The new Philly hero: Matt Diaz, foiler of Red Man (with video)

Philadelphia — Patrons at an Eagles game  infamously pelted Santa Claus with snowballs, but Philly fans weren’t booing Matt Diaz. On the contrary, the Braves’ outfielder became a local hero for his sidling takedown of an individual who has come already to be known as Red Man. (Not to be confused with Mark Redman, former lousy Braves’ pitcher.)

Seventh inning, Monday night, Jayson Werth batting: Red Man, clad in red spandex head-to-toe, capers from the left-field stands and heads across the outfield. Watching from the press box, you could see that Diaz, stationed in left, thought about impeding Red Man’s progress but decided against it.

Then, when security forces arrived and forced Red Man back left but started slipping in their pursuit, Diaz took matters unto his own hip.

He blindsided Red Man. Stuck out his right leg and Red Man went flying. “He got right up, but then the security guy crushed him,” Diaz said afterward.

Diaz was the postgame focal point in the Braves’ clubhouse because an intruding fan here had been tasered by a security man earlier this season. “I saw the cop coming with the Taser,” Diaz said. “I figured the guy would rather have me trip him than get tased.”

Wait a second, a Philly writer asked: Did he really see someone with a Taser? (I told you: They take this seriously up here.) “No,” Diaz said. “I was kidding.”

Diaz’s stated motivation: He remembered a Braves’ security guard getting hurt in a similar chase a while back. “I wanted to spear [Red Man] so bad, but I didn’t want to get hurt and I didn’t want to hurt him. I just stuck out my foot and he hit it.”

I asked if Red Man had, in their moment of close proximity, revealed his secret identity. “No,” Diaz said. “I’m sure the judge will find it.”

Red Man’s reaction to being tripped? He was shocked, Diaz said, adding that he could see the mystery man’s wide eyes through the costume.

And the Philly fans? They cheered Diaz, who tipped his cap. And who told reporters afterward: “They were very complimentary. I heard everything from, ‘I just put you on YouTube‘ to a girl with an ‘Utley marry me’ sign say, ‘I’ll marry you, too.’ ”

Speaking of YouTube … here you go.

Mark Bradley…………dude, I’m not sure what game you’re watching….but if Prado fields that ball, all he has to do is take one step to step on the 3rd base bag…and throw to first. It was a tailor made double play.

Here’s a chilling stat: In 13 innings of play so far this series………the Braves have grounded into 4 double plays, made 3 errors………while only scoring 1 run.

Mr. Bradley………One of the reasons why I’m so critical, especially of Bobby Cox, is because despite our lack of a true power hitter (Lee hasnt hit the homers in bunches so far that we’ve expected)……with proper coaching, this team could be a very dangerous team in the play-offs.

However, we never hit and run…cant bunt…cant field……..all signs of poor coaching. We have the pitching to keep games close in the play-offs. However, we are being killed in the other parts of the game right now.

I so much want to see the Braves win……..and see the potential for us to win games against good teams. However, we simply cannot afford to make avoidable mistakes.

Even though Hinske ended up not hitting into a double play…with the way our offense has been going…..I’d been happy with a double play…as long as the run scored.

3-1 Phillies……at least Heyward is now the tying run.

Joe Simpson beat me to the punch. That is two nights in a row that McCann JUST MISSED hitting it out.

This is a critical inning. Runners on 2nd and 3rd and 0 outs.

Unbelieveable. What was McCann thinking? He is as slow as molasses.

Man, lol. Talk about running ourselves out of an inning.

…I just dont understand. Whose teaching these guys to run the bases? Whose teaching these guys to play defense?

McCann hits great for a catcher. However he cant run, nor throw to save his life………nor can he resist using that lazy back handed stab attempt when it comes to blocking wild pitches.

Again, why doesnt any of our coaches sit him down and teach him how to play some freaking baseball? One would think that a 4 time All-Star would have the mental capacity to learn how to play fundamental baseball.

