Live from Ga. Tech, where N.C. State hopes to drive safely

The North Carolina State Wolfpack arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson late Friday afternoon, just in time for what we Atlantans know to be the absolute worst traffic period of any week. The Wolfie entourage piled into four chartered buses for the ride up the Downtown Connector to their Buckhead hotel.
Buses 1 and 4 made it.
Buses 2 and 3 ran into each other.
According to Debbie Yow, State’s athletic director, the bus drivers weren’t at fault. Apparently pesky Atlanta motorists kept buzzing between the buses, who were endeavoring to stay in formation. Buses 2 and 3 were rendered inoperative after 3 rear-ended 2 — one of them needed to have its door pried open — and no other charter coaches were available for rescue duty and the only solution was for Buses 1 and 4 to drop their passengers at the hotel and return for the occupants of 2 and 3.
“We weren’t crazy about the idea of 60 people walking by the side of I-75,” Yow said.
Long story short: Everybody eventually got to the hotel, and nobody was injured. And the State party made it to Bobby Dodd Stadium for today’s noon start without difficulty. And we’re 44 minutes from kickoff as I type, and I’m intrigued to see how Georgia Tech handles an ACC opponent at full strength. (North Carolina worked without 12 men last Saturday in Chapel Hill.)
I’m assuming Tech will win, but State has been better than advertised, and its victory over Cincinnati was one of the few early games this beleaguered league can identify as a point of pride.
And with that, the ajc.com blogline is open for questions, observations and lamentations about the Braves. I’m here to watch and report — and I’m happy to say that I feel much better this Saturday than I did a week ago in Chapel Hill — and I’d appreciate if you’d, er, come along for the ride.

Tech fans made jokes last week about UGA having the Noon ESPN slot……
But truly, this slot is the WORST possible if you are a fan trying to watch the game. It is like watching SportsCenter, and then cutting back to cover a play, then back to the Update Desk for more. I have followed Paul Johnson since before he was a head coach at GA Southern. My cousin actually played on a couple of those ’90’s championship teams. I do understand what this offense looks like when it’s running full tilt. In the GA So. and Navy days, there was never much passing. About the same as has been the case last year and this year at Tech. I agree with the Tech fans, it does look good when it’s operating well. The ACC has been down for several years, when the good teams are playing well in the ACC, Tech won’t sniff a title running a RUN primarily offense. When the Miami’s and FL State’s and VA Tech’s get back to real BCS competitive levels GA Tech will need some sort of passing game incorporated into this offense. I’m thinking of the West VA (White/Slaton) type of offense.

Its pretty obvious watching this game that NC State is a better football team then we are. Wow how things can change in a year. Our defense seems to have gotten worse somehow.

I’m surprised at the impact losing those four players have had on the team. I knew it wasn’t just ‘the system’, but I figured it had a better chance of turning average players into a difficult to beat team. Looks like we need superstars just as much as anyone. Too bad.

This team just isn’t the same without Demayrius Thomas. He kept defenses in check with the threat of the deep ball. Tech has zero threat in the passing game. Dfenses only have to worry about playing the run.

i think it safe to say that uga 3-4 defense is waaay better than techs as well as the players. offense really misses dwyer who was a chan gaily recruit, so i doubt tech will ever have a back like that playing for them with PJ there. i just hope tech keeps there word and let pj ride out his contract. with him there UGA has an automatic win for the last game of the year.

I like CPJ but what I adamantly disagree with him about is hiring coaches from other schools with losing records. I realize these people you know and they are your friends, but they are LOSERS and that is why they were fired in the first place. McCollum was fired at Mid Tn St and Groh was fired at Va, why in the name of God would they all of a sudden be an asset to GT? They are not going to bring more wins instead they are going to drag the team down to more losses because that is all they know all to do. N C At was 5-7 last year with McCollum as well, I do not know why CPJ hires these people. Now NCS ST has Tenuta and we have chicken $hit. Offensive execution has been absolutely horrendous today. Nesbit hasn’t handled the ball well in option, and his passing has been absolutely horrible.
I still love the triple option attack, but you still have to execute. You have to make the blocks, make the reads, handle the ball, and hit the open receivers when they have 3 yards on the corners and are streaking down the field.
Defense played well enough the first half, but has stunk it up in the 3rd quarter. Can’t just sit and play 1o yards off receivers with Wilson back there.. He is eating us up.

