Viral video: The ‘Mark Teixeira’ songsters say ‘Thanks Bobby’

The Mark Teixeira trade wasn’t an Atlanta Braves highlight: It did nothing for them in the standings and rid them of two young players — shortstop Elvis Andrus and closer Neftali Feliz — who have helped the Texas Rangers win the American League West. But the 2007 trade was memorable for one thing:

The song (and accompanying YouTube video) “Mark Teixeira” by two Auburn students who called themselves “Tito and the Gun Show.” (Real names: Andrew Hall and Tyler Crawford.) And today I bring happy news:

They’re back.

With a song (and accompanying YouTube video) called, “Thanks Bobby.” (And if you’re asking, “Bobby Who?,” you’re reading the wrong blog.)

The new magnum opus is of a piece with “Mark Teixeira” — one guitar being strummed (by Hall), two guys sitting on a beige couch, wordplay run riot.

Key points of reference in “Thanks Bobby”: A hotel lobby, a lumberjack, plaid, ejections, a pier, chin-nose-chin, Ann Boleyn, a fat kid and pie.

I’m not going to say it trumps “Teixeira,” which even after three years makes me laugh out loud, but I like this one, too. And it does seem particularly timely, wouldn’t you say?

But enough of me. Here you go.

(Oh, and if you’d like a “Thanks Bobby” T-shirt for the weekend … you can click here to browse. The one Crawford is wearing is nice, but I like the one pictured above — with the thumb.)

Because nothing says “Bobby Cox” like a thumb.

We’d say the same thing.

Nice song. The Tex trade is one of my pet peeves so I have to comment since you brought it up. There is no doubt that Feliz is a fine young pitcher and the Braves would love to have him back. Beyond him, I don’t think the Braves lost all that much. If you look at Andrus’s numbers, there really isn’t anything all that special about him. This season he hit .264 with 0 homers and 35 RBI with an OPS of .640. Yes he stole 32 bases and scored 86 runs but I would submit that on that team, with such great offensive firepower, he should have scored more than 86 runs hitting leadoff. He also showed no progression from last year to this year. Prado scored 100 runs for the Braves and didn’t bat leadoff fulltime and missed significant time for a team with far less firepower than Texas. I know it’s fashionable to say that the Braves got fleeced in that deal, but it’s really not all that bad. As good as Feliz is, the Braves have several young arms to replace him.

We was always playing ball and when we was we had a teammate by the name of Chester Drawers. He was always getting kidded about that name but it never phased him a bit. One time, Chester hit a ball so hard that it knocked a hole in the cement block wall of the concession stand. From that time on, everybody knew that Chester Drawers was not somebody to mess with. Bobby Cox is like that right now. We would never ask what that is stuck to the thumb on that tee shirt.

Chicks dig the long ball. Bobby will be missed, that is for sure. Hall of Fame manager and nobody can take that away from him even if I personally will never forgive him for bringing in Charlie Liebrandt.

i want to see the playoff crash happen just to get rid of this geezer – most overrated manager in the history of sports. More talent than the competition in most years and his ability to make people comfortable and not motivate anyone is legendary. Please take terry pendleton with you – this guy would even make tony gwynn a .250 hitter

Thanks Bobby!

These guys did a great job! Like MB said, you can get a shirt for this weekend – but also if you order one with regular shipping you can be part of the Thanks Bobby Scrapbook that the movement is putting together to give to Bobby Cox! Find Thanks Bobby! on facebook for more info – post your photo wearing the shirt with your thanks & retirement wishes for #6 and you’ll be in a scrapbook that we’ve made arrangements with the Braves to present to him. Go Braves & Thanks Bobby!

Thanks Bobby!

The Teixeira trade wouldn’t've looked so bad if the Braves were willing to pay the man to keep him here. The Yankees would not have won the World Series last year without him, and the Braves would not be fighting for a wildcard spot right now WITH him.

Mark, in a season of unpredictable turns, what happens if the Padres sweep the Giants and the Braves take only 1 of 3 from Philly. All 3 teams will have the same record. Who plays who for the playoff spots?