Why Irvin is a scumbag:

1996 arrest

In March 1996, Irvin was arrested on charges of cocaine possession at a hotel party celebrating his 30th birthday. After numerous court appearances amid a national media circus, which featured Irvin showing up to court in a full-length mink coat, he pled no contest to the charges and was sentenced to community service, ordered to pay a $10,000 fine, and put on 4-years probation. When drug-tested for illicit drugs, he tested negative. But the NFL suspended Irvin for the first five games of the 1996 season.

In Irvin’s 1996 absence, the Cowboys struggled out of the gate and never recovered. Upon his return from suspension, Irvin tallied 962 receiving yards in only 11 games.

False sexual assault allegation

Irvin sustained further damage to his reputation in 1996 when controversy reared its head again as the Cowboys prepared to play the Carolina Panthers for their NFC Divisional Playoff game. Media reports stated that Irvin and teammate Erik Williams had sexually assaulted a Dallas woman, Nina Shahravan, and, with a gun to her head, videotaped the interaction.

Despite Williams’ and Irvin’s denials of the allegations, the story overshadowed the game, which the Cowboys lost. The accuser was later proven to have fabricated the entire incident. She recanted her story, pled guilty to perjury and filing a false police report and was sentenced to 90 days in prison and a fine.

In the first quarter of the playoff game with Carolina, with Shahravan’s allegations under active investigation by Dallas police, Irvin suffered a broken collarbone, ending his 1996 season.

1998 alleged assault

In 1998 Irvin was alleged to be involved in a bizarre incident during training camp when he allegedly inflicted a two-inch cut in the neck of Dallas guard Everett McIver while some team members were getting haircuts.[8] Whether it was battery or accidental McIver did not press charges, and rumors swirled that Irvin brokered a six-figure settlement with McIver to drop the matter. Accounts of this incident after the alleged settlement became difficult to find or research in the local Dallas press.[9][10]

Arrests since retirement

A year following his retirement from the NFL, Irvin again was arrested on drug possession charges.[11] In this case, Irvin was in a Dallas apartment with an unrelated woman. Neither answered the door when police drug task force agents arrived with a search warrant. Police entered the apartment forcibly, finding drugs. Irvin and the female were placed under arrest, though charges against Irvin were later dropped.

The promises of a new lifestyle in broadcasting appeared to be short-lived, with Irvin again arrested. In this instance Irvin was pulled over in Plano, Texas, for speeding on November 25, 2005. Irvin was arrested on an outstanding warrant on an unpaid speeding ticket in Irving, Texas, but was also cited for misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after police searched his car and found the crack pipe, and plastic bags with marijuana residue.[12] Irvin was arrested for a Class C misdemeanor. He was later released on bond, with ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz saying only that: “We are reviewing the facts of the situation and have no comment at this time.”

Two days after his arrest, Irvin appeared on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown”, as scheduled, on November 27, 2005. In his on-the-air comments that evening, he stated that he had taken the drug paraphernalia away from a longtime friend who was battling a drug addiction. Irvin told the Associated Press he was trying to help someone close to him get off drugs and cares more about that than his chances of being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The next day Irvin said the pipe was in fact his brother’s and he (Irvin) was going to throw it out but had forgotten to do so.

On December 1, 2005, however, ESPN suspended Irvin for the Sunday and Monday night Countdown shows on December 4 and December 5, 2005.[13] He returned to both shows with no mention or consequence of the past incident.

Another sexual assault allegation

On July 4, 2007 Irvin was accused of sexual assault while he was at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Ft. Lauderdale. Charges were never filed, but a civil suit was filed against him in 2010.[14]

Victim of alleged carjacking attempt

Irvin claims that he was a victim of a possible carjacking attempt while stopped at a light in Dallas on January 12, 2009. He filed a police report claiming that two men flashed a gun at him, but eventually drove away after commenting that they were Cowboys fans.[15] Dallas police suspended their investigation two weeks later, stating that Irvin had not cooperated in the investigation and that without more information from him, they could not proceed.[16]

Mr. Bradley…..has anyone ever considered why they Braves players keep making sillly and dumb errors, both in the field and on the bases (as well as not bunting)?

