steve Spurrier. What if UF loses these games and ends the season 6-6? There will be some Urban fan bridge jumpers. The pressure is not all on Mark Richt here.

Richt and the Dawgs turned the corner a few weeks ago when Richt abandoned the NFL style no contact practices. Practice em hard and they’ll play hard. And even before that, 3 of our 4 losses were to what we now know to be quality SEC opponents. Georgia was never as bad as Bradley, or the Tech insects or the sky is falling Dawgs fans believed.
Georgia wins, fairly comfortably. Something like 24-10.

Three victories against terrible opponents do not equal four losses against mediocre teams. This Georgia team is still not good. Our secondary can’t cover their butts with both hands. Our players continue to act without any semblance of maturity or class off the field. We average more than a player a month in the police blotters. (11 in ten months.) We continue to recruit people with zero leadership skills, zero moral fiber. It shows on the field in big games. If you surround yourself with garbage, you stink. Until our coaches and recruiters stop looking just at 40-times and bench press pounds and start looking at the character of the player, we will continue to be tallented but mediocre.

Who’s pessimistic? I’m a realist and I am positive. I am positive we are 4-4 with 3 of those losses coming to lesser teams. I am positive the only thing wrong with UGA has been coaching deficiencies to the extreme. I am positive Coach Richt needs a gut check. If you wish to wrap yourself up in optimism, have at it. Let me repeat. Two years ago, Mark Richt proved he could not win with TWO, TWO first round draft picks in his backfield. The following year he proved he could not turn around a mediocre team. And this year, he has proved he can’t even beat programs that are on the decline (UF 34, UGA 31). There are two choices. Hang with Richt and institutionalize mediocrity for at least a decade to come. Or risk having mediocre teams with a new guy, or maybe we get a Chip Kelly or an Urban Meyer, or a Nick Saban, or a even a Les Miles. That’s the choice.

Without Murray UGA loses by at least 3 TD’s. This one is on Richt. He’s like John Cooper at OSU with Michigan. Cooper won a lot of games for Ohio State, but Michigan OWNED them. Richt got out-coached and his players got out-motivated (again). He has to go. Our program is flagging, and confidence is sagging. It’s best for all involved for Richt to move on to another program, and let UGA move on to another coach.

Not too long ago, Larry Munson wailed on radio about the absence of “players” at UGA. He knew that UGA was recruiting players that didn’t measure up. He asked “where are the players” and no one in the booth dared to answer. They knew that players were coming to UGA with lower talent levels AND lower behavioral standards. THIS IS NOW OBVIOUS. Bud you are pathetic. Put on a Jethro Tull album and listen to “Living in the past”
Where you in Jax in 1981 driving a tacky conversion van like all of your breathren during the “good ol’ days?? (with an ugly bulldog head on the spare tire cover)
There was a point when it was 44-15-2. Keep that in mind.

I’m not so sure even the fly on the the wall would stick around to hear what McGarity will have to say when he meets with Richt after this game. Yesterday we once again handed the outcome of the Georgia/Florida game over on a silver platter to a Florida team who was having a hard time beating their way out of a wet paper bag with a hole in it. When Murray threw that first pick I got a bad feeling that, this is not going to be good. His first 5 passes were misses being either underthrown or sailing on him. In his defense I thought I saw him shaking his throwing hand like he took a hit on it during that first series of plays which brings me to the point of coaches having players prepared. Florida was having problems all year with Brantly taking control of the team after Teabow and knew that if they were going to win this game he had to do something different. So he prepares not one but three quarterbacks in a week to carry out his gameplan while on the other hand Georgia coaches could not prepare Joe Cox in five years. Georgia has good coaches that have taken this program as far as they can. They can’t make the adjustments needed to assure victory during the course of the game. Case in point being we sacked Florida early but their coaches adjusted to counter our attack and they were able to move the ball and score. And what’s with the kicking game? We did not put the ball into or out of the endzone on kickoff but rather allowed Florida to start at the 40 or better the biggest part of the game.
I think the writing is on the wall that McGarity want’s more for this program than Richt can give and change is in the air.

Record is 47-40-2. You don’t count our last 7 wins? Hard to believe that 21 years ago the series record was Ga 44, UF 22, 2 ties!!!

It is NOT a home game for the Gators. They travel an hour and half by bus, stay in a hotel, and are not playing in the swamp. Yes, Georgia travels further, but flies (all paid for) and technically spends less time traveling as it is a 45 minute flight. The stadium is always sold out, half Florida and half Georgia. I live in Jacksonville and I remember as a kid, when Georgia won every single year, not once did they mention moving the game. Stop finding lame excuses for your losing streak against Florida. It’s not the venue thats the problem.
Plus Georgia (and Florida) make millions off this one game. It’s a win win for both schools.

Mark Richt is no longer a viable option for U.G.A. His passion for Georgia football took a hit when he was forced to change defensive coordinators. The defense is much improved, but sadly, the offense continues to invent ways to lose games. The Dawgs are 13-11 over the last 24 games. The administation gave Richt a pass last year, its way past time for a new coach!!