Did Navy ever pass when CPJ was coach? If they did not and won at least 8-9 games then why are we? Because media and no account idiots say we have to? CPJ needs to keep with the plan that brought him to where he is now. If the true triple option is to run, then run. I feel sorry for Nesbitt, this was poor game calling today. And again like I mentioned in previous comments, we just laid down and let NC State call the shots in jerseys and everything else on our own home field like they are the truth of anything. And we have coaches on the GT staff that have no idea how to win assist in calling the shots, they can do nothing but drag this team down to mediocre nothingness. CPJ, you just need to start over and regroup.

I didn’t think that I’d ever leave a game in the third quarter after Chan left, but after Nesbitt ran it up the middle on third and fourth down and got stuffed in the third, I had enough of the heat. Groh needs to go and Tech needs someone besides Nesbitt in there for passing like Kansas did. We were way too predictiable in the first half today with selfish Joshua back in there today.

My ala mater UGA is absolutely no good this year but we will get a coach, maybe NC State’s COACH and we will be fine in 2011, 12,13. Life will go on after Pastor Richt is gone.
Now ………as for GT. Wow. You all have lost to UGA ( we in 09 were also lousy, right?) and to Iowa and to Kansas and now to NC State. Um, ah, um, that is four losses to really no body schools out of 6 games. GT has lost 4 games out of their last 6. This is a trend and it concretely proves my point which is: GT cannot win in big boy ball with that triple wishbone 1960-70s offense. IF you play schools that get fairly decent D athletes that can run ……….you will lose.
GT ……………big boy ball in any major conference like SEC, Big 12 or Big Ten or Murphey-Candler in Dunwoody or Bing Miller Pop Warner in East Point, you would lose big.
Small ball it is.
Final comment ………..since 1967, GT sees their footbal coach leave every 3.5 years. Too many of them to name but they leave every 3.5 years and CPJ is nearing that benchmark. Not good with all of this failure happening around the Flats.

As a Georgia Tech graduate who lived in Raleigh, NC for nearly 10 years. There is no team or group of fans in the country that I can’t stand more than NC State. Seeing this pathetic GT team get trounced the way they did by a very good NC State team hurts and it hurts a lot. The worst thing is the fact that GT does not have the so much promised improved defense. At this rate, tech will only be a mediocre program for years to come. The Kansas game will, for the rest of the season, be a cruel reminder of the kind of program we have this year!!!!!

Last season we couldn’t stop anybody on defense but nobody could stop us on offense. This year we get stopped probably 1/3 of the time and we still cant stop anybody on defense. That will be the difference in an 11 win season and a 7-8 win season. We cant win the shootouts this year.

Question about the lineup on that blocked punt….Tech left about a five yard hole in the middle and two guys cam flying thru unimpeded. Was that a mistake in the line-up or a stupid formation?

I’m speechless. I think the game was won or lossed in the first two GT possessions. Believe me, I can harp on GT defense all day – how did they let that WR behind three DB/SS for a TD? Have our CB ever been tought how to defend? Seems like they wait till the ball is in the WR hands then try to get the ball… but then again, I’ve seen shotty performances from or CB for 15 years.
Anyway, going 3 and out on our first two possesions of the game lost the game. I blame this one on CPJ… I have to agree that he may not be a great motivator.

Hate to say it guys, but it could be a long year. We might have seen it coming but CPJ is only 2- 4 in his last 6 games , with only one of those losses coming against a team with arguably better talent (Iowa). Teams that have ,or take , extra time to prepare for us are stopping the offense . Look back : Georgia , Iowa , Kansas ( obviously weren’t preparing for NDSU) and now NCSU with a weak opponent the week before. If we don’t get a real, viable passing game that opponents have to respect at all times, not just when we surprise them, we will not win seven games this year.

Actuall Nesbitt is a pretty good quarterback, he got no help, first time that is players fault, second time shame on coaches, find players who can help Nesbitt out even if you have to start all freshman. GT does the best it can for the 3 stars it gets, UGA you are loaded with 5 stars and what do you have to show for it? N O T H I N G..except 9 arrest and an athletic director who had to resign in shame, players have to sit out games for NCAA violations, what’s the upperhand in that?
Maybe our President will agree to a curriculum for a standard business or physical fitness degree where you do not have to take engineering calculus or science and then we can recruit the same dummies you do.. Keep all other engineering degrees but have one more program where we can recruit the players it takes to compete with the Bamas of the world.

