"Down goes Red Man! Down goes Red Man!" (AP photo)
Philadelphia — Patrons at an Eagles game infamously pelted Santa Claus with snowballs, but Philly fans weren’t booing Matt Diaz. On the contrary, the Braves’ outfielder became a local hero for his sidling takedown of an individual who has come already to be known as Red Man. (Not to be confused with Mark Redman, former lousy Braves’ pitcher.)
Seventh inning, Monday night, Jayson Werth batting: Red Man, clad in red spandex head-to-toe, capers from the left-field stands and heads across the outfield. Watching from the press box, you could see that Diaz, stationed in left, thought about impeding Red Man’s progress but decided against it.
Then, when security forces arrived and forced Red Man back left but started slipping in their pursuit, Diaz took matters unto his own hip.
He blindsided Red Man. Stuck out his right leg and Red Man went flying. “He got right up, but then the security guy crushed him,” Diaz said afterward.
Diaz was the postgame focal point in the Braves’ clubhouse because an intruding fan here had been tasered by a security man earlier this season. “I saw the cop coming with the Taser,” Diaz said. “I figured the guy would rather have me trip him than get tased.”
Wait a second, a Philly writer asked: Did he really see someone with a Taser? (I told you: They take this seriously up here.) “No,” Diaz said. “I was kidding.”
Diaz’s stated motivation: He remembered a Braves’ security guard getting hurt in a similar chase a while back. “I wanted to spear [Red Man] so bad, but I didn’t want to get hurt and I didn’t want to hurt him. I just stuck out my foot and he hit it.”
I asked if Red Man had, in their moment of close proximity, revealed his secret identity. “No,” Diaz said. “I’m sure the judge will find it.”
Red Man’s reaction to being tripped? He was shocked, Diaz said, adding that he could see the mystery man’s wide eyes through the costume.
And the Philly fans? They cheered Diaz, who tipped his cap. And who told reporters afterward: “They were very complimentary. I heard everything from, ‘I just put you on YouTube‘ to a girl with an ‘Utley marry me’ sign say, ‘I’ll marry you, too.’ ”
Speaking of YouTube … here you go.

Give Diaz free cheesesteaks and Tastykakes for life! (Uh… don’t eat the cheesesteaks less than two hours before a game; your heart will explode.)
Latest news up here in Philly is that “Red Man” was a 17 year-old kid, whose parent were not rushing to juvi lockup to bail him out.
The downside to having as many sellouts as we have a CBP (110+ in a row and counting), is the increased likelihood of idiots, morons, and knuckleheads showing up to do stupid things or attempt to grab attention (also a stupid thing).
What gives this incident a topping of idiocy to go with his stupidity is that he’ll get no direct attention. The cameras in Philly only showed it from a great distance; he wore a mask; and since he’s a juvenile, not even his name is going to be released.
As for Matt Diaz; dude you are WELCOME in Philly from this point on! Look for the fans to cheer you when you take the field tonight and tomorrow night.

The influence of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia continues. The Green Man phenomenon started with them, and of course some philly fans embraced it, especially during the recent World Series run. Then it spread to Vancouver where two fans there routinely dress up as the Green Man next to the penalty box and basically taunt the players in it.
Now we have Red Man in Philly. I’m sure Charlie would be proud of his impact on pop culture.

Sadly, the exuberance of the fans in Philadelphia will lead to idiots (I’ll never call them fans) that run out in the field, disrupting the game.
For the 2010 Phillies season, total attendance at Citizen’s Bank Park is nearly 3,500,000 and the park has the lowest percentage of “no shows” in the league. That means the number of people who buy tickets but don’t sell/use them is very low. Out of those millions, you’re going to get a few like this. Regrettable but unavoidable.

