Athens – Earlier this week I posed the musical question, “Where did it all go wrong for Mark Richt?” Walking into Sanford Stadium this morning, I got the musical answer.
The Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana song “Party in the USA” was playing over the stadium’s PA, and nobody who has followed Georgia football can hear that song without wincing. Not because the song is awful — it isn’t, and this is coming from someone who has seen Miley/Hannah in person — but because of the unfortunate orientation video in which the Bulldogs’ coach had a cameo.
Richt has since rued his participation, describing the “Party in the UGA” video as “awful.” But I respectfully submit that nothing has been the same for this program since Richt partook of the infamous “party.”
Today Georgia plays Tennessee, which is coached by Derek Dooley, whose dad was the greatest UGA coach ever and who hired Richt. Vince Dooley has said he won’t attend today’s game but will root (for his son) from his famous home on Milledge Circle. And if Richt loses to young Dooley, the current Georgia coach might not attend next week’s game or any thereafter.
OK, I’m exaggerating. Richt isn’t getting canned no matter what happens here. But what happens here will go a ways toward determining Richt’s quality of life going forward. As bad as it has been for the Bulldogs, imagine if they lost at home to an even worse bunch of Vols coached by the offspring of Vincent and Barbara.
Enough. I can’t imagine it. And I don’t think it will happen. I think Georgia will beat Tennessee. I also think it had darn well better.
(Speaking of Barbara Dooley: She’s here. She’s wearing, if you can believe it, red slacks and an orange sweater.)
And with that, the floor is open for comments, questions and nominations for Georgia’s next coach. (Kidding! I’m a kidder!) I’ll be here all day, and I’d appreciate if you’d … er, join the party. Speaking of which:

Why did the TV announcers just show a tribute to Vince Dooley? Dooley was just a two-bit sleazebag who created the football factory in Athens that Jan Kemp courageously exposed.
Dooley should be in the Football Hall of Shame.

In the 1986 Jan Kemp trial, O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for UGA, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
That trial exposed UGA for the football factory that it was, and exposed Vince Dooley as a fraud and a sleazebag. It also derailed Dooley’s plans for a political career. That’s why we see the decrepit old fraud doing TV commercials even now.
Mark Richt is just the latest in a line of sleazy UGA coaches who coddle athletes and discard them after four years of football. He recruits illiterate morons he knows aren’t smart enough for college, but he doesn’t care, as long as they help him line his pockets with millions of dollars each year.
Suntanned Saint Mark isn’t all he appears to be, is he?

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.