GA Tech is going to have to figure out a way to effectively throw the football because when they get behind in the score, the offense, the way that it is designed, cannot overcome a deficit. Please work on Nesbitt throwing the ball to receivers as oppose to working on the running attack. If that doesn’t improve, it is going to be a long…….losing season.

Since I’m mad the alma mater didn’t win, I use my ramblinrecluse pen name now. We needed a pro-style shotgun offense. State ran one when they needed to get downfield, and ran a QB taking the snap under the center offense if they were knocking on the door like Tech ran on every play. I said this about a shotgun offense last year after the Orange Bowl. An aggressive defense can tackle and sack if the ball is snapped in the middle of a traffic jam. That’s what Iowa did, and that’s what State did. If CPJ cannot figure out that that’s what Tech needs, he’ll get fired, maybe even during the season. Also, more blitzing was needed than was shown. On State’s last td pass, Tech had linemen rushing, DBs covering, and where were the LBs on the tv screen? Not in the picture. Not near the ball. Tech’s gotta blitz every time an offense lines up in a shotgun, or else they will give yardage up. And they need to do a better job of gambling on the opposing team passing on plays. The lack of offensive imagination since the Orange Bowl spells the end of CPJ. Teams now have Tech’s rushing number, and will force them to diversify, or else CPJ is out. And the drop back passes from snaps right under the center allow defensive rushes because they are snapped in traffic. Nesbitt runs back to pass along with DLs. A shotgun would free him from them for a longer period of time. CPJ cannot figure out how teams use this pro offense and move downfield with it when yardage and field position is needed. State taught that to him today. Tech is stubborn to not admit that they need to run shotguns. If CPJ doesn’t open up the offense into a wide open traffic situation, I will write the Athletic Association as a graduate and request that he be dismissed, and state my reasons why. The reason the Interstates were widened in Atl from two lanes to six was because of traffic jams from wrecks in the 70’s when I was at Tech. People were not getting to work on time. CPJ’s coaching right out of the 70’s, and that aint gonna cut it now with shotgun formations allowed. Other defenses will swarm all over the run to the sidelines and up the middle traffic jam option offense. It’s too limited. It’s shotgun city time.

what GT needs is a physical fitness degree program in addition to all the engineering programs so we are able to recruit and sign the same players the SEC schools have. As much as people want to blame him, he has absolutely NO help on that team. Everyone who said pieces that left in the first round last year would just be replaced no problem were foolish.

Tell me about your genius coach. He is a 1AA or High School coach at best. Not an offensive genius. He is, however, offensive. Anyone who has been around him will agree. I am truly happy that this obnoxius, conceited, lying, cheating coach, got his member handed to him today. I pray that CPJ has won his last game in the history of his coaching career. CPJ and GT sucks.

I have had it. I say Fire Paul Johnson…he does not know football. Our defense is worse this season, our offense is worse….everything is worse. We are regressing back to Bill Lewis football. I have had enough of this….Paul Johnson talks a lot of smack. He should shut his mouth and go to an offensive seminar or something …geesh.

Paul Johnson is going to regret hiring Al Groh has defensive coordinatory. I root for UVA in the ACC. Their defenses were horrible with the 3-4 and now GT’s defense is. Georgia will also find out the 3-4 will not work. What top defenses in college run a 3-4? There is none. Groh is too hard headed to change and Johnson was stupid for hiring him.

Congratulations to NC State. They came out and whooped us today. This was clearly a team loss. Way too many mistakes on offense, but some of that was forced by some pretty good D from NC State. Josh had an absolutely horrible game. Receivers were open in several situations, and Josh just missed them (badly). Not sure what the problem is with his throwing. Maybe those who say he takes too many hits to throw consistently are correct. In any event, the plays were there, we just didn’t execute.
Defense was decent the first half, but just mailed it in for second half. Give some credit to Wilson and his receivers. Wilson does a great job of taking what the defense gives him, and his receivers made some big time catches. I don’t think he’s got an NFL arm, but he and Ponder at FSU are the best in the Conference by far.
Special teams?? What can you say. They nearly blocked the first punt. Hard to believe we didn’t correct the blocking scheme before the second one.
Very disappointed in results thus far this season. Guess we will be living for a shot at beating the puppies in November.