The Santa incident is so silly — first of all, it’s 40+ years ago. Second, it wasn’t THE Santa Claus. Philadelphians did not boo the jolly old elf who comes down your chimney to bring presents to children. He was a skinny, drunk 22 year old who was thrust onto the field by Eagles management when the guy who was supposed to play Santa didn’t show up. He was a terrible, terrible Santa, and you would have booed him too.
As for Michael Irvin — He reaped what he sowed. A genuinely awful guy. No one should have a career-ending injury cheered, but it’s not like it was Mother Theresa out there. He was a bastard.

Benjamin, two things. 1) The fan cheered at first when Irvin was injured, as they did NOT know the severity of it. Once they did, they stopped cheering. Also when he gave them thumbs up leaving on the stretcher, they cheered FOR him. 2) I seem to recall that when Chris Chandler was injured that alot of folks cheered as well, because they wanted Vick in the game. Fans cheer injuries everywhere at football games.
Also, the booing Santa thing happened in 1968! And they booed because the team sucked and then gave the fans some plucked out of the stands skinny, ragged Santa. They weren’t booing at Santa, there were booing the team being so bad they couldn’t even do Santa right (and FYI, the guy who played Santa has gone on record saying he did suck and deserved to be booed).
Look, there is plenty of things to knock Philly fans for (Booing when McNabb was drafted, throwing batteries, this idiot running onto the field). But the Irvin and Santa incidents are NOT among them.
Oh, and BTW, you lost. That tap, tap taping sound is us hammering the nails in the Braves coffin.

Mark Redman would sign a baseball before each game he started and inscribe it with “I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME” PHIL 4:13, then give it to a fan…..!!!
At Oklahoma Redman was named 1st Team All-Big Eight, Big Eight Newcomer of the Year, NCAA All-Regional team and was a member of the College World Series All-Tournament team in 1994. In addition, he was selected as a 1st Team All-American in both of his seasons at Oklahoma.
Redman was a member of the 2003 World Series champion Florida Marlins, contributing 14 wins to the team.
Redman was chosen to play for the American League in the 2006 Major League Baseball All-Star Game as the lone representative of the Kansas City Royals. He would finish the season with a team high 11 wins.
Let’s see, Career Won Loss of 68/85, Lifetime ERA 4.85, 747 Strikeouts
Nolan Ryan, #1 in strikeouts played from 1966 to 1993, about 200 strikeouts per year. Redman played for 8 years, 747 strikeouts, or about the same average per year as Whitey Ford and many others.

As previously stated, the reason Santa got pelted was b/c he was drunk. Not to let the facts get in the way of a good story.
Not to condone, but Drew dissed us first. And had it been anyone but Michael Irvin…. Look at the hand that Marlins rookie got when he pulled up lame after pitching a gem in his big-league debut. While we may not treat the villains with kid gloves, we know who the heroes are. WTG, Matt Diaz! Drinks are on us!

Not shocking in the least and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did. Sheesh. The NFL and NBA have no problems with game footage being on YouTube (hockey isn’t a sport, so I can’t answer that one), but baseball seems to like being stuck with their head in the sand.
…
Let me correct that. You can still watch John Smoltz get hit by that foul ball in Fenway on YouTube, thus proving they are making some efforts to appease fans.

At what point does Lord Bobby’s coaching ability get questioned? We’ve committed 50 MORE ERRORS than San Diego (114-64). Of all the other play-off teams, the team closest to us is Colorado (114-85). That means that we have committed at least 29 more errors than every play-off contender.
Talk about a drop off. Are our players THAT FREAKING BAD that there is such a discrepancy in defense (not to mention some of the friendly non-errors that were scored hits by home town official scores)? Or are our guys simply not being coached properly on how to stay focused and play proper defense?
Yet, these guys continue to go out there and make critical error after critical. Brian McCann continues to make bad throws to second. Jason Heyward, has made a number of very lazy errors in right field. You’re talking about 2 of our best players not showing improvement as the season is nearing an end.
I blame all this on Lord Bobby’s player’s manager philosophy. The numbers dont lie. How can a play-off contender have the 3 worst defense in the National League?

