Live from the ballyard: The Lowe-down on a big-game pitcher

Derek Lowe started Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS in the old Yankee Stadium. No pressure there. Only 85 years of Red Sox angst bottled into one night in the Bronx.

He won the game. Went on two days’ rest. Pitched six innings, yielded one hit and one earned run.

One week later, Derek Lowe started Game 4 of the World Series in the old Busch Stadium. No pressure there. Only the Curse of the Bambino and all that other sad New England history to put to rest.

He won the game. Pitched seven innings, yielded three hits and no runs.

Yeah, 2004 was a while ago — but not so long as 1918 was to Red Sox Nation — and we in Atlanta haven’t seen much of that D-Lowe in his two seasons here. But the Braves signed him for $15 million per annum for two reasons: First, Lowe never misses a start, and second, he’s a big-game pitcher.

Lowe missed one start this season. It came early this month after he received a cortisone shot for the bone chip in his elbow. He’s 4-0 since. He has yielded three earned runs in 25 September innings. He’s the reason the Braves lead the wild card chase by 1 1/2 games with four to play. He has done what even Tim Hudson couldn’t do — won big games by the bunch.

A lot of people wanted rid of Lowe after last season, Frank Wren chief among them. But the GM couldn’t find anybody willing to take that salary, and you know what? Sometimes the best trades (all together now) …

Are the ones you don’t make. The Braves would have been long gone without D-Lowe, and today they dispatch him to the hill again. He’s pitching on three days’ rest. Doesn’t matter. He’s Derek Lowe. He’s a gamer.

And with that, the floor is open for questions, comments and postseason projections. (I think the Braves will play the Giants in Round 1.) I’ll be here until the end of this strangely timed — game time is 4:35 p.m. — tilt, and I’d be obliged if you’d ride along. And I offer my thanks in advance.

I’ll be watching from Kincardine, Ontario on the MLB package, as a former resident of PTC/Sharpsburg/Jonesboro for about 22 years and recently Knoxville, TN I’ve been missing October Braves baseball… Born and raised 50 miles north of Philly, I became a full time Braves fan in ‘82 when I moved to Peachtree City after living north of Clearwater for 4 years, yes I had to Celebrate the ‘80 Phils win by myself, so my allegiance is with the BRAVES!!!!

D-Lowe. Wow. I was the only one amongst my friends that was glad he wasn’t gone before this season started. Look now. I’m sure Lowe will pitch great today.
The only thing that would be cooler? If Ankiel comes in to pitch a 1-2-3 inning before the season ended.

How about some reverse psychology? I think Lowe has lost it. He’s not a gamer anymore. He’s not much of anything anymore besides an older average pitcher. He won’t win tonight. The Braves will lose this game big – 8 to 1. Afterwards, I’ll be gloating because I predicted it perfectly.

Mark: You say the Braves would have been long gone, but for Lowe. But you can’t know that unless you know who would have replaced him, if he had hypothetically been traded over the offseason. Nor should we forget that there have been games earlier this season where his performance essentially caused us to lose. Those games matter just as much in the standings as the one this afternoon.

I unfortuately have to agree with you that if we make the playoffs it will be the Giants in the first round. They are a game up on Cincy for the #2 seed, and they also hold the tiebreaker advantage with a better head to head record. I do feel Cincy would be a better matchup, but at this point, get in and take our chances with whomever, right?

If Atlanta wins the next 4, they are in. If Atlanta wins next 3, they are in because San Diego would need to win their remaining 5. If they do win their remaining 5, that give the Giants 3 losses and push them behind Atlanta. If Atlanta wins 2, we’re guaranteed at least a tie.

It should be noted that both the Padres and the Giants have one more game to play than the Braves do. The Braves are off tomorrow but both of them play. Then on Friday they begin a 3 game set against each other to finish the season.

If the Braves can win this afternoon then the Padres have to win tonight and tomorrow against the Cubs just to remain 1 game behind the Braves going into the final 3 games.

The other issue currently is that the Giants are one game ahead of the Reds for the next best record of a divisional winner. If that stays the same then the Phils would open with the Reds and the Braves, if they can hold on, would open with the Giants.

Of course with 4 and 5 games remaining anything can happen. The Padres could sweep the Giants and win the division, as longs as the Pads and Giants have the same results in the next two games.

The Braves are currently one game back in the loss column to the Giants. No telling how many ups and downs there will be between now and Sunday night.

At that point the Braves would have 90 wins, the Padres would be 87-72 with a best possible record of 90-72 (to tie the Braves). However if the Pads reached 90 wins that would mean the Giants lost all 5 of their remaining games to finish 89-73.

At a point like this in the season, early-season mistakes loom so big. That 9-game losing streak? If we even go 3-6 in that stretch instead of 0-9, we’re in the playoffs already, 2 games behind Philly and the best overall record in baseball.

If we can win this game, then we’d have to collapse against the Phillies this weekend for us to not win the Wild Card.

For instance, if we win today, the “worst” that our lead would be would be 1 game over either the Padres OR Padres/Giants. If the Padres won both today and tomorrow against the Cubs…we’d be 1 game up on them. If the Giants won both days as well against the D-backs….then they’d be up 2 on the Padres.