Personally I thought Tech had it after the interception. That momentum was there. Can’t lay the blame on Nesbitt. He did all he can. D gave up a lot of yards, but in defense of your defense, pardon the pun, during practice they don’t get to work out and practice much on their passing defense. When you have a good QB up against them he will be tough to stop. That is the downfall about running the offense that CPJ does. Defense mostly practices during the week to stop the run. That just gets the offense ready.
I still say tech will be fine this year. Both of our defenses(Dawgs) need some serious adjustments. Good luck to tech on the next game. They’ll be alright!

I see 5 losses this year and all we are playing for now is to beat UGA and a pre-Christmas bowl (SH#%!) NO defense=a few losses in the ACC. Offense does not win games. I also don’t see any heart with this team. Only hope now is that UGA is also having a sub-par year. Should be a good game in November though.

Agreed we need to learn to tackle, but not sure I agree we are in position to make plays either.. Our corners play too soft and we get no pressure unless we blitz. I guess the DBs are being told to keep the play in front of them and don’t give up big plays, but it’s painful watching. The receivers are wide open.

I just love it when someone called a genius is exposed as a fraud. Gosh, Many coaches could be successful if given the chance to coach in the ACC. Nothing personal giver. drstrangelovejr, ok. CPJ just lost one of his few losses…not sure that he’s been ‘exposed’ as you suggest…he just added another loss. MANY coaches have come to the ACC and struggled to win as many as CPJ has…the man is a genius, but he’s not perfect…we’ll keep him around with the best of hopes.

I still say Ga Tech goes 9-3 and only loses to UGA. Nesbitt is not a bad QB, but he does have a worse OL, and no Dwyer/Thomas to go to. And the DC from last year got a bad rap. Bad talent and depth, not bad coaching. And installing a 3-4 takes time – ask Todd Grantham. Now Tech has been recruiting D like crazy, and next year will be very good defensively – just not this year.

PJ brought Groh on so he has someone to point at and shout ‘fire’ when this season goes down in flames. Exactly how is Paul Johnson a genius? If UNC wasn’t embroiled in some sort of shady player/tutor controversy this would be loss number 2.

I have to say honestly the play calling was awful, if it isn’t working call something else. CPJ I still think you are the best coach GT has ever had in my lifetime but some of the play calling was not helping Nesbitt at all. Looking at some of the replay, Nesbitt did not do a bad job. He had no help from anyone to catch a blanking thing as usual. I thought the short pass by Allen was a good play and Allen probably should be utilized more in that role. But his BBack position, he isn’t getting the job done and maybe nobody else on this team can do any better, but I would hold tryouts and find out. When you drop the ball twice, it is time to bench him, move him back to Aback or again utilize him as a receiver on those short passes. He has been a letdown at BBack. When Nesbitt cannot get anyone to catch a pass or help him out rushing, what the blank his he suppose to do?
And once again, the defense did very little with the exception of Jefferson and Tarrant. Why is that? If the defensive scheme is too difficult for these kids to understand, can you simplify it? I disagree with GT coaches post game comments about NC St being a real good team. I disagree they aren’t. And our team underplays or has for 2 and a half games. I am also not crazy about hiring coaches that come from losing programs. I understand these people are your friends but that doesn’t cut it in football. Why would GT hire anyone that came from NC State with a 5-7 record in 2009? What did this person contribute? All coaches on losing teams are partly responsible, they just are. I would rather you hire someone from a smaller winning team hungry to show you what he can do. And AJC, why did you Tweeter about what a touching moment it was to see McCollum before the game at mid field talking to the NC St coaches. Touching moment for who? One of the worst decisions CPJ made besides hiring Groh. All losers know how to do is lose. They said that Navy beat Wake in 09 and never threw the ball, well maybe that is what we need to do since noone can help Nesbitt out on a consistent basis. Also, why cannot AJC GT writers listen to the CPJ radio show last Wed. night? CPJ announced NC State said no to the white jerseys. CPJ wasn’t happy about it and what can he do? He said something to the effect that maybe fans/students can protest and do something about it. It was the GT student body that decided white out day a long time ago. NC St did that on purpose as a classless act and GT should have told them to shove it and acknowledge to the world what a bunch of jerks they are instead of the beat writers acting like they doesn’t understand why GT had the white out day in the first place. That was a story you guys could have taken and gone with it staring on Wed. night but you had no idea because you did not hear CPJ on his radio show talk about it. Shame on AJC too.