Phillies’10………….dude, I’m not blaming our bad defense on the players. I’m blaming it on the lack of coaching that they get from Bobby Cox.
Many so-called Atlanta Braves fans feel that Lord Bobby is a great manager because he’s a player’s manager. I say that being a player’s manager is no different than being a parent who is more concerned with their children liking them…..then they are with raising and teaching their children how to be responsible, productive kids.
Lord Bobby is like a parent who gets called in to a parent-teacher conference because little Johnny is cutting up in class. However when meeting with the teacher, the parent blames the teachers for unfairly getting on little Johnny.
Lord Bobby is no different. He blames everyone else and makes excuses for the failures of his players (not to mention avoiding non-questions about his lack of managing and coaching).

braveschick……..can you really blame Philly for adjusting their rotation for the 3 games with us? These are the games that you WANT TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS and have your best in there. These are the only games that you do not have to scoreboard watch or rely on help from other teams…….because you can take care of business yourself.
Again, I blame Bobby Cox for this. How can you not have Tim Hudson or even (gasp) Derek Lowe (whose pitched well against Philly in his career) pitch in this series? The Phillies are definitely getting their money’s worth with having their best pitchers on the mound.
Think about it, even before Jurrjens got hurt……..we were scheduled to have slightly more than $1 mil in salary (Jurrjens, Hanson and 1/3 of a season salary of Mike Minor, who was in the minors for most of the season) facing a combined $25 mil (Halladay $15.75, Oswalt’s approximate $2.5 mil, which is Philly’s prorated potion, including the part Houston agreed to pay when the trade was made, and Hamels’ $6.5 mil) in starting pitching.
Meanwhile we left $24 mil (Lowe $15 mil, Hudson $9 mil) worth on the sidelines, so they could open the weekend series against the Nationals.
Pathetic.

Phillies’10……I have love for the fact that Irvin helped us win 3 of our 5 Super Bowls.
By the way, I grew up in Arkansas. I was 10 years old back in 1982 when I started getting into sports. Remember, back in those days, cable tv didnt show a lot of sports. The only baseball I was able to see was the NBC Game of the Week..as well as the Braves on TBS.
As far as football is concerned, since there are no pro teams in Arkansas, CBS would show Dallas games on Sunday’s in our market. That’s how I became a fan of the Braves and Cowboys.
The ironic thing is that in the last part of the 80’s, I was a suffering Cowboys and Braves fan. However, in 1991, both teams started to turn it around. In 1995, both the Braves and Cowboys won Championships.

The reason why we are winning is because of our starting pitching and strong bullpen…..not because of anything Bobby Cox has done. In fact, I feel that he’s done a number of things to hold our offense and defense back.

ss………actually, it would have been better if Bobby Cox had called it a career after last year (or better yet after we went out with a whimper after the 2005 play-offs).
I just hope that our next manager is someone who will be more concerned with winning, then having his players like him.
Players may not like Bobby Valentine as a manager……however in all the years he managed the Mets….NOT ONCE did he ever have a chance to manage a team that was better than the Braves. So Mark Bradley’s “what has Valentine every won” comeback is pretty invalid and meaningless.
With that said, he did manage to take a Wild Card team to the 2000 World Series. I believe that if Valentine had managed the Braves…..we’d have more than 1 World Series to show for those 14 division titles.
A better question would be this: Would Bobby Cox have won any World Series managing the Mets teams that Valentine had to manage? Also, how do you think the New York press would have handled Lord Bobby’s player’s manager philosophy?
ss

5:41 pm
christopher chance,
You asked some good questions.
1. Bobby Valentine is nuts, but the only thing i had a problem with him was he got tossed from a game the year of the subway series and came back dressed up in a team shirt and a stache and glasses. You get thrown out, just dont come back.
He is a compeitive and firery manager, which some teams need, and some dont. The mets teams he had during their run when they were actually competitive. (unlike now) Their starting pitching could hange with anyone at that time, but their lineup from what i reacall didnt have that real scary hitter like the phillies lineup does now.
2. The NY press would basically rip him apart. They did it to the yankees last year, the jets during camp and their week 1 loss. The papers up there are honest, but sometimes its a little too extreme. However, the headlines they came up with for news stories about their teams do have funnny titles to them.