I feel that if players were subject to public criticism (like they are in most “real” sports towns with a “free” press that is “free” to hold the players and management accountable)…..then maybe they will feel “pressure” to do their jobs properly.

Instead, Bobby Cox shields his players from criticism. With no fear of criticism or being held accountable…..there is little incentive to correct one’s mistakes or change.

It just shows that even a blind squirrel gets an acorn every now and then.

Just like that, back to a 3 run deficit.

LOL! McCann just missed that strike. Then he goes to the mound to make it look like he was “crossed up” on that pitch.

However, on the replay, he doesnt flinch like a catcher normally does when he’s crossed up. He just closed his glove too early and let a perfect strike go to for a passed ball.

Meanwhile, Kimbrel gets out of the inning with no damage.

Also, Congrats to Freddie Freeman for hitting a monster home run off Halladay for his first career homer.

With 2 innings left, it’s time we show some of that magic comeback heroics that we’ve come to rely on.

ss………..if Werth was willing to play center field (something he has done with the Phillies on occassion)….I would love to see the Braves make a go at trying to sign him.

He has speed (can steal bases as well as run balls down in the outfield) hits with power from the right side of the plate……..and has a strong arm (which is sorely needed in center).

Sure, it will take some series cash to sign him. However he would be great in our line-up.

Cox knows that we’re hitting into double plays…..why not start a runner? Heyward is the perfect guy to hit and run with. Even if the hitter misses, he’s still fast enough to steal a base.

Then again, maybe Lord Bobby knows that since he hasnt bothered teaching these guys how to run the bases…..there is no sense in having them hit and run.

Brian McCann got dressed and had left for the hotel room before the locker room was open to reporters?

Look, like it or not, he’s basically our team leader. When you mess up, you face the music. Given the softball type questions that the Atlanta media usually ask Braves players and coaches………McCann must have really been in a mood to run if he didnt want to deal with the softball Atlanta media, lol.

That’s why I have a lot of respect for Luis Castillo of the Mets. Last year, when he dropped that game ending pop-up against the Yankees…he stood by his locker and LIKE A MAN, answered every question from the relentless New York media. Afterward, the press was actually sympathetic towards Castillo because he took their barrage of questions LIKE A MAN. He didnt run away like McCann did.

Regardless, our team is sorely lacking leadership. I’m sick and tired of the “rah, rah, let’s stay a happy clubhouse” CRAP that I’ve been hearing all year. It’s put up or shut up time. We need leaders to step up and get on these MOFOS and tell them to FOCUS THE FCUK UP AND START PLAYING SOME FUNDAMENTAL BASEBALL!

We gave away 2 winnable games. Bad defense, bad base running, lack of clutch hitting, lack of execution (not bunting or hit and running).

Tomorrow’s game will decide if we have any chance at all of winning the division. If we win, we’ll be 4 out (meaning that we only have to make up one game in the next six games before the final 3 in Atlanta against Philly). However if we lose, then we’ll have to make up 3 games (meaning that we’ll have to go 6-0 AND hope that Philly goes, at best, 3-3 in their next 6 games) for the 3 games in Atlanta to mean anything as far as the division is concerned.

Backs up against the wall. Are we going to play like like we want a shot at the division tomorrow? Or are we just going to lay down tomorrow and regroup against the Nationals and Marlins and shoot for the Wild Card?

I didn’t say Redman was Cy Young, my point being that Redman was a major league pitcher and maybe wasn’t the best but far from the worst. He has reason to be satisfied with his career and share his story with his grandchildren. People who slam others may not have that great of a story to tell.