The ideal thing would be to see the Giants either lose one or both of the next two games OR the Padres lose the next two games.

Regardless, after tomorrow’s games, we’ll have a pretty clear idea of what needs to happen this weekend. The main thing is that the Padres-Giants are playing each other.

I also noticed in batting practise last night that Farnsworth went up on the wall a couple of times trying to rob bp homeruns, including once when he hit his ribs on the top wall. Is that really a smart thing for a pitcher to be doing, especially in a pennant race ? Someone should have a conversation with him.

Back-ups today really shining. Conrad and Ross putting the wood to the ball and DRIVING it.

If Lowe continues to pitch this way, then the Braves will have options concerning Lowe this off season. Suddenly 2 years/$30 mil doesnt look like such a big flop. A team with starting pitching needs could make us a good offer for Lowe.

Remember, we need offense……and given that we have $42 mil tired up in Lowe, Chipper, McLousy and Kawacrappy in 2011…..and that Jurrjens and Prado are dude substantial raises in salary arbitration……..the only way I see the Braves having enough money to improve the offense….is to free up some payroll (like trading Lowe and his $15 mil a year contract).

If Chipper was will to retire (meaning that he’d be leaving $13 mil a year in 2011 and 2012), then maybe the Braves could keep Lowe and still improve the offense. However, I dont see Chipper walking away from that kind of money.

Bobby relies on his medical staff, david s. Clearly they aren’t giving him good information. We let players try to fight through injuries on the field. Remember, we let Jordan Schafer play for 2 months with a BROKEN WRIST. No way Bobby knew about that. That’s up to the medical staff to pull guys aside and be more involved. You can’t just trust players to know. They’re going to want to play, and they are going to tell you things are fine, even if they are not.

Mark Bradley

If Derek Lowe is not NL Player of the Month for September there is something majorly wrong with how they decide the award. He has a 0.90 ERA in 30 innings and is on the verge of being 5-0 for the month.

The braves are on the cusp of winning the Wild Card, and D-Lo is a mojor reason they are there.

The Marlins were nice sending this looser Andrew Miller to the box today, I hope if Moron Cox wants to retire in a decent way, from now on, he has to place on the field a more agresive line-up, sacrifiying defense and if they are ahead on the game then bringing the defendors like Lee who doesn’t scare nobody as a clean-up hitter!!!!
Conrad responded again today!!!, and Moron Cox had him in the bench, he is playing because we lost Prado (a high price toll), even Ross is doing much better than Mc Cann, this team is not that bad is just Moron Cox Loyalty selected player that make it look so bad.

I’m sorry, for how volatile starting pitching can be as an investment, us getting what we have gotten so far from Lowe is not a bust. Last season was sub-par, I will concede that. But any pitcher that eats innings like Lowe and has an ERA in the high 3’s is worth a pretty penny. Ask the Yankees if they wish they would have taken Lowe over Vazquez from us. Returning to my previous comment for the next game he has to seat Lee, he is a great 1st base defendor but not hitting one of the worst pitchers in the mayors is telling you that he is not seeing the baall, anyway we have two choices: Troy and Hinske, depending on the pitcher and they did it for us all season long before the front office inability to find the piece of hitter the team requires to go on. and launches Lee (a 250 hitter!!!!).

I told my cousin early in the season that I thought we should be happy we kept Lowe and got rid of Vasquez. Vasquez had a career season last year and Lowe would probably bounce back. Glad it worked out that way.

Lowe is a gamer. If you team stinks, he will not put them on his back all season, but you put him pressure cooker, and he will conjure up his best. One thing he has done for 2 years is make adjustments. Glad he is on our team. Where is Jake Peavy now?

Lowe has proven his value in big games and in taking the ball every 5th day or 3rd day as needed. Remember he was the fallback option after AJ Burnett turned down $80M+. With AJ and his 15 losses for a 1st place team likely dropped from the rotation and maybe the playoff roster, I am happy we had to go to Lowe as our fallback.

As a Sawx fan, thanks Mark for the ‘04 references for D Lowe. Good times. The bottom line in 2010 is win and get in. We still can’t seem to break anything open. Gonzo is struggling. But we did what we had to do – sweep the Fish. This Braves team by all rights should be 20 games out. Ain’t it fun?

The Braves pitching has been awesome! Lowe was really good today; the best I’ve seen him. He is defintely a cold weather pitcher. The bullpen has been fantastic! Just imagine how good this team would be if we had a couple more quality hitters in the line up. They’d be good enough to really challenge the Phillies.
After the misery of losing to the Pirates/Phils/Nats—it has become fun again. We are back in this thing!

Bradley, I’m soooo glad I went down to the ballpark today! :)

Lowe may be warming up for the playoff run. Remember a few of those big playoff games he has pitched in recent years.

Huddy/Hanson/Lowe would be a formidable rotation in a short series, and I’m encouraged by JJ’s bullpen session…those 4 guys healthy would give me hope again.

Bobby HAS to be considered for MANAGER OF THE YEAR this year! He has done soo much with so little…I mean, it was laughable when i was looking at our lineup tonight…the averages went something like this…

326
279
255
255
259
286
262

Something like that. To see that we have only ONE .300 hitter on our lineup these days after Prado’s injury, and Infante didn’t even play the entire year. :)