That is why I was totally not surprised when the Phillies ran the Braves down this year. Since 2007, they’ve had a history of playing GREAT baseball the last part of the season….with basically the same core of players (as well as a couple of added parts like Halladay and Oswalt).
I also said weeks ago that this Braves team had no history of seriously competing for a division title since 2005. We had to prove that we could hold off the Phillies……..which ultimately we didnt. We went from being up 7 games to currently down 4 (with the prospect of it being 6 by late tomorrow night).

This Braves team has no history of seriously competing for a division title since 2005. We had to prove that we could hold off the Phillies……..which ultimately we didnt. We went from being up 7 games to currently down 4.
Eleven game swing in less than 2 months speaks volumes.

However, realistically, not just “anything” can happen. Logic and reality, as well as previous history…..should be factors when one makes “anything can happen” statements.

Another example of a non-error by the Braves defense, was the non catch by Prado on that foul pop-up by Ibanez there. Extending opponents at-bats pushes up the pitch count……as well as potentially giving the other team extra outs.

Who are teaches these guys the fundamentals of the game? Mike Minor does not look back the runner at second on three straight pitches.,..allowing Valdez to just steal third standing up.
Meanwhile, Brian McCann makes another bad throw trying to pick the runner off first……..only to be saved by a great scoop by Derek Lee (do any of you Troy Glaus “jock sniffers” really think that Glaus could have scooped up that bad throw by McCann?).
We’re just lucky that Minor got out of the inning without any damage being done. However, against a team like the Phillies, how much longer can we rely on luck to bail us out?

What was Minor thinking there? Instead of bunting, he swings away and hits into a double play?
I’m confused……what’s the object of this game? To score runs? Or to see how many fundamental errors we can make tonight?
I am totally baffled as to how many of you on here can continue to defend Bobby Cox and say that he’s a great manager. Time after time after time………our team has shown that we’re fundamentally challenged.
The reason why we’re in contention is because of our pitching. Good pitching can pitch around mistakes……….sometimes.
However, I wouldnt give Lord Bobby credit for our good pitching.

Yet, Bobby Cox is a “great manager”, lol.
I’m curious, why didnt Charlie Manuel let Kyle Kendrick and Joe Blanton pitch in this series? Because he wanted to use his HORSES to put the nail in the coffin when it comes to winning the division.
WTF was Lord Bobby thinking by not setting the rotation up so Hudson and Lowe could pitch in this series?

Frank Wren (the real Frank Wren)………if you’re reading this (or if someone who knows you is reading this)……..PLEASE hire a manager next season who care more about WINNING, then about trying to keep the players liking him.
We need a manager who will teach our guys to play some defense. We need a manager who will not be worried about “offending” our players when it’s obvious that they either need to be benched OR the rotation needs to be adjusted for a big series.
We need to learn how to play fundamental baseball……..as well as how to bunt and run ourselves out of innings.
PLEASE Frank Wren….hire a real manager…….not a cheerleader.

Mr. Bradley………One of the reasons why I’m so critical, especially of Bobby Cox, is because despite our lack of a true power hitter (Lee hasnt hit the homers in bunches so far that we’ve expected)……with proper coaching, this team could be a very dangerous team in the play-offs.
However, we never hit and run…cant bunt…cant field……..all signs of poor coaching. We have the pitching to keep games close in the play-offs. However, we are being killed in the other parts of the game right now.
I so much want to see the Braves win……..and see the potential for us to win games against good teams. However, we simply cannot afford to make avoidable mistakes.

McCann hits great for a catcher. However he cant run, nor throw to save his life………nor can he resist using that lazy back handed stab attempt when it comes to blocking wild pitches.
Again, why doesnt any of our coaches sit him down and teach him how to play some freaking baseball? One would think that a 4 time All-Star would have the mental capacity to learn how to play fundamental baseball.

Why Irvin is a scumbag:
1996 arrest
In March 1996, Irvin was arrested on charges of cocaine possession at a hotel party celebrating his 30th birthday. After numerous court appearances amid a national media circus, which featured Irvin showing up to court in a full-length mink coat, he pled no contest to the charges and was sentenced to community service, ordered to pay a $10,000 fine, and put on 4-years probation. When drug-tested for illicit drugs, he tested negative. But the NFL suspended Irvin for the first five games of the 1996 season.
In Irvin’s 1996 absence, the Cowboys struggled out of the gate and never recovered. Upon his return from suspension, Irvin tallied 962 receiving yards in only 11 games.
False sexual assault allegation
Irvin sustained further damage to his reputation in 1996 when controversy reared its head again as the Cowboys prepared to play the Carolina Panthers for their NFC Divisional Playoff game. Media reports stated that Irvin and teammate Erik Williams had sexually assaulted a Dallas woman, Nina Shahravan, and, with a gun to her head, videotaped the interaction.
Despite Williams’ and Irvin’s denials of the allegations, the story overshadowed the game, which the Cowboys lost. The accuser was later proven to have fabricated the entire incident. She recanted her story, pled guilty to perjury and filing a false police report and was sentenced to 90 days in prison and a fine.
In the first quarter of the playoff game with Carolina, with Shahravan’s allegations under active investigation by Dallas police, Irvin suffered a broken collarbone, ending his 1996 season.
1998 alleged assault
In 1998 Irvin was alleged to be involved in a bizarre incident during training camp when he allegedly inflicted a two-inch cut in the neck of Dallas guard Everett McIver while some team members were getting haircuts.[8] Whether it was battery or accidental McIver did not press charges, and rumors swirled that Irvin brokered a six-figure settlement with McIver to drop the matter. Accounts of this incident after the alleged settlement became difficult to find or research in the local Dallas press.[9][10]
Arrests since retirement
A year following his retirement from the NFL, Irvin again was arrested on drug possession charges.[11] In this case, Irvin was in a Dallas apartment with an unrelated woman. Neither answered the door when police drug task force agents arrived with a search warrant. Police entered the apartment forcibly, finding drugs. Irvin and the female were placed under arrest, though charges against Irvin were later dropped.
The promises of a new lifestyle in broadcasting appeared to be short-lived, with Irvin again arrested. In this instance Irvin was pulled over in Plano, Texas, for speeding on November 25, 2005. Irvin was arrested on an outstanding warrant on an unpaid speeding ticket in Irving, Texas, but was also cited for misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after police searched his car and found the crack pipe, and plastic bags with marijuana residue.[12] Irvin was arrested for a Class C misdemeanor. He was later released on bond, with ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz saying only that: “We are reviewing the facts of the situation and have no comment at this time.”
Two days after his arrest, Irvin appeared on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown”, as scheduled, on November 27, 2005. In his on-the-air comments that evening, he stated that he had taken the drug paraphernalia away from a longtime friend who was battling a drug addiction. Irvin told the Associated Press he was trying to help someone close to him get off drugs and cares more about that than his chances of being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The next day Irvin said the pipe was in fact his brother’s and he (Irvin) was going to throw it out but had forgotten to do so.
On December 1, 2005, however, ESPN suspended Irvin for the Sunday and Monday night Countdown shows on December 4 and December 5, 2005.[13] He returned to both shows with no mention or consequence of the past incident.
Another sexual assault allegation
On July 4, 2007 Irvin was accused of sexual assault while he was at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Ft. Lauderdale. Charges were never filed, but a civil suit was filed against him in 2010.[14]
Victim of alleged carjacking attempt
Irvin claims that he was a victim of a possible carjacking attempt while stopped at a light in Dallas on January 12, 2009. He filed a police report claiming that two men flashed a gun at him, but eventually drove away after commenting that they were Cowboys fans.[15] Dallas police suspended their investigation two weeks later, stating that Irvin had not cooperated in the investigation and that without more information from him, they could not proceed.[16]

Mr. Bradley…..has anyone ever considered why they Braves players keep making sillly and dumb errors, both in the field and on the bases (as well as not bunting)?
I feel that if players were subject to public criticism (like they are in most “real” sports towns with a “free” press that is “free” to hold the players and management accountable)…..then maybe they will feel “pressure” to do their jobs properly.
Instead, Bobby Cox shields his players from criticism. With no fear of criticism or being held accountable…..there is little incentive to correct one’s mistakes or change.

LOL! McCann just missed that strike. Then he goes to the mound to make it look like he was “crossed up” on that pitch.
However, on the replay, he doesnt flinch like a catcher normally does when he’s crossed up. He just closed his glove too early and let a perfect strike go to for a passed ball.
Meanwhile, Kimbrel gets out of the inning with no damage.
Also, Congrats to Freddie Freeman for hitting a monster home run off Halladay for his first career homer.
With 2 innings left, it’s time we show some of that magic comeback heroics that we’ve come to rely on.

ss………..if Werth was willing to play center field (something he has done with the Phillies on occassion)….I would love to see the Braves make a go at trying to sign him.
He has speed (can steal bases as well as run balls down in the outfield) hits with power from the right side of the plate……..and has a strong arm (which is sorely needed in center).
Sure, it will take some series cash to sign him. However he would be great in our line-up.

Cox knows that we’re hitting into double plays…..why not start a runner? Heyward is the perfect guy to hit and run with. Even if the hitter misses, he’s still fast enough to steal a base.
Then again, maybe Lord Bobby knows that since he hasnt bothered teaching these guys how to run the bases…..there is no sense in having them hit and run.

Brian McCann got dressed and had left for the hotel room before the locker room was open to reporters?
Look, like it or not, he’s basically our team leader. When you mess up, you face the music. Given the softball type questions that the Atlanta media usually ask Braves players and coaches………McCann must have really been in a mood to run if he didnt want to deal with the softball Atlanta media, lol.
That’s why I have a lot of respect for Luis Castillo of the Mets. Last year, when he dropped that game ending pop-up against the Yankees…he stood by his locker and LIKE A MAN, answered every question from the relentless New York media. Afterward, the press was actually sympathetic towards Castillo because he took their barrage of questions LIKE A MAN. He didnt run away like McCann did.
Regardless, our team is sorely lacking leadership. I’m sick and tired of the “rah, rah, let’s stay a happy clubhouse” CRAP that I’ve been hearing all year. It’s put up or shut up time. We need leaders to step up and get on these MOFOS and tell them to FOCUS THE FCUK UP AND START PLAYING SOME FUNDAMENTAL BASEBALL!
We gave away 2 winnable games. Bad defense, bad base running, lack of clutch hitting, lack of execution (not bunting or hit and running).
Tomorrow’s game will decide if we have any chance at all of winning the division. If we win, we’ll be 4 out (meaning that we only have to make up one game in the next six games before the final 3 in Atlanta against Philly). However if we lose, then we’ll have to make up 3 games (meaning that we’ll have to go 6-0 AND hope that Philly goes, at best, 3-3 in their next 6 games) for the 3 games in Atlanta to mean anything as far as the division is concerned.
Backs up against the wall. Are we going to play like like we want a shot at the division tomorrow? Or are we just going to lay down tomorrow and regroup against the Nationals and Marlins and shoot for the Wild Card?

I didn’t say Redman was Cy Young, my point being that Redman was a major league pitcher and maybe wasn’t the best but far from the worst. He has reason to be satisfied with his career and share his story with his grandchildren. People who slam others may not have that great of a story to tell.
